eshields@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – Community Unit School District 201 is considering expanding its use of electronic devices in the classroom. At its April 14 meeting, the Board of Education received an update on the proposed changes from Nadine Norris, director of technology, teaching and learning for the district. The board discussed making the changes but did not take any formal action. The district has devices for sixth-graders at Westmont Junior High School. Officials are considering expanding devices to all students at the junior high, and increasing technology at Manning and Miller elementary schools and Westmont High School. Norris said the district has $119,000 set aside in the upcoming budget to replace 140 desktop computers and 35 laptops at the junior high. Under the plan being considered, the district would put that technology in the elementary schools and high school instead. The district also would buy Chromebooks for students at the junior high at a cost of $276 per device – a total ex-

pense of $99,360. Regardless of whether the district moves forward with purchasing the Chromebooks, Norris said the district plans to spend $38,862 on upgrades to district wireless networks. Some board members had asked about the ability for the district to purchase iPads for the students, but Norris said iPads would be considerably more expensive. Each would cost $420 and would not include a keyboard. She said the specific device purchase is less about which platform has the highest student appeal, but rather what is the best tool for performing various educational tasks. “What we need to do is make our

Board member Mary Kay Caporali echoed that sentiment. “The job is in the classroom, and if the Chromebooks are satisfactory for that learning environment, then that’s what we should stay with,” she said. Board member Joel Price said going with a more expensive device could mean an inability to expand the program in the future. Board member Matt Johnson agreed, saying the district needs to work within its budget, and Chromebooks would be an appropriate way to move forward. “It’s in line with where we want to go,” he said.

DENTAL TERMINOLOGY
Q: Some dental terms, like ‘calculus’, seem strange. Where do they come from? A: Calculus, also known as tartar, is the name for a hard deposit that forms when plaque hardens on the teeth. The word comes from the Latin for “small pebbles”, similar to the sliding stones of an abacus. That’s why a branch of mathematics has the same name. As with any specialized practice, dentistry has its own nomenclature. And that nomenclature has developed over the centuries from both Latin and Greek. So the words may sound strange or exotic. Here are some other terms you might hear in your dentist’s office: • Alveolus – the opening in your jawbone in which a tooth is attached • Cementum – the bony substance that covers the root of a tooth • Cuspal – denotes the chewing or tearing points of the cuspids, bicuspids and molars • Apex – the very bottom of the root of a tooth • Dentin – the calcium part of a tooth beneath the enamel that contains the pulp chamber • Caries – another name for a cavity or tooth decay • Lingual – the tooth surface that is next to your tongue • Radiograph – another name for an x-ray • Gingivits – inflammation of the gums and an early sign of what’s called periodontal, or gum, disease. Never hesitate to ask your dentist to explain the meaning of any term you don’t understand

WESTMONT – Westmont hosted the kickoff event for a statewide reading initiative this weekend. Illinois Reads: A Reading State of Mind launched Saturday at Westmont High School. The event featured 22 Illinois authors who took part in book signings and story time. There also were guest appearances by Secretary of State Jesse White, the Jesse White Tumblers and members of the 1985 Chicago Bears. Participants entered on a red carpet and were greeted by paparazzi. There also was a miniature Taste of Westmont, featuring food from local vendors. Illinois Reads was introduced in March 2013 by the Illinois Reading Council, an organization that provides support and leadership to those who promote and teach lifelong literacy. The program offers a list of books by Illinois authors for six age levels. This is the first year a school district has held the kickoff, which will be hosted by a different district each year moving forward. For information, visit illinoisreads. org.

Many kids have dreams of making it in Hollywood. Living in the midwest, it seems difficult to translate those dreams into reality. According to Lisa Morgan, owner of MBM Talent Management, it’s not as difficult as you think. Years ago, Lisa, a Chicago native, had a young son interested in acting. He worked hard, starting in commercials and eventually landing the part as Mel Gibson’s son Nathan in “The Patriot”. Lisa acted as his manager, gaining experience and making connections in L.A. After living in California, she moved back to the midwest and started developing local talent here in the Chicago area. For a ballet-themed show called “Bunheads”, Lisa started looking at dance studios. What she found impressed her; boys and girls involved in dance classes proved to have a lot of talent. Advanced dancers, especially, exhibited an amazing amount of discipline, work ethic, confidence, and passion for their art. Dancing helps kids prepare for a ca-
reer in acting in various ways: dancing on stage helps many overcome stage fright and shyness; dancers gain confidence in their skills through the many years they spend perfecting their art; and skills learned in taking direction and criticism, and working hard to do their best, translates well from the studio to the set. According to Lisa, kids don’t have to live in L.A. to find success in Hollywood. She describes acting as a relationship-based business; her company, MBM (Management By Morgan), matches agents with kids who have a goal to be in film. MBM Talent Management will be offering a mini-workshop at Pure Vibe Dance Center in Westmont on April 18th. The 3-hour workshop will introduce participants to the audition process, including what agents are looking for and what is needed from aspiring actors and actresses.

WESTMONT VILLAGE BOARD | 4 THINGS TO KNOW
NEWS BRIEF
Board approves sales tax increase
Local walkathon to raise money, awareness for genetic disease
By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – The Westmont Village Board tackled four notable items during its April 16 meeting.
1. Sales tax to increase by half percent
The board officially approved the one-half percent sales tax increase green-lighted by voters April 7. The increase is expected to create an additional $800,000 to $1 million in revenue for stormwater improvements in the village. Finance Director Spencer Parker said information about the increase will be sent to the state and the tax will begin being collected in July. Village officials have previously said it would be May 2016 before funds could be used. Mayor Ron Gunter said there are still several steps that need to be taken before they know exactly how the money will be implemented into action. The board unanimously approved

Human trafficking is the illegal trade of human beings, mainly for the purposes of forced labor and sex trafficking. As the world’s second largest criminal industry, it affects 27 million people across the globe. This alarming fact means there are more slaves in the world today than at any other point in human history. According to the A21 Campaign, the average age of these victims is 12 to 14 years old and tragically only 1 percent to 2 percent of them are ever rescued. In an industry that is so dehumanizing and rapidly growing, it is difficult to have hope. However, it’s beautiful what can happen when people come together to fight for a common cause. I am a junior at Westmont High School and saw the dire need to raise awareness about this issue when I came to the realization many people, especially teens my age, didn’t know what human trafficking was. Therefore, I took a course at my school last year called Changemakers, which is an English elective that gives students the opportunity to pursue their passions and create real-life change in the world through authentic learning and action research. As my yearlong project, I decided to organize a conference on human trafficking. Through this conference, I hoped to educate and

What comes first SB 1 just another dose of when determining the same bad medicine property taxes? OUR VIEW
The Illinois property tax system uses the assessed value to determine your portion of the local tax burden. Assessments are normally published in September or October in Downers Grove Township and are available on our website. Tax bills are mailed in early May. In the beginning of May, the clerk prints and mails the tax bills, which list all of the taxing bodies that provide services to you or your property. Individual tax bills are calculated, as follows: Assessed value minus exemptions equals billing/net assessed value. Multiply that by the tax rate to get the tax bill amount. The tax bill is normally paid in two equal installments due June 1 and Sept. 1 to DuPage County Treasurer Gwen Henry. After the taxes are paid, the treasurer begins to transfer the collected funds to each taxing body. Shortly thereafter, the cycle begins again. What comes first depends on your viewpoint.

Some movie sequels we’re delighted to see in theaters, and some seem to have been conceived even though nobody wanted them. The arrival of Illinois Senate Bill 1 this year appears to fall into the latter camp. SB 1 is largely a tweaked version of the previous Legislature’s much-maligned Senate Bill 16, which generated a lot of headlines before meeting its end when it failed to come to a vote in the House. SB 16 would have restructured how funding was distributed around the state based on the neediness of the student populations in each district. Critics said the bill would unfairly take from wealthier districts without boosting overall education funding – DuPage County schools, for instance, were in line to lose $140 million in funding. SB 16’s death was lauded in many corners as a good first step toward real education funding reform. “This is a huge success for the suburban taxpayers who would have been fleeced by the provisions of SB 16,” State Rep. Ron Sandack, R-Downers Grove, said in December. That success appears to have been a fleeting one as SB 1 now rears its ugly head. Like its predecessor, the bill hits west suburban districts disproportionately, with massive reductions in funding. The Illinois State Board of Education has projected what it would do for each district in the state, based on 2014 numbers, and it’s not pretty. For instance: • Community High School District 99 in Downers Grove would give up more than $3 million from the $3.9 million it got in 2014. • Westmont District 201 would lose $967,000
of the $1.2 million it got in 2014. • Lisle District 202 would be forced to forgo about $1 million of its $1.2 million in funding. • Valley View District 365U (which serves Bolingbrook, Romeoville and Downers Grove), on the other hand, would get an $8.8 million boost on top of its $35 million in funding. • The city of Chicago schools would gain more than $267 million in funding, on top of the about $1.3 billion it got for 2014. (Just to be clear, no one would actually give up money they got in 2014; these numbers just apply the proposed formula to what was paid out that year.) “This approach to education funding [in SB 1] is a pure winners/losers scenario, which is not the way that I think we should approach education funding from the state perspective,” said state Sen. Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, during a recent visit to the Suburban Life newsroom. Gutting the finances of relatively healthy districts to try to prop up currently underfunded districts is a terrible solution. When the push for SB 16 was in full swing, many legislators and school officials told Suburban Life that some amount of reapportionment was fair, but that the dollar amounts being considered were catastrophic to the areas that would lose money. They still are catastrophic under SB 1. It’s good that school funding formulas are under scrutiny, because the current model is terrible, too. This conversation needs to continue. But this bill does more harm than good, and it should be scrapped.

Do your research before adopting rescue animals
Please stop wasting the time of pet rescue volunteers. We are volunteers who are not paid, we have jobs, families and we are doing this for the love of the animals that we are trying to find permanent homes for. Do not fill out an application for a pet unless every family member is aware of it. ... You must weigh the pros and cons of rescuing an animal, it is not the thing to do for everybody. ... So please, until you are 100 percent ready to adopt, do not fill out the application.
‘School should never be used as a free baby-sitting service’
What a firestorm [that has resulted from my initial Sound Off], but I stand by my theory. To the parent making tough choices, if you are already struggling to achieve the American Dream, then adding children to the mix won’t be helping your situation. Next, one should never need two incomes to support a family. If you do, you do either need a better paying job or you are living above your means. To the reader that worries about someone dying or becoming disabled, that’s what insurance policies are for ... Whatever your situation, the school system should never be used as a free baby-sitting service.
Hillary Clinton is not above the law Who can be the U.S. secretary of state and hide all her emails on a private server at home in clear violation of federal regulation? And then, when under subpoena to provide the emails, you erase the whole server. And here’s the amazing part, she does not face prosecution like we would if we did the same thing. Hillary Clinton, the new champion of the middle class. When she is president, we will all be able to ignore the law too, won’t we?

Taxes are cause for concern
After reviewing the village of Lemont’s agendas and minutes, I am confused after reading about a street and bridge tax, a lighting tax and a places for eating tax. Are these new or proposed taxes? Is anyone else concerned?
Stop frivolously funding the Downtown Wheaton Association
Wheaton City Council needs to accept the fact that the downtown area and the [Downtown Wheaton Association] is a fraction of the city of Wheaton. As long as the Wheaton City Council keeps providing this supposed entity money, because of its inefficiency and monumental lack of self-reliance, it will never learn to budget and financially plan. Once the members of the DWA become solely invested, they may quickly learn and thrive in a way that would attract more shoppers and businesses.

Construction companies need to pay for damage caused to roads
I just read that the village of La Grange Park is going to spend a lot of their funds to repair the roads near the Heatherdale subdivision. Those roads were beaten up by the heavy construction traffic for the better part of three years. Shame on you, voters of Westmont School District 201, for voting down a much-needed referendum for a third time. Especially sad is the incorrect assumption made by those who promoted the mentality that the money would somehow pay teachers’ pensions rather than facility improvements and security upgrades. I guess you can’t quite figure out what is really important to provide a safe learning environment, which would ultimately enhance your property values. The district and board were diligent, and you were cowards.

College of DuPage comes under federal investigation By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com In an event signaling more trouble for the long-embattled College of DuPage, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has issued a subpoena to the school for documents pursuant to an official criminal investigation. The subpoena, dated April 13, revolves around financial records for senior staff and trustees, communications and contracts involving college foundation members as far back as Jan. 1, 2009. The legal action follows a similar investigation by the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office in recent months. “The College of DuPage and the College of DuPage Foundation are confident in the proper conduct of their affairs and will fully cooperate with any government investigation,” college spokesman Randall Samborn said. Board Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, who has been an outspoken critic of the current trustees and administration and is poised to become the next chairwoman, said the college intended to cooperate with law enforcement but also gave some stern advice. “I want to issue a warning to the administrators and any other individual at the college not to destroy any papers or transactions ... or any evidence of the potential of wrongdoing – that’s a criminal offense,” she said. Hamilton said she had reason to believe “something like that is going on” but declined to speak further. Chairwoman Erin Birt did not respond to a request for comment. A major focus of the investigation centers on the spending habits of President Robert Breuder, trustees and senior management. In November, it was revealed college officials ex-
pensed questionable items at on-campus restaurant Waterleaf, including meals for trustees and more than $1,000 in alcohol for a trustee Christmas party. The board also has been under fire for a $763,000 buyout awarded to Breuder earlier this year. The trustees were scheduled to meet April 16, but officials announced a cancellation, citing deference to the new members elected April 7. Samborn said there was “no connection between the receipt of the federal grand jury subpoenas and decisions not to hold the meeting.” The subpoena also delved into accusations that foundation board members inappropriately received preferential treatment for contracts for work at the college. Particular controversy last month surrounded foundation board member Carla Burkhart, who got $630,000 in no-bid contracts for design work at the school through her firm Herricane Graphics. College and foundation officials have since defended the work, with foundation Executive Director Catherine Brod – who has announced she is stepping down in October – saying in a statement that foundation board members with contracts had been doing work for the school before serving on the board. A separate federal subpoena was issued April 13 for information about the college’s Suburban Law Enforcement Academy. The document asked for class records, instructor certificates, transcripts and communication between several top academy officials. The school is required to provide all records to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Lisle office or testify April 23 before a grand jury at the Dirksen Federal Building in Chicago for the first subpoena and April 30 for the second.

D-99 facility upgrades could cost $100 million By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Community High School District 99 is looking at potential facility upgrades that could top $100 million. The district has been working with Wight & Co., an architecture firm in Darien, on the plans. Craig Siepka, a lead architect with the company, presented the information to the Board of Education at its April 13 meeting. To perform all the proposed upgrades at Downers Grove North High School would cost $44.5 million to $47.8 million. Upgrades at Downers Grove South High School would cost $43.1 million to $46.4 million. This does not include air conditioning and heating units for any additions. Performing an upgrade on everything included in the proposal would range from $92.6 million to $111.7 million. The board did not discuss how the projects would be funded. The plan was developed with input
“It’s not realistic for me to present things to my clients that I know my clients can’t afford to do. And I have to say, with all frankness, I feel a little bit like that’s what I’m looking at right here.” Michael Davenport Community High School District 99 Board member
from district community members, administrators and faculty. “The plan is a result of input from a lot of people,” Superintendent Mark McDonald said. At Downers North, upgrades would include common instructional areas, fine arts classrooms, new fitness areas, and library and cafeteria improvements. North Associate Principal Ken Sorensen identified several locations where additions could be made, including the student and event entrance on the west side of the building and the nearby loading dock, the courtyard and
classrooms on the building’s south side. At Downers Grove South, improvements would include new administration offices, a new student services center, a new main entrance separate from the student entrance, fine arts classrooms and auditorium upgrades. South Associate Principal Omar Davis said the auditorium has room to improve. “There are some challenges, spacewise,” he said. Board members were in favor of the upgrades, but had concerns, including cost. Board member Michael Davenport said a lot of the proposal included
items the board would have to address in the future. “It’s not realistic for me to present things to my clients that I know my clients can’t afford to do. And I have to say, with all frankness, I feel a little bit like that’s what I’m looking at right here,” he said. Board member Terry Pavesich said this is only one portion of the master facilities plan. When figuring in everything else, total cost could expand to $150 million. Board member Julia Beckman said the board went through a similar plan 15 years ago, and most of the items presented were cut from the old plan because of cost. “These are issues that have dragged on and on, and I think it’s great they’re going into the plan,” she said. Board members agreed the administration would have to prioritize items in the plan to find out which projects are the biggest need for the district. The master facilities plan will return to the board for further consideration in the summer.

He said the plan suggests connecting organizations with utilities for energy audits, connecting people to grants and fast-tracking LEED-certified building projects. He added the council has a marketing plan, including online information and social media engagement to increase participation, saying “it will only be successful if people know about it.” Cronin called the goals thoughtful, substantive and achievable but acknowledged much of the hard work influencing a change in behavior was ahead of the county. “We’re going to do everything we can to leverage our positions as county leaders partnering with The Conservation Foundation and the Sierra Club,” he said. “We really think we have an opportunity to get this message out and continually bang the drum about the virtues of it.”

County leaders came together Tuesday to announce plans for a greener DuPage during the next decade and a half. In a news conference at the DuPage County Administrative Building, the DuPage Green Government Council announced a public awareness initiative aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions around the county by 10 percent by 2020 and 20 percent by 2030. County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said the Cool DuPage program, an offshoot of a Sierra Club’s nationwide county initiative, is a continuation of environmental work in the county. “For more than two decades, DuPage County government has implemented a series of policies that benefit the environment and provide savings for taxpayers,” he said. He pointed to the construction of a power plant for the county complex, the purchase of more than 30 alternative fuel vehicles, rooftop vegetation and solar panels and the replacement of old equipment with more energy efficient models as examples of the progress the county has made. Should the county reach its goals, it will be equivalent to taking more than 480,000 vehicles off the road each year, Cronin said. Jack Darin, director of the Illinois Chapter of the Sierra Club, said local government involvement on air pollution problems is critical. “Our local government leaders – they’re focused every day on delivering basic services and results for their citizens,” he said. “And DuPage County has shown us by example with what they’ve done ... that energy efficiency pays off big time.” Cronin and fellow county board member and Environmental Committee Chairman Tony Michelassi said the effort could not only make a difference for the environment and public health, but also for businesses and private pocketbooks. Michelassi said businesses with a 500,000 square-foot office building could save up to $120,000 annually at the 20-percent target through energy efficiency. Average annual savings for a participating household could be upwards of $360. Brook McDonald, president and CEO of The Conservation Foundation, said the plans had been in the works for several years and emphasized having real, attainable numbers and plans. McDonald said the diverse effort will require buy-in from all energy users, especially businesses – which use half of all the electricity and energy in

dose as of March 24. Cullerton said he spoke to police chiefs and other first responders across the state about the bill, and saw significant support. Funding would go through the Department of Human Services on a basis of voluntary enrollment, he said. Ambulance crews, firefighters and police could be outfitted with the spray and trained. Fire and police standards boards are putting together training program proposals. The proposal’s fiscal impact study is ongoing, Cullerton said, but he believed there should be room in the
ever-tightening state budget for a program to combat a drug that crosses the demographic spectrum. “Things are going to have to be prioritized, but I think saving people’s lives should be a priority,” he said. “A lot of people don’t understand or think that heroin will affect their family. ... It doesn’t discriminate on your income or your race or who you are. This drug comes in and eats you up and it’s killing people.” DuPage County’s program had some concerns about funding until former Oak Brook resident Ed Heil matched the health department’s original seed
money with a $50,000 donation and a fundraising nonprofit was created. DuPage County Health Department Executive Director Karen Ayala said in a statement that the DuPage Narcan Program believed “other counties would like to experience similar success, but given the state’s budget challenges, we will have to wait and see what develops as far as specific legislation on this issue.” Legislation proposed by State Sen. Michael Connelly, R-Lisle, was passed April 14 to allow school nursing personnel to administer the spray. Cullerton said his bill has left committee and will likely be voted on in the near future. He said the county’s comprehensive awareness, education and prevention has led the way on the heroin problem and provides an example for the rest of the state. “We’ve really taken a lead here in DuPage because it hit us the hardest first,” he said. “We have a lot of proactive people on both sides of the aisle when they see problems arise.”

One of DuPage County’s signature programs in the fight against heroin may be going statewide. State Sen. Tom Cullerton, D-Villa Park, is a co-sponsor for a bill that would, if passed, give first responders across the state access to Narcan, a nasal spray that can help prevent the effects of opioid overdose. The issue became a focus for county officials and community members after 2013, when 48 residents died of heroin-related causes. “That’s something that everyone in DuPage County has been striving to find a solution to,” Cullerton said. The DuPage County Health Department spearheaded an effort to equip more than 2,000 people, largely local police, with the spray at the beginning of 2014. It has since saved 49 lives. According to numbers from the DuPage County Coroner’s Office, only three people have died of heroin over-

The Masters Tournament, commonly referred to as The Masters, is one of the most prestigious events in professional golf. The first of the sport’s four major tournaments to be played each year, the Masters is held every April at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. Started by Augusta’s founders, investment banker Clifford Jones and legendary golfer Bobby Jones, the Masters is rife with tradition. Among the more notable traditions is the awarding of the green jacket to the tournament champion. The green jacket has been awarded to the tournament champion since 1949, and it remains one of the more recognizable awards or trophies in all of professional sports. Another tradition of the Masters is the Champions Dinner, which takes place the Tuesday before each tournament. Only past Masters champions and a select group of Augusta National board members are eligible to attend the dinner. Though the Masters is one of the most popular sporting events in the world, controversy surrounding Augusta National Golf Club arose in 2002 when Martha Burk, then the chair of the National Council of Women’s Organizations, accused the club of sexism due to the club’s refusal to offer membership to females. Though the Masters Tournament itself had little to do with the controversy, corporate sponsors shied away from the 2003 and 2004 tournaments, which were ultimately broadcast commercial-free. A decade after Burk’s protests began, the board at Augusta National finally offered membership to two women.

9 ways to improve your golf game Warmer weather sends scores of golfers to their favorite courses each and every day. Golf is a challenging pastime, but a few pointers can help golfers hone their short games, long games and everything in between. • Choose the right clubs. There is more to selecting clubs than pulling any old iron out of your golf bag and whacking away. Wind, hazards and obstructions in landing areas should influence your decision of which club to use. Novice golfers may want to rely on their caddies to make club recommendations, and as they become more confident in their abilities they can start to make their own choices. • Anchor your feet. Anchor your foot behind the ball to drive the ball further. Right-handed players will
keep the right foot anchored, and lefties will do the opposite. Do not lift your foot prematurely; otherwise, you can lose power and distance. • Identify your weaknesses. As with any hobby, identifying those areas that need the most work can help you become a better golfer. Keep track of each shot you take, and then look at the results to see which areas of your game need the most work. • Fix your alignment. Align your shots by assessing the target from behind the ball. Then set the clubface behind the golf ball and align it with the target before you enter your stance. • Use your torso for power. The torso is essential to a solid swing. Practice rotating from your core to control your backswing and then maintain the same
o la a fam l a fa o
spine angle and posture on the downswing. • Use the wind. Not every golf game will be played in perfect weather. A good player knows how to make adjustments for the wind depending on the shot. Use the wind to your advantage when you can, and adjust your swing when hitting into the wind. • Become a better chipper. Many players put so much emphasis on their backswings and putt shots that they fail to devote any practice to chips. All shots are important for golfers trying to shed strokes off of their scores. • Keep fit. Maintaining or improving your physical strength and overall health can help your golf game. Exercise and eat right, and you will have more endurance on the links.

WHEATON – The location, decor and ambience have changed, but the service and food remain impeccable. Lu’s Sushi & Chinese, which closed its Glen Ellyn doors last summer after the owners lost their lease, opened a Wheaton location in the fall to much fanfare. While patrons of the old Lu’s will notice the restaurant’s email and phone number remain the same even after the move – something the owners kept intact to ensure they would not lose their faithful fan base – the new space provides appealing upgrades. First, the new Town Square Wheaton location offers a cozier experience compared to the former digs. There are about 15 tables in the main dining room, as well as an adjacent private area separated by a string curtain. Asian lanterns hang from the ceiling and the walls are adorned with green leaf prints, consistent with the all-natural theme, which also resonates in the restaurant’s many plants and the ornately carved vegetables turned into flower garnishes that add their visual pop to some main courses. For more culinary drama, the new Lu’s positioned the sushi bar and open kitchen next to the dining area so customers can watch as their Chinese and Japanese meals are prepared. The menu remains extensive, offering Chinese dishes including hand-pulled noodle soups, along with sushi, sashimi and traditional Japanese fare. Beer, wine and sake are part of the full bar’s selections. My date and I arrived about 5 p.m. on a Friday, narrowly beating the happy hour patrons – the restaurant soon became comfortably crowded, which I took as a sign the place has been well-received by both new and old clientele. We were seated immediately and promptly welcomed by our server. Those unfamiliar with Lu’s or Asian cuisine might be a little overwhelmed with the

Chicago, Illinois – Professional women’s soccer outďŹ t Chicago Red Stars opened its National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season with a bang on Saturday night, defeating defending regular season champions Seattle Reign FC 3-2, courtesy of a dramatic stoppage-time winner by forward Christen Press. The U.S. Women’s National Team star had a standout performance in the victory, as she bagged two goals as well as the assist on teammate Jen Hoy’s ďŹ rst-half tally. After an uneventful opening half hour, Seattle were ďŹ rst to get on the board. U.S. international Megan Rapinoe swung in a corner kick from the right and saw the ball make its way past the outstretched frame of Chicago goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc and to the far post, where it was nodded home by Beverly Yanez. The home side pulled level mere moments later, as Vanessa DiBernardo’s delicate header found its way through to Press and the 26-year-old made it 1-1 with a clinical ďŹ nish past Reign netminder Hope Solo. Energized by the equalizer, the Red Stars kept pushing and took the lead in the 32nd minute. Press got in behind the Seattle defense once more – this time on an exquisite long pass by defender Taryn Hemmings – and the striker’s low centering ball picked out Hoy at the doorstep for a simple tap-in. The lead was not to last, however, as another Rapinoe corner in the 39th minute saw the ball cleared back out to the midďŹ elder, whose cross in from the right was converted via close-range header

by Kendall Fletcher. Chicago’s Press continued her dominance after the interval. In the 50th minute, she set up a wide open Hemmings in the area, only to see the Colorado native’s low shot comfortably saved by a well-positioned Solo. Three minutes later, Red Stars captain Lori Chalupny released Press one-on-one with the Reign goalkeeper, who used all of her experience and class to defy her national teammate’s attempted fake-out and deny the opportunity. Seattle nearly punished the home side for the missed chances when Karina LeBlanc parried Kim Little’s 63rd-minute stinger wide of the frame for a stunning save. Ten minutes later, the spotlight was back on Reign shot-stopper Solo, who did an excellent job of tipping DiBernardo’s powerful drive around the post. Just when it seemed the Red Stars might have to settle for a draw in their home opener, Press produced a ďŹ nal piece of brilliance to send the home fans into ecstasy. The California native shocked the opposition backline by sprinting on to a bouncing ball and conďŹ dently slotting past Solo for the dramatic stoppage-time winner. The Chicago Red Stars hope to make it consecutive wins to start the season when they host superstar Alex Morgan and Portland Thorns FC on April 25. so I’m happy with the way we bounced back after being 0-2.” Loehman picked up a three-inning save in relief of winning pitcher Jackson Fischer in the win against Reed-Custer. Fischer helped his own cause with an RBI against Reed-Custer, and Adam Doll and Matt Alisauskis each had a run and RBI. All three are new starters on varsity and are making more consistent contributions as the season goes on. “There were some early struggles to get the new guys to figure out their roles, but now it’s starting to click,” Cocks said. Cocks said Fischer has been solid on the mound all season and his bat is starting to come around, while Doll has been productive in the No. 8 spot in the lineup while playing solid defense in center field. Alisauskis has been a staple batting between leadoff hitter Charlie Donovan and No. 3 batter Joe Donovan. “We needed somebody to step up there, and he has done that,” Cocks said of Alisauskis.

WESTMONT – When Westmont’s baseball team needed a boost, Austin Loehman provided it. After they had lost two of their previous three games, the senior pitched the Sentinels to an 8-5 win against Coal City on April 14 in an Interstate Eight Conference game. Loehman tossed a complete game against the Coalers, and Westmont followed that up with wins against Indian Creek [10-0 on April 15] and I-8 foe Reed-Custer [7-2 on Friday]. “The first game against Coal City [on April 13] we did not execute defensively and we weren’t strong on the mound,” Westmont head coach DJ Cocks said. “We managed to get three runs off their ace, but our pitching and defense let us down. “The next day, Austin Loehman pitched a great game for us and our offense turned out for us.” The rebound win against Coal City and the victory against Reed-Custer were especially key after Westmont [12-4 overall and 2-2 in the I-8 heading into play April 20] dropped its first two conference games, including an 18-3 loss against Manteno in blustery conditions. “It was a bit of a rough start, but the biggest thing is we played maybe the toughest part of our conference schedule at the start and we’re 2-2,” Cocks said. “We could be 0-4,

Jones helps deliver series sweep for DGS By MATT LE CREN
Game breakdown
editorial@mysuburbanlife.com VILLA PARK – Neither cold weather nor a last-minute change of venue prevented Downers Grove South pitcher Zack Jones from getting the job done Monday. The junior left-hander scattered six hits and no walks while striking out eight in a complete-game 4-3 victory against Willowbrook. The effort by Jones allowed the Mustangs, who were originally slated to host the game before field conditions necessitated the switch to Willowbrook, to extend their winning streak to 10 games and sweep the Warriors three straight, all on the road, in a West Suburban Gold series. “I was kind of nervous coming out in the cold and not having [been able] to warm up after we switched fields, but after the first inning I thought I was more confident,” Jones said. “I feel like the main thing we did to continue the sweep and finish it was our offense and low errors in the field. “Obviously, the pitching was good over the three games, but I think the main thing is

DGS now has won 24 consecu-
tive league games dating back to May 6, 2013, when Willowbrook beat them 1-0. “I think we just get a little bit more excited to keep the streak moving on from past years,” Jones said. “That’s the main thing.”
Willowbrook took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth as Jones gave up two runs on three singles and his own throwing error, but he got Cam Murer to line into an inning-ending double play. The Mustangs tied the game
in their half of the fourth on a run-scoring triple by Ryan Taylor, took the lead in the fifth when Joe Engel singled, stole second and scored on a throwing error, and made it 4-2 on Jack Villa’s pinch-hit single in the sixth. Jones recorded five strikeouts in the final two innings. He gave up a two-out RBI single to Cam Ligocki in the seventh but retired the next hitter on a fly to right to cap the Mustangs’ seventh complete game in their last nine starts. Downers South allowed just seven runs in the series against Willowbrook. “It was just a well-pitched game,” Downers South coach Darren Orel said. “Our pitching through this little stretch has been so good.”
Downers Grove lacrosse Road-tested Mustangs showing promise hosts Youth Night game By ALEX SOULIER

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove lacrosse team will host its second annual Youth Night game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Downers Grove South High School stadium, 1436 Norfolk St. The Downers Grove lacrosse program features combined teams with students from both Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South high schools. Downers Grove lacrosse has three teams, including freshman/sophomore, JV and varsity. This year’s Downers Grove Lacrosse Youth Night will be held when the varsity team squares off against Montini at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

DOWNERS GROVE – The Mustangs have proven to be road warriors in the first half of the girls soccer season. Downers Grove South (53-1), which has not played a home game since a 4-1 victory against Lane Tech on March 25, has logged a lot of miles in the month of April, beginning with a 8-0 road win against conference opponent Addison Trail on April 7. “It’s been a long month, but the girls have handled it well and it has brought the team closer together,” DGS head coach Chris Hernandez said. “We have played some tough competition and we have been in nearly every game.” Ava Porlier and Autumn Rasmussen each netted a pair in the West Suburban Gold
opener against AT, and Hannah Rossi, Meghan Riordan, Lexi Dimovski and freshman Vaiva Markevicius added tallies as well. The Mustangs then dropped a pair of games at the always competitive Quad City Invite in Betterndorf, Iowa. The 1-0 loss to Ames High School on April 10 marked the Mustangs’ first defeat of the spring. In the second game, DGS took national power Dubuque-Hempstead into double overtime and then to penalty kicks before Dubuque won in the ninth round of PK’s to seal a 4-3 win. Riordan, Dimovski and Rasmussen scored goals for the Mustangs. “Playing elite teams like those we faced at the Quad City Invite makes you that much better and shows you what it takes to compete with those programs,” Hernandez said.
After returning to the area, the Mustangs went on the road April 14 and defeated Bartlett thanks to goals from Miyax Leon, Dimovski and Rasmussen, who is leading the team in scoring with eight goals and seven assists in nine games. “We have a lot of skilled players and standout athletes on this team,” Hernandez said. “But it’s no one person, it’s the collective unit of seniors that have picked this group up and demonstrated tremendous leadership this season.” Following a road loss to Batavia on Thursday, the Downers Grove South girls soccer team returned home for a conference game against Hinsdale South on Tuesday. The Mustangs will compete in the Naperville North invite this weekend, beginning with a game against Palatine on Thursday.
Benet retires jersey of Wisconsin standout lete,” Marth said. “He has remained true to the to his Benet roots.” Lisle Mayor Joe Broda also partook in the ceremonies, declaring April 16 Frank Kaminsky Day in the village. The local recognition is just one of the many honors bestowed upon Kaminsky in the past two months, including 2015 John P. Wooden Award, 2015 Naismith and Oscar Robertson trophies; 2015 Big Ten Player of the Year; and the 2015 AP, Sporting News, Coaches’ Association and USA Today player of the year awards. His expanding trophy case is a testament to how far he has come as a basketball player. After barely playing in his first two seasons at Wisconsin, the Badgers’ center averaged 13.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per game as a junior, helping the team advance to the Final Four. For an encore in his senior year, Kaminsky led the team with 18.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per game as Wisconsin advanced to the National Championship game where the fell to Duke. But even after the fame and fortune – Kaminsky is projected to be a mid-firstround pick at the NBA Draft on June 26 – he attests that being honored by his home town is just as important. “It’s weird to think about,” Kaminsky said of his newfound fame. “But it’s awesome to get this kind of reception here. There’s not much that you can say other than it’s awesome.”
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK ZACK JONES
Downers Grove South Junior | Baseball Why Jones was selected: The lefty junior improved to 4-0 on the season with a complete-game, eight-strikeout performance Monday as the Mustangs defeated Willowbrook 4-3. The inclement weather Monday couldn’t keep Mustangs junior starter Zack Jones from notching his fourth victory of the season. The southpaw pitched a complete game, spreading three runs over seven innings of work while striking out five batters. Jones, the Sears Hardware & Appliance Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life Sports Editor Alex Soulier about his fourth victory and the Mustangs’ unbeaten conference record.
Soulier: How does it feel to complete the three-game sweep of Willowbrook and improve your conference record to 6-0? Jones: It feels really good to
team baseball the whole series, and today my teammates were able to give me some run support and I was able to back it up on the mound.
Soulier: It was cold and rainy today and the fields were switched a few hours before first pitch. Was your preparation at all affected? Jones: I was a little nervous
about the conditions at the start of the game and I didn’t have as much time as usual to warm up, but once I went out there and got out of the first inning I felt pretty comfortable.
Soulier: You are now 4-0 this season as a starter. What do you have to do to keep your hot streak going? Jones: I just need to stay

LISLE – Frank Kaminsky is revered by Lisle residents for his larger-than-life presence both on and off the basketball court. A week and a half after leading the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team to its first National Championship game in 74 years, the 7-footer returned home Thursday for Frank Kaminsky Day and a jersey retirement ceremony at his high school alma mater, Benet Academy. In front of a packed gym of friends, family, students, teachers and local officials, the 22-year-old Kaminsky took the stage, accepting a framed Benet No. 44 jersey and taking the opportunity to share a personal message of perseverance. “People who are great are the people who are good at failing,” he said to the crowd. “I’m proud to say that I’m one of the best failures of all time.” Kaminsky, who was seldom recruited as a high school basketball player, recalled one of his first practices as a freshman on the University of Wisconsin team. Frustrated by his performance, he approached Badgers’ coach Bo Ryan. “He looked me in the eye and said, ‘Get out of my gym,’” Kaminsky said. “He said, ‘Get out of my gym and walk back in with a smile on your face because that’s how you’re going to attack every single day.’” The pep talk gave Kaminsky a new perspective on basketball, academics and life. “You’ve got to have a smile
on your face. You’ve got to be excited to do things,” Kaminsky said. “And that’s how I attacked every single day at Frank Kaminsky Wisconsin.” Those who know Kaminsky remember him in a similar light. Corky Fennell was his kindergarten teacher when Kaminsky was at Lisle’s St. Joan of Arc School. Not only was he the size of most third-graders, but he was always one of the most outgoing and personable children in class. “Even as a 5-year-old, he was a very bubbly and animated child,” Fennell said. “Watching him in the tournament the past two years was kind of emotional for me because I still see him as a little boy with perfect form knocking down shots from the free-throw line. “I think the exposure he’s received is really amazing because the nation has now gotten to know the kind, funny, outgoing person he truly is.” During Thursday’s hourlong ceremony, Benet Principal Steve Marth, boys basketball coach Gene Heidkamp and Athletic Director Gary Goforth were among those who lauded Kaminsky’s accomplishments. “We gather this afternoon to celebrate the fine gentleman that Frank has become, the values that he has embodied both on and off the court and the admirable way in which he has comported himself as a student-ath-
