Q&A
New village manager works his way to top lot of great people in the right place.
By RYAN TERRELL rterrell@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – Stephen May began his professional career as an engineering technician for the Village of Westmont. More than 25 years later, he now holds the village’s top administrative position. May, 54, was named village manager last month, replacing Ronald Searl, who retired earlier this year. May was hired by the Village of Westmont in 1986 and was eventually promoted to the role of assistant village engineer. In 2000, May took the village engineer position with the Village of Lemont. He then returned to Westmont in 2003 to take on the role of director of public works. May graduated from the University of Illinois Chicago with both a bachelor of science and a master of science degree in civil engineering. Westmont Suburban Life interviewed May about his new role: Ryan Terrell: After 25 years working for the village, what does it mean to you to be named village manager? Stephen May: It’s very exciting. ... I’ve spent the majority of my career here, and I know the community well. When the opportunity came up,
Terrell: How would you describe the duties and responsibilities of a village manager? May: To generalize, the elected officials are elected by the population and they set policy, make local laws and drive the big policy-related decisions that determine how the community is goinvg to grow. The village manager is the top employee – the interface between village board policy and the staff that will be administering all the work or processes. NEWS BRIEF Village to hear community input on sales tax hike
WESTMONT – The Village of Westmont is asking the community to weigh in on two potential revenue sources to fund stormwater improvements across town. The village will host two more informational meetings this month to gauge the public’s preference in pursuing revenue either through a stormwater fee to property owners or through a sales tax increase. The meetings, which will include an informational presentation and questions from the public, will help the Westmont Village Board in its decision to find a revenue source to fund the stormwater improvements, according to village spokesman Larry McIntyre. The meetings are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday and 7 p.m. Tuesday at Village Hall, 31 W. Quincy St.

Q: Are mouth guards all that important for young athletes? A: Mouth guards are indeed important for young athletes. And not just for those involved in the obvious high-contact sports like football and hockey. Experts have noted that even in a sport like gymnastics, a mouth guard is a wise precaution. Any activity that puts a young body in speedy motion puts it at risk for injury. So we’re not talking just about the varsity school athletes. We’re talking about every boy and girl involved in activities, be they recreational or competitive. And practices, of course, can be just as dangerous as games. Injuries to the mouth can be painful, in some cases leave permanent damage, and in most cases are expensive to address. Not only do mouth guards protect the young athletes’ mouth and teeth, their shock absorption capacity also makes them effective in reducing the risk of concussion. A mouth guard cushions the blow that could chip or break a tooth or cause a severe laceration to the lips or tongue. As with anything, mouth guards come in a range of styles. They can range from the custom-fitted to over-the-counter models, some of which you can mold yourself to the mouth’s alignment. The best advice is to talk with your dentist about your child’s lifestyle and whether a mouth guard is a necessary precaution.

Race for three seats on Village Board to be competitive
relief right around
By RYAN TERRELL rterrell@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – Come spring, there will be at least two new members of the Westmont Village Board. V e t e r a n trustees Sue Senicka and Bob Scott have chosen not to run for re-elec- Bob tion in the April Scott 2015 local elections. In addition to those two seats, Steve Nero’s seat on the board will expire in the Sue spring, bringing Senicka the total to three open spots. Nero said he intends to run for re-election. As of Friday, in addition to Nero, six residents had picked up election packets from Westmont Village Hall intending to run for trustee, according to Westmont Deputy Clerk Alicja Richard. If those residents want to officially become candidates, they must turn in signed petitions by Dec. 22. The five to pick up election packets from village hall were, according to the clerk’s office: Nero, Jim Lenihan, Lee Fleming, Marie Johanik-Guzzo, Linda Liddle and Frank Trout. Sources said Trout, the former Westmont fire chief, no longer intends to run for trustee despite picking up an election packet. He could not be reached for comment.

The controversial school funding bill that could have meant the loss of millions of state dollars to suburban school districts appears to be dead, according to a news release from state Rep. Ron Sandack, R-Downers Grove. The Illinois House of Representatives on Wednesday did not take a vote on Senate Bill 16 on its final day of session this term. That means the bill will be dead unless outgoing Gov. Pat Quinn brings it up in a veto session before the new Gen-
eral Assembly begins its first session Jan. 14. The proposed bill would have restructured how funding was distributed around the state based on the neediness of the student populations in each district. “This is a huge success for the suburban taxpayers who would have been fleeced by the provisions of SB16,” Sandack said. Opponents of the bill said it would unfairly take from wealthier districts without boosting overall education funding. Sandack said in his dis-

Dinner can be tough; Bridge Communities offers food for thought Do you stare into your refrigerator, wondering what to make for dinner? Do you have a hard time finding nutritious foods that your kids will actually eat? Have you found it difficult to find foods that are both healthy and budget-friendly? These are issues all families face and Bridge Communities’ families are no different. Throughout a family’s COMMUNITY time with Bridge, they learn VOICE a number of life skills; now, Lisa how to cook healthy meals for the family has been added Doyle to the list. Bridge hosts healthy eating workshops at least twice a year at Knox Presbyterian Church in Naperville, led by volunteer Suzanne Thibeault and Bridge’s community outreach coordinator, Vicky Joseph. The classes are made available by sponsorships from J.R. Albert, Families Helping Families, PhilCon and Whole Foods. More than 40 parents and children attend each session and benefit from the recipe demonstrations, tips and tastings. At our most recent class, Bridge families learned how to make cauli-rice and zucchini noodles, or “zoodles.” Registered dietitian Toni Havala also spoke to the class about weight management and met one on one with clients to help them set personal goals. Teens attend the classes with their parents while kids ages 6 to 12 attend their own Let’s Move! class, teaching about healthy food and exercise. Child care is even provided on site for kids ages 5 and younger. Parents also are taught different tactics for how to introduce unfamiliar foods to young kids. After the most recent workshop this fall, one attendee, Nydia, wrote us to say “I just wanted to share a new food we tried and liked. My oldest daughter ate it, too! She’s my cautious eater. It is spaghetti squash, onions, kale, spinach and Parmesan cheese. I also added zucchini because I had a little bit in the fridge.” Another client, Maureen, attended the workshop in April and used her newfound knowledge while interviewing for a job at a grocery store. She was immediately hired to work in the produce department, and her daughter was hired for a summer job in the bakery, too! Seeing the long-lasting effects of Bridge’s healthy eating workshops is the ultimate reward.

People’s Resource volunteer Sue Keenan of Glen Ellyn helps bag Christmas gifts Monday for needy families.
As we share our Christmas wishes with family and friends, it’s important to remember those who may not have the same support systems in place this holiday season. On Page 3, we shared information on a few organizations that can help you help the needy this Christmas season. It would be a better world if each of us dedicated a little time to helping those in need – especially this month – so please take a look and see if you can afford to lend a hand, however that may be. While the ballots are far from final, it’s looking like the village of Westmont will have a competitive race for the three open spots on the Village Board. As we told you on Page 4 this week, six residents have picked up election packets intending to run in the April election for the three open spots. We look forward to covering the races and we’re thankful the Westmont community has residents eager to run for office. David Good, managing editor dgood@shawmedia.com 630-427-6270

Caribbean flavor comes to Downers Grove area By KELLI MURRAY kmurray@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The Caribbean Corner restaurant is bringing a little tropical flavor to downtown Downers Grove. Owner Raquel Amechazzura is making Cuban, Puerto Rican and Dominican Republic cuisine with her own flair. Amechazzura was born in New York but spent her childhood between Miami and the Dominican Republic, where she grew up in the kitchens of her grandmother and mother. “I grew up in a family that cooked,” Amechazzura said. “I have always enjoyed cooking, and I got hooked into the Food Network and it rekindled a passion for cooking in me.” Amechazzura, 47, has been in the health care industry for more than 20 years, and while she liked working as a billing manager at Rush Copley in Aurora, a new direction in life seemed to be calling to her. “I have 25 years of working left,” she said. “I thought, ‘Do I really want to keep working at the hospital?’ I loved it, but the focus now is cooking.” In 2008, she could no longer ignore her culinary passion, and while keeping her full time job, Amechazzura enrolled in night classes at College of DuPage to work on obtaining her associates degree in culinary arts. Last year, she tested the restaurant waters by opening a food booth at the Aurora Farmers Market. Wheeling in coolers and freezers full of slow-roasted marinated pork, steak and other delicacies, she made Cuban sandwiches, ham croquet sandwiches and papa rellena, or stuffed potatoes, for marketgoers. “We did really well,” Amechazzura said. “People wondered where our restaurant was and I thought, ‘Oh,

The restaurant opened Sept. 26 and she became a full-time business owner and chef. She has hired two fellow COD culinary arts students to work alongside her in the restaurant as she develops and changes traditional Caribbean food into her own style, including empanadas, jibarito sandwiches with fried green plantains, soups and entrees served after 4 p.m. such as ropa vieja, bistec and lechon. “My recipes are my own creations and take on Caribbean food,” Amechazzura said. “Nothing is prepackaged. That is the beauty of cooking.”

all-year long,” Burns said. “We like to make shopping as easy as possible for our customers.” While a grand opening celebration has yet to be set, Burns said that the quiet opening has resulted in some positive customer feedback. “We appreciate both the new customers who have been coming in the last few weeks as well as the customers who were great supporters of the previous store and coming to our shop,” Burns said. “We have had tremendous support from customers from Downers Grove and the surrounding towns.” Burns decided the best course to staff the shop was to seek out individuals who are savvy in the specialty toy industry, and ended up hiring several of her former colleagues. “The employees really know the merchandise we carry,” Burns said. “I was able to hire back five employees who, like myself, worked for the previous owners.” The knowledge these seasoned employees have and can pass on to customers is something that first-time employees would take a long time to develop, she added. Downers Grove resident and My Special Toy Store Assistant Manager Lindsay Waszak was one staffer who Burns rehired. “I felt that we were family and it’s nice that we are all together again,” Waszak said. “It’s fun because I came into it already knowing what to expect because of my experience. We are around toys all days so it’s more fun than anything.”

DOWNERS GROVE – Shoppers on the hunt for toys have a new location to peruse for that just-right present this holiday season. My Special Toy Store opened Nov. 12 at 5137 Main St. Kathy Burns was a merchandise buyer for 11 years at My Favorite Toy Store, located in the same spot before it closed a year ago, but there is no connection with the old store at all, she said. The previous store closed both its Downers Grove and Elmhurst locations abruptly last December. “It’s a totally new store,” Burns said, adding that the merchandise is also different and now caters to children from infants to pre-teens. Burns started thinking about opening her own store this past June, and once she made up her mind, she didn’t look back. Rehabbing the space started the day after the lease agreement was signed in August, she said. “I was involved in the specialty toy business for 11 years and thought I was good at what I was doing and I wanted to move forward to pursue that passion again,” Burns said. “When I started thinking about opening my own store I knew that I wanted it to be in downtown Downers Grove.” As a specialty toy store, it sets her shop apart from other retailers, Burns said. “The specialty market is a marketplace where manufacturers and companies sell to specialty stores as opposed to big box stores,” Burns said. “Very little of what you find here is in the big box stores.” Divided into sections, the shop offers preschool, educational, sports and science, among other offerings, Burns said. The merchandise varies from stuffed animal purses to puzzles and dancing water speakers that incorporate LED lights that move to the beat of music. One additional perk the shop offers that most big box stores do not is free gift wrapping. “It’s a 24/7 service we offer

Area woman’s photo wins second place in national contest By AMANDA FRAZER msleditorial@shawmedia.com WOODRIDGE – As the hours passed on a cold, bleak Alaskan summer day, one Woodridge resident patiently observed the behavior of a female brown bear and her three cubs until a special moment occurred. As the cubs grew tired and fell peacefully asleep on one another, Ursula Dubrick was able to capture a photograph that won second place in the Baby Animal category of the 44th annual National Wildlife Photo Contest. The contest is hosted by the National Wildlife Federation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting America’s wildlife. “I was overjoyed. It’s a great honor, actually,” Dubrick said of her photograph being one of the winners selected from more than 29,000 entries. Dubrick won $250 and a spot for her photo in the December/January 2015 edition of National Wildlife magazine. Although Dubrick has earned honorable mentions and has been a finalist in previous years, this is the first award she has won through the magazine contest. Dubrick admitted it was difficult to take her eyes off the bears during the moment she was able to capture her photograph at Lake Clark National Park & Preserve. “They got tired and huddled and three heads went down,”

Woodridge resident Ursula Dubrick took this photo in the mudflats in Alaska’s Lake Clark National Park. The photo won a National Wildlife Magazine photo contest in the Baby Animals category. Dubrick said. “I just wanted to watch them and pick them up and hug them – I didn’t want to photograph – but those are things you can’t do and I kept the shutter clicking and, out of 100 photos, this was the best I think.” Dubrick grew up in northwest Indiana, moved to Florida for nine years and then moved to Woodridge in April. In Florida, she retired from her job with the government in 2008 and, with the additional time on her hands, decided to pursue her lifelong interest in photography and love for wildlife. “I decided to go out and get a camera and lenses,” Dubrick said. “Florida is an amazing
place for wildlife.” Dubrick said she owns a 500mm lens, which allows her to capture close-ups of animals without intruding within their natural habitats or putting herself in danger. The mostly self-taught photographer said she focuses her technique on observing animals and taking observational behavioral photographs. “Whether it’s the sandhill crane teaching its baby to feed itself or the great blue heron bringing in nesting materials and its mate taking the sticks, as long as the photographs show behavioral interaction, it makes them interesting, especially if there are babies of some kind,” Dubrick said.
Dubrick said while living in Florida she photographed a wide variety of birds, including herons and egrets, and other wildlife, such as sea turtles. In addition to traveling to Alaska, Dubrick also has photographed wildlife in Africa and India with travel photography groups. In Africa, she was able to photograph lions, zebra, elephants, monkeys, hippos, birds, jackals and hyenas. Her favorite experience was witnessing two adult female lions and five cubs interacting with one another. In India, Dubrick was able to photograph Bengal tigers in Bandhavgarh National Park. “We got out of our Jeep and got close to one resting under the vegetation,” Dubrick recalls. “The young tiger was about 100 feet away and was just laying there and allowed us to photograph before taking off.” Dubrick has won numerous other awards for her photography. Her photo of two great blue heron placed second in the 2014 Indian River Lagoon Photo Competition, and has had numerous photos featured in wildlife calendars. In the future, Dubrick hopes to travel more, particularly to South America and to Canada to photograph polar bears. For her next trip, she will venture to LeClaire, Iowa, to photograph bald eagles. Local community discusses future facilities plan By KELLI MURRAY kmurray@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – A leaking skylight and space constraints in the Downers Grove Police Station, as well as inefficient and outdated HVAC systems for both Village Hall and the police station were issues pointed out to residents during a facilities tour prior to Thursday night’s Town Hall meeting. The special meeting was designed to provide information to residents on the proposed facilities project that is projected to cost $52 million. Downers Grove resident Joe Phillips was wary of the proposed cost of the plan. “They need to look at all options and have the costs justified,” Phillips said. The village maintains that the existing Village Hall, police station and fleet maintenance facility, all located downtown at the Civic Center site, are outdated or inadequate buildings that offer mul-
“We’ve been looking at this issue for a long time. That study came up with a set of plans with new police station, new Village Hall, but then the great recession put everything on hold. We are now forced to look at the issue with a fresh set of eyes.” Martin Tully Downers Grove mayor
tiple deficiencies, including outdated building systems, operational challenges, and an undesirable location. “We’ve been looking at this issue for a long time,” Mayor Martin Tully said, adding that a study was conducted in 2007 with a recommendation that something needed to be done. “That study came up with a set of plans with new police station, new Village Hall, but then the great recession put everything on hold. We are now forced to look at the issue with a fresh set of eyes.” Deputy Village Manager Mike Baker presented a slide-
show detailing the breakdown of the two-phase project and cost estimate of the facilities plan. The largest expenditure would be the development of the 9.8-acre parcel on the south side of Ogden Avenue and Lacey Road at an estimated cost of $38 million. Sources of funding are pegged to come from drug seizure funds, the Ogden Avenue TIF, existing revenues and grants. Deputy Chief Kurt Bluder said that the station is cramped and that a juvenile holding cell has been turned into an evidence room. Lack of

privacy was another concern, Bluder said. “Detectives can hear conversations across the room,” Bluder said. The Ogden Avenue and Lacey Road site currently is proposed to house a new, 90,000-square-foot building for the police station, fleet maintenance facility and Fire Station No. 1, relocated from the Ellsworth Business Park. Private commercial development facing Ogden Avenue is also part of the site plan, and a new signal light would be installed at the location for better traffic flow. Many of the residents that turned out at the Thursday meeting questioned the location of the new site due to environmental clean-up cost concerns stemming from the former salvage yard at the location. “There have been extensive studies at Ogden and Lacey that were reviewed by the Illinois EPA,” Village Manager Dave Fielding said. “The plan is as certain as you can get. We think we’ve minimized the risk as much as possible.” Fielding added that grants from the EPA are also a source to help clean up the site.
Phase two of the facilities plan is the redevelopment of the Civic Center site budgeted at $14 million. A new, approximately 40,000-square-foot new village hall would be built on one half acre of the current parcel. The remainder of the 8-acre parcel would be sold to a developer to build a 200unit, residential complex for $4 million, with $10 million subsequent property tax revenue from the development as a source of funding. Several residents voiced support for an advisory referendum, with one resident collecting signatures on a petition for a ballot measure, but the majority of the council members do not believe a referendum is necessary. “The seven of us decided that it wasn’t something we were interested in doing,” Commissioner Geoff Neustadt said. “I feel like we’ve been elected to make the hard decisions. Having home rule allows us to make discretionary decisions.” Commissioner David Olsen disagreed and has attempted to move the item to referendum but failed to get council support. “One reason to go to an advisory non-binding referendum is to hear what the voters have to say,” Olsen said. “Are we required to do it? No.” No final decision has been made on the facilities plan, with most council members still interested in exploring the proposal. “I think this is the right course, but there is a lot of information to look at,” Commissioner Becky Rheintgen said.

• Thousands of paper and plastic shopping bags end up in landfills after the holiday season. Reusable cloth bags can limit the amount of bags tossed away, and users of plastic bags can recycle those bags at appropriate receptacles. • Four million tons of waste is attributed to shopping bags and wrapping paper. Recycling paper or looking for reusable items in which to wrap gifts can cut down on paper waste. • Approximately 33 million live trees are cut down and sold in North America each year for Christmas. If you use a live tree, be sure to recycle it so it can be turned into mulch instead of being sent to a landfill. Otherwise, consider buying a potted tree and planting it after the holidays. • Nearly 2.65 billion Christmas cards are sold and exchanged each year in the United States alone. This many cards can fill a football field 10 stories high. One less card sent per person can save roughly 50,000 cubic yards of paper. Electronic greetings are another way to save paper. • If everyone in Canada wrapped just three gifts in reused paper or gift bags, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 hockey rinks.

hanukah, Christmas and New Year’s Eve are right around the corner. That means neighborhoods, buildings and stores will soon be awash in holiday splendor. Social schedules will be full, and men and women everywhere will shuffle to complete their holiday shopping. Grab bags are a staple of this season of giving, and the following are a few dos and don’ts to ensure participation in gift exchanges is fun and friendly for all involved. ••• DO set a gift amount limit. Holiday grab bags are more about having fun and exchanging a little something with friends and family members than walking away with amazing prizes. Establish a spending limit so everyone receives a gift of roughly the same value and no one feels slighted or left out. ••• DON’T exceed the spending limit. It can be tempting to spend more to make your gift appear more impressive. But overspending defeats the purpose of the gift exchange. Grab bags typically are anonymous, so being overly generous will not win you any style points. ••• DO make it a game. Tossing gifts in a bag only to have others reach in and grab one is certainly effective. But the concept can be even more fun if you make a game out of it. Try passing wrapped gifts around in a circle to a holiday song. When the music stops, the gift you are holding is the one you open. Experiment with your own variations to make gift exchanges more fun. ••• DON’T let anyone see the gift you bring. The idea is to keep things as secretive as possible so as not to sway the selection of presents. ••• DO ensure your gift is unisex. Unless you know specifically that only men or women will be opening the presents, select items that will appeal to both genders. Food, gift cards, music, or home staples make great grab bag gifts. ••• DON’T forget to consider ages as well. Gift exchanges may include both children and adults, so include gifts that appeal to all ages when necessary. When the exchange has ended, allow participants to swap gifts if they want to. ••• DO expect some grab bag gifts to be gag gifts. Such gifts are entertaining and may make up the majority of the grab bag gifts. Keep your sense of humor and you’re likely to enjoy grab bags a lot more. ••• DON’T regift items to use as grab bag picks. Should the person who gave you the gift participate in the grab bag, he or she can trace that gift back to you and may be offended. ••• DO make sure everyone is aware that there will be a grab bag gift exchange, as there needs to be an equal number of gifts to participants so everyone gets a treat. Hosts may want to have a few extra wrapped gifts around just in case someone forgets to bring their contribution. ••• Gift exchanges in the form of grab bags, auctions, swaps, and other games make for fun additions to holiday festivities. They also can be a part of any family or friends gathering to add excitement and entertainment to the occasion.

ny time is a great time for families to talk to their children about giving back and helping those who are less fortunate. Whether you're celebrating a holiday, special occasion, or still haven't figured out your 2015 resolution, make giving back part of the conversation - from making financial donations to volunteering time and energy, giving can be easy and enjoyable. As parents who want your children to be well-rounded, caring citizens, leading by example is important. Getting involved in a giving-back project as a family can help your kids learn good values. Here are some great projects your family can take on together: Organize a food drive - The winter months can be tough on food pantries. If your children are involved in a club or organization, help them organize a food drive with their peers. You can even ask your neighbors to get involved. Have your children draft a letter that will inform the neighbors about what you're doing, when you'll be picking up food, and what kinds of food are most needed by the pantry. Be sure to encourage your children to thank everyone who donates food.
1
Volunteer - There are so many ways your children can put their efforts toward volunteering. For older children who are able to shovel snow, rake leaves or mow lawns, have them connect with a neighbor or family friend who is housebound or on vacation. Younger children can help with keeping the community clean, too. Head out to a park to pick up litter and recycle cans and plastic bottles. Or connect with a nursing home and ask if there is a resident who would like a weekly visit; maybe they would enjoy a chance to play board or card games with your children.
2
Vitamin A is distributed through Vitamin Angels’ partners to Mayan families. More on Ana Estela’s story can be found at www.vitaminangels.org/gift. Get crafty - Let your children's talents turn into something good for others. For example, they can create holiday cards to be delivered to service members while they are overseas and away from their friends and family. The same kinds of cards can also be sent to patients who need some cheering up while in the hospital. If your children knit or sew, have them make blankets, scarves, hats and mittens for people who might need some warmer clothing.
4
Make giving relatable, measureable and meaningful Explain to your children the benefits of donating money to highly reputable organizations (check Charity Navigator ratings to ensure your dollars will be responsibly managed) that help others in need, especially organizations that help children. For example, Vitamin Angels helps support children who don't have the opportunity to eat a variety of healthy, nutritious foods their bodies need. Clean out the closet - Before or after a big gift-giving holiday, An estimated 190 million children under the age of 5 suffer from vitamin-A deficiency, cleaning the house and eliminating some of the toys is a high priority. Ask which can lead to weakened immune systems, childhood blindness and even death. With your children to go through the clothes they've outgrown and the toys they Vitamin Angels, a $.25 donation can help provide a child in need the vitamin A he or she no longer play with. They can fill a box with the items they no longer need requires to help prevent vitamin-A deficiency for one year. One quarter, one child. Helpful tips when shopping for tech gifts for the holidays Tablets
Starting at
$69
Available in various designs, sizes and operating systems, tablets offer users all-day battery life, lightning-fast Web browsing and performance, and responsive applications. These devices are good for multitaskers of all ages, especially kids and teens. The KurioTab, for example, is ideal for children because it is packed with popular apps, games and e-books not to mention equipped with a protective covering for accidental slips. This tablet also makes it easy for parents to apply Web browser filters to ensure their kids enjoy a safe browsing experience.
Portable All-in-Ones
Portable all-in-one systems like the Dell XPS 18 combine the performance of a PC with the flexibility of a tablet, meaning your loved one will be able to enjoy the device throughout the home thanks to the battery housed behind the screen. Equipped with fun apps like Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy, these devices can redefine family and friend game night, or their flat screen can be used to watch a movie at home or in a college dorm.
2 in 1s
2 in 1 devices, which are a laptop and tablet in one device, are perfect for people who like to keep their options open. A 2 in 1 device can function as a tablet when you want to relax and be entertained or it can be used as a laptop when a project must be finished. With a longer battery life, 2 in 1s are a great option for busy teens, college students or adults who are always on-the-go. The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is built for productivity and has a great detachable keyboard so it’s ideal for any age that needs a computing device for daily school or work assignments.
Chromebooks
Chromebooks are perfect for students and educators. Offering a smooth, efficient and affordable Web browsing experience to consumers, Chromebook boots up in seconds and updates automatically. That means you’ll always enjoy a first-rate Internet experience and you don’t have to worry about your machine slowing you down.
Smartphones
Let’s face it: Most people are addicted to their tablets and smartphones. So how can you go wrong by giving one that is the best of both worlds to your loved one this holiday season? The ASUS PadFone X mini is the first smartphone in the U.S. with an Intel processor and LTE solution that transforms from a 4.5-inch smartphone into a 7-inch tablet when docked into the tablet docking station, offering consumers the benefits of two devices for less than $200. When looking for a smartphone for a holiday gift, look for one that is blazing fast and has a long battery life like the ASUS PadFone X mini, which also runs on Android with thousands of apps that can meet just about anyone’s needs.

Step 2: Lock it up Whether you are home, running errands or away on vacation, take care to close and lock all doors and windows. Remember to set alarms, too. “Given that most people have extra valuables and gifts in their homes during this time, it’s a good idea to practice home safety whether you’re there or not,” says Leman. Leman adds that a simple dowel placed in a sliding glass door or window can be an inexpensive way to secure vulnerable entrance points. “Alarms or closed circuit video surveillance systems are a great and inexpensive way to protect your home,” he adds.

Step 4: Dispose smartly It’s best not to alert strangers to the new 70-inch flat screen in your home by leaving the box on the curb for refuse pickup. “When it comes to big-ticket items and valuables, boxes on the curb can be an advertisement for the new valuables in your home,” cautions Leman. “Take the time to break down boxes and recycle them or put them on the curb over time and inconspicuously,” he says.

Step 5: Be a tricky traveler Be proactive about home safety if you have holiday travel plans. Never let mail or newspapers pile up at your home, as it is an instant indicator you are not there. Have a neighbor collect mail and newspapers or have your service stopped by calling the post office and newspaper provider. “Set your lights and television on timers,” suggests Leman, who also advises homeowners to have a neighbor park their car in your driveway intermittently to keep up the appearance that someone is coming and going.

Step 3: Light the night A well-lit and well-groomed home provides an important measure of safety. “The better the lighting in your home and yard, the fewer places there are for criminals to lurk,” says Leman. USAA, a leading provider of banking, insurance and investment services to the military community, recommends the 3 foot/6 foot rule: trim branches to 6 feet off the ground and shrubs down to 3 feet to minimize hiding places for burglars.

hen you think of the holidays, celebrations, presents and friends likely come to mind - not crime. Unfortunately, burglaries increase at this time of year, and your home could be a target. With a few simple safety precautions, you can protect your property, your family and your valuables now and well into the new year. “Taking steps to protect your home during the holidays isn’t radically different from what most people should be doing the rest of the year,” says Thomas Leman, a retired 27-year veteran of the police force and criminal justice professor at Argosy University Online. “The problem is that most people get lured into a false sense of security and tend to let their guard down, thinking that crime won’t happen to them.” TAKE PRECAUTIONS TODAY TO PROTECT YOUR HOME AND DETER CRIMINALS. CONSIDER THESE FIVE SIMPLE STEPS: Step 1: Decorate with care When it comes to holiday decorations, modesty is definitely the best policy, says Leman. “While you may love the look of a Christmas tree in your front window, expensive decorations on display can be a signal that there are valuables inside your home worth a criminal’s time. Gifts under the tree are the most blatant of these displays and are a welcome invitation for thieves.” Leaving gifts tucked away until the last possible minute is a quick and easy safety precaution. If you must display presents, make sure they are out of sight from any windows or doorways.

eart disease and stroke remain the two top killers of Americans, according to the American Heart Association. Some research shows that heart-related deaths increase by 5 percent during the holidays, no matter where you live, and more cardiac deaths occur on Christmas and New Year’s day than on any other days of the year, according to a study by the University of California, San Diego and Tufts University School of Medicine published in the journal Circulation. Cardiovascular-related incidents increase in winter for a number of reasons, including drops in temperature that constrict blood vessels, irregular workout routines, poor stress management and changing eating habits. “We tend to eat significantly more inflammation-promoting foods in the winter,” says Dr. Michael Roizen, founder of RealAge.com. “The combination of poor diet and other stressors can trigger plaque ruptures and cause chunks of fatty deposits lining arteries to enter the bloodstream, potentially leading to more risk for heart attack and stroke.” Here are suggestions for keeping your heart healthy this winter: Maintain a healthy diet Less than 1 percent of adults meet the American Heart Association’s definition for an “Ideal Healthy Diet,” which means the majority of people need to make some smarter nutrition decisions. Don’t overindulge on artery-clogging dishes, and instead focus on foods that contain key heart health nutrients, including: * Omega-3s DHA and EPA, found in fatty fish like salmon and sardines, are essential fatty acids which have been shown to support healthy blood pressure and brain function. GOED (the Global Organization for EPA and DHA omega-3) recommends getting 250-500mg of EPA and DHA per day through foods and supplements. * Vitamin D, found in mushrooms and added to soy and almond milks, has been shown to support heart health. Some research indicates that a vitamin D deficiency may be a risk factor for heart attacks, congestive heart failure, peripheral arterial disease and high blood pressure. Sunlight is the best natural source for vitamin D, but since people spend more time indoors during the winter, add foods that pack an added vitamin D punch, like soy milk fortified with the nutrient to the grocery list. * Beta-glucan, found in oats, is a plant-based sugar known to lower absorption of cholesterol, which may reduce the risk of heart disease. Research shows that consuming approximately 3mg per day of oat beta-glucan has a statistically significant cholesterol lowering effect. * For more information about nutrition for heart health, visit vitaminsinmotion.com. Even if you do follow a healthy diet, a busy lifestyle can make it difficult to obtain the recommended amounts of vitamins and minerals from food alone. One simple way to enhance your diet is to look for foods fortified with key nutrients and nutritional supplements. Stay active Regular exercise has a favorable effect on many of the established risk factors for cardiovascular disease. For example, exercise promotes weight reduction and can help reduce blood pressure. Take the dog on a walk or challenge your kids to a snowball fight. Make it fun, but make sure it happens. Keep warm If you’re going outdoors in the cold, keep your mouth covered with a scarf so warm air hits your lungs first when you breathe in. For those who are traveling from a warm to a cold climate, pack warm gear, because some research suggests a dip in temperature from what you’re used to may increase your risk for stroke by 7 percent, and heart attack by 12 percent. Relax Focus on the pleasures of the holiday season, like gift-giving, family time and volunteering. Giving and relaxation can benefit stress levels. Finally, sticking to your normal sleep schedule is very important.

T
he holiday season is full of joy. But in the midst of decorating and socializing, pet owners may overlook the needs of their pets. Hectic schedules and homes full of unusual décor can throw pets off-kilter. No pet owner wants their pet to feel uncomfortable or suffer any injuries, so it’s important that owners exercise caution with the following items come the holiday season. • Bones: Is turkey on the menu for the family feast? If so, resist the urge to toss some bones and scraps to dogs or cats. Small bones or bone chips can become lodged in the digestive tracts of pets and cause serious injury. If you want to provide your pet with a holiday treat, choose a safer, store-bought bone. • Aromatic oils: The holidays are not the same without the familiar scent of mint, cinnamon or pine. Some people resort to scented candles or aromatherapy oils to create the perfect holiday ambiance. But some synthetic aromas or even natural extracts can be toxic to cats and dogs. Stick to nontoxic items and keep them well out of the pet’s reach. • Chocolate and other sweets: An abundance of treats seems to be par for the course during the holiday season. Dogs should avoid all chocolate, but dark chocolate poses a particularly serious threat. Chocolate can cause agitation, elevated heart rate, diarrhea, vomiting, seizures, and even death. In addition, candy or cookies sweetened with the artificial sweetener xylitol can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure for dogs. • Pine needles and trees: When ingested, pine needles can puncture the intestines of pets. In search of an easy drink, dogs and cats may be drawn to the fresh water reservoir of live trees, increasing the likelihood that they knock over a Christmas tree, injuring themselves and causing damage around the house. Trees should be properly secured, and fallen needles should be promptly discarded. • Tinsel and decorations: Skip the tinsel if you have a cat. Felines are likely to mistake tinsel for a toy. Eating tinsel can cause severe damage to a cat’s intestinal tract, as it may get caught in the stomach while the rest of it continues to pass through the intestines. Tinsel also may wrap around the tongue, increasing the cat’s risk of choking. Ornaments also are tempting playthings. Cats may pounce on glass ornaments, breaking them and suffering injury. Keep pets in mind when selecting tree ornaments, and opt for unbreakable ornaments when possible. • Electrical cords: The American Animal Hospital Association says holiday lights mean more electrical cords for kittens and puppies to chew. Secure all cords and keep them out of reach of pets. • Candles: The subtle flicker of a lit candle can add ambiance to a space. But all it takes is the swish of a tail or the pat of a paw to knock over a candle and spark a fire. Never leave lit candles unattended. If you have boisterous pets, opt for LED simulated candles instead. • Alcohol: Spirits are sometimes a part of celebrations, but alcoholic beverages should be kept out of reach of pets. Alcohol suppresses the immune system, and it can result in significant health issues for pets who consume it. The holiday season is a time for celebration. Ensure that these festivities are as safe for pets as they are enjoyable.

hough there is no official data that declares the best-selling holiday toy for children of all-time, it’s fair to assume the lovable “Sesame Street figure Elmo is high on the list of most popular holiday toys. Much of that popularity can be traced to the introduction of Tickle Me Elmo in 1996. Though not the first Elmo doll, Tickle Me Elmo became the must-have gift of 1996, when parents searched far and wide for the doll that laughed when users tickled its stomach. During the holiday season of 1996, many people paid far beyond market price just so their children could wake up on Christmas or Chanukah and have a Tickle Me Elmo doll to call their own. Since 1996, Elmo has been reincarnated many times over, and each Elmo doll seems to inspire its own craze come the holiday season. Released in 1998, Walk ‘N’ Talk Elmo was a popular children’s gift, as was Rock ‘N’ Roll Elmo (1999), Tickle Me Elmo Surprise (2001), Chicken Dance Elmo (2002), and SHOUT Elmo (2005). In 2006, MattelŽ, the company that produces the Elmo dolls, announced a special commemorative Elmo to mark the 10-year anniversary of the introduction of Tickle Me Elmo. That, too, sparked a buying frenzy, as some reports indicated private sellers were selling the latest Elmo, known as TMX Elmo, for thousands of dollars.

WESTMONT – Westmont girls basketball coach Mike McCord believes his team is learning from early season hardships. The Sentinels’ opened the 2013-14 season with a 46-20 nonconference loss to St. Edward on Nov. 18. The road didn’t get any easier as the girls posted just one victory at the IC Thanksgiving Tournament. “Our first game against St. Edward’s was not pretty,” McCord said. “But you learn from those losses and try to build off of them. We talk every day about improving and getting better, not winning and losing. I think we are improving and it’s starting to show on the court. “We do not want to peak in December, we want to peak in February and play our best basketball going into the playoffs.” There is no doubt the Sentinels are playing better basketball since the IC tournament. Westmont began Interstate-8 conference play with a 40-30 victory against Streator on Dec. 1. The Sentinels followed it up with a 60-52 road victory against Reed Custer on Dec. 4. The girls returned home Monday to play I-8 foe Herscher. Despite being undersized at every position, the Sentinels came out swinging, quickly erasing an early deficit to take a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Behind eight first-half points from Mara Casper and six first-half points from Annie Carlson, Westmont took a 13-11 lead into the locker room. “I think our execution in the first half was pretty good,” McCord said. “They had a height advantage, but we did a good job of moving the ball around the perimeter and taking good shots.” But the Sentinels’ could not withstand a second-half run by the Herscher girls, who seized a 32-30 lead midway through

Casper finished with 15 points while Carlson added 12 and Emma May added six points before fouling out. “Going forward, we need to stay out of foul trouble, which can be difficult because we like to play aggressive, on-the-ball defense,” McCord said. “But I like where we are at as a team right now.”
