WESTMONT – The People’s Resource Center is moving on to bigger and better things, and opening its new Westmont location today.

The 13,000-square-foot office space is at 104 Chestnut Ave., across from Ty Warner Park.

The new location will offer a food pantry, clothes closet, computer literacy and art classes, job assistance and other social services. Resources will also continue to be available at the organization’s Wheaton facility at 201 S. Naperville Road.

Executive Director Kim Perez said the new location was necessary because of an increase in clients.

“Since we opened [in Westmont], we’ve seen our numbers served … more than triple,” she said.

When the original Westmont space opened in 2008, the facility served 300 people per month, Perez said – a number that has jumped to 1,000 people per month.

The old location had about 4,500 square feet – less than half that of the

WESTMONT – Westmont has no shortage of people and businesses helping make the village a better place, and many were honored March 25 during the annual Westmont Community Awards Dinner. The Hilton Chicago/Oak Brook and Robin Gardner took the top prizes of the night, winning Dick Busse Business of the Year and Citizen of the Year, respectively.

The dinner was hosted by the Westmont Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau. Chamber Executive Director Larry Forssberg said the organization has been facilitating the awards nearly 20 years, and the event grows each time.

“There’s a lot of volunteers in Westmont and there’s a lot of people doing a lot of things that, to a great degree, go unnoticed,” he said.

For each award, a nomination form is distributed in December and due back to the chamber in February.

The number of nominees varies from award to award and year to year.

The nominations go to a committee, which narrows them down based on set criteria, using a scoring system to pick a winner.

“Quite frankly, it’s very difficult because we have a lot of people doing a lot of good things,” Forssberg said.

Stefan Muhle, general manager of the Hilton Chicago/Oak Brook Hills Resort and Conference Center, said he is “intensely proud” to win Dick Busse Business of the Year.

The hotel, at 3500 Midwest Road, is a privately-owned business with local owners. It has been under new operation for nine months and is looking at more ways to be active in Westmont.

Muhle said the previous owners had a hands-off approach to dealing with the community.

“We are doing the exact opposite of that,” he said.

“We’re all just really excited. This is a huge accomplishment for us,” Perez said.

She said some programs were sharing space, while others did not have a designated area.

It wasn’t conducive to the needs of the organization, Perez said.

Linda Sobotka, a Westmont resident who has volunteered with the organization for seven years, said the clothes closet was one of the programs that didn’t have a set space. Volunteers had to unpack everything and set it up in the lobby of the old building. The program ran for 90 minutes and clients only had five minutes to shop.

“It was a little crazy,” Sobotka said.

She said she “can’t wait” to move into the new facility, which she likened to moving from a one-bedroom house to an eight-bedroom house.

“It’s going to be so much nicer for the people who come in,” she said.

Bob Senicka, another volunteer from Westmont, has been with the organization since the original Westmont location opened. He said the old space was “just too small” and difficult to navigate.

“You have so much stuff in there, you’re tripping over things,” he said.

The People’s Resource Center has raised more than $1.8 million in community donations to support the development of the new site, and hopes to collect a total of $2.75 million.

Donations of food, clothing, computer equipment, books and art supplies are

also being accepted.

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation recently named People’s Resource Center a 2014 Neighborhood Builder. As a result, the organization will receive $200,000 in flexible funding, which it will use to expand economic stability and employment service programs.

A case for the D-201 referendum

To the Editor: I strongly encourage anyone interested in what the passing of the upcoming referendum will accomplish to visit voteyes201.org. One can find details about the improvements planned, as well as a bounty of info as to why all Westmont homeowners – not just parents of students – will benefit from its passing.

As a homeowner with a family that has often lived paycheck to paycheck, I am certain that the improvements that will come are well worth the modest increase in our property taxes. If the plans were not sound and the details of how the money will be spent not transparent, there’s no way our family could support any tax increase. The goals outlined are very important ones, and shouldn’t be considered frivolities in this day and age. I plead that those against or unsure about the upcoming vote will visit the website to attain crucial info they may not have come across yet. I also plead

that supporters make sure to vote to further secure the success CUSD 201 has seen in recent years.

Lastly, I’d like to suggest that the school board has by no means ignored the voices of Westmont residents by attempting to get this referendum passed a third time, but instead listened to feedback given after the last two downvotes and narrowed its focus to satisfy those issues against it, while consistently focusing on the students in this district, which is, after all, what they’re elected to do. It’s quite common for referendums to take several attempts to pass, and had the board just given up after the first downvote, I think they’d be taking the easy way out and letting down those they’ve been elected to represent.

Please vote yes for CUSD 201 on April 7.

Please help continue pushing our district in the right direction.

NEWS BRIEFS Westmont Park District to host Easter Bunny breakfast

WESTMONT – The Westmont Park District will host a breakfast with the Easter Bunny on Saturday, the district announced in a news release.

The breakfast begins at 9:15 a.m. at the district’s administration building, 55 E. Richmond St. It will include an all-you-can-eat buffet with muffins, bagels, granola bars, doughnut holes, fruit, milk, water, juice and coffee.

Visitors will get an egg and a chance to color an Easter picture for a prize. The Easter Bunny also will be available for photographs.

Sales tax referendum OUR VIEW addresses stormwater Make an informed vote on control funding goal $19.7M schools referendum Calling it “sticker shock” might be an understatement for many Westmont residents.

Any price tag that reads close to $20 million is likely to give the person holding the bill cause for concern.

Just don’t let it scare you away from making an informed decision when you decide whether to make this purchase.

Westmont Community Unit School District 201 has placed a referendum on the April 7 ballot, asking voters if the district should issue $19.7 million in bonds to pay for facility improvements at four school buildings in the district.

Sound familiar? It should.

This is the district’s third attempt in just more than a year to pass a similar referendum. This version, however, features substantial changes.

For starters, it’s nearly $7 million cheaper than the $26.4 million referendum that failed by a 56 to 44 percent vote in November. The first effort, a $24.4 million referendum in March 2014, lost 78 to 22.

The price drop can be attributed, in large part, to the district’s decision to omit a pool renovation at Westmont High School and classroom resizing at Westmont Junior High.

The definition of “classroom” could be up for debate here, as well. Many of the class “rooms” at the high school and junior high are partially formed by large rolling bulletin boards.

Concern for student safety factors largely in the district’s sales pitch. Shatter-resistant glass would be installed in first-floor doors and windows at district schools. The entrances at Manning and Miller elementary schools would be re-routed through the main office, and adding walls at the high school also would include a more secure entrance.

If the referendum passes, it will add about $266 a year in property taxes for the owner of a $250,000 home.

Opponents are wondering why they’re getting stuck with the bill – why now? And why make all the changes – which include elevators at the elementary schools – with one referendum? The district’s answer is that current interest rates make this the right time.

Now, it’s up to you, the taxpaying voters.

Maybe you support the referendum so strongly you could hardly wait to get to the early voting poll.

Or maybe it’s not the right time or the right plan.

But don’t just look at the price tag. Make sure to weigh the value of the proposed investment to our schools before making your mark at the poll.

On April 7, Westmont voters will decide the future of stormwater management in our community.

I want to take a moment to thank all of the citizens, businesses, and community leaders who have stepped forward to be part of this important process. In the fall of 2013, Westmont COMMUNITY residents who were part of the ad hoc Stormwater VOICE Committee presented a Ron list of recommendations Gunter to the Village Board.

The main focus of their recommendations was identifying and securing a dedicated and ongoing revenue source that could only be used for stormwater management and infrastructure initiatives. The April 7 referendum question addresses this specific goal.

We recently experienced the coldest February ever, including the fifth largest snowstorm on record. Two years ago, we experienced the worst flood in the history of northeastern Illinois. It has been documented we have seen a dramatic increase in heavy precipitation events in the past 10 years, and the fact is that our infrastructure simply does not properly manage these emerging weather patterns. The goal of this referendum is to present a possible solution for residents to consider.

Unfortunately, the village can not make significant stormwater management improvements without first identifying a revenue source. Following the lead of our citizens, the Village Board has put forth a referendum question to ask residents to consider creating a revenue source dedicated exclusively to stormwater-infrastructure improvements in the form of a local retail sales tax. If approved, there would be a half-penny sales tax for every dollar spent on most retail purchases in Westmont. It should be noted most DuPage communities already have a local general sales tax. Currently, Westmont does not.

I think if the Westmont referendum for [School District] 201 fails to pass April 7, the town needs to pick a new motto.

For a suburb that touts itself as “The Progressive Village,” residents should be embarrassed that their schools aren’t close to ADA compliant. I can’t wrap my head around residents not being in favor of bringing their district buildings into the 21st century. There’s something very wrong about prioritizing money ahead of the safety and well-being of our kids. It takes a village, remember?

DOWNERS GROVE – Community High School District 99 is increasing students’ access to technology, approving a $1.8 million lease to purchase personal devices for students starting next year.

At its March 16 meeting, the district’s Board of Education approved entering a lease agreement to purchase 3,700 Chromebooks to serve all students in the district.

The program will begin in the fall semester of the 2015-16 school year. According to board documents, the district just finished a pilot program with the devices and decided to move forward with the program.

The total lease is $1,760,180, which will cover the cost of 3,700 Chromebooks and cases for students and laptops for teachers and administrators.

When adding in interest, the total annual payment due by the district will be $595,251, according to Mark Staehlin, controller for the district.

The district will use three sources of revenue to repay the lease. The first is

through student fees, which are expected to cover $252,000 of the lease. The student fee will be $90.

“We just felt the way to have this program be able to be presented … is charge a fee for devices,” Staehlin said.

Of the student fee, $70 will be used for the payment of devices and the remaining $20 will be used to provide insurance for the devices.

Currently, the district has $143,251 set aside in this year’s budget to cover a lease for staff devices that has been rolled into the new lease. The $143,251 will be used this fall to pay off a portion of the Chromebook lease.

The remaining $200,000 will be paid for out of the operating fund in the district’s budget.

“The district will have to reallocate some of its budget,” Staehlin said.

According to board documents, the district decided to move forward with a lease program instead of paying the full cost up front because it would be less of a financial impact on the district in one fiscal year.

WATER METER READING DEVICE PROJECT The Village has begun a 12-month process of replacing the meter transmission units (MTU) that send water meter readings from residential and business customer meters to the Village for water billing.

The Village's vendor, Aclara, and their contractor Scope Services, will remove the existing MTUs and install the new ones at each building over the course of 2015. There will not be service or billing disruptions when the units are replaced.

Most MTU replacements will take less than 30 minutes and will occur entirely on the exterior of the building, with the same exterior placement as the existing MTU. For locations where the MTU is inside a home or building, Scope will make an appointment with the customer to access the unit.

Scope will maintain a customer service line, 1-888-209-5075, to respond to inquiries from residents and businesses. Customers may also contact the Village with questions.

EARLY VOTING Early voting will continue through Saturday, April 4, 2015, in the Committee Room at the Village Hall, 801 Burlington Avenue.

The hours for early voting will be Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

WESTMONT – Last season, Westmont’s baseball team made it to the state finals for the first time in 25 years and brought home a third-place trophy in Class 2A. If the Sentinels return to state it won’t be a surprise to many, and it will have come after taking every opponent’s best shot and facing some elite teams.

“Everybody knows about us now.

We’re not going to sneak up on anybody, but it really doesn’t feel like it’s brought us any extra pressure, to be honest,” head coach DJ Cocks said.

“We’ve beefed up our nonconference schedule a little bit and we may take a few more losses, which is fine.

“We’ve got to establish ourselves as the team we want to be for the playoffs and then just go one game at a time because we can’t look ahead that far. We didn’t last year and I believe that was part of our success.”

Despite graduating nine seniors who were key contributors to last season’s success, the Sentinels still have plenty of talent to make another deep playoff run.

All-state shortstop and Michigan recruit Charlie Donovan returns for his final high school season after batting .500 with 47 RBIs and 50 runs scored last year.

Younger brother Joe Donovan batted .412 with 43 runs scored as a freshman last year, but among other returners only Anthony Alessi, Kevin Melvin and Anthony Powers had more than 50 at bats last season. The offense could take a little time to develop, but solid defense and a deep pitching staff will help lessen the burden on the offense.

“We’ve got a lot of depth on the mound; I’m excited about that,” Cocks said. “Almost every guy in our dugout pitches, and they’re not just throwers, they’re pitchers. We’ve got a lot of positive things going for us right now.”

Austin Loehman went 5-2 last year with a 3.16 ERA. He returns with the most mound experience, although Alessi, Charlie Donovan, Melvin and

Newcomer Jackson Fischer is another quality arm who can play almost any position defensively. Anthony Powers (second base) and Adam Doll (center field) are slotted at key defensive positions.

“Powers is a big part of this as well playing second base for us, and one of the nice things about Jackson is he can play any infield spot, so when Charlie comes in to pitch we’ve got a shortstop, which is huge,” Cocks said. “Jackson has got a good arm and he’s going to be one of our top pitchers.”

In an effort to get playoff ready, Westmont scheduled nonconference games against larger schools. The Sentinels lost 2-0 against Riverside Brookfield in the season opener and topped Nazareth 7-5 on Monday. Both schools were regional champions in Class 3A last year. Westmont plays Class 4A Niles Notre Dame on Thursday.

“Many regard [Nazareth] as the No. 1 team in 3A, so hats off to the way our guys came out and played,” Cocks said.

“We’re starting to figure out our identity here a little bit.

“I just hope we have a great season and get the most out of our potential.”

Even after graduating two of its top players after last season, the 2015 Benet baseball team returns 17 seniors and boasts a strong crop of hitters, including Connor Hickey (.376 average in 2014), Jon Kruppe (.330) and Villanova-bound Cole Channell (.300).

Outlook: A seasoned pitching staff plus a wealth of experience could equate to a big year on the diamond for Downers Grove North.

With an opening-day lineup featuring 13 seniors and eight juniors, Trojans head coach Chad Isaacson is optimistic his aces and team leaders can carry the load this spring.

“Our pitching staff is going to keep us in a lot of games,” Isaacson said.

“We will look to compete every day and continually get better. We have a good mix of kids that are prepared and working hard to get better.”

So far, so good as DGN began the season with back-to-back wins against Wheaton Warrenville South and Wheaton North.

After posting a 1.55 ERA in 2014, senior ace Brett Pyburn took the mound in the season opener Thursday against WWS, allowing two earned runs and striking out five in 4 2/3 innings. Nic Laio then came on in relief and threw 2 1/3 hitless innings as the Trojans scored in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to secure a 3-2 victory.

Two days later, Ryan Andrews got his first start of the 2015 campaign against Wheaton North. The 6-foot-3 senior spread out three hits and two unearned runs during six innings of another 3-2 win.

Senior Myles Farley will be counted

on to fill a variety of roles this season.

He is not only one of the Trojans’ topfour pitchers, notching a 2-0 record and a 3.50 ERA last season, but also is one of the team’s most consistent hitters, batting .329 and knocking in 26 RBIs in 2014. Additionally, Farley is regarded as a solid defender and will start at shortstop when he isn’t pitching.

Filling out the middle of the order are seniors Cappetta and Pat Geraghty, who drove in 20 and 22 runs, respectively, last season. Junior Brendan Shanahan also is back in the fold after hitting for a .280 average in 2014.

Dalton Baran, Jake Stevenson and Jack Warwick will provide infield depth for the Trojans.

Outlook: The Downers Grove South baseball team is looking to build off the program’s recent success.

After a banner year in which the Mustangs recorded 28 victories and won regional and sectional championships, a handful of returning pitchers and positional players appear poised for another run through conference and into the playoffs.

Senior Ryan Taylor is one of the most versatile player in the DGS lineup. The three-year starter will pitch and play third base and catcher this season and is an important piece to the Mustangs’ success.

The same can be said of senior Joe Engel, another three-year varsity starter who will play shortstop this year and was arguably the team’s most complete defensive and offensive player in 2014.

Danny Oriente will provide some pop out of the three hole and will see time behind the plate and in the outfield. Additionally, righty Peter Hamot, who pitched significant innings as a junior, will again be counted on to be a workhorse this spring.

Senior Danny Kasher and lefty juniors Ty McCulloch and Zack Jones also will see ample time on the bump.

The Mustangs start the season today at a tournament in Memphis, Tenn.

The Downers Grove North girls track and field team won the March 20 West Suburban Conference Silver Division indoor conference championship for the first time since 1993.

Sophomore Emma Moravec placed first in the 800-meter and 400-meter sprints and participated in the Trojans’ firstplace 4x400 team that also included Rachel Schuetz, Zayna Jan and Hannah Henry. Isabel Maletich also took home gold in the long jump while Schuetz won the 300-meter dash.

Second place finishes were recorded by Maletich in the triple jump, Sophie Temple-Wood in the 200, Jaida Green in the high jump and the 4x200 relay of Schuetz, Henry, Temple-Wood and Faith LaMantia.

The Trojan girls then broke two school records Saturday at the Illinois Top Times Championships in Bloomington.

The 4x400 team finished fourth with a time of 4:04.47, breaking a school record they previously set during the DGS Mustang Relays. Additionally, Maletich’s triple jump of 35-feet, 6-inches broke a 2012 school record and earned her sixth place at the meet.

Also competing at the Illinois Top Times Championships were Moravec, who placed fourth in the 800, and the 4x200 and 4x800 Trojan girls relay teams.

Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, 3815 Highland Ave. Downers Grove, IL, had a single minor Mercury violation on April 2, 2013 from a composite sample collected by Downers Grove Sanitary District while conducting their random, semi-annual sampling. The reported concentration was 0.0007 mg/L, which was over the 0.0005 mg/L permitted concentration. There was an investigation into hazardous waste disposal and with all the departments at this facility by their representative. No source was found for this mercury violation. They conducted follow-up testing of 3 composite samples collected May 23, 2013, May 24, 2013, and May 25, 2013, which showed levels of mercury were below the permitted concentration of 0.0005 mg/L. All 3 samples were analyzed at a contract laboratory. On July 31, 2013 Downers Grove Sanitary District received contract lab reports verifying sample results for this testing.

All 3 samples were analyzed at a contract laboratory, which Downers Grove Sanitary District received verifying sample results for this testing.
