Community High School District 94 will move forward with plans to renovate its building in 2015.

Check out stories to follow in new year SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA WEST CHICAGO – Before even crossing off a day on the new 2015 calendar, there are already plenty of stories brewing in West Chicago. Here’s a look at the headlines to watch for in the new year:

1. School upgrades What we know: The local high school is getting a facelift. Community High School District 94 approved moving forward with Phase 2 of its long-range facility plan, which includes major renovations to the building. Administrative offices will

2. Tech talk What we know: The District

94 board voted to implement a 1:1 Chromebook program. All 2,200 students in the district will get a personal computer. The district went through a pilot program two years ago and decided it wanted to implement the new technology in the classroom. It opted to move forward with the plan because of how much technology has saturated society and how prevalent it is in everyday life. What’s next: The program will be implemented in fall of the 2015-16 school year.

3. Clean living What we know: City officials asked – again – for the federal government to release funds to support the cleanup of sites contaminated by thorium at the old Kerr-McGee factory. The funds would come from the Title X program through the Department of Energy.

In January 2009, Tronox – formerly Kerr-McGee – filed for bankruptcy and ceased cleaning the site. No significant progress was made in the years since. U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Illinois, and U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, have both visited the site and expressed a desire to get the funds released. What’s next: The waiting is the hardest part. There’s no guarantee anything will happen in the coming year, but it’s still on the city’s radar.

‘There is one less family that is homeless’ This year was an exciting year for DuPagePads, as 392 people obtained permanent housing, 145,501 meals were served, 44,284 nights of shelter were provided and 1,360 individuals were assisted, including 241 children in 144 families. One of these families was Angel’s, and she shares her journey below. “With nowhere to go, my children and I walked to COMMUNITY DuPagePads. With a lump in VOICE my throat, tears in my eyes Carol and my pride in my purse, I Simler told them, ‘I need help.’” A myriad of challenges led Angel to this point. She had been through an abusive marriage, suffered health complications, lost her $42,000-a-year job and no longer had a place to call home for her and her children. Angel describes her life at that time as being, “downright depressing!” Angel said the staff at DuPagePads offered her a helping hand. “They were there to root for me – that type of cheering section helps you face your giants.” In February 2012, Angel moved into her own apartment. “My case manager greeted us at the door and said, ‘welcome home.’” Tears welled in Angel’s eyes as she looked around her furnished apartment. “There were bags and bags. They had taken care of every detail, from light bulbs to dishes and everything in between.” Angel and her children had been doing well until this summer when Angel faced immense pain, which called for an emergency room visit and immediate surgery. Her son, who had accompanied her in the ambulance, was told by the doctor he could not stay overnight. “I was hysterical and with no relatives to call, I contacted my DuPagePads case manager.” Angel’s case manager showed up to the hospital at 4:30 a.m. to pick up her son. Following the surgery, she brought Angel’s children back to visit her and assured them their mother was going to be OK. Angel said DuPagePads has “been my rock through this trying time.” “From a ride to the grocery store to providing cleaning supplies, DuPagePads does whatever they can to help. Because of DuPagePads, my children can stay at their school in Naperville; there is one less family that is homeless, one less child on the streets. To my DuPagePads family, words cannot express the gratitude and admiration I have for you! Thank you for never letting go!” Interested in assisting families and individuals like Angel? Visit our website, www.dupagepads.org/donate, to see how your donation can make more success stories possible. We look forward to a new year as we work together to end homelessness in DuPage County.

I’m a 62-year-old black man, and I hate that all this race stuff, black and white, is going on. I will never understand how all this got started. Back in the day, black people had to go in the back door or sit in the back of the bus, and white people could make them get up so they could sit down. Why did all this happen? Why couldn’t we have love from the beginning and stop all this hate? I don’t understand how the color of your skin [matters]. God made us all, we are all God’s children and I can’t understand all this hate.

Bob Fisher Illinois Ornithological Society president

Chapman said the annual counts average around 100 birders apiece, and have been growing in recent years. “Why do people bird?” said Bob Fisher, member of the DuPage Birding Club and president of the Illinois Ornithological Society. “Why do they go out on a cold gray day in [December]? Part of it is the thrill of the chase.” Fisher said many enjoy being a part of a larger effort of cataloging, but there is a definite undercurrent of competition and adventure to the effort. “In their secret heart of hearts every Christmas Bird Count birder longs to see some rarity on the Christmas Count bon website. By working with “This is ... well-defined to say ‘I saw it.’” he said. “And coordinators like Chapman, counting in the same spot they don’t complete the senthe Society helps compile the year to year, so we can track tence with ‘and you didn’t.’ data for both local posterity the trends of certain species,” They want a whole bunch of other people to see it.” and a bit of analysis. West Chicago Neighborhood Food Pantry site coordinator Ken Walker (center) receives a $500 check and food donations Dec. 22 from West Chicago Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 85 Vice President Anthony Cargola (left) and Secretary Robbi Peterson. Lodge 85 delivered 36 hams, six cases of canned vegetables and other nonperishables to the pantry. The lodge also collected 150 warm clothing items for its inaugural Operation Warm and Fuzzy drive, which will be distributed to community members in need this winter.

Parker E. Wiggin, Jr., age 88, of Glen Ellyn, IL passed away Sunday, December 21, 2014. Loving Father of Parker, Dana and the proud Grandfather to Maxwell, Marley, Kali and Clare. He was preceded in death by his wife, Meryl (Chick) Wiggin in 2007. A casual memorial service will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal located at 393 N Main Street in Glen Ellyn on January 3, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Please in Lieu of flowers donations can be made to St Mark's Episcopal Church in Glen Ellyn. Parker's family wishes to express their gratitude to Winchester Manor in Libertyville, IL, its Physicians, Nurses and Staff for their outstanding care and compassion during Parker's illness.

At the end of the counts, the Birding Club hosts an annual dinner, tallying the final counts for all species across both events while they regale one another with bird count stories and bond over a shared love of nature. As to why so many show for winter bird counts that are, at best, bright and chilly and, at worst, covered in freezing snow? “Some people would call it crazy, but I think in the winter time ... people don’t go out and bird as much, and it’s a chance to get together and count all day, then get together and have pizza and drinks and become part of the season,” Chapman said. “During the holidays you get together with your family and friends, and for me that’s how ingrained this is every year.”

Birders from around the county and beyond migrated into the forests, preserves, lakes and streets of DuPage County for the annual Christmas Bird Count in mid-December. Each year, the National Audubon Society sponsors counts across the country. The two events the DuPage Birding Club held centered around the Morton Arboretum in Lisle on Dec. 14 and the Fermilab in Warrenville on Dec. 20. Each group covers a 7.5mile radius from that point and works with area captains to coordinate movements and spot as many different birds as possible. “Our counts are some of the largest if not the largest in the Midwest,” said Jeff Chapman, the coordinator for the Fermilab count and an environmental consultant from Woodridge. This December, birders spotted a record number of different species – 89 – at the Arboretum. The Fermilab count saw an above-average 83 species. By Stephanie Kohl As the temperatures continue to drop, those looking for outdoor recreational activities are often limited. Looking for a sport to play this winter? Catch the Platform tennis fever sweeping the area. Platform tennis is a great winter, spring and fall activity played by men and women of all ages. The game is a racquet sport, derived from tennis, usually played two-against-two. The court is one-third the size of a traditional tennis court and is surrounded by a wire fence. Unlike its tennis counterpart, playing the ball off the fence is not just allowed, but encouraged. The game is played with special paddles that differ in size and shape from tennis racquets. “It really attracts a lot of tennis players who want to get outside during the winter months,” said Laura Berendt, platform tennis professional with the Glen Ellyn Park District. She said the sport attracts tennis players, racquet ball players and squash players of

all ages. Berendt said the game is big on the North Shore and is spreading into the Western Suburbs. Although played outside, Berendt said there is enough movement, players stay warm. The Glen Ellyn Park District’s platform tennis facility, 845 Pershing Ave., features four courts and a modern paddle hut that offers a view of the games. A heating system keeps the deck ice free, allowing yearround play. Court lighting ensures players can continue to enjoy the game after sunset. Whatever your skill or fitness level, the game provides a combination of outdoor exercise, concentration, athleticism and fun. “It’s a small court, so you can talk to your opponents face-to-face,” Berendt said. “It’s really a social sport.”

The park district has about 250 people involved in platform tennis, be it through travel leagues or in-house leagues. For more information, visit gepark.org. adno=S0243616

La Buona Vita brings Italy to La Grange LA GRANGE – When you’re craving the taste of Italy, there’s no need to empty your savings account on plane tickets and hotel stays. Just head to downtown La Grange and visit La Buona Vita to experience delicious, homemade Italian fare. On a stormy December evening, my brother and I decided we were in the mood for a home-cooked, hearty Italian meal, and decided to give La Buona Vita a try. Eager to satisfy our appetites, we perused the long-sheet menu tempting us with everything from steak and lamb chops to seafood. To open the meal, we ordered fried calamari, fully aware of the amount of calories we were about to consume. Once we’d savored the well-prepared appetizer, our server brought our dinner salads and two generously portioned pasta dishes. My fellow diner chose the Linguine Viareggio, featuring linguine with mussels, baby clams and scallops dressed in a lively pomodoro sauce. The meal, according to my brother, had the perfect amount of spicy kick. While my taste buds usually crave a heap of spices, I decided to order the Rigatoni Emilio – pairing the pasta with fresh mozzarella, homemade marinara and garlic. The sauce was light and tasty, a great complement to the creamy mozzarella. After we consumed every last, delectable bite of our food, both my brother and I leaned back and sighed, knowing full well not one more ounce could make its way to our stomachs – we were stuffed. The restaurant also features gluten-free recipes including pasta dishes, so no one has to miss out on the pleasures of Italian dining. And the elegant bar offers craft beer on tap, along with select wines from around the globe. The bar is a focal point along the sleek dining room, where large windows look onto the cityscape. During our next visit, the dinner menu won’t be the only one on my radar, because I’m leaving room for one of the tempting dessert selections: La Buona Vita’s Molten Chocolate Cake. It promises a warm chocolate cake with a gooey center served with vanilla ice cream and raspberry sauce. On our visit, we found the food alone was enough to warrant a return trip, but the service added to the experience. Not only was our server attentive and extremely helpful when
