DISTRICT 200

Community Unit School District 200 residents may soon get a new platform to share their thoughts and hear from district officials on major issues. The district’s Board of Education continued to discuss creating a Citizens Advisory Committee on July 8. The committee would be designed to “improve the education of the children, youth and adults of the District by advising the Board of Education regarding educational and other issues facing the District,” according to a draft of its charter and bylaws. District Director of Public Relations Erica Loiacono said the committee is part of a broader engagement plan to foster conversations between the district and community members. “Those ongoing, two-way communications are not always easy to come by unless you create some type of structured environment for that to happen,” she said. “This community advisory

Proposed budget balanced, despite Springfield insecurity, capital needs By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Community Unit School District 200 has posted a proposed balanced budget, despite financial indecision in Springfield. The Board of Education unanimously agreed to post the tentative 2015-16 budget with a scant $55,000 operating fund surplus during its July 8 meeting. The budget includes about $160 million in operating funds, a 1.6-percent increase over 2014-15, and relies mainly on $134 million in local revenue, according to district documents. Its major expenditure is $123.8 million in salaries and benefits, which includes a 1.15 percent increase for the local teachers’ union, whose contract was ratified earlier this year. Assistant Superintendent of Business Operations Bill Farley said there were no major program reductions in the budget, though special education tuition, technology, health care benefits and a fiscally shaky state continue to be costly. In the final budget numbers for 201415, Farley said both expenditures and revenue came in several million under projections, but that the state owes the district $2.5 million in payments,

Several board members lamented the lack of major investment in capital projects for 2015-16. The district is in the midst of $1.3 million in summer work at five schools. It is in the process of formulating plans to address more than $50 million in high-priority facility improvements over the next three years, which requires about $10 million in 2016, $10.1 million in 2017 and $31.1 million in 2018. Board member Joann Coghill said the district has been talking about the work for years without action. “That issue has been identified, that need is not going to go away – it’s just going to get more expensive,” Vice President Brad Paulsen said.

WEST CHICAGO – Railroad Days may have been downsized for 2015, but there was still big fun to be had at the festival’s annual parade July 12. Because of space limitations, the majority of Railroad Days’ traditional

events were canceled, with the exception of the parade and the fireworks, which were held July 11. Nevertheless, the parade marched on, with 60 units, including bands, military veterans, color guards, youth groups and nonprofits. The theme for the parade was “For the Health of It.”

WAYS camps focus on childhood obesity prevention By PAIGE LISTON pliston@shawmedia.com WEST CHICAGO – Childhood obesity has more than doubled in the past 30 years, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, but Wayne/Winfield Area Youth/Family Services in West Chicago is working to change that through its expanded youth summer camps that promote active lifestyles and healthy eating habits. In June, WAYS received a $2,500 grant from the 2015 Spring Community Needs Grant Cycle of the DuPage Foundation. The grant is awarded annually to local organizations that offer obesity prevention programs for elementary and middle school-aged youth, according to a WAYS news release. With financial support from the grant, WAYS has been able to expand its summer camps, which teach children between the ages of 6 and 13 about proper nutrition and the importance of physical exercise, as well as provide more funds for supplies and activities, according to Allison Kowieski, youth program coordinator and family counselor for WAYS. “With the money from the grant, we were able to add an additional staff

POLICE REPORTS

Q & A with the Hearing Doctor Earbuds Falling Out?

Q: Every time I try to wear the earbuds

that came with my cell phone and iPod, they keep falling out of my ears and hurt. Why is this?

A: Everyone’s ear canals are different in respect to size, shape, curvature, and length. One size really doesn’t fit all.

Dr. Terri Lightbody (630) 580-5777

The outer ear canal is at times shaped like the letter “s”. As you enter the ear opening, the canal quickly starts to bend towards the back of the head and slightly upward. Some ear canals have a sharp bend (close to a 90 degree angle) while others have a smaller bend (45 degree). The challenge to fitting a straight earbud into a curved ear canal is getting the earbud to stay in position. Placing a straight earbud into a curvy canal is like putting a round block into a square hole. Without getting the earbud to lock inside the ear canal, it is near impossible to keep the earbud in the ear. Plus, to enjoy the superior sound isolation and sound quality of your earphone, it is very important to get a proper fit. We have many patients who come into our office with this same problem. They

are searching for a solution to their poor fitting earplugs/earbuds. They may need a better fitting ear piece for their job or for leisure activities. At this appointment, a thorough examination of the person’s ears and ear canals is completed to look for abnormalities and the shape and size of the ear anatomy. A silicone impression material is then put safely into the ear canal to take an accurate impression of the ears. This takes about 10 minutes. The ear impression is then sent into an ear mold lab to create the custom ear piece.

Battery

Custom fit ear molds account for the curve of the ear canal and allow the earbud to be locked into the ear. Custom ear buds are more comfortable and can be worn for longer periods of time and ensure optimal sound listening.

Important steps to avoid contracting West Nile virus It seems the buzz surrounding the West Nile virus in Illinois quiets more every summer. That’s not a reason, however, to not take precautions to reduce your risk to exposure. The DuPage County Health Department, according to its website, has made four positive tests of mosquitoes infected with the West Nile virus so far this year, and Cook County has discovered 15 positive pools this year. The Will County Health Department last week in Bolingbrook collected its first batch of mosquitoes that tested positive for the virus. In 2014, there were 44 human cases of West Nile in Illinois, according to the Illinois Department of Health. There were three deaths, including one in DuPage County. Those figures are down from the 117 human cases and 11 deaths in 2013 and 290 human cases and 12 deaths in 2012. Human cases started to spike after only five were reported in 2009. In 2010, there were 61 human cases of West Nile virus, including four deaths. There were 34 human cases and three deaths in 2011. West Nile virus is most commonly spread by infected mosquitoes. It can cause fever, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord). There are steps you can take to protect yourself from being bitten by a West Nile-infected mosquito. Follow these tips from the health department: • Wear shoes, socks, long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors for long periods of time or when mosquitoes are most active – usually dawn and dusk. • When possible, avoid the outdoors during peak biting times – dawn and dusk. • Spray clothing with insect repellent. • Apply insect repellent sparingly to exposed skin by following label directions. Some experts recommend lower concentra-

tions for children. Check with your doctor before applying insect repellent on infants, and wash your hands after using insect repellent. • Look for EPA-labeled products containing DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535. It also is important to eliminate mosquito breeding sites from around your residence. Mosquito eggs can develop in any standing water that lasts more than five to seven days. Follow these health department tips: • Turn over children’s wading pools and toys when not in use. • Drill holes in the bottom of recycling and trash containers that are left outdoors. • Change water in birdbaths twice a week. • Fix leaky faucets. They provide water where mosquitoes can breed. • Drill holes in window boxes and flower planters to prevent water from pooling. • Aerate ornamental ponds or stock with mosquito-eating fish. • Keep pools clean and chlorinated. • Eliminate standing water in your property. Take proper precautions this summer to reduce your exposure to the West Nile virus.

When traveling at a slower speed than vehicular traffic, bicyclists must ride as close to the right-hand edge as is safe and practicable. … Safe and practicable will be determined by a cyclist, not by a motorist who feels it is irksome to be courteous and safe. The League of American Bicyclists suggests that when the lane is of insufficient width for a motor vehicle and bicyclist (less than 14 feet) then the bicyclist should take the full lane.

Give bicycles some room

Right on, Rauner

So far, I’m proud of Gov. [Bruce] Rauner for actually keeping his promise standing up to the insiders and power brokers to help turn Illinois around. Given the long history of candidates claiming they would do this only to become elected incumbents perpetuating the awful crony game, it is encouraging to see someone with enough guts to do what is right even though the process is painful and despite a nonstop barrage from the mainstream.

Pfleger pfull of it

Michael Pfleger wants to close all these gun shops in Lyons and a couple in Chicago. Does he really believe by closing these places down there will be no more killings? I don’t think so. People are going to get guns legally or illegally. … Closing those gun shops is not gonna stop people from getting guns one way or the other.

To the gentleman who works for the chemical company spraying toxic weed killer: Do you really believe having a license makes your product safe? There are more than 80,000 legal chemicals of which thousands are known to be harmful, not to mention cigarettes which are 100 percent legal and require a license to be sold. People, do your own research before you have your lawns sprayed or fertilized with weed killer. Please Google search the recent findings on Roundup. Don’t tread on Trump

The recent intentional mis-characterization of candidate Trump as an anti-Hispanic bigot is disgusting. The man was commenting on a class of law-breakers popularly known as illegal aliens and was specifically focusing on a group of those who commit felonies, both on the way to their lawless border crossings and then afterward. To deny the existence of the Mexican drug cartels shipping tons of illegal drugs into the USA is to put one’s head in the sand and deny such smuggling has been going on for decades. Get real.

How about the county pave that extra three feet or so of gravel on the side of the road and make it a bicycle path? More and more people are becoming active these days. It would be nice that our state and local areas would support us in staying safe while we do that. Construction on roads is going on all the time. Is it so hard to extend that road where able?

GAME REPORT CHICAGO RED STARS AT HOUSTON DASH SUN. JULY 12

RED STARS: 2

Red Stars Reclaim First Place with 2-1 Road Win at Houston Houston, TX. – The Chicago Red Stars earned yet another away win on Sunday night and reclaimed the top spot in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) standings, defeating hosts Houston Dash 2-1 behind goals by Vanessa DiBernardo before the break and Jen Hoy after the break. Houston’s Tiffany McCarty temporarily leveled the score early in the second period. While the Red Stars had several half-chances in the opening stages of the match, the Dash nearly took the lead at the other end, as Ohai’s low centering ball from the right found a wide open McCarty and the attacker’s mishit shot made for a comfortable save by goalkeeper Michele Dalton. Houston had another close look just after the quarter-hour mark, Rachael Axon creating havoc with a cross from the left and Jessica McDonald failing to make contact with the ball at the doorstep. Chicago would grab the lead in the 19th minute. Alyssa Mautz’s excellent service from the right picked out Vanessa DiBernardo in the center of the area and the midfielder found the net with a clinical finish. The visitors could have doubled their advantage seven minutes later, Arin Gilliland’s outstanding work on the left begging for the centering pass to be tapped home from close range, only for the well-positioned Mautz to go down under a Camila challenge that was judged to have been fair by referee Chris Spivey. The Dash nearly punished their opponents for the missed opportunity late in the half, as Melissa Henderson came close to reaching Ella Masar’s low cross from the right before a deflection on the subsequent redirect by McDonald’s made for a comfortable save by goalkeeper Michele Dalton. Well inside first-half stoppage time, Sofia Huerta had a chance to add a second for the Red Stars on a one-on-one with McLeod, but she failed to take

advantage of Jen Hoy’s through ball by firing wide of the frame. After the interval, Chicago picked up right where it had left off, the ball falling right into the pass of Mautz, whose effort from 23 yards out sent it skimming off the bar. However, it would be the Dash finding the net three minutes from the hour mark, as Dalton was unable to get her fists on an Ohai cross from the right and McCarty nodded into the empty goal from the far post. Chicago outside back Gilliland continued to be a nuisance to the Houston defense, again pushing up the left in the 60th minute and making her way to the byline before picking out Huerta at the near post. The rookie forward did well to turn and release a powerful right-footed shot that whizzed just past the upright. Strike partner Hoy would aim perfectly moments later, as she received the ball at the top of the box courtesy of a Rachel Quon header and opted for a wicked half-volley that left McLeod without a chance on its way inside the right post. Down 2-1, the Dash attempted to create quality chances during the remainder of the game, but instead it was the road team that came close to scoring again when Gilliland’s long-range rocket twelve minutes from full time whistled inches wide of the left upright. It would be the day’s final noteworthy action, as the Red Stars put on a clinic in managing a late lead and held on for all three points. The NWSL leaders will honor all eight of their World Cup participants, including their U.S. quartet, ahead of the official “Welcome Home Game” against Boston Breakers on July 18, which will also serve as the club’s 2015 Pride Night. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by calling 773-698-6001 or by visiting www. chicagoredstars.com.

DuPage County Fair ready for opening day Organizers receive permits after fixing city code violations By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com WHEATON – The DuPage County Fair’s organizers have long said the fairgrounds would be ready by summer, despite more than 600 building code violations – a prediction that came true this week. DuPage County Fair Association Manager Jim McGuire confirmed the fair received the needed permits from the city of Wheaton and will move forward as scheduled for its 61st year July 22 to 26. “We’re having a fair and we accomplished the list that was put in front of us,” he said. “And to be honest with you, we never lost a day of operations here on the fairgrounds.” McGuire said the association successfully completed most of the work city inspectors mandated after an inspection in January 2015. He said the bottom half of the fair’s grandstand will be open, with bleachers to make up for the loss of the top section because of ongoing code violations – a setup he said may improve the view. Wheaton Director of Building and Code Enforcement Joe Kreidl said the association’s effort “had been progressing well” and confirmed the completion of all but two critical projects identified in the report as of July 14. The association plans to address 39 remaining minor violations after the fair. Despite the improvements, the association remains unsure how long the fairgrounds and the year-round programming it hosts will continue. County officials have been weighing the best future use of the site, which may or may not include the fairgrounds. County Board Member Jim Healy, who is involved in determining what’s next for

Headlining the fair the night of July 23 is The Willis Clan, of TLC. The Neverly Brothers will perform July 24. It’s a great guide and choosing a glass this way only enhances the culinary experience. The extensive menu tempts with seafood, chops, pasta, sandwiches, salads, a calorie-conscious collection and gluten-free dishes. At Cooper’s Hawk, the desserts are as homespun and classic as the dishes themselves. The chocolate cake, filled with layers of chocolate mousse and ganache, was outstanding – a decadent treat without the heaviness some full-size desserts impart. The crumbled apple pie was not a slice, but rather a whole personal pie, capped with a flourish of crust and drizzled caramel sauce. Both dishes were served with vanilla ice cream, and definitely sized to share. All in all, this was a wonderful lunch filled with deliciously satisfying food and great wine. I noticed an extensive children’s menu that offered classic kid fare, but also some alternatives to the typical chicken fingers and pizza that were clever, but no less approachable for the young ones – chicken pot stickers, pasta with homemade meatballs,

BURR RIDGE – Lunch at Cooper’s Hawk? As a wine lover, it wasn’t hard to convince me. Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant has become known for its wide selection of wines and its carefully paired menu of modern American comfort food. On a particularly lovely afternoon, I set out with a friend to the location in the Burr Ridge Village Center, and opted for a table on the patio. I ordered a glass of the housemade sangria, a delicious wine punch loaded with fresh fruit and served chilled, perfect for the sunny summer day. My companion chose an equally summery peach wine, which she described as fresh and light – sweet, but not syrupy. It is one of a variety of fruit wines produced by Cooper’s Hawk. We whet our appetites with a starter of Mexican Drunken Shrimp, which were wrapped in bacon and served with fresh guacamole and a butter sauce laced with lime and tequila. The guacamole took center stage, fresh and delicious, pairing well with the saltiness of the crisp bacon. We shared two entrees, opting for beef and chicken. The Chicken Giardiniera was lightly breaded with panko crumbs and Parmesan, and its crispiness held up well to the vinegars and oils of the fresh giardiniera that topped it. The flavors were lovely, not too spicy, and the thought occurred that this combination would make a delightful sandwich. The Short Rib Risotto was a satisfying combination of creamy carnaroli rice, tender boneless short ribs and a rich and flavorful wine sauce melding mushrooms, sweet onions, shaved Parmesan and white truffle oil. I’m a sucker for any roast meat with the perfect sauce, and this certainly fit the bill. A sublime comfort food, it almost made me hope for fall weather. I should mention that every single item on the Coo-

Summer a learning experience for WeGo, St. Francis

St. Francis

The Spartans began the summer league playoffs with a 7-5 victory against Hinsdale Central on July 13 before falling 4-1 against Downers Grove South the next day. The team was coming off a spring in which it finished in third place in Class 3A. Strong defense was a staple of that squad, as it was this summer. “It’s actually carried over from the

WEST CHICAGO – This summer has been a learning experience for the West Chicago baseball team, which lost a majority of its 2015 spring lineup and pitching staff to graduation. “We’ve played a lot of young kids,” said coach Dan McCarthy, who will be entering his final season on the job next spring. “We don’t have a lot of returning kids coming back.” The Wildcats, who should bring back a trio of players who got significant playing time in Brian Sullivan, Justin Yackey and Matt Dall next spring, played 17 games before falling 9-3 against East Aurora in the opening round of the playoffs on July 13. “The key will be pitching,” McCarthy said. “The guy that is coming back who threw the most innings is Kyle Olson; he was probably our No. 4 [in the spring]. Brandon Orengo also saw some spot innings. We don’t have a lot of experience there, but we will do our best. We have to find some guys who can throw the ball. “And we will have to play more small ball and try to become better baserunners.” This offseason will be a little different than the past couple of years with the amount of pure instruction the coaching staff will have to do. “We have a lot of teaching to do in the offseason,” the coach said. “We have a lot of situational stuff we have to work on, but that will come. We will be spending more time in the classroom.” West Chicago is coming off a couple of solid campaigns, including a 14-win season last spring. “We’ve put together two pretty good years,” McCarthy said. “The group two years ago won a regional and three of those guys are playing in college. And even last year, though we were a little under .500, it was still a good year.”

spring,” St. Francis coach Nick Hall said. “We made it to state and finished third and we had one error in our seven playoff games. I told the fellas we can play with anybody in the state because we eliminate the big innings, we always stop the bleeding.” Hall used this summer as a chance to let everybody on the roster get game action.

“The entire summer I’m mixing guys at different positions, everyone gets at least two at-bats and guys play at least three or four innings in the field,” he said. “I have to know who can play what because come spring we’re going to have injuries and open spots and I want to know who can contribute in some way.” Two guys who especially stood out

And Colin, the guy that started the [playoff] game for us, he just gets a little better every outing. It is fun to watch.”

COLLEGE NOTES

Connolly racks up accolades with DePaul SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Plenty of high school athletes have a chance to star for their teams, and the same goes for area graduates playing in college. Here’s a look at how some West Chicago-area products fared at the college level this spring:

WeGo graduate Connolly caps stellar DePaul softball career

This spring, Connolly was a National Fastpitch Coaches Association Great Lakes All-Region first-team selection after batting .383 with six doubles, 16 home runs, 30 runs and 48 RBIs. She also walked 39 times for an on-base percentage of .548. Mary Connolly delivers a pitch this season during DePaul’s Big East semifinal game against Seton Hall at Rosemont Stadium. Connolly

was a force at the plate and in the circle for the Blue Demons this spring.

a .331 average and added 11 doubles, three home runs, 25 runs and 27 RBIs. Schmitz was 4-4 on the mound in 14 appearances, compiling an ERA of 3.75 in 60 innings. McKenna made 21 starts and had eight hits, including a pair of doubles.

Koester begins career at Loras

Ryan Koester was a freshman infielder on the Loras baseball team. The West Chicago graduate appeared in 19 games with five starts, and totaled six hits, four runs and four RBIs.

Wheaton Wildcats 16U softball team on a roll this summer SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The Wheaton Wildcats 16U fast pitch softball team has had quite the summer so far. The squad consists of juniors and seniors from four local high schools: Bartlett, West Chicago, Wheaton North and Wheaton Warrenville South. Over the weekend of June 26, the Wildcats participated in the Geneva United States Specialty Sports Association Firecracker Classic, which featured 16 teams. The team went 3-0 in pool play. Then in bracket play, Wheaton came from behind twice in the last inning in two of its games to stay alive. The Wildcats made it to the championship by narrowly defeating the Wheatland Spikes and defeated the Elgin Heat 5-2 in the final to win the tournament.

The Wildcats kept the hot streak going over the Fourth of July weekend, when they competed in the 22-team USSSA Northern Illinois 16U State Championship in Rockford. The team went 2-1 in pool play. They then won three tight games in bracket play and made it to the championship contest where they prevailed 9-3 against the Big Dogs Dynamite to capture the state crown. On July 7, the Illinois Power League held its league championships at the Chicago Bandits Stadium in Rosemont. The Wildcats made it to the final in their age group for the third year in a row and defeated the Bartlett Hawks 4-0 to take home the 2015 Illinois Power League 16U trophy. Later in July, the Wildcats will participate in a national USSSA tournament in Peoria.
