A man who crashed his truck through a Coast Guard station in Grand Haven, Mich., on Feb. 8 has ties to Westmont and Downers Grove. Matthew L. Krueger, 34, was charged with false report or threat of terrorism and malicious destruction of property, according to a news Matthew L. release from the Grand Krueger Haven Department of Public Safety. The investigation has not revealed any link to terrorism or a terrorist organization, according to officials. The incident began at 6:07 a.m. when a man, who police believe was the suspect, called Ottawa County Central Dispatch. The caller announced he had a bomb in his truck and was driving into Coast Guard Station Grand Haven, officials said. After crashing his truck through the Coast Guard Station gate, the suspect then broke into the station and

ADOLESCENT VS. ELDERLY DENTAL PROBLEMS
JUDI STRAUSS, E.A.
Q: Do dental issues get better or worse as you get older? A: Every stage of life has its challenges and opportunities. That applies to dental issues as well. Dental health doesn’t necessarily get worse as you age, particularly if you have been attentive to your teeth all your life. Adolescents, for instance, have to deal with gingivitis, the gum inflammation that some researchers think is a by-product of hormonal change at puberty or the result of a typical teenage diet and poor oral hygiene. They may also deal with appliances their parents opt for to straighten their teeth. The elderly, on the other hand, deal with changes like receding gums, a condition that leaves the cementum that covers each tooth’s root exposed. Hence the saying, “long in the tooth” for a person who is aging. The exposed part of the tooth is susceptible to decay and to abrasion from brushing. Older adults who have not consistently practiced optimal oral hygiene could also be dealing with the problem of lost teeth. In addition, seniors are also prone to a potentially serious problem with wrinkling around the mouth, a condition that stems from skin that does not contain as much water and fat as a younger person’s does. Every age presents its challenges when it comes to oral health. The best way to be prepared for these challenges is to visit your dentist regularly and practice good oral hygiene all through your life.

could be important deductions for 2014. Since our out-of-pocked medical costs keep rising (and our incomes are less due to lower interest rates), you should check your expenses, including: • Medicare insurance and the drug premium • Insurance premiums - paid by you (after, not pretax) or deducted from your pension and Cobra costs • Non reimbursed medical and especially dental costs • prescription drugs • hearing aids and batteries • medical mileage @ 23.5 cents/mile • long-term care insurance
While medical expenses are only deductible over 7 1/2% of your adjusted gross income - now over 10% if under age 65 - many taxpayers are itemizing this year since their medical costs plus real estate taxes, contributions and sales tax deduction add up to more than their standard deduction.

The Westmont Police Department confirmed that Krueger lives in the 3800 block of North Park Street in unincorporated DuPage County near Westmont. Lt. Craig Mast of the Oceana County Sheriff’s Department said that the building was completely destroyed in a fire early Sunday morning prior to the incident at the Coast Guard Station. “After our investigation, our detectives obtained a four count felony warrant,” Mast said. Krueger was scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 11 and charged with first-degree arson, second-degree arson, arson preparation to burn property of $20,000 or more and arson preparation to burn dwelling, according to Mast. “It was a unique place, it looked like a 1950s-style service station prior to the fire,” Mast said. His motives and intent are unclear, officials said. Bond was set at $75,000 for the Coast Guard incident, and the arson warrant has a bond of $100,000.
By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – A local teacher is helping to educate students far outside the walls of her Westmont classroom. Laura Riley is contributing to the National Education Association Science Master Teacher Project, which assists exceptional K through 12 instructors in sharing their best practices online with educators across the country. The sixth-grade science teacher at Westmont Junior High School is
among 65 selected for the project from the more than 1,000 who applied. “It was a great honor to be accepted,” Riley said. “It really validated a lot of hard work that I’ve put in.” Riley of Downers Grove was selected after three rounds of interviews. She has been at Westmont Junior High for 24 years, as a home economics teacher for 10 years, before switching to science 14 years ago. In class, Riley focuses on developing skills and communicating clear goals to her students.

Presentation dates set for stormwater sales tax referendum SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA WESTMONT – Village residents will have multiple opportunities to learn more about Westmont’s upcoming referendum after dates were recently announced for several community presentations on the matter. “We want to make sure that voters are well-informed regarding this important topic,” Westmont Communications Director Larry McIntyre in a village news release said. “The village can neither advocate for nor against this referendum, so it is imperative that we do our best to provide factual information for our citizens to consider.” The village board opted last month to pursue a ½ percent sales tax increase to fund stormwater management and infrastructure improvements. Voters will weigh in on the measure April 7. The referendum requires a majority vote to pass. The cost of pursuing necessary stormwater projects in Westmont is estimated at $30 million. If approved, the tax hike would generate about $600,000 in revenue annually. Efforts to establish a long-term funding source for stormwater relief were initiated after the April 2013 floods.
“It is important to make clear that if a new revenue stream is not identified and dedicated for stormwater management and infrastructure improvements, then the growing flood issues that we have seen over the past decade cannot be addressed in the way we would like. ” Steve Nero Trustee and stormwater committee chairman
Should the tax be implemented, future village boards will not be able to redirect money received from it or increase its percentage rate, according to the release. “It is important to make clear that if a new revenue stream is not identified and dedicated for stormwater management and infrastructure improvements, then the growing flood issues that we have seen over the past decade cannot be addressed in the way we would like,” Trustee and stormwater committee Chairman Steve Nero said in the release. Westmont’s current sales tax is 7.25 percent for most retail stores and 8.75 percent for most places of eating. The sales tax in neighboring commu-
nities varies, and includes 7.25 percent in Clarendon Hills, 8.25 percent in Downers Grove and 9.25 percent in Hinsdale. “For more than a year, the village has been working on this initiative, and after considering all of the options, it was decided that this modest sales tax increase would be the best way to address this problem while having minimal financial impact on our citizens,” said trustee Jim Addington in the release. The village already has conducted referendum presentations for Maercker School District 60, the Westmont Lions Club and the Downtown Westmont Business Alliance, and will continue to arrange for more information sessions
St. Mary’s of Gostyn Holds A Successful International Fair Trade Market SPONSORED BY By Denise Freese Generous, thoughtful people are always looking for ways to help others. Volunteering, giving personal donations, and fundraising are ways to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate. Shopping for “Fair Trade” products is another wonderful way that consumers can help people in other countries who exist under dire circumstances and have little chance for improving their lives. Fair Trade, according to www.fairtradeusa.org, is a global trade model that includes certification so shoppers can quickly identify products that were produced in an ethical manner. For consumers, it’s a powerful way to reduce poverty through everyday shopping; for farmers and workers in developing countries, it offers better prices, improved terms of trade, and the business skills necessary to create high-quality products that can compete in the global marketplace, according to the website. Fair Trade allows farmers and workers to improve their lives and plan for their
futures; they can provide their families with medicine, shoes, clothing, books for school, and other necessities. Today, Fair Trade benefits more than 1.2 million farming families in 70 developing countries. St. Mary’s of Gostyn held an International Fair Trade Market on December 13 and 14, 2014. The community shopped for gifts created by disadvantaged farmers and artisans from more than 20 countries, including Guatemala, Peru, Ecuador, Kenya, India and Pakistan. Available items included alpaca gloves and hats, tree ornaments, mouth-watering fair trade coffee, tea and chocolate, along with musical instruments, puzzle boxes, games, toys, jewelry, nativity scenes, and decorative wall hangings made from unique and recycled items. St. Mary’s raised approximately $13,800 to help these farmers and artisans; buying Fair Trade products also provides fair prices and credit, fair labor conditions, direct trade, and environmental sustainability. For more information about purchasing Fair Trade products, contact Susanne and Vincent Donoghue, owners of Gracias Fair Trade, at donoghues-crain@sbcglobal.net.

on important matters like the COD board decisions. DuPage is not Cook County. Fishing for taxpayer money based on dubious rationales for the funding was egregiously amplified by the board both awarding the $760,000 “handshake” deal (contractually bound or not) and then naming the “teaching and learning center” after Breuder. As the view concluded “these payouts for failure have to stop.”

Illinois Senate Democrats announced the formation of a new subcommittee to investigate executive compensation at public institutions in a news release Feb. 11. The announcement comes in the wake of the fallout following the approval of a massive severance package for College of DuPage President Robert Breuder. Robert The subcommittee Breuder will be part of the Senate Higher Education Committee and will steer reform efforts and ensure tuition and tax dollars are used responsibly. It will have three members: Bill Cunningham, D-Chicago; Dan Kotowski, D-Park Ridge; and a Republican who has yet to be selected, according to John Patterson, director of communications for the Illinois Senate Democrats. “Taxpayers are demanding to know how we compensate administrators, why we are compensating them and what safeguards we can put in place to end the type of abuses we’ve recently seen,” Cunningham, who will head the subcommittee, said in the release. The issue was thrust into the spotlight when the College of DuPage Board of Trustees voted 6-1 to approve a $762,000 buyout for Breuder, who will retire March 31, 2016 – three years earlier than anticipated. The college will also name its new Homeland Security Education Center after him. The vote drew outrage from the public, as 400 people attended a board meeting in January about the severance package. Board Chairwoman Erin Birt said at the meeting the board quantified 1.5 years of Breuder’s salary and benefits when coming to the agreement. “This money could be better spent on providing an affordable, world-classcollege education for students. It could be used to offer much needed tuition relief for families,” said Kotowski in the release. “Taxpayers cannot afford to pay for six-figure golden parachutes, shooting club memberships and other lavish perks for public servants.”

Government consolidation, DuPage style, may be coming to counties across the state. Gov. Bruce Rauner signed Executive Order 15-15 to form the new Local Government Consolidation and Unfunded Mandate Task Force headed by Wheaton resident and Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti during a news conference Friday at the DuPage Water Commission in Elmhurst. Rauner called it an “exciting step towards turning our state around.” “We need to encourage the streamlining of local governments and of school districts to reduce costs and be good stewards of taxpayer dollars,” he said. “The [task force] will get the conversation started on how to streamline [and] end duplicative services and improve efficiency.” Rauner previously praised consolidation efforts in DuPage, most notably in his State of the State address Feb. 4. DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin, who said he will play a leadership role in the task force, spoke at the press conference, calling DuPage a laboratory for consolidation. The county

Charlie Smith (seated) celebrates his 99th birthday Jan. 29 at the Westmont Park District Fitness Club.
Looking for motivation to work out? Let Charlie Smith be your inspiration. The Western Springs resident, who works out at the Westmont Park District Fitness Club five days a week, just celebrated his 99th birthday. We think he’s definitely earned a piece of birthday cake. The drumbeat for some kind of intervention in the Robert Breuder retirement package continues unabated. State Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, introduced a plan to ban big severance packages like the $763,000 one Breuder is to receive. State Rep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo, has demanded an audit of College of DuPage’s finances. The silence from Breuder and the College of DuPage board in the face of this ongoing criticism is deafening. Adults let children of Jackie Robinson West down
What happened to the children of Jackie Robinson West is shameful. Those children played their best. They did everything they were supposed to do. The adults let them down! I hope those coaches are banned from ever coaching again. To them, it was more important to win than show the boys that honesty and integrity are what counts. Imagine the hurt the coaches have caused these boys. I just hope the boys can see this for what it is and not let it destroy their hopes and dreams.

Salt Creek Ballet celebrates 3 decades of dance SPONSORED BY
By Gina Kraman What started as a few ballet students pirouetting on a worn gymnasium floor in LaGrange, has blossomed into a nationally acclaimed dance company, with hundreds of students perfecting their moves at a state-of-the art facility in Westmont. Salt Creek Ballet (SCB) celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, and continues it’s two-part mission: to train students, and to give dancers high-level opportunities to perform. Founder Patricia Sigurdson had taught Chicago-area students following her training at the Royal Ballet School in London, and in New York with famed choreographers Frederick Franklin and Robert Joffrey. She also danced professionally with the American Ballet Theater. However she was compelled to bring her talents and classes to the western suburbs. Sigurdson began teaching students in LaGrange, and soon wanted to provide a professional-level performance experience. She felt that the western suburbs would benefit from and support a quality, classically trained dance company.
After generating support and funding, Sigurdson established SCB in 1985. Teacher Susanne Carroll Wren, with SCB for more than 37 years (even before it was officially established), recalls the early facility, which “consisted of one large studio, and one small one. We soon outgrew that, and developed the four studios we have today.” The staff grew also, adding employees including Christina Salerno, who had danced with the company, and now serves as SCB’s executive director. When Sigurdson retired in 1998, Russian dancers Sergey Kozadayev and Zhanna Dubrovskaya became artistic directors. This husband and wife team contribute their classical and contemporary ballet expertise honed on the international stage. Three decades of dancers have taken classes and performed at SCB, which is known for its elaborate productions, including the annual holiday classic, “The Nutcracker.” SCB has embellished “The Nutcracker” performances, and the company now owns and recently updated the set and costumes. Wren recalls how SCB previously rented sets and wardrobe, and even borrowed dancers, to perform in the early years.

Westmont snow removal wasn’t that much better than Downers Grove. They spend most of their time going up and down Cass Avenue in downtown Westmont. Sure, Cass Avenue is clear down to the pavement. But drive down the side streets a day or two after the snowstorm. You’re lucky if the plow went through once. I know people who live on the south side of town and whose streets were not plowed for a couple of days. Don’t give Westmont that much credit unless you only drive through downtown Westmont on Cass Avenue.

Music comforts DuPage Convalescent residents By NATHAN LURZ

nlurz@shawmedia.com Sometimes a song can make a world of difference. Residents of the DuPage County Convalescent Center get serenaded by songs ranging from “Bicycle Built for Two” to “Count on Me” by Bruno Mars by the center’ music therapist, Brenda Buchanan. Buchanan said she was driven into the field after seeing the joy it brought her mother when she was hospitalized several years ago. She has spent two hours with a wide variety of residents – including some of its lowest-functioning adults – Alzheimer’s patients and those with Parkinson’s – each Thursday and Friday since she was hired in September 2014. The longtime church organist and Schaumburg resident approaches each resident with the same enthusiasm as the last, trying to engage each of them personally. For those who can, she fills hands with maracas, drums and other noisemakers. For many who can’t, she goes around to each individual, dances with them, sings their favorite songs, asks them questions and tries to give them as much

The positive impact on patient well-being, she said, is backed by research. Music therapy has been found to help a wide variety of conditions, including dementia, Alzheimer’s, autism and more, according to the American Music
Therapy Association. “Music is good for so many things,” Buchanan said. “Music can be used as a social way of engaging, [it can] alleviate pain.” Buchanan was brought on board by the center’s recreation department
thanks to funding from the DuPage Convalescent Center Foundation, said Linda Linford, foundation coordinator. The foundation is dedicated to increasing quality of life in the center, and when 80 percent of the residents receive some kind of public aid, entertainment through the center is sometimes the only kind many get. “I talk to the medical aides upstairs who said the gentlemen on their floor completely change after she is with them,” she said. “Their whole body is impacted, they have more energy, they feel better.” Many of those she works with remain unresponsive during her performances, but Buchanan said she doesn’t mind. “The times I do get them to smile or respond are sometimes even better than the ones who do it all the time,” she said. “I like the challenge of figuring out what can help them enjoy life for a little bit.”

Several local representatives are looking at legislation regarding Breuder’s buyout and others want to prevent similar severance packages in the future. Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, filed two resolutions related to the buyout. The first is a request for the Illinois Auditor General to perform an audit of the college’s state funding from the past three fiscal years. After Ives’ request, the college asked the auditor general to move forward with the audit prior to receiving legislative approval. Ives also is sponsoring a resolution urging trustees to reconsider the buyout and the building naming. At the January meeting, several members of the public expressed an interest in naming the building after Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller, a Wheaton native awarded the Medal of Honor after dying in combat in Afghanistan. Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, announced earlier this month he would introduce legislation known as the Breuder Rule, which would ban excessive severance packages at public institutions. compromising the important services local districts provide. The governor’s order comes days before he presents his budget proposal to the General Assembly in the face of massive debt and revenue problems. He said cutting spending would only play a part in his efforts to reform Illinois. “As I’ve said, we need to grow our way out of our problems,” he said. “We can’t just cut our way out of our problems. Purely cutting alone without structural, pro-growth reform won’t get us there.” Sanguinetti said the governor would appoint 15 representatives from across the state to the task force in the next month. The group will lead a study to determine which agencies and unfunded mandates to recommend the governor examine. The task force will be required to submit its findings to the governor and the General Assembly by Dec. 31, 2015, at which time it will be dissolved, according to a news release from the governor’s office. Illinois averages nearly 54 units of local government per 100,000 residents, Sanguinetti said. She said too many layers of local government aids corruption and heightens taxes.

Casper, Sentinels rally past Lisle in regional semis AURORA – Westmont leading scorer Mara Casper delivered with the season on the line in the Class 2A regional semifinal game against Lisle on Feb. 11. With less than 25 seconds left in the fourth quarter and the score knotted at 40, the four-year varsity player came off a double screen and received an Annie Carlson pass, drilling a 3 from between the left baseline and top of the key and powering Westmont to 43-40 victory against the rival Lions. “That’s my favorite spot on the court to shoot from,” Casper said of the game-winner. “I was excited the screen worked; we ran that play before against Lisle and it didn’t work.” Head coach Mike McCord initially drew up a different play during the preceding timeout but then called an audible right before the game resumed. “I called a different play, but just all of a sudden I thought, ‘no, let’s do this one,’” McCord said. “If we would have run what we were initially supposed to run, she would have gotten the ball on this side [the right side of the basket]. For some reason I thought that we might get a better shot if we double screen down on the other side.” The third-seeded Sentinels had to battle back in the final quarter to pull within striking distance of the second-seeded Lions. Westmont led a majority of the first and second quarters, maintaining a 23-18 halftime advantage before Lisle’s Kate Twaddle and Sarah Mogensen scored the first four points of the second half When Lions freshman point guard Natalie Takahashi converted a fourpoint play to give the Lisle a 30-27 lead at 4:43 of the third quarter, it looked as if the No. 2 seed might run away with the win. But Westmont junior Amanda Prete kept the Sentinels within striking distance by draining back-to-back 3s from the right side of the arc to cut the deficit to 35-33 at the end of the third quarter. “My first reaction was, ‘Oh my gosh I can’t believe that just happened,’” Prete said of the two 3-pointers. “You can’t think too long about it. Sometimes if you have an open look, you just have to give it your best shot.” The Lions held onto the lead for the first five minutes of the of the fourth quarter until Casper chased down a missed free throw by Carlson, swung

Kedrowski excels with new Downers Grove North team By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Jordon Kedrowski has taken his game to another level in his only season on Downers Grove North boys basketball team. The senior, who transferred from Neuqua Valley to DGN at the start of the school year, quickly established himself as the Trojans’ most consistent scorer, and through 19 games he leads the team in points per game (12.4) and 3-pointers (109). Additionally, the 6-foot-2 guard is the team’s primary ball handler and has matured into an offensive catalyst, leading area teams with a 5.7 assist-per-game average. “The transition has gone pretty smooth, and it’s helped that the coaches implemented a new offense this season, so the rest of the team was learning a new system as well,” Kedrowski said. “We came in and had a lot great practices to start the season. I credit my teammates for that, they were a huge help.” Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com Kedrowski also attributes Downers Grove North’s Jordon Kedrowski works the ball around the his success to the Downers York defense Thursday during a conference game in Downers Grove. Grove North coaching staff,
especially head coach Jim Thomas, whose tough love approach has helped him mature as a player and a person. “He’s hard on me, he gets on me a lot in practice,” Kedrowski said. “But I think it’s because he sees potential in me; he knows I want to play at the next level and he just wants me at my best on every single play. He’s a fantastic coach, I’ve learned so much from him that goes beyond basketball.” Thomas’ tutelage of Kedrowski goes back farther than this basketball season. The coach first took Kedrowski under his wing when the guard joined his Mercury Elite AAU team this past spring. “We had some really nice players on that team, and Kedrowski was the point guard that set up the offense and distributed the basketball,” Thomas said. “So he’s really taken on a new role with this team [Downers Grove North]. He’s still a great passer, but he’s shown that he’s an effective scorer, too.” Like Thomas, who played guard for Augustana College, Kedrowski hopes to contin-

He is currently talking to coaches at the Division-I, DII and DIII level, but will not make a decision if and where he will play college basketball until after the season. “I don’t want to make it about me, it’s about the team at this point,” Kedrowski said. “We are focused on getting as far as we can in the playoffs this year, then after I will figure it out.” The Trojans could not beat York for a second time this season, falling to the Dukes 63-49 on Thursday. Kedrowski led the way with 15 points while Colin Kramper chipped in 11. DGN goes on the road to face Oak Park River Forest at 7:30 p.m. Friday before squaring off against Nazareth Academy at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Downers Grove North gymnastics duo prepares for state run By MATT LE CREN editorial@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Downers Grove North gymnast Ellia Leger had to wait a long time to perform her uneven bars routine Feb. 11 at the Hinsdale Central sectional. But the patience paid off as Leger ended an even longer wait – her school’s 10-year drought between state qualifiers. The senior was the last competitor on bars and she rocked her set for a 9.35 score, good enough for fourth place and an automatic berth at the state meet at Palatine High School. Leger’s bars routine completed her sectional meet and also allowed her to advance to state in the all-around competition. Her 36.775 was good for fifth place. “I’m just really excited that all my hard work that I’ve

Leger is North’s first all-around qualifier since Krista Lewis and Casey Panko in 2003. “I was hoping for bars and I wasn’t really expecting to make beam and all-around,” Leger said. “I just couldn’t be more excited and happy.” Downers Grove South sophomore Kayla Carlson was in a similar mood after qualifying for the first time. Soulier: What happened in the fourth quarter that enabled the team to engineer a 18-0 run? Porcelli: I think that we brought a lot of energy and started to play really well as a unit. We have been talking about moving as a unit and everyone moving together instead of everyone doing their
own thing. I thought at the beginning of the quarter we started moving and working together.
Soulier: You held them to less than 10 points in all but one quarter. How important is it to set the tone on defense? Porcelli: I think that’s more important than offense because you can’t win a game without defensive stops. The offense will come as we work our butts off on defense.
Soulier: How has the offense changed without Jaida Green in the lineup? Porcelli: For me, I am just
doing my best to breakdown defenses by dribbling and getting to the hoop. As a team, we have been doing a good job of moving the ball and getting scoring contributions from throughout the lineup.

Lauren Porcelli has a penchant for breaking down opposing defenses and getting to the basket. DOWNERS GROVE – Tyree Johnson crossed one wrestling goal off his list Saturday. Then he immediately made a new one. The Downers Grove South junior won three consecutive backdraw matches at the Downers Grove North sectional tournament and finished fourth at 138 pounds to lock up his first state tournament berth. “It feels good,” Johnson said. “I haven’t been down state in my three years, and I feel like when I get down there I should accomplish my goal and place top five in the state.” While this will be Johnson’s first trip to state, he has a good idea of what to expect when the tourney begins Thursday and how best to prepare for success. “Morning practices, more intense practices, keeping my conditioning up and stay focused,” Johnson said. “I’m expecting really tough competition.” Downers Grove North’s Pat Walker locked up his second straight state tournament berth with a 2-0 win in a backdraw semifinal at 113 pounds, then improved his state seeding with an 8-3 win in the third-place match. “It feels pretty good,” Walker said of getting back to state. “I just know what’s going to happen [at state] and I know what to expect.” North’s E.J. Phillips won his first three sectional matches to reach the finals at 285, where he finished second
