aschier@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – A spike in salt costs has Westmont set to spend more than originally budgeted after a village board vote Thursday. Trustees unanimously approved allocating an additional $45,000 for salt purchases as part of the consent agenda at their most recent meeting. The village planned to spend $110,000 on salt this winter, according to village documents, on the assumption salt would be available at $55 per ton. However, the price increased because of higher-than-anticipated delivery costs after there was a change in the location from which the salt was transported, Acting Director of Public Works Mike

Ramsey said. The village is now paying $75 per ton, documents stated. So far this year, Westmont has bought 1,440 tons for about $106,000, according to Ramsey. About 400 tons were used solely to respond to the blizzard that blanketed the Chicago area Feb. 1 with about 19 inches of snow. After Thursday’s vote, the village can buy an additional 560 tons if needed, but Ramsey said the money may not be spent this year if there are no

more snowstorms. This winter, Westmont has seen about 35 inches of snow so far, compared to about 50 inches in total last year, according to Ramsey. While the village has spent more on salt this winter, it used more last year – including 1,200 tons in surplus from the previous winter and about 800 tons bought for about $41,000. “This has definitely been an easier winter,” Ramsey said. He said he hopes to see salt rates go down next year, and if gas prices stay low, so will delivery costs. In addition, the village would like to reduce the amount it pays for salt next year by buying through the county, as well as the state, when historically Westmont has only bought salt through the state.

Safety Is Critical For Successful Dancers SPONSORED BY

By Denise Freese Dance is both an art form and a terrific method of exercise. Dancers can make it look easy, but in order to be a successful dancer you need to be aware of several behind-the-scenes factors that help keep dancers from getting injured. Like any other form of exercise, dancing requires a lot of energy and stamina. Hydration is essential, both before and after the dance session. Dance requires your muscles to work hard, so warming up and stretching is critical to avoid pulling or cramping a muscle. A cardiovascular warmup followed by static and dynamic stretches is optimal. Flooring in the studio or on stage is also important for dancer safety. Traditional wood floors, or any flooring without a true floating wood subfloor, are not safe; a floating subfloor with marley is the best surface. These floors are made

to absorb and return energy during dancing, which decreases the impact on a dancer’s body and helps with leaps and jumps. Dancewear is very important. If your clothing interferes with your dancing, it’s a safety hazard. Avoid hooded sweatshirts and tops or pants that ride up or down. Dancers must also wear proper shoes that fit the genre of dance. Ballet pointe shoes, in particular, must be fitted by an expert. Avoid dancing in socks or bare feet - socks are too slippery, and bare feet may not glide evenly on the floor. Dance shoes are designed to cushion and protect your feet while supporting your movement. Proper alignment and technique are essential as a dancer’s skills progress. To avoid developing poor techniques or becoming injured, it’s critical for a dancer to not participate in classes that are above their ability level. Top studios will have a Physical Therapist on call who specializes in dance as a resource for dancers.

BENIGN TUMORS Q: How serious is a tumor in the mouth? A: The good news is that most tumors that appear in the mouth are benign, meaning noncancerous. Any unusual growth in the mouth, however, should trigger a call to your dentist. The most common type of growth in the mouth is called an “irritation fibroma”. It appears as a smooth-surfaced, small pink mushroom attached by a stalk to the tongue, inner cheek, or lip. It is generally caused by biting or sucking on the spot where it develops. The fibroma often occurs where a small space between the teeth allows for the sucking or biting on tissue. If the “irritation fibroma” is a recurring problem, the dentist may recommend a small, fixed bridge to close the gap. Another relatively common benign growth is called a “papilloma”. It also is mushroom shaped, but has an irregular, white surface. A papilloma will appear of its own accord. The usual course of treatment for either of these tumors is to excise them. As a rule, these tumors do not require a biopsy, a procedure that will determine whether they are cancerous. Though these tumors are non-cancerous, not all tumors are. Once again, whenever you become aware of an abnormal growth or spot in your mouth, see your dentist immediately.

WESTMONT – If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That seems to be the motto at Bishop’s Famous Chili, a downtown Westmont mainstay that’s been serving the same recipe for 90 years. “It never changes,” said Mary Ellen Hope, a fourth-generation manager of the business and a Downers Grove resident. Legend has it that in 1925, Hope’s great-grandmother and namesake, Mary Bishop, was working at a restaurant on Chicago’s southwest side called Ole’s Chili, when she changed the recipe, was fired and opened the original Bishop’s down the street. Over the years, as the chili legacy was passed down from generation to generation, Bishop’s opened storefronts in Forest Park, North Riverside and Westmont. Today, the Westmont eatery, established in 1974 and located at 250 N. Cass Ave., is the only Bishop’s still in business. In its nine decades, the restaurant has gained renown across the Chicago area. Patricia Klug – Bishop’s owner since 1970 and Hope’s mother – said the shop welcomed celebrity customers ranging from Richard J. Daley to Ernie Banks in its Chicago days, while Ron Santo visited the Westmont store. “We still have old timers,” said Klug, referencing patrons who come from Chicago and remember the original location. Bishop’s has also been featured on the Food Network program “Food Finds” and WGN’s “Chicago’s Best.” There are several things that set Bishop’s chili apart, Hope said. A smooth, creamy,

Ex-employee faces up to School officials respond to 15 years on theft charges alleged radio station fraud SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA GLEN ELLYN – College of DuPage police have arrested a former WDCB employee on allegations he committed financial crimes against the school. John Valenta, 65, of 1757 Lucky Debonair Court, Wheaton, has been charged with one count of theft in excess of $100,000, a Class 1 felony, which, according to a news release from the John DuPage County State’s Valenta Attorney’s Office, is punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Valenta, a 30-year employee of WDCB who left the college in 2014, was arrested Thursday on a warrant for the charge, which followed a 13-month investigation, the release stated. In October 2013, an internal audit conducted at the station allegedly revealed an “abnormally large number of costly invoices for radio station engineering services” from Broadcast

Technologies, a company Valenta owned, according to the release. Many of the invoices were for repairs to the radio transmitter, which were Valenta’s responsibility, the release stated. An investigation revealed from June 2006 to December 2013, Valenta allegedly submitted Broadcast Technologies invoices to the college for merchandise and labor for work purported to be done at WDCB, according to the release. The investigation also revealed the labor and merchandise listed on the invoices, totaling $200,829.77, were never delivered to the station, the release stated. “The allegations in this case clearly illustrate the concept of simple greed,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin stated in the release. “The defendant had a good job for more than two decades before he allegedly decided to illegally supplement his income at the expense of the College of DuPage.”

At Thursday’s Board of Trustees meeting, Lynn Sapyta, assistant vice president of financial affairs, made a presentation to clear up “misstatements” she’d heard about fraud at the WDCB radio station since it was reported in December 2013. The presentation came the same day John Valenta, a 30-year college employee as the station’s engineer, was arrested on a charge of theft. According to a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, Valenta allegedly submitted invoices from his company, Broadcast Technologies, for labor and merchandise that was never delivered to the school, stealing more than $200,000. There’s a master at work at Westmont Junior High School. Sixthgrade science teacher Laura Riley is contributing to the National Education Association Science Master Teacher Project, which helps exceptional kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers share their best practices online. She was one of 65 instructors chosen from more than 1,000 applicants. That’s good news for Westmont students. Voters have several more opportunities to get informed about an important stormwater issue facing the village on the April 7 ballot. A referendum will ask residents if they want the village to increase sales tax a 0.5 percent to fund stormwater management and infrastructure improvements. Three more community presentations will be held – two on Thursday and another Monday. Visit http://shawurl.com/1qzl for times and locations. The kids in our emergency shelter recently made valentines for Gov. Bruce Rauner that sent a painful message: “Where would they go if there wasn’t a Family Shelter Service?” The moms willingly volunteered their kids for the project when they learned that Family Shelter Service, along with other social service organizations, likely will face major COMMUNITY funding cuts from the state VOICE this year. Maureen When the kids arrived, they were eager to help in McGuire the effort and excitedly went to work. Even the youngest ones seemed to sense the urgency of their mission. When their creations were complete, their art was remarkable … their words profound. But how long would their enthusiasm last if they continued to live in a violent household? How could their talents be nurtured in a home where they walked on eggshells, fearing the always unpredictable violence. One child said it best in her valentine: “I like shelter because I feel safe when I go to sleep at night. I am away from all the bad stuff.” Family Shelter Service has been helping children like these for 39 years, children who were living under the threat of violence daily. But what if Family Shelter Service wasn’t there? Nearly 12,000 calls to our hotline each year would go unanswered. About 240 women and children would have no shelter from the violence in their homes. Almost 1,100 people would not have a court advocate by their side when they need an order of protection. At Family Shelter Service, these families find a bridge to safer futures. Their needs are short term: a chance to get back on their feet and plan for a safer future. With nowhere to go, a short-term problem becomes a chronic one. Family Shelter Service is part of a vital network of services throughout DuPage County that are dedicated to helping those who are most vulnerable. These social service organizations are the fabric of this community, they are where we volunteer our time and the causes we support. They are the source of service projects where our children learn what it means to give back. Through our commitment to community, we help to heal others while at the same time giving ourselves a sense of belonging … and we offer each child the opportunity to live free of violence so they can grow to their full potential. If you would like to learn more about these funding cuts and how you can add your voice, visit www.familyshelterservice.org.

Please pick up after pets

In Downers Grove, a lot of streets only have sidewalks on one side. As good citizens, we share our area so people can walk their children and pets. It is not nice to see dog business left in the middle of the sidewalk. Please be considerate.

No consistency for signs

Downers Grove has issued a variance for signage at Art Van Furniture before they are open for business and contributing sales tax income to the village, and to Sara Lee for a nonretail location. Yet, they are using our tax dollars to fight the long standing 80-plus-year-old historic business, Leibundguth Moving & Storage.

Don’t destroy the integrity

In Downers Grove, there is a unique subdivision known as Clyde. Decades ago, this community was planned and developed with a circular street. One hundred residents were attracted to purchase homes and become pioneers in this historic district. They love it as it is and have never asked for it to be changed. ... Hey, Downers [Grove] do-gooders, back off and leave the Clyde homeowners alone. They will surely ask for destruction of their community if they want it, but so far they have not.

The Downers Grove Village Council would not agree to hear from the voters/taxpayers by referendum regarding a massive village redevelopment project, but now they want to survey voters after the election. Let me get this straight, the village of Downers Grove proposes to waive building permit fees, which means the village is paying $140,000 to move Mr. Tillotson’s house and destroy or severely trim 20 maple trees on Maple Avenue. We already have a historic district with brick streets and signs. Maybe we could spend the money on a couple of squad cars, emergency equipment or any number of worthwhile items that could benefit the village. I’m sure glad elections are coming up.

Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton voted against accepting the audit in December 2014 because of concerns over the finances at WDCB. Sapyta said auditors typically allow for a 3 percent to 5 percent margin of error – more than the 1.4 percent of the station budget allegedly stolen on average per year. The fraud committed at the college fell “far below” the standard material threshold, which was how the school was able to get a clean opinion, Sapyta said. Members of the public also had claimed the total of the fraud was four times the station’s annual revenue. Sapyta said four times the annual revenue for the station would be close to $8 million. “We are nowhere near that number,” she said. Valenta previously worked in a similar capacity for Elmhurst College,

according to a Chicago Tribune investigation. During that time, he was charged with committing theft at the college and later pleaded guilty. There also had been discussion that the College of DuPage had been contacted by Elmhurst College officials after Valenta was convicted. Sapyta said the college has no record of that contact. “Wherever that message went, it fell on deaf ears,” she said. In a statement released Thursday, the college announced it would be contacting an independent law firm to look into the communication between Elmhurst College and the College of DuPage. Sapyta said the college’s accounting was a mess when she arrived in 2010. “I could not believe how bad the finances were here,” she said. Checkbooks were often unbalanced,

bank reconciliations did not occur and invoices were a year and a half behind, among other issues, she said. Sapyta said she hired a whole new staff, and it took them 18 months to fix all the accounting issues and put new controls in place. “This fraud went on for 16 years. It was caught in 2013 by this team, not the team back then,” she said. Hamilton continued to stand firm against trusting the financial information, and said she would vote against any financial documents that needed to be approved by the board until financial controls were fixed. She said the arrest of Valenta showed there were problems at the college. “That was due to a lack of controls on our radio station,” Hamilton said. Trustee Kim Savage said she was confident in the information provided by Sapyta and felt the proper controls were in place to avoid future fraud.

Elmhurst said it informed officials about Valenta’s conviction, but College of DuPage officials deny the claim. In a statement Thursday, college spokesman Joe Moore said the school has hired a law firm to find any communications between the two institutions and that the former WDCB manager has said he did not know Valenta owned Broadcast Technologies.

• FRAUD

Continued from page 12 The total fraud, she said, was $440,000, which was allegedly stolen over the course of 16 years. That comes out to $28,000 annually and accounts for 1.4 percent of the radio station’s yearly budget. In terms of college expenses, it makes up 0.02 percent of revenues. The station has operated at a loss since 2008, including a $363,000 deficit in the 2014 fiscal year, Sapyta said. It had $1.9 million in revenues in 2014. After the fraud was brought to the attention of the college, the school reached out to Crowe Horwath, which handles the college’s audits. Crowe Horwath gave the station a clean audit, which several members of the public have criticized in recent months.

education than in previous years. About two weeks ago, Manar joined with state Sen. Jason Barickman, R-Bloomington, to announce new legislation developed with the cooperation of the Vision 20/20 coalition of educators. That legislation ties school funding to actual educational outcomes and true district costs, Barickman said. Nybo said efforts to rewrite the school funding formula is something he’s keeping an eye on but hardly the only thing in terms of education. “There’s other parts of the [state] budget that affect K-12,” Nybo said.

Local funding

Another aspect of Rauner’s budget proposal, a reduction to state aid to local governments, is causing some apprehension. Rauner proposes nearly halving the Local Government Distributive fund, which is currently around $1.2 billion. The Rauner team said the money makes up about only 3 percent of all local funding. Critics of the move, however, said that’s a total number that doesn’t take into account the impact on some communities that rely more heavily on state money than do others.

can be tax savers and tax problems this year. Here is why.

The Good news: • You can get a child credit of $1000 if your Adjusted Gross Income is under $110,000 • You can get a big Education Credit which can be refundable if your college age child has a 1098T and your AGI is under $180,000

The Bad News: • First time filers in IL MUST get a paper check so you should use your address since checks do not get forwarded • If your children (dependents) are not covered by health insurance all year you may get a health care tax penalty • If you claim your child as a dependent, he/ she cannot claim themselves. If you or they do their taxes and claim them, your return will be rejected by the IRS and you can lose the big education credit.

Suburban lawmakers say there’s a long way to go before they can say how funding for school districts and other local government will shake out. In addition to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s sweeping changes in state spending announced last week, a pair of bills that would change how school funds are distributed are being negotiated. While the governor called for a $300 million boost to primary education, he also proposed cuts to higher education and in aid to local government. “We had a meeting [Feb. 18], coincidentally, with the Illinois Association of School Boards and other education related associations that were in Springfield for the budget address,” state Sen. Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, said. “The good news for the western suburbs and for all K-12 is that it’s one of the areas that has been spared from the cuts that the governor is proposing.” Nybo said expectations are not high that much of that $300 million “will end up coming back to the communities that I represent, or other communities in DuPage County.” A new school funding formula, however, could have a lot to do with how local schools are funded. Lawmakers

are trying to draft bills that base funding on at least two factors that don’t always go hand-in-hand: economic need and measurable performance. “I have the privilege of representing some of the finest districts in Illinois. Other districts should emulate, not defund, districts doing a better job,” state Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard said. “You help those who are not achieving their goals through reform before you talk about increasing funding to those districts.” The first Senate bill filed this session re-opened the conversation about school funding. Rep. Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill, sponsored The School Funding Reform Act of 2015. Manar’s bill seeks to send more dollars to districts with the greatest economic need. Manar said he’s made changes to the bill based on bipartisan discussions with fellow legislators and other parties, including school officials. He says SB1 would distribute 92 cents of every dollar on the basis of need while including a method of comparing regional costs, a more accurate measurement of poverty and additional money for districts with high special education needs. Manar and co-sponsors said the plan, to work effectively, would need about $500 million more pumped into public

Ruggiero began his career in the office as a law clerk in 1986. Taking over his spot will be Tim Diamond, who recently celebrated his 25-year anniversary with the office. Diamond has spent his entire legal career with the state’s attorney’s office, starting as a clerk in 1988. He was most recently deputy chief of special prosecutions. Rauner, however, also has called for property tax freezes and reforms in local spending. State Sen. Don Harmon, D-Oak Park, said, “I think it’s a real broadside to middle class families across Illinois if we’re going to try to balance our budget by increasing local property taxes and making college less affordable and more out of reach for middle class families.” But many legislators made a point after Rauner’s speech to mention the legislative session is hardly over, and they noted the governor’s office and the legislature are coequals. They called Rauner’s budget a blueprint or starting point and predicted changes. Republican state Rep. Ron Sandack of Downers Grove, a former mayor, said he liked the governor’s approach. “My thoughts are we got an honest budget, finally one where we’re not spending more than we take in, which is a rarity around here,” he said. But Sandack also acknowledged a lot of legislators will be facing interesting talks with constituents, and those discussions will follow them back to Springfield. “Consensus is going to be tricky because some people are going to be asked to vote against their districts and seemingly take very difficult votes,” he said. House, has been respectful of Rauner but also has not closed the door on additional state revenue. “You have to understand that if you reduce the amount of money going to the local governments you’re putting pressure on the local government budgets – those are budgets that normally support police departments, fire departments, garbage pickup, water service, sewer service,” Madigan said. The Legislature and the governor can work together, the speaker said. “Out of all of that will come a work product at the end of May and, hopefully, it will be a good, sound plan that will put … state government on a path to restoring fiscal stability [and] at the same time not unduly hurting people that depend upon the government for services.”

other things that parents can expect are for their children to learn to make the right choices, and achieve ahead of their peers. Service to the local and global communities is also a vital part of formation at St. Petronille School. Each year Service takes the older students off campus to Churchill Park in Glen Ellyn to do restoration work, and out to Aurora to prepare and pack foods for an organization called Feed My Starving Children. Closer to “home” an ongoing and in-house food drive called “Friday Foods” sees the gathering and delivery of non-perishable food items each week to the neighboring Glen Ellyn Food Pantry. It is this type of service project that teaches students that hunger is a problem not only during the holiday season, but all year ‘round; and that serving others is a practice that should be built in to our day-to-day lives. As the logo proclaims, St. Petronille School, like other Catholic Schools, does teach more! Their formula for success seems to lie in the partnership between parents and teachers; and the climate of faith in which the educational, spiritual, and leadership formation process takes place.

t. Petronille School is a kindergarten through Grade 8 Catholic Elementary School. Located within walking distance of the downtown area of Glen Ellyn and the Station for the west line of the Metra train, St. Petronille School is serving more than 540 students and their families this year. “St. Pet’s” educates the whole child, and serves students of a wide variety of learning styles. An important element in the education of students here is the prevailing emphasis on leadership formation through service to others. St. Petronille School is one of the 48 Catholic elementary schools in the Diocese of Joliet, which spans a geographical area from Bensenville to Kankakee. Their logo boasts the words, “We Teach More.” And because more is taught here, parents are able to expect more. Beyond teaching Math, Science, Social Studies, and many other advanced and core courses, teachers also lead meaningful and open classroom discussions about faith, values, and spirituality, providing children with an early opportunity to explore things about the world and themselves—things not found in textbooks and lesson plans. recent ranking of America’s best careers bodes well for students at Midwestern University. US News and World Report recently published its “100 Best Jobs of 2015 listing, ranking careers based on a combination of factors that include financial compensation, the balance between professional challenge and stress levels, and opportunities within the various fields. Five of the top 15 careers represented on the list are part of Midwestern University’s graduate healthcare education offerings, including dentistry, which was ranked first overall thanks to salary, low unemployment, and work-life balance. Midwestern’s College of Dental Medicine-Illinois is one of only three dental schools in Illinois. In addition to dentistry, other Midwestern programs that ranked in the US News and World Report list’s top 15 careers include osteopathic medicine, physical therapy, physician assistant, and occupational therapy. Since Midwestern’s founding in 1900, the University has gradually expanded its healthcare career offerings, creating programs in 10 colleges across two campuses in Illinois and Arizona. verest Academy Lemont is an independent Roman Catholic grade school of academic excellence for grades prekindergarten through 8th grade. An Everest Academy education cultivates the faith formation, character development, academic learning, and heart of service of each of its students. Addressing all these components of the child through the educational method of Integral Formation®, the mission of Everest Academy is to educate the next generation of Christian leaders who will transform society. Everest students and graduates make a difference in their families, community, and country. The past several months Everest Academy students have had numerous opportunities to enhance their oral presentation skills. Between mid-October through the end of January during Catholic Schools

Week, students have discovered, explained, analyzed and mastered material in a variety of ways. The Poetry Contest, the National Geographic Geography Bee, the Science Fair, the Spelling Bee, and the Catechism Contest have all provided excellent opportunities for learning. ransitioning to a senior living community can be filled with mixed emotions from everyone involved. You may have many questions. Is it really necessary at this time? Will we get the help and care from the staff when we need it? Will my loved one like the other residents and make new friends...? The answer to all these questions is yes. New friends are made all the time. We witness it every day here at Lexington Square. Most caring communities take time to ensure their caregivers are extremely helpful and at your service. It’s stressful and difficult for a love one to accept that they need more help with daily activities. They often feel a sense of loss. They’re experiencing loss of independence, loss of their home, and loss of the ability to perform basic tasks. It’s best to respect these new emotions, and be sympathetic to their situation. Fear of the unknown can intensify any other emotions they have. Over time, as they adjust, these emotions often turn to joy and excitement as they experience how beneficial community life can be. Caring for an aging parent is one of the most difficult tasks you can ever undertake. An illness or debilitating hip injury can lead to your parent needing help with laundry, bills, grocery shopping, or getting to and from medical appointments. Your relationship with your family and friends begins to suffer. Worse of all, the relationship with your parent suffers. Once you become a care giver the parent child relationship takes a backseat. Adult children caring for their aging parents are becoming more popular as well. According to Pew Research, 30% of adult children today say their parent needs help handling their affairs. However, there are steps you can take to make the task of being a caregiver much easier.

Neuropathy Recovery I Workshop

New Solutions to your Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy?

FREE

f you suffer from a single one of these torturous symptoms- numbness, tingling, burning or sharp nerve pain, then read on. A new breakthrough treatment could change your life. Neuropathy can affect every part of your life - walking, sitting, sleeping, socializing, your ability to enjoy your relationships and so much more. If you have tired “everything” (Anodyne therapy, physical therapy, Lyrica, Neurotin or other meds) without getting the results you want then this may be the most important information that you ever read. There is a simple reason that most treatments fail, because at best they only cover up your symptoms and do not help your damaged nerves. Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that affects people in every walk of life. It is estimated that 20 million Americans and 60% of diabetics suffer from this disorder. There are many kinds of neuropathy, the symptoms of which include burning, tingling, weakness, numbness, paralysis, and dull to excruciating pain - especially in the hands and feet. Although many neuropathies have no known causes, neuropathy is often associated with other conditions. Examples are: Diabetes, shingles, toxins, autoimmune disorders, bulging discs that compress on nerves, spinal stenosis, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and poor nutrition. Statin drugs and chemotherapy can also cause neuropathy. For the last three years Dr. Susan Kelenyi, DC of Glen Ellyn, IL has worked extensively with peripheral neuropathy patients. Dr. Kelenyi describes peripheral neuropathy as damage to the nerves, which transmits information from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. “This can result in pain, loss of feeling, and inability to control muscles, such as difficulty with walking. As with any other condition, there is no “one size fits all” remedy for those suffering from neuropathies and treatment may vary depending on the cause and severity.” However, many individuals can and do find relief using natural remedies. And this is where Dr. Kelenyi steps in. Of the many causes of peripheral neuropathies”, says Dr. Kelenyi, “ a major one comes from a metabolic condition. You cannot drug your way out of a metabolic condition. It requires a change in lifestyle.” Dr. Kelenyi says, “Diet is crucial when addressing peripheral neuropathy, especially in diabetics and autoimmune disorders. Harmful foods to be avoided include alcohol, sugar, processed foods, fast foods, junk foods, sodas of all types, foods sprayed with pesticides, and trans-fatty acids. Sweeteners and additives contained in diet soda and processed foods such as MSG and aspartame can negatively impact the nervous system.” As a Board Eligible Chiropractic Neurologist, Dr. Kelenyi performs specific metabolic and neurologic tests to help determine what is causing the problem. There are a few primary types of neuropathies: Large or small diameter or both as well as motor. If jerking is involved then it can be as much a problem in the brain due to trans-neural degeneration as it is in the peripheral nerve. A thorough and comprehensive exam ensures an accurate diagnosis. Dr. Kelenyi states that her peripheral neuropathy recovery program is a combination of different cutting edge techniques and protocols. “We use revolutionary breakthrough protocols in the treatment of Peripheral Neuropathy… one of the therapies offered is Horizontal Therapy which is the latest, breakthrough in the science of electro-medicine and the most advanced and effective form of bioelectric treatment available to date. I’m very proud to be the first in the area to offer this to my patients ...pain management without drugs or surgery to get lasting results.” Additional therapies may include: oxygen, vibration, spinal decompression, cold laser therapy along with brain balance therapies to create a layered approach to “wake up” the nerves so they can function again and re-educate nerve pathways that have gone “hay-wire”. Dr. Kelenyi says, “Our solutions are non-drug, non-surgical approaches, that are researched based and based on prior clinical success. The reason we achieve excellent outcomes is because we take both a metabolic and neurological approach in our program.” She says it’s a very rewarding way of practicing. “We get chronically ill people coming from all over the Chicagoland area, even out of state, to our clinic. The most important thing for these patients is results. We get results.”

FRIDAY, MARCH 6TH AT 11:00AM

Ask yourself… • Has your condition affected every part of your life? • Have you tried “everything” (Anodyne therapy, physical therapy, Lyrica®, Neurotin®, or other medications) without getting the results you want? • Do you suffer with other secondary symptoms such as falling, dexterity, muscle atrophy, etc.? • Would you rather ix the underlying problem rather than cover it up with drugs?

Topics to be discussed • What is and what are the main causes for Peripheral Neuropathy • Diabetes & Peripheral Neuropathy • If you are taking “statin” drugs - what your doctor doesn’t tell you could hurt you • If your nerves are damaged what does that mean for the rest of your body • Why your lab results do not tell the whole story • How you can live pain free with a clinically proven program

Culinary adventure awaits at Dao Sushi & Thai, open for lunch and dinner in Oakbrook Terrace.

I like to consider myself a sushi connoisseur, and I can wholeheartedly say that the Dao rolls hold their own against some of the best sushi restaurants in the western

suburbs. For me, the highlight of the evening was the Bears roll, a perfectly balanced, textured bite of sushi that exploded with flavors of avocado, shrimp and soft-shell crab. The tempura combo included lightly battered pieces of

shrimp, onions, sweet potato, zucchini and eggplant, and was served with a soy dipping sauce. The chicken pad Thai was a savory mix of long, thin noodles sauteed with egg, scallions, bean curd and peanuts, garnished by cabbage.

Both entrees were generously portioned, and splitting one would have been more than enough after an appetizer and a flight of sushi. The service was attentive, courteous and efficient: Our water glasses were always more than half full, and idle plates were removed promptly. With appealing aesthetics and ambiance, Dao proves to be an inviting destination on two culinary fronts.

OAKBROOK TERRACE – Finding a restaurant that delectably delivers on its promise of multiple cuisines in one menu can be an arduous task. Far too often, restaurant owners spread the bill of fare too thin by offering a wide array of dishes from a number of countries, most of which fall short of the precedents set by single-focus sushi bars, Mexican restaurants and Brazilian steakhouses. But Dao Sushi & Thai bucks that trend. Billed as a restaurant that specializes in both Japanese and Thai food, Dao’s Oakbrook Terrace location not only fulfilled its promise, but exceeded my expectations. As we sought refuge from a bitterly cold evening, Dao’s ambiance and decor made my companion and me forget the temperatures outside. Upon entering, we immediately took note of the crowded bar and lounge area, which was furnished with a 15-foot black stone bar top, with additional tables. As we were led to our seats – a semicircle booth nestled in one of two cozy dining rooms – we passed a 5-foot Buddha statue, an impressive fish tank and a sushi bar with two chefs. We sat down, promptly ordered edamame and king crab rangoon as starters, and then spent the next 15 minutes dissecting the menu. The appetizers were delivered in under 10 minutes. The edamame arrived warm and portioned with just the right amount of salt, and the crab rangoon dumplings were some of the largest I have ever encountered. The three-page menu – with everything from soups and salads, to signature rolls, house specials, rice dishes and a select array of Thai noodle entrees – can be daunting to anyone unfamiliar with the two cuisines. But overall, it is very similar to what you would encounter at any high-end Japanese and Thai restaurant. We settled on a tuna roll (six pieces), a Bears roll (eight piec-

Turnovers sink Sentinels in regional opener

By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com LISLE – Westmont head coach Craig Etheridge knows every possession is valuable in the playoffs. And on Monday night, the Sentinels squandered too many trips up court in the second half, falling 5234 to IC Catholic in a Class 2A Lisle regional quarterfinal game. “Turnovers have been our Achilles’ heel all season,” Etheridge said. “We have had a really hard time protecting the basketball. I think about half of our turnovers tonight were unforced – travels, passing the ball to a guy that’s guarded rather than pass the ball to the guy that’s wide open. “That’s been a problem for us all year, we’ve tried to improve upon it, but unfortunately it came back to bite us tonight.” The sixth-seeded Westmont boys (9-19) jumped out to an early lead in Monday’s opening-round playoff game. Trailing No. 3 IC 7-2 early in the first quarter, Sentinels’ sharpshooter Jack Rebellato drilled three straight 3-pointers as the underdogs ended the quarter on a 15-4 run. Strong low-post play from Kyle Domin, Quintin Brown and Marcus Mott-Larson helped Westmont pad it’s lead in the second quarter, and the Sentinels went into halftime up 22-15. But in the second half, IC Catholic’s full-court press agitated Westmont’s ballhandlers, forcing several turnovers that led to uncontested

With less than two minutes left in the third quarter, IC regained a 26-24 advantage and never looked back, outscoring the Sentinels 18-2 in the third. “Although they put the game away in the second half, we never gave up and kept fighting,” said Domin, who finished with six points and 18 rebounds. Rebellato scored a teamhigh 12 points in his final game in a Westmont uniform. The team also will say goodbye to seniors Quintin Brown, Marcus Mott-Larson, Austin Loehman, Sean Alexander, Carlos Antons, Bobby Medlicott and Anthony Pacione. “It’s going to be hard to replace Jack [Rebellato], he’s a fantastic shooter and he works really hard,” Etheridge said. “They are a great group of seniors, they are good leaders and a lot fun to be around.” But Domin, as well as fellow junior starters Adam Doll and J.P. Leagogo, will be back in the fold next season. “It’s something to build off of,” Etheridge said. “I think all three of them showed signs of improvement down the stretch. So it’s a good place to build from, but we still have a long way to go.”

Benet (20-7) will wrap up the regular season tonight against Carmel before setting its sights on a second consecutive trip to the state tournament. After losing center Sean O’Mara to graduation last fall, it seemed as if the Redwings might undergo a rebuild this season. Instead, the Redwings retooled, shifting from an offense that was dominated by low-post play, to a more uptempo one led by guard tandem Colin Bonnett and Dan Sobolewski. The team will likely finish second in the East Suburban Catholic, one of the most competitive conferences in the area. The second-seeded Redwings begin the playoffs with a first-round bye and will face the winner of Monday’s show-

ers Grove North boys basketball team. Heading into the year with a roster laden with returning starters, many considered the Trojans a sleeper pick to contend in the West Suburban Silver. But injuries and inconsistent play dashed the Trojans’ conference title hopes, as the boys won just two games in the West Suburban Silver. Still, DGN rattled off eight straight victories in the middle of the season and won the championship at the Romeoville Christmas tournament, proving the team can play up to tough competition. The Trojans received the No. 12 seed in the Aurora East sectional and open regional play with a favorable matchup against 21st-seeded West Chicago on Monday. Should Downers Grove

passed, and the Mustangs’ young guns are giving fans reason to hope. After graduating seven seniors from last year’s roster, sophomores Denis Alibegovic and T.J. Clifford turned in breakout performances this season by leading the Mustangs in scoring. While DGS might be a year or two away from putting together a substantial playoff run, opposing defenses will have to plan accordingly for the Mustangs’ stellar shooters. Downers Grove South will host a regional, and the team hopes the home crowd can help pull off an upset against No. 13 Hinsdale South. The Mustangs could face fourth-seeded Hinsdale Central in the regional semifinals and Willowbrook in the regional finals. Lyons Township is the top seed in the sectional.

The junior forward collected a team-high 18 rebounds and added six points during the Sentinels’ regional quarterfinal game against IC Catholic. After missing the first three months of the boys basketball season because of a torn tendon on one of his fingers, Kyle Domin returned to the court and provided Westmont with a dominating presence in the low post. The Sentinel forward grabbed 18 boards and six points in a regional loss to IC Catholic. Domin, the Sears Hardware & Appliance Athlete of the Week spoke with Suburban Life Sports Editor Alex Soulier about recovering from the injury and his plans for the offseason.

Soulier: Were you injured during the football season? Domin: Yeah, I tore a

tendon in my finger during our [football] game against Plano, but I played through it and was able to finish the season. I ended up having

surgery and it kept me out for a majority of the basketball season.

Soulier: Was it difficult to rehab, stay in playing shape, then join the varsity basketball team? Domin: It was harder than

I expected, I’ve never had to rehab a finger. It’s also a mental battle, and the toughest part was staying motivated and staying in shape.

Soulier: The team built an early lead tonight thanks in part to your low post play. What did you see from IC Catholic in the first half? Domin: Everything was working for us, our offense was clicking and our guards were able to get into open lanes, and I was trying to do my part and grab some rebounds and hit couple shots.

Both Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South girls basketball teams stumbled in regionals, bowing out of the Class 4A playoffs. After a first-round bye, the sixth-seeded Mustangs faced regional host Romeoville on Feb. 18 with a spot in the regional finals on the line. A dominating low post presence helped Romeoville jump out to a 15-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. But DGS battled back in the second frame, as a Kiera James offensive rebound and putback tied the game at 20 with 3:30 left in the half. James then hit a layup on an ensuing possession to give the Mustangs a one-point lead. “We came out a little nervous and that led to some sloppy play with the ball,” DGS head coach Lyndsie Long said. “In the third quarter, we took control of the game, but turned the ball over too much and let them back in the it.” After trailing 27-24 at halftime, Downers Grove South went on 13-2 run to take a 41-37 lead into the final eight minutes. The game was up for grabs in the final minutes, but Romeoville capitalized on several DGS turnovers and won 52-48. Romeoville went on to lose 36-29 to No. 3 see Oswego in Friday’s regional championship game. Vashae Easely led DGS with 13 points against Romeoville, while Addyson Wesolowski chipped in 10 points and Kiera James added eight. Although she was dejected by her team’s porous playoff performance, Long did not hesitate to call the season a success. “It was a phenomenal season,” Long said. “Nobody expected our record to be what it was and we showed a lot of people the talent that we had.” The Mustangs were one of the most improved girls teams in the area, finishing in second place in the West Suburban Gold with a 10-2 conference record. The team will say goodbye to four year varsity player and leading scorer Ava Porlier, who recently signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Valparaiso. Easely, the Mustangs’

But in just two seasons, Long has transformed the basketball program, as sophomores Kiera James, Kasandra Rugienius and Addyson Wesolowski have all matured into regular starters this season and are expected to return next year. “I think the future is very promising for us,” Long said. “We just need to keep emphasizing to the girls that basketball is more than a four-month sport. It takes a lot of work in the offseason. And I think we are building that mindset in our program.” On the other side of town, the Downers Grove North girls basketball team advanced from a regional quarterfinals with a win against Plainfield Central, but could not overcome No. 5 seed Bolingbrook in a Feb. 17 the regional semifinal game. “Bolingbrook is a strong defensive team,” DGN head coach Stephan Bolt said. “We knew they were going to come

after us and put a lot of pressure on our ball handlers.” Neither the Trojans nor Bolingbrook could find their offensive rhythm in the first quarter, as the two teams combined for 15 points. Trailing 20-18 at halftime, Downers Grove North scored nine points in the third quarter and five points in the fourth, losing 44-32. Senior Izzy Greenblat led the Trojans with 10 points while center Peyton Winters added six points and 12 rebounds. DGN finished the season with a 14-14 overall record with a 4-8 mark in the West Suburban Silver. The team will graduate two starters, Greenblat and Winters, as well as Ashley Wojciechowski and Ashley Bihun. But team captain Lauren Porcelli and leading scorer Jaida Green will be back in the fold next season, as will starting sophomores Colleen and Brigid Miller and regular contributors Megan Geraghty and Madison Farnsworth.
