SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA WESTMONT – A Westmont man is charged with multiple counts of child pornography possession after a search warrant was executed Friday at his home, according to a news release from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.

Rylan S. Malis, 28, of the 700 block of West 65th Street, was arrested Friday and charged with four counts of possession of child pornography, a

Class 2 felony, the release stated.

Detectives from the county’s Sexual Predator Electronic Exploitation Division Unit conducted an online investigation in reference Rylan S. to the downloading of Malis child pornography on the Internet, according to the release, with the assistance of the Wheaton Police Department.

Illinois Reads was introduced by the Illinois Reading Council – an organization that provides support and leadership to those who promote and teach lifelong literacy – in March 2013, according to www. illinoisreads.org. Each year, the program offers a new list of books by Illinois authors for six different age levels: birth to 4-years-old, kindergarten to second grade, third to fifth grades, sixth to eighth grade, high school and adults.

Tammy Potts, Illinois Reads committee chairwoman, past council president and literacy coordinator at the DuPage County Regional Office of Education, said the initiative previously has been launched in Springfield in conjunction with the Illinois Reading Council Conference each March. But this year’s conference was moved to Peoria in October to avoid conflicting with Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers testing.

WESTMONT – Whether the storyline involves six puppies riding in a car or a librarian kidnapped by a 10-year-old, Westmont will be the first community to host an event promoting a statewide initiative encouraging residents of all ages to read books by Illinois authors.

The 2015 Illinois Reads: A Reading State of Mind initiative will launch at 10 a.m.

April 18 at Westmont High School, 909 Oakwood Drive.

The event will feature 22 Illinois authors who will participate in book signings and talks; story time for children; and appearances from Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White, the Jesse White Tumblers and members of the 1985 Chicago Bears Super Bowl team, according to an Illinois Reads news release.

Westmont Junior High School Vice Principal Amy Quattrone and Media Specialist Sheila Ruh are in the process of organizing the event.

“I think it is going to be a long-last initiative that will unite Westmont, as everyone in Westmont is being brought together to create and host the event,” Quattrone said.

“It will bring exposure to an amazing community and the amazing people we have in Westmont.”

Rauner’s budget raises concerns as child poverty levels rise

nlurz@shawmedia.com Area nonprofits are closely watching the governor’s office and state legislature as they could face big cuts in state funding despite DuPage County’s ongoing child poverty levels.

Leaders and members of more than a dozen nonprofits came together Thursday as the Voices for Illinois Children organization unveiled its Illinois Kids Count 2015 report, detailing the extent of the state’s and county’s child poverty.

Though there were harrowing numbers included – most notably a 10.5 percent child poverty rate in 2012 – most of the conversations revolved around state funding potentially drying up.

“Illinois is at the crossroads of the future – it’s a future that’s at risk and we need to consider what kind of state we’ll be,” said Carol Simler, executive director of homelessness nonprofit DuPage Pads. “We need to ask ourselves and our political leaders – will our social and economic policies help all children succeed and not let those children that live in poverty fall through because of inaction?”

Illinois’s finances, calling it “his inheritance,” but said the drastic cuts in his recent budget proposal put the future at risk for the more than 600,000 children across Illinois who are living in poverty.

According to the report, the number of children living in poverty in DuPage County increased 137 percent from 1999 to 2012, compared to 39 percent statewide. Family incomes also dropped by 15 percent in DuPage between 1999 and 2012.

GLEN ELLYN – Legislators are waiting for the College of DuPage to prove its commitment to a state audit of the school’s finances.

The audit was proposed by state Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, after the college Board of Trustees approved a $762,000 buyout for its president, Robert Breuder. Ives wanted the state Auditor General to look at how the school has spent state funding during the past three years.

Ives introduced a resolution in the state House of Representatives, which gained traction and is currently sponsored by 57 representatives.

College Treasurer Tom Glaser announced Feb. 3 the college would agree to the audit and wanted to move forward with it. But the audit would have to be paid for by the college, according to legislators. So far, legislators have not heard from the Board of Trustees about whether or not it will agree to pay for the audit. Fourteen legislators sent the college a letter last week asking them to address the issue.

“In order for this [audit] to occur, however, we need the college to enter into an agreement that they will not only pay for the audit but also comply with the rules of the audit as given by the Auditor General,” the letter stated.

Trustee Kathy Hamilton called on the board to schedule an emergency meeting this week to address the audit payment. The board, as of Monday, had not announced an emergency meeting, and Chairwoman Erin Birt did not return requests for comment on the matter.

“With more than $170 million in the bank, there is no question that College of DuPage can afford to pay for the state’s investigation of Dr. Breuder’s performance as our chief executive officer,” Hamilton wrote in an email to Breuder and Chairwoman Erin Birt.

College spokesman Joe Moore said Monday the board has not decided whether or not it will pay for the audit.

The Advanced Ballet students at Pure Vibe Dance in Westmont, IL have the distinguished honor of being taught by one of the best in the ballet world. Marcella Ducsay, a former Prima Ballerina, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the studio.

“Dancing came naturally, as my physique is very pliable,” said Marcella. “I started walking at 5 months, running at 6. Everybody knew I would have something to do with movement.” She continued, “As a dancer, I enjoyed class because it perfected my technique, I felt my muscles working and my brain shut everything else out; only music and dance, perfection and logic were present.”

To Marcella, teaching is how she gets young men and women to learn to connect to the music and to the audience. “It takes enough pruning, giving, coloring, that I get to do in class and in rehearsal that opens their gifts up for everyone to see,” she said. While she will soon add classes for intermediate students, she currently works with advanced dancers.

“They amaze me with their dedication, their willingness to open up and try new things. The longer I teach them, the more I know their hopes and desires, and I feel blessed to be able to guide them in the right direction.”

ly, lawmakers are influenced by the fact that when they are dealing with pension reform they are dealing with their own pensions, too,” he said. “I think those who have opted out of the pension system will be less generous.”

Rauner has proposed reforming the system by reducing future earned pension benefits. A separate plan pushed by legislative leaders that would curb cost of living adjustments will soon be considered by the state Supreme Court.

“I didn’t go into politics to get a paycheck for the rest of my life,” said state Sen. Tom Cullerton, D-Villa Park. “I went in to politics to make my community a better place. I think it is important for people to remember why our constituents elected us to office – to serve the public and their interests.”

State Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, said defined contribution plans such as 401(k)s are superior to defined benefit programs such as pensions. The government worker version of a 401(k) is a 457 Plan.

Breen enrolled in a state-sponsored 457 Plan where only the money he orders taken from his paycheck is invested.

“I like the idea of actually owning my retirement savings,” he said.

Four years ago, state Rep. Tom Morrison walked into a state office and announced he didn’t want a pension.

“I got a blank look in response. The General Assembly has an incredibly generous pension plan, and I was told I was the first legislator to choose not to participate in more than 14 years. I Ron Sandack guess I was a trend-setter because today one-sixth of the General Assembly doesn’t participate,” the Palatine Republican said.

Indeed, documents obtained by Illinois News Network through the state Freedom of Information Act found 37 lawmakers have opted not to participate in the General Assembly Retirement System.

State Rep. Kathleen Willis, D-Addison, said she opted not to take a pension so she could be more objective when dealing with state pension reform.

“While we are doing pension reform, I found strongly that I shouldn’t

Both Gov. Bruce Rauner and Comptroller Leslie Munger also have opted not to accept state pensions, which can prove costly to taxpayers.

For example, although Illinoisans recently voted Pat Quinn out of office, they are paying the former governor $137,000 a year. Quinn began drawing the pension his first week out of office in January.

His pension is based on his time as governor, lieutenant governor, treasurer and as an aide to former Gov. Dan Walker.

State Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, called pensions the biggest budget issue in the state and said she doesn’t want to add to the problem.

“I don’t believe I deserve a pension on the backs of hardworking taxpayers,” she said.

Illinois state pension systems are the worst funded in the United States with a $111 billion shortfall.

As more lawmakers opt out of the state retirement systems, it will inevitably affect overall pension policy said Jim Nowlan, a former political scientist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Join your township to help fight flooding As the days grow longer, we feel winter’s cold grip give way to the warmer days of spring. This is a reminder to prepare for the March and April showers that will bring May’s flowers. Some of these showers are heavy rainfalls that can cause local flooding.

The township tries to avoid these floods by cleaning baCOMMUNITY sins and inlets on the unincorVOICE porated township roads. Once that first rain hits, these items become obstacles that block the ends of culverts, causing water to run over the tops of driveways and roads.

If you have one, look at the ends of your culvert pipe to make sure it is clear of debris. Five minutes of prevention now can save hours of cleanup down the road.

Twice a year, the Downers Grove Township Highway Department provides brush pick up to our unincorporated residents. Here is a list of the dates and times.

Electronic recycling is an important environmental program that the township has been doing long before state laws existed to encourage its practice. In 2014, the township recycled more than 88,216 pounds of electronics. Unfortunately, costs have increased to provide this valuable service. That is why we will gratefully accept donations to defer the cost of our program. Donations can be made in person at our garage on the day of the event. All proceeds go directly to our electronic recycling expenses.

Once again, the community is rallying around Westmont resident Stacey Ledwon, who will host a third annual St. Baldrick’s event Sunday at Papa Passero’s to raise money to fight pediatric cancer.

Participants ask for donations and then have their heads completely shaved. Ledwon, whose daughter died from brain cancer in 2009, hopes to push the three-year total to more than $100,000 raised. No hair never looked so good.

Elmhurst city officials are in the final stages of considering the installation of an electronic billboard on the Palmer Drive underpass. Such a sign is visually unpleasant and conflicts with the hometown feel Elmhurst strives to maintain.

Use a mouth guard at night to keep from grinding your teeth during sleep. Visit your dentist regularly.

One of the potential cuts could come from the state’s Medicaid program, which saw a 127 percent increase in DuPage child enrollment between 2005 and 2013.

Dr. Ed Pont, a pediatrician at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital and chairman of the government affairs committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Illinois Chapter, said the program has made a world of difference to many of his patients.

There are some legislative districts where close to one of every two children receive Medicaid assistance.

“There is no such thing as an undeserving 4-year-old,” he said.

According to the Voices report, low-income families make up more than half of the total enrollment in Illinois Public Schools. More than 88 percent of the families at the West Chicago KinderCare receive state or federal funding, said KinderCare Director Jennifer Robertson, who called that “a devastating number.”

Should some of the proposed cuts go through, parents would have a hard time affording the early childhood resources her school provides.

Madelyn James, project director at Voices for Illinois Children, called for organizations across DuPage County to come together to ask for a balanced approach at solving the budget problems.

“If they’re going to make choices, don’t make them on the backs of working families and children,” she said.

With the program gaining momentum, Potts said the committee decided it was time to promote the initiative throughout the state.

Ruh, who is a council member, brought Quattrone to meet with Potts to discuss allowing Community Unit School District 201 to be the first school district to launch the initiative.

“What I’m particularly excited about is that Westmont is creating a community event that we are going to be able to duplicate in other cities in Illinois because we want other cities around the state to be able to have this kind of opportunity,” Potts said.

Each year, a different district will host the Illinois Reads kickoff, Quattrone said, which leaves the responsibility of establishing the foundation of the event with District 201.

“Since Westmont is serving as a template, other districts will come and ask us how we ran ours and will use what we created to build upon in future years,” she said.

Quattrone and Ruh began planning and gathering sponsors for the Illinois Reads event in early February by hosting a meeting with about 25 community leaders and representatives, including those from Westmont’s

police and fire departments, village, local businesses, parent-teacher organizations, chamber of commerce and tourism bureau, special events corporation and District 201.

“We have been meeting and forming different committees,” Quattrone said. “We are really united in the cause and are trying to push it throughout the state.”

In addition to the event, the initiative will be promoted in Westmont through book clubs, an essay contest for elementary to high school students, student ambassadors to create awareness about the initiative to the public and a summer reading kickoff for junior high students to read an assigned book by one of the Illinois authors.

“I think the adult members have embraced this, too, with the Westmont Rotary Club, PTOs and senior citizens sponsoring book clubs so that everyone of all ages is getting involved in reading, which is really unique,” Ruh said.

Illinois Reads will conclude with the 2015 Family Read Night, an annual statewide event to encourage families to read together, according to the Illinois Reads website. Ruh said communities throughout the state will host their own events that day, Nov. 19, including the Westmont Public Library.

DOWNERS GROVE – Midwestern University opened its doors to area high schoolers March 3 during Health Sciences Career Day at the campus.

The high school students participated in hands-on programs with university faculty and students

to learn about a variety of health career fields.

Topics addressed included osteopathic medicine, anatomy, pharmacy, physician assistant studies, dental medicine, speech-language pathology, physical therapy, occupational therapy and biomedical sciences.

Edwards House’s future is in jeopardy Advocate for historic home balks at village proposal

By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – A three-way deal that would help save the historic Edwards House has hit a snag after being approved March 3 by the village council.

The village has been working on a three-way agreement with Tillotson and FFM-DG Development LLC, which is planning to build a condominium complex on the site of the house.

To avoid the house having to be torn down, Tillotson offered to move it from its current location at 942 Maple Ave. to a property he owns at 743 Maple Ave.

He wanted the village to cover the costs required to move the house to its new location, which are expected to total $133,000.

According to documents Tillotson provided to the council, moving the house with financial assistance from the village would result in a $168,000 loss due to work he would need to do to prepare the site.

“We’ll put a substantial amount of money in, but we need a little bit of help,” he said.

However, at the March 3 meeting, the council unanimously approved a deal that would provide a $123,560 loan to Tillotson to cover the move.

The loan would not accrue interest, and would be required to be paid back over a 10-year period.

But Tillotson said he’s not interested in the agreement based on how

PULP Q: What is the pulp of the tooth and what is its importance?

A: The pulp is at the center of the tooth. It is made up of the tiny nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue that is the life center of the tooth. People generally refer to the pulp as the “nerve” of the tooth because of its extreme sensitivity when exposed. Through tiny openings in the tips of the roots of the teeth, the pulp is in contact with the veins, nerves and arteries of the jaw, and with the nervous and circulatory systems of the body. As the pulp goes, so goes the tooth.

The pulp provides, for one thing, the nutrients that contribute to the ongoing formation of dentin, the highly calcified material under the enamel that accounts for some 75 percent of the bulk of a tooth.

As we age, the pulp decreases in size. If the pulp becomes infected, i.e. a cavity lets bacteria in, the dentin will not get the nourishment it needs.

Gradually, the dentin will dry out and the tooth will become brittle. Root canal therapy is the method used for removing damaged pulp. If dead pulp is not removed, the tooth may turn yellow, grey or black. So, one of the main goals of an oral hygiene program is to protect the tooth’s outer layer of enamel, and inner dentin, so as to safeguard the pulp. much the renovation of the site and home is estimated to cost.

“In this case, the problem is we’re already in the red a fair amount,” he said.

Mayor Martin Tully said he was disappointed the two sides couldn’t reach an agreement, but said the village is not going to give up on saving the house and that he believes progress is being made.

“It looks like the gap’s growing smaller,” he said.

Tully said the developers hope to move forward with the project by May, but the village might not have two months to seal the deal.

“It takes time to prepare a site and it takes time to prepare a move,” he said.

Tillotson agreed he also will continue to work on saving the house.

“We understand that it’s not an easy answer. It’s more complex than that,” he said. “We really want this to happen.”

Mike Behm of the Friends of the Edwards House group presented the council with another solution. He proposed using private funds – which have not yet been raised – to move the Edwards House to an open spot at 5540 Main St. After the move, the village would buy the property and sell it to a private developer, who would renovate the home.

Commissioner Sean Durkin said he had concerns over the risk of the house not selling. Commissioner Becky Rheintgen shared a similar worry.

“I think it’s a wonderful idea.

I think the hesitation is the village owning property,” she said.

Ken Lerner, chairman of the Pierce Downers Heritage Alliance, said the organization has collected $5,000 in donations to save the house.

But not everyone was in favor of moving the home. Scott Lazar, who lives in the 800 block of Maple Avenue, said he doesn’t see a compelling public benefit.

“It is in no way a must shave for the village, and we’re acting like it is,” he said.

Lazar said it feels wrong to be giving public money to a private project, and this could potentially open the

ENJOY ST. PATRICK'S DAY -- SAFELY The Downers Grove Police Department is participating in a year-long initiative that focuses on impaired driving and seat belt enforcement on specific holidays, including St. Patrick's Day. This initiative is in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and is funded with an IDOT traffic grant totaling $22,000. The grant funding must be used specifically to cover manpower hours for these holiday traffic enforcement campaigns.

As part of the St. Patrick's Day holiday emphasis, officers will be working saturation patrols that target impaired drivers and seat belt violations.

Whether you simply enjoy the company of friends, attend a parade or make a trip to a local pub, if a friend is showing signs of being impaired, don't let them get behind the wheel.

• Plan a safe way home as part of your party plans.

• Designate a sober driver.

• If you have had a couple of drinks and are feeling "buzzed" don't drive because YOU ARE IMPAIRED. • Call a taxi; call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation to ensure that you get home safely.

• If you spot an impaired driver on the road, do not hesitate to call 9-1-1. Officers will do everything they can to locate the motorist and make a determination whether or not they are impaired.

Remember, Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving.

TOLLWAY I-PASS SCAM The Downers Grove Police Department alerts citizens to the latest scam that could jeopardize their computer and personal information. A citizen contacted the Crime Prevention Unit and advised that they received a suspicious e-mail from the Illinois Tollway I-PASS advising that she owed money for unpaid tolls. The e-mail included an attachment that was supposed to explain the charges the victim owed.

The victim did not open the attachment and contacted the tollway. She was advised that the e-mail was a scam and opening the attachment would damage her computer.

The Illinois Tollway is advising I-PASS customers to disregard erroneous emails being sent from "E-Z Pass Collection Agency." I-PASS customers should delete any email titled "In arrears for driving on toll road" or "Payment for driving on toll road" that arrives on E-ZPass letterhead. The Tollway has been informed by the E-Z Pass Group, an association of 25 toll agencies in 15 states that operate electronic toll collection programs, that this is a phishing scam using the E-Z Pass logo and claiming that recipients owe money for missed tolls. No I-PASS accounts have been compromised as a result of this scam.

The Tollway is monitoring the situation closely and will work with the E-Z Pass Group to keep customers informed of any further developments. Customers with further questions can call 1-800-UC-IPASS (I-800-824-7277). adno=S0244710

Patrons often run into Hall of Famer Frank Thomas at his Big Hurt Brewhouse in Berwyn.

Barbecued pulled pork provides a decadent touch to an order of BHB mac and cheese.

Bacon and avocado add big flavor to the salmon BLT sandwich, accom- crispiness. Meanwhile, the pork was very tender. We both panied by sweet potato fries.

To start, my friend ordered the house BHB Honey Girl beer, which is an American Hefeweizen that was tasty and, importantly for a wheat beer, not too sweet. There are several BHB beers, and a fairly wide selection of other craft and domestic brews available

on tap.

For the appetizer, we chose the BHB smothered fries, which feature crispy fries, pulled pork, giardiniera and Monterey Jack cheese. I’m typically quite picky with fries, but these had a coating that captured the desired

agreed the giardiniera could have used more heat, but my friend thought the appetizer was a standout.

Next up, I went with the BHB BBQ pulled pork mac and cheese. Not only is the name a mouthful, but it’s a big portion. Normally, I’m a purist when it comes to mac

and cheese, but the bacon and pulled pork were surprisingly good additions.

First off, the mac and cheese had the proper creaminess, gooeyness and mix of colors to show that there are multiple cheeses at work. Throw in the crispy, crunchy bacon and that would have made for a great meal on its own. The pork was good, again, but the sweet barbecue sauce didn’t quite sync with the savory cheese for my personal taste.

So, I ended up basically eating bacon mac and cheese with a side of pulled pork, and enjoyed both that way.

My friend ordered a salmon BLT sandwich with sweet potato fries and also had positive things to report. The bacon and avocado flavorfully complemented the mild fish to make for another winner.

BERWYN – Heading to a restaurant named after one of my childhood heroes was an exciting prospect, and the food at Big Hurt Brewhouse did not disappoint.

Athletes breaking into the restaurant business is nothing new. In many cases, their involvement varies, determining how large a role they play in the success of the enterprise. A big name on the front of the building is nice, but that alone won’t keep a restaurant afloat.

I am pleased to report Frank Thomas was in the building – and left this White Sox fan a bit stunned at the sight of the Hall of Famer. He runs an attractive restaurant/ sports bar that provided my companion and me with good food and drink. A scattering of Frank Thomas memorabilia brings back some cherished memories, capped by an impressive replica of the statue of the slugger displayed at the ballpark.

The pub is on the southwest corner of Cermak Road and Oak Park Avenue in Berwyn, which means tons of eyeballs get to see the bright white lights that say Big Hurt Brewhouse on a daily basis.

Upon entering, my immediate reaction was: “Ooo, this is kind of fancy.” My casual tastes can just as easily be satisfied in a dive bar or a diner, but it does feel good to walk into a place that puts some effort into the ambience.

The pub is housed in a historic bank building, and still sports a vault, as well as the elaborately embellished dome that draws the eye upward like a baseball headed to the stratosphere. It’s definitely fancy enough for a date night but remains a casual sports bar perfect to watch a game with some friends over drinks.

There are enough TVs that you will never have a bad view if you want to catch a game. And the staff the night I visited was on the ball enough to pipe in the audio right at the Blackhawks game’s first faceoff.

Red Devils edge Trojans in regional finals

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Myles Farley and his Downers Grove North boys basketball teammates were in rarefied air.

With back-to-back wins in regional playoff games, the Trojans made their first regional championship game since 2003. But the memorable playoff run came to an end with a 53-38 loss Friday against Hinsdale Central in the final of the Downers Grove South regional.

It was a successful season for North (17-12) despite the outcome in the final.

“It’s a big step in the right direction for the program,” Farley said of a season that included winning a title at Romeoville’s holiday tournament.

The Trojans jumped out to an early 5-2 lead against Central on buckets by Matt Mahlke and Devin Blake, but they trailed 14-5 after a quarter.

A Blake layup and Farley 3-pointer sandwiched three straight David Edwards buckets for North in the second quarter as it cut the deficit to 18-16.

The Trojans trailed 21-16 at the half, but the Red Devils (22-6) started the second half with a 12-2 run to take control of the game. The closest North got the rest of the way was 3327 on Farley’s deep 3-pointer with less than a minute left in the third.

“They got out in transition,” Farley said of the difference between the first and second halves. “We took some bad shots that led to some long rebounds, and they got some easy buckets out in transition.

“I think they hit only one 3-pointer, it was just offensive rebounding. They hit the glass hard. They’re big, they’re physical.”

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA NORMAL – The finale was fitting for Benet’s girls basketball team.

The Redwings had steamrolled over most of their opponents this season, and did the same in a 61-39 win against Fremd in the Class 4A state championship game Saturday night at Redbird Arena.

Only three of Benet’s 34 wins this season were by single digits, including a 61-54 win against Fremd on Jan. 19.

Six of the team’s seven playoff wins were also by double digits.

The Redwings finished the season with a 34-3 record and the program’s first state title in Joe Kilbride’s first season as head coach.

The championship game was tight for three quarters before Benet blitzed the Vikings in the final frame.

Fremd scored the first two points of the fourth quarter to trim Benet’s lead to 38-35.

Then the Redwings went on a 23-4 run to close out the game, starting with Morgan Thomalla’s layup on an Emily Eshoo assist and concluding with Eshoo’s layup on Thomalla’s feed with 32 seconds left in the game. Katie Jaseckas, Kathleen Doyle and Emily Schramek also scored during the surge that sealed the win.

Doyle’s 18 points led a balanced attack. Schramek scored 15, Jaseckas had 12 and Eshoo added eight for the Redwings.

H-F got as close as 72-69 late in the game before Jaseckas, Stout and Eshoo helped close out the win at the free-throw line.

Eshoo scored 29 in the semifinal with Doyle (17) and Stout (11) also reaching double figures.

Devin Blake scored six of the Trojans’ 11 third-quarter points in the regional semifinal matchup against Willowbrook. The junior guard finished with 14 points and helped DGN advance to the regional final.

It’s been an up and down season for junior Devin Blake, who has a Romeoville Christmas Classic tournament MVP to his name, but was slowed in the second half of the season by a nagging injury. But he came up big when the Trojans needed him the most, scoring 14 points in a game against Willowbrook in the regional semifinals. Blake, the Sears Hardware & Appliance Athlete of the Week spoke with Suburban Life Sports Editor Alex Soulier about the 2013-14 season.

Soulier: You were hampered by an ankle injury [during] the final part of the season. Was it difficult to recover from and play through the injury?

Blake: Yes, I’m back to nor-

mal now, but it took a while.

Suffering the injury, sitting out, missing a few practices, that takes a toll on you and your play. It was tough because mentally you know you should able to drive, plant and pull up, but physically I was limited. It’s nice to finally get back to where I was.

Soulier: Lately, you seem to be finishing around the rim more and not settling for jump shots.

Are you making it a point to get to the hoop?

Blake: My shot has been

inconsistent lately, and in warmups [before the regional semifinal game against Willowbrook], it wasn’t working for me. But I knew I had an advantage if I could drive or get the ball in the paint.
