WESTMONT – The Westmont Village Board is expected to choose one of two proposed funding mechanisms for much-needed stormwater improvements in town at next month’s board meeting. Ultimately, though, Westmont voters will have the final say as to whether the village should receive additional funding for stormwater projects. During the Jan. 8 meeting, the board is expected to vote to place a referendum question on the April 7 election ballots. Depending on the board’s direction Jan. 8, the referendum question will either ask voters to approve a sales tax increase or to enact a monthly stormwater utility fee for property owners. Village officials say either option would help fund an estimated $30 million in much-needed stormwater projects. “[Flooding] is not a Westmont-unique issue ... this has been challenging for all of Illinois,” Larry McIntyre, communications director for the village of Westmont, said during a presentation at Thursday’s board meeting. Efforts to find “a dedicated and ongoing revenue source” for stormwater projects were

launched shortly after historic flooding in April 2013, McIntyre explained.
Pros & cons
During the last month, the village has hosted a handful of community meetings to educate the public on two funding options and gauge the public’s opinion on which to pursue. During Thursday’s meeting, Mayor Ron Gunter said “60 to 70 percent” of audience members at the informational meetings have been outspoken regarding their support for a sales tax rather than a utility fee. The current proposal suggests a 1 percent sales tax hike, though officials also discussed lowering that to a half-percent increase to lighten the impact

Development and other factors have affected weather patterns n INHERITED INFRASTRUCTURE: Various infrastructure were in place prior to being annexed to community on local businesses. Among the “pros” presented to the board for this option was that a sales tax hike would be easier and less time-consuming for staff to implement as opposed to the more complex stormwater fee. It would also include contributions from nonresidents who shop or buy goods in town, officials said. “Cons” presented included a potentially inconsistent revenue flow. A 1 percent sales tax hike would also be the second tax increase handed down to Westmont restaurants in two years. In June 2013, the Westmont Village Board enacted a 1.5 percent eating tax for “places of eating.” The latter “con” also brought up the issue of remaining competitive with businesses in neighboring towns.
Nonprofit protest
A stormwater fee would also introduce a new monthly cost to local nonprofits. Currently, stormwater infrastructure is funded through property taxes. Nonprofits, including churches and schools, are exempt from paying property taxes. That situation presented problems in nearby Downers Grove, which enacted its own stormwater utility fee in January 2013. In the months that followed, local church leaders pleaded with Downers Grove officials to exempt nonprofits from the fee, arguing that the new monthly costs – on average, about $160 – detracted from their charitable efforts. Meanwhile, a stormwater utility fee would present a “fair method” of determining funding for stormwater projects, as property owners in Westmont would be charged a monthly fee that’s based on the amount of impervious land on their property, officials have said. It would also allow for a more stable revenue stream, according to Thursday’s presentation. “Cons” presented for the stormwater fee included that it would be a more complex and tedious task for village staff, as it would require ongoing efforts and extensive hours from village staff to run the program.

Continued from page 2 protests were successful, as the village of Downers Grove ended up exempting nonprofits from the fee in November. Westmont officials said a stormwater utility fee would present a cost of about $7 to $13 a month for owners of single-family residences. The cost would vary greatly for business owners and nonprofits, as the fee is based on the amount of impervious land on the property. For example, the village said a stormwater fee would potentially charge roughly $2,000 a month to the owners of the Westmont Jewel-Osco, while Holy Trinity Church and Bethel Lutheran Church would be potentially be charged $289 and $112, respectively, a month. There is one remaining community meeting regarding the two proposals before the village board zeroes in on one option. That meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Village Hall, 31 W. Quincy St.
Ask Dr. Webster
ORAL MUCOSA Q: What is oral mucosa? A: The soft flesh that lines the inside of a healthy mouth is called oral mucosa. There are actually three types of oral mucosa. Lining mucosa covers the inside of the cheeks, the lips, the soft palate, and the area under the tongue. Specialized, or gustatory, mucosa covers the top of the tongue. Your taste buds are a form of oral mucosa. A third, hardier type, that can stand up to the rigors of chewing, covers the gum and the hard palate. Oral mucosa has two layers of tissue. The top layer is called the epithelium. Like other layers of the body’s outer skin, the epithelium is designed to be in contact with the environment. Under the epithelium is a dense layer of connective tissue that holds nerves and blood vessels. A special part of the oral mucosa is called the gingiva. Gingival tissue is what makes up the gums. It is bound firmly to the base of the teeth. Along with the underlying jaw bone, gingival tissue is what supports the teeth. The tight fit of the gums against the teeth helps prevent the infiltration of bacteria. Depending on a person’s skin color, the oral mucosa can range from dark pink to brown. Extremely pale mucosa can be a sign of anemia, while dark or patchy mucosa may indicate some other medical condition. Talk with your dentist about ways to keep your oral mucosa and the rest of your mouth healthy.

Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka died early Dec. 10 of complications from a stroke suffered the day before, according to spokesman Brad Hahn. Topinka was 70 years old. Topinka of Riverside served as state comptroller for four years and was re-elected in November for a second fouryear term. Topinka went to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn the morning of Dec. 9 after feeling discomfort, according to the release. She underwent testing for a possible stroke and was under observation the morning of Dec. 10 when she lost consciousness. She was pronounced dead shortly after 2 a.m. State Rep. Ron Sandack was emotional as he spoke about Topinka’s passing, according to a news release. “I read about it this morning early and was obviously saddened,” Sandack said. “It’s hard. Judy was a trailblazer, a pioneer and really a one-of-a kind personality.”

State Rep. Ron Sandack, R-Downers Grove (left), and daughter, Clare (right), join Judy Baar Topinka in August at the Illinois State Fair. Sandack met Topinka in 2010 in the Illinois General Assembly and remembered how she made him feel welcome. “She welcomed me and was always very accessible. I really got to know her,” Sandack said. “She and I happened to see the same viewpoint on same-sex marriage and she was extremely supportive of me.” Sandack said Topinka was unafraid to be brutally honest. “She was someone of enormous moxie. It was one of her best attributes,” Sandack said. “There was no beating around the bush. She was a true public servant.”
Sandack said Topinka was a straight shooter when it came to the state’s financial condition and that the state, collectively, will miss her. “She was a wonderful woman and she wasn’t sick so her death is incredibly sudden,” Sandack said. “It’s a sad time.” A lifelong resident of Riverside, Topinka would attend Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and graduate with a degree in 1966. She worked as a respected journalist for 11 years for area community newspapers, including the Berwyn Life.

Indian Chinese cuisine goes back over 100 years when people of Chinese origin moved to India across the North East Border and settled in Calcutta. Most of these immigrants were of Hakka ancestry. Over the years they adapted the Chinese cuisine for the locale Indian seasoning and cooking techniques. This is how Indian Chinese fusion began.

Local state legislators came together Dec. 10 to listen to a State of the College address at College of DuPage. College President Robert Breuder spoke for about an hour on a wide number of topics including college finances and enrollment. Those in attendance included: Rep. Sandy Pihos, R-Glen Ellyn; Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton; Rep. Ron Sandack, R-Downers Grove; and Sen. Tom Cullerton, D-Villa Park. Breuder said the school is in a “very strong financial position,” with more than $177 million in reserves – in part because he has operated it like a business.

“We feel good having $177 million in the bank,” he said. Of those reserves, $17 million is being held for use after legislators resolve the debate on Illinois pension reform. Breuder asked for any direction those present could provide, but legislators said it was tough to gauge where talks would be heading. “I don’t foresee any movement until Gov. Rauner puts his budget out there,” Cullerton said. Programs offered at the college are decided much like anything in a store, Breuder said. An item that was popular five or 10 years ago “doesn’t necessarily sell today,” so the school makes decisions based on what students are enrolling in or requesting. Breuder said the college has

recently added 60 new areas of study. “We think that’s one reason why our enrollment is bucking the trend,” he said. The college’s total headcount is 29,476, including full- and part-time students – the second highest in the state, behind the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Since 2008, College of DuPage’s enrollment has increased 13 percent, according to information provided by the school. However, the college has been in the spotlight over the course of the past five months for others reasons, starting with an email that leaked in July. The email was from Breuder to college trustees and addressed freeing up $20 million the state had set aside for demolition of buildings at the college. In the email, Breuder suggested finding options that would be “politically attractive” to the governor’s office, such as building a teaching and learning center with the money. The governor’s office responded to the leaked email by saying it would not provide the $20 million.
At the Dec. 10 meeting, Breuder said that money has been in the state’s budget since 2002 and he wants what the college has been promised and nothing more. “You’ll never get an email from me that will request an increase in funding,” Breuder said. There was substantial fallout as a result of the email. In August, the board voted 5-2 to censure trustee Kathy Hamilton for “inappropriate and embarrassing conduct” when she misled the public about the email, according to the censure resolution. The College of DuPage Faculty Association in September voted no confidence in Breuder. The board has not taken any action as a result of the vote, nor have they publicly addressed it. No legislators asked Breuder about the email or any of the resulting events during the Dec. 10 meeting. In October, For The Good of Illinois claimed the college was hiding $95 million in payments from the board using imprest payments, which are less than $15,000 and do not require board review.
2014 SILVERADO
A recent audit by Crowe Horwath LLP gave the college a clean bill of financial health. The board voted unanimously not to conduct an audit of the imprest payments. Breuder did not address many of the ongoing controversies surrounding the school Wednesday, but he did request legislators consider some form of relief from Freedom of Information Act requests for documentation. Breuder said the college has received 70 FOIA requests in the past year and that two-thirds of those requests have come from one group. “I think the law is a good law. It’s well-intentioned,” Breuder said. “But like every law, it can be abused.” He said the college is being harassed by watchdog organizations who are no longer looking out for the public. After Breuder’s presentation, Ives asked about job placement for recent graduates. Breuder said it depends on the program: Manufacturing students can get jobs right away, while it can be tougher for those who study theater.

to Hines VA, they work in the psychiatric unit with patients that suffer from PTSD and depression. “A patient will be sitting in a day room not interacting with anyone and within five minutes of our arrival, people are interacting and talking,” she said. The dogs are celebrities of a sort, with baseball-like cards with a photo of the dog and stats that include breed information, favorite toy and certifications that are distributed by the handlers. One of the locations the troupe visits is Spectrum, a division of Little Friends in Downers Grove. “Our clients love it when the handlers pass out cards of the dogs,” said Kathy Bytner, activity coordinator of Spectrum. “A couple of clients could wallpaper a room with the cards. Clients just get so excited when they come.” In addition to required vaccinations, the dogs are all bathed and groomed within 24 hours of a visit. Before a therapy dog receives its therapy dog work vest, however, there is much work to be done for both dog and handler. To receive therapy certification, Jankowski first must take on the handlers so they can learn how to communicate and learn the handling skills necessary for a therapy dog. The therapy dog skills class is next, an intensive four-week positive reinforcement training session.

DOWNERS GROVE – When the phrase, “This place is going to the dogs,” is used in conjunction with a Downers Grovebased dog therapy program, tails are typically wagging and smiles come to the faces of individuals in health care facilities, schools and senior assisted facilities. After Becky Jankowski retired from Hines Veterans Assistance Hospital in 1998, she took over its animal-assisted therapy program and renamed it PAWSitive Therapy Troupe. A certified professional dog trainer and a registered nurse, Jankowski trains handlers and dogs to become therapy dogs to interact with patients and students in a variety of settings. “Our program has 48 human volunteers and 65 dogs,” Jankowski said, adding many handlers have more than one dog involved in the program. PAWSitive Therapy Troupe is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization. Jankowski and her team, typically three to four dogs and their handlers per event, visit schools, libraries, hospitals, senior and children residential facilities, adult daycare and houses for families such as Ronald McDonald House and Fisher House. Recipients of dog therapy are more motivated when a dog is involved, and the results of the interaction between therapy dog and human are seen within minutes, Jankowski said. “You can bring a smile to a kid’s face who had a heart transplant or has cancer,” Jankowski said. “The parents are so appreciative we can make their child smile.” Jankowski also said on trips
“We work on specific skills for therapy work like going up on a bed, or paws up on a chair,” Jankowski said. Jankowski said the dog should have solid basic obedience training such as being able to perform the commands sit, down and come, prior to the therapy dog skills training. The training encompasses situations that the dogs and handlers may encounter during an outing. “Kids will try to stick fingers in the dogs’ eye, or an older person will try to pick a dog up and that can be tough,” she said. “A dog can be submissive but they have to be fine by being touched everywhere.” Testing includes how the dogs react when all four of their paws are touched, tail is pulled, mouth is opened, ears tugged, experiencing a whole-body hug and being picked up. Jankowski said the breed or the size of the animal isn’t as important as the temperament of the dog. “The smallest dog we have is a Maltese that is about 4 to 5 pounds and the largest is a Bernese Mountain Dog that is about 100 pounds,” she said. The dog troupe has been visiting the Woodridge Library children’s department for years during its popular fiveweek Read to the Dogs summer program, according to Sheri Daun-Bedford, head of the children’s department. “It’s been a wonderful experience,” Daun-Bedford said. “It’s not a tutoring program, they are there to listen. The whole point of the program is that it is nontraumatic to the children.” Daun-Bedford said the program typically attracts beginning readers, children up to third grade, but middle schoolage children are welcome.

Even on the coldest, snowiest nights, there’s a long line of hungry neighbors waiting for our food pantry to open. Right here in DuPage County, thousands of families are struggling to make ends meet. One of these struggling neighbors is Diane, a single mom. “I truly appreciate this service,” she said. “I am a diCOMMUNITY vorced mother of two teenage VOICE girls and this has caused a Kim tailspin in my life. I am forPerez ever grateful and humbled by the generosity of others.” Thanks to the generosity “I truly appreciate this of caring neighbors like you, Diane and her kids will have service. … I am forever enough to eat. We also open doors of hope A struggling neighbor and opportunity by providing those in need with educational programs, social services and help finding a job. Last month, we provided groceries and Thanksgiving meals to 3,075 families. Last year, adult students logged more than 25,500 hours in our classrooms and we celebrated 158 new jobs for formerly unemployed clients. None of this would be possible without the support of many generous donors and volunteers. People’s Resource Center is blessed by strong community support – and for this we are so grateful! Yet there is much more work to be done to help all of those in need. In fact, we have been presented with an amazing opportunity to further our mission – a generous DuPage neighbor has offered to match donations to People’s Resource Center, dollar-for-dollar, now through Dec. 31. Any gift you give will help us earn up to $130,000 in matching funds. Donate online at www.peoplesrc.org. It’s easy to make a difference – just $30 is enough to fill a grocery cart with food – and your donation will be matched to do twice as much good! It may be cold outside, but helping a neighbor will warm your heart. I can’t think of a better gift than knowing you’ve helped a neighbor in need – can you?

Just want to pay my respect to the people and the state of Illinois on the terrible loss of Judy Baar Topinka. She was one in a million. She’ll never be replaced. She was a great lady. My respects go to
her family – Joe, her son, and the others. God bless them all.
Reflecting on Topinka
I’ll miss not encountering Judy Baar Topinka at estate sales on Saturday mornings. It was always nice to see her little

Coping with cancer during the holidays SPONSORED BY
By Diane Kieger Spivak The holidays are typically a happy time of good will, get-togethers and gift-giving. But when you or a loved one has cancer, holidays can be confusing, depressing and exhausting. If you’ve been diagnosed, one way to cope is to socialize, according to cancercare. org, but accept only those invitations you can handle physically and truly want to take part in. It’s okay to say no, but keeping comfortably active will lift your spirits. Don’t think you have to do everything you’ve always done to prepare for and celebrate the holidays. If you normally shop till you drop but don’t have the energy this year, don’t try, advises the American Cancer Society. You can shop from the comfort of your home by mail, by phone, or if you have access to the Internet, online. If you’ve always been the hostess with the mostest, take it easy. Delegate the
prep to someone else or cut down on your event planning. If you just can’t relinquish your hosting duties, have a potluck meal so others can bring dishes. You can always eat out. Share your feelings and your worries with loved ones. They can be reassuring and it helps to get your concerns off your chest. If you have a friend or loved one who is dealing with cancer offer to help with shopping, decorating, cooking or just to lend an ear. They will appreciate your kindness and may take you up on your offer. Some people don’t like to ask for help but are grateful for it. Losing a loved one to cancer is especially painful when that person is conspicuously absent during holiday gatherings. Allow yourself to grieve, says the American Cancer Society, but talk to others, whether friends, loved ones or counselors. Also, try to balance your grief with traditional holiday activities.

In response to whomever said the police officer should have been charged was completely wrong. The grand jury saw all the evidence and made sure all bases were covered. They took their time. It’s shameful that it was turned into a riot situation. Too many people nowadays are just looking to start trouble. The people that really suffered were the people who lived in the community. The lost property, stores in their own backyards. The police officer’s life is ruined because of the incident and will live with this tragedy the rest of his life. Now more than ever police have to be very careful on what they do, especially when race is involved. If the shoe was on the other foot, you think there would have been riots? We all know the answer to that. This country is really going downhill.
On Ferguson, Mo., protests
After watching protest marches throughout the U.S., I’ve not yet seen the one sign that would stop the behavior leading to the marches. The sign would read, “Avoid confrontations with police; don’t engage in crime.”

Clever holiday entertaining shortcuts big on taste, low on stress Entertaining done easy with 4 simple tips
I
t’s the season for entertaining. Between the holidays, family gatherings and just needing an excuse to socialize during the long winter months, you’ll probably be organizing several fun parties and gatherings at your home. If you’re dreading the season because it feels like entertaining is so much work, the following tips will help you make this holiday season and beyond a breeze. * Make lists - If you’re a mobile device user, get a list started for everything you need. Any time you think of something, be sure to add it to the list immediately, or send yourself a reminder email so you can add it at a later time. These lists will help you keep everything organized and remind you of what you have left to achieve so you aren’t scrambling to make an appetizer or clean the bathroom at the last minute. * Take short cuts - Of course you want to show off your cooking skills, but that doesn’t mean you need to slave for hours in the kitchen preparing foods. Intricately decorated sugar cookies are as beautiful as they are delicious, but sometimes simple shortcuts - like making bars rather than cookies - can make an event much less stressful. Here’s a quick recipe from Simply Organic. * Ask for help - Just because you’re hosting the party doesn’t mean you need to do all the work. When issuing invitations, specify what kind of a party it is. A potluck is great for family gatherings and parties. Just provide a list of items people should bring on the invite. Once the party is underway, ask a friend to be in charge of keeping drinks filled, and have another friend monitor the music station, so you can enjoy the party as well. * Keep it simple - Often the simplest food options are the healthiest - something your guests might appreciate during this season of indulgence. For example, a fresh fruit or veggie tray is extremely simple to put together, because you won’t have to spend time in front of the stove or mix ingredients to bake in the oven. Continue to keep it simple, but add trendy touch by trading out the ranch dressing for a Greek yogurt dip or homemade hummus made with Simply Organic seasoning packets for additional flavor for your fresh fruit and veggie spread. No matter the type of party you are hosting this season, a few trendy touches and clever food shortcuts will wow guests and keep them raving long after it has ended. Above all else, have fun and enjoy these special moments with loves ones because the memories will last a lifetime.
Sugar Cookie Bars Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 25 minutes Ingredients: 3 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon sea salt 1 cup unsalted butter, softened 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar 1 egg 1 egg yolk 2 teaspoon Simply Organic vanilla extract
Frosting: 1/3 cup butter, softened 2 cups powdered sugar 2 tablespoons milk 1/2 teaspoon Simply Organic almond extract Sliced almonds
Sugar Cookie Bars directions: Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking pan. Line with parchment paper so the paper overhangs the edges. In a large bowl, stir the flour with the baking powder and salt; set aside. In a separate bowl, beat the butter with the sugar until fluffy. Beat in the egg, egg yolk and vanilla. Slowly add the flour mixture until fully incorporated. Press mixture into bottom of prepared pan. Chill for 30 minutes and preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until set in the center and edges are lightly golden. Cool completely before frosting. Frosting directions: Using an electric mixer, whip butter until light and fluffy. Beat in powdered sugar, milk and almond extract on low speed until smooth. Spread over cooled cookie bars. Sprinkle with almonds. Cut into 32 pieces.

You might be tempted to grab a bowl and start throwing ingredients right in, but it’s important to first make a plan. The most important thing is to ask an adult for permission to use the kitchen. Read your recipe carefully, making sure you have all the ingredients. Wear close-fitting clothing that won’t accidentally catch fire, and have oven mitts handy.
Follow the recipe The cool thing about baking is, it’s actually science: chemistry, to be exact. And just like any chemistry experiment, you have to mix and prepare your ingredients in a specific way to get
them to do what you want. Your recipe might tell you to mix the dry ingredients in one bowl and the wet ingredients in another and then combine, and it’s important to do that.
Be safe We’ve already said to wear close-fitting clothing and have oven mitts handy. But fire and burns are only a few of the dangers you might find in your kitchen. Don’t use sharp knives unless you’ve been given permission. Use a step stool or ask an adult to help you reach high shelves. And if there is a fire, don’t try to put it out yourself. An adult will know the best thing to do.
Don’t forget to clean up Once your treat is baking, you can take a few minutes to clean up. Wash your dishes or put them in the dishwasher, and wipe down the counter. When your food is done, you’ll be able to enjoy it in a clean kitchen. Just make sure to keep an eye on that oven timer so your treat doesn’t burn.
Activity Try this recipe for cinnamon swirl bread. It’s easy and quick and uses simple ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen! • 2 cups lour • 1 tablespoon baking powder • ½ teaspoon salt • 1 1/3 cup white sugar, divided • 1 egg • 1 cup milk • 1/3 cup vegetable oil • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease a 9-by-5-inch loaf pan. In a large bowl combine lour, baking powder, salt and 1 cup sugar. Add egg, milk and oil to lour mixture. 2. Stir until just moistened. Pour half of the batter into pan. 3. Sprinkle with cinnamon and remaining 1/3 cup sugar. (You can mix together cinnamon and sugar beforehand.) 4. Cover with remaining batter. Top with more cinnamon/sugar if desired. 5. Bake in preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into center of the loaf comes out clean. 6. Let cool in pan for 10 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely. You can choose to either let it sit overnight, or you can eat it while it’s still warm. Source: tablespoon.com

ne of the best ways to kick off the holiday season is to decorate. And while it’s easy to load your cart with beautiful decor from your favorite store, Christmas is more personal when decorations are homemade. No time you say? Between planning dinners for the family and throwing cocktail parties for friends, it can be overwhelming. But it is possible to survive it (and enjoy it) by keeping everything simple. This season, let your creative instincts shine through as you watch your mantels, stairwells, and tables come to holiday life, with ideas like these:

For most families, the living room is where gifts are exchanged, holiday movies are enjoyed and stories are shared gathered by the fireplace - a major focal point in the room. Give this cozy centerpiece a warm new look by creating a decorative display for your mantel. Draping a festive garland is one way to achieve a distinctive display. Do-it-yourself banners and garland have become increasingly popular as a great way to personalize your decor. To make your own, start with a heavy fabric, like burlap or the kind used for upholstery, and cut enough pennants for your favorite holiday saying, like “Let it Snow. Then using a snowflake stencil, spray paint the pattern with a silver color. Krylon Metallic Brilliant Silver, for example, works very well on fabric. Spray paint chipboard letters in a bright white. Once everything dries, spell out your message, one letter per pennant, and adhere the letters. Adorn the banner with plastic snowflakes and holly sprigs to finalize the festive look.
Trim a tree like a pro
The Christmas tree is another major focal point in your living room during the holidays. If you’re tired of the same old display year after year, give the tree a fresh look by changing up the ornaments and adding a theme. Start by choosing a specific color scheme, such as red and gold. Don’t have enough decorations to match your new theme? It’s easy and affordable to create your own by using items already around the house. For example, use bulbs from an old string of lights to create a whimsical decoration. Remove bulbs from the strand and spritz the inside of the bulb with Krylon ColorMaster Paint + Primer spray paint in cherry red, emerald green and global blue. Roll the bulb around to distribute the paint for a beautiful translucent look. Add a little glitz with Krylon Glitter Spray in resplendent red, glamorous green and magical multicolor to the outside of the bulb for a festive look, and top off with your favorite embellishments like ribbon or bells. You can even spray paint old ornaments so they fit into your new color scheme. Once your new decor is complete, hang ornaments and lights on your tree before displaying it for the whole family to enjoy.
Add elegant table toppers
If you are hosting get-togethers for family and friends, add a sparkle to your table. Not sure where to start? First, choose two or three colors. Select a table cloth, table runner or placemats in your color palette and consider the arrangement for the middle of the table. Try replacing the traditional red and green with gold and silver accessories - candles, napkin rings, small figures in the plates and other decorative accents. Include candles so the flickering flames can create a warm atmosphere. Even casually scattered pine cones, fir branches, red roses or poinsettias will add a special touch on the table. It’s easy to make your fine china the highlight of the dinner; but this year, try making your placemats the conversation starter by utilizing antique sheet music - which can be found at old book stores or simply printed at home. These sheets will make for a chic and unconventional base for any place setting. Remember, it doesn’t have to be a stressful time of year, with a little effort and creativity you can turn take your holiday decor from ho-hum to homey in no time. More information and additional project ideas can be found at www.krylon.com.

Trend-setting gifts for the women on your holiday shopping list
G
ift-giving doesn’t come naturally to everyone. If you’re struggling to find the perfect present, or if you just need some inspiration, Los Angeles-based celebrity stylist Lawrence VonRompf has tips to help you please all the women on your holiday shopping list. What makes a great gift? - A little pampering goes a long way. Put together a sampling of her favorite bath and body products and fragrances and personalize it to show you put thought into the gift. For example, include a monogrammed item like a scented candle or put all the products in a monogrammed gift box. For the fashionista who has everything - Don’t waste time and money trying to find the latest and greatest in style - she probably already has it. Instead, VonRumpf suggests enhancing her collection with nail polish or lipstick in the season’s hottest colors and shades. “Nail polishes make great gifts because the unique colors add a personal touch, he says. “I love the colors in the Limited-Edition Mary Kay At Play Hail to the Nails Mini Nail Trio for this season. On the New York Fashion Week runways, navy blue was clearly the new black and Mary Kay’s nail lacquer in Inky Blue aligns perfectly with this trend! Match her personality - It’s easier to find the right gift if you know her tastes in fashion, style, music or even favorite colors, VonRumpf says. Also consider her interests - would she prefer a spa day or a camping trip? A good rule of thumb is to choose a gift she wouldn’t expect - or purchase herself. For the woman who does everything - Moms are the epitome of hardworking women and deserve a little “me time. Surprise her - or another under appreciated woman in your life- with a pampering gift to make her feel special and loved. “I’d like to give my mom two things: a chance to unwind and time we can spend together. My favorite product for her is the Limited-Edition Mary Kay Pomegranate Satin Hands Pampering Set, VonRumpf says. “For a personal touch, pair the set with a gift card or a trip to her favorite nail salon and get a manicure together. Under the mistletoe - Whether it’s a budding romance or a longterm relationship, surprise her with something thoughtful and personal. A scented gift works perfectly, as it offers a touch of personality and will also remind her of you every time she smells it. “Mary Kay’s Limited-Edition Winter Wishes Fragrance Wand has citrus, jasmine and snow apple notes, so it is festive for the season but also smells great on anyone, says VonRumpf. “The fragrance wand is easy to travel with, so for a truly memorable gift, I suggest pairing it with a little weekend getaway for you and that special someone. With these tips, finding the perfect gift for the lucky ladies on your list will be a cinch this holiday season. So get your shopping done early, relax and wait to see the look of joy on her face when she opens your present!

Five unexpected big ticket bargains you can find at holiday time
B
argain hunting is practically a sport, especially during the holiday shopping season. Deloitte’s 2014 annual holiday survey predicts the average American will drop nearly $1,300 this holiday season. With that level of spending in mind, planning to save real money elsewhere is crucial to managing a household’s bottom line. Promotions such as standard Black Friday deals or free holiday shipping are nice but often don’t add up very quickly. Huge value can be found on big-ticket items since their need can be anticipated months ahead. Purchasing them seasonally or via yearend clearance sales can provide savvy consumers with hundreds or thousands of dollars in savings.
Here are a few examples of products that fall into each category:
Year-end closeouts
* Cars. With the next year’s models already on lots for a number of months, dealers are anxious to move cars from the previous year. Moreover, December is their last chance to improve year-end sales numbers - whether at the dealer or individual salesperson level.
• Three Year Light Warranty LIFETIME Tree Construction Warranty • Easy Hook-on Construction – No Heavy Bulky Hinge Sections to Lift and Assemble

* Flooring. The end of the year is a great time to buy new hardwood flooring. Suppliers and mills often assess their inventory at this time and clear out product lines before the end of the year. Stores such as Lumber Liquidators purchase these products at discounted rates and pass the options and savings directly to consumers, resulting in a great deal that can also increase the value of a home.
Seasonal purchases
* Gas grills and air conditioners. Stores may offer deep discounts on off-season products such as air conditioners and gas grills. This rule of thumb is particularly valuable for people who live in cold weather climates, where summer goods become especially obsolete during the long winter months. * Furniture. The holiday season brings sales and promotions at many furniture stores on living and dining room items as people are preparing for holiday entertaining. In addition, outdoor furniture is generally at its best price due to it being out of season.

* Boats. Boat dealers are often trying to move inventory during the winter season, which gives the buyer an upper hand in negotiating prices. The off-season is also a popular time for boat shows, where dealers often offer their best prices of the year. No matter a consumer’s methodology, a little planning goes a long way in finding bargains. There are very helpful websites - such as www.dealnews.com - that do a great job staying on top of deals both large and small. Online forums and traditional word of mouth can also assist in the hunt.

5 NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS TOO SIMPLE TO OVERLOOK
Suburban Life • mysuburbanlife.com • Wednesday, December 17, 2014 • SD
I
adno=S0250923
f you make New Year’s resolutions, you’re not alone. About half of Americans make special goals for each new year, according to University of Scranton research. Unfortunately, you’re also not alone if you break them, as only 8 percent of people are successful in achieving their resolution. Why do so many people fail, and furthermore, what’s the secret to success? “The start of a new year is not powerful enough to help you continue to make the best decisions,” says Dr. Chris Mohr, a fitness and nutritional expert who consults for television, print and radio outlets throughout the country. “People need to define their ‘why’ if they’re going to make a permanent change.” If your reason for changing your life is for your mental and physical well-being, you understand your ‘why.’ But instead of selecting a huge resolution that will take months or years of dedication to achieve, why not focus on small things you can easily implement that will compound to have a dramatic effect? “Start with one small change,” says Dr. Mohr. “You don’t have to wait for the right time, right date, right day, event, etc. Start now and start small. Then work your way up with small, daily habits.” He recommends five, fail-safe goals that are surprisingly simple and will still have a big impact on your overall health and wellness: 1. Include lean protein with every single meal Protein is an important part of balanced nutrition, but many people go without it, particularly for breakfast and lunch. Data suggests that 20-30 grams of protein daily helps you feel full and maintain muscle mass. While chicken, pork and lean beef are protein-rich foods, meat isn’t the only option. For example, a half cup of beans contains as much protein as 1 ounce of broiled steak. Other meat-free protein sources include soy, yogurt and eggs. 2. Make raw nuts your snack of choice When hunger pangs strike, it’s too easy to head to the vending machine or reach for prepackaged sweets. To keep hunger at bay and give your body wholesome nutrients that truly satisfy, keep several jars of raw nuts nearby for snacking. Just one or two handfuls of raw nuts a day can help control your caloric intake! Almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, pecans - all are great options that will fill you up without the extra oil and salt, plus they keep your energy high. 3. Move more every day You don’t need to join a gym or make a dramatic fitness goal - just resolve to move around more every day, particularly if you have a sedentary job. The average adult sits for 15 hours a day, not including sleeping! Take a walk over lunch, park in the back of the parking lot or opt for the stairs over the elevator; it all adds up when done daily. If you find yourself forgetting, set an alarm on your phone or computer to go off every two hours as a reminder to take a 10-minute move-andgroove break. 4. Take a Nordic Naturals omega-3 supplement Commit to taking one supplement in the new year: omega-3s. People all across the world don’t get enough omega-3, and correcting this can drastically reduce the risk of disease and mortality. A Harvard study found up to 96,000 people in the United States die each year from insufficient omega-3 intake. Omega-3 fats impact every single cell in the body and because they are essential fatty acids, they can’t be self-produced and must come from your diet. Select a pure omega-3 supplement like Nordic Naturals, which is produced without contaminants or impurities for superior quality. 5. Turn off electronics and tune into life Your health and wellness go beyond what you eat and how much you exercise. Modern life is busy, and it’s easy to get distracted by email and mobile devices. Resolve to turn off your electronics at least once a day to focus on two things: yourself and your loved ones. It’s easy to lose sight of what’s really important, like friends, kids, your spouse and even you. Take time every day to tune out of the electronic stimuli and focus on things you’re grateful for - perhaps quiet moments by yourself, belly laughs with your kids or a tender hug from your partner.

he days are flying quickly past, and the holiday season will be over before you know it. If you haven’t completed - or even started - your holiday gift shopping yet, don’t worry; there’s still plenty of time to get everything accomplished. First, be sure to find an idea for everyone on your list before you even think about shopping. With your ideas written down on a piece of paper, you’ll be efficient in checking each and every name off your list. If the ideas are causing you the most problems, try an Internet search. Keywords to use can include “gifts for mom” or “musical gifts for a teenage boy.” And if your list includes people with hobbies, be sure to try an Internet search using those keywords as well. Since you’re already at the computer looking for ideas, you might as well continue using it to make your purchase. There’s a good chance you can find the same item for sale on several different vendor sites. A quick online search will help you find the item for the best price, and you might also discover you can get the present gift wrapped as well. When comparing prices, be sure to confirm that the vendor can ship your gift on time, what the cost is for shipping, and whether the company has a return policy. You also can go online to find excellent discounts and coupons for the items on your list. For example, Ebates. com provides discounts and coupons for vendors, and also rewards you with cash back on your purchases once you’ve finished your shopping. So not only are you able to find the item you wish to purchase with a free shipping offer or at a discounted price, but you’ll also receive a percentage of your purchase as cash back to be used however you want. Before you finalize your purchase, make certain it will arrive before the holiday. Online retailers will provide you with last-minute shipping information so you will know when it’s too late. You’ll also know if you need to pay more for a faster shipping service. Websites like Ebates often have discounts on expedited shipping. The good news is, if you ship the present online while sitting at your computer at home or at the office, you can avoid the long holiday lines at the post office. If you haven’t started your holiday shopping yet, your secret is safe. With these tips, you can check every name off your list with minimal effort and know that every gift will be delivered in time for Christmas day.

Nominated by Amy Wesley, College Counselor: “ Grace’s academic achievement (she is enrolled in a highly demanding course load at Benet and maintains a 4.0 GPA) and her extra-curricular involvement are extraordinary. I honestly don’t know how she balances it all. Involved with music and drama at Benet and as a SAG-AFTRA professional actress (you might recognize her from Chicago Fire two years ago), Grace loves to perform. She also loved the team aspect of cheerleading last year and would have liked to continue her senior year, if not for the conlicts it caused with being Miss Illinois Outstanding Teen. A few years ago, Grace was watching the Miss America pageant and thought “I can do that!” So she ran for Miss Chicago’s Outstanding Teen… and won. While she doesn’t intend on pursuing the pageant industry, it has provided her with the opportunity to take her platform on D.A.R.E. to a state level. Grace has had numerous speaking engagements at D.A.R.E. graduations and was asked to be the State Representative for the Advisory Board. It’s a cause she feels very strongly about, as she has seen the pain irst-hand and wants to do all she can to protect other families from facing that tragedy. Grace is not the kind of kid who says she wants to make a difference; she actually goes out and does it. There was a reason why she won that pageant, and it wasn’t just because she’s pretty! It’s because she knew that God had a plan for her to make an impact on other teenagers in Illinois, and it’s a gift she has not taken lightly. For example, Grace has combined her love of English with her desire to help others by founding “Journals for Joy”, which will

Community Service: Volunteer in and out of school with our special needs students. This includes beingan Adaptive PE leader attending movies, football games, dances and other events with our multi-needs students.Volunteered at church; teaching Sunday School, assisting with worship and greeting on Sunday mornings. Volunteering for the community organization Helping Girls Navigate Adolescence (HGNA) coordinating high school girls to volunteer for events for younger girls in the community which center on building good self-esteem and friendships. Nominated by Kevin M. Leslie, Guidance Counselor: “Emma is a perfect candidate for the Suburban Life recognition because she has worked hard to become the type of student that Suburban Life Scholars seeks to recognize. With a rigorous course load, she has achieved at a high academic level, while still being very involved in the school community. At any given time, she is an active participant in our theater program, speech team, scholastic bowl team, and research opportunities in the science department. What makes Emma stand out the most is her time she spends with our special needs students. She works with the students in the Adaptive PE class. She is also an aide in the multi-needs classroom, and eats lunch with the students. Her compassion and love of building friendships with these students extends beyond the classroom. Through Circle of Friends she socializes outside of school; going to movies, and football games, as well as to all of the school dances. This opportunity to give back every day is something that is central to the person she is.”

provide impoverished students with an emotional outlet through writing. Whether it is her involvement with activities at Benet, through the D.A.R.E. program, or as Miss Illinois Outstanding Teen, Grace conducts herself with integrity, conidence, and respect for others. She is an amazing young lady who deinitely knows how to multi-task, manage and organize her time, and somehow remain committed to literally every task she undertakes. She’s ‘grounded’, enthusiastic, and simply a joy to be around, making her a positive role model both at Benet and for Benet.”

The sign ordinance originally was adopted in May 2005, and the deadline to comply was extended from May 2012 to May 2014. The ordinance only allows business signs to face driveable right-of-ways, like roads, and not train tracks, like the Metra/BNSF line that runs behind Peterson’s business. The ordinance also
doesn’t allow painted wall signs outside downtown. Peterson’s building, located at 1301 Warren Ave., is not located in the downtown business district. DOWNERS GROVE – For Leibundguth Moving and Storage owner Robert Peterson, the fight to keep his hand-painted sign on the back wall of his business isn’t over, despite a village sign ordinance saying otherwise. Peterson filed a complaint against the village Dec. 8 in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Peterson says the sign ordinance violates his First Amendment right to free speech. “I had no choice but to agree to move forward [with the lawsuit],” Peterson said. “I’m not only trying to help myself, but all the other guys. There is more they could have done and they didn’t. They created a monster.” Village Communications Director Douglas Kozlowski said the village does not comment on pending litigation. According to Kozlowski, 96 percent of businesses have complied with the sign ordinance, and many of those businesses are along the railroad
filed, Peterson generates between $40,000 and $60,000 a year in revenue from the sign facing Metra, the equivalent of about 15 percent to 20 percent of revenue. After months of appearances to the village zoning board and village council pleading his case to keep his sign, Peterson lost his final appeal in November. Peterson received a letter from the village confirming the variance request was denied and he had to come into compliance by April 2015, according to Peterson’s lawyer, Jeffrey Schwab. “What we hope to accomplish is that Bob can keep his sign and continue his business. He has been there 44 years and the business has been there for 80 years,” Schwab said. “We want him to continue using the signs for business, particularly the one on the back of his building because it exposes him to Metra commuters.” Schwab said the lawsuit is seeking permanent injunction against the village so they cannot remove his signs.

Our final plate was the chicken-fried chicken. It was, by far, the largest item we ordered, and could be considered a full-sized meal. A chicken breast – flattened, breaded and fried – lay atop mashed potatoes and was topped with a fried egg and white country gravy. My companion devoured nearly the entire
plate without speaking, only smiling between bites. While we were a little fry heavy in our order, there were plenty of selections to satisfy any appetite, including the pan-seared scallops, Gulf shrimp brochette, grilled romaine salad, shrimp and grits, and a grilled portobello, zucchini and squash salad.
The website notes the kitchen uses grass-fed beef and wildcaught seafood. My companion was a little worried that small plates would mean certain hunger after the meal was finished, but that was not the case. Another visit to Union House American Kitchen is certainly on the horizon.

WINFIELD – It was a sunny and chilly December day when my companion and I decided to head to Union House American Kitchen in Winfield for lunch. The space was inviting as soon as we stepped inside, where the high, white-painted wood ceilings and decor felt reminiscent of historic Americana. The lighting fixtures over the tables were styled after old-fashioned bulbs, and behind a long, wooden bar that could easily seat 15, was a chalkboard with a plethora of craft beers and drink specials. The restaurant is a smallplate gastropub that our waiter explained focuses on locally harvested and seasonal ingredients. Since we were first-timers at the restaurant and newbies to the small-plate scene, our waiter suggested we order several selections to share. Menu items range from salads to seafood and steak, so after much discussion, my companion and I selected four plates to split between us. I couldn’t resist ordering the fried pickles as an appetizer. Silver-dollar-sized slices of dill pickle were coated in American Patriot beer batter and then fried. A creamy avocado and buttermilk sauce accompanied the half-dozen slices for dipping. Not greasy, they were absolutely delicious, with the sauce offering a cool complement. Crab hush puppies called out to my seafood-aficionado companion. They were made with dried corn and crabmeat shaped into ping-pong-ballsized portions and fried. The four hush puppies resting on a sweet and spicy honey pepper sauce were very tasty, and the crabmeat was fully present, not hidden behind the corn. A bourbon pork skewer was next. The tender pork was glazed in garlic and brown sugar and had a side of sriracha cream for dipping. Again, the pairing of the sauce with the entree proved to be perfect.

Rebellato, Sentinels shut down Coal City By DAVE OWEN msleditorial@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – A huge rebounding edge and Jack Rebellato’s hot shooting hand combined to produce great results Friday for host Westmont in a 60-40 win against Coal City. Rebellato scored 13 of his game-high 20 points in the first half, including buzzer beating three-pointer that capped an 18-5 second-quarter run and gave the Sentinels (4-5) a 28-13 halftime lead. “In the first half , we got our defensive rotation together, we were communicating and we were making our shots and making the right plays,” Rebellato said. “That got us off to a good start, and we were able to finish.” Rebellato hit five 3-pointers, and topped his team-best season average of 14 points per game. “He’s really good at spreading the floor and making defenses extend,” Westmont coach Craig Etheridge said. “He’s not the most orthodox player, but he’s been shooting the ball consistently all year. He has almost like a 1940s type set shot.” Using both set shots and jumpers, Rebellato was on target. “I was really feeling it out there,” he said. Westmont had a 32-15 advantage in rebounds, keyed by the inside play of Sean Alexander (16 points, six rebounds), Marcus Mott Larson (four points, six rebounds) and Carlos Antons (four points, four rebounds, two blocked shots). “It was our best performance as a team all year,” Etheridge said. “We’ve been stressing rebounding and contesting shots. We were helped that they [Coal City] didn’t shoot that well (11-of-41 field goals), but the big thing for us was it was one and done for the most part. It’s hurt us in past games, giving secondand third-chance opportunities, so it was good to see us

What to watch: The late kickoff on the opening day of bowl season pits MAC Eastern Division champion Bowling Green against a Southern Alabama team that will be making its first bowl appearance. Bowling Green is coming off a 51-17 loss to Northern Illinois in the MAC championship while Jaguars have lost their last two. A trio of local underclassmen are on the Bowling Green roster. While Lemont’s Tim McAuliffe was redshirted this season, former Downers Grove South kicker Anthony Farinella and Wheaton Warrenville South’s Greg Hohenstein have made an impact on special teams. This season, Farinella recorded 15 touchbacks on 79 kickoffs.

PREP ROUNDUP
Benet boys finding early-season success
Downers Grove North
Downers Grove North fell to Lyons Township 65-56 on Dec. 12. The Trojans (3-4, 0-3) take on Glenbard West at 7:30 p.m. Friday before a week-long break prior to the Romeoville Invite on Dec. 26.
Downers Grove South
The Mustangs were edged by Addison Trail 49-45 Friday. Downers Grove South (0-7, 0-2) will go on the road to face Hinsdale South at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL Westmont
The Sentinels fell to Coal City 53-48 on Thursday. Guard Annie Carlson led Westmont with 23 points.
Downers Grove South
The Downers Grove South girls went 1-1 in their last two games, defeating Willowbrook 43-31 on Dec. 9 before falling to West Suburban Gold power Proviso East 77-49 on Saturday. Senior guard Vashae Easley led the team with 21 points
VASHAE EASLEY Downers Grove North Senior | Girls basketball
Downers Grove North
The Downers Grove North girls basketball team has lost back to back conference games for the first time in more than a year. The Trojans – who went 11-1 in the West Suburban Silver last season – are in the midst of a two-game losing streak after dropping a 45-40 decision to Lyons Township Thursday followed by a 51-40 loss to Proviso West Saturday. Junior Jaida Green has 21 points and 10 rebounds during the loss to Proviso West. Downers Grove North (5-3, 2-2) will try to get back on track Friday when the girls host Glenbard West.
BOYS WRESTLING Westmont
Five of six Westmont wrestlers placed as the Sentinels finished sixth at the Walther Christian Invitational. Senior Adam Ferrell captured the 160-pound title by a fall at 1:48 in the championship bout. He is 7-1 for the season. Brandon Goers won the 220-pound championship by a fall late in the second period, improving his overall record to 5-1 for the season. Anthony Griffiths came in second at 285, while Isaac Fasullo placed fourth at 120 pounds and sophomore Luis Rodriguez was fifth at 152 pounds.
Why Easley was selected: Easley recorded a team-high 21 points Dec. 9 as Downers Grove South beat Willowbrook 43-31 and led the team to its second straight conference win. Last year was a learning season for Downers Grove South, as the girls basketball team welcomed new head coach Lyndsie Long. But the Mustangs are trending upwards this season, and largely because of the leadership and offensive contributions from senior point guard Vashae Easley. Easley, the Sears Appliance & Hardware Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life sports editor Alex Soulier about learning a new system and her expectations for the rest of the season.
Alex Soulier: You’ve had a promising start in the West Suburban Gold, are you pleased with your 2-1 conference record? Vashae Easley: It’s a huge
improvement compared to last season, so it’s nice to see the hard work is paying off and translating into wins.
Soulier: What’s been the key to getting those two early victories? Easley: Communicating on
defense and working as a team. I think our attitude has also been great, too. We try not to get down on ourselves and on each other, instead remaining positive and having each others’ backs.
Soulier: Last season was a learning year for the team, are you now more comfortable in Coach Long’s system? Easley: I feel way more comfortable. It’s not easy to adjust to a whole new offense, but I think it’s paying off this year.
Soulier: What are your goals and expectations for the remainder of the season? Easley: There are a few teams and rivals that we still have to play this year. Hopefully, we can come away with the wins.

ELMHURST – Benet’s young team is learning how to win this season, and that includes winning ugly. The Red Wings won a pair of games over the weekend, beating Joliet Catholic 63-34 Friday and York 39-31 Saturday. The York game wasn’t pretty, but grinding out a win is something the mostly new squad can learn from. “It was a grind out there for sure,” junior Dan Sobolewski said after the York game. “In the first few games of the season, we weren’t defending like we were capable of. We were letting up 50 or 60 points a game. The last two games we’ve given up 34 and 31 points. To score 39 points and still win a game, that’s good for our team.” Sobolewski scored a teamhigh 10 points and was the only player to score in double figures against the Dukes. The Red Wings trailed 10-2 early, but scored the final basket of the first quarter and outscored the Dukes 17-3 in the second quarter for a 21-13 halftime lead. Benet led the rest of the game. It was a defensive struggle between two teams which lost most of their starting lineups from a year ago. Players like Sobolewski and Colin Bonnett, who made a pair of key three-pointers in Benet’s run in the second quarter, are forced into bigger, leadership roles this season. “We’re really, really young and inexperienced,” Sobolewski said. “Me and Colin are the
two guys who have been there before so we have to help the rest of the guys get used to it. We got to lead the rest of the guys.” At 4-2, Benet seems to have survived some early season struggles to find some stability. Junior James Dockery and seniors Cameron Graves and Jeff Conrad have been some of the players stepping up into bigger roles this season.
