WESTMONT – Results released Friday for the 2013-14 Illinois Report Card show Community Unit School District 201 exceeded the state average in areas such as Prairie State Achievement Exam and Illinois State Achievement Test results.

According to the report card, 70 percent of students met or exceeded state standards on the ISAT and 69 percent met or exceeded on the PSAE. Both were more than 10 percentage points greater than the state average.

“Overall, we’re happy with the results from the state report card,” District 201 Superintendent Kevin Carey said.

He said the district looks at how students perform in areas of reading and math and how they compare to other schools.

Because Illinois was granted a waiver from the No Child Left Behind Act, the report cards do not include any information about making adequate yearly progress. Instead, emphasis is put on student academic growth, measuring how students did on the ISAT this year as compared to last year.

Scores are grouped into four areas: academic warning, below standards, meets standards and exceeds standards.

Each area also is divided into a lower and higher end of the scores, making eight levels.

The report card measures student academic growth by whether each student moves up or down a level.

While students in District 201 performed about the same in reading, there was an improvement on the math scores.

in post secondary education, but 49 percent are ready for college coursework, which is measured by whether students score at least a 21 on the ACT. The percentage is still above the state average of 46 percent.

DOWNERS GROVE – Fifty years of good works and projects in the Downers Grove community will be honored at the Indian Boundary YMCA Gala taking place this weekend.

The gala is an annual event that, while a celebration, also is a focus to raise money for the scholarship campaign, said Kathy Bosco, interim director of Indian Boundary YMCA. In 2013, Indian Boundary YMCA provided $603,729 in financial assistance to 2,7793 individuals, according to statistics on the website. The funds assisted individuals help to receive services membership assistance, childcare programs and day camps.

Tickets are still available for the gala, scheduled from 6 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday at Bobak’s Signature Events in Woodridge.

“It’s all to have a fun evening and to celebrate the mission of supporting the community,” she said. “Our main focus this year is honoring the Y’s Men and Women’s Club.”

John Sirovatka has been involved with the Y’s Men ‘sand Women’s Club since 1981. While he is a past board member of the club, he also is the unofficial historian of the group.

WESTMONT – The village of Westmont and Westmont Fire Department is hosting an Adopt-A-Hydrant program in an effort to make sure that fire hydrants remain visible in the winter.

“If this upcoming winter is as bad as last year, we will need help from our citizens to make sure our hydrants are snow-free,” Fire Chief Dave Weiss said in a news release.

The village is asking residents whom are interested in the program to sign up and identify which hydrant they would like to adopt. The village hopes neighborhoods will work together to make sure that all hydrants in their area are adopted, according to a news release.

Westmont library puts focus on literacy Developing residents’ literacy skills is a top priority at the Westmont Public Library.

Along with other local community organizations and social agencies, the library staff works to raise awareness of our services and programs and promote literacy initiatives throughout Westmont. Early literacy efforts in the library COMMUNITY are led by our youth services VOICE librarians who offer story Carmen times every week to expand Higgins the learning opportunities for young children. Along with an expansive picture book collection, the library has computers dedicated for preschool children with software that reinforces essential skills children will need for school.

Library staff attends school events like curriculum nights, open houses and book fairs to promote our services for youth and the various children’s programs the library offers. Classroom visits occur throughout the year at preschools, daycares and grade schools where staff can interact with students and introduce them to new books and technology tools. The connections we make with parents, students and teachers help us better understand how the library can improve our literacy efforts and motivate students to become lifelong readers.

Adult literacy is an important part of what we do at the library, particularly for those with limited English language skills. In a joint effort with People’s Resource Center, we provide adult ESL students with library tours and demonstrations of online databases that can further their English learning. We also co-host an English Conversation Group twice each month with our local partner, Literacy DuPage, that provides English language learners with an opportunity to expand their vocabulary and practice language skills.

In February 2015, Literacy DuPage will be at the library to offer an orientation for prospective volunteers who want to explore the possibility of tutoring adults who need help with reading, writing, speaking and understanding English. We will continue to expand our literacy partnerships and build new relationships with residents and organizations in the coming years.

In order for us to serve you better, we are asking Westmont residents to complete a short survey that will be delivered to every home in mid-November with the winter library newsletter. It gives residents a chance to share feedback about literacy efforts and other projects the library is planning. We hope to hear from you as we strive to improve the library experience in Westmont.

These are my suggestions for political campaigns: Limit the time to six months before elections, then the elected politician must fulfill the duties of their office and not be out campaigning. The Lombard Police Department responded to the synagogue about 4:30 p.m. Oct. 21 after receiving a 911 call regarding a disturbance, according to the release.

When officers arrived, they found White allegedly driving around the property, both on and off the pavement. They also discovered graffiti and broken windows, the release stated. Police removed White from his vehicle and took him into custody.

After the incident, police obtained a search warrant for White’s house, where they allegedly found thousands of rounds of ammunition, a shotgun, rifle and four handguns, according to the release.

White was charged with one count of hate crime, a Class 3 felony; one count of criminal damage to property, a Class 3 felony; one count of possession of a firearm without a FOID card, a Class 3 felony; and one count of institutional vandalism, a Class 2 felony, the release stated.

White’s next court appearance is Nov. 17 in front of Judge George Bakalis.

Group goes deep for wounded veterans Diveheart offers scuba diving opportunities for individuals with disabilities

By KELLI MURRAY kmurray@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – From the basics of cleanliness to soaking in hot tubs to alleviate aches, water has been known to have soothing, healing properties. But for scuba divers at Downers Grove-based Diveheart, water has a much deeper significance.

The nonprofit organization, which does not charge a fee to participants, has scores of volunteers that offer scuba diving instruction and opportunities for children, adults and veterans with disabilities.

The zero gravity of a liquid environment becomes the great equalizer as individuals find freedom when they temporarily lose their wheelchairs,

walking aids and prosthetics.

But many also find much more than they expected when they rise from the water.

U.S. Army veteran Darrell Young, 59, has been participating with Diveheart since 2006.

Young has been a paraplegic since a military vehicle accident injured his spinal cord in 1975.

Young’s reaction is exactly why founder and Downers Grove resident Jim Elliott started Diveheart in 2001.

“I dig the fact it is a fast payoff,” Elliott said. “You get them into the pool and they come out and believe in themselves.”

The journey started in the 1980s when Elliott enrolled his oldest daughter, who was born blind, in skiing lessons.

“It turned her life around,” Elliott said.

An avid skier and diver, he started teaching blind skiers in the 1980s and saw how it was affecting their lives through higher self-esteem and self-confidence. While he continued his day job working as an advertising executive at CLTV, the idea that scuba diving could similarly benefit individuals with disabilities began to take root.

“When the kids were grown and gone, I walked away from a six-figure income to start Diveheart,” Elliott said. “I don’t make a salary, I work seven days a week and I’m not afraid to take out the garbage. And it turned from something I wanted to do to build self-esteem in

Midwestern University physical therapy program director and professor Donna Cech said the occupational therapy and physical therapy students developed a short research survey to determine if diving makes a difference in the daily lives of individuals who are disabled.

“We are still analyzing the data for veterans, but I know that by meeting people, [diving] has been a very profound thing, especially if they have a physical disability,” Cech said.

The university also has done research on children and young adults with autism, age 11 to 28, who have participated in the Diveheart program.

“As a veteran, it’s really great to interact with some of the WWII vets,” Triplett said.

Triplett said in addition to the military camaraderie that is present, the veterans connect on a level outside of being a wounded veteran because they now have diving in common.

“The disability doesn’t matter,” Triplett said. “Because now he’s scuba diving and has the ability to help others.”

As the DMW team leader, Triplett maintains the diving equipment and fills the tanks, putting in about 15 volunteer hours a week. Not surprisingly, it is diving and working with the veterans that he enjoys the most.

Police arrest girls soccer supervisor in Bolingbrook

Wild Monk elevates gastropub offerings LA GRANGE – When eating out, it is a rare find that strikes the perfect balance between upscale cuisine and casual comfort, but downtown La Grange gastropub Wild Monk does just that.

I recently ventured to the restaurant and bar for dinner on a Friday evening. The dining room, which remained full throughout the night, is minimalist, yet cozy, with a wood floor and booths, metal stools and exposed-bulb light fixtures. Televisions lined the walls, playing baseball and basketball, so no one was missing the game.

We took our time placing our drink orders, perusing the expansive menu, which includes over 30 draft beers and even more bottled brews, as well as an array of signature cocktails and select wines, whiskeys, bourbons and Scotches.

Among the featured breweries are west suburban favorites BuckleDown Brewing of Lyons, Pollyanna Brewing Co. of Lemont, and Two Brothers Brewing Co. of Warrenville.

I opted for a seasonal beer with the Ten Ninety Brewing Co.’s De Ogen pumpkin ale, which was robust, spicy and aromatic. My companion went with BuckleDown’s Amarillo Clencher, which he found to be appealingly hoppy, citrusy and sweet.

We began the meal by sharing one of several available small plates. Wild Monk offers a range of interesting options, including several types of sliders. But from the moment my companion spotted them on the menu, it had to be Brussels sprouts.

Now, Brussels sprouts long have been a source of contention for the two of us – he loves them, I hate them. But at Wild Monk, we shared a rare moment of consensus on the controversial veggie.

They were delicious. Tossed in bacon jam, lemon and sea salt, they were savory, sweet and just sprouty enough.

It was creamy and hearty – the kind of sandwich you could happily eat as a latenight snack or for breakfast the next morning. A side of Cajun fries added a seasoned

kick to the plate.

For his entree, my dining companion selected the fried chicken tacos with spicy slaw, micro cilantro and chipotle aioli, which he described as light, moist and flavorful. As his side order, the plantain chips were fresh and hot, with a satisfying crunch.

Before we departed, he tried one more enticing draft beer – Pollyanna’s Dr. Pan-

gloss, which somehow pulls off the delightfully bizarre combination of being both hoppy and malty.

If you are a beer snob, Wild Monk will no doubt rise to your standards. If you aren’t a beer snob, fear not – Wild Monk may know beer, but it also knows how to create an environment everyone can enjoy.

For the Wildcats, it was just two years ago that the one-time doormat of the Big Ten put together a 5-3 mark in the Big Ten, 10-3 overall, and won its first bowl game in 64 years and just the second in its history.

Until Jan. 1, 2013, Northwestern’s only victory in a bowl game was in the 1949 Rose Bowl, a defeat of California.

Sixty-four years later to the day, the Wildcats knocked off Mississippi State 34-0 in the Gator Bowl. Yes, the same Mississippi State that was ranked No. 1 in the country for the first time in its history at 8-0 as I pen this column.

Ah, but the winds of change can blow swiftly and cruelly as they have on these two programs in recent seasons.

Since Hoke’s first year at Michigan, his Wolverines have gone just 19-16 in the past two-plus seasons and a once unthinkable 11-10 in the Big Ten. Actually, things were

worse than that as Michigan prepared to visit Northwestern. Michigan had dropped eight of its past 12 Big Ten games, a streak matched only once in the past six decades by their 4-8 Big Ten record under Rodriguez in his final two seasons.

Things have gotten so bad in Ann Arbor that Athletic Director David Brandon was forced to resign just 10 days before the Northwestern game, and Hoke is considered a real long shot to return for another season.

While the expectations for the Northwestern football program are nowhere near those of Michigan, that Gator Bowl victory was supposed to signal a new era for the Wildcats, the first of many bowl victories to come and the possibility of someday even playing in a Big

Ten title game.

Northwestern followed its 2012 breakout campaign with a 5-7 record in 2013, which included a 1-7 record in the Big Ten. The Wildcats are 3-5 this season, including 2-3 in the Big Ten following a 2-0 start to the campaign that included a 20-14 upset over 17th-ranked Wisconsin.

While Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald’s job is in nowhere near the jeopardy of Hoke’s – the advantage I guess of Northwestern football’s less lofty expectations – to say his star has fallen a bit is an understatement.

Just a season ago, Fitzgerald was one of the hottest names in college football coaching circles, rumored for the Texas job and almost every other major program gig that opened up.

Ironically, Fitzgerald was heavily rumored for the Michigan job before both the Rodriguez and Hoke hirings.

He was reportedly within a whisker of taking the Michigan job before Hoke was hired, when Northwestern stepped up with one of those “lifetime” coaching contracts every college coach covets.

Not coincidentally, I am a Michigan alumnus, and our senior Bears beat reporter, Kevin Fishbain, studied at

Northwestern. Neither of us are very happy these days, but we are forever loyal.

And therein lies the beauty of both the college and high school games, with one of the very few football assets the NFL cannot match.

These two Big Ten programs will be back. There is glory in their futures. How soon I cannot say, but it will happen, and the alumni will always be there when it does.

They are a significant part of their alumni’s lives, as are the teams of the high schools we attended and played on.

Your favorite NFL team is an attachment, at times inseparable or so it seems, but at the end of the day, they are a choice.

The schools you gave four or more years of your lives to, they and their teams are a part of who you are, the highs are that much higher and the lows that much more depressing.

Both Northwestern and Michigan alumni deserve better than what they’ve been given lately. Hopefully, the outcome of Saturday’s game is the beginning of something really good for one side or the other.

With the Cubs’ hiring of Joe Maddon dominating the sports pages, Bears-Packers week in the NFL and the IHSA state football championships moving into the second round, the biggest story in college football in Chicago was the once-mighty Michigan Wolverines visiting the Northwestern Wildcats on Saturday.

Just a couple of seasons ago, this matchup would have signaled a unique opportunity for the up-and-coming Wildcats to make a statement against one of the most powerful college football programs in the country.

But on Saturday, it was a clash between two programs heading in the same direction, most definitely the wrong direction.

Everyone who loves the game knows about Michigan football, the winningest program in the history of college football.

As recently as three seasons ago, the Wolverines were 6-2 in the Big Ten, 11 -2 overall and playing in a BCS bowl game under first-year Michigan head coach Brady Hoke, a “Michigan man” tabbed to come in and clean up the disappointment of the three-year reign of Rich Rodriguez, “the outsider” and controversial

Zeman, Westmont take step forward in program overhaul

By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – In spite of the disappointing end to the regular season, the Westmont football program is trending in the right direction.

Under second-year head coach Otto Zeman, the Sentinels improved from a dismal 1-8 team to a 4-5 contender.

This year, the coaching staff also was able to open the offensive playbook, adding more wrinkles to the uptempo offense that Zeman introduced in 2013.

Unfortunately for the Sentinels, the team again remains on the outside looking in as 3A playoff action started last Friday, extending Westmont’s streak to eight straight years without a postseason appearance.

Perhaps more agonizing was the way the regular season ended. After an emphatic 55-41 win in Week 7 against Reed-Custer, Westmont lost the final two games of the season against Manteno and Sandwich, which are both Interstate-8 Large schools.

“Coming into the season, our goal was to make the playoff and we won enough games to put ourselves in a spot to play meaningful football in the final weeks of the season,” Zeman said. “We won four games, but we still couldn’t win the big one that puts us in the

Soulier: How does it feel to record the top time at the sectional and help your team qualify for state?

Clevenger: It feels great.

Coming into the race, I knew it was a fast course, so wanted to go out, jump ahead of the pack and get a top time. Our team was on the edge of qualifying at a tough sectional, so it was nice to get that one point. It feels great, I can’t wait to go to state.

Soulier: You crossed the line more than 10 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. How did that time compare to your best time of the season?

Big plays bounce Redwings from playoffs Brad Sznajder rushes for 159 yards in defeat

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Brad Sznajder was the workhorse for Benet’s offense all season as a running back.

The Redwings saw no reason to change the script Saturday in a Class 8A first-round playoff football game against Hinsdale Central.

Unfortunately, the Redwings weren’t as successful when they didn’t give the ball to Sznajder, and the result was a 28-11 season-ending loss against the Red Devils.

“It’s a team loss. We just didn’t click on all cylinders today,” Benet head coach Pat New said. “But credit goes to Hinsdale Central. They did a great job.”

Sznajder ran for a gamehigh 159 yards and scored a touchdown, but his score didn’t come until midway through the fourth quarter after Central had built a 28-3 lead.

The Red Devils scored on their second play from scrimmage, an 80-yard hook-

up between Matt Rafferty and Thomas Ives with 7:25 left in the first quarter. Colin Goss intercepted the ball on Benet’s next play, and Rafferty and Ives connected for a 43-yard touchdown on the play after that as the hosts grabbed an early 14-0 lead.

“Spotting them two touchdowns doesn’t help. It’s a shame we couldn’t have kept it closer,” New said. “Our game is really trying to control the ball and get the ball to Brad [Sznajder] as much as possible, and when you fall behind like that, it makes it tough.”

Matt Tromp’s 33-yard field goal late in the first quarter got the Redwings (6-4) on the scoreboard, but Central led 21-3 at halftime and expanded the lead to 28-3 early in the third quarter. Two of Benet’s three possessions in the second quarter ended on Alex Byrnes’ interceptions.

The seventh-seeded Mustangs trailed 20-0 at the end of the second quarter and fell to second-seeded Simeon 28-7. Head coach Mark Molinari explained the early deficit forced the Mustangs into passing situations, and a lack of offensive fire power prevented the team from mounting a comeback.

“We probably had to throw a little more than we were used to,” Molinari said. “We did not run the ball effectively in the first half, and that put us behind the eight ball in the second half.

“I think these seniors are a group of overachievers,” New said. “I think they’re going to go on and be really successful in life. It’s that kind of group. They love to play and they love to be around each other.”

Junior Jack LaLonde crossed the line in 14:56, good for the eighth-best individual time at the Marist sectional Saturday, and earning a spot in the state final.

As a team, the Mustangs finished in ninth place out of 12 teams at the sectional and did not qualify for the state final.

Wolverines scored the game’s first points when quarterback Timon Watkins connected with Matt Fleming for a 39-yard touchdown reception.

The duo hooked up again for a 9-yard touchdown pass play in second quarter, and Watkins scampered 8 yards into the end zone as Simeon took a 20-0 lead into the locker room.

“Their quarterback was able to get out of the pocket and make some plays,” Molinari said. “They were able to connect on three big pass plays. We came after [Watkins], but he was able to get away and get rid of it.”

In the opening series of the second half, defensive back Connor Murphy thwarted a Simeon drive with an interception near the Mustangs’ goal line. Downers Grove South then marched into opposing territory but turned

the ball over on a second-andlong play.

Simeon’s Watkins converted another touchdown on the ensuing drive to make it a four possession contest, essentially putting the game out of reach for the Mustangs.

Running back Jacob Baker scored South’s lone touchdown, a 7-yard run with 3:57 left in the fourth quarter. The tailback totaled 20 carries for 86 yards and a touchdown.

Skach went 10 of 21 for 95 yards, and defensive back Conner Murphy had two interceptions for the Mustangs.

It’s the second consecutive year the Mustangs have bowed out of the first round of the 8A playoffs.

“Our road stopped a little earlier than I would have liked, but this is still a great group of seniors, and I appreciate all their hard work,” he said. “They should be proud of what they accomplished.”

Asa’s 21:22 was good for 20th, and Nash came in 24th with a time of 21:31. Brittany Eiermann followed in 29th, and Emilia Maslany was right behind in 30th. Lily Arndt (37th), Hannah Abbatacola (48th) and Halle Nash (52nd) also participated.

Sophomore Emma Moravec’s eighth-place finish at the 3A Marist sectional led the Trojans to a third-place trophy and helped the team qualify for the state final meet.
