Child hunger ‘health crisis’ in DuPage prompts call to action By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com WINFIELD – Child hunger has reached the level of “public health crisis” in DuPage County, according to Loaves & Fishes Community Services. The issue motivated the nonprofit group to host a forum Friday at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield to raise awareness and get the community involved in providing solutions. One in every six children in DuPage County experiences food insecurity, according to Feeding America data. That rate has remained consistent the past several years. The U.S. Department of Agriculture defines food insecurity as “limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods or uncertain ability to acquire these foods.” Experts in nutrition, pediatrics, childhood education and preventative medicine gathered to discuss how child food insecurity is linked to other family hardships and adverse health outcomes. The event began with a presentation by Dr. John Cook, associate professor in the pediatrics department at Boston University School of Medicine. Cook highlighted his research that connects food insecurity in children with harmful growth problems, compromised immune systems and energy deficits. “Creating the right conditions for early childhood development is far more effective, and cost efficient, than addressing problems at a later age,” Cook said in a news release. “If we want to be prosperous, and I think everyone does, we need to make sure our children have

Roadblocks include lack of transportation to food outlets for low-income families, noncompliance with medical staff and a lack of education regarding healthy lifestyle choices. Improving healthy eating habits and better lifestyle choices starts with a family-oriented approach, said Linda Van Horn, clinical nutritionist and professor at Northwestern University. “It goes without saying that it is obviously the parents and adults that role model these behaviors for their children,” Van Horn said. “You can’t get junior to eat his broccoli if Dad is saying, ‘No, sorry, I don’t put that stuff in my mouth.’” Simply getting to food pantries or medical services can be a challenge for low-income families, an issue particularly prevalent in DuPage County, according to Dr. Jennifer McNulty, medical di-
rector for pediatric emergency medicine and pediatrics at Edward Hospital. McNulty summoned the community to find creative solutions to the transportation obstacle. “When you talk about the infrastructure parts, I think that’s a barrier in DuPage County because we’re a suburb. You can’t walk across the street.” she said. “It will be interesting to try to have people from this group as a whole from DuPage County, who know those specific challenges, to find solutions.” Talking to parents on a daily basis about healthy eating and exercise programs is crucial to early childhood development programs, according to Theresa Hawley, executive director of the Illinois Governor’s Office of Early Childhood Development. Hawley emphasized that if children are hungry when they attend early childhood programs, they won’t be able to engage in activities. She said food insecurity is an indicator of other things going on in a family and that recognizing the importance of outside factors will create a better experience for children. “If we only provide early childhood education – and we don’t look at housing security of the family, we don’t look at the long-term self-sufficiency of the family and we’re not looking at access to health care – we’re not going to have the impact on the child’s development that we want to have.”

Pineda warned if the reduction is approved, the City Council will have to close the gap through service cuts or find new revenue sources. The mayor finished his address by outlining how the city will achieve some of its future goals. Pineda said three future projects will focus on growth and development, the first being a housing study with two other communities, Hanover Park and Glendale Heights, which will eventually be used to establish a housing plan for the city. The second is an upcoming developer review panel to assess development opportunities for the city. Finally, the city will retain a consultant to assist in the creation of a strategic plan to govern decision making during the next three to five years.

WEST CHICAGO – Mayor Ruben Pineda delivered his State of the City address Monday, highlighting West Chicago’s accomplishments and goals to a packed City Hall. The mayor was particularly proud of health initiatives executed by the city in the past year. A high obesity rate among elementary school children and many families needing mental health services led the city to partner with local organizations to bring health and wellness services to residents, Pineda said in a video shown during the address highlighting various health initiatives that took place in the community throughout the year. “I’m doing my part tonight to increase the physical activity associated with the State of the City address,” he said before playing the video. “We’re getting healthy, West Chicago.” A community action plan for health was developed based on a resident survey last year. The plan helped West Chicago create a farmers market, an expanded community garden and the opportunity for residents to learn from partnering organizations about healthy cooking and snack alternatives, and ways to increase physical activity. As part of the plan, West Chicago collaborated with United Way of DuPage/West Cook, which provides resources to handle some of the challenges West Chicago faces, such as poverty and childhood obesity. Pineda also expressed excitement about partnering with WeGoTogether for

Officials prepare to push for development after rezoning “This type of project will help transform us while keeping our basic character.”
By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com WINFIELD – The village of Winfield is open for business. The Village Board conducted a final unanimous vote last month to zone properties at Winfield and Roosevelt roads for specific commercial use and are now in the process of making plans to reach out to developers. “This type of project will help transform us while keeping our basic character,” President Erik Spande said. By establishing a zoning with designations such as a minimum property size of 7 acres, officials hope to draw medium to large, high-end businesses with sales tax generating potential. The newly zoned area includes 18 properties on Roosevelt Road and three on Winfield Road at the northwest and southwest corners of the intersection – a total of about 24 acres, according to officials. Those properties, as well as adjacent unincorporated areas, have
Erik Spande Winfield village president the potential to generate $1.3 million to $2 million in revenue, according to village documents, and officials have said there is a possibility for the village to expand to unincorporated land via annexation. Previously, the now-commercial space was zoned residential. It is currently occupied primarily by homes and forest. In early 2013, the board attempted to zone multiple noncontiguous properties in the area more broadly as B1 commercial land, but the zoning was repealed that summer after residents sued the village regarding the matter, according to officials. Before the recent rezoning, the vil-
lage conducted surveys and town hall meetings as part of its comprehensive plan update, and officials said the community showed clear consensus with regard to Roosevelt Road. Moving forward, the village hopes to see mainly retail development on the land, with peripheral office and residential space. Although the village doesn’t own the recently zoned properties, it hopes to facilitate their development by working with Choose DuPage to invite developers to meet with Winfield officials and by hosting a tour of the area. Incoming trustees have expressed support for the village’s plans. “We want something substantial,”
said newly elected board member Robert Greer, who was a member of the plan commission during its involvement with the recent rezoning and suggested Trader Joe’s or Panera might be a good fit for the space. Greer said any development should have attractive architecture and mitigate sound and light pollution with buffers to protect residents of the area, a need the village is already anticipating, according to officials. Dennis Hogan, who will join the board after winning the local election earlier this month and who chaired the village’s comprehensive plan steering committee, agrees with the new zoning. “I don’t have any fixed vision,” he said of the area. “I’m looking for revenue and I’m looking for aesthetics.” Both current and newly elected board members also have expressed interest in pursuing development throughout the village moving forward, specifically in the town center near Central DuPage Hospital.

Q & A with the Hearing Doctor Ringing Ears Q: I have ringing in my ears. It started about six months ago and it is constant. I’m worried that it might be a sign of a medical problem. What causes this?
A: What you are experiencing is called “tinnitus”. In most cases, it is more of an Dr. Terri Lightbody irritant than a major (630) 580-5777 problem. However, if you experience tinnitus, you should have it evaluated to ind the cause. Tinnitus can be perceived as many diferent sounds such as humming, ringing, or buzzing and it may be constant or periodic, varying in loudness. here can be several causes of tinnitus. It can be caused by loud noises, related to medical disorders such as ear infections or Meniere’s disease, or may be caused by use of certain drugs. here is also a very high incidence of tinnitus with the presence of hearing loss (especially highfrequency hearing loss). his relationship can be related to the well-established principle that a peripheral disorder such
as a sensori-neural hearing loss (within the cochlea) produces an increase in brain activity. In other words, the brain makes a ‘sound’ trying to compensate for the lack of stimulation in the cochlea. Oten, negative emotion is attached to the tinnitus sound and increased attention is paid to it – making it diicult for a patient to cope. Tinnitus becomes more diicult to deal with when there is uncertainty or fear involved. A hearing evaluation is the irst step to inding out what may be causing your tinnitus. Once a medical evaluation has ruled any physiological causes of tinnitus, a tinnitus treatment plan is created to help you manage the negative side-efects of tinnitus. he good news is that today, patients usually have several options, when it comes to their tinnitus treatment plan. At times, getting help is as simple as following a relaxation plan and ‘sound generators’ in certain environments. Other patients need personal sound masking devices or even a specialized hearing aid to help habituate the tinnitus.

college intended to cooperate with law enforcement but also gave some stern advice. “I want to issue a warning to the administrators and any other individual at the college not to destroy any papers or transactions ... or any evidence of the potential of wrongdoing – that’s a criminal offense,” she said. Hamilton said she had reason to believe “something like that is going on” but declined to speak further. Chairwoman Erin Birt did not respond to a request for comment. A major focus of the investigation centers on the spending habits of President Robert Breuder, trustees and senior management. In November, it was revealed col-
lege officials expensed questionable items at on-campus restaurant Waterleaf, including meals for trustees and more than $1,000 in alcohol for a trustee Christmas party. The board also has been under fire for a $763,000 buyout awarded to Breuder earlier this year. The trustees were scheduled to meet April 16, but officials announced a cancellation, citing deference to the new members elected April 7. Samborn said there was “no connection between the receipt of the federal grand jury subpoenas and decisions not to hold the meeting.” The subpoena also delved into accusations that foundation board members inappropriately received preferential treatment for contracts
for work at the college. Particular controversy last month surrounded foundation board member Carla Burkhart, who got $630,000 in no-bid contracts for design work at the school through her firm Herricane Graphics. College and foundation officials have since defended the work, with foundation Executive Director Catherine Brod – who has announced she is stepping down in October – saying in a statement that foundation board members with contracts had been doing work for the school before serving on the board. A separate federal subpoena was issued April 13 for information about the college’s Suburban Law Enforcement Academy. The document asked for class records, instructor certificates, transcripts and communication between several top academy officials. The school is required to provide all records to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Lisle office or testify April 23 before a grand jury at the Dirksen Federal Building in Chicago for the first subpoena and April 30 for the second.

In an event signaling more trouble for the long-embattled College of DuPage, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has issued a subpoena to the school for documents pursuant to an official criminal investigation. The subpoena, dated April 13, revolves around financial records for senior staff and trustees, communications and contracts involving college foundation members as far back as Jan. 1, 2009. The legal action follows a similar investigation by the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office in recent months. “The College of DuPage and the College of DuPage Foundation are confident in the proper conduct of their affairs and will fully cooperate with any government investigation,” college spokesman Randall Samborn said. Board Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, who has been an outspoken critic of the current trustees and administration and is poised to become the next chairwoman, said the

WeGo initiative makes healthy decisions fun The city of West Chicago and its many community partners are getting ready to launch the Healthy West Chicago initiative, which has been in development for more than a year, May 16 at Blooming Fest. Blooming Fest, the city’s COMMUNITY signature spring garden and VOICE craft event, will take place Rosemary from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downMackey town West Chicago. The addition … of Healthy West Chicago this year seemed like a natural fit to organizers. Between the connection of good health to gardening, and because of the level of exposure Healthy West Chicago will receive at an established event – which draws a crowd in the thousands – pairing the two made perfect sense. It even sparked this year’s event theme, Blooming Fest – Growing a Healthy West Chicago. Look for Healthy West Chicago signs and balloons to learn … new ways to start making the healthy choice the easy choice in cooking healthy meals and increasing physical activity. Visitors also will learn about the soon-to-be released Healthy West Chicago Community Action Plan and how residents can be a part of making West Chicago the healthiest community in the region. The plan was developed through input from a survey conducted last summer. While the survey showed West Chicago residents believe healthy eating and increased exercise are extremely important (93 percent), only 28 percent said West Chicago is a “healthy” or “very healthy” place to live. Following the survey, 11 community forums were hosted for people who live or work in West Chicago. All the ideas … shared at the forums guided the development of the action plan, which was then presented to multiple technical experts who work to support healthy communities. They included Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children (Adam Becker), Active Transportation Alliance (Nancy Wagner), DuPage FORWARD (Ann Marchetti), DuPage County Health Department (Becky McFarland), DuPage County Division of Transportation (Dan Thomas), Northwestern Medicine/ Cadence Health (Patricia Coleman), Kane County Health Department (Jackie Forbes), Community Health Planning for the city of Blue Island (Gita Rampersad) and Seven Generations Ahead (Gary Cuneen and Jen Nelson). This experienced group of technical experts provided support and additional recommendations for the Healthy West Chicago action plan. OUR VIEW
SB 1 just another dose of the same bad medicine Some movie sequels we’re delighted to see in theaters, and some seem to have been conceived even though nobody wanted them. The arrival of Illinois Senate Bill 1 this year appears to fall into the latter camp. SB 1 is largely a tweaked version of the previous Legislature’s much-maligned Senate Bill 16, which generated a lot of headlines before meeting its end when it failed to come to a vote in the House. SB 16 would have restructured how funding was distributed around the state based on the neediness of the student populations in each district. Critics said the bill would unfairly take from wealthier districts without boosting overall education funding – DuPage County schools, for instance, were in line to lose $140 million in funding. SB 16’s death was lauded in many corners as a good first step toward real education funding reform. “This is a huge success for the suburban taxpayers who would have been fleeced by the provisions of SB 16,” State Rep. Ron Sandack, R-Downers Grove, said in December. That success appears to have been a fleeting one as SB 1 now rears its ugly head. Like its predecessor, the bill hits west suburban districts disproportionately, with massive reductions in funding. The Illinois State Board of Education has projected what it would do for each district in the state, based on 2014 numbers, and it’s not pretty. For instance: • Community School District 200 in Wheaton stands to lose $7.5 million from its $12 million in funding. • Glenbard Township District 87 would
have to give up $5.4 million of the $6.8 million it got in 2014. • Community High School District 99 in Downers Grove would give up more than $3 million from the $3.9 million it got in 2014. • West Chicago District 33, on the other hand, would get a $5.3 million boost on top of its $14.4 million in funding. • The city of Chicago schools would gain more than $267 million in funding, on top of the about $1.3 billion it got for 2014. (Just to be clear, no one would actually give up money they got in 2014; these numbers just apply the proposed formula to what was paid out that year.) “This approach to education funding [in SB 1] is a pure winners/losers scenario, which is not the way that I think we should approach education funding from the state perspective,” state Sen. Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, said during a recent visit to the Suburban Life newsroom. Gutting the finances of relatively healthy districts to try to prop up currently underfunded districts is a terrible solution. When the push for SB 16 was in full swing, many legislators and school officials told Suburban Life that some amount of reapportionment was fair but that the dollar amounts being considered were catastrophic to the areas that would lose money. They still are catastrophic under SB 1. It’s good that school funding formulas are under scrutiny because the current model is terrible, too. This conversation needs to continue. But this bill does more harm than good, and it should be scrapped.

‘School should never be used as a free baby-sitting service’ What a firestorm [that has resulted from my initial Sound Off], but I stand by my theory. To the parent making tough choices, if you are already struggling to achieve the American Dream, then adding children to the mix won’t be helping your situation. Next, one should never need two incomes to support a family. If you do, you do either need a better paying job or you are living above your means. To the reader that worries about someone dying or becoming disabled, that’s what insurance policies are for ... Whatever your situation, the school system should never be used as a free baby-sitting service.

School District 201, for voting down a much-needed referendum for a third time. Especially sad is the incorrect assumption made by those who promoted the mentality that the money would somehow pay teachers’ pensions rather than facility improvements and security upgrades. I guess you can’t quite figure out what is really important to provide a safe learning environment, which would ultimately enhance your property values. The district and board were diligent, and you were cowards.

Hillary Clinton, the new champion of the middle class. When she is president, we will all be able to ignore the law too, won’t we?

I just read that the village of La Grange Park is going to spend a lot of their funds to repair the roads near the Heatherdale subdivision. Those roads were beaten up by the heavy construction traffic for the better part of three years. I hope La Grange Park and [the] surrounding towns realize in the future, when a builder has a large remodeling project, I hope they are responsible for fixing all the roads that lead to and from these projects. Why should taxpayers have to pay for the damage?

Wheaton City Council needs to accept the fact that the downtown area and the [Downtown Wheaton Association] is a fraction of the city of Wheaton. As long as the Wheaton City Council keeps providing this supposed entity money, because of its inefficiency and monumental lack of self-reliance, it will never learn to budget and financially plan. Once the members of the DWA become solely invested, they may quickly learn and thrive in a way that would attract more shoppers and businesses.

He said the plan suggests connecting organizations with utilities for energy audits, connecting people to grants and fast-tracking LEED-certified building projects. He added that the council has a marketing plan, including online information and social media engagement to increase participation, saying that “it will only be successful if people know about it.” Cronin called the goals thoughtful, substantive and achievable but acknowledged much of the hard work influencing a change in behavior was ahead of the county. “We’re going to do everything we can to leverage our positions as county leaders partnering with The Conservation Foundation and the Sierra Club,” he said. “We really think we have an opportunity to get this message out and continually bang the drum about the virtues of it.”

County leaders came together April 14 to announce plans for a greener DuPage during the next decade and a half. In a news conference at the DuPage County Administrative Building, the DuPage Green Government Council announced a public awareness initiative aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions around the county by 10 percent by 2020 and 20 percent by 2030. County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said the Cool DuPage program, an offshoot of a Sierra Club’s nationwide county initiative, is a continuation of environmental work in the county. “For more than two decades, DuPage County government has implemented a series of policies that benefit the environment and provide savings for taxpayers,” he said. He pointed to the construction of a power plant for the county complex, the purchase of more than 30 alternative fuel vehicles, rooftop vegetation and solar panels and the replacement of old equipment with more energy efficient models as examples of the progress the county has made. Should the county reach its goals, it will be equivalent to taking more than 480,000 vehicles off the road each year, Cronin said. Jack Darin, director of the Illinois Chapter of the Sierra Club, said that local government involvement on air pollution problems is critical. “Our local government leaders – they’re focused every day on delivering basic services and results for their citizens,” he said. “And DuPage County has shown us by example with what they’ve done ... that energy efficiency pays off big time.” Cronin and fellow county board member and Environmental Committee Chairman Tony Michelassi said the effort could not only make a difference for the environment and public health, but also for businesses and private pocketbooks. Michelassi said that businesses with a 500,000-square-foot office building could save up to $120,000 annually at the 20-percent target through energy efficiency. Average annual savings for a participating household could be upwards of $360. Brook McDonald, president and CEO of The Conservation Foundation, said the plans had been in the works for several years and emphasized having real, attainable numbers and plans. McDonald said the diverse effort will require buy-in from all energy users, especially businesses – which use half of

We are driven. Single-minded. Forward focused. We believe in keeping your health moving forward as far down the road as humanly possible. In nudging, nurturing, supporting, preventing and running interference for you along the way. In doing things that have rarely been done before in hospitals. To not just try, but do. Danica Patrick
To turn upside down, right side up. And send it on its way. We believe this is one heck of a road trip we’re on. But one well worth the journey no matter where you are along it. Because this joy ride can lead us all to a healthier place. And if that’s not a good thing, well, then we don’t know what is. Edward, Elmhurst and Linden Oaks Hospitals are now EDWARD-ELMHURST HEALTHCARE. And we are Healthy Driven.

WHEATON – The location, decor and ambience have changed, but the service and food remain impeccable. Lu’s Sushi & Chinese, which closed its Glen Ellyn doors last summer after the owners lost their lease, opened a Wheaton location in the fall to much fanfare. While patrons of the old Lu’s will notice the restaurant’s email and phone number remain the same even after the move – something the owners kept intact to ensure they would not lose their faithful fan base – the new space provides appealing upgrades. First, the new Town Square Wheaton location offers a cozier experience compared to the former digs. There are about 15 tables in the main dining room, as well as an adjacent private area separated by a string curtain. Asian lanterns hang from the ceiling and the walls are adorned with green leaf prints, consistent with the all-natural theme, which also resonates in the restaurant’s many plants and the ornately carved vegetables turned into flower garnishes that add their visual pop to some main courses. For more culinary drama, the new Lu’s positioned the sushi bar and open kitchen next to the dining area so customers can watch as their Chinese and Japanese meals are prepared. The menu remains extensive, offering Chinese dishes including hand-pulled noodle soups, along with sushi, sashimi and traditional Japanese fare. Beer, wine and sake are part of the full bar’s selections. My date and I arrived about 5 p.m. on a Friday, narrowly beating the happy hour patrons – the restaurant soon became comfortably crowded, which I took as a sign the place has been well-received by both new and old clientele. We were seated immediately and promptly welcomed by our server. Those unfamiliar with Lu’s or Asian cuisine might be a little overwhelmed with the

Wheaton North working toward consistency Falcons baseball still struggling to close out games By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com WHEATON – The biggest struggle for Wheaton North on the diamond this spring has been playing a complete game. And that once again proved to be true Tuesday as the Falcons were a couple of big hits away from a possible different outcome in a 7-4 loss to Glenbard North. The home team had the bases loaded in both the fourth and seventh innings and two runners on in both the fifth and sixth and only came away with one run. In the fourth, Jason Szumski hit a sharp line drive that was snagged by the Panthers second baseman. “We haven’t put a complete game together,” Wheaton North coach Dan Schoessling said. “We played well Saturday [a win over Batavia] but we have yet to do it in conference. But we’ve got a ways to go and we showed some good signs. “We looked better at the plate, we just couldn’t get the big hit when we needed it. It was good to see us get base runners on. But it shows that when you are not winning, things don’t necessarily go your way. I felt like if we hit a ball a few feet here or there, it might have been a different game.” Connor Morency was strong in relief, allowing one run in 3 2/3 innings. Szumski finished with two hits and an RBI while Doug Michalak had a pair of doubles and a run batted in. Ryan Muehlfelt also went 2 for 4. “Losing is tough,” Schoessling said. “It is hard

For us, we have to be able to put together a good pitching performance with timely hitting. And defensively, that’s probably the biggest area we need to improve.” Wheaton North (4-11) opened the series against Glen-
bard North with an 11-1 loss in six innings Monday. Michalak drove in the lone run. “Glenbard North is a very good team,” the coach said. “With that lineup, they will score their share of runs.” Behind a combined five hits allowed from Jack Duggan and Erik Mueller, the

Wheaton Academy The Warriors continued their winning ways Monday, knocking off Glenbard South 5-0 behind a sparkling pitching outing by Jake Lindstedt. Lindstedt gave up three hits while striking out eight in seven innings and Chris Johnson and Noah Ritchie provided all the offense he would need by driving in two runs apiece. On April 17, Wheaton Academy reached the 10-victory plateau with a 13-4 decision against Westminster Christian. RW Rienow, Johnson, Luis Ramos and Christian Ebeling all had two hits, with Johnson and Ramos adding two RBIs apiece. Johnson also had a home run. A day earlier, the Warriors defeated Timothy Christian 7-3. Lindstedt and Johnson had two hits apiece and

Lindstedt and Luis Ramos both drove in two runs. Ebeling picked up the win on the mound, allowing one earned run in five innings while striking out five. Luke Kram came on in relief and yielded one hit during two frames. The squad fell 6-2 to Nazareth on April 15 despite two hits apiece from Ritchie and Bryce Sandberg, who also drove in both of the runs. Lindstedt allowed no hits in three innings of relief.

April 17 at Benedictine University. John Sturm drove in the winning run with a single after Justin Yackey was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Brandon Bouchez went 4 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI and Steve Gutowski was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. WHEATON – Wheaton North’s girls soccer team remains undaunted if no longer unbeaten. The Falcons had their seven-game unbeaten streak snapped April 16 when Plainfield North won 2-1 on penalty kicks in a PepsiCo Showdown quarterfinal match at Rexilius Field. The two undefeated teams treated fans to a well-played game through regulation and two overtimes before the No. 3 seed Tigers (7-0-2) won the shootout 5-4 after the sixth round of penalty kicks. “I think both teams played very, very well today,” Wheaton North senior forward Lexi Pelafas said. “It’s tough to lose in PKs, but we’re going to come right back. We’ll be stronger from this and take this as a positive note.” The unseeded Falcons (51-2) had plenty of positives to take from the loss. Pelafas, a four-year standout and Central Michigan signee, scored the only goal for Wheaton North when she put a 19-yard free kick around the defensive wall and inside the left post with 3.9 seconds left in the first half to tie the game at 1-1. Brooke Polonus had given Plainfield North the lead 15 minutes earlier on a 32-yard free kick, but aside from a header that hit the crossbar in the second half, the Tigers did not sniff another goal. The first eight shooters converted their penalty kicks, with Pelafas, Jaden Trometer, Margaret Hupp and Becca Kouwe succeeding for the Falcons. The fifth shooters both missed before Plainfield North goalie Emma Veselsky saved the next attempt and Erin Chynoweth converted to win it for the Tigers. The Falcons have a future star in freshman keeper Zoe Welsh, who got a hand on two of the penalties, including Chynoweth’s. “She should take that in as a positive because she’s been on every single one of those
PKs,” Hupp said. “She just needs to be a little quicker.” Welsh has been outstanding this season, allowing only five goals. She made an incredible stop on a breakaway with 90 seconds left against Wheaton Warrenville South on April 7 before Pelafas won the game on a penalty kick with 29 seconds left. “She’s definitely one of the best keepers that’s ever come through Wheaton North and she has a really bright future ahead of her,” Pelafas said. “She’ll keep doing positive things.” Pelafas said this is the strongest Wheaton North team she’s been on and it’s because the Falcons have a good mix of veterans and talented young players like Hupp, a sophomore forward, who have the right attitude. “We’ve been playing really well,” Hupp said. “We took it to heart that we lost, but we’re just going to keep going forward from this loss to be stronger and improve more.” The Falcons got back to their winning ways with a 3-1 decision against Crystal Lake South on April 18 and then defeated Naperville Central on April 20 behind a goal from Pelafas.
GIRLS SOCCER Wheaton Warrenville South The Tigers defeated Lincoln-Way West 3-1 as part of the Pepsi Showdown on April 16 and then knocked off Highland Park 4-0 on April 18.
Wheaton Academy The Warriors defeated Plainfield East 5-1 on April 16 as part of the Pepsi Showdown. Gretchen Pearson had two goals and an assist, Kate Lindsay found the back of the net twice and Erin Teevans added a goal and an assist. Goalies Liana Ledesma and Liz Fisher combined for five saves. The squad also beat Fenton 5-0 on April 17 and Marist 1-0 on April 18 before losing 1-0 to Benet on April 20.
WTL/WCP *
Behind a dominant pitching performance by Chris Simpson, the Wheaton Warrenville South baseball team upended Lake Park 6-2 on Monday. Simpson pitched all seven innings, allowing just three hits and striking out 13 while walking nobody. Offensively, the Tigers scored all the runs they would need in the first, scoring three, and then pushed across three more in the third. Eric Giltz and Justin Kelly were both 2 for 3 and Ben Flores added a double and two RBIs. Last week, Wheaton Warrenville South completed the three-game sweep of Wheaton North with a 3-2 win April 15. Jake Kyllonen tossed a complete game, striking out seven while allowing no earned runs. Kelly and Austin Polezoes both had RBIs while Spiro Pavlou scored a pair of runs. On April 18, the Tigers fell 3-0 to Waubonsie Valley. Joe Pilalis yielded two earned runs while striking out four in a complete-game effort on the mound.

Late magic leads to Falcons win SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Wheaton North softball team emerged with an 8-7 victory over Wheaton Warrenville South on Monday. The Tigers had sent the contest into extra innings with two runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by an RBI single from Ariana Caldaron, and then added another run in the eighth as Maddie Trost crossed the plate. But with two outs in their half of the frame, the Falcons responded, first with Lele Burau scoring the tying run before a Natalie Shirley single drove in the winning run. That made a winning pitcher out of Sarah Gorzak, who yielded five hits in a complete-game effort. Trost also went the distance for WWS, fanning 10. The Tigers had split a dou-
bleheader with Glenbard West on Saturday, winning the opener 7-5 before falling 7-6 in the second game. In the first game, WWS scored five runs in the opening inning and eventually led 7-0. Sydney Young was 3-for4 with two runs scored and Maya Keating, Caldaron and Molly Fay each had two hits. Michelle Bresingham drove in three runs. Trost worked a complete game inside the pitching circle, striking out 15 while allowing five hits. In the nightcap, the visitors trailed 7-1 after two frames before plating three runs in the third and two more in the fourth. The Tigers loaded the bases with nobody out in the seventh but couldn’t push the tying run across. Caldaron had two hits and an RBI and Catie Hohnstein and Trost each drove in two. Fay pitched four innings of
scoreless relief, allowing just one hit. WWS also knocked off Lyons Township 9-4 on April 16 behind an 11-hit attack. Trost hit a home run and Maddie Briggs was the winning pitcher. The Falcons dropped a doubleheader to Waubonsie Valley on April 18. In the second game, Kelly Thornton had two hits, a run scored. She also had the team’s only hit in the opener.
Wheaton Academy On April 16, Wheaton Academy fell 3-1 to St. Edward despite three hits from Madison Ebeling. Andi Pivaronas also struck out six in five innings of work. The Warriors posted a 6-0 shutout of Lisle behind the pitching of Pivaronas on April 15. She allowed six hits. Bridget Koehler had a double.

by Kendall Fletcher. Chicago’s Press continued her dominance after the interval. In the 50th minute, she set up a wide open Hemmings in the area, only to see the Colorado native’s low shot comfortably saved by a well-positioned Solo. Three minutes later, Red Stars captain Lori Chalupny released Press one-on-one with the Reign goalkeeper, who used all of her experience and class to defy her national teammate’s attempted fake-out and deny the opportunity. Seattle nearly punished the home side for the missed chances when Karina LeBlanc parried Kim Little’s 63rd-minute stinger wide of the frame for a stunning save. Ten minutes later, the spotlight was back on Reign shot-stopper Solo, who did an excellent job of tipping DiBernardo’s powerful drive around the post. Just when it seemed the Red Stars might have to settle for a draw in their home opener, Press produced a final piece of brilliance to send the home fans into ecstasy. The California native shocked the opposition backline by sprinting on to a bouncing ball and confidently slotting past Solo for the dramatic stoppage-time winner. The Chicago Red Stars hope to make it consecutive wins to start the season when they host superstar Alex Morgan and Portland Thorns FC on April 25. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by visiting www.chicagoredstars.com or by calling 773-698-6001.

Chicago, Illinois – Professional women’s soccer outfit Chicago Red Stars opened its National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season with a bang on Saturday night, defeating defending regular season champions Seattle Reign FC 3-2, courtesy of a dramatic stoppage-time winner by forward Christen Press. The U.S. Women’s National Team star had a standout performance in the victory, as she bagged two goals as well as the assist on teammate Jen Hoy’s first-half tally. After an uneventful opening half hour, Seattle were first to get on the board. U.S. international Megan Rapinoe swung in a corner kick from the right and saw the ball make its way past the outstretched frame of Chicago goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc and to the far post, where it was nodded home by Beverly Yanez. The home side pulled level mere moments later, as Vanessa DiBernardo’s delicate header found its way through to Press and the 26-year-old made it 1-1 with a clinical finish past Reign netminder Hope Solo. Energized by the equalizer, the Red Stars kept pushing and took the lead in the 32nd minute. Press got in behind the Seattle defense once more – this time on an exquisite long pass by defender Taryn Hemmings – and the striker’s low centering ball picked out Hoy at the doorstep for a simple tap-in. The lead was not to last, however, as another Rapinoe corner in the 39th minute saw the ball cleared back out to the midfielder, whose cross in from the right was converted via close-range header
