YOUR NEW VILLA PARK ARGUS | ALSO SERVING OAKBROOK TERRACE U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin takes a ride Aug. 7 on the new Villa Park fire engine.

editorial@mysuburbanlife.com VILLA PARK t’s been a long time coming, and now the Villa Park Fire Department’s new fire engine is ready for duty. The engine is scheduled to begin service Aug. 14 after arriving at the department in early July. Fire Chief Ron Rakosnik said it was “long overdue,” and after undergoing training on the new engine during the past month, the firemen are very excited to put it into use. “This is tremendous for our village; it was very much needed,” he said. “The guys deserve this, and our residents deserve this, too. As a chief, you fight to make your guys safe, so we try to get them the best equipment.” The new engine was paid for largely with a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant. The village was awarded the $432,000 grant in July 2014. Rakosnik said the cost of the engine was $522,000, so the village contributed about $90,000. The new engine replaced the village’s 26-year-old engine, which was donated to the University of Illinois’ fire academy for training purposes. “The old one didn’t have air bags or very many safety features, so this new one makes our firefighters safe and it’s more reliable,” Rakosnik said.

“Serving our communities to make them better places to live.”

Rakosnik said the new engine has airbags, LED lighting, air conditioning, nicer seating, more compartments and a different pumping mechanism, and it carries paramedic equipment. “It’s also 3 feet longer and 1 foot wider. It has better brakes, better turning radius and is just a much safer piece of equipment,” he said. “It also helps our guys get to their calls quicker, and they know it’s a more reliable vehicle.” Village President Deb Bullwinkel said U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, and U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth, D-Illinois, were instrumental in helping Villa Park get the grant. Durbin was in Villa Park on Aug. 7 to see firsthand what the grant was

used for. He even went for a ride on the engine. “It was really nice he stopped by, and he was very impressed with the engine,” Bullwinkel said. “Sen. Durbin is a big supporter of first responders, and it’s a real pleasure when folks who facilitated the grant are able to talk to the chief and staff and see the impact of the grant. They see the end results and how the money was spent.” Bullwinkel also worked on the grant along with the fire department and was “over the moon” when she found out Villa Park would receive the funds, she said. “Federal grant funds are hard to come by, and this grant covered the lion’s share of the costs and really helped a lot,” Bullwinkel said. “It’s nice to know Villa Park is on the radar. We deserve new equipment just as much as other municipalities.”

This isn’t the first time the fire department applied for the FEMA grant. It applied in 2012 and didn’t get it. Rakosnik said they reworked the wording in the application and reapplied at the end of 2013. “We had a lot of equipment that needed to be replaced,” he said. “Now we’re on a schedule to replace our vehicles. We’re replacing our ambulances every nine years and our fire engines every 21 years.” Bullwinkel said Villa Park residents are excited about the new engine. It arrived just in time for the village’s Fourth of July Parade, and the fire department was able to show it off. “It’s been fun talking with the residents and hearing how proud they are. Our fire department has great community support,” she said. “It was fun to introduce the engine at the parade. It was highly anticipated.”

Patty Chirumbolo Lombard resident and “Hollywood Game Night” contestant

LOMBARD – Patty Chirumbolo’s family and closest friends gathered in her basement Aug. 11 to watch her TV debut as a contestant on NBC’s “Hollywood Game Night.” Leading up to the episode’s premiere, her friends and family had no idea she was on the winning team and earned a $25,000 cash prize, said Chirumbolo, a teacher in Elmhurst and Lombard resident. The game centers on five

choice had to name 10 celebrities correctly off a list in less than 90 seconds. Chirumbolo said she chose Long as a partner because he was a fast talker and could spit out more clues, which is crucial to winning that game. “I got all 10 correct under 90 seconds with 15 seconds to spare,” she said. Chirumbolo said she has yet to decide what to do with the prize money. “Winning was great, but this was such an exciting experience,” she said.

WATCH OUT FOR FALLS Fall-related deaths have risen sharply among those in the 65+ age group over the past decade. Aside from muscular and nerve disorders that adversely affect balance and increase the risk of falls, impaired vision can also throw off a person’s balance. Eye disorders can blur or distort sight or even create gaps in a person’s field of vision. Glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy are two especially common culprits behind balance-related falls and injuries. In its early stages, glaucoma reduces side (peripheral) vision and, if left untreated, can lead to increasing blindness. Diabetic retinopathy causes blurred central vision and “floaters” that leave holes in the field of vision. Annual eye exams can help preserve both vision and better balance. Preserving your vision is an important part of protecting your quality of life. People with a family history of diabetes, high blood pressure, or glaucoma are more at risk of developing eyesight problems than those without these genetic traits. To schedule an eye exam, please call SKOWRON EYE CARE. We provide treatment for eye diseases and eye injuries as well offering custom contact lens fittings and a large selection of frames at competitive prices. To schedule an exam, please call us today. At Skowron Eye Care, our mission is your vision. P.S.Visual acuity less than 20/60, cataracts, decreasing depth perception, and reduced sensitivity to contrast (which can all be detected in a standard eye exam) contribute to falls.

School District 45 will open its doors to more than 3,400 students Aug. 24. For all of us here, this is the most exciting time of year. Spending time this summer with staff, I am secretly aware of the exciting plans we have for our students. Throughout the summer, teachers have been creatively working to build the curriculum not only to engage and challenge, but also to spark the love of learning in every child. The students might even have a little fun. This school year, more than any other, we will be focusing on collaboration to ensure learning for all. Interestingly, society has been taught to believe in one way to teach. Many of us remember the educational movies that have inspired us throughout the years: “Dead Poets Society,” Robin Williams; “Dangerous Minds,” Michelle Pfeiffer; “Mr. Holland’s Opus,” Richard Dreyfuss; “Freedom Writers,” Hilary Swank; and “Stand and Deliver,” Edward James Olmos. These movies certainly inspire teaching, but there’s a problem. In each movie, the teachers did it alone. They were the sole heroes. Three of the five movies were based on true stories. In “Stand and Deliver,” Jaime Escalante worked until he had a heart attack. In “Freedom Writers,” Erin Gruwell quit teaching after four years, and LouAnne Johnson from “Dangerous Minds” taught full time for only one year. These teachers are the lone rangers in education, but the truth is, in real life, working alone just isn’t sustainable. School District 45 has embarked on the best approach to teaching in the 21st century by creating a learning

COMMUNITY VOICE Anthony J. Palmisano community. Current research regarding effective schooling is emphatic about developing a collaborative culture where teachers share ideas, hold each other accountable, develop units and plans together, and commit to collective responsibility for every child’s success. Researchers and experts have said: “It is time to end the practice of solo teaching in isolated classrooms.” (Fulton, Yoon, & Lee, 2005) “Quality teaching is not an individual accomplishment, it is the result of a collaborative culture that empowers teachers to team up to improve student learning beyond what anyone of them can achieve alone.” (Carroll, 2009, p. 13) In fact, not only are we working together internally, we also are working closely with our neighbors in Addison Elementary School District 4, Salt Creek School District 48 and DuPage High School District 88 to prepare students for post-secondary success. Just like other professions where teams of professionals, especially in the medical field, work together, this year School District 45 will design a new Mission and Vision as a way to unite us in our endeavor to work together. In the coming months, look for more information on how to participate in developing School District 45’s vision for the future.

Anthony J. Palmisano is the superintendent of School District 45, DuPage County.
