WEST CHICAGO – A West Chicago resident and World War II veteran celebrating his 90th birthday Saturday got a special surprise from students at Wegner Elementary School. Charles “Chuck” Scheckel, who was born Jan. 5, 1925, received almost 90 birthday cards from students in Mary Szul’s fifth-grade class. Scheckel enlisted in the Navy on his 18th birthday – after failing to convince his parents to let him enlist two years earlier. He went to gunnery school and spent two years on the USS Twining destroyer in the Pacific Ocean. Szul, who has lived next door to Scheckel for 30 years, said she was invited to the party and wanted to do something nice for him. The event seemed like a perfect opportunity for the students: Szul said the district is always looking for ways to promote student community involvement and one of the themes present in the classroom is patriotism. “They jumped right on board and wanted to make birthday cards for him,” she said. Szul’s 30 students worked on multiple cards; some were birthday wishes, while others thanked him for his service in

the Navy. There were stand-up cards, mini crowns, origami and lots of red, white and blue. “They came out really nice,” she said. Family and friends gathered at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6791 in West Chicago for the surprise party. Scheckel said he figured something was up when his out-of-town children all came to visit for the weekend. But he was still surprised – when he arrived at the VFW, he thought they were just having a bingo night. “I was so thrilled and bewildered by the whole thing,” he said. He was shocked to receive so many cards from the kids. “I’m still flabbergasted,” he said. Scheckel said he had a good time at the party. “I had so much of my family and so many of my friends,” he said. “It’s hard to understand why me [to honor].” Szul said as soon as the students came back Monday they asked how the party went and what Scheckel thought of the cards. She said she wanted the students to take part in a nonreciprocal activity. “I believe students at any age should be living to give rather than receive, and they had a lot of fun,” she said.

6 Q & A with the Hearing Doctor New Year’s Unspoken Resolutions Q: Does anyone every say they want to hear better as their New Year’s Resolution?

A: Sadly, no. he way most people communicate that resolution is they wish that others would Dr. Terri Lightbody stop mumbling, (630) 580-5777 stop telling them to get their hearing checked, not get irritated when asking others to repeat what they said, turn down those background noises in restaurants and stores, and etc. Our very sense of cognition, meaning one’s awareness and connection to life around them, comes more through the auditory (hearing) sense than all the other four senses combined. It’s not just what words are spoken but also how those words are spoken that impacts our perception and understanding of our environment and others. When the sense of hearing is afected, it keenly afects the person. It is known that the potential psychological problems that arise from not hearing well are: Stress,

anxiety, anger, frustration, lowered self-esteem, distrust, paranoia, social withdrawal, insecurity, denial, inappropriate social behavior or responses. If a person is not hearing well and they lack conidence to engage socially, what is the solution? Correct the hearing. “Hiding” the hearing problem doesn’t fool anybody. Interpersonal relationships are signiicantly afected when hearing decreases. Here are some of the most common statements patients make when their hearing is evaluated and asked what concerns them about their hearing: - I only have trouble hearing where there is noise. - Certain people mumble so I can’t understand them. - I hear ine when people face me when they are talking. It’s when they turn away I can’t hear. - My (signiicant other) has a sot voice. Everyone wants to hear well. But sometimes hearing well requires help. It starts with a hearing evaluation by a Doctor of Audiology.

Firefighters rescue dog stuck in pipe near West Chicago By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com WEST CHICAGO – Carol Stream firefighters rescued a beagle Friday after it spent about 24 hours stuck in a pipe. Carol Stream Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Bob Hoff said the dog was off its leash Jan. 1 and chased a squirrel. The dog’s owner lost sight of

it before it ran into the culvert. Police were called the next day after faint barking was heard in the area, Hoff said. Firefighters responded about 3 p.m. Crews discovered the beagle was in the pipe and decided to cut it open about a foot away from the dog. They were able to pull the beagle out by gently tugging its hind legs, according to Hoff. He said the dog was dehydrated but did not have any other injuries as a result of the incident. “It was a great job they did,” Hoff said. Crews were on scene for about 40 minutes.

Traffic heads down Interstate 88 on Friday near the Highland Avenue exit near Downers Grove. The speed limit on area tollways could increase to 70 mph, pending a traffic study and approval.

New state laws cover speed limits, medical marijuana and more

Transportation

Boating Legislation sponsored by state Sen. Julie Morrison, D-Deerfield, requires boaters towing a person to display an orange flag. The bill was inspired by Morrison’s nephew, Tony Borcia, a 10-year-old from Libertyville who died after a crash along the Chain O’ Lakes in 2012. Borcia fell off an inner tube being pulled by a boat on Petite Lake and died after being struck by another boat. The flag is meant to alert nearby boaters that a person is being towed. Another law sponsored by Morrison allows police to seize the crafts of intoxicated boaters in certain cases.

After lawmakers raised the speed limit to 70 mph on downstate interstates in 2014, they decided to do the same in 2015 for Chicago-area interstates under the Illinois Tollway Authority’s control. However, it could be a while before 70 mph speed limit signs start popping up along Interstates 88, 294 or 355. The tollway authority still needs to conduct traffic studies to determine if a speed limit in- Children and health crease is warranted. marijuana pilot program with a parent’s consent. Another law requires retailers to sell e-cigarettes either behind the counter, in an age-restricted area or a sealed display case. Lawmakers also expanded schools’ jurisdiction with cyberbullying in 2015. Schools can discipline students who bully others through personal phones and computers, along with school-owned devices. Another measure allows parents to be charged with a crime if their child is caught drinking alcohol inside cars, private planes, motor homes, campers and boats. It expands an existing law that made it illegal for parents to allow underage drinking at their home. The new law extends the prohibition to property owned by parents outside of their homes.

Drivers on tollways in the western suburbs could reach their destination a little faster in 2015. And, for the first time, if a boater along the Cal-Sag Channel or Fox River operates under the influence, the boat can be impounded. Likewise, if underage kids are caught drinking inside cars, motor homes, campers and private planes, their parents now can be charged with a crime. As Illinois residents begin a new year, they face 220 new laws that took effect Jan. 1, approved by lawmakers and Gov. Pat Quinn. Another bill now prohibits police from taking a person’s driver’s license as bond after pulling them over for minor traffic violations such as speeding. Illinois was one of six states that allowed police to confiscate licenses for minor traffic violations, according to Illinois Senate Republicans.

Animal protection Black bears, cougars and gray wolves are now protected species in Illinois. Although still rare, the wild animals in recent years have been spotted around the state, including a black bear seen last summer in a field between Marengo and Belvidere, near Interstate 90. The new designation allows conservation officials to better protect the animals, as they make appearances in Illinois.

POLL QUESTION: How optimistic are your about the economy in 2015? Vote online at mysuburbanlife.com.

Wage hike will hurt those it’s meant to help SPRINGFIELD – Many years ago, I was a minimum-wage worker making $3.35 an hour writing obituaries for the Galesburg Register-Mail. More than a few times during that college summer break I had an editor holler at me, “There is no ‘a’ in cemetery!” But I learned how to meet deadlines, deal with the public and spell a bit better. Most people I know have had similar first-job expeVIEWS riences. They didn’t earn a Scott whole lot, but they learned Reeder enough to help them get a better job down the road. We could spend a lot of time bemoaning the loss of low-paying positions to innovation or we can simply accept that businesses will seek the most cost-effective solutions. That’s why talk of raising the state’s minimum wage is troubling. While it will result in pay raises for some lucky individuals, it will result in fewer jobs for the state’s low-skill workers. As the cost of labor goes up, the demand will go down. When I mentioned this economic principle to a friend, he asked, “Then, who will do the work if positions are eliminated?” Look no further than McDonald’s for the answer. According to a recent Malcolm Berko column, the fast-food chain anticipates adding touch screens in 2,000 of its 15,000 restaurants in 2015. Customers, rather than employees, will be the ones pecking away at the touch screens and sending their orders directly to the kitchen. According to the Berko analysis, this will result in the elimination of four to six employees per location, reducing labor costs by $110,000 per location. Many of these fast food workers who would see their jobs eliminated earn the minimum wage. Raising the minimum wage will accelerate the loss of these and other jobs. Most folks earning minimum wage are either younger than 25 or working part time, a 2012 study conducted by the Cato Institute found. This runs contrary to the narrative of Gov. Pat Quinn and others. In November 2014, Quinn said, “Our minimum wage is $8.25. It is not enough for a mom, a dad or anyone to raise a family on.” He’ll get no argument from me on that. But the Cato study found less than 5 percent of those earning minimum wage are heads of households. So raising the minimum wage will do little to help those trying to raise families and will do much to hurt young people trying to enter the workforce. And, in this economy, that’s the last thing we want to do.

Downers Grove should consider village complex

There has been a lot of talk about spending $52 million dollars on a new village complex to include the village hall, police department and fleet maintenance. If residents do not feel it is appropriate to spend this amount of money, why doesn’t Downers Grove consider using an existing building that would only need interior work? Using an existing building should cut down dramatically on the final cost. There is an unoccupied Dominick’s store on 63rd Street, which should have ample space to meet the needs of Downers Grove. There is also ample parking. If that amount of parking is not needed, then perhaps a fleet building could be built in the parking lot area. Downers Grove could sell the existing No more fireworks at village hall and use the proceeds midnight New Year’s Day toward the new facility. Although private four-year colleges are noting their very minimal tuition hikes this year, they have a history of disregarding the inflation rate in many years by large percents. Yet, students are burdened with loans that will last a lifetime, and at the same time, find it hard to find decent-paying jobs. Why not “get even” by spending the first two years at a high quality community college like the College of DuPage? Then, transfer as a junior, which becomes quite easy for most four-year colleges. You’ll end up with as good an education, less student loans and probably save at least $50,000 to $200,000 in the process.

I am disappointed that after news releases about how [the] Glen Ellyn Park District has stockpiled money, that we don’t reap the reward in [the] form of a tax reduction. If the board members bothered to look up on their master plans and surveys, COD and the village of Glen Ellyn have implemented no tax increase recently. The community has supported GEPD’s expansions for a decade. It’s time for a breather.

WHEATON – Next time you’re in downtown Wheaton late on a Friday or Saturday night, don’t be surprised if you hear the sounds of laughter on Front Street. Those chuckles are the work of the Westside Improv Studio. Created by longtime improvisers Jeff Ash of Glen Ellyn and Brendon Culhane of Wheaton, the new studio in a small, underground room at 123 W. Front St. is offering twice-weekly improv shows, as well as classes. Both have proven to be a hit since starting in December. “It happened so organically and so quickly, I can’t even tell you how amazed I’ve been,” Ash said. When Ash moved to DuPage County in late 2013 after several years in Los Angeles, he thought his dream of starting an improv theater was all but dead.

WHEATON – Local coffee roaster and cafe River City Roasters is hoping for some help living up to its motto of “Coffee, connection, community” during its Africa Party fundraiser Friday. Tickets are being sold to offset costs for a February trip to Kenya and Uganda, when some of the roaster’s owners and operators intend to begin a direct trade relationship with coffee farmers. Co-owner Erich Goepel said the transition to direct trade, where the buyer pays the grower the full price of the coffee, was something the roaster has wanted to do since before opening its Wheaton location more than a year ago. “It’s about getting high quality coffee and connecting people in Wheaton with the farmers in Kenya and Uganda ... and forming that community,” he said. “We can impact this whole community over there and have that connection through coffee and roasting.” Direct trade practices generally give farmers more for their product than they re-

If River City Roasters paid $5 per pound for a certain type of coffee, even the most socially responsible distributor would take $1 or $2 for importing and compensation, said Manager Beth Fivecoat. By forging relationships with the farmers themselves, more of that $5 can go toward the growers’ bottom line, while the cafe would spend about the same amount.

Representatives from the roaster will make the trip with assistance from the Wheaton nonprofit Venture Corps, which helps fund sustainable business projects in east Africa. Venture Corps approached the cafe several months ago, Fivecoat said. “Direct trade is just the most ethical way to do business when you’re a coffee roaster,” she said. “We’ve done our best to facilitate community in a local sense, but in a global sense we definitely want to expand.” Despite their enthusiasm, cultivating grower relationships costs money, Fivecoat said. But as the date drew near, River City Roasters decided the trip was something they needed to do and began brainstorming how to pay for it. Goepel said he doesn’t foresee the cafe being able to make a full transition to direct trade coffee for a few years, but hopes to continue to foster partnerships. The ultimate goal is to help start a direct trade coffee farm in a remote village in India and reinvest the profits into the community.

4 questions to ask before purchasing a new home B

922 Winslow Circle, GE

Re/Max Suburban

uying a new house is an exciting time in your life. Because it is one of the most important investments you’ll make for yourself and your family, there are many important factors to consider. Before making a purchase, take these four questions into account. Having the answers will allow you to enjoy your new home now and in the years ahead. 1. What exterior color palette speaks to you? Your home is a reflection of your personality and can be an extension of your lifestyle. When buying or designing a new house, contemplate its curb appeal. First impressions matter, so it’s important to consider architectural style, exterior color and details like trim and landscaping. Coordinate the trim, soffits and doors with the primary siding color for a polished look. To help, look to popular and complementary color combinations developed by the color professionals at James Hardie: www.jameshardie.com/pdf/colorplus-color-combinations. pdf. 2. Is your home protected from environmental elements? With today’s ever-changing climate, extreme weather is a reality in all corners of the country. From hurricanes and blizzards to wind and wildfires, select siding and trim products that help protect your home. Consider your options carefully. Vinyl siding can melt and wood is susceptible to rot. James Hardie siding products are engineered specifically for climate zones, so whether you live in a cold, wet, hot or dry part of the country, you can choose the siding that will stand up to weather conditions in your area. 3. Is your new home built using sustainable products? Green building is popular these days, in part because an energy-efficient home can save a homeowner money on heating and cooling bills. By choosing a home clad in 100 percent sustainable and efficient material, you’re consuming less energy and reducing your environmental footprint. 4. What maintenance will your new home require? Selecting or buying a home made with low-maintenance building materials can lower the chances of large ticket home repairs, or prevent them altogether. Wood siding and trim requires frequent repainting or replacement, and vinyl may warp, melt or fade. Considering durable and longer-lasting fiber cement siding can minimize the need for repairs. Additionally, purchasing a product with a strong warranty is a great way to maximize and protect your investment.

FREDDIE MAC

Grew the private investor base to more than 140 domestic and international investors. Typical investors are life insurance companies, banks, pension funds, money managers and hedge funds, some of whom assume first loss positions, reducing taxpayer risk. Inclusion of K-Deals in the Barclays U.S. Aggregate and Global Aggregate bond indices in June.

2014 Highlights: Continued to support affordable rental housing through securitization. Approximately 90 percent of the apartment units Freddie Mac finances are affordable to households earning up to the area median income, and most of those loans are securitized. Issued $21.3 billion in K-Deals in 2014 and securitized almost $93 billion in multifamily loans since the program started in 2009, backing approximately $79 billion in guaranteed certificates and $13.5 billion in unguaranteed certificates. Introduced and issued $189 million in Q Certificates that are backed by $215 million in multifamily loans not underwritten by Freddie Mac at the time of origination but that meet the company’s current underwriting standards. Q Certificates were introduced this fall. Issued $683 million in M Certificates backed by $747 million in multifamily loans. M Certificates are fully guaranteed tax-exempt and taxable securities supported by pools of unenhanced tax-exempt and taxable multifamily housing collateral.

“The K-Deal program has become the benchmark for Agency CMBS. 2014 was our second largest year for securities issuance and we now have just short of $100 billion in K Certificates outstanding. This year we also issued Q and M Certificates, adding variety to the investment opportunities for our customers. Part of the reason for our success is the exceptional credit performance of our collateral. At the end of the year, total K-Deal delinquencies amounted to 1 basis point.” “The multifamily market is healthy and we expect to issue approximately $25 billion in multifamily securities across 17 to 20 K-Deals next year. Also, in 2015 we expect to introduce a few new types of collateral to our securitizations, including 10-year floaters and small balance loans.”

Wheaton North senior Nick Jordan has been a standout performer throughout the early stages of the season for the Falcons. Santaromita: What’s it like playing four games in five days? Jordan: It brings me back to my middle schools days and AAU type stuff. It’s hard on the body, but it’s fun to play a lot of basketball and just play games.

Santaromita: Does that bring anything out of the team, being around each other more often? Jordan: Yeah, it definitely

ELMHURST – If responding to adversity is a test of a good team, Wheaton North passed. The Falcons suffered a onepoint overtime loss to DePaul College Prep on Dec. 27, 2014, in the second round of York’s Jack Tosh Holiday Tournament. After a day off Dec. 28, North responded with two consolation wins against teams with winning records in St. Patrick and the host Dukes. “We had sort of a gut-wrenching loss Saturday and it was great to beat a very good St. Pat’s and a very good York team and feel good about ourselves going into a couple days off,” coach Dave Brackmann said. “It was great to see because that was certainly a very tough loss [Dec. 27, 2014,] and we easily could have felt sorry for ourselves and we didn’t, which is good.” After beating Waubonsie Valley 41-24 in the tournament’s first game, the Falcons took DePaul Prep down to the wire. Nick Traversa hit a 3 in the final minute of regulation to tie the game. In overtime, Traversa had a potential game-winning shot at the buzzer fall short in the 41-40 loss after the opposition made two free throws with 12.8 seconds left. The Falcons (8-3) then beat St. Patrick 74-64 and York 65-46 in consolation play. “We certainly would have loved to win on [Dec. 27, 2014] and get a chance to keep going in that winners column, but all in all we took strides this week and I think we can learn from that loss for sure,” Brackmann said. “We take a lot of positives out of this week.” Nick Jordan scored in double figures in all four tournament games, averaging 15.5 points per game, and was selected to the all-tournament team. Traversa also averaged double figures at 12 per game. Five Falcons, Jordan, Traversa, Luke Anthony, Jake Heggeland and Rowan McGowen, had 11 or more against York.

“We are a balanced team,” Brackmann said. “That’s a great luxury to have, not relying on one or two guys. It’s difficult for defenses to focus on just one or two. We got different guys step up on different days. The last couple days we got everybody sort of clicking.” The Falcons next play Friday at St. Francis on and return to DuPage Valley Conference play a week later against Naperville North.
