WeGo man gets 10 years in prison after raping girl By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com A West Chicago man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after raping a girl numerous times over a fouryear period, according to documents from the U.S. District Court’s Northern District of Illinois. Nicacio Jaimes-Moreno was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to transportation of a minor across state lines for criminal sexual purposes. Ten years was the maximum sentence he could receive, court documents stated. According to the Govern-
Be the first to know Be the first to read about news in your area by signing up for our breaking news text alerts at http://shawurl.com/texts. ment’s Sentencing Memorandum – which outlines what the prosecutors felt was an appropriate sentence and why – Jaimes-Moreno raped the girl routinely from May 2006 to October 2010. “The seriousness of [Jaimes-Moreno’s] criminal conduct is abundantly clear, and, indeed, no words from the gov-
ernment can come close to capturing with any adequacy the devastating impact that [his] crime has had upon [the victim],” the memo stated, adding Jaimes-Moreno’s conduct was “depraved, ruthless and brutal.” The abuse began after Jaimes-Moreno was deported to Mexico from Arkansas and the girl went with him, according to the memo. He raped the girl, who was 11 at the time, about twice a week, and continued to do so when they moved to Santa Maria, Calif., in 2007, the memo stated. The two lived in Tulsa, Okla., from October 2007 to
spring 2010, and according to the memo, Jaimes-Moreno continued raping the girl the whole time. Jaimes-Moreno then moved with the girl to Indiana, and continued to rape her, the memo stated. They moved to West Chicago in August 2010 and the girl was removed from Jaimes-Moreno’s home Oct. 12 of that year by West Chicago police officers after he threatened to kill her and her mother, according to the memo. Police searched Jaimes-Moreno’s residence and found a handgun, two rifles, more than 500 rounds of am-
munition and fraudulent identification cards, the memo stated. In the memo, prosecutors called Jaimes-Moreno’s crimes “heinous and unconscionable” because he would not allow the girl to attend school. “[The victim] last attended the fourth grade in Arkansas in 2006 … and did not resume attending school until … after she was rescued,” the memo stated. Kimberly Nerheim, public affairs officer for the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of Illinois, said it’s likely Jaimes-Moreno will be deported after serving his sentence.

D-200 candidates talk facilities, funding By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com WHEATON – During a forum March 26, the five candidates running for Community Unit School District 200 Board of Education came together to discuss their qualifications and opinions. Participants included incumbents Jim Vroman and Jim Gambaiani, District 200 PTA Council President Chris Crabtree, real estate agent Judith Zapf, and retired businessman and district special education aide Gary Tonn. Below are select highlights from the forum, which was hosted at Wheaton North High School by the League of Women Voters of Wheaton and the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce.
On why they should be elected and why they are running Crabtree: My experience as your PTA council president has allowed me to establish relationships across the district, and I’m comfortable in a capacity to unite people from all of our schools. ... For the past nine years, I have devoted on average 30 to 40 hours a week as a volunteer in the school community. I do not serve with an agenda but with an open mind. Gambaiani: In the months and years to come, our district will be faced with financial challenges both locally and at the state level that could have significant impact on student learning. ... The community deserves board members who have the experience and the courage to make sound financial decisions on very complex matters. of more than $186,000. Change orders on the contracts have hiked the total payments, according to board documents. • The Chicago Tribune, citing law enforcement and other sources, reported Monday that the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office has issued grand jury subpoenas for records relating to expenses for school administrators at Waterleaf, the restaurant on campus. The Tribune has reported COD President Robert Breuder and other administrators expensed more than $190,000 on food and drinks in the past three years at Waterleaf. • Dan Bailey, a candidate in the upcoming election for COD Board of Trustees, claimed more than $2 million was handed out to College of DuPage Foundation board members without having to submit a competitive bid. Bailey’s allegations prompted Birt to launch a “review” of the practice. This is all on top of alleged fraud at the college’s radio station, Breuder’s sweetheart deal to step down as president with an extra $762,000 in his pocket after an embarrassing email leaked, and the board’s continued dithering on whether to allow an audit of its finances. Students at the school pay $140 per credit hour. That, and taxpayers across the suburbs, in multiple counties, are paying for all of this. If you haven’t voted already, you’re going to want to weigh in. You can see what 11 of the 12 candidates have to say, both incumbents and challengers, at http://shawurl. com/1tfx. Spring marks the season of new beginnings and times of great family memories. The West Chicago Park District is committed to helping families create lasting memories through events that bring them together for old family traditions or inspiring new COMMUNITY ones. VOICE In many families, it is a Lily tradition to have a picture Medina with the Easter Bunny. However, every year, that becomes a harder task for parents. Long lines at the mall and outrageous prices for photos can turn an old family tradition into a parent’s nightmare. On Saturday, the West Chicago Park District will host Breakfast With The Bunny at the ARC Center. Families can enjoy breakfast, an Easter story and crafts, and you can bring your own camera and have a chance to visit with the bunny and take photos. The event will be hosted from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at the ARC Center, 201 W. National St. The fee is $8 per resident and $10 for nonresidents. Following the event, families are invited to attend the American Legion’s annual free Egg Hunt at 10:30 a.m. at Reed Keppler Park. Along with family traditions come values. Instilling appreciation for nature and the environment are values that have been lost as technology has progressed. A few organizations continually try to bring awareness and those values back through special events that bring the family out of their homes and submerges them in nature. The West Chicago Park District invites families to celebrate Arbor Day on April 25 at Reed Keppler Park, one of the largest and most beautiful parks in town. Participants can take part in tree planting, climbing demonstrations and wood utilization. Kids also will have a chance to meet our special guest, the Lorax, and hear him read stories in the park. The free event will be from 9 a.m. to noon and is open to all ages. To obtain additional information, please contact the West Chicago Park District at 630-231-9474 or e-mail info@we-goparks.org.
College of DuPage serves about 28,000 students a semester, making it the second-largest undergraduate institution in Illinois. It has more than 90 certificate and degree programs. It’s a jewel of the western suburbs, extending beyond its namesake county to serve students from Lemont to Naperville, from La Grange to Elmhurst to West Chicago, all from its campus in Glen Ellyn. That litany of good things makes the ongoing torrent of bad news from and about COD leadership all the more outrageous for those of us who live and pay taxes in the school’s district. The recent hiring of a $250-an-hour public relations firm, for instance, fits the textbook definition of irony perfectly. Spending taxpayer money to convince those same taxpayers that you didn’t waste their money is so ludicrous on its face that one wonders if the board members piled out of a clown car when they arrived at the meeting where this decision took place. “I think it’s clear that there is need for a PR firm to help the public understand what the true facts are,” board Chairwoman Erin Birt said. It seems that “true facts” about the college are emerging on an almost daily basis, and the public doesn’t seem to be having any trouble understanding them: • Carla Burkhart, a member of the College of DuPage Foundation Board of Directors, has received more than $630,000 in no-bid contracts. Her graphic design firm, Herricane Graphics, was given contracts in 2012 and 2014 for designing signage worth a total

a private server in her home when she was secretary of state. This was in violation of a 2002 federal law that directed all government-related email on government servers. Later, many of her emails were subpoenaed. She alone decided which emails to give up and which to keep. Hundreds of subpoenaed emails were never given up. Recently, it was revealed her private server has been totally erased. If she can get away with the destruction of subpoenaed material, which according to TV personality Judge Andrew Napolitano, is called obstruction of justice, then she shouldn’t be president – she should be queen of the USA. A monarch does not have to follow laws or a silly constitution. She is well qualified to be our queen.
“Matt Gambs is the expert we need on the Board of Trustees for the College of DuPage and that’s why I’m voting for him this April 7th. It’s time to elect a private-sector leader, with board room experience, to bring back control of the management process and bring resolution to the existing issues that exist at COD. Let’s protect the future of the College of DuPage. Put the people back in charge by electing Matt Gambs to the College of DuPage.”

Machine-style politics in DuPage personal and government related, on What’s going on with the DuPage County Republican organization with the consolidation election upon us? DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin and Regional Superintendent Darlene Ruscitti have been appointed to the governor task force on consolidation. The big question is will they have the stomach to end the high spending synonymous with Illinois government? It should be noted the April 7 election is designated nonpartisan. Then why has the Republican leadership endorsed certain Republican candidates. Why are they going to throw their full financial support of the party behind these candidates and exclude those Republican candidates not so anointed. It appears DuPage has [it’s] own style of machine-style politics. … Using machine-style politics in a so-called nonpartisan election could backfire.

One would hope it is not necessary to remind voters that the two members of the [College of DuPage] Board of Trustees who voted in favor of the [Robert] Breuder buyout and who are running for re-election to the board have proven themselves to be unacceptable for board membership. With their votes they made it clear it was easier for them to soak the taxpayers who are not responsible for their mismanagement than to deal with the wrath of Mr. Breuder, had he been denied what he wanted. We also need to keep this in mind when the 2017 election rolls around should two more of these alleged public servants decide to run for re-election to the board.

Real Estate News Ronald McDonald House in Central DuPage County teams up with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group’s Wheaton Office Wheaton, IL – Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group’s Wheaton Office visited the Central DuPage County Ronald McDonald House to participate in their Meals from the Heart program. This is the second time Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group’s Wheaton office, in conjunction with the KoenigRubloff Cares Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports local initiatives, has prepared meals for residents and families staying at the Ronald McDonald House, visiting the house in both February and March of 2015.
The Meals from the Heart program was developed for families who stay at the Ronald McDonald House while their children are being treated at Central DuPage Hospital. Many of the residents live miles away from the hospital, and the Ronald McDonald House allows them to stay close to the hospital. Volunteers are able to come in on a particular date to prepare meals for the residents staying in the home. “I just want to say that the Meals from the Heart program is a fantastic program,” Vice President and Managing Broker, Ken Spengel of Berkshire Hathaway
KoenigRubloff Realty Group’s Wheaton office said. “When the idea was presented at an office meeting to see if anyone wanted to go to the house and prepare meals for the residents, the response was unanimous. We were able to have a great time cooking and laughing, then we sat down and shared a meal with the residents of the house. There aren’t enough words to describe what this program does for these people who are going through a difficult time. We will be doing it again in April. Then in June we will be grilling during the company wide week of kindness.”

Outlook: After a strong finish to the 2014 season that culminated with a regional championship, the West Chicago baseball team hopes to carry that momentum into this spring. “We have a good group of kids,” West Chicago coach Dan McCarthy said. “With the year we had last year, winning the regional, it gives the kids something to build on.” The Wildcats are blessed with some top-level talent, highlighted by Butler-bound Connor Dall, a third-year varsity shortstop who hit .376 as a junior. The pitching staff is led by UIC recruit Fred Gosbeth, who features an imposing fastball. “We’ve got some kids who have a bright future ahead of them,” McCarthy said. “But it will be the role players who didn’t play a lot last year who will determine how good we can be.” Fellow senior Peyton Seidler will be the No. 2 pitcher with senior Alex Cabral expected to fill the No. 3 role once

Outlook: Returning a large contingent of players from a group that nearly won 20 games a year ago, Wheaton Academy has every reason to be optimistic about its fortunes in 2015. Headlining the Warriors on the mound is senior Brett Albaugh, the staff ace from a year ago whose ERA was just a tad more than 2. The squad also brings back three of their top hitters in senior third baseman Luke Kram, senior outfielder Chris Johnson and senior DH Jake Lindstedt. “We have seven returning seniors and all of them contributed to last year’s team,” coach Brad Byrne said. “We’ve got a pretty strong pitching staff and offensively, we return our one through seven hitters so I’m pretty optimistic about us hitting the ball.” Byrne also is excited about a strong junior class that includes R.W. Rienow, David Thrasher, Christian Ebeling, Matt Perna, Ryan Anderson and Noah Ritchie. One big change for Wheaton Academy this spring is a new conference, as the Warriors move from the Suburban Christian to the Metro Suburban. “It is hard to leave the Suburban Christian, especially because the baseball side was so competitive,” Byrne said. “In the new conference, we’ve played Riverside-Brookfield and St. Edward but we don’t know a lot about the other teams.” Also of note is the Warriors are debuting their new turf field this spring. “We are excited about that,” Byrne said. “Its great for the kids and fundamentally it is great. You don’t have fear of the ball taking a bad hop.”

Outlook: After a very successful run under Rich Janor, who left St. Francis for Montini, the Spartans are now led by former professional baseball player Nick Hall. Hall inherits a team that won 22 games a year ago and returns a strong crop of players. That group is led by Central Michigan recruit Jason Sulliva, who batted .417 with 24 runs scored in 2014 while going 3-3 on the mound with a 2.01 ERA in 45 innings. Also back is junior outfielder Will Purdom, who hit .357 with 18 runs last spring and junior catcher Brett Whelton (.330, 12 RBIs), along with seniors Jake Radel and Nick Dama. Radel had an ERA of 1.80 in 20 innings of work while Michael O’Keefe went 3-2 in 26 innings on the hill. The team did
suffer a blow as No. 2 starter Ryan Hodgett recently underwent Tommy John surgery. “We are a very seasoned team with a lot of returning starters,” Hall said. “We will rely on our seniors and expect our younger players to follow their lead. Our goal is to play an aggressive brand of baseball, really work on our craft in all phases to hopefully gain a small edge over our opponents in one way or another. “With hard work, effort and enthusiasm those small edges in our favor will amount to us putting a high-quality brand of baseball on the field each and every game.” Defense, as well as offense, should be strengths. “Our team will rely heavily on our ability to make plays in the field,” Hall said. “I truly believe we will be one of the better defensive teams in the area, so if we throw strikes our fielders are going to make plays. “I also see our ability to swing the bat as a strength. We have several players who can drive the ball all over the yard.”

Outlook: Wheaton North has some holes to fill in its lineup after losing nearly every starter to graduation from a group that won 19 matches in 2014. But head coach John Noe is confident some new faces are
ready to step up for the Falcons. “The incoming senior and junior athletes have put a ton of time in during the offseason and are ready to fill in the shoes vacated by last year’s graduated seniors,” Noe said. “The team all knows each other very well and already has excellent chemistry. We expect to be a high-powered offense led by senior setter Ethan Peterson and backed up with an equally talented defense with three very talented [defensive specialists] who will compete for the libero job.” The squad finished fourth a year ago in the competitive DVC, which has only six teams in it this spring with the departure of Glenbard East and West Aurora to the Upstate Eight. “All six schools have a shot
at winning the DVC title this year,” Noe said. “I think each team has its strengths and each team has its weaknesses. Every night should be a battle to achieve a DVC victory. I expect the DVC title race to come all the way down to the wire in May.” Wheaton North opened the season with a 26-24, 25-21 loss to St. Francis on March 23. Peterson finished with 16 assists and Sam Bedrossian totaled six kills and five aces.
turning from a year ago, coach Kristi Hasty is hoping her West Chicago team can by competitive in the Upstate Eight River division this spring. “My goal is for the team to learn from every match and improve,” Hasti said. “We will have our hands full as we play a very competitive schedule.” That schedule includes invites at St. Charles East on April 11, Waukegan on May 9 and Vernon Hills on May 16.

Outlook: St. Francis was hit especially hard by graduation, losing 11 seniors from a group that advanced to the sectional. As a result, the Spartans are much younger and less experienced this spring with only two seniors on the roster. But the influx of new faces doesn’t necessarily mean it is going to be a down year for the program; St. Francis went 26-5 at the JV level in 2014. The Spartans do return senior libero Jon Messa. “The team chemistry and work ethic are already in midseasonform,”coachMikeLynch said. “How quickly our team makes the jump to the varsity level will determine our success this season. We are a well-balanced, quick, athletic team that is improving every day.”

Outlook: With a lineup that consists almost entirely of new faces, the Falcons will rely on their pitching staff to shoulder the load, especially in the early going. wide open,” Schoessling said. “It should be an exciting year for the conference.” Wheaton North opened the season with a 5-1 loss to Benet and a 3-2 defeat to Downers Grove North on March 28. Those two contests were part of a challenging schedule that the Falcons face on a yearly basis. “If the weather cooperates, hopefully we can get a fair amount of games in before conference,” Schoessling said. “That is very important for any team that doesn’t have a whole lot of experience coming back.” The Falcons bounced back with a 12-3 win against Lafayette on March 30 as part of their trip to Missouri. Jack Duggan was 3 for 5 with three runs scored, Erik Mueller had a triple and two RBIs, Michalak had a two-run homer and Ryan Muehlfelt and Szum both had two hits. Connor Morency pitched six innings to get the victory.

nine victories last spring. “If we can stay healthy on the mound, and I know everybody has that issue, we could be pretty good,” Wheaton North coach Dan Schoessling said. “If those guys can consistently give us good starts, we should be able to compete and have a chance to compete for the conference title.” The offense will be a work in progress as the team lost six players who had more than 100 plate appearances in 2014. Robin had 58 at-bats last year and Doug Michalak, Jason Szumski and Colangelo also saw time. “Certainly we have to figure some things out the first few weeks,” Schoessling said. “Offensively, we are hoping some guys will step up. We’ve got guys who have some speed and if we can get them on base, we can do some things.” The Falcons finished second in the DVC a year ago, and with many of the teams getting hit hard by graduation, the league appears up for grabs. “I would say it is pretty
