By RYAN TERRELL rterrell@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – Come springtime, four restaurants with new storefronts will have opened their doors along Ogden Avenue in Westmont. While construction is ongoing, Wendy’s, 320 E. Ogden Ave., Hardee’s, 180 W. Ogden Ave., and Connie’s Pizza and Potbelly Sandwich Shop, 19 W. Ogden Ave., are set to open new buildings, Westmont Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Larry Forssberg said. Wendy’s is in the midst of rebuilding its restaurant, and planned for an early winter opening but is now delayed. “It’s a bit delayed because they’re not going to be able to construct the parking lot until April,” Forssberg said. Hardee’s, meanwhile, is close to opening in a building that formerly housed an Arby’s. “They should be opening within a month,” Forssberg added. The new Connie’s Pizza and Potbelly’s Sandwich Shop, the latter of which will have a drive-thru for customers, have lengthier timelines, but are on track for a spring opening, according to Forssberg. “They just knocked down the building and are finalizing some permits right now for

“All the members of our dance staff are college educated in dance. We look at both their background and training prior to hiring. What can they bring? With whom are they currently dancing?” Haller feels that it is this criteria that separates the Pure Vibe dance program from all others. “Many dance programs employ teachers who never danced
professionally or are no longer taking dance classes. That type of teacher is hopefully giving enough technique. The problem is that these students are not learning current dance trends,” said Haller. “What choreographers are offering now will be the style for the next 20 years,” said Haller. “Hobbyist teachers may not be keeping up with current dance trends and teaching science.” “Our kids get the mix of good foundation and fun, accentuating what is going on now,’ said Center Owner Liz Haefele. “A lot of these hobbyist instructors can’t work through a whole piece unless it’s a basic class. That’s not the case with our staff.” “All of the instructors we’ve brought on have been through their own dance training; they know how to teach proper foundation and still make it fun,” Haefele. “They have a love and passion for dance that they pass on to each kid.” “Our students have this opportunity at a young age to work with professionals, which is invaluable” said Haller.

DOWNERS GROVE – The Senior Suburban Orchestra is packing up its music stands and song sheets as it prepares to move from its longtime home in Downers Grove. The only problem is, there is no new location to move into. The orchestra, which has been rehearsing and running its operations from Oak Trace Retirement Center in Downers Grove for the past 15 years, received a letter from Oak Trace management in October that because of increased enrollment at the facility, accommodations were no longer going to be available to the orchestra, said Ronald Baumgardner, who plays violin in the orchestra. “It’s been a friendly cooperation and we’re glad that we had that place as long as we did,” Baumgardner said.
Facilities that are interested in providing a new home for the orchestra may call Senior Suburban Orchestra President Bob Bahrey at 630-627-7131. For information and to see a concert schedule, visit www. seniorsuburbanorchestra. org. “I don’t expect to be homeless Jan. 1, but we are still contacting places that would like to have us.” Oak Trace is part of the Lifespace Communities family of senior retirement homes. “It was a parking and a space issue,” said Lisa Ryan, director of communications for Lifespace Communities. “They are a rather large orchestra and from a parking standpoint they were taking up all the parking in the health

I’d like to sound off for my thankfulness. I’m thankful for all the parents and students who make sacrifices to send their children to college to be doctors, engineers, scientists – everything that makes our lives easier today, especially our health. I’m thankful for the wheel – don’t know who invented it, but where would we be without it? I’m thankful for indoor plumbing and drinkable clean water. I’m thankful for air

Q: What are the dangers of chewing tobacco? A: The dangers of smoking tobacco are far better known – lung cancer most prominent among them – but chewing tobacco poses its own set of risks. Chewing tobacco goes by a variety of names: dip, spit, snuff, tobacco, chew, and so on. But by whatever name, it’s to be avoided. Smokeless tobacco, according to the National Cancer Institute, contains at least 28 chemicals known to cause cancer. Chewing tobacco is known to cause oral, pancreatic, and esophageal cancer. It may also cause or contribute to heart and gum disease, and cause pre-cancerous oral lesions. A study done a few years ago by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that tobacco chewers were 400 percent more likely to develop tooth decay than non-chewers. The habit of chewing tobacco can also leave you with some highly unattractive side issues, foul breath and discolored teeth among them. And chewing tobacco can be as addictive as smoking it. Studies have found that nicotine levels in the blood of people who chew tobacco are similar to those who smoke. Using smokeless tobacco can also diminish the senses of taste and smell, which can contribute to unhealthy eating habits. Your dentist can tell you more about the dangers of tobacco, regardless of what form it’s in.

The proposed five-story high, nearly one-block long development on the site of soon-to-be demolished Edwards House on Maple [Avenue] in Downers Grove is not meant to provide affordable housing. In fact, the developer described it as 55 luxury condos. The many other empty new condos in Downers Grove’s business district have so far had zero stimulant effect on business. Maybe the proposed 55 luxury condos will quickly sell out to new owners who are eager to patronize Downers Grove stores if given an exclusive name to reflect their luxury status. How about Denburn Towers? With a name like that, they’re as good as sold.

The only person on COD’s board who has the guts to represent taxpayers is Kathy Hamilton. She should be praised. Instead, the board censured her, adding unsubstantiated accusations of libel, slander, fraud, threats, misrepresentation, financial harm to the institution by degrading its reputation – really everything they could dream up in their thinly veiled threat to sue her for being righteous. This is bullying and intimidation and it’s disgusting. Vote out the three incumbents this spring and get Dianne McGuire and Chair Erin Birt forced out, by court order if necessary. They are a disgrace to COD and they’ve embarrassed all of us with national attention for their abuses. Let’s restore COD’s – and our own – reputation by replacing the board with more independent voices.

I read a couple weeks ago in a Sound Off about Westmont’s CUSD 201 referendum. It blew my mind that it was defeated eight months ago at 78 percent. It came back and got defeated again this month, and the school indicated it might try again. Is the referendum going to keep coming back until it wins? Enough is enough. Taxing bodies get one chance, if at all, to choke us out of more money. A referendum that is voted down should be dead upon all votes counted. If you’re sick of this, go to meetings and voice your opinion. No more re-referendum.

It seems some people do not know what the word no means. District 201 in Westmont wants to ask next April again for $26 million for the third time. This year, we the voters said
are missing the point of education for our young. When they built these buildings 35 or 40 years ago, the then board wanted a new and modern place for our children. Now with our country having

for the orchestra. While the location doesn’t need to remain in Downers Grove, there are some particulars the group requires. “We are looking for a place that has room for a 50-piece orchestra to rehearse and chairs with no arms – it’s hard to play the violin with arms on chairs,” he said. “We would need a small
storage space for some things. It would be nice not to carry the bass drum home every week.” Players hail from all over the western suburbs, including Downers Grove, Woodridge, Lisle and Bolingbrook. Downers Grove resident Florence Naprstek, 84, has been playing violin for the orchestra since its inception. “I’ve enjoyed the orchestra,” Naprstek said. “The players are from all walks of life with all kinds of experience.
We have a pretty stable roster.” While the move is looming ahead for the orchestra, the group’s concert schedule so far has not been affected, with concerts on the docket for December at various retirement centers in the area. Naprstek said she looks forward to Tuesday afternoons when the group rehearses. “We have a lot of camaraderie and it’s fun to see them every week,” she said. “It keeps us on our toes.”

But she is not just a trumpet player. She is a section leader, winner of numerous band awards for outstanding achievement including All-State honors and a member of the Leadership team. She is not just involved in clubs, but she is on the Executive Board and a VicePresident. Sarah Mogensen will leave a tremendous legacy behind her when she leaves Lisle Senior High School to major in cellular and developmental biology. We are proud to recognize her as this month as Lisle’s Suburban Life Scholar. ”

COMMUNITY VOICE Lawrence Anderson determines what the outcome will be on an individual basis. Please remember to use caution while driving. The first couple of snow events each season remind us of forgotten winter driving skills. Slow down and leave room for the car in front of you. Make sure your car’s windshield washer reservoir is filled with fluid and your wipers are in good, working condition. Brush off snow or scrape windows before leaving home. Downers Grove Township has a parking ban on all township streets after 1 inch of snowfall and lasting until cleanup operations are complete. If you park on the street during this time period, you run the risk of getting a ticket. Do not throw snow in to
the street. Many people feel that this is an acceptable way to remove snow. It is not! By throwing snow into the street you are causing a dangerous obstruction and leaving yourself open to a lawsuit. Remember, it is just as easy to throw it to the side. Remind children to stay back when the plow goes by. Also, make sure they do not play on or near piled snow in the right of way. It is sad how many children are injured when a plow pushing back snow buries a hollowed out snow tunnel. Any highway department questions can be addressed by calling our office at 630719-6625. For after-hour emergencies, please call the DuPage County Sheriff at 630-4072400. Have a Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season!

sting results in seven arrests By KELLI MURRAY kmurray@shawmedia.com
DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove Police Department worked alongside the DuPage County Metropolitan Enforcement Group in a prostitution sting that netted seven individuals in arrests last week. “It was an enforcement campaign and not based on a perceived problem or complaint,” said Lt. Mike Willison, public information officer for the Downers Grove Police Department. Willison declined to comment on how the sting operation
unfolded Nov. 13 at a location in the 3100 block of Finley Road. Individuals police said were charged with solicitation of a sexual act were: • Levy B. Ferolino, 49, 1647 Peter Lane, Romeoville • Daniel W. Gorman, 35, 16458 Dorchester Place, Lockport • David Michael Dudgeon, 37, 214 S. Park St., Westmont • David R. As the days grow shorter and the leaves fall from the trees, it is hard to believe in a few short weeks snow and sleet will replace rain and drizzle as our main weather concerns. I would like to take this time to remind our residents about a few things to remember before winter sets in. Please check and make sure your mailbox and post are in good condition. Most mailbox damage occurs as a result of old, rotting wood giving way to snow coming off the plow blade. If you are thinking about installing a new mailbox, remember a steel mailbox on a wooden 4x4 post is always your best bet. Plastic mailboxes tend to shatter in cold temperatures and also provide more surface area for the snow to hit. We repair mailboxes hit with the plows, but if the post fails because of rot or neglect, it is up to the homeowner to fix it. The Township investigates each incident and

By MATT LE CREN msleditorial@shawmedia.com EVANSTON – Downers Grove North’s girls swimming team did it again. A year after winning its first state trophy with a second-place finish at the 2013 state meet, the Trojans repeated the feat by scoring 118 points Saturday at Evanston to tie Rosary for second place. Loyola won the championship with 148 points. “I knew we could do really great things,” Downers North senior Gabriele Serniute said. “So this is so great to see what I thought we could do actually play out.” While still blessed with a strong corps of swimmers, Downers Grove North was viewed as being weaker after graduating star twins Gabby and Maddy Sims, who now swim for Harvard and Northwestern, respectively. But the Trojans didn’t buy it. The skeptics only fueled the fire of a great senior class that includes Division I recruits Serniute (Illinois) and Emily Albrecht (Ohio State) as well as University of Chicago signee Daria Wick. “I think we had more fire this year because we had so much to prove,” Serniute said. “I just feel like we had more excitement. It’s crazy.” Downers Grove North coach Judy Busse figured she had a top-five team and made a strategic decision to have her four best swimmers pass up some individual glory by doing all three relays in an effort to win another trophy. “I think we pretty much figured out early on when we made the decision to go with the relays that the purpose was to make sure that we could get to a third place,” Busse said. “In the end, [a trophy] was the goal. We just didn’t know which it was going to be.” The tactic paid off as the quartet of Albrecht, Serniute, Wick and sophomore anchor Lindsay Mathys racked up 80 points with a trio of top-four finishes.

handful of underclassmen, as five sophomores are listed on the Downers Grove South roster. Addyson Wesolowski, who joined the varsity team late last season and flashed her potential, and Kiera James are expected to log valuable minutes for the Mustangs. DGS is playing this weekend at the Lyons Township Invite before taking on Leyden on Dec. 2.
Outlook: If the Sentinels can survive the gauntlet of opponents scheduled during the beginning of the regular season, they will be in good shape to compete in the Interstate Eight Conference. After falling to St. Edward in the season opener, Westmont will take on a deep field at the Nazareth Academy-IC Thanksgiving tournament. Forwards Emma May, Annie Carlson and guard Mara Casper pace head coach Mike McCord’s high-tempo offense. Casper will run the offense and is a scoring threat from anywhere on the court. Carlson has a solid midrange jumper and is a proven lowpost player. May, who is entering just her second year of organized basketball, is looking to improve upon last year’s breakout season. Lily Lalonde and a handful of underclassmen including Sarah Schlacks, Allena Kraft, Sydney Pardy and Maria Medlicott will be fighting for starting minutes and give the Sentinels scoring depth.
CHARLIE DONOVAN Westmont Senior | Baseball Why Donovan was selected: A Michigan recruit for years, Donovan officially signed with the Wolverines on Nov. 12 in a ceremony at Westmont High School. Charlie Donovan effectively wrapped up his college recruiting when he committed to play baseball at Michigan early in his sophomore year at Westmont, but things didn’t become ironclad until he put pen to paper and officially signed with the Wolverines on Nov. 12 in a ceremony at the high school. Donovan spoke with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi about the signing event, sharing the moment with his family and his upcoming final season in a Sentinels uniform.
Rossi: What did it mean to you to have your family there? Donovan: It was awesome. It

Rossi: Will there be less nerves for you this season now that you’ve signed? Donovan: I’d say that’s accu-

ready to go. We have a good foundation to our program, so as long as we keep our minds right I think we’ll be able to do well.
