By PAIGE LISTON pliston@shawmedia.com WEST CHICAGO – Railroad Days has been a summer tradition in West Chicago for more than 30 years, featuring exciting events such as free concerts, a prestigious carnival, food and merchant vendors, and car and bike shows, to name a few. This year, however, the festival has been downsized because of limited space at the usual site for the event, Reed-Keppler Park. Only two features of Railroad Days remain: a July 11 fireworks show and a parade July 12. The event cancellations are tied to West Chicago Park District’s new recreational facility at Reed-Keppler Park, according to Park District Executive Director Gary Major. “We forewarned the city about this addition, and we offered up another location at Kress Creek Farms, but it was deemed unsuitable because it’s along a creek, posing safety concerns,”

Sabathne said Railroad Days is important to West Chicago residents because the event gives them the chance to be ambassadors for their city. “Railroad Days helps the city’s image because it lets people know how great our city is and allows them to see the quality of our parks,” Sabathne said. “It allows us to take pride in West Chicago because we have a lot to be proud of.” Although the site for next year’s festival is still unknown, Major stresses that the festival is important to the community, so a new location needs to be figured out to restore all that Railroad Days has to offer.

8 Q & A with the Hearing Doctor Discount Programs
Q: Can I really save money if I get
hearing aids through a “discount plan”?
A: Truthfully, some plans will help you
save a little money on the hearing aid itself. However, you usually end up paying more later.
Most discount plans do not include the follow-up services necessary to ensure the most successful outcome. These discount programs work with less used hearing aid companies and older model hearing aids to provide the cheaper prices. When the discount plan dictates which product we can use, the patient usually loses. It takes the expertise of the Doctor of Audiology to evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe the correct hearing aid for the patient. Not all hearing aids are created equal, nor are they appropriate for everyone. Dr. Terri Lightbody (630) 580-5777
The patient using the discount program is frequently dissatisfied with their experience when they discover the limitations of the program. Discount programs never work directly with the
patient, they always refer their patients to a small group of providers they have recruited. Another complaint about discount programs from patients is the “middle man” effect. This is where you add another part to a transaction; there is a substantially higher chance of miscommunication, delays or mistakes due to having the middle man. The patient ends up suffering. The discount programs dictate which provider you will see. You have no idea who that person is or what their credentials are. More often than not, the providers are located more than 20 minutes away from where the patient lives. Discount programs are usually created by insurance companies as a way to avoid hearing aid coverage. The insurance company is not paying for anything. It may be confusing, however the Audiologist can help you sort through the advertisements and find the best product and pricing for your individual needs.

Former COD trustee files complaint with state board By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – A former College of DuPage trustee has filed a complaint alleging the committee for a slate of former Board of Trustees candidates failed to report a sizable loan during the process of the April election. Kim Savage, who was soundly defeated in her bid for re-election Kim Savage this year, filed the formal complaint with the Illinois State Board of Elections, alleging a $20,000 loan from current college Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton to the Clean Slate for College of DuPage Committee was not reported in a timely manner. The committee supported then-candidates Charles Bernstein, Deanne Mazzochi and Frank Napolitano. Savage alleges in the complaint the loan was received April 27 but not reported to the state until May 17 – long after the five business days required by Illinois’ Campaign Disclosure Act. In a statement, Savage acknowledged small campaigns often have difficulty following the act. “The Clean Slate ran on a very vocal platform of total transparency and to end all alleged violations of policy, yet their own campaign clearly failed to follow one of the simplest requirements of the Campaign Disclosure Act,” she said. The trio’s platform was announced after months of controversy at the college, including a $763,000 buyout for President Robert Breuder, trustees expensing questionable items at the on-campus Waterleaf Restaurant, theft and forgery charges being brought against a school employee and more. In a high-profile election, the three swept the race, with several thousand dollars in donations and in-kind services from Hamilton, her husband and her campaign fund, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections. Since taking office, the new trustees voted Hamilton into the chairwomanship and formed a majority, enacting several reforms, including placing Breuder and two financial administrators on leave and agreeing to pay for a state financial audit of the school.

High court case could end ‘fair share’ fees The U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear a case last week that has union bosses worried. Very worried. In the case, Rebecca Friedrichs and nine other California public school teachers don’t want to pay mandatory “fair share” fees to a union. They argue that being forced to pay these fees, even those that only go toward VIEWS bargaining and contract Scott administration, is a violation Reeder of their right to Free Speech under the United States Constitution. Why? Because they don’t agree with political views of the union that wants their money. The union counters that none of the “fair share” fees are funneled into political activities such as campaign contributions to legislative candidates. But here’s the rub: Just about everything a union representing government workers does is political. Who said so? U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. Last year, I was in Washington covering an Illinois case being heard by the high court and Kennedy noted that collective bargaining for government workers affects the size of government – something that has political implications “in an era where government is getting bigger and bigger, and this is becoming more and more of an important issue to more people.” As soon as I heard those words leave his lips, I thought: “He’s signaling to the world that he would be open to giving ‘right-to-work’ status to every city, state, county and school district employee in America.” Sure enough, on June 30, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear Friedrich’s case, which could do just that. In the business world, unions have shrunk. But local government remains a stronghold for Big Labor. In fact, between 2002 and 2014, government-worker unions combined pumped $47.5 million in the war chests of various Illinois state elected officials. How much of that money came from workers who really don’t want to belong to a union is hard to say. But one thing is certain, not everyone who is paying money to a union wants to. They pay because they want to keep their jobs. No one should be subjected to funding an organization they don’t agree with just to provide for their family. But many are forced to anyway. Whether that remains the case, the U.S. Supreme Court will tell us next year.

College wise to consider big changes at Waterleaf Were you pleased to hear that your tax dollars and students’ tuition payments were used to fund more than $530,000 in annual losses for Waterleaf Restaurant? Probably not. The fancy, and frankly, quite nice restaurant at the College of DuPage has been a massive money loser since it opened in 2011. It’s virtually certain that any privately owned restaurant that saw those kinds of losses would’ve long since ceased operations. And lest you find yourself thinking that these losses are strictly a result of the restaurant’s use as an educational facility, that’s not the case, either. Students only staff the restaurant on Mondays and Tuesdays; the rest of the time, it’s run as a professional restaurant. The school’s trustees are considering three options to stem the tide of red ink:
Suburban Life Media Editorial Board Laura Burke, Dave Lemery, Matt Hendrickson, Anna Schier, Alex Soulier, Mary Beth Versaci
convert the restaurant to classrooms, open it to leasing and events, or repurpose it as an academic lab. Nice as the restaurant is, all of those options sound preferable to the status quo. With all the fine dining options that abound in the College of DuPage’s district, it’s hard to believe that anyone ever thought that Waterleaf could’ve been anything but a financial boondoggle. If there’s a way to let students continue to train in a restaurant-style environment while cutting the losses way back, it’s pretty obvious that would be a desirable outcome. And it sounds like several trustees are thinking along those lines. We’d like to see Waterleaf continue in some fashion, with some mix of student and faculty running things, but as a professionally run restaurant, this is a business model that clearly has failed.

SOUND OFF
I’m responding to the caller titled “Teachers’ compensation has an impact on pension crisis.” ... I think the thing that’s most important here to say is that if you would like to become a teacher and benefit from those benefits that you say that we receive, then you’re more than welcome to do that. ... I worked in corporate America for over, oh, about 25 years, before I became a teacher. I have a bachelor’s degree, I have a master’s degree and I have continuing education, and my salary compensates me for the type of education that I have in the educational industry. I also don’t get bonuses that people get in corporate America, and I also don’t get a golden parachute if I was to leave an organization in corporate America. Every job has their own benefits and perks.

This is in response to the person who was griping about teachers and how great we’ve got it. Teaching isn’t a job, it’s a calling. Half these parents can’t even handle your own kids, try handling 30 at one time. I don’t know what this person does for a living, but I’m sure with a little training, I could do it. There’s no way he could do my job.

Continued from page 8 None of the Clean Slate trustees responded to a request for comment, although campaign manager Clayton Turner did via email. “The Clean Slate for College of DuPage Committee has reported all donations and expenses,” he said. “The Clean Slate Committee has corrected technical nonconformities and is fully compliant.” In the case of a Campaign Disclosure Act violation, before determining a possible fine, the Illinois State Board of Elections website states the following items are considered: • Whether a committee attempted to disclose the contribution and any attempts made to correct the violation • Whether the violation is attributed to a clerical or computer error • The amount of the contribution • Whether the violation arose from a discrepancy between the date a contribution was reported transferred and the date it was received by a committee • The number of days a contribution report was late • Past violations Recently, an internal school audit was released that stated Hamilton violated college board policy by endorsing the Clean Slate during the election. “It shows politics gripped COD leadership prior to the April election, and COD leadership spent tax dollars to

Hamilton said leadership overlooked Savage’s involvement in the election and that Savage and former trustee Nancy Svoboda campaigned together as a slate. Questions also were raised by watchdog group Edgar County Watchdogs about an email sent by Savage that was made public in which she asked for help from the school’s attorney with answering questions for an article about the election. “Considering the intense scrutiny the college was under during the same time I was in the middle of an election campaign, I had legal and fiduciary responsibility to avoid compromising the college’s legal position in any statements I made as both a candidate and a sitting board member,” Savage said in the statement. pus, according to the report. In addition, receipts provided from 2009 to 2014 do not match amounts reported to the IRS, suggesting college officials were unable to identify all of Breuder’s foundation expenses during that time, the report stated. “The days depicted in the records you have are over,” school spokesman Randall Samborn said in a statement in the report. “With tough economic times, we hope foundation dollars get to students and tuition, not wining and dining.”

Planting a garden that supports pollinators can be a very rewarding task and you don’t have to have a large garden to make a difference. The Monarch butterfly has experienced a rapid decline in recent years and if homeowners across the country start planting “Monarch Waystations”, we can help the survival of the species. If you are looking to attract Monarchs there is one plant that you must include in your garden planning: milkweed. Monarch butterfly caterpillars are picky eaters and adult Monarch females lay their eggs on milkweed as it is the only plant larvae will eat! In this area, there are a number of plants you can add to your landscaping which will attract Monarchs, as well as other butterflies, bees, moths and even hummingbirds. Many flowers – especially native plants – are a great source of nectar for adult Monarchs. Choose a spot that receives at least six hours of sun a day, which is required by most butterfly-loving plants. When selecting milkweed, be sure you choose one that appropriate for this area. This includes Common, Swamp, and Whorled milkweed or the vibrant orange Butterfly Weed. In order to attract adult butterflies, add a mix of annuals and perennials that bloom throughout the growing season. For example, you may want to include allium or chives (early season), along with bee balm or black-eyed susan for the mid-season, and aster or sedum (late season). Many of these plants can be picked up at your local nursery and specialty nurseries carry native plants and have knowledgeable staff to www.geparks.org help answer questions.

Q:
How do I attract Monarch butterflies to my garden?
A:
Pharmacy What is the difference between a food allergy and a food sensitivity? A food allergy is usually an immediate response with a symptom and it comes from an immune response (IgE and IgG immune reactions)
A food sensitivity is a measure of inflammation by the amount seen of white blood CELL swelling. This response is usually delayed and when you eat that food you get a serotonin release which to the brain is “happy chemical” and when you don’t you have withdrawal symptoms (craving, headache, unpleasant feeling)
ALCAT is a brand of food sensitivities blood testing. Some doctors believe 60% of all illnesses. Glen Ellyn Pharmacy sells ALCAT tests.

WHEATON – Thanks to the love one woman had for her family’s legacy, more than 5,000 pieces of century-old history are at the DuPage County Historical Museum. Longtime DuPage County resident Patricia Torode Vaillancourt Woodstrup, who died in 2003, was passionate about her family, daughter Wendi Woodstrup said. “Family was always important,” she said. “We always thought of it as storytelling. We didn’t know the people in these photos ... but it wasn’t just a story. It’s a look at how many people lived and worked in this area.” Wendi is one of Patricia’s five children who inherited the thousands of photos, clothes and other items largely dating back to the middle and late 1800s. The collection highlights the history of five prominent DuPage County families to whom Patricia was related – the Torodes, Fullers, Rodgers, PlumNathan Lurz - nlurz@shawmedia.com mers and Thurstons – to give a glimpse Wendi Woodstrup, daughter of Patricia Torode Vaillancourt Woodstrup, looks over her into the lives of the county’s early setfamily’s collection of artifacts from the 1800s during a July 2 visit to the DuPage County tlers. Wendi came to the exhibit, titled “Inheriting DuPage: A Family HistoHistorical Museum.
ry,” last week during a visit from her home in Hawaii. Museum Assistant Mychal Brown, who has been working on the project since 2010, said the museum wanted to focus on the subject for the county’s 175th anniversary this year, but could display only 298 pieces because of space restraints. The collection proved to be a museum coordinator’s dream. Most items were meticulously labeled with names of owners, approximate dates and explanations. “Most of the work was done for us,” museum Manager and Educator Michelle Podkowa said. “That really let us dive into it even further to put together the story.” Podkowa said the size and depth of the loan was a first for the museum. Wendi said she and her siblings – who all live in the area – have loved seeing many items that filled their childhood home and attic on display. “It’s a little overwhelming,” she said. “It’s so incredible. We knew this museum was where we wanted it.” The display runs through Sept. 7 at the museum, 102 E. Wesley St. For information, visit dupagemuseum.org.

*VUZ\TLY ;PWZ 5 ways to get buyers to see your open house as their next house (BPT) - What makes a person or a family decide a home is the perfect for them? Is it all location, location, location? What about price, schools or the neighborhood? Or is it something else; a feeling they get when they walk in the door, a detail they notice or a scent in the air. If you’re selling your home your home, your location, neighborhood and school district are predetermined. Yet there is plenty you can do yourself to make sure your open house has that wow factor and captivates would-be buyers. Here are five tips to get you started so that next family will determine your home is the perfect home.
1
Get clean. It sounds simple, but it’s amazing how many homeowners don’t clean their homes before an open house. This is one case where lived-in isn’t going to cut it. The kitchen and bathrooms should be spotless, cracked tiles should be repaired and any plumbing issues should be addressed. Expect that people will try the sinks and flush the toilets. If you don’t feel you can get your home ready on your own, hire a professional cleaning service to do the job for you. The money you spend on the cleaners will be well worth it when your house sells quickly.
2
Add a fresh sent to the air. Your home should be pleasing to the eye as well as pleasing to the nose. Realtors have recognized the benefits of great smells for years. You can keep your home smelling great throughout the showing - and without synthetic ingredients - by using pure essential oils from Aura Cacia. Try this simple recipe to create a warm, comforting atmosphere that can help put potential property buyers at ease with these recipes: • 1 cup coarse-grained, chunky sea salt
3
Time for a makeover. If your home needs a more substantial makeover before it can sell, focus your energy and your money on the most important rooms in the home. Kitchens and master bedrooms sell homes, meaning that a granite countertop, new appliance or fresh coat of bedroom paint will give you a better chance to sell your home than other projects may allow.
4 5
Cut the clutter. Even the cleanest homes still feel messy if there’s lots of clutter. Before your open house, adopt a minimalist approach and keep your home as clutter-free as possible. Remember, you want buyers to see the beauty of your home, not simply the items you keep in it.
• 1 teaspoon jojoba or grapeseed oil (just enough to make the salts glisten) • 25 drops vanilla precious essential oil • 10 drops lavender essential oil • 10 drops sweet orange essential oil Mix salt and oils, pour into a decorative dish or bowl and set out on a table. Placing the crystals in a warm sunny window or near a heat register will help diffuse the delicious aroma throughout the room. Stir in additional essential oils to boost the scent as needed. More recipe ideas and open house tips can be found at www.auracacia.com.
Start at the curb. Poor curb appeal can put buyers off to your home before they even step foot inside. Make sure your home’s outside is every bit as beautiful as the inside. Paint the exterior if you need to, plant flowers in the flower bed and mow the lawn. Buyers should never walk up to your front door already thinking it’s a fixer-upper. An open house provides an excellent opportunity to showcase your home and help buyers fall in love with. And once they do, they’re sure to make your current home their future home.

The Wildcats have taken part in 7-on-7 passing competitions this summer against St. Charles East, Glenbard South, Marmion and Bartlett, among others. “They’ve been going great, just getting all of those reps,” Monken said. “Going against your own guys is one thing, but to go against opponents you get to see different pass plays and different athletes. It gives you a barometer and it gives you film on who can do it and who can’t. It’s been good for us.” West Chicago has two weeks of camp left before a two-week break. Then practice begins with the season opener set for Aug. 28 against Oswego East. “It seems like we just got out of school yesterday,” Monken said. “We are four weeks away from starting camp again. It’s crazy but this is what we love to do.”

WEST CHICAGO – In the midst of summer camp before season two of the rebuilding project at West Chicago, head football coach Ted Monken is seeing some positive signs. “We’ve got good skill kids and we will be faster than we were last year,” Monken said. “We are also a little bit more athletic overall. Hopefully, that pays dividends on Friday nights. “And the biggest thing, we feel we have competition at some important spots. On the offensive and defensive line, we are always trying to find big-bodied guys so that’s never a place where we feel we are loaded. But at the skill positions, we have competition. If player A is not getting the job done, we can put player B in and not feel like there is such a drop-off.” In a perfect world, Monken would like to see more numbers, though he clearly understands the predicament. One thing that was started last year is the varsity and sophomores practicing together and combined. This summer, there are close to 80 kids in camp. “We are always trying to get more numbers, numbers are a big part of high school football,” he said. “It’s a little bit like the chicken and the egg. We probably need to do some winning before we can expect more numbers. You just have to hope you can be successful enough to get kids excited and have them come out for the team. “But some of the great things about having the sophomores work with the varsity, they really get a chance to develop and it gives us an opportunity to see them.” What Monken is looking for on offense is consistency. “If you don’t have consistency, you don’t know what

WN flying high with Changes alter football playoff landscape Local teams affected trip to national 7-on-7 By DAN SANTAROMITA
dsantaromita@shawmedia.com
By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com WHEATON – A couple of days before the start of the Red Grange Classic 7-on7 event at the end of June, Wheaton North football players asked coach Joe Wardynski if a trip to the National Select Championship was in the cards if they won. Wardynski said sure, fully realizing how daunting it would be to emerge victorious from the 32-team event. Now, the trip from July 16 to 18 to Hoover, Ala., has become a reality after the Falcons went 6-0 on Day 2 of the Red Grange Classic on June 26. The run was capped by a 15-14 victory against Naperville Central in the championship game. “We went 1-3-1 on the first day and then we rattle off six wins in a row on Friday,” Wardynski said. “You never know. ... One of the things about it, the kids are put in a competitive situation and you can see how they respond.” Wheaton North will be making its second trip to Hoover; the Falcons received an at-large berth in 2013. At the National Select Championship, they will be going against other 7-on-7 event winners from around the country. For now, the program is wrapping up its fourth week of camp. “I think the kids have done a good job this summer,” Wardynski said. “Attendance at everything has been good. We are probably not as deep
The IHSA announced some rule changes that will affect postseason play in team sports, including a new way to seed teams in the football playoffs. On June 15, the IHSA board of directors approved a change to the structure of the football playoffs, which will seed teams in Classes 7A and 8A from 1 to 32. The previous structure featured 16-team and eight-team brackets to limit travel distances. However, that came under fire because of an unbalanced seeding format and many of the same teams facing each other year after year. For example, last year Class 8A was broken into a 16-team bracket and two brackets of eight teams. The 16team bracket, which included schools mostly from the north and northwest suburbs as well as West Suburban Conference teams Lyons Township, Glenbard West and Oak Park-River Forest, featured four teams with 8-1 records and three 9-0 teams. Each of the two eightteam brackets had only two 8-1 teams and no undefeated teams. The new rule should help alleviate the imbalance in the bracket and also provide fresh matchups in the playoffs. Three of the 16 first-round games in the Class 8A bracket were rematches of conference games from the regular season. “We like to play other teams,” Downers Grove South coach Mark Molinari said. “We were thrilled to play Simeon last year. We didn’t have the result we wanted, but just to play someone else was awesome. If that means we have to travel to Edwardsville or somewhere
as we’ve been in some other years, so we are making sure we are staying healthy while getting everything taught that needs to be.” The team’s offense is inexperienced, returning only two starters in quarterback Luke Anthony and offensive lineman Owen Sleski. Wide receivers Adam Terrini, Theo Gabriel and Marcus Gustaveson all had strong showings at the Red Grange Classic. “We have all new wide receivers, a new tight end and running back, and four new linemen,” Wardynski said. “But we like the group we’ve got and our skill kids are pretty good. We tend to have kids who can throw it, catch it and run it.” Wheaton North brings back more returners on defense. “We’ve got six kids that played quite a bit last year,” Wardynski said. “I would say that our defense better play good football because that is where we’ve got experience. And the talent level is pretty good there.” The Falcons begin the 2015 season Aug. 28 when they travel to rival Wheaton Warrenville South. And while that date is quickly approaching, Wardynski said it is not time to get overly excited. “You don’t want to get too jacked up now,” he said. “Just get our work done, get the kids in the weight room, get stronger. We are still looking at this as preparation time. It won’t take long to get the kids excited.”

loaded regionals such as the Class 3A baseball regional that included powerhouse teams Lemont, Joliet Catholic and Lincoln-Way West, all state title contenders, meeting in the first rounds of the playoffs. In addition, the so-called success adjustment rule will be implemented for the 2015-16 school year. Nonboundaried schools with at least two state trophies in the past four years and at least one in the past two years will be moved up one class. In all, 23 teams were moved up. “I’m thrilled, absolutely thrilled,” Molinari said. “We’ve been asking for it for a long time [as coaches] and I’ll be the first one to say it’s almost perfect.” Another local team that could be affected by the classification adjustment is Nazareth football. The Roadrunners had the third-smallest enrollment, based on their nonboundary school multiplier, in Class 6A this past fall. With Montini and Sacred-Heart Griffin, the finalists each of the past two years in Class 5A, moving up to 6A, Nazareth could be on the bubble to move down despite being defending 6A champions. Another possibility is a Nazareth-Montini playoff meeting. “I go way back with [Montini coach] Chris [Andriano],” Nazareth coach Tim Racki said. “He was the head coach at Montini when I played there. I have great respect for him. We have a great relationship. If we saw him that would be a great challenge.”
else, I’m completely fine with it.” In the other six classes, there will be two 16-team brackets, thus eliminating eight-team quadrants. The previous rule, according to the IHSA’s release on the announcement, would “change the bracket to quadrants if certain travel mileage distances were exceeded.” “I love it,” Downers Grove North coach John Wander said. “They used to say travel was bad; I think that’s what makes it. We’re a unique sport where not everyone makes the playoffs, and if someone told me I had to go to East St. Louis, I’d be happier than heck because that means we’re back in the playoffs this year.” Other team sports also will have a restructuring in the postseason. In smaller classes and outside the Chicago area, sectionals in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball had been separated into four regionals based on geography and then seeded. Now, Suburban Life sports edisectionals will be broken down tor Jason Rossi contributed to into two subsectionals to avoid this story.
