D-201 trims $6.7M from proposed school improvement plan WESTMONT – Westmont School District 201 will bring a scaled-back facility improvement plan to election ballots this spring that includes a price tag $6.7 million less than the referendum voters shot down in November. The District 201 School Board voted unanimously Jan. 13 to pursue a third referendum request April 7 election ballots that asks constituents permission to issue $19.7 million in bonds to address safety and access concerns. November’s referendum carried a $26.4 million price tag. “The school board has listened to the community and this time around we are proposing to remove items that were not tightly focused on safety

and security of the learning environments,” District 201 School Board President Marie Charlton said in a phone interview earlier this month. The new plan has a “reduced scope but [preserves] the integrity of the projects to address safety, security and learning environment needs of schools,” according to district documents. Officials removed several school improvements previously proposed

in the referendums, including nixing a renovation of the pool at Westmont High School, a potential savings of $2.8 million. Other changes from November’s proposal include the elimination of a proposed visitors parking area at Manning Elementary School; a reduced renovation of the art/music room at Miller Elementary School; and the elimination of an HVAC and electrical renovation at Westmont Junior High.

Charlton has said the board is encouraged with the referendum results from November carrying into April. That plan was rejected by voters 56 percent to 44 percent but garnered 34 more percentage points compared to a similar referendum in March 2014, which was overwhelmingly rejected 78 percent to 22 percent. “We had such a great leap [in November] with a huge increase in the number of people supporting this,” she said. “The first time the public didn’t like the funding and last time there were questions on the necessity of some of the improvement projects. Now we’re limiting those extra things.” Charlton said the school district will now plan informational meetings for the public, as well as create a new website.

Cronin touts economic progress By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com The future of DuPage County may look bright in many ways, but there are still many challenges ahead, the county board chairman said. In front of a crowd of elected officials, chambers of commerce and businesses, Dan Cronin gave an economically focused State of the County address Thursday in Woodridge. Cronin presented remarks and answered questions at the event sponsored by county economic development organization Choose DuPage and supported by chambers in Woodridge, Downers Grove, Darien, Hinsdale and Lisle. The Chairman said he welcomed the opportunity to deliver such an address to so many in the business world, saying the “relationship between DuPage and our business community is vital.” And Cronin believed that connec-
tion was flourishing, touting a 4.5 percent unemployment rate, the lowest in the region thanks to a conscious effort to create a business friendly environment, he said. “I do think we at the county all join in a chorus of voices that really create a culture out here in DuPage County ... that does really and truly convey the message that, we want your business, we support business, and we value economic growth,” he said. Cronin said manufacturing was climbing in the county, with 15 straight months of industrial vacancy rate drops through May 2014, and he projects a steady 3.75 percent growth in county sales tax revenue. The county also retains a AAA bond rating from all three major credit agencies, which is the case for fewer than 1 percent of all counties in the U.S., he said. The county is intending to eliminate a quarter-cent sales tax in 2016 as the maligned DuPage Water Commission
transitions to a self-sustaining utility, a mirror of Cronin’s Accountability, Consolidation and Transparency initiative dedicated to reducing the size and cost of local government. The initiative’s successes are highlighted by the county’s continued commitment to a balanced budget, the 45 government jobs that have been cut, and more than $30.5 million the county has saved under Cronin’s watch, he said. “But our movement in DuPage is about more than cost cutting,” he said. “We are in the business of growing. Growing ideas, growing high-tech manufacturing, growing tomorrow’s businesses.” That is especially important with the changing demographics in the county, he said. Nearly 175,000 residents are considered low income by federal poverty standards and more than 16 percent of children in DuPage County are food insecure. Cronin pointed specifically to the
Rev3 tech and manufacturing incubator, the Elgin-O’Hare Western Access Project, a new regional global marketing initiative to help spur international exports and a recent U.S. Commerce Department designation that the region will be eligible to apply for $1.3 billion in federal grants to support job creation. All would be important to give those in need “hand-ups” and not “handouts,” he said. Greg Bedalov, president and CEO of Choose DuPage, said the marketing initiative was especially exciting for him, saying that in 10 years working in economic development, he had “never seen the type of regional cooperation and collaboration that’s happening right now.” He has high hopes that area counties will be able to work together even more to build a more stable economic future through improved marketing, transportation and investment.
Business experts to anchor Economic Forecast event By KELLI MURRAY kmurray@shawmedia.com What is the economic forecast for the suburban market in 2015? A panel of experts will provide their insights during the Economic Forecast 2015 event that will be hosted by Suburban Life on Jan. 27 at Drury Lane Conference Center in Oakbrook Terrace. Panelists slated for the event are Anthony Griffin, executive director of Berwyn Development Corp.; Heath Ashenfelter, division vice president, True Value Company Chicago; Timothy H. Ricordati, dean of the School for Professional Studies, Elmhurst College; Richard W. Reichert, president and CEO of Community Bank of Elmhurst; and Theresa Schulz, Schulz Properties Ltd.,
Downers Grove. “I’m excited about the slate of panelists,” Griffin said. “It’s a good cross section and I think it will be a lively discussion, but also very comprehensive.” Schulz will speak of her more than 20 years of commercial leasing experience in DuPage and surrounding counties. “I will highlight the market areas of interest within the industry and the strategy behind expanding tenants,” Schulz said. “... Both commercial property owners and businesses/tenants will greatly benefit by the knowledge shared within my segment of this upcoming presentation.” The moderator will be Dave Lemery, editor, Suburban Life Media, and the keynote speaker will be John Quigley, president and CEO of the Elmhurst
Chamber of Commerce. Quigley said he expects attendees to gain insight into the intricacies of the economy. “The better business owners understand their place in the economic ladder, the better prepared they’ll be to take a step up rather than a step down,” Quigley said. Lemery plans to prompt a conversation about how changes in the economy in recent years will impact the year ahead. “We’re still dealing with the aftermath of the recession and a recovery that has been terrific for some but has left others behind,” Lemery said. “What are the opportunities and risks that businesses and individuals need to look out for in 2015? I’m eager to hear the responses.”

It’s YOUR Home. Only The Finest Will Do.
A: Under various circumstances, bleeding can occur in the mouth. Bleeding is to be expected after a dental procedure like a tooth extraction. Your dentist will tell you what to expect in a circumstance like that. Bleeding can also occur after an accident, like biting your tongue or the inside of your cheek.
Home & Garden Expo Drury Lane v Oak Brook Terrace
If bleeding comes on suddenly, rinse your mouth out with water and see if you can identify the source of the blood flow. Depending on the volume of bleeding, or what you see, you may want to contact your dentist immediately. But if your gums bleed after brushing, for example, and they are sore and appear red and puffy, the bleeding can be an early sign of periodontal (gum) disease. That is a condition you definitely want to address as soon as possible. Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss. As with most health issues, the sooner you start treating gum disease, the easier it will be to get it under control and eliminate it. As mentioned, bleeding after a tooth extraction is normal. You should follow your dentist’s instructions carefully. Generally, a blood clot will develop in the site within an hour or so after the procedure. You should leave the clot undisturbed for a day or two until the wound begins to heal. If bleeding persists, you can press a gauze pad on the wound to stanch the flow. Talk with your dentist about the causes of bleeding in the mouth.

Indian Chinese cuisine goes back over 100 years when people of Chinese origin moved to India across the North East Border and settled in Calcutta. Most of these immigrants were of Hakka ancestry. Over the years they adapted the Chinese cuisine for the locale Indian seasoning and cooking techniques. This is how Indian Chinese fusion began.

Westmont business moving forward in ’15 A new year is here with a strong start in the Westmont business community. The Westmont Chamber has prepared and is implementing an exciting agenda for this year. Based on economic indicators, the positive trends and COMMUNITY momentum we have experiVOICE enced in Westmont during Larry the past year will continue Forssberg throughout 2015 and beyond. We ask that each and every resident help keep our community growing in simple and fun ways: shop in Westmont, dine in Westmont and discover all Westmont has to offer, including our community events, recreational resources and community organizations that make Westmont a wonderful place to live, work and visit. So what is on the agenda for 2015? Advancing the important work of the Westmont Economic Development Partnership, a platform structured to recruit new businesses to locate in Westmont and keep existing businesses in Westmont. In addition to business recruitment and retention, resources will be targeted toward attracting home builders to Westmont and to help real estate agents make prospective home buyers aware of the many benefits of building and living in Westmont. To help this work be successful, contact me if you know a business looking to expand or find a new location. The chamber also would like to hear recommendations for what type of businesses you and your family would enjoy and support in Westmont. Next, the communitywide Westmont Community Awards Dinner is scheduled for March 25 at the Oak Brook Hills Resort. Also scheduled is the annual Economic Outlook Briefing on Feb. 13 at our own Hilton Oak Brook Hills Resort & Conference Center, featuring Senior Economist William Strauss with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Strauss has an excellent track record at forecasting key economic trends and providing valuable insights for our business owner and managers. Then, on Feb. 18, the chamber will host an open house and expo for business owners to connect and expand their business network and sales. Westmont is moving forward with positive momentum in 2015. We ask for your continued support of our business community through participation in community events and Shop, Dine and Discover Westmont first. We also look forward to hearing your ideas and recommendations for Westmont; contact me at wcctb@westmontchamber.com or at 630-960-5553. See you around Westmont.

Westmont Junior High and Westmont High School boys basketball coaches squared off Jan. 14 in memory of late Westmont High student Emily Wheeler, who passed away in September after a courageous battle with cancer. The Coaches vs. Cancer event raised $520 for the American Cancer Society in Emily’s name. It’s great to see Emily’s fight living on. ing or fill out an application form.” Conquering the Department of Motor Vehicles is also high on the list for many learners. “Imagine the sheer intimidation factor of a DMV,” Howenstine said. “There are arrows pointing all over the place, and people barking at you. Just to get to the test area you have to navigate a maze.” A tutor must have 18 hours of training at Literacy DuPage before being paired with a learner, and must commit to two hours a week for six months to a year, Howenstine said. The fundraiser will help supplement the $500 to $600 a year to support a student, she said. Underpass could save lives
I’d like to respond to the overpass/underpass in Glen Ellyn. I think an overpass/underpass is more important than a pool situation that was going here. Also an underpass from the train station from the north side to the south side is also very important. I think it could save lives in the future.

It never ceases to amaze me of the stupidity of some people, especially some of those in the Sound Off section of the Suburban Life. One person complained about plowing of streets and snow left on his driveway. He said the village should come up with a solution to this. Do you have any ideas? I’ll bet not. Another complaint was about getting on Ogden Avenue from the Burlington area. The advice was to install a traffic signal. What kind of a signal, to do what and where? In many cases, traffic control signals do not help but add to problems. Look at the Forest Hills section of Western Springs. There is a total of more than 95 stop signs there – all installed at the insistence of residents. This section of the village is about one-eighth the size of the total. Ridiculous.

DOWNERS GROVE – Fashion and wine will soon blend into a philanthropic event to benefit Literacy DuPage, a free literacy tutoring program for adults. Reading Between the Wines will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 31 at Parkers’ Restaurant and Bar, 1000 31st St., Downers Grove. Tickets are $40 and include a three-course meal with wine flights for each course. “It’s a wonderful event,” said Mary Howenstine, development manager for Literacy DuPage. “The highlight, for me, is one of our learners will speak at the event.” Literacy DuPage clientele is more than 50 percent immigrants whose English is a second language, Howenstine said. The remainder are individuals who were born and raised in this country, but did not learn well in the American education system for a variety of reasons, she added. The clients are paired with tutors for a customized literacy program to help individuals with low literacy, considered a third- or fourth-grade reading level. “We have hundreds of learners and pair them with individual tutors,” Howenstine said. “They set their own goals. We are driven. Single-minded. Forward focused. We believe in keeping your health moving forward as far down the road as humanly possible. In nudging, nurturing, supporting, preventing and running interference for you along the way. In doing things that have rarely been done before in hospitals. To not just try, but do. To turn upside down, right side up. And send it on its way. We believe this is one heck of a road trip we’re on. But one well worth the journey no matter where you are along it. Because this joy ride can lead us all to a healthier place. And if that’s not a good thing, well, then we don’t know what is. We hope you see how warm and welcoming our school community is - it’s something we value and hope to pass on to all who visit with us.” St. Joseph School offers challenging

Blankets For Babies An Exciting Service Project! SPONSORED BY By Denise Freese The holidays are traditionally a time of giving, sharing, and doing things for others, especially for the less fortunate. Although there are many families who need assistance throughout the year, the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons offer many opportunities to consider helping others through tough times. Sharing Connections, www.SharingConnections.org, is an organization that provides gently used furniture and household items to families at or below the poverty level who are struggling with fire, flood, or job loss, or with domestic violence relocation. They also provide services to veterans suffering from war trauma. Sharing Connections provides their clients, who live mainly in DuPage County and Metropolitan Chicago, with items they can’t afford to purchase. On December 10, 2014, Sharing Connections received a special delivery from Mikaela Maurer, an eighth-grader at St. Mary of Gostyn Catholic School. Mikaela
recruited some friends from her eighth grade class to work with her to create eight fleece blankets for underprivileged families. The project was part of her required Sacrament of Confirmation service project. “Blankets for Babies was the name of Mikaela’s special project. Her friends who helped create the blankets included Betsy Romenesko, Emily Aument, Katie Stapleton, Melissa Bohanon, John Snyder, Joe Vogrin, Liam O’Connell, John McSweeney, Eddie Rodrigez, Alex Luka, Lauren Moore, Cassie Cahoon, Lauren Myczek, Mia Albian, and Anna Brady. St. Mary of Gostyn Catholic Parish and School was established in 1891, and currently serves over 2,800 parish families. Children have been attending St. Mary of Gostyn Catholic School for over 100 years. The school offers an excellent education in a caring and giving community, as evidenced by Mikaela Maurer’s “Blankets for Babies project. Students are well prepared for high school and college, with a strong academic, extra-curricular, and spiritual foundation. For more information, contact: St. Mary’s of Gostyn Catholic School 3-yr. There are also incidents of accidental ingestion of these medications by children, the elderly, and pets. The medications will subsequently be disposed of using the protocols followed for disposing of drugs held in evidence. There is no charge for this service.

Controversial call sinks Sentinels By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com LISLE – For better or worse, referees often opt to keep the whistles in their pocket during crunch time. And although a popular narrative is players, not officials, should determine the outcome of a game, the Westmont boys basketball team can attest that a noncall can have just as big an impact as a bad call. Trailing 60-58 in the final minute of Saturday’s rivalry matchup against Lisle, Sentinels center Marcus Mott-Larson had a golden look and was seemingly fouled while attempting the tying basket. However, none of three referees made the call, and Westmont ultimately fell 62-58. Head coach Craig Etheridge disputed the call during the game to no avail. Afterward, Etheridge remained adamant that Mott-Larson was fouled. “The defender grabbed his shooting arm when he went up,” Etheridge said. “He’s a strong kid and he fought through it, but there’s no doubt that he got hit. But the officials said it wasn’t a foul, so we have to deal with it and play through it.” Etheridge added that slow starts to the first and third quarter played just as big a role in the loss, as Lisle jumped out to a 12-2 lead and held a 14-point advantage before closing the first quarter ahead 21-11. But Westmont opened the second frame with a 13-3 run to even the score at 24. Sentinels’ sharpshooter Jack Rebellato then sunk a trey with 1:45 left in the half to give Westmont its first lead at 29-28. Rebellato finished the half with 10 points, Mott-Larson had 13 and the Sentinels went into the locker room up 34-31. “Walking into a gym with this many people, we were a little nervous to begin the game,” Etheridge said. “Once we calmed down, we started playing a little better. Jack [Rebellato] got hot, we were able to work the ball inside and develop a nice rhythm.” Lisle guard Nick Massura then swung the momentum back toward the home team, scoring eight of his 19 points in the third quarter and helping the Lions take a 44-43 lead into the final eight minutes. After erasing a seven-point deficit with three minutes left in the fourth quarter, Westmont guard Adam Doll

Trojan boys dominate for sixth straight win By DAVE OWEN msleditorial@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The pregame inductions of John Lackaff and Rebecca Rusch into the Downers Grove North Hall of Fame were just the first tributes to Trojans’ history Saturday. Hitting 10 of 11 field goal attempts in the first quarter, the Trojans’ boys basketball team rolled to a 60-33 win against Andrew to run their win streak to six games. “I’m hearing we’re the first team to do so [win six straight] since 2001,” Downers Grove North senior guard Jordon Kedrowski said. “We’re pretty excited about it. “I thought we came out in the first quarter and executed what we needed to do. [We played] A great first quarter, and it propelled us through the rest of the game.” Kedrowski led Downers North (105) with 15 points, but balance was the key as seven different Trojans scored in the first quarter, which ended with the Trojans up 24-11. “I thought we were patient, and defensively we stayed in the stance and got some stops and contested some shots,” Downers North coach Jim Thomas said. “And we got some easy runouts early that allowed us to build up a little bit of a lead.” A 3-pointer at the buzzer by Evan Jakobsze capped the near-perfect first quarter. North’s defense limited Andrew to 24 percent field-goal shooting on the night (11 of 46), including 3 of 23 in the second half. The Trojans cooled a bit from their hot start but led 37-20 at halftime and 56-28 with 2:55 left. The Trojans’ six-win streak started with the late December return from injury of 6-foot-7 football standout David Edwards. “Dave’s a huge piece,” Kedrowski

said, “and everyone’s putting personal agendas aside and we’re playing as a team. It doesn’t matter who scores. Different guys can step up each night, and everybody’s contributing.” Forward Matt Mahlke provided an instant spark off the bench Saturday with six points and a blocked shot in the decisive first quarter. Jack Fallbacher, Jakobsze (five points), Colin Kramper (four points, five rebounds) and Myles Farley (four rebounds, four assists) were other key contributors. Even with 2014 all-conference swingman Devin Blake (ankle) sidelined, the Trojans are rolling through January and hoping for more. “The six wins are nice, but that’s not our goal,” Kedrowski said. “We want to finish strong in conference because we didn’t have a good first half. We’re trying to have a better second half, pick up some key wins over good teams and then get a good seed in sectionals.”
