Village votes on beekeeping, spending By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – The Westmont Village Board was at one with nature Thursday, unanimously approving measures involving beehives, creek stabilization and green initiatives.

1. Bees please

Westmont residents can now keep bees after trustees passed an ordinance related to the matter. The issue came to the fore when Hilton Chicago/Oak Brook Hills Resort Chef Sean Patrick Curry expressed interest in installing apiaries at the hotel. Curry said Thursday he wants to put eight hives on the Westmont property, citing their marketing appeal. After last week’s vote, single-family and commercial lots one-third of an acre or larger can be used for beekeeping, according to village documents, as

A maximum of two colonies per one-third acre is allowed under the ordinance and a barrier at least 6 feet tall surrounding the bees must be maintained. Neither the bees nor their products can be sold from residential property, documents state, and a permit is required to keep bees. Curry said he hopes to have the hives installed in May. Nearby Burr Ridge and Clarendon Hills allow beekeeping as well, according to documents.

2. Stabilizing St. Joseph’s

The board also opted Thursday to approve two spending items related to restoring St. Joseph’s Creek. The first was to award a bid proposal from Nettle Creek Nursery Inc. for the St. Joseph’s Creek Stabilization Project in the amount of $338,470 – about 15 percent below the engineer’s estimate, according to village documents. The Morris contractor’s bid was the lowest of five the village received. Trustees also voted to grant Wills Burke Kesley Associates a $30,000 engineering agreement for construction inspection engineering and environmental services on the project, which includes building drainage improvements along the banks of the creek, documents state.

3. Going green

The board authorized an about $51,000 design agreement with Thomas Engineering Group for a section of the Central Business District Alley Reconstruction Project west of Cass Avenue between Burlington Avenue and Irving Street. The undertaking includes rebuilding the alley with green initiatives, village documents state, such as brick pavers and pervious material.

By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – A Westmont restaurant is going all in on video gaming with the addition of two new cafes that will focus on gambling in a relaxed environment. Laura Trilla, owner of local Italian eatery Papa Passero’s, which also offers gaming, received unanimous approval Thursday from the Village Board for the licenses necessary to open the establishments. “A lot of people do enjoy video

gaming,” Trilla said. “I’ve had standing-room only for quite a bit at Papa’s.” The cafes, which will be named Laura’s, will feature video slots and poker, as well as beer, wine and select menu items from Trilla’s restaurant. She hopes to see both locations, 6356 S. Cass Ave. and 1125 Fairview Ave., open by June 1. The storefronts are currently in the renovation process, and when completed, they will have the same cozy, classic aesthetic as Papa Passero’s, Trilla said. Each will include a dining sec-

The village has seen significant returns and a positive response from the business community since the board approved video gaming in 2012. In December 2014 alone, Westmont took in $12,891 in gaming revenue, according to Trustee Bob Scott. Eight businesses in the village currently offer video gambling with a combined 38 licensed terminals, according to Communications Director Larry McIntyre.

Deputy Chief Jim Gunther said the Westmont Police Department hasn’t seen an uptick in crime or an effect on officers’ day-to-day work as a result of businesses similar to those Trilla plans to open in the coming months. “We’re glad you’re here,” Mayor Ron Gunter said Thursday. For Trilla, a Willowbrook resident who has worked at Papa Passero’s for more than four decades, the choice to expand in Westmont was an easy one. “Westmont has been really my home for 40 years,” she said.

PROFESSIONAL CLEANING Q: How often should I have my teeth cleaned? A: The short answer is you should go for a teeth-cleaning session with your dentist every six months, the same interval that’s recommended for a checkup. Professional cleaning is necessary because no matter how diligent you are in brushing and flossing at home, there’s no way you will be able to reach every nook, cranny and fissure where plaque can accumulate and harden into tartar. The dentist’s office, for one thing, is equipped with the tools that can effectively get into those small spaces. And the work will be done by either the dentist or by a dental hygienist, a licensed professional. They will use either hand-held scalers – small tools used to scrape off the plaque buildup – or perhaps an ultrasonic machine that uses sound waves to loosen the plaque. Then they will wash the plaque away with a jet of cool water. As a precaution against periodontal, or gum, disease, the dentist or the hygienist will also clean the sides of the roots of the teeth. In some cases, this may require the use of an anesthetic, either topical or injected, to eliminate discomfort. As a final step, they will polish your teeth to make them sparkle and to help resist plaque accumulation. Talk with your dentist about the importance of regular professional cleaning.

Bruce Rauner Illinois Governor ing the property tax burden on Illinois homeowners. Besides the right-to-work and prevailing wage reforms that he said will decrease local government’s costs, he wants a two-year freeze on property taxes and an increased emphasis on consolidating local units of government – Illinois at almost 7,000 has far more than any other state. “Our property taxes are out of control and are crushing middle-class families. Illinois’ high property taxes have skyrocketed because state and local governments have been unable or unwilling to control their own spending.

In exchange for the business reforms, Rauner said he supports a plan to increase the state’s minimum wage from $8.25 to $10 an hour, but phased in over seven years. While Rauner in his speech did not address the state’s $111 billion unfunded pension liability – a 2013 reform bill is awaiting an Illinois Supreme Court ruling regarding its constitutionality – his priorities list included a proposal to move state employees into a new tier of benefits or into 401(k)s while protecting the pension benefits they have accumulated to date. Another proposal seeks to give state government employees merit-based raises. A number of Rauner’s proposals are aimed at the local level, such as lower-

We must empower taxpayers to take control of their property tax bills by giving them greater ability to control local government spending,” Rauner said. Rauner also echoed previous calls for constitutional amendments for term limits and merging the offices of treasurer and comptroller. Lawmakers will meet again next week when Rauner delivers his proposed 2016 budget, which will give a more complete picture as to how he plans to pay for initiatives such as increased funding for K-12 education, and at the same time what needs to be cut. Besides a multibillion-dollar backlog of unpaid bills, the state faces a $6 billion budget shortfall for the next fiscal year beginning July 1. A much-criticized 2011 increase in the state income tax was allowed to expire Jan. 1 as promised. While Rauner said he wants to keep

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner in his first State of the State address laid out a broad agenda to revitalize Illinois’ economy that focuses significantly on stripping the power and influence of labor unions. Rauner in his 40-minute speech to state lawmakers the afternoon of Feb. 4 called his proposals “bold” and “aggressive” but “necessary and very doable” to repair the state’s deep financial troubles, and make Illinois more competitive with other states. “The time is now for all of us, Republicans and Democrats, to do big things – the right things – for the people of our great state. Now is the time for bold and decisive action. It is make or break time for the Land of Lincoln,” Rauner said. But while Rauner preached the need for bipartisan cooperation to stop what he repeatedly called on the campaign trail the state’s downward spiral, he almost certainly will find a number of his proposals, especially those blunting organized labor, a very hard sell to Democratic lawmakers whom hold House and Senate supermajorities. He outlined some of his proposals in his address, and others in an accompanying list of priorities he called “The Illinois Turnaround.” He told lawmakers they should consider the plan as a whole rather than a list of separate initiatives, and that while they would find things they don’t like, they will find a number of things they do. Among his top priorities for economic growth are implementing more significant workers’ compensation reform, tort reform, implementing true competitive bidding for public works projects while limiting prevailing wage requirements, and allowing local voters to decide by referendum whether or not local government employees should be forced to join a union or pay dues as a condition of employment – Rauner dubbed the localized right-towork areas “employee empowerment zones.” “Employee empowerment zones will increase jobs for residents, increase economic activity for local businesses and generate more tax dollars for local governments. It’s a win-winwin proposal,” Rauner said. Rauner also seeks to limit organized labor’s influence by extending the existing ban on political contributions for businesses with state contracts to all organizations with a collective bargaining agreement with state government, and organizations funded by entities receiving state Medicaid funds.

“The time is now for all of us, Republicans and Democrats, to do big things – the right things – for the people of our great state. Now is the time for bold and decisive action. It is make or break time for the Land of Lincoln.”

Resident feedback leads to some positive changes at the library In December, Westmont residents were given the opportunity to provide feedback about their library experience through a print survey distributed in our quarterly newsletter. We were overwhelmed by the number of positive responses we received from users who make the library an important part of their lives. Residents also suggested areas we could improve, COMMUNITY and staff have already begun VOICE making changes to our colKate lections, programming and Buckson facility as a result. Many of you love the variety of activities and materials available in the children’s department, but we are taking your advice and sprucing up our reading garden area. New signs have been purchased using grant money and will be installed in late winter to improve book browsing for children and their caregivers. All new educational toys will replace old, well-loved ones. Look for interactive displays and activity boards to be added to the reading garden later this spring. If you visit the youth services department on a Wednesday or Thursday morning, you will see just how much our community loves story time. With an average of more than 60 people attending each toddler storytime session, it became clear not every child benefits from a large-group experience. To address this, the library will offer two story times Tuesdays starting this spring for our youngest Westmont residents who prefer a small group. Residents will need a library card to preregister using the online calendar of events found at westmontlibrary.org or by phone. The majority of people told us in the survey they would like to see the new fiction and DVD areas expanded. We are removing old items that have not been checked out in years and replacing them with new, in-demand materials. Library staff frequently add materials to our online collections so people can check out new items to their tablet or mobile device instantaneously. Selectors are always on the lookout for great titles, so feel free to share your suggestions with a librarian next time you visit. You also can fill out the Suggest a Purchase form on our website. Our goal is to listen to our users, make changes that will improve the library and impact the community in a positive way. We hope residents will continue to give us feedback on their experience in the library and offer suggestions for how we can offer consistently great service.

Pensioners beware

Illinois public pensioners beware. With the increasingly massive amount of state of Illinois dollars devoted to public pensions, soon nothing will be left to cover other essential services: social needs, public safety needs, highway needs, school needs, etc. In order for politicians to get re-elected, they have consistently granted funds they did not have to pensions. They shouldn’t have done it, but they did. The choice seems to be for those on public pensions to halt their obsession with “you promised us” and make some minor modifications or face drastic measures (like Detroit) and end up with far less in the long run. Among the alternatives that will be far more costly to everyone, including pensioners, are state of Illinois income tax increases, reorganization through bankruptcies or drastic cuts in essential services.

… Maybe our elected officials should redirect their efforts from building an unneeded $50 million police station/ village hall and spend some of that money on getting the needed equipment necessary to provide our residents with the services they deserve. If it is not an equipment problem, then maybe we need to train our snowplow drivers on how to effectively plow our streets. Something is very wrong when other surrounding towns can provide these services and Downers Grove cannot!

By Denise Freese It’s a well-known fact that sugar is harmful for your teeth. What you may not know is that acid produced by bacteria in the mouth is the cause of cavities, according to Kimberly A. Harms, DDS, a spokeswoman for the American Dental Association. Any carbohydrate that you eat can start the process of acid production, including sugar, rice, potatoes, bread, fruits and vegetables, according to www.webmd.com. The website states that acidic foods and beverages can break down your teeth’s outer shell (the enamel), weaken the tooth, and make teeth susceptible to decay. As erosion of the tooth enamel progresses, it can result in tooth sensitivity, pain, a higher likelihood of decay, and darker teeth. Dr. Nancy Rosen, a dentist in Manhattan, stated in an article on www.cbsnews.com that acid in foods and liquids can cause irreversible erosion of tooth enamel, which can’t be re-

paired with simple fillings. Veneers and crowns are needed to fix the affected teeth. The article lists various suggestions from The Mayo Clinic to minimize the damage to teeth. First, limit consumption of highly acidic foods and beverages, such as soda (both regular and diet), energy drinks, juice, wine, most fruits, pickles, and sauerkraut. It’s also good to eat acidic foods as part of a larger meal to help neutralize and eliminate the acids. The worst time to eat acidic food is just before bedtime, because saliva, which helps neutralize and dilute acids, decreases during sleep. The Mayo Clinic suggests drinking with a straw to minimize contact of the fluid with the teeth. Swishing the mouth with water or a fluoride rinse can also help neutralize the acid. Wait 30 minutes to brush your teeth after eating acidic foods so you don’t brush the acid all over your teeth. Visit your dentist for regular cleanings and check-ups to help keep your teeth healthy!

Celebrity Dance Studio Celebrates Valentine’s Day With A Masquerade Ball! SPONSORED BY By Denise Freese The benefits of dance are tremendous, at both recreational and competitive levels. According to www.dance-teachers. org, dancing provides good exercise, which can lead to stress reduction, stronger bones and muscles, improved balance and stamina, and even weight loss. Dancers gain confidence by achieving new skills, and are rewarded with a creative outlet; all you need is the desire to have a good time. Ballroom dancing has become extremely popular; the success of the television show “Dancing With The Stars” is a testament to this. Couples move to the music using step-patterns and rhythms that match the musical style of a song. The “Smooth/Ballroom” style, made up of flowing dances that require a couple to be constantly moving around the dance floor, includes the Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, and Quickstep. The second type of ballroom dance is the Latin/Rhythm style. A lot of energy is required as the dancers keep time to the

rhythm of the music. Examples include Swing, Rumba, Cha Cha, Salsa, Merengue, Disco, and Samba. Celebrity Dance Studio, a family-run business, is a popular venue for those interested in ballroom dance. They are celebrating Valentine’s Day this year by hosting a Masquerade Ball for anyone who would like to come and dance! Whether you’d like a “date night” with your spouse, or if you’re single and want to meet other singles interested in dancing, this will be a fun time for all. The Ball begins at 7 pm. Guests are encouraged to attend in a mask, and you can dress up as formally as you’d like. More than ten of the studio’s staff will welcome everyone, offer dance instruction, and put on a dance show around 8:30 pm. Light food and beverages will be provided, and the cost of attendance is $25 per person and $40 per couple.

The Downers Grove snow removal for the past storm was just horrible. I drove some of their primary streets [on Feb. 3] … and they were still covered by snow and ice. For example, Curtiss and on to Gilbert Street … I also drove Burlington Avenue from Westmont to Downers Grove, and the Westmont portion was virtually snow free … but when you got to the Downers Grove portion, look out! It appeared almost ignored. … We gave you a bigger salt dome – please use it. You have a new natural gas-powered plow truck – get it on the road. You have all the toys, but you don’t use them. … Downers Grove, they don’t have a disaster plan. They are a plan for disaster.

He likely will find pushback from members of his own Republican caucus, some of whom oppose any attempt to find more revenue over cutting spending.

Local lawmakers react

Rauner’s speech earned high praise from local Republican legislators and even received positive words from the other side of the aisle. Illinois Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno, R-Lemont, said she’s encouraged by Rauner’s early signs of bipartisan leadership. “It’s exciting to have a governor who wants to work with lawmakers on long-term solutions to the state’s problems,” she said. State Sen. Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, was part of the committee of lawmakers who escorted Rauner into the House of Representatives chambers to present his address. Rauner presented his first State of the State address Feb. 4 in Springfield. and his fellow lawmakers to improve Illinois’ business climate and boost job creation. “He’s got a plan to get our economy back on track, to get our budget un-

der control, and at the same time, to direct more money to our schools. Education is the most important thing we do in our state,” Nybo said. “I think he can accomplish a lot. I think

he is looking for partners. I am excited to be one of those partners, and I am ready to get to work.” Rauner’s commitment to government consolidation tapped into a major talking point for many local officials. State Rep. Ron Sandack, R-Downers Grove, hopes the state can mirror the success witnessed in DuPage County. “The DuPage County model has achieved an estimated $100 million in taxpayer savings,” Sandack said, “and I hope to see that effort extended statewide so that taxpayers everywhere can experience tax relief.” State Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, said she was “especially encouraged” by the governor’s pledge to consolidate units of government after she was part of the bipartisan effort in DuPage County. Conroy also agreed with Rauner’s focus on the state’s fiscal crisis. She said she’s committed to working with Republicans to pass a “fiscally responsible budget while preserving funding for education and other vital services.” “I look forward to hearing the specifics of Gov. Rauner’s plan and will continue to work with my colleagues in the House and Gov. Rauner to find balanced solutions to our state’s fiscal problems,” Conroy said.

In fact, the physical education instructor for Downers Grove School District 58 felt so good that she decided to become a Melt instructor to help others have the same positive experience that she encountered. On her feet all day as a physical education instructor – but also working as a Stott Pilates instructor and AFAA group fitness instructor – French, 51, had some nagging body aches and pain until she discovered Melt in 2010. “Melt is my self-treatment technique that I used daily to hydrate my connective tissue to relieve stuck stress,” French said. “It has helped my plantar fasciitis, hip, back and neck pain.” Cementing her fitness knowledge with the Melt Method has been a dream to empower others, she added. The Melt Method is a self-treatment technique developed by Sue Hitzmann, a manual therapist and exercise physiologist, according to the Melt website. The technique involves balls, sized from

The signs would be used for school announcements, crisis notification, weather-related closings, notification of drills in progress, government agency announcements and invitations to events, according to District 99 Communications Director Jill Browning. Mayor Martin Tully was on the village council in 2007 when the district first brought up the idea of electronic message boards that the council ultimately rejected. “While I struggle with the digital sign concept, technology has changed, things have changed for the better,” he said. “The most important thing is

DOWNERS GROVE – Community High School District 99’s pursuit of electronic message board signs at North and South high schools remained undimmed by the village council after its meeting Feb. 3. A motion during the meeting allowed further discussion for an amendment that would permit the signs in the campus-scale institutional and public district, also known as INP-2. As of Monday, the zoning ordinance prohibited electronic message board signs in all zoning districts. A vote on the amendment was scheduled for the council’s meeting Tuesday. The school district has been working with the village to begin the application process to rezone its two school properties from residential to INP-2. “District 99 has had an interest in digital content signage for almost a decade and we do understand the prohibitions regarding such signage in the village,” said Superintendent Mark McDonald at the Feb. 3 meeting.

“District 99 has had an interest in digital content signage for almost a decade and we do understand the prohibitions regarding such signage in the village. However, we believe our schools have unique and compelling communications reasons that are perhaps different than any other entity in our community.”

Warrenville Road. The move also will create 100 corporate and management positions that will need to be filled, Cassa said. According to the grocers’ website, its stores feature an “abundant produce department, overflowing with fruits and vegetables, fresh from the farm, often locally grown and much of it organic.” Natural meat raised without hormones; fresh seafood, bakery, natural and organic bulk food items; and gluten-free and dairy-free products also are available at Fresh Thyme. “It’s great to have not only a store here, but also the corporate headquarters here in Downers Grove,” Cassa said.

Commissioner Greg Hose didn’t feel the digital sign concept warranted further discussion, citing concerns for res-

The sign just doesn’t have the same impact,” Hose said. “In terms of the rezoning I am fine, in terms of the location of the South High sign, I am fine with that. But as far as digital signage, I cannot support it at this time.”

The company already has a new store underway that will open in the spring at 321 Ogden Ave. as part of a major Midwest expansion, Cassa said. Fresh Thyme plans to open 60 stores in six years, with 18 in the Chicago area, including the Downers Grove location.

Village of Downers Grove 1.630.434.5500 • www.downers.us Mayor Martin T. Tully Commissioners: Sean Patrick Durkin, Geoff Neustadt, Robert T. Barnett, Becky Rheintgen, David S. Olsen, Greg Hosé Village Manager David Fieldman The “Village Corner” is edited and published by the Village of Downers Grove. Any questions concerning the content of this page should be directed to the phone number referenced in the article. If a number is not listed in the article, please call the Community Response Center at 1.630.434.CALL (2255). Meeting dates, times, locations and agendas are subject to change. Check the Village website at www.downers.us and DGTV Channel 6 for the most current meeting information.

POLICE WARN OF LATEST PHONE SCAM The Downers Grove Police Department would like to alert our citizens to the latest telephone scam. A citizen contacted the Crime Prevention Unit and advised that they received a suspicious phone call at their home. The resident checked caller ID before answering his phone and was surprised to see his own home phone number displayed. The resident answered the call, but the caller then hung up without speaking. The technology exists that allows a caller to use a phony name and telephone number on your caller ID system. The typical way a scammer utilizes this technology is to display a financial institution or governmental agency on your caller ID. The scammer then gains your trust and attempts to lure you into providing sensitive financial information. Per the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), caller ID spoofing is illegal if it is used with the intent of defrauding, causing harm, or wrongfully obtaining anything of value. Persons receiving these types of calls are encouraged to contact the FCC by phone (1-888-CALL-FCC) to file a complaint. As with any other suspicious phone call, never provide personal and/or financial information to any incoming phone call. If you receive a call, hang up, and call the financial institution or governmental agency directly via the phone number given on your banking statement or the agency’s website.

COMMUNITY-WIDE NOTIFICATION SYSTEM The Village of Downers Grove has a Community-Wide Notification System. The Connect-CTY service allows the Village to record and send personalized voice messages across the community in just minutes, through a single phone call. Publicly available primary residential and business phones in Downers Grove have automatically been included in the system. Residents and businesses are encouraged to register additional devices (up to three phone numbers and two e-mail addresses) by which to be contacted. To add/change information, visit the Community-Wide Notification System link on the Village website, www.downers.us. If you do not have Internet access you may correct/add information by calling the Community Response Center at (630) 434-CALL (2255). Residents with call blocking services can make sure to receive the Village’s timesensitive calls by adding (630) 434-5500 to their approved number list.

MYTHS & FACTS ABOUT FLOOD INSURANCE Did you know that flood insurance is available to almost everyone in Downers Grove? We participate in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), and Class A policies will receive a 20% discount because we meet certain higher standards under the Community Rating System. Homeowners, business owners, and renters can even include contents coverage in their NFIP policy. Please visit FloodSmart.gov.

BUCKLE-UP YOUR VALENTINE The Downers Grove Police Department reminds you to "BuckleUp Your Valentine" during the holiday and throughout the year. Valentine's Day is about showing the ones you love how much you care about them. One easy way you can demonstrate your love is to buckle up and insist that everyone you love does the same anytime they are riding in a motor vehicle. Unrestrained or improperly restrained children riding in a motor vehicle are twice as likely to die or be severely injured in a crash. The single most important thing you can do to protect your children is to buckle them up properly, every trip, every time. Make sure your child safety seat is the right fit for your child and your vehicle. Downers Grove residents that need assistance installing their child safety seat can call Supervisor Tim Sembach at (630) 434-5636 to schedule an appointment with a certified child safety seat technician. On Valentine’s Day, and everyday – Buckle-Up Your Valentine.

BROOKFIELD – Directly across from the Metra rail crossing, on the corner of Grand Boulevard and Brookfield Avenue, sits 1-year-old Fuego, a quaint respite from the everyday. In a cleverly designed building, the traditionally decorated Fuego is a cantina in the truest sense, a handy place to stop for a margarita or a cold beer and some tasty Mexican classics. My friend and I grabbed a small table by one of the expansive windows in the relaxed space accented by stone. We began our meal with a basket of light and salty chips and salsa, and an order of the Ceviche de Fuego, a chilled blend of chopped shrimp, tomatoes, onions, peppers, cilantro and lime – lots of lime. Elegantly served in a tall martini glass, the seafood dish was a refreshing and tasty start to our experience. I opted for the carnita dinner, featuring slow-roasted pork sauteed with onions to create some oh-so-yummy caramelized edges. It’s like the Mexican answer to a classic pulled pork, with complex seasonings and just enough bite. My friend ordered the chili relleno dinner, a fresh poblano pepper filled with Mexican cheeses. It was enclosed in a flaky crust, similar to a puff pastry, baked to a golden brown. But the real star was the homemade ranchero sauce. Smoky and rich, this blend of tomatoes, peppers and herbs is cooked a long time – until it turns thick, deep red and delicious. (The chef really should bottle the sauce and sell it at the bar.) And although we were stuffed, the dessert menu was calling, so we ordered the churro bites. They were decadent and sweet, fried crisp and covered in a syrupy cinnamon sugar, with warm chocolate sauce for dipping. A variety of classic Mexican favorites, from tacos to flautas, rounds out the menu at Fuego. Quench your thirst

WESTMONT – A trio of Sentinels seniors made sure their final home game was a memorable one. Playing on senior night, soon-to-be graduates Emma May, Emily Schlacks and Mara Casper combined to score the Sentinels’ first 10 points, powering the home team to an early lead they would not relinquish for the entirety of a 49-41 victory over Wilmington on Thursday. “It’s a little sad knowing that I’ve played my final basketball game at Westmont,” Casper said. “But it’s nice going out on a high note and it was pretty special to have all the seniors in the starting lineup.” Casper opened the scoring with a 3-pointer on the first possession of the game, then knocked down another trey less than a minute later to give the Sentinels a 6-2 advantage. May and Schlacks then converted from close range and Westmont took a 13-9 lead into the second quarter. Seven Sentinels factored into the scoring as Westmont took a five-point lead into halftime and held a 36-31 advantage at the end of the third quarter. “We played very well as a team,” coach Mike McCord said. “We are by no means perfect – I think our team defense needs to improve – but for the past few games we have done a good job of spreading around the scoring.” Westmont’s seniors finished the game as strong as they started, as Casper led all scorers with 20 points and May chipped in five points and a whopping 17 rebounds. “Emma [May] is the hardest working player I have ever coached,” McCord said. “She is like the Energizer Bunny, she just keeps going, and going and going.” Casper will go down as one of the best girls basketball players to put on a Westmont uniform. PLAYOFF PREVIEW

Postseason tips off for Benet, DGN and DGS

Downers Grove North center David Edwards shoots over an Oak Park River Forest defender Jan. 23 during a conference game. Edwards recorded his first career double-double Saturday in the Trojans’ win against rival Downers Grove South.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The road to the state finals for 4A girls basketball teams starts with regional tournament games beginning Monday. Here’s the outlook for Benet, Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South:

Benet

Bill Ackerman backerman@shawmedia.com

Class: 4A Seed: 1 Regional: Joliet West Sectional: Oswego East Opening game: 7 p.m. Tuesday vs.

Aurora East or Joliet West Outlook: Benet’s big three have powered the Redwings to a 25-3 overall record and have the team eyeing a run to the state final. Senior Emily Eshoo is one of the top scorers in the area, averaging 18.7 points per game, while forward Emily Schramek has a 15.7 points-per-game average and junior Kathleen Doyle is scoring at a 12.8 points-per-game clip. The Redwings are the top seed in the Oswego East sectional and should have no trouble with either Aurora East or regional host Joliet West in the second round. The girls’ first big test will be either eighth-seeded Naperville Central or ninth-seeded Naperville North in the regional finals. Benet may then face fourth-seeded Oswego East, No. 5 seed Bolingbrook or upset-minded Downers Grove North in the sectional semifinals.

Downers Grove North

Class: 4A Seed: 12 Regional: Bolingbrook Sectional: Oswego East Opening game: 7:30 p.m. Monday vs.

Lockport or Plainfield North Outlook: The Trojans could be shorthanded when the postseason begins Monday. Leading scorer Jaida Green has been dealing with a stress fracture in her left leg and hasn’t played since a Jan. 27 game against Lemont. Additionally, Madison Farnsworth recently suffered a hand injury and is unlikely to suit up in the playoffs. Downers Grove North is 13-12 and 4-8 in the West Suburban Silver with one win in its past four conference games. But the Trojans have strung together back-to-back wins against Glenbard West and Downers Grove South, as senior Peyton Winters and guard Lauren Porcelli have shouldered much of the offense in Green’s absence.

Downers Grove North prevails against South in matchup of crosstown rivals Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com

Downers Grove South’s Kasandra Rugienius drives to the basket Jan. 12 during a home game against York. The 12th-seeded Trojans open 4A postseason play with a favorable matchup against No. 21 seed Plainfield Central. Should DGN advance, the girls will face regional host and fifth-seeded Bolingbrook in the second round. Oswego East and top-seeded Benet loom in regional finals and sectional semifinals.

Downers Grove South

Class: 4A Seed: 6 Regional: Romeoville Sectional: Oswego East Opening game: 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18 vs.

Romeoville or Waubonsie Valley Outlook: One of the most improved teams in the area, Downers Grove South finished in second place in the West Suburban Gold with a 10-2 conference record. The Mustangs are led by four-year varsity player Ava Porlier, who is averaging more than 13 points per game, and senior Vashae Easley. Sophomores Kiera James, Kasandra Rugienius and Addyson Wesolowski have all matured into regular starters, adding scoring depth and a defensive presence. DGS was awarded a No. 6 seed and a first-round bye and will play the winner of Romeoville (No. 11 seed) and Waubonsie Valley (No. 22 seed) in the second round. If the Mustangs make the regional finals, they will likely be trying to pull off an upset against third-seeded Oswego. Neuqua Valley, the No. 2 seed in the sectional, could face DGS in the sectional semis.

By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The Trojan boys put an end to Downers Grove South’s recent dominance on the hardcourt. For the first time since the 2007-08 season, Downers Grove North prevailed in a regular-season, crosstown rivalry game, defeating the Mustangs 66-53 on Saturday. DGN guard Jordon Kedrowski scored a game-high 24 points and center David Edwards recorded his first career double-double (12 points and 11 rebounds) as the Trojans turned a tightly contested first half into a comfortable victory. “The atmosphere was electric tonight, I didn’t really expect it to be that crazy,” Kedrowski said. “Just coming out to a packed gym with a bunch of Downers North and South fans is a really cool experience.” Both teams exchanged baskets in a frenetic first half that ended with Downers Grove North on top 16-13. But DGS quickly responded in the second frame, as a Denis Alibegovic 3-pointer gave the Mustangs their first lead. Kedrowski then seized momentum for the home team, knocking down consecutive treys before converting a three-point play that gave the Trojans a 25-17 advantage. “My teammates did a great job of finding me in open spots on the break,” Kedrowski said. “But credit Downers South, they are a hardworking group and did a great job of bottling us up after that.” Sophomore T.J. Clifford was the catalyst for the Mustangs’ ensuing run, sinking a game-tying 3 with 1:30 left in the second quarter then throwing down a furious left-handed dunk to

But in the third quarter, the Trojans used their size and inside-out game to their advantage. Back-to-back baskets by Edwards opened the scoring in the second half and swung momentum in favor of the home team. The 6-foot-7 center then converted a three-point play early in the fourth quarter to increase the lead to 49-42. “That was the most complete game I’ve seen Edwards play,” DGN head coach Jim Thomas said. “He was dominant on both sides of the ball and scored in double figures for the first time in his career.” A pair of Kedrowski 3s and several clutch free throws sealed the victory for the Trojans. Downers Grove North guard Myles Farley scored 12 points while Alibegovic paced the Mustangs with 22 points, 18 of which came from behind the 3-point arc. Both squads dropped conference games heading into the crosstown rivalry game. Downers Grove South lost to Hinsdale South 56-50 on Friday, while a buzzer-beating 3 propelled Glenbard West to a 54-53 win against Downers Grove North.

JORDON KEDROWSKI

By DAN SANTAROMITA CICERO – Both Downers Grove schools had wrestlers advance from the Morton regional Saturday, and now members of the Mustangs and Trojans will compete at the Downers Grove North sectional this weekend. Downers Grove South was second at the regional as Ahmir Hooks (126 pounds), Tyree Johnson (138) and Ryan Gurski (182) won regional titles, and Mark Leflore-Chapman (152), Ramy Abd (170) and Sergio Villalobos (195) also advanced to the sectional. Hooks, Johnson and Gurski qualified for sectionals last year, but none of them won a regional title. The DGN sectional has a number of top teams, so state spots will be hard to come by, but Hooks is hoping to embrace the underdog role. “It feels good,” Hooks said after winning the regional. “I just want to wrestle as hard as I can, cause an upset if I can. I have to try and play as much close as I can.” For Downers Grove North, Pat Walker’s title at 113 pounds was the highlight, but five Trojans in all advanced out of the regional. Freshman Nate Cummings (106 pounds), sophomores Austin Maher (145) and Sky Arend (182) and senior E.J. Phillips (heavyweight) also qualified for the sectional meet.
