WHEATON – The Community Unit School District 200 Board of Education will soon take a fresh look at some of its infrastructure needs, including the Jefferson Early Childhood Center. During a Jan. 28 meeting, the board directed staff to have architecture firm Legat Architects create a three-year facility plan with target projects and budgets, as well as solicit outside plans to reconstruct the center. The building has long been of concern for the district, with its lack of space and handicap accessibility for its majority special needs population. A $17.6 million referendum to replace the center failed in 2013. “We do have to come back to conversations around Jefferson ... so that the board understands the work that needs to be done to the building as-is and the costs associated with it,” Superintendent Jeff Schuler said. That includes figuring out the price tag to update or replace the more than 60-year-old facility, he said. The board commended Legat for its previous work on district facilities during the past 20 years.

“In my opinion I was not able to bring the board to a united vision on a solution for that school. That is my greatest regret of all my 16 years of serving on this school board.” Rosemary Swanson D-200 board member

However, they ultimately asked staff to begin a qualification-based selection to pick a new firm to guide work on Jefferson and provide insight on how the district should cater its spaces to accommodate the classroom needs of the future. The decision to introduce a new firm wasn’t based on the failure of the previous Jefferson plan, Vice President Jim Vroman said. Board member Rosemary Swanson, who was president during the 2013 referendum, said she was responsible for its outcome. “In my opinion I was not able to

bring the board to a united vision on a solution for that school,” she said. “That is my greatest regret of all my 16 years of serving on this school board.” Board member Brad Paulsen encouraged the board to work with teachers, students, parents, building leadership and outside stakeholders to develop a proposal with more consensus. “Good plans that get support are developed from the bottom up, not the top down,” he said. It would likely take two to three months to get proposals for the projects, Paulsen said. Because of the nature of the qualification-based selection, the district would not get a chance to see the estimated costs of the various plans before accepting. Should the involved parties not agree on a price, the district would move on to the next proposal. President Barbara Intihar was concerned the district’s strategy would push the project too late into the year, but most of the board thought it was worth the time investment. “This is such a critical project for the district that we shouldn’t let the calendar dictate to us,” board member Jim Gambaiani said. “The scope of this project is so large that we want to get it right.”

A Joliet man has been found guilty of murder in the death of an 8-monthold boy from West Chicago. Jury deliberations began Tuesday afternoon in the second murder trial of Santos Loza. The verdict was returned about 4:30 p.m. Prosecutors finished their case Monday with a pathologist testifying about the injuries that led to 8-month-

only person with the infant in the time frame the injuries were inflicted, according to prosecutors. “That time line is completely dependent on your believing Sandra Sitko [Kevion’s mother] beyond a reasonable doubt,” defense attorney Joseph Lopez told jurors Tuesday. At the time of Kevion’s death, Sitko was dating Loza, and she and her sons were living with her father in West Chicago. With Sitko sitting 20 feet away, Lo-

pez speculated she was responsible for her son’s death. “She said she saw this relationship going somewhere. Did she kill her son to start over?” he asked. Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Chris Koch said that idea “goes against common sense.” “He’s actually arguing she killed her 8-month-old son to start over, but you can’t kill a 5-year-old [Kevion’s brother], I guess. He’s OK,” Koch asked jurors.

WEST CHICAGO – For some, inspiration can come from anywhere. When it came to naming his coffee shop, Enrique Martinez got his inspiration from Red Oak Nature Center in Batavia. Bubo Coffee, which Martinez opened in August in West Chicago, is named after a display he saw in the facility. “Bubo is the scientific name given to a Great Horned Owl,” he said. The Aurora resident had been struggling to come up with a name for his shop. One day he was in the nature center, noticed the name and instantly knew he had found something. “I’ve always liked owls to begin with,” Martinez said. “It was short and kind of catchy.” Martinez decided he wanted to start his own coffee shop because he had trouble finding coffee he liked in the suburbs. “I would always have bad experiences when I go to coffee shops,” Martinez said. “It wasn’t up to my standards.” He wanted a good-tasting coffee that was consistent and went to several shops to see what worked well and what didn’t. Martinez found his drive-thru location at 2013 Franciscan Way. The shop has an outdoor seating Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com Enrique Martinez works behind one of two drive-thru windows Wednesday at Bubo Cof- area that oversees some trees, but it’s currently not very functional. fee in West Chicago.

8 Q & A with the Hearing Doctor Case history questions

Q: Why do you ask questions about cancer, diabetes, heart trouble, and smoking during your exam? What does that have to do with my hearing?

A: he truth is, we Dr. Terri Lightbody (630) 580-5777

take a health history as many health issues can afect the auditory

system. We look at the risk factors that are known to contribute to hearing loss. Besides genetics, environmental exposure, and aging, other health conditions can worsen a hearing condition. By identifying risk factors during a hearing exam, an Audiologist can provide counseling to help the patient either reduce the risk of developing hearing loss or if hearing loss is present, minimize its efects on the person. In America, 1 in 5 people have a hearing loss, yet almost 80% do nothing about it. Untreated hearing loss has potential devastating efects on the mental, social and physical well-being of an individual. his is because our sense of cognition comes more through the sense of hearing

than all four other senses combined. A detailed case history helps to establish a complete hearing health proile. One can get a clear picture of the patient’s current hearing experience: Is the patient struggling to hear? Is trouble hearing afecting other areas of life? A hearing health proile also aids in identifying potential red lags. A red lag is an indicator for the need of a medical evaluation with a medical doctor. Not all patients we see are referred to see a medical doctor, only those who have a red lag in their evaluation or certain hearing test results. Another beneit from taking a detailed case history is the determination of the patient’s dependence on others for care. Prescription for ampliication takes into account the patient’s ability to manipulate small objects, comprehend what is happening, and candidacy for hearing aids based on the person’s degree of diiculty in hearing others. he goal for every patient is a successful outcome. In order to help bring about a successful outcome, the Audiologist needs to understand the patient’s overall health.

About the author: Dr. Terri Lightbody is a nationally known Audiologist and has her private practice at Danada Professional Center. Dr. Lightbody is the recipient of the 2014 Wheaton Star Award, in recognition of her volunteer and community service work. WeGo man gets 4 years for child porn By JILLIAN DUCHNOWSKI jduchnowski@shawmedia.com A 39-year-old professional photographer from West Chicago, who police said repeatedly asked a teenager to send him nude photographs of herself, is serving four years in prison. Todd Kornoski, of the 1100 block of Lillian Lane, pleaded guilty recently to a single count of soliciting child porn o g r a p h y , w h i c h i s Todd punishable by four to 15 Kornoski years in prison. In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors dropped several similar charges involving the same victim. Kornoski operated Ashley’s Realm photography out of his home, police said. According to the business’ website, Kornoski offered wedding, family and boudoir photos. The victim, who lives in Shabbona, is a former client of his. Her parents notified police after a July 30, 2013, incident. He is serving a three-year prison sentence for possession of child pornography in DuPage County at the same time as his four-year sentence from DeKalb County, prison records show. He is expected to be released on parole in September, after being given credit for good behavior and time served while the cases were pending. Kornoski will be on parole for two years. A court order prevents him from contacting the Shabbona teenager until January 2020.

School districts work to develop a shared vision and direction In late January, the school boards and administration from Benjamin School District 25, West Chicago Elementary School District 33, Winfield School District 34 and Community High School District 94 met to discuss common vision, leadership and direction. This annual meeting of the COMMUNITY boards and administrators VOICE serves many purposes, chiefly Doug as a time to learn, reflect and Domeracki collaborate with leaders who serve a common population. Meeting locations rotate through the four districts, the most recent being held at Leman Middle School in West Chicago. Topics are chosen and developed by the board of education members. This year, the topic was Vision 20/20 – the opportunity for educators and school boards to take back education, to be the architects of our own future rather than at the mercy of legislation. In November 2012, the Illinois Association of School Administrators initiated a visioning process in partnership with the Illinois Principals Association, the Illinois Association of School Business Officials, the Illinois Association of School Boards, the Superintendents’ Commission for the Study of Demographics and Diversity and the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of Schools to unite the education community and to develop a long-range blueprint for improving public education in Illinois. Vision 20/20 believes it is our responsibility as educators to reflect upon the current state of education in Illinois and take action to create an education system that meets the needs of all students. Through the Vision 20/20 process, four areas for prioritization emerged: highly effective educators, 21st century learning, shared accountability and equitable and adequate funding. As the boards and administrators learned about this vision, dialogued with each other and exchanged ideas, one thing became clear: more opportunities to collaborate were needed. The high school Board of Education has sought to meet with the feeder school boards to drill down through data analysis and discuss how we are serving students. Several meetings have occurred and a greater understanding of each other, the issues that are faced and the students we serve have led to meaningful collaboration and the opportunity to develop a shared vision to better serve our communities.

Habitat For Humanity volunteer Rich Dickson thanks volunteers and members of the Thrivent Organization during the groundbreaking ceremony in West Chicago.

Becoming a homeowner is a transformational event for any family – one that is unattainable for many. The new home going up at on Pomeroy Court in West Chicago will bridge that gap for someone once it is complete. Built by Habitat for Humanity, it’ll be the 12th such house in that subdivision. We look forward to seeing the joy it brings to the eventual recipient. The drumbeat for some kind of intervention in the Robert Breuder retirement package continues unabated. State Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, introduced a plan to ban big severance packages like the $763,000 one Breuder is set to receive. State Rep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo, has demanded an audit of College of DuPage’s finances. The silence from Breuder and the College of DuPage board in the face of this ongoing criticism is deafening.

SOUND OFF

Should there be any other namesake to the COD Homeland Security Education Center? Considering the less-than-honorable shenanigans of the COD trustees and the controversy surrounding the lucrative buyout of Robert Breuder, I ask the COD trustees to please do something honorable and name the COD Homeland Security Education Center after Sgt. Robert Miller, a [Medal of Honor] recipient and native of Glen Ellyn who was killed while fighting for the very freedoms you have as you make such important severance package decisions of your less-than-honorable president!

Blame Glen Ellyn for COD fiasco So the Breuder buyout outrages the Glen Ellyn community? How very interesting, particularly since our Board of Trustees are elected by the same community. ... We knew exactly what the great majority of these people were all about when we put them in their board seats. And now we’re outraged? ... The community has exactly the COD Board of Trustees it wanted, and now the community is getting exactly what it deserves from it’s COD Board of Trustees. Glen Ellyn residents need to end their knee-jerk conservatism and automatic dismissal of concerns of the faculty, pay attention to who is seeking board of trustee seats and who may be receiving their vote.

only solution is to build a whole new Eighty-six the D-41 request building costing tens of millions [of dol- Every time someone suggests that lars]? … If they can’t solve it, let’s find existing D-41 facilities can suffice, the new administrators and board members who can. See SOUND OFF, page 14

Defending Glen Ellyn Park District I don’t understand the person who keeps complaining about the Glen Ellyn Park District taxes in the Sound Off column. That’s a pretty small piece of my property tax bill, and it seems like we get a lot for that money. My friends in Wheaton pay almost twice as much to their park district. Even Lombard is higher, and they don’t offer nearly as much as we have here in Glen Ellyn. I’m more concerned about our school taxes – that’s where most of my money goes!

rified at the way six [College of DuPage] trustees have conducted themselves. It makes me wonder … what “benefits” they were granted (by President Breuder) to award the outrageous payout to him. I’ve spoken to some friends about the mess and they seem to feel that they are helpless to “do anything to change it,” so why get upset? In a way I can understand that; however, if we all sit back and do nothing, issues such as this will continue to go “unchecked” and our taxes will continue to increase because nobody is objecting. ... There must be something that can be done to stop the outrageous payout to Breuder and also stop his name from being plastered across a building. That is a slap in the face to this community!

As if the COD board approving [Robert] Breuder’s buyout by a vote of 6-1 for the second time wasn’t enough, there at the bottom of the … page was an ad for the Waterleaf restaurant at COD, which is running in the red. Can we spell fiasco?

nlurz@shawmedia.com WHEATON – Soon, parents of students with special needs around Community Unit School District 200 will have a formal organization. More than 50 people attended a meeting Feb. 4 at the district’s school service center as organizers took steps to form the district’s first special needs Parent Teacher Association. Chris Crabtree, president of the district’s PTA executive committee and board of education candidate, said there are PTAs at every school in the district except for high schools. “But our special needs population is spread out through all those buildings. ... It makes it hard for parents with children with special needs to have a group within their own building,” she said. Crabtree said she was approached with the idea by the Illinois PTA organization in November and worked closely with district staff and others to bring it to fruition. Several other area districts have them, she said, including Plainfield 202 and 204. The goal of the association won’t be to raise money, said Assistant Superintendent for Student Services Joanne Panopoulos. It would work to connect parents of children from pre-K through the district’s post-high school transition program to one another and resources. “The value ... is giving parents in this group people to bounce ideas off of and help get through things at home or school,” she said. “It can help build relationships.” The organization also will work toward bringing public speakers to PTA events, Panopoulos said. Other goals for the organization

Next meeting n WHAT: Special needs PTA meeting n WHEN: 7 p.m. Tuesday n WHERE: Monroe Middle School,

1855 Manchester Road, Wheaton include making district events and activities more special needs friendly and serving as a communication mechanism. “This is a huge benefit – to be able to reach more parents and get our message across and support them at a greater scale,” Panopoulos said. “It’s the best scenario we could have asked for, a two-way street.” Crabtree said she hoped a liaison from every district building would be represented at each of the PTA’s meetings. Public response has been strong and positive, both women said. There are already organizations and dozens of parents interested in helping. No matter what role it takes on in the future, Crabtree said, it would be driven by the wants and needs of parents and students. The PTA will meet Tuesday at Monroe Middle School to elect members of the board, form some of the association’s guiding goals and principles and begin collecting its $12 per person annual dues, Panopoulos said. The organization will have its own social media presence and website for involvement, Crabtree said. “It’s really about creating an awareness within the school community that all children have gifts they bring to that school,” she said. “That awareness can come from a group like this.”

• SOUND OFF Continued from page 11 board shuts it down and says, “No, this is the only way.” Why isn’t the board being more open-minded when clearly the people they represent have concerns? The board is supposed to represent us, but it feels like the board represents the school, always convincing us to pay for what the school wants to do. That’s backward. We tell the school what to do. We do that through the board. Represent us, the majority, not just a vocal few who want eternal expansion – on the backs of taxpayers. We don’t need to spend tens of millions for a service that a tiny percentage of people will utilize. This feels like the pool referendum all over again.

District 200 payroll deduction plan is the wrong answer [Wheaton] School District 200 now has the lowest-paid teachers … in all of DuPage County. Compared to local high school districts, CUSD 200 salary differences are even more striking. Yet, [the Board of Education] doesn’t propose an ED Referendum (the last one was more than 30 years ago), but instead a payroll deduction plan so CUSD 200 teachers can donate part of their salary to help fund district supply and technology needs! Any wonder that CUSD 200 is beginning to lose teachers and is no longer able to attract the best to apply?

Pensioners beware Illinois public pensioners beware. With the increasingly massive amount of state of Illinois dollars devoted to public pensions, soon nothing will be left to cover other essential services: social needs, public safety needs, highway needs, school needs, etc. In order for politicians to get re-elected, they have consistently granted funds they did not have to pensions. They shouldn’t have done it, but they did. The choice seems to be for those on public pensions to halt their obsession with “you promised us” and make some minor modifications or face drastic measures (like Detroit) and end up with far less in the long run. Among the alternatives that will be far more costly to everyone, including pensioners, are state of Illinois income tax increases, reorganization through bankruptcies or drastic cuts in essential services.

Most children do not see a dentist on average until they are 3 ½ years old, when in fact it’s recommended that a child should be seen by a dentist before age one and within six months of their first tooth erupting. It is important for parents or caregivers to establish good oral health habits, like visiting the dentist, when children are young to establish a lifetime of good oral health. Parents should establish a relationship with their family dentist just as they do with their pediatrician. Studies show that early preventative Charise M. Petrelli DDS dental care, like check-ups and cleanings, can prevent future treatment for serious oral health problems, avoiding costly treatment and unnecessary pain and suffering for a child. As you well know, tooth decay is 100% preventable. However, many parents believe that because baby teeth fall out, they are less important. Here are some great tips for parents of young children to help them establish great oral health care habits at an early age: • Newborn to 2 Months: Wipe gums with soft cloth after each feeding. • 4 Months: Cleanse gums/ teeth with washcloth or soft toothbrush. • 6 Months to One Year: Cleanse gums/ teeth with washcloth or soft toothbrush and a dab of fluoridated toothpaste, preferably one that contains xylitol to help prevent cavities. • One year & Up: Cleanse teeth with soft toothbrush and luoridated toothpaste, again one that contains xylitol. What are some alternative tricks to fight any viral infection? (colds and flu)

A:

Well it just so happens in talking with a now famous Nurse from CDH that a simple lowly amino acid at the right dose can K.O. any virus and the sooner the better. L-Lysine one of our amino acids in our diet has this killing effect on virus. She told me the how it works details and was dead on and it explains the why. The dose needs to be 1,000 mg every 12 hours for as long as the symptoms continue. L-Lysine is sold in 500mg tablets. Two tablets every 12 hours can do some good for kicking off some virus.

Fuego cantina celebrates Mexican favorites BROOKFIELD – Directly across from the Metra rail crossing, on the corner of Grand Boulevard and Brookfield Avenue, sits 1-year-old Fuego, a quaint respite from the everyday. In a cleverly designed building, the traditionally decorated Fuego is a cantina in the truest sense, a handy place to stop for a margarita or a cold beer and some tasty Mexican classics. My friend and I grabbed a small table by one of the expansive windows in the relaxed space accented by stone. We began our meal with a basket of light and salty chips and salsa, and an order of the Ceviche de Fuego, a chilled blend of chopped shrimp, tomatoes, onions, peppers, cilantro and lime – lots of lime. Elegantly served in a tall martini glass, the seafood dish was a refreshing and tasty start to our experience. I opted for the carnita dinner, featuring slow-roasted pork sauteed with onions to create some oh-so-yummy caramelized edges. It’s like the Mexican answer to a classic pulled pork, with complex seasonings and just enough bite. My friend ordered the chili relleno dinner, a fresh poblano pepper filled with Mexican cheeses. It was enclosed in a flaky crust, similar to a puff pastry, baked to a golden brown. But the real star was the homemade ranchero sauce. Smoky and rich, this blend of tomatoes, peppers and herbs is cooked a long time – until it turns thick, deep red and delicious. (The chef really should bottle the sauce and sell it at the bar.) And although we were stuffed, the dessert menu was calling, so we ordered the churro bites. They were decadent and sweet, fried crisp and covered in a syrupy cinnamon sugar, with warm chocolate sauce for dipping. A variety of classic Mexican favorites, from tacos to flautas, rounds out the menu at Fuego. Quench your thirst

The Wildcats have had some ups and downs this season, but the second half of Tuesday’s game was a glimpse of what they are capable of when things are clicking. “We can definitely take something away from what we did [Tuesday],” Wallner said. “Scoring almost 40 points in the second half? We have trouble scoring 25 in a game against some teams, so the fact that we scored almost 40 in the second half is something that can help raise their confidence.”

West Chicago’s Hailey Sartore gets fouled Tuesday as she goes up for a shot during their game against Hinsdale South.

DARIEN – The way things were going for Bria Williams, a blindfolded half-court heave would have found the bottom of the basket. The West Chicago junior didn’t miss a basket in the second half and helped lead the Wildcats’ comeback effort in a nonconference girls basketball game against Hinsdale South on Tuesday. “She had one of those nights,” West Chicago head coach Kim Wallner said. “I told her to enjoy it because they don’t always happen.” Despite Williams’ best efforts, the Wildcats came up short, falling 68-54 as the Hornets pulled away down the stretch. Williams scored eight of her team-high 20 points during a 12-1 run in the fourth quarter that trimmed a 54-35 deficit to 55-47. Hailey Sartore put back her own miss to cap the run, and Mae Elizabeth Gimre knocked down a shot during the surge. Williams, Gimre and freshman Sofia Radice also were catalysts during a 10-0 run at the end of the third quarter that made it a 45-32 contest. Freshman Sierra Koenig also saw significant playing time in the second half as West Chicago (8-17) battled back from a 34-15 halftime deficit. “We’ve got four seniors, but the most of the group that was bringing us back was not seniors.” Wallner said. “There were a couple juniors and a freshman, and I was bringing in another freshman and junior. We’re trying to find that mix of seniors and young kids helping. Our better games have been when all of us show up and play well.” Gimre, Sartore, Mariel Culloton and Cristina Hurtado are the four seniors who will be honored tonight before West Chicago’s game against
