2 get jail time in stabbings Jury determines Westmont man gets 35 years for father’s murder SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA WESTMONT – A Westmont man convicted of killing his father in May 2011 was sentenced to 35 years in prison, the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office announced Monday in a news release.

William V. Clifford III, 35, formerly of the 800 block of North Pasquinelli Drive, was found guilty by a jury of first-degree murder William in January.

Police responded Clifford May 28 to Clifford’s home in the Homestead Village hotel after receiving a report of a fight in progress, according to the release.

Upon arriving, they found Clifford’s father, 64-year-old William Clifford Jr., bleeding from multiple stab

The elder Clifford went to his son’s residence to visit and at some point during the day, the younger Clifford stabbed his father repeatedly in the back and upper body, the release stated. The younger Clifford fled the scene but was later arrested without incident.

He will be required to serve his entire sentence and will receive credit for the 1,396 days he has spent in jail since being taken into custody.

Fight leads to wife getting 14 years for killing man SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA WESTMONT – A Westmont woman pleaded guilty March 18 in the 2013 stabbing death of her husband, according to a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Lisa Davis, 44, of the 500 block of West 61st Street, has been sentenced to 14 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for one count of second-degree murder, the Lisa Davis release stated.

About 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15, Westmont police responded to a 911 call at the Davis residence, according to the release, where they found Lisa Davis’ husband,

WESTMONT – With early voting underway and the April election in less than two weeks, proponents of Community Unit School District 201’s upcoming referendum – its third in just more than a year – are busy spreading information and lobbying to pass the measure.

“What we want to do is educate the voters,” said Courteney Templeton, a local parent involved with the district’s facilities committee, which has been distributing placards, encouraging “Vote Yes” yard signs, placing door hangers and mailing letters, all in support of the referendum.

At $19.7 million, the district’s most recent request to issue large-scale, long-terms bonds is substantially less than its predecessors. A $26.4 million referendum was rejected by voters 56 to 44 percent in November, and in March 2014, a $24.4 million referendum was shot down 78 to 22 percent.

“Many times referendums don’t pass the first time,” Board of Education President Marie Charlton said.

If the referendum is approved, the district would issue the bonds later this year and pay them back over 19 years, according to district Business Manager Kimberly Anderson, owing about $1.4 million annually, with the option to extend payments an additional year.

In order to issue those bonds, property taxes to district residents would increase, Anderson said. For example, the owner of a $250,000 home would pay an additional $266 per year.

Q: How can I minimize the wear on my teeth’s enamel?

A: Although the teeth’s enamel is the hardest element in your body, it is susceptible to wear and tear just like any other part of the body.

Some foods and liquids that pass through our mouths are more corrosive to enamel than are others. For instance, though fruit and fruit juice are good for us, those that contain citric acid, like oranges, lemons, and bananas, are potentially damaging to enamel. You should also consume carbonated drinks in moderation. You even need to be careful about the toothpaste you use. Avoid toothpastes with abrasives in them, even though they may be marketed as tooth-whitening, stainremoving marvels.

Some other things to consider: chewable tablets, like those for vitamin C, aspirin, or iron, can be corrosive, as can be repeated vomiting from alcoholism or bulimia. Refluxed gastric acid from a hiatus hernia or some other medical condition is also damaging to teeth. So, if you are concerned about enamel erosion, you should minimize contact with teeth when drinking acidic juices. Drinking through a straw will help.

And with medicines or supplements that can be corrosive, take them in a solid form that you can swallow immediately. Talk with your dentist about other ways to protect the enamel on your teeth.

Stormwater referendum forum to be conducted Thursday

WESTMONT – Westmont will host an informational forum to discuss its upcoming stormwater referendum, the village announced in a news release.

The forum begins at 6:30 p.m. at the village hall, 31 W. Quincy St. The village is seeking a 0.5 percent sales-tax increase to fund stormwater management and infrastructure improvements, which are estimated to cost $30 million. The proposed tax hike could bring in $800,000 to $1 million of additional revenue annually.

The high school uses mobile dividers to serve as walls and create doors, and its entrance is not sectioned off from the rest of the school. Manning’s entrance faces an alley but would be repositioned to look onto Linden Avenue were the referendum to pass. Neither Manning nor Miller have elevators, the installation of which also are part of the referendum plans.

The work would be done during the summers of 2015 and 2016.

During a March 11 community meeting and building tour at the high school – one of several hosted by the district – residents expressed concern about the district’s approach to funding and executing the improvements.

“Why try to do all these projects in one bite?” district parent Tim Hoerman said.

Charlton said the district’s comprehensive approach is the result of a desire to treat each school’s needs as equally important.

“The fact of the matter is, this is coming on to a small group of property owners who have to absorb the cost of it,” resident and former district parent Joe Hrncirik said.

But Charlton said in a previous interview it’s better financially for the district to borrow at the current interest rate.

“It’s only going to get more expensive,” she said at the meeting. “Safety’s never going to go away.”

At present, visitors to all district facilities must buzzed in, doors are always locked and front entranceways are monitored via camera. Regardless of whether the referendum passes, the district plans to use existing funds to put manual turn locks on doors in its schools.

Westlund is calling the event her “Recycled Life.”

“It’s the ultimate gift that someone gave me,” she said.

Her health problems started in 2002 when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma.

The radiation treatments she went through scarred her heart valve, and

she faced end stage heart failure a decade later.

She went through blood transfusions and multiple surgeries, during which her heart stopped and had to be restarted on multiple occasions.

She said the first time she was told after a surgery that she had been resuscitated, she was horrified. Eventually, she became desensitized to it.

Westlund plans to organize future Recycled Life events in Oak Lawn and Naperville.

Recycled Life also will have teams participating in the Walk the Walk for Autism in April and a Relay for Life event in May. Westlund said she would like to make Recycled Life a nonprofit organization so she can continue to host events such as the one this weekend.

“There’s a lot of good we can do in this world,” she said. “We need to do that one thing one day at a time.”

WESTMONT – Gwendolyn Westlund is not afraid to talk in detail about her experiences with her heart transplant.

Being brought back from death multiple times has helped her gain that courage.

“It makes you want to live your moment better and get other people involved in helping other people,” she said.

The 33-year-old Willowbrook resident will try to bring more awareness to organ donation during a blood drive and educational event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Saturday at Westmont High School, 909 Oakwood Drive.

LifeSource will run the drive, while representatives from Be The Match will teach about bone marrow donation and testing. Medical professionals will be on hand to talk about organ donation.

The school’s Students Against Destructive Decisions group will act as guides for the event. Westlund said donating blood is an easy way to help others.

“Isn’t that nice that you can take a nap and save a life at the same time?” she said. “I think it’s freaking awesome.”

To the editor: The voters in CUSD 201 should take a moment to consider the April [7] referendum. There are some who would reduce it to numbers. Yes, the district needs $19.7 million. Yes, if approved, it would mean that homeowners’ taxes would rise. But broken down, it’s really less than $1 per day. And what about the cost if we don’t pass this referendum? That’s the bottom line that should influence each voter’s decision.

The $19.7 million has been carefully researched. This bond money would fund the projects that have been identified as a priority for our district and will improve the safety and security of our schools, the ADA accessibility, and the educational environment.

Yes, the focus is on safety, security and accessibility. Three of our schools allow visitors to enter with free access. Echoes of Columbine and Sandy Hook ring out. We have open stairwells that cannot contain the flames and smoke of a fire. We have students who use wheelchairs forced to spend valuable time using a lift. We have open classrooms where students can, theoretically, be instructed simultaneously in AP calculus and Spanish. Can you listen to and learn those at the same time? I can’t.

The upgrades must happen; the needs will not go away. Please don’t force the district to ask again. Please allow this to proceed now.

As a parent and homeowner, voting “yes” for this referendum is my responsibility for my children and the children of the rest of the current and future families of the district. Please make yours an educated vote as well.

To the editor: CUSD 201 is, for the third time in the past year, asking its constituents for approval for a referendum to fund school building improvements. To their credit, the board has scaled the size of the request down from $26 million to just under $20 million. The annual impact on a home in Westmont goes from $300 a year to around $240 a year as a result.

However, in the discussion during the Jan. 13 board meeting at which the board approved the question, board member Price referred several times to not wanting the board to “tie their hands” with respect to using internal resources to fund more of these

Your vote has never been easier or more powerful If you’re one of those people who gets annoyed every election cycle at the admonishments to go out and vote because you don’t care, you’re never going to vote and you don’t see why everyone keeps harping on it, then fear not – this message is not for you.

This message is for the people who vote sometimes, or the people who know they should vote but can’t seem to get around to it. This is for the people who are most likely to vote when there’s a presidential or gubernatorial race at the top of the ticket.

This is for the people who’d vote if it was an app on their smartphones, but don’t want to go to the trouble of seeking out a polling place.

If you fit into any of those categories, then you need to vote between now and April 7, because this is the election where your vote matters most. (Early voting concludes April 4, and the 7th is Election Day, so don’t try to vote on the 5th or 6th).

Municipal elections combine small constituencies with extremely low turnout, meaning that races for positions that control tens of millions or even hundreds of millions of tax dollars often turn on a few hundred votes … or a few dozen votes … sometimes even one vote.

Sometimes, even, a coin flip. For instance, in 2013, a Stickney Village Board trustee was chosen by a coin flip because the candidates tied with 573 votes apiece.

In the 2012 presidential election, on the other hand, more than 129 million votes

were cast. So you can see where being one vote out of 1,146 can have a much bigger impact.

If you’re not happy with your local schools, or local services, or the park district, or the library in your town, check and see if there’s anyone up for election on one of those boards.

This is your chance to weigh in on two key referendums for Westmont – one to determine whether to increase the village’s sales tax a half percent to fund stormwater management and infrastructure improvements, and another to potentially allow Community Unit School District 201 to issue $19.7 million in bonds to improve safety and access in its facilities.

If the importance of your vote isn’t enough to convince you, consider that it’s easier than ever to vote. Sure, a smartphone app would be great (if potentially insecure), but thanks to early voting you don’t necessarily need to stand in long lines. Pick an off-peak day and time during the early voting period, and you might be able to walk in and cast your ballot without any wait at all. Then you can sit back and watch everyone else hyperventilate knowing you’ve already done your civic duty.

Voters looking to avoid long lines during the April 7 consolidated election can now find their local polling site and cast their ballots early.

Through April 4, certain polling places across Illinois, including in Cook and DuPage counties, are open for early voting for municipal, park, library, school and fire district officials.

In the last 2013 consolidated election, more than 40,000 in Cook and 10,000 in DuPage took advantage of the early option.

When early voting was originally passed in Illinois in 2005, the hope was to increase voter turnout, said Robert Saar, DuPage County Election Commission executive director.

In that regard, it has been fairly unsuccessful in both presidential and nonpresidential elections. Turnout in consolidated elections in both counties has dropped since 2005, with only

Cook County Clerk David Orr said he believes it’s still too soon to tell how successful early voting has been, but believes it is valuable.

And though it has not brought the higher turnouts hoped for when the state adopted the practice in 2005, it still remains valuable, Saar said. “What it does is take the pressure off the polling places on Election Day,” he said.

That means fewer locations need to be open on Election Day, and fewer election judges and fewer resources are needed throughout the season. Saar said DuPage has reduced its Election Day polling locations by almost two-thirds

COLLEGE OF DUPAGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES What are the most pressing issues facing the college? By far, the most important issue facing COD is re-establishing a proper relationship between the board and the president. With Dr. Breuder’s promised retirement, we need to find a new president who will improve education at COD, collaborate with the employees and efficiently use the taxpayers’ investment in this great local resource. COD needs a leader who will only spend money on things that improve education and service to students and the transparency necessary to hold that leader accountable.

Dan Bailey What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? My long association with the college began as a student starting in 1975. For 39 years, COD has been a Wheaton source for personal enrichment, learning Spanish and changing careers to become a registered nurse. My daughters also attended COD. I know very well how important this resource is for the people of our communities. It is worth fighting for. My commitment is to be a watchdog for transparency and taxpayers at every board meeting and to be a bulldog for students and their teachers. My experience in the health science area and in labor management committees will serve that commitment.

What are the most pressing issues facing the college? There are major issues with internal controls and financial reporting and spending by the executive staff of the school. There is a severe lack of oversight by both the Board of Trustees and those charged with governance. There has been blatant misuse of no-bid contracts, and that needs to stop. The president has a reputation for brewing mistrust among people for his own personal gain. Because of his $762,000 contract buyout and the extraordinary wining and dining at the Waterleaf, the school now risks losing some of the state funding it receives each year. This can only hurt the Claire Ball students and community.

Addison What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? I work for a publicly traded company, and I must explain everything in detail and be able to justify every change made each day, review every document and check every figure for accuracy in staying compliant with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. I worked with people to prepare departmental budgets, ensuring their needs were met while staying within company thresholds, so I work very well working with people.

I also worked with capital expenditure bidding approval and understand lease language. I am also known for being a person of integrity and truly working with people for the betterment of the project, group or company.

What are the most pressing issues facing the college? The college is in real trouble. There is: Lack of faculty and public confidence in the president’s leadership; financial scandals including alleged fraud, highly questionable spending practices, lack of openness at board meetings; and, in general, a president who has consistently been unable to work with others.

What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? I worked in information systems. I have a master’s degree in business from the University Charles of Illinois. While there, I passed the CPA exam. I spent my career working with companies in a wide variety of industries. My company, a leading firm in the IBM Bernstein midrange marketplace, developed software and provided consulting services to Wheaton help our customers access and analyze their computer data. We enabled them to make better management decisions. We need people on the board who understand how we can address the serious accounting and financial issues the college faces.

What are the most pressing issues facing the college? 1. Improving accessibility of our finances ... The policy should change so that the board, public and taxpayers can access and review for themselves where the college is spending its money.

2. Finding the right leader ... It is important as a board to develop consensus on how we will select and find our new college president ... 3. Restoring credibility ...

COLLEGE OF DUPAGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES What are the most pressing issues facing the college? The College of DuPage has a Board of Trustees that is not holding the president and administration responsible. The board seems to have forgotten that the president reports to them and they report to the taxpayers. The lack of oversight and accountability has allowed insider deals, no-bid contracts, waste and fraud to take place for far too long. The mission of the college is to provide accessible, affordable and comprehensive education. We need to get back to the basics to ensure we deliver on that promise.

Frank What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? I have served as a village trustee in Bartlett and as a school board member on U-46. I always Napolitano asked the tough questions to ensure that any money being spent was a good use Bloomingdale of the taxpayer dollars. I fought no-bid contracts, spoke out against any wasteful spending and worked to increase transparency. During my term on the Bartlett Village Board, we reduced the budget by 6.4 percent while delivering the level of service our residents expected. Bartlett received many awards and recognitions during my time on the board.

The board has fundamentally failed to exercise real oversight over the college president, and that dereliction has had a ripple effect throughout the institution. This election is crucial to remove the current incumbents and install trustees willing to reform how COD currently does things, particularly with respect to Dr. [Robert] Breuder; to select the new college president; repair the rift with the faculty that led to the September 2014 no confidence vote; respect the faculty as professionals; solve the problems with Deanne internal controls and board policies that generated financial irregularities and an employee indicted for theft into six figures; and to restore trust with the public.

Mazzochi What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? As a small-business Elmhurst owner and attorney, I have experience regarding employment issues; I have drafted, negotiated and litigated contracts and have issued FOIA requests and addressed Open Meetings Act issues – all areas where the current board has fallen short. ... In over 17 years of private practice, I have investigated many large corporate/bureaucratic organizations to figure out the facts on the ground, apply the law and engage in creative problem-solving on behalf of my clients. The public needs assurance that there is more than just one trustee looking out for us on the board; ideally they would have a majority so engaged.

During my term as trustee, I have honed my leadership skills by attending trustee education seminars presented several times a year by the Illinois Community College Trustee AssociNancy ation. These seminars have dealt with finance, legal issues, government relations, curriculum and leadership skills. I also have three degrees in education and over Svoboda 30 years of community college experience serving as a COD faculty member and Downers leader. Currently I serve as a dissertation adviser in the Higher Education and Orga- Grove nizational Change program at Benedictine University. My educational background and involvement with ICCTA provide a critical perspective for leading COD and hiring a new president.

What are the most pressing issues facing the college? Transparency, budget and expense controls. Priority will also be to hire an honorable and well qualified president. With all things being equal I would like to hire a female president, the first in COD’s 47 year history. I think this will be a positive change and will help COD move forward into the future.

What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? I am an experienced board member, with almost 12 years as DuPage County Regional School trustee. I have a diverse background from public service to business ownership and experience as an accountant for several Fortune 500 companies, all which will help me to be a asset to the COD Board.

These experiences allowed me to hone my leadership skills, learn about good governance, due diligence, collaboration, negotiations and networking to obtain positive results.

What are the most pressing issues facing the college? The current politicization of the college poses a serious threat to the continued progress and development of the college. It may interfere with our ability to attract the best candidates to lead the institution. COD is one of the pre-eminent community colleges in the country and it requires a president who can nurture the dynamic educational environment and work with the community. Fiscal concerns, transparency issues and quality academic programs must always be priorities. Strategically planning for ever-changing trends in educational and Kim Savage workforce needs will help to maintain a stable, and hopefully growing, enrollment.

What specific experiences make you a good fit for the board? I have a master’s degree Darien in education, majoring in college student services administration and a minor in business.

I have more than three decades of employment in higher education with experience in policy development, budget analysis, strategic planning and project planning. I have worked with commuter student issues, developing programs for engagement to help them reach their academic goals. I serve on the Illinois Student Assistance Commission where we make it possible for students to obtain financial resources to attend college. I apply the unique insight and understanding of this lifetime of learning to my work with the board.

Always deflecting praise, she rejoiced in the accomplishments of her husband and family - taking avid interest in every detail - and those of the many thousands of children, parents, teachers, and staff whose lives she deeply affected as a pioneering school psychologist and psychotherapist for over 50 years.

All who knew her will remember her for her irreplaceable élan, penetrating intelligence, and indefatigable interest in everyone and everything around her. Utterly practical, intensely idealistic, furiously honest, wise and funny, generous and kind, devoted to living life with purpose and optimism to the very last. Solveig Elise Sedlet, 90, of La Crosse passed away Thursday, March 19, 2015, at The Willows Assisted Living, La Crosse Wisconsin.

Three weeks earlier, twenty-nine children, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and significant others traveled from all over the country to celebrate her birthday.

Solveig was born to innkeepers Hans and Martha (Ahrenkiel) Petersen in the village of Fjelstrup, Denmark on February 25, 1925. Her family life was marked by love and hard work in the era before automobiles, telephones, and televisions. As children, she, her sister Gerda, and brother Willy observed or participated in the many dances and other events that took place at the inn.

Nazi forces occupied Denmark when Solveig was 15. With it began years of air raids, curfews, scarcity of food and fuel, disappearances, and a spare bedroom occupied by enemy soldiers. She and friends found moments of joy and escape attending dances that ended before curfew, and as part of a rowing team that competed in the Baltic Sea. At age 18 she moved to Copenhagen to become a children's nurse in an orphanage for newborns.

After the war, she set out to circle the world. She began by taking a job as a nanny for a family with four boys in worn-torn London, teaching herself to read English with newspapers and a dictionary.

In 1945, at the age 24, with Gerda, she sailed to America and found work as a dental assistant in New Jersey. She met and married Raymond Hirsch in December 1950.

They moved to St. Louis, Missouri and then Downers Grove, Illinois, giving birth to Karen, Ellen, Nina and John along the way. In December 1963, Ray died at age 45 and Solveig became a widow with children age 6 months to 10 years.

In 1969, she met and married Jacob Sedlet, a widower and father of two children, Susan and Steven.

So began the era of six kids, two dogs, and long family vacations sitting shoulder to shoulder in a big brown station wagon.

Life moved on with both joys and sorrows, and eventually Jakes' death in March 2003 at age 81.

Solveig is survived by daughters, Karen (Jim) Ringstrom, Ellen (Chis) La Shorne, Nina Hirsch, and son John Hirsch all of La Crosse WI; stepdaughter, Susan Burgess (Tony Johnson) of Baltimore MD; stepson, Steve (Kathy) Sedlet of Plano, TX; grandchildren, Hayden (Guy) Rutter of Palatine IL, Emily (Jason) Walz of Minneapolis MN, Daniel La Shorne of Palatine IL, Eva Ringstrom (Travis Kriplean) of Portland OR, Mark (Liz) Ringstrom of Lexington KY, Tom Ringstrom of Minneapolis MN, Nick Sedlet of New York City NY, Jocelyn Sedlet of New York City, NY, and Hannah (Kyle) Sherseth of Atalanta GA; and four great grandchildren, Avery and Finley Rutter and Desmond and Emmett Walz.

In addition to Ray and Jake, she was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Willy Petersen; and her sister, Gerda Marcello.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2015, at First Congregational Church, 2503 Main Street, La Crosse. The Reverend Bill Hoglund will officiate.

Family and friends may call at the church from 3:00 p.m. until time of service.

FRANK E. WELSH, JR. Frank Ellsworth Welsh Jr., age 93, died Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at the Seasons Hospice in Naperville, following a brief illness.

He leaves his son, Michael S. Welsh; his daughter, Linda K. Welsh and daughter-in-law, Dorry Norris; two grandchildren, Jerome and Stephan Welsh; two great grandchildren, Jonas and Ruby Welsh; and many friends.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 67 years, Marlys Maxine Welsh (nee Unger).

Born and raised in Wichita Kansas, the son of Frank E. Welsh Sr. and Goldie Welsh (Howell), he was a longtime resident of Downers Grove.

He graduated from University of Kansas and Washburn University, where he obtained his JD. He subsequently attended University of Chicago for advanced legal study.

He met his wife, Marlys, in Wichita and they married in 1945. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, from 1944-1947. He was stationed in the Pacific as an aerial photographer.

After moving to Downers Grove in 1964, Mr. Welsh managed several professional associations, including the Optical Wholesalers, Illinois Optometrists and the Academy of General Dentistry.

Mr. Welsh had a passion for music, ballroom dancing and people. He and his wife taught dancing to students in the Chicago area for over 25 years, well into their 80's.

A celebration of his life will be held at the family home on Saturday, May 9, 2015, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.

we went with tried-and-true Italian traditions – tiramisu and cannoli.

The ladyfingers in the tiramisu imparted the coffee liqueur essence without being drenched, and a chocolate drizzle added to the delicate sweet treat. The cannoli’s delectable filling was surrounded by a slightly sweet and crisp shell, while crushed pistachios and an artful flourish of chocolate syrup added to the knockout flavor.

Throughout our meal, the service was attentive without being intrusive. Our plates quickly were taken away, our water glasses remained filled, and our leftovers were packaged promptly. Our server and busser always arrived at the table with a smile.

La Notte Due has lunch portions of its dinner menu available five days a week, and also offers a catering menu for anyone looking to bring the delicious taste of Italy home for a family party.

DARIEN – The phrase “la notte due” roughly translates from Italian as “the second night,” but La Notte Due could easily rank a first place in the local Italian dining pantheon.

My date and I arrived for an early weekend dinner recently and were promptly seated in the elegant yet comfortable dining room, where bread materialized at our table. The Darien restaurant’s modern interior is warmed by wood floors and the paintings of Italian scenery adorning the walls. White tablecloths also enhance the surroundings.

The attentive service that started with our arrival continued, with our water glasses quickly filled before our server came to take our drink order. Sentinels kick off girls soccer season

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – After struggling much of last season, Westmont’s girl’s soccer team picked up a playoff win in a regional quarterfinal.

With several players returning to the team and with an infusion of young talent, head coach Ron Neurauter believes this year’s squad is in line to have more success along the lines of the postseason win of a year ago.

“We’ve been building the last couple of years, and then we got some freshmen in who have some skill,” Neurauter

said. “For the first time, we’ve got a group that’s come to us with some skills. We’re not starting from scratch.”

Freshmen Kaitlyn Niemer and Kerry Slaga saw extensive action in a 5-0 loss against Montini in the season opener March 18, but junior captains Carlin Hastings, Lily LaLonde, Eliana O’Malley and Hannah O’Malley are the cornerstones of the team.

Hannah O’Malley returns as the keeper, Hastings will lead the defense and LaLonde and Eliana O’Malley join Niemer and Slaga in the midfield.

“We’ve kind of built the

team around those four,” Neurauter said.

The Sentinels also have depth few teams can match with 25 players on varsity. It’s the most players the team has had in some time (surpassing the 24 players last year), so many that Neurauter is working to set up JV games against Interstate Eight Conference foes.

34 Local coach recovers from stroke, hosts tennis camps

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Chuck Enge has given much of his life to tennis, and tennis may help save his life.

He has spent 50 years coaching tennis at the high school and club level, but that all seemed in jeopardy when he suffered a stroke Chuck Enge in May of 2014.

It seems that tennis may have been the key to a full recovery.

“Before the stroke I played singles four days a week,” Enge said. “The doctors told me, ‘That’s the reason you’re going to recover and you should get it all back.’

“They said, ‘We can’t believe what is happening to you. We don’t see people recover like you do.’”

Less than a year later Enge, a recipient of the United State Professional Tennis Association’s National Service Award and an Illinois High School Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Famer, is planning for a full summer of tennis-related activity. Currently, he is gearing up to lead a summer tennis clinic at the Downers Grove Swim & Racquet Club. The first clinic is scheduled for April 12.

After a summer full of clinics and camps at the club and at various area park districts, he will head to the U.S. Open during Labor Day weekend. In October, he will make his 15th trip to Norway in the past 12 years to continue his efforts to help Norwegian tennis players find places to play collegiately in the U.S. Enge has recovered to the point that his doctors have given him the freedom to travel on his own. He recently passed his driving test and purchased a new car. It’s clear that the stroke, which is sometimes a setback for those who suffer one, is having little impact on the way he wants to live his life.

“I have zero patience and I have only one speed,” Enge said.

“I haven’t slowed down a bit.”

Outlook: The DGS girls soccer team has their sights set on more than a 13th straight West Suburban Gold conference championship.

Chris Hernandez, a longtime Downers Grove South boys assistant soccer coach, is now spearheading the girls program and believes a strong veteran core as well as a bevy of newcomers will help the Mustangs come playoff time.

“We look to build upon our foundations of winning conference for the 13th straight year, but we are definitely a different team than last year,” Hernandez said. “The program is looking to win conference again, as well as claim a regional title.

“We have a very positive team dynamic, which has helped us set a high standard for ourselves. One of our biggest strengths is that everyone is starting over. All players understand that they need to prove themselves all over again.”

Valparaiso-bound Ava Porlier and fellow senior Miyax Leon anchor a dominating Mustangs midfield that also features sophomore Sarah Casey, who was brought up to the varsity squad near the end of last season.

Junior forward Autumn Rasmussen will try to build on a breakout sophomore campaign in which she led the team in scoring. She will be flanked by sophomore Mackenzie Wisdom, who saw some playing time after being brought up late in the 2014 season.

On the back line, junior Sara Foernssler was an all-conference defender last season while sophomore Hannah Rossi has the ability to become a shutdown defender.

Nick Klecki finished second in the high jump and third in the long jump while Jeremy Taylor came in third in the triple jump. Danny Capagna also took second in the shot put.

The team is comprised of players John Heneghan, Jack Sidler, Ethan Kelly, Emmit Culligan, Sion McKillip, Seth Coyle and Sam Weinheimer.

Matt Culligan is the head coach, Tom Heneghan is the assistant coach and Jack Culligan is the team manager.

Adam Jagielo’s two-out RBI powered the Westmont baseball team to its first victory of the season Friday against IC. After digging himself into an 0-2 hole, Jagielo laced a single to center field, scoring both Jackson Fischer and Adam Doll and giving the Sentinels a 6-4 lead that held up in the last inning and a half. Jagielo, the Sears Hardware & Appliance Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life Sports Editor Alex Soulier about the comeback win.

Soulier: How does it feel to get the first win of the season in comeback fashion?

Jagielo: It feels great to get a win after yesterday’s tough loss [in the season opener against RB]. This team never gives up, never stops fighting, so this was a great way to end

the week.

Soulier: It’s still very early in the season, but how are you feeling at the plate?

Jagielo: I was a little ner-

vous in my first at bat, but I felt pretty good in my second and third trips to the plate.

Soulier: Your third at bat in the top of the sixth was with two runners in scoring position.

Although you fell behind in the count, you were able to dig yourself out. Take me through that at bat.

Jagielo: I actually went up

to one of my coaches before that at bat and said if he [Doll] gets on, I’m going to knock all the runners in. He made a couple good pitches to get ahead in the count, but it was really cool to get that hit and keep my word.

WILLOWBROOK – The DGS girls track and field team won their 11th straight indoor conference title Friday night at Willowbrook, dominating the competition on both levels.

The varsity team won all 11 running events and two of the five field events to score 188 points, defeating second-place Morton by 81 points.

Shaliyah Dixon-Tucker won four events, including the 55-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 55-meter hurdles and the high jump. Additionally, Rachel Petro took first in the 300, Michaela Hackbarth recorded the top time in both the 400- and 800-meter events, and Abby Kargol won the 1600 and 3200.
