SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA A Lemont doctor working for Westmont-based IlliniCare Health has been charged with taking a $2,500 kickback in return for his referring Medicaid and Medicare patients to a different company for medical treatment. The U.S. Department of Justice charged Dr. Neil Sharma, 34, of Lemont with illegal remunerations, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a fine up to $25,000 and full restitution, according to a U.S. Attorney Northern District of Illinois news release. According to the website for IlliniCare Health, Sharma joined the company as its chief medical director involved in all major clinical patient care programs in September 2013. IlliniCare receives money from state Medicaid funds based on its enrolled Medicaid patients and pays medical care service companies to serve those

Sharma on Feb. 13 allegedly met with the owner of an undisclosed company that was under contract with IlliniCare and offered to provide 500 patients at an increased rate of $200 per patient in exchange for monthly payments from the owner, according to a Department of Justice complaint. Sharma also planned to move patients from other companies under contract with IlliniCare to the owner’s company and create new programs for that company, according to the complaint. The owner of the company went to federal authorities after the meeting and agreed to record future conversations.
Sharma planned to conceal the payments by being named the medical director for other health care companies owned by the individual he was dealing with, according to the complaint. Sharma received a $2,500 payment Feb. 27 and started sending patients to the other company March 9 as part of a new anti-depressant medication compliance program, according to the complaint. According to his profile on the IlliniCare website, Sharma was previously in a group practice in geriatric medicine in the Joliet area. The profile also explains that he received the Fellow Geriatric Clinician of the Year award at the University of Illinois in Chicago where he completed his fellowship. IlliniCare is owned by the Centene Corporation. “We were made aware of the situation in the past 24 hours,” a Centene spokeswoman said Friday. “IlliniCare is not party to any action.”
CORRECTIONS • A news brief in the March 11 edition of the Westmont Suburban Life misstated the rescheduled date for School District 201’s referendum information meeting at Westmont Junior High School. It was March 16. • A March 11 article misstated when the Benet boys basketball team was defeated in the Class 4A playoffs. Benet was defeated by York in the regional finals. Suburban Life regrets the errors.

Q: What is osteomyelitis? A: Osteomyelitis is the medical term for an infection that spreads from a tooth socket after the extraction of a tooth into the marrow of the bone. A tooth extraction is a serious matter. You can generally expect some bleeding, pain, and swelling after an extraction. A small amount of bleeding and oozing for about 24 hours after the procedure is not unusual. But complications like osteomyelitis can arise. Unlike the condition known as dry socket, osteomyelitis causes a deep pain in the jaw, fever, weakness and general lethargy. If you suspect that you’re infected with osteomyelitis, you’ll need to have a bacteriological culture taken in order to identify the infection and prescribe the most effective antibiotic. In severe cases of osteomyelitis, swelling can extend into the throat and pose a potentially life-threatening situation should the swelling close the trachea. As with any infection, if a case of osteomyelitis is not treated, the infection can travel to the body’s organs with serious potential consequences. In severe instances, a patient may need to be hospitalized so that the antibiotics can be administered intravenously. If you are scheduled for a tooth extraction, be sure to talk with your dentist about the benefits and risks.

WESTMONT – From “A Christmas Carol” to “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” a Westmont organization is celebrating five years of performances by hosting at least one show or event each month this year. The Progressive Village Performance Network’s yearlong celebration will continue in March with “12 Angry Jurors,” which opens Friday at The Commons. “‘12 Angry Jurors’ is extremely intense,” director Sally Cassaro said. “It makes you think about your own prejudices; predetermined or otherwise. It is a glance at our society and how we all have an impact and, most importantly, how we all can affect change and make the world a better place.” Sponsored by the Westmont Park District, The Progressive Village Performance Network’s mission is to artistically enhance Westmont through a variety of participation opportunities, according to www.pvpn4fun.org. The organization consists of amateur performing artists, including dancers, musicians, poets, filmmakers and actors. A cast of 13 will perform “12 Angry Jurors,” which is about a 19-year-old man who has just stood trial for the fatal stabbing of his father. When closing arguments have been presented and a 12-person jury is set to begin deliberations, the case appears closed until one of the jurors begins to present reasonable doubt. Artists to present their work at Gregg House show By AIMEE BARROWS

editorial@mysuburbanlife.com WESTMONT – Dillon Laserna, a 7-year-old Westmont resident, can’t wait to show off his melted-crayon drawings of the Titanic. “I hope I can make people happy,” said the second-grader at Kingsley Elementary School in Downers Grove. “When I first saw the Titanic, I loved it. I hope people like it and think I’m talented.” Dillion will be one of about 30 artists displaying his work at the 10th annual Spring Palette Art Show on Sunday at the Gregg House Museum in Westmont. His mother, Rachel, who is displaying chalk art, said this is the first time her son has exhibited his work. She said he has been drawing since he was 3, and won an art contest at school earlier this year. “We’re extremely proud, just seeing him explore his passion and seeing his creative side. We always want him to follow his dreams and never give up,” she said. Besides Dillon’s melted-crayon pieces, guests will see watercolor and acrylic paintings, caricatures, pottery and photo art, said museum Curator Alice Krampits. The theme of the show

is spring, but she said the artists can display whatever they want because none of the art is judged. Most of the art will be available for purchase. Krampits said she’s always been impressed with the quality that’s displayed at the show each year. “There are excellent artists,” she said. “It’s a great community asset to have so much talent here. Art is so important in any community because it connects people in a different way.” She said the show began 10 years ago with just two artists, then grew to about four artists the following year, and has been getting bigger ever since. She said last year was the largest show to date,

with 30 artists presenting. She hopes attendance and interest continues to grow, not only in the art show, but in the Gregg House Museum as a whole. “This is one of four annual events we put on, and the public can learn about the museum. We want them to visit a place they might not have known about. We’re a hidden gem,” she said. Krampits said the museum added a few things for the anniversary, including a raffle for gift certificates and small framed art, as well as a program for children. At noon, a class on watercolors will be offered specifically for kids to “get them inspired by art.” Laurie Alvear, the host artist for the
event, said a lot of the artists also will demonstrate their work, such as professional cartoonist and Westmont resident Richard Pietrzyk, who will give a presentation. She thinks the show is a good way for the public to interact with local artists like Pietrzyk, and to see what kind of art is being done in the community. “Art is a creative outlet, it’s our reflection of the beauty of the world,” she said. “Every artist has something special. They put their feelings into the work.” Alvear, who displays her nature-inspired pieces every year, said she’s excited about the show because of the diversity at this year’s event. “It will be a nice celebration,” she said. “After two months of seeing nothing but dirty snow it will be a very nice way to start spring and see some color.”

Indian Chinese cuisine goes back over 100 years when people of Chinese origin moved to India across the North East Border and settled in Calcutta. Most of these immigrants were of Hakka ancestry. Tollway may speed up SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The Illinois Tollway is moving closer to increasing the speed limit on several area tollways from 55 to 60 mph, according to an Illinois Tollway news release. The Tollway’s Customer Service and Planning Committee recommended the changes based on years of traffic and engineering studies to determine areas where the speed limit could safely be increased to make traffic more efficient, according to the release. The Tollway’s Board of Directors will consider the recommendation at its March 26 meeting.
The board, the Tollway’s Joint Committee on Administrative Rules and the Illinois Department of Transportation must approve the speed limit changes before they can be enacted. Illinois Senate Bill 2015, which went into effect Jan. 1, allowed tollways in DuPage and Cook counties to be considered for increases up to 70 mph. Tollway stretches that would see increases include: • Interstate 88: from Interstate 290 to Route 31 • Interstate 355: from Interstate 55 to Army Trail Road • Interstate 294: from the Interstate 57 Interchange to the I-55 Interchange

“12 Angry Jurors” is one of more than 20 shows The Progressive Village Performance Network has staged during the past five years. After his childhood, Plowman’s love for theater and acting was put on hold until about 10 years ago, when he joined Downers Grove-based community theater nonprofit Grove Players. He found himself continuously recruiting fellow Westmont residents and felt it would be appropriate to bring a similar organization to his hometown. He and Cassaro, who met Plowman through Grove Players, brought the idea to the Westmont Park District, which agreed to sponsor the organization. What began with a few members performing one-act plays for free at Ty Warner Park has grown into a group of about 10 board members and more than 300 residents taking the stage. “It’s been such a rewarding five years,” Plowman said. “The show in the park was a sheet on a clothesline, and now we are playing in major auditoriums like the high school. It’s quite an accomplishment, so there is really no slowing down.” Plowman said participants may include a 6-year-old who has been acting since age 2 or a 70-year-old who has never been on stage. “When you see that 70-year-old take a bow and get joy of it, that’s it for me,” Plowman said of why he enjoys the organization. “Watching the performances and seeing people just now getting involved when they’ve never done it before.” The organization hosts member meetings the second Tuesday of every month and performs an average of five shows per year, Plowman said. Its willingness to accept residents of all experience levels is a unique characteristic, Cassaro said. “This option is not always available in most community theaters,” she said. “This is what appealed to me and has been rewarding and a success.” Cassaro said residents who would like to participate are not charged. She said the group has double casted and created walk-on parts and additional roles beyond performing, such as handing out programs, to give resi-

To the Editor: How many times do the Westmont School Board 201 members have to bring up a vote for increased taxes to improve our schools? We have already voted on this issue twice and our answer is no! The board thinks cutting way down
from $26 million to $19 million is bare minimum – really? Why don’t they do what we residents do and get financially responsible and reasonable? In this economy, most Westmont residents are struggling financially to live and pay the already high taxes here. Why do you think they voted no twice already? They simply can’t afford it.

Library to add online services this spring The library will upgrade to a new online catalog April 14 that will provide library users with easier access to materials. The catalog connects Westmont cardholders to a network of 77 local libraries offering more than 8 million items. The new and improved catalog will offer exciting new features while continuing to provide the same great services you already COMMUNITY expect. VOICE One update that will Brittany make the catalog easier to use is the ability to find both Hoornaert Smith physical and digital materials during the same online search. Patrons will be able to click and download e-books and e-audiobooks from the results page to a tablet or mobile device without a separate login. The library also will be introducing a service called Pickup Anywhere through the new catalog. When patrons request an item online, the drop-down menu will allow them to choose the most convenient pick-up location from one of the participating area libraries. Another added feature is the option to receive instant text notifications when a requested item has arrived or an item is overdue. Searching for materials will become easier, too. New features such as autocorrect, search suggestions and recommended titles will make finding materials easier for patrons. Search results will resemble Google and other popular search engines. Because of these exciting updates to the new system, the library will not be able to check in any items from April 11 through April 13. This gives patrons a little extra time to enjoy materials with no overdue fines. Items can be checked out during this time, but patrons should remember to bring their library card or card number as library staff won’t have the ability to look it up during these three days. Once the update goes live April 14, current passwords will be automatically reset to the last four digits of the phone number associated with the account. After patrons log in for the first time, they can change their password to any number they choose while checking out the improved library catalog. If patrons want to learn more about using the exciting features of the new catalog, the library is offering staff-led orientation sessions throughout April. Visit the library website to sign up. Drumbeat of bad news vindicates COD faculty When a union can’t see eye to eye with the leadership of the organization that employs its members, there could be any number of factors at play. Sometimes unions have unrealistic expectations. Sometimes there’s just a clash of personalities. Sometimes a leader making needed changes ruffles some feathers along the way. The College of DuPage Faculty Association’s beef with school President Robert Breuder and the Board of Trustees may include some of those elements. But on balance, the faculty members have largely been vindicated. The faculty registered a vote of no confidence in Breuder in September; in the months since then, pretty much everyone else has joined them in that opinion. The recitation of the failures in leadership at the College of DuPage has become routine, yet still shocking. A leaked email suggesting playing games with state money. Fraud at WDCB, the college radio station. Battles over whether imprest payments require auditing. Breuder’s free meals at the money-losing Waterleaf restaurant on campus. And to top it all off, the generous $762,000 in severance that Breuder will get when he vacates his post in disgrace in 2016. David Good, managing editor dgood@shawmedia.com 630-427-6270
Compared to all that, the faculty’s concerns lodged in September can sound almost petty at first: “We don’t feel inspired by [Breuder] as a leader,” said Glenn Hansen, president of the faculty association. There are a lot of people in a lot of jobs feeling less than inspired by their bosses. It’s a common refrain. But in this case, we know now that there was actual bad management behind the complaint. Given what we’ve learned, who could blame Hansen and the faculty members for not feeling inspired? Breuder’s response to the faculty’s vote only cements that they knew what they were talking about. “Factual accuracy has never been important to the Senate leadership,” he wrote in a response made public recently. “It does not support their irresponsible and unfounded accusations.” Strong words, given Breuder’s email that exposed him as someone who finds no issue with bending the truth when it suits him. Next month voters will get to pick three members for the College of DuPage Board of Trustees. There are a lot of candidates running. Residents would be wise to keep in mind the recent leadership dysfunction when making their selections.

It appears that common sense has prevailed in the debate over tree removal or sidewalk installation in Clyde Estates. The Downers Grove Village Council decided no sidewalks and, therefore, no need to destroy mature trees in order to put in the sidewalks. So, now, let’s see if the same common sense can apply to the plan to destroy the historic Edwards House and put up a weird monstrosity full of so-called luxury condos in its place. area’s underage drinking parties? I am wondering who is accountable for underage drinking parties within our community? Discarded beer cans littering the parkways on Saturday mornings. Teens urinating and vomiting on our driveways in the middle of the night. Inebriated adolescents driving home under the influence at 2 a.m. ’Tis the season. End of the year school dances and graduation parties are on the horizon. Again, I am wondering who is accountable for this extremely poor and dangerous behavior? Parents? Teens? Police? School administrators? Local police officers have advised me to call them early and often. I intend to do just that. Additionally, they have reminded my family that, in addition to fists, knives and guns can be part of the equation and are not just “city” issues. Let’s all be accountable, shall we?

Boys flourish in ballet SPONSORED BY
By Gina Kraman Ballet classes are more than sparkly pink tutus and wispy hand movements. They’re physically rigorous, mentally demanding, and appeal to boys, too, including professional football players. NFL Hall of Famer Lynn Swann has been taking ballet classes since college to improve his strength, rhythm, endurance, and mental focus on the playing field. The school of Salt Creek Ballet attracts boys to ballet, including Misha Barkidjija, 12, who has been dancing for more than seven years. He plans to pursue a career in dance, which is no surprise to his father: “Misha has always been active. Ballet is very athletic, with precise and controlled body movements,” says Chris Barkidjija, who drives Misha to his daily practices, about 45 minutes away from home. “When your child loves doing something positive, and is committed to it, it’s hard saying no.” He adds, “Ballet may be less traditional for boys, but it’s even more demanding in some ways than sports.
Misha played soccer for many years, but time commitments forced him to choose either ballet or soccer. While both use similar muscles, ballet trains dancers to open up their bodies, while sports teaches to protect the body. Misha really thrives at Salt Creek Ballet, as the teachers push the students to achieve their goals.” Misha adds, “Ballet lets you express yourself through movement. With stronger legs, boys can do higher jumps than girls, but girls can be more flexible. It’s a great sport for everyone.” Why don’t more boys choose ballet? “The American culture is very sports-focused. In Russia and Cuba, men pursuing ballet is more common,” explains Keith Gerling, who’s 16-year-old son Jack has been dancing for 11 years. He reflects how Jack, as child, would “dance around the house when classical music was playing. I asked if he wanted to try ballet, and he said yes. Ballet has strengthened his discipline, teamwork skills, and stamina. Ballet is a big time commitment, but it’s been very positive, and Salt Creek is the best.”
For more information, call Westmont-based Salt Creek Ballet at (630) 769-1199, or visit www.saltcreekballet.org.
Lisle worker does great job
Thank you to the public works gentleman in the red and black headband who has been cleaning Main Street in downtown Lisle this past winter. Finally, someone who sees all of the trash, not just what will fit on his stick or in his bucket. He works differently than those before him. He approaches his work enthusiastically, and he’s pleasant, too. Yes, we notice. Thank you for a great job.
Better billboard option in Elmhurst I’m just reading the article on Sound Off to electronic billboards on [the] Palmer Drive underpass. Yes, I also would be against that billboard. But I would encourage the city to have a community bulletin board type of thing that would be in the train station on York Road, and possibly some of our volunteer groups could pay for this billboard. Or I wouldn’t call it a billboard. I would call it a community advertisement for functions in the town that are going on. … That I would like to see in Elmhurst, and I would put that at the train station.

St. Mary of Gostyn Hosts Rainbows Program for Grieving Children SPONSORED BY By Denise Freese When children experience loss, whether through the death of a parent or another family member, a divorce, military deployment, or even a friend moving far away, they need assistance in learning how to grieve. According to www.kidshealth.org. nz, kids need continuity (normal activities), care, and connection. Another tool that can help children cope with loss is a peer support group, such as the Rainbows Program. Rainbows is a national program that offers children an outlet to verbalize their feelings and meet other children who are dealing with similar situations. It offers participants a loving, accepting environment where they can share their stories. The goal is healthy resolution and healing of the loss experience, according to http:// rainbows.org/. The importance of this program can’t be overstated. According to the Rainbows website, children who suffer a major loss in their life are at increased risk for learning, emotional, and behavioral issues.
They can suffer from physical health problems, aggression, substance abuse, and alcohol abuse. The Rainbows Program, which is run by trained volunteers, offers many benefits: children develop appropriate behavior and anger management skills; they improve their academic performance; depression, anxiety, and emotional pain are reduced; and family communication improves. “When kids see other kids going through the same things they are, it’s invaluable to them,” said Jerry Chenski, Director of Religious Education at SMG. St. Mary of Gostyn offers this wonderful peer support group for children who are dealing with a profound loss. It is the only program of its kind in the Downers Grove area, and is the only one offered in the evenings. This free program is open to any child in the community. It is for kids in grades 1-6; they meet Tuesdays at 6 pm at the Parish Center
For more information about the Rainbows Program, please contact: Jerry Chenski, Director of Religious Education St. Mary of Gostyn, 445 Prairie Avenue (630) 960-3565, x219 religiouseducation@stmarygostyn.org www.StMaryGostyn.org

Common sense in Downers Grove
How to Sound Off
SD • Wednesday, March 18, 2015 • mysuburbanlife.com • Suburban Life
I feel the Village Council is wasting way too much money on the gateway signs. Come on, $100,000 for four signs and more waste coming next year. The design is supposed to have such a deep meaning that a sign will be needed next to them to explain they represent the train station’s red brick and Sears home. It’s a joke. But I’m crying, not laughing.

HINSDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT 86 What are the most pressing issues facing your school district? Hinsdale District 86 has a history of excellence in preparing students for post-secondary education and fulfilling employment opportunities. It is imperative we maintain that tradition through effective and efficient board governance. District 86 needs a well-functioning board that agrees compromise and consensus are critical to school success. For the District 86 Board to govern effectively, it must restore a positive climate that fosters trust, respect and collaboration between all stakeholders: The board, its administration, its educators and staff, and the community. The Board must use Kathleen the taxpayers’ monies wisely, making sure all stakeholders are properly resourced. Hirsman How do you balance the educational needs of students with the economic challenges facing taxpayers? You sit down with other board members, administrators and community members, and you solve those economic challenges collaboratively. What are the most pressing issues facing your school district? The two most pressing issues facing District 86 is financial and the collective bargaining agreement. First, District 86 is facing serious financial constraints and we must be able to live within our means. To achieve this, financial assumptions must be realistic, truthful and reflect district historical trends, as well as the advice and data our experts provide. This information should be used to set the budget and then take the advice of the district’s CFO to levy what is appropriate to ensure the Jennifer excellence of education in this district. Collective bargaining conversations must start immediately and they must be collaborative. Planson How do you balance the educational needs of students with the economic challenges facing taxpayers? We must eliminate wasteful spending on law firms, consultants and outsourcing services and utilize and train staff to accomplish the same objectives. This district must allow the superintendent to lead his staff to create procedures, invest time and energy into training staff more effectively and educating staff on how to implement policies and procedures. This will allow finances to be directed toward educational opportunities for students and allow the balancing of the budget. Listening to the advice of the expertise the district has hired, allowing them to do their job efficiently and not micromanage will empower this district to use taxpayer funds wisely.
What are the most pressing issues facing your school district? Budget deficit due to school funding and expenditures. We need to be fiscally responsible and live within our budget. How do you balance the educational needs of students with the economic challenges facing taxpayers? Through good, open and honest communication between all parties involved. We need to offer the best for our students while living within our financial means, while eliminating wasteful spending and using the revenue we have to go toward educating the student first.
Bill Carpenter
What are the most pressing issues facing your school district? The board needs to cure a false sense of crisis certain special interests have created because they feel threatened. To cure this problem, the board needs to be more aggressive in opening lines of communication with the public. The last two years, the board has balanced the budget (even shown surpluses), but when the largest class of expenditures expands at a greater rate than revenues, stability is endangered. Illinois statute requires restructuring the methodology of certified staff (teachGregory er) evaluations. Preparation for that process has revealed the district’s current evaluation practice is ineffective (with well over 90 percent of its staff being rated Gershuny “Excellent”). How do you balance the educational needs of students with the economic challenges facing taxpayers? Simply asking the question takes us most of the way toward the result because it recognizes there is a need for a balance. You cannot set out to deliver a world-class education without regard to resources. In that regard, education is like anything else. There are three basic necessities for delivery of educational services: A place to hold class, a curriculum to deliver and teachers to instruct. Provision of each has associated economic costs and the balance of these requires sound economic planning and a competent board to bring all the parts together.

What are the most pressing issues facing the school district? Figuring out how to work in partnership with our teaching staff to implement the many changes in education today regarding evaluations, testing and curriculum. In my opinion, I’ve recently seen a swing away from collaborating with our staff by our administration and board, and I don’t believe that is in the best interests of our children. Teachers and administrators need to be partners in the education of our children. Dealing with potential financial pressures with the possibility of pension expenses being pushed back on the school districts or a reduction in state aid are also concerns, Timothy and the current board has a lack of financial expertise to deal with these issues. Casey What specific experience makes you a good fit for the school board? I have Westmont already served on this board for eight years, from 2005 to 2013. I decided to take some time away and chose not to run for re-election in 2013. However, I still have a first-grader in the district along with four older children that have gone through the district and continue to have a vested interest in the education of all of our children within the financial parameters provided by the taxpayers. … With my past experience on the board, my experience managing office buildings and developing and meeting budgets (15 years) … I think my skill set is a perfect fit for this responsibility. What are the most pressing issues facing the school district? The most pressing issue facing our school district is finances. Our board has been fiscally responsible while maintaining small class sizes, which I am very proud of. I think it is vital, especially given the changing demographics in our district. We have a great school district that offers so much, which I hope we can continue in the future. With the state of Illinois cutting back, we need to keep a tight rein on finances while providing for the children of this district and giving them the best education experience possible. What specific experience makes you a good fit for the school board? I have been Amy Sullivan a resident for 20 years and have had three children go through District 60. As a board Clarendon Hills member since 2007, I have the experience of working through financial challenges, working with the superintendent and always having the best interest of the children and taxpayers when making decisions. I have a Bachelor of Science from St. Mary’s University and have worked at the village of Burr Ridge in the finance department since 2006. I have been on many committees and chaired some for the PTO/PTA over the years and have volunteered in the classroom and as a room parent.

MAERCKER SCHOOL DISTRICT 60 BOARD
What are the most pressing issues facing your school district? The most pressing issue facing District 86 is financial sustainability. Our revenues are limited by the Consumer Price Index. For this year, CPI was 1.7 percent and next year it will be Richard Skoda 0.8 percent. Yet, the teaching staff for decades has received increases well in excess of CPI. In the last contract, the average pay raise was 3.995 [percent], while CPI new revenue was 1.7 percent. The teachers’ union does itself a disservice when it supports board candidates with money, endorsements and volunteers as the members it elects have become compromised. How do you balance the educational needs of students with the economic challenges facing taxpayers? District 86 has a surplus approaching $30 million. Due to the inability of past boards and this board to hold the line on excessive wage demands from unions, our surplus will be shrinking. The behavior of past boards and this board will lead to unsustainability long term. Our teachers in 2013-14 averaged $111,000 in total compensation and rank among the highest paid teachers in the nation. Over the last decade, wages are consuming a larger part of the total expenditures of the districts. Hence, we are having to cannibalize maintenance and facility upgrades to accommodate for the larger share teachers’ salaries are consuming.

MAERCKER SCHOOL DISTRICT 60 BOARD – CONTINUES FROM PAGE 13
SCHOOL DISTRICT 99 BOARD OF EDUCATION
What are the most pressing issues facing the school district? I believe there are three pressing areas of concern for the district: First, declining level of parent engagement in the success of our schools. … Unless there is active parent participation the community will not push the teachers and the administration to higher standards and drive excellence. Second, there appears to be [a] growing gap in student performance between students who have English as their primary language and students who have English as their second language. The district needs to do more to bring up the Pradeep performance of students with ESL. Third, … the district is consistently burdened with unfunded mandates from the state and ISBE creating financial strain in the district. Tekkey What specific experience makes you a good fit for the school board? I have Westmont over 25 years of experience in the business world covering finance, contract negotiations, vendor management, staff and problem management, technology, employee relations, budgeting, forecasting and executive management. I have been a member of the Maercker District Leadership Team for over three years, monitoring progress of the school against its strategic plan. I participate in the district Facilities Committee reviewing plans for introducing pre-school and full-day kindergarten. As an active PTA member, I volunteer for activities like the science fair and fun fair at the school. I also volunteer as the Cub scoutmaster and den leader for the scouts in the district.
What are the most pressing issues facing the school board? 1. Reduced state and federal funding. I oppose increasing taxes to bridge gaps. 2. Our superintendent is retiring. My four years of learning about a superintendent’s role and responsibilities will help me as we seek the best fit for our community. 3. A new teacher contract. As we did in my previous term, I hope we can agree to another fair contract for our teachers and community. Reducing student fees, improving food services, adoption of a Master Facilities Plan and considering moving semesMike ter finals to December are additional issues for the board to address. What specific experience makes you a good fit for the school board? I’m the Davenport father of four children, two currently attending DGS. I use my parental experience Downers and my taxpayer perspective when considering issues such as school funding, Grove curriculum development, how and why we close school for snow days, why buses show up late and how school lunch contracts are awarded. If the voters elect me to continue my volunteer service (we receive no compensation), I will apply lessons learned with even greater effect. As a licensed architect, I also bring unique perspectives, talents and leadership to the board.

What are the most pressing issues facing the school board? The Great Unknown is the most pressing issue facing any school board in Illinois. We don’t yet know what changes will be made in Springfield that directly impact our funding. Will our funding be cut? Will our budget have to absorb pensions? Will educational or performance standards change? We also don’t know what kind of changes we will experience in the student body. Will the number of students who receive subsidized services continue to increase? Will we have to add more services to Nancy Kupka accommodate more students who don’t speak English or for whom English is a second language? Woodridge What specific experience makes you a good fit for the school board? There is a steep learning curve associated with being a school board member. If re-elected, this will be my second term on the school board. My education and work history have afforded me the experience to understand the altruism and service of education as well as administrative responsibilities and the stewardship of public funds. I have served effectively over the last four years, representing the best interest of the school and the taxpayer. I am committed to preserving the integrity of public education.

SCHOOL DISTRICT 99 BOARD OF EDUCATION – CONTINUES FROM PAGE 14
Responses have been edited for space. Visit mysuburbanlife.com/election-central for complete profiles.
What are the most pressing issues facing the school board? I believe the three most pressing issues include: A) Hiring a new superintendent to succeed Dr. Mark McDonald, who retires next year. B) Protecting District 99 finances against proposed state funding formula threats that total in the millions of dollars per year specifically and cuts in state education spending and reimbursements generally. C) Ensuring that our nationally recognized curriculum maintains its high-quality status, strives for continued improvement and growth and affords Keith every student the opportunity to succeed within it as a college- or career-ready graduate. Matune What specific experience makes you a good fit for the school board? I am a Downers 16-year Illinois licensed teacher and administrator, who has been named Illinois Grove Teacher of the Year and IHSA Gymnastics Coach of the Year. I am deeply invested in District 99 as a former North High graduate who grew up in Woodridge and lives in Downers Grove. Further, I am a fourth-year District 99 Board member who has kept important campaign promises, such as televising board meetings, increasing fiscal accountability and transparency, and improving much needed relations with parents and the community through extensive communication efforts.
What are the most pressing issues facing the school board? Over the next four years, the Board of Education will be charged with several critical decisions, but two appear to be paramount. First, the board will be charged with hiring a new superintendent upon Dr. McDonald’s upcoming retirement. Getting this decision right will be critical for the future success of District 99. Second, the board will negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement with the teacher’s association. The board should be focused on retaining and attracting top talent while being Donald E. mindful of District 99’s financial needs. What specific experience makes you a good fit for the school board? Over the Renner past few years, I have served on the District 99 Education Foundation assisting Downers with fundraising efforts for District 99. During said time I have come to know Dr. Grove McDonald, administrators and teachers. What I have learned is that District 99 is an asset our community should preserve and treasure. In addition, as an attorney for the past 12 years, I have advised school districts with regard to their budgets and levies and have defended school districts in property tax litigation. I think I am uniquely qualified and will offer a perspective the Board does not currently have.

In what turned out to be his final high school basketball game, Farley led Downers Grove North in scoring as the Trojans played in their first regional championship game in 12 years. North lost against Hinsdale Central in the regional final but it was still a solid season and Farley, the Sears Hardware & Appliance Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life Sports Editor Jason Rossi about the campaign in which the Trojans finished with a 17-12 record before he turned his attention to baseball season.
Rossi: What are your thoughts on the game against Hinsdale Central? Farley: I thought we really pushed out on the perimeter. I think they hit only one
3-pointer, it was just offensive rebounding. They hit the glass hard. They’re big, they’re physical. As far as pace goes, we know they like to run a little bit, so you counter that by trying to slow the game down.
Rossi: What is the legacy this senior class leaves behind for the teams to follow? Farley: I don’t know if it’s so much the record as it is the work ethic and chemistry. I love every guy in there [the locker room] and I wouldn’t want to do it with any other group. I think that’s what we leave for other groups.
Rossi: How do you put this season into perspective? Farley: It’s a big step in the right direction for the program.
