WEST CHICAGO – CenterPoint Properties has announced a build-to-suit distribution center for DS Containers will be added to the DuPage Business Center in West Chicago, according to a city news release. The 300,278-square-foot facility will be situated on 14.55 acres with the ability for future expansion. DS Containers manufactures two-piece polymer-coated steel aerosol cans. The distribution center will feature 20 exterior dock doors, one drive-in door, 27 trailer positions and 73 parking spaces.

WEST CHICAGO – West Chicago Elementary School District 33 and its Board of Education are refinancing a large portion of the Leman Middle School bond debt to take advantage of low interest rates, according to a district news release. In 2010, the district community voted via referendum to approve the sale of about $36.1 million in bonds to renovate and expand the middle school. Since then, interest rates have come down significantly, and district administration worked with financial adviser PMA to refinance a large portion of the bond debt without extending the term of the bonds. The refinancing, completed in February, will result in property tax savings to district residents of just more than $4.3 million in the next 17 years, or about $25 per year for a home worth $200,000.

WEST CHICAGO – Redfield with West Chicago ties will soon dominate the stage, as well as their fans’ iPods. The band is releasing its first album May 29 at Two Brothers Roundhouse in Aurora. Redfield, is made up of three performers originally from West Chicago and one from Addison, has a rock, country and blues sound, according to lead singer and guitarist Brian Allison. The album is titled “Back in the Middle,” and among its attributes, Allison touted the depth of the songs. “Our new album has a wide range of different songs, from rock ‘n’ roll to blues to almost a Civil War sound,” he said. “We write all the songs ourselves. Whenever I write a song ,I relate it back to my real life situations, making this album pretty personal.” There are 10 new songs on the album. The band started four years ago and includes Allison, Brad Sabathne on drums, Erin Sabathne on backup vocals and piano, and Joe Scola on bass. Allison and the Sabathnes are West Chicago natives. By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com In a marathon five-hour meeting that featured divided votes on almost every issue on what became a nearly 20-item agenda, the College of DuPage Board of Trustees tackled a wide range of topics May 21.
1. Board gives itself more power The board took measures to distance itself from the college president’s office, increase self-policing and up the amount of potential control it has over the school and its administration. Trustees approved a series of changes to board policies 6-1, with Erin Birt dissenting. Many centered on placing the president’s office below the board and include: • Specifying the president’s organization and management of the college be under board direction • Mandating a minimum annual performance evaluation for the president
• Requiring board approval for all procedures under the president’s oversight • Allowing board modification or revocation of those procedures • Removing the president from agenda preparation • Placing the board chairwoman in charge of maintaining closed-session recordings. The trustees also greenlighted the provision of board office space and the requirement of board approval for any trustee reimbursements exceeding $335 in any fiscal year and empowered its members to become a more influential part of the long-range planning process. “We are charged with policy here on this board,” Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton said. “Our job is to give a structure. And we pass on the implementation of that to the president and the president in turn creates policies with staff and faculty, and in the past, … the board has not been able to reach down and correct problems as readily as needed.”
2. Consent agenda axed Much of the meeting was spent talking about items that, according to the agenda, weren’t to have been discussed. After board Vice Chairwoman Deanne Mazzochi and Secretary Frank Napolitano voiced concerns about all but two topics on the eight-item consent agenda – which is intended for items considered routine by the board that do not require a separate vote or discussion – trustees chose to vote on each item individually. Mazzochi said after the meeting she objected to the level of detail presented for the items, calling specifically for public bidding information and program goals in each purchase proposal. She said she was surprised staff hadn’t been asked for the requested details before and there was a “learning curve” for staff to adjust to the new postelection board. “I would hope that the administration is going to be more detailed in the information they give not
just merely to the trustees but to the public … so that everybody has the ability to view this information in advance and can genuinely vet the decisions that the administration is making,” she said.
3. No long-range plan? While it wasn’t up for a vote, the agenda included an item about the college’s strategic long-range plan, aimed at creating goals and a policy direction for the school’s future. However, Hamilton urged her fellow trustees to consider not moving forward with a plan until after the school implemented other policy changes and went through a state policy and financial audit. “I believe it is not the time to adopt it,” she said. “I, for one, do not envision any further development of a plan until many open questions at COD are resolved. Our strategic plan for the time being has to be identify, repair and transform.”

Forest preserve district suspends sales of horses in DuPage County

In a May 5 board of commissioners meeting, several attendees called the sale of a pair of longtime Kline Creek Farm horses, Buddy, 27, and Annie, 25, into question. Many asked whether the duo had been sold to “kill buyers,” who buy horses at auctions like the one Annie and Buddy were taken to in March in Topeka, Ind., and send them to slaughterhouses. “We as a board have heard their concerns,” board President Joseph Cantore said during a May 19 meeting. The district has yet to confirm the location of the two horses, district Director of Communications Susan Olafson said May 20. Cantore said he placed a moratorium on the sale of horses without board approval and directed staff to create a more holistic policy on what the district does with aging and retired horses. The board also unanimously voted to extend the policy for horses at the Danada Equestrian Center requiring anyone interested in adopting a horse go through an application procedure to apply districtwide. Robert Lahey, the district’s director of community services and education, said during the May 19 meeting the district hoped to have a policy proposal for horse retirement in the next 100 days or so. Commissioner Linda Painter said she appreciated the public comment that brought the issue to the board’s attention. “I think this is a good example that we do listen to what the concerns are of the public,” she said.

Now’s the time to revel in nice weather, great events In the depths of January’s icy freeze, no doubt many of us wondered why anyone would choose to live in such a frozen wasteland. In February and March, the mercury slowly climbed, but still our teeth chattered and our ice scrapers were required most mornings. Even April brought its share of unexpectedly cool weather. None of that matters now. Short-sleeve weather is here, and now we remember why we wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. As this year’s Memorial Day parades and cookouts recede from view, many of us are taking stock of what to do with the rest of the nice weather stretching out ahead. Maybe a trip to somewhere interesting, a visit to distant family or even a jaunt to a foreign nation. There’s an abundance of options. While you’re making out your list, don’t forget to factor in all the great local festivals and events right in our area. For instance, in the coming months you can look forward to: • Taste of Wheaton from June 4 to 7 • The Hinsdale Fine Arts Festival on June 13 and 14 • Rotary Grove Fest in Downers Grove from June 25 to 28 • FitzGerald’s American Music Festival from July 3 to 6 in Berwyn

Supportive housing is a sound investment Gov. [Bruce] Rauner’s proposed 2016 budget severely cuts or eliminates many of the state-funded programs that save money for the state. Unfortunately, it appears these painful cuts have been proposed without full consideration of the consequences the cuts would ultimately mean for taxpayers. The cut to supportive housing, for instance, is a prime example of how cutting current costs will actually cost Illinoisans much more in the long run. Supportive housing is affordable housing coupled with support services. This is a proven way to end chronic homelessness and unnecessary institutionalization for individuals and families who have been homeless and/ or who have special needs. The governor’s budget would eliminate all funding for supportive housing services

COMMUNITY VOICE Jane Doyle for homeless Illinoisans and drastically reduce services for mentally ill individuals housed in supportive housing. More than 10,300 people living in every corner of the state would be impacted by the proposed budget. This cut puts each and every man, woman and child currently in supportive housing in danger of returning to homelessness or institutionalization. Supportive housing is not dependent on state financing for all of its resources. Rather, it is the result of mixed financing and public-private partnership. The state funds are actually a fraction of the total cost of providing supportive housing. In fact, funding for supportive
housing comes from a federal investment of approximately $3 for every $1 in state funds provided. The state funds are actually used as “matching funds,” as required by
[Department of Housing and Urban Development] in order to receive the federal grants. So, the state provides only the funds to pay for necessary human services attached to supportive housing, which allows residents to maintain their stability and health. The elimination of supportive services will create a catastrophic domino effect of lost funding. Without the state’s supportive housing funds, the federal money that is matched at a 3-1 ratio will be lost. These federal investments provide desperately needed rental support to individual households and makes housing affordable to so many. Further, the federal investments allow nonprofit, mission-based landlords to provide and maintain affordable housing for those who would otherwise be homeless or institutionalized. If the governor’s budget goes through
as currently written, thousands of displaced individuals, families and children will be driven into far costlier institutions such as state-funded nursing homes, mental institutions, jails and back on the streets. As those who work with this population know, people living in the streets (or in their cars) are forced to use emergency rooms for care that could be provided in far more cost-effective settings. We ask Gov. Rauner to make good business decisions for Illinois; continuing the wise investment in programs which keep our citizens in safe, affordable housing while also saving money for the state and bringing new investment to our communities is the best decision the governor can make.

Richard L. “Dick/Chris” Christian, a longtime resident of Glen Ellyn, passed away at age 91. 'The beloved husband of the late Alice nee: Borowski; loving father of Lawrence (Nancy) and Janet (Ken) Parish; dear grandfather of Benjamin, Ali and Ashley Parish; devoted son of the late Clarence and Bertha; fond brother of the late Lorraine (late Robert) Happle and late Raymond (late Regina) and cherished uncle of many nieces and nephews. Howard “Bud” Gaffney, “Handsome Grandpa”, of Glen Ellyn, formerly of Wilmington, NC, passed away Sunday, May 17, surrounded by family. He was born in Glen Ridge New Jersey October 13, 1927. After high school he spent two years in the Navy. He then attended The Newark College of Engineering and received a BS in Chemical Engineering. He worked for American Cyanamid for thirtyfive years. He was very community minded. He was a Junior Achievement mentor. He was President of the Red Cross, Kiwanis, and United Way. He was very proud being a Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus, and more so when the family was chosen Family of the Year. He taught his children the importance of giving back. Bud was the biggest jokester. He could be counted on always for a laugh. He is survived by his loving wife, Betty “Honey”; his four children, Leslie (Ed) O'Connor, Mark, Todd (Treacy), and Cristy. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, whom he adored. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Ruth; his sisters, Jean, Betty and Joan. The family would like to thank CNS Hospice and the employees at Brookdale Glen Ellyn, especially his best buddies Nancy, Rocio and Angie. She was born to Alfonso Marillie Mallarol and Martha Schweinsberg Queller on December 15, 1930. Marta grew up in Santiago Chile where she met her loving husband of 61 years, Jose M. Luengo. She was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed life, her friends and always helping others. She was well loved and regarded by all who met her. The motion passed 4-3, with Birt, Mazzochi and Napolitano against, the latter two citing spending as a concern.

orget the adage “Youth is wasted on the young”; today’s single, female baby boomers are happy, confident and healthy. Seventy-six percent of single women over 55 feel younger than their age, according a survey by retirement community homebuilder Del Webb. Seventy-four percent of respondents said they’re as happy, or happier, than they were at age 35, and nearly half (45 percent) believe their best years are yet to come. In fact, more than one in five (22 percent) say they feel more attractive than they did at 35. Highest obesity rates Recent data from the Trust for America’s Health showed that the baby boom generationis the most obese of any age group. According to the study, in 17 states more than 35 percent of boomers are obese, and in 41 states, more than 30 percent of boomers are obese. “While baby boomers are living longer these days, they may be living sicker,” said national health expert Dr. Lori Shemek. “Boomers’ attention to looks bypassed their attention to their weight’ leading to a generation that is living longer, but sicker.”
Eat more greens Something as easy as adding more greens to your diet could help slow cognitive decline and improve memory, according to new research. “With baby boomers approaching old age, there is huge public demand for lifestyle behaviors that can ward off loss of memory and other cognitive abilities with age,” said Martha Clare Morris, assistant provost for community research at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. “Our study provides evidence that eating green leafy vegetables and other foods rich in vitamin K, lutein and beta-carotene can help to keep the brain healthy to preserve functioning.” Reasons to not retire Baby boomers are changing retirement, according to a recent study by the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies. Sixty-five percent of boomers plan to work past age 65 or do not plan to retire. Slightly more than half (52 percent) plan to continue working after they retire. Given widespread savings shortfalls, it is not surprising that 62 percent of the boomers surveyed who plan to work in retirement and/or past age 65 indicate that their main reason is income or health benefits. What is surprising is that 34 percent plan to work for enjoyment, including 18 percent who want to stay involved and 16 percent who enjoy what they do.

Dr. Kelenyi describes peripheral neuropathy as damage to the nerves, which transmits information from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. “This can result in pain, loss of feeling, and inability to control muscles, such as difficulty with walking. As with any other condition, there is no “one size fits all” remedy for those suffering from neuropathies and treatment may vary depending on the cause and severity.” However, many individuals can and do find relief using natural remedies. There are a few primary types of neuropathies: Large or small diameter or both as well as motor. Red Stars Roll on in 2-1 Away Win over Defending Champs Chicago, Illinois – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars remained undefeated against defending champions FC Kansas City on Saturday, bagging a 2-1 away win in the highly-anticipated blockbuster clash of the weekend. Sofia Huerta scored in her third consecutive match and defender Taryn Hemmings had the late game-winner for the visitors in meeting that had been delayed due to inclement weather and was played in pouring rain that didn’t let up at any point during the 90 minutes. Chicago nearly conceded a goal in the 7th minute, as shot-stopper Michele Dalton breathed a sigh of relief after being pressured by Sarah Hagen and attempting a clearance that bounced off the FCKC forward and rolled just wide of the right post. The Red Stars created their first quality chance in the 32nd minute. With a defender wrestling her for the ball, Arin Gilliland managed to sprint to the by-line and send in a low cross that was touched on frame by Jen Hoy and parried wide by goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart. Chicago would get on the board mere moments later, Vanessa DiBernardo swinging in a corner kick from the right that would see the 23-yearold earn her league-leading fourth assist. Early score helps Warriors win in sectional semi By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com WHEATON – Starting fast is something Wheaton Academy’s girls soccer team has focused on all season and it showed in the sectional semifinal. The Warriors scored 67 seconds into the match May 26 and coasted the rest of the way to a 1-0 win against Riverside Brookfield. Next up for the Warriors is a meeting with host St. Francis in the sectional final. Erin Teevans broke free down the left wing and got to the end line. She pulled RB goalkeeper Karli Riviera off her line and hit the ball back across

the goal to Gretchen Pearson. Pearson easily scored into the open net. “I was going pretty far to the end line, so I knew I had to play it back because it was a rough angle,” said Teevans, a freshman. “I think [the goal] just built our confidence up for the whole game, so we were on a strong note.” The Warriors (19-3-1) only started one senior, but showed the composure of a more experienced team to see out the victory. The Bulldogs (13-7-1) only managed to get two shots on goal the whole match, giving goalkeeper Liana Ledesma a fairly comfortable shutout, her 15th of the season.

Coach Dave Underwood said Wheaton Academy’s focus was to limit RB standouts Ashley Ferguson and Allie Kucera, and they did so. “Our defense has been really, really good this year,” Pearson said. “Our center back [Molly Thorson] just got injured so she’s out for the rest of the season, but we’ve done a really nice job of adjusting.” The second goal never came for Wheaton Academy, but the Warriors forced Riviera into seven saves. “We didn’t play our best so we’re going to hope to come out much stronger in the next game, but we came out with a win,” Pearson said.

The sectional final, which will take place at 6 p.m. May 29, will be a rematch of an April 27 match. Wheaton Academy, the top sectional seed, won 2-0 on that day. St. Francis, the No. 3 seed, enters with a 10-3-1 record and is coming off a 3-0 win against Nazareth. Freshman Kendra Pasquale scored twice and junior Kate LaMantia also scored for the Spartans. “Now we know how they play,” LaMantia said. “I think what Wheaton Academy does best is they have a good midfield. I think our midfield is equal to there’s and I think that we just have to step up for our next game.”

A 2015 season that included a Metro Suburban West conference championship came to an end for Wheaton Academy on May 25 in a 9-8 loss to Kaneland. The setback in the Class 3A Hampshire regional quarterfinal left the Warriors with a final record of 28-7. The squad allowed four hits in the game but were hurt by four errors. Wheaton Academy trailed 9-3 after four innings before plating five runs during the final three frames but left the bases loaded in the seventh. Brett Albaugh, RW Rienow, Jake Lindstedt, Noah Ritchie and Luke Kram all had two hits apiece. Kram drove in three runs while Albaugh had two RBIs on a double in the seventh. Kram also tossed two innings of scoreless relief. “I thought we would pull it out – we’ve battled back all year,” Warriors coach Brad Byrne said. “Being down 9-3, a lot of teams would’ve died. “We threw the ball around a little bit and that might have cost us the game. That’s not who we are. We had a good season in the field and we just didn’t make some plays.”
SOFTBALL Wheaton Academy Wheaton Academy ended the regular season with a .500 record of 13-13 after knocking off Lane Tech 13-3 May 23. Meghan Gagliano and Bridget Kohler both went 3 for 4, with Gagliano adding four RBIs and Kohler scoring three runs. Madison Ebeling had two hits and three RBIs and Julia Palmer was 2 for 2 with three RBIs. Andi Pivaronas pitched a complete game, striking out three while allowing four hits. A day before that, the squad defeated Addison Trail 11-1 as the top three hitters in the lineup – Ebeling, Gagliano and Jessica Bosse – combined for seven hits, six RBIs and six runs scored. Courtney Kinnane threw all seven frames, striking out four.

Receiving goals from four different players, to go along with a splendid defensive effort, the squad added a Class 3A regional title to go with their Du-Page Valley Conference championship. “It was every single player,” said Lexi Pelafas, the leading goal scorer for the season who made the score 3-0 in the second half with a breakaway goal. “Everybody was all-in together. We didn’t come in nervous, we were playing like it was a regular game. That was the difference and we’ve improved so much since we played them [a 2-1 Falcons win in early April].” Hannah Atkinson opened the scoring nearly halfway through the first half before Margaret Hupp converted a rebound that bounced off the crossbar to make the score 2-0 with 10 minutes left before intermission. After Pelafas found the back of the net 10 minutes into the second half, Maggie Liechty closed out the scoring with a shot from 25 yards out. “One of the things we started tracking [earlier in the season] was winning balls in the air and winning 50-50 balls,” Wheaton North coach Tim McEvilly said. “From the opening whistle, we did a great

Village of Glen Ellyn DuPage County, Illinois Hill Avenue over East Branch DuPage River Section No.: 10-00154-00-BR On January 29 2015, the Illinois Department of Transportation (DOT), Bureau of Local Roads and Streets approved the design for the Hill Avenue Bridge over the East Branch DuPage River improvements as presented in the Project Development Report prepared by Bollinger, Lach & Associates. This project consists of the removal of the old two span bridge which was originally constructed in 1956 and the construction of a new three span bridge at the same location due to the existing structure being considered structurally deficient. The proposed structure will provide for 12’ lanes in each direction with a 3’ shoulder on both sides of the bridge. The profile of the bridge will be raised approximately 2.5’ at the bridge to avoid adverse hydraulic impacts to surrounding properties. The Hill Avenue bridge will be closed during construction and traffic detoured for the duration of the project, which is anticipated to begin in 2016 with traffic tentatively detoured along Crescent Boulevard. The Project Development Report and other documents pertinent to the design of the project are available for inspection, review, and copying (at requestor’s expense) at the Village of Lombard.
