By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – Community Unit School District 201 is looking at ways to move forward with facility upgrades after a $19.7 million referendum to do so was defeated earlier this month. The Board of Education planned to meet Tuesday to discuss the matter. Steve Cashman of architecture firm Cashman Stahler Group was scheduled to make a presentation to the board, according to Superintendent Kevin Carey. Carey said the meeting was scheduled for presentation purposes only, and no action would be taken. The board wanted to look at securing doors and new visitor entrances districtwide, as well as enclosing classrooms at Westmont High School, Carey said. Board members hope to find a way to proceed with the changes

He said the project is still a couple months out from the bid process. Board President Marie Charlton said the district is “laser focused” on improving safety measures and learning environments. But the most important part, she said, will be finding a fiscally responsible way to proceed. “The referendum failed, so we are aware the community does not want a referendum,” she said.

The referendum for facility improvements was defeated by 65.9 percent of the votes in the April 7 election. That was the third time in 13 months the district had put a facilities referendum to a vote. The first referendum in March 2014 was voted down by 78 percent of voters. The second in November was rejected by 56 percent. Charlton said the project will need to be scaled back. The first referendum was worth $24.4 million, and the amount increased slightly to $26.4 million for the second. The proposed changes included installing shatter-resistant safety glass on first-floor doors and windows, construction of walls and doors at the high school and Westmont Junior High, and rebuilding entrances to Manning and Miller elementary schools. The board was expected to identify priorities and a plan to proceed Tuesday.

CORRECTIONS • In the April 22 issue of Suburban Life, Westmont Public Library Director Julia Coen was misquoted in a story about Earth Month activities. She said, “It’s always important for us to educate our residents and put on programs our residents think are important and need to deal with.” • In a story in the April 22 issue of Suburban Life about DuPage County’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the date of the news conference when the initiative was announced was misstated. It took place April 14. Suburban Life regrets these errors.

Q: What gets a cavity started? A: What starts a cavity is the repetition of a process that occurs in your mouth when sugars from the food and drink you consume interact with bacteria that live in the plaque on your teeth. That interaction produces acid, which begins a process called demineralization, the loss of calcium and phosphate from the tooth’s enamel. It usually starts in a spot not readily noticeable, like in a fissure. Eventually, over months and months, the affected patch of enamel collapses, leaving a hole, or cavity. Left untreated, the cavity will spread into the dentin, the softer, more sensitive part of the tooth under the enamel. If the excruciating pain hasn’t driven you to the dentist first, decay will eventually destroy the tooth.

One of the keys to preventing decay is the removal of plaque. Plaque is the filmy substance that’s on the teeth. The more it is allowed to build up, the greater the danger of decay. Brushing and flossing is so important because they are the most effective ways of eliminating plaque. Keeping sugar out of your diet is another key. Talk with your dentist about ways to cut down your risk of tooth decay.

It is one of 10 Taiwanese culture centers in the country. “We’ve been trying to push to get the word out to get people to come out and eat,” she said. WESTMONT – A taste of Taiwan will be coming May 9 to Westmont with the third annual Children’s Fun Festival. The event is hosted by the Chicago Taiwanese Cuisine and Culture Association at the Culture Center of Taipei Economic Culture Office, 55 E. 63rd St. in Westmont. Event organizer Meilie Tsai, who teaches at the center, said the festival is intended to increase awareness about Taiwan’s culture and lifestyle. “No one knows Taiwan. It’s a beautiful country,” she said. The event started three years ago after Tsai talked to her students about ways to improve awareness in the community. She feels their efforts are working. In the first year, 600 people attended the event. Last year, it drew 1,000. Tsai is hoping for an even bigger crowd this year. “The purpose is we like to bring more American people here for Taiwanese cuisine,” she said. The event will run from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the culture office and will feature Taiwanese cuisine and games from Taiwan for children. The games will cost $1 or $2 to play, depending on the game. Food and snacks will be available in exchange for food tickets. A set of 10 food tickets will cost $10. Hung Wen Hardage, a student at the

How to use video effectively for local marketing SPONSORED BY

By J.Tom Shaw Video is a powerful marketing tool for small business. Thanks to high speed Internet, YouTube and Facebook, and the rise of mobile prevalence, more videos are viewed online than ever before. In the past, using video to reach an audience was an expensive proposition for many small businesses. Production costs and pricy broadcast advertising schedules were too expensive to run with adequate frequency. Fast-forward to today, and any business with a marketing plan can incorporate video affordably and effectively. Below are a few tips for how you can use video to drive traffic and grow your business: Video is an excellent component to a business website. When a potential customer is searching your website, offer a relevant, high quality video segment. Content can include benefits of your product or service, interviews with you or your team. Best of all, testimonials from actual satisfied customers can be just as effective as word of mouth advertising. Video is an effective way to improve

Search Engine Optimization (SEO). YouTube has dominated the video view field for several years now. Owned by Google, YouTube videos receive favorable search result status in Google searches. Your business can host your videos on YouTube, and link back to your website. You can also display the video on your website using a YouTube widget. In both cases, that linking will improve your chances of getting found by people searching for your product or service. Video rocks on social media. Facebook allows videos to auto play in the news feed. Experts have noted that video can outperform organic reach over text and photo content on Facebook. Social media video for business should be friendly, fun, and informal. Show you and your employees active in the community, having fun with customers, or demonstrating some helpful tips. For examples of these and many other videos, please visit www.ShawMediaDigital. com/video.

Celebrity Dance Studio sends competitors to Milwaukee! SPONSORED BY By Denise Freese

If you’re one of the many viewers tuning in to “Dancing With The Stars”, then you know all about DanceSport. According to www.worlddancesport.org , DanceSport is the activity that combines sport and dance, and that allows the participants to improve physical fitness and mental well-being, to form social relationships, and to obtain results in competition at all levels. Celebrity Dance Studio, in Downers Grove, offers classes for people of any age, and any fitness level, who are interested in learning ballroom dancing techniques. Although the majority of their students come to the studio for social dancing, a small percentage of students take their dancing to a higher level by competing for scholarships and other prizes. Competitions take place all over the country, year-round. Benefits of competing include building strength and confidence, meeting new friends in the Competitive Dance community, and

working hard to achieve a goal. Later this month, Celebrity Dance Studio will send five instructors and more than 15 students to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to compete in the Wisconsin State DanceSport Competition (WSDC). This competition is the 3rd top Ballroom Dance Competition in the country. Celebrity Dance Studio has competed at WSDC for many years, and has won numerous awards including “Top Studio” and “Top Teacher”. The competition takes place April 2226, 2015 at the Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee. In addition to dancing in or being a spectator at the many competitions, participants can browse among vendors to learn about hairstyling and makeup options, dance gown offerings, massage therapy, and many other topics. Classes are also offered, some at no charge. Prizes and scholarships are awarded to the top winners in each of the dance categories. RAIN BARREL SALE

NOW THROUGH MAY 13, 2015 The Village of Downers Grove and The Conservation Foundation are teaming up to offer rain barrels for sale. Orders will be accepted through May 13, 2015. Rain barrels are large containers that capture rainwater at the end of a downspout and store the water for later use, for example in watering plants or washing cars. Using water from rain barrels lowers water bills, helps reduce flooding, and can have a dramatic impact on water quality in our rivers and streams. The 55-gallon barrels are made from reused plastic and come equipped with a spigot, a screw off lid, a garden hose threaded overflow, and screen in the top to help keep out bugs and debris. To Place An Order • All orders will be handled by third party vendor, Upcycle Products. • Place your order online (link available at www.downers.us), and pay via credit card. • The cost per barrel is $60.00, plus sales tax. • For questions about the sale, contact Dan Carlsen at 630-434-6811. • Rain barrels will be distributed at the Public Works Open House: Friday, May, 15, 2015, 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Public Works Facility, 5101 Walnut Ave

FREE WOODCHIPS The Village has free woodchips available at a fenced pickup site located on the north side of Curtiss Street at the intersection of Katrine Street. The site is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., seven days a week. Residents are welcome to take the amounts they need using their own transport. Delivery is not available. Mulch, such as woodchips, can be applied any time of year. The size of the area to be mulched should be as large as practical with the mulch not more than 4 inches deep and not up against the tree trunk when mulching around trees.

Stormwater Utility Incentive As part of the stormwater utility, the Village has an incentive program to encourage residents to install rain barrels on their property. Qualifying properties will be provided a one-time reduction of $25 per property, to be applied toward the stormwater utility portion of a customer's utility bill. Incentive applications are available online at www.downers.us and at Village Hall and Public Works facilities. Village Council meetings are held the first, second, and third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Hall Council Chambers at 801 Burlington Avenue. president, he must be fired.” The union represents the college’s 306 full-time faculty members and is a local bargaining unit of the Illinois Education Association, according to the association’s website. Glenn Hanson, the president of the association, said Monday he hoped the resolution would finally get through to the board of trustees, especially in light of the new board members being sworn in today.

He said suspending Breuder with pay would be in line with what would happen with other employees. “We are very concerned at this point in time,” he said. “There’s a misconception about what has been happening at the college ... these things are happening at a very high level at the college, not with what is happening with students in the classroom or anything.”

Illustrator Larry Day (left) and author Miriam Busch (right) talk recently at Westmont High School about how they work together to create a story.

Westmont High School was in the state spotlight recently as the kickoff location for the Illinois Reads: A Reading State of Mind initiative. Secretary of State Jesse White and 22 authors took part in the event. Other school districts will get to host the kickoff in future years, but Westmont will always be the first! Is it any surprise at this point that there’s more bad news coming out of the College of DuPage? Now the U.S. Attorney’s Office has issued three subpoenas for documents, video and audio. A subpoena is far from proof of an actual malfeasance, but if there has been any going on, we hope this will shed some light.

To the individual who stated, “School should never be used as a free baby-sitting service, your statement, “One should never need two incomes to support a family. First of all, the vast majority of households in the U.S. are two-income households (59.1 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics), so you are condemning most of the families in the United States. You have no right to make such a statement based on the financial needs of others. Second, many women work because they choose to work and obtain fulfillment from having both a career and a family. And who are you to judge that women cannot have both a career and a family?

to adopt, but you people such as yourselves turn us down because we work. If you don’t like volunteering, then why don’t you quit because it sounds like you don’t enjoy what you do. So do us a favor and don’t be there when we come in to adopt.

Would you be surprised?

Stop marijuana arrests in DuPage

Stop the interruptions on TV

I don’t understand why the TV reporters and the weather reporters always have to interrupt the program when they can wait until 4 o’clock at the news that is not that important. Then they break in, you have 10, 40 commercials, then they break in again, then they have 20, 30 commercials and you miss your program, you miss other things on the television. Channel 7 is the worst of them all. They have to interrupt every five minutes to bring something that they keep on talking about over and over and over again.

I wish that the DuPage law enforcement agencies would stop arresting people for marijuana possession, especially when the people they are arresting are older than 21 years old. It’s frustrating to see it in the newspaper and online that people are being arrested for this drug that is not harming anyone and is now legal in four states in the country. I’m sure the law enforcement agencies in DuPage could use their resources to fight real crime in this county.

Full-day kindergarten isn’t about baby-sitting, it’s extended learning

To the reader opposed to full-day kindergarten – you are right, kindergarten is not free baby-sitting. It is an extended learning opportunity, a socialization tool and an ability to build bonds outside the household. More than 90 percent of Illinois elementary schools have full-day kindergarten. This isn’t about baby-sitting, it’s about rethinking a system to be in line with today’s expectations on education. So before you cast judgment on dual income People with jobs should be families (because that’s what you’re doing, allowed to adopt rescue animals under the guise of a debate about full-day This is in response to the adoption of kindergarten), take a look at the bigger rescue animals. I know some people don’t picture beyond Downers Grove. There is a adopt, they just want to look. But many of whole world out there and I for one would us do want to adopt, but are told we cannot like my children to learn about it – taught adopt because we have jobs. We do want by trained educators, not baby sitters.

Would you be surprised if someone was elected president if one parent was a high-level government official, the other was a Ph.D. and global expert on metalworking, a grandparent was a vice president of a substantial bank, who went to Harvard, held leadership positions, graduated, got a law degree and served in the Senate, would you be surprised? Because that’s our president, Barack Obama.

By Rita Walker Did you know that M-Day was on April 21? That was the day Google decided to wake businesses up to the mobile revolution. Mobile has been growing for years, but the pace is picking up. In 2013, searches done on mobile devices outnumbered searches done on desktop computers. Businesses should have taken notice then (if not before) and made their websites easily viewable on phones and tablets. But, many businesses missed the memo or ignored it. The memo is coming out loud and clear now from a source that should be paid attention to….Google. Google’s “memo” was published on February 26, 2015. It included on April 21, 2015 Google will be implementing algorithm changes that will cause websites that are mobile optimized to be displayed higher in search results. Google’s announcement states, “Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal…Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices. “In lay terms this means that if a business wants it’s website to come up early to people searching on a phone, their website needs to be easy to read on a

phone. This means that a person should not have to zoom in or pinch and pull the screen to read the content. To see if a website is mobile friendly, use a mobile site tester online. There are two ways to have a mobile optimized website. The first is a “bandaid” solution. It is having a separate mobile companion site. It is usually an abbreviated version of the desktop site. It typically has the most commonly viewed information, such as address, hours, and click to call function. The better long term solution is having a responsive design. A responsive website is a site that adjusts the content to be viewable on any size screen. The advantage is having all of the content on a website available to people viewing it on a mobile device. Unless a business wants to see a decline in traffic (and more importantly potential customers) to their website, it is critical to have a mobile friendly website. If Google penalizes a website for not being mobile optimized, it will definitely result in less visits because more than half of searches are taking place on a mobile device and over 90% of people searching do not go past the first page of search results.

100 Women Who Care

Downers Grove Celebrates 3rd Anniversary of philanthropic support to local organizations 100 Woman Who Care Downers Grove (100WWC-DG) will celebrate its 3rd anniversary when its members gather on Wednesday, May 6th, 6:30pm at Emmett’s Restaurant in Downers Grove for their quarterly meeting. Newcomers are welcomed to join us to learn more about 100 WWC - DG. 100WWC – DG is a small but growing group of women who in the past 3 years have donated over $33,000 (in aggregate) to the following charities: Almost Home Kids, Bridge Communities, Family Shelter Services, PADS, J. Kyle Braid Leadership Foundation (DGN), Positively Parenting; PAD (Special project); Ride Janie Ride, SEASPAR (music program); Van Houtan Family (via the Grove Foundation), HGNA, and Abide in Me. 100WWC-DG is modeled after a similarly named group based out of Jackson MI and started by Karen Dunigan as a brilliantly simple way to raise money efficiently and quickly for local charities. The premise is that a group of women gather once a quarter to choose a worthy charity to support and, on the spot, write a check for $100, thus giving the chosen charity an immediate and unexpected gift. Each individual’s check is written directly to the charity chosen and aggregated so that the impact of all the checks is felt. Meetings take less than 30 minutes and there are no requirement for membership, other than to come together once a quarter. Unlike more formal organizations, our group has no annual membership fee, no required committee meetings or other time-consuming efforts associated with fundraising. 100WWC – DG is co-organized by Joanne Walthius and Sharon Sartori. Please check us out at www.100womenwhocaredownersgrove.com for more details and please consider joining the Downers Grove women who already belong to 100 Women Who Care – Downers Grove. We hope to see at our meeting on Wednesday May 6th, 6:30pm at Emmett’s Restaurant.

Several other investigations and criticisms have revolved around spending by Breuder and other administrators. Recently, both the U.S. District Attorney’s Office and DuPage County prosecutors have opened investigations into the college and Breuder’s spending and employment contract, as well as documents regarding college trustee spending, contracts awarded to COD Foundation members and more. Randall Samborn, spokesman from the College of DuPage, offered no comment on the motion. He confirmed the college’s board is scheduled to meet today.

who has been a vocal opponent of the Breuder administration, previously indicated school officials may have destroyed papers or transactions. On April 7, she sent Breuder and Chairwoman Erin Birt a legal hold notice demanding the school introduce a mandatory retention policy for college and foundation documents. When asked about the intent of the April 16 subpoena or whether its issuance could be related to the destruction of records, she issued a statement on the matter. “If he’s done what is suggested here, violating the hold letter I issued is the least of his problems,” she said of Breuder in the statement. Birt did not respond to requests for comment. In recent months, the school has come under fire after the board awarded Breuder a $763,000 buyout. The Faculty Senate has passed a resolution calling for Breuder to be placed on administrative leave until the ongoing investigations are resolved. Trustees are scheduled to meet Thursday, when new board members Deanne Mazzochi, Frank Napolitano and Charles Bernstein, who won the April election running as the Hamilton-backed Clean Slate, will be sworn in.

was released by Chalupny and did well to release a right-footed effort that seemed destined for the back of the net until it was tipped wide by Angerer’s ďŹ ngertips. Instead of celebrating a third Chicago tally, the fans at Benedictine University saw their team’s lead cut in half just before the half-hour mark. Allie Long found Sinclair at the top of the penalty box and the Canada striker hit a low shot that found its way through trafďŹ c and inside the left post for a clinic in precision goal-scoring. Portland nearly leveled the match four minutes from the break, LeBlanc rushing off her line and coming up with a stunning block to deny Sinclair’s toe-poke from close range. Thorns FC ďŹ nally tied things up in the opening stages of the second period, as Shim pounced on a partial clearance by taking a touch at the edge of the box and picking out the inside of the far post with a well-placed left-footed blast. The Red Stars were fortunate not to concede another goal when Sinclair subsequently found Comeau unmarked inside the penalty area and the midďŹ elder send a mishit effort well over the frame. The visitors got even closer to the go-ahead tally in the 74th minute, substitute Kendall Johnson feeding Sinead Farrell, whose excellent chipped attempt bounced off the underside off the crossbar and came within inches of crossing the line. Chicago defender and New Zealand captain Abby Erceg had the game’s ďŹ nal quality chance when she beat several defenders to ball on DiBernardo free-kick from midďŹ eld, only to see the dangerous header parried by Angerer. The Chicago Red Stars look to stay undefeated on the season when they host American legend Christie Rampone and Sky Blue FC on Saturday, May 2. Chicago, Illinois – National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side Chicago Red Stars drew 2-2 in a spirited affair with mighty Portland Thorns FC on Saturday night. Reigning NWSL Player of the Week Christen Press had her second straight twogoal performance to open the 2015 season, but Thorns FC clawed its way back into the game and earned a point courtesy of goals from Christine Sinclair and Mana Shim before halftime. In the early stages of the clash with Portland, Chicago continued right where it had left off in the dramatic 3-2 victory over Seattle the previous week. A mere four minutes into the match, Press took down an excellent long ball by captain Lori Chalupny and cut to her right, followed by a beautiful curler that left outstretched German international goalkeeper Nadine Angerer without a chance. U.S. Women’s National Team star Press was at it again just four minutes later, receiving the ball from midďŹ elder Vanessa DiBernardo and exploding past her marker on the left side of the penalty area. The 26-year-old ďŹ red at goal from a tight angle and was delighted to see her attempt deect off defender Courtney Niemiec and underneath Angerer for the day’s second strike. Portland nearly pulled one back moments later, as Tobin Heath worked her way to the by-line on the right and sent a dangerous cross toward the far past, only to see Red Stars netminder Karina LeBlanc produce a stunning kick-save to deny the unmarked Shim. The rebound fell straight Thorns FC debutant Taylor Comeau, whose effort ricocheted off a defender before being headed off the line by well-positioned Chicago defender Julie Johnston. The Red Stars nearly found the net at the other end in the 15th minute, rookie Danielle Colaprico swinging in a corner kick from the left that was nodded just over the frame by legendary U.S. midďŹ elder Shannon Boxx. Three minutes later, Press thought she had a hat trick when she

Fischer in fine form for Sentinels By JASON ROSSI

Westmont’s Jackson Fischer pitches Friday during a home game against Wilmington. In his first varsity season, Fischer has been a key contributor on the mound and at the plate for the Sentinels.

WESTMONT – It would have been easy for Jackson Fischer to hang his head at times in his start against Wilmington. But that’s not how the junior pitcher for Westmont’s baseball does things. He put some early struggles behind him and helped lead the Sentinels to a 9-6 win against the Wildcats on Friday. “I struggled in the first but I came back good in the later innings,” Fisher said. “I was able to start throwing strikes and the defense really helped me out too.” The defense was an issue early as a pair of errors led to two unearned runs for the Wildcats in a four-run first. That’s when Fischer’s steady demeanor came through. He worked one-two-three innings in the second and fifth, got out of a two-on, two-out jam in the sixth and got the win when the Sentinels scored seven times in their half of the sixth. All told, he struck out seven and yielded three earned runs. “It’s always hard when you’re out there and they’re scoring runs off you, but you have to be able to put it behind you and put your head down because you have a long game ahead of you,” Fischer said. Westmont head coach D.J. Cocks said Fischer was one of the better pitchers on last year’s sophomore team and came to varsity with good command of several pitches, including a mid-80s fastball. In Fischer’s time on varsity, Cocks has seen him make great strides in his attitude on the mound. “That’s something he’s been working on, keeping an even keel,” Cocks said. “You have to. If you don’t, you’re not going to be successful at the varsity level. He’s new to

I’m proud of the way he kept his composure. He did a really good job of that.” Fischer was one of three unearned runs that scored in Westmont’s half of the sixth. In addition to his sharp pitching, he’s also been a steady contributor at the No. 5 spot in the lineup throughout the season. “It seems like he’s on base two times every game, which is huge, and he has a high quality at-bat percentage, which is something we live by in this program,” Cocks said. “His percentage is really high, and batting in that fifth spot there’s a lot of opportunities to knock in runs and get stuff going, and he’s done a fantastic job in the five hole for us.” Wilmington entered Friday’s game undefeated in the Interstate Eight Conference, so the win not only helped Westmont [14-5 overall, 4-3 I-8] gain a quality victory in conference but also upped the team’s level of confidence ahead of games against Seneca on Monday and Tuesday. “Our confidence is real high,” Fischer said. “This team has real good chemistry right now and everything is starting to come together for us.”

MEGAN RAMSDEN

GIRLS SOCCER

Downers Grove North Senior | Softball

Downers Grove North

The Trojans extended their winning streak to five games with victories against York and Morton. On April 21, Downers Grove North (8-3) defeated York 1-0 in a shootout. Following two scoreless halves and a pair of overtime periods, the West Suburban Silver matchup went to PKs, and DGN prevailed 4-3 as goalkeeper Grace Stevenson stymied two York shooters. The Trojans then notched their fifth straight win with a 2-0 shutout against Morton on Thursday. DGN opened the scoring at the 22 minute mark when senior forward Jessica Ridderhoff’s hard shot from a tight angle bounced away from the Mustang keeper to a charging Alexandra Cittadine, who buried the shot inside the far post. Downers Grove North freshman Chloe Nowka converted a penalty shot in the second half, and the girls held on for a shutout victory. It was the Trojan’s fourth game in a row without yielding a goal and their eighth overall shutout of the season. The team faced Lyons Township on Tuesday and next travels to Proviso West for a game at 4:30 Thursday.

Why Ramsden was selected: Megan Ramsden struck out seven batters and yielded five hits and one run during a complete-game effort Monday as the Trojans defeated Glenbard West 2-1. Megan Ramsden brought her best stuff to the pitching circle Monday, powering Downers Grove North softball team to its first conference win of the season. The Trojan ace fanned seven Hilltoppers and went the distance as the girls improved to 1-2 in West Suburban Silver play. Ramsden, the Sears Hardware & Appliance Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life Sports Editor Alex Soulier about the victory.

Soulier: You pitched out of a few tight spots in the first couple innings then got in a groove in the second half of the game. How were you feeling in the pitching circle? Ramsden: I know that my

teammates are there to back me up, so I always have a lot more confidence knowing that if a batter does make contact, someone will make a play in

the field. Today they made some great plays in the field, I was then able to settle down and get some strikeouts and we got the win.

Soulier: What is your biggest strength as a pitcher? Ramsden: I think I am pretty

composed and strong mentally. So whenever something goes wrong, I am able to take a step back, relax and don’t let it get to me because I always know that there is another pitch to throw and it’s not the end of the world.

Soulier: The team is 10-4 through 14 games. Are you satisfied with where you stand? Ramsden: There is always

room to improve, but I think we are playing really well right now. We have a couple good wins against solid competition, and I think that will help us a lot as the season progresses.

NAPERVILLE – Downers Grove South’s girls soccer team was unable to earn a berth in the quarterfinals of the Naperville Invitational, although it wasn’t for lack of trying. After beating Palatine 3-1 on Thursday in the opening game of what is considered the toughest regular-season tournament in Illinois, the Mustangs fell 2-0 against host Naperville Central on Friday night at Memorial Stadium. Naperville Central then beat Palatine on Saturday to win the group, dropping Downers Grove South to the consolation bracket. “We definitely came out flat,” Downers Grove South coach Chris Hernandez said. “Whether it’s fatigue or mental issues, this was a flat performance for us, which is too bad.” The loss came despite a terrific performance from senior goalkeeper Meghan Diddia, who was outstanding and made 13 saves while the Mustangs (7-4-1) were outshot 21-5. Neither Naperville Central goal could be blamed on Diddia. On the first one, she made a diving save on an open shot by Kayla Burke, only to see Kirsten Dorgan score on the rebound with 13:58 left in

the first half. The Redhawks (9-4-1) made it 2-0 at the 31:20 mark of the second half when Meredith Tunney headed home a corner kick from Taylor Stenmark. They could have easily had five or six more goals if not for Diddia. “She’s really been stepping up these last few weeks,” Hernandez said. “We challenge her at practice to improve herself to be a more of a well-rounded goalkeeper and we’re starting to see the effects of that. She’s been outstanding.” Diddia got the win against Palatine, which controlled the majority of the play against the Mustangs. Ava Porlier scored twice on free kicks and Alexa Dimovski tallied off an assist from Meghan Riordan for the Mustangs, who could not sustain that performance against the Redhawks. “I think a lot of us were tired and I just think more of us need to be coming to the ball with more effort,” Diddia said. “All that matters is that we take this loss and we turn it into motivation to do better because I think it is obvious that we can play well.” DGS faced Morton on Tuesday and continues play at the Naperville Invitational against Conant at 5 p.m. Thursday at Fremd High School.

Undefeated Mustangs firing on all cylinders

Downers Grove North’s Emma Varsbergs hustles Monday to first during the Trojans’ game against Glenbard West in Downers Grove.

By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com DARIEN – The pitching has been nearly perfect this season for the Downers Grove South softball team. Behind two of the most dominant hurlers in the area, junior lefty Caroline Hedgcock and sophomore righthander Payton Buresch, the Mustangs are off to a 16-0 start, including a 4-0 record in West Suburban Gold play. “I think we are playing with a lot of confidence this season, but we are trying not to get ahead of ourselves and approach every game with the same intensity and preparation,” Buresch said. “We are playing really well as a team right now, our offense, defense and pitching is all clicking.” The cohesion has led to a handful of dominant performances in the first half of the softball season. The Mustangs have shut out their last four opponents, most recently defeating Hinsdale South 11-0 on Friday. Additionally, the offense has put up 10 or more runs in 11 games this spring, eclipsing the 20-run mark twice and adding one 19-run game for good measure. “We [the pitching staff] are only as good as our defense and offense is,” Hedgcock said. “There’s a tremendous amount of veteran leadership on this team, with Kristin Lea, Kristen Bialek, Rebekah Ondracek, Megan LoBianco, Zahrya McFarland and Nicole Bowman. They’ve been really solid this year in the field and given us a lot of run support.” Hedgcock, a Maryland University recruit, has held up her end of the bargain, too, opening the season with three straight one-hitters before tossing a five-inning perfect game April 13 against Hinsdale Central. Buresch, a James Madison recruit, has yet to lose a game in her high school career, going 15-0 as a freshman and a perfect 7-0 this season. Additionally, Morgan Meyer got her first career varsity win April 22 against Proviso East, fanning out 11 batters and surrendering just one hit as the Mustangs won 16-0 in five innings. “Pitching is definitely our strength,” DGS head coach Ron Havelka said. “Caroline and Payton complement each other very well – Caroline is a lefty and Payton is right-handed and they both have multiple pitches that can finish batters. “But as the season progresses, we are going to face teams that can score

Downers Grove South’s Caroline Hedgcock pitches Friday in an away game against Hinsdale South.

Game breakdown Downers Grove South 11, Hinsdale South 0 DGS LEADERS n Caroline Hedgcock: 5 IP, 1 H, 11 SO n Kristin Lea: 2 for 3, 3 RBIs n Payton Buresch: 3 for 3 on us. It’s inevitable. Our defense and hitting need to be up to the challenge. So far, I’m very happy with our play, we are playing really good team ball.” In Friday’s conference game against Hinsdale South, Lea led the way, going 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs as the Mustangs won 11-0 in five innings. Bialek also went 2 for 3 from the plate while Buresch was 3 for 3 and Hedgcock earned the victory, going the distance and allowing just one hit and striking out 11 batters. DGS faced Addison Trail on Tuesday and will host Willowbrook at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

DOWNERS GROVE – Megan Ramsden gave the Trojans a much-needed boost Monday as the team notched its first West Suburban Silver win of the season. The senior pitcher was lights out against Glenbard West, going the distance and striking out seven batters during a 2-1 Downers Grove North victory. Ramsden’s performance not only got the Trojans in the conference win column, she also helped the team earn a victory as they embark on of the busiest stretches of the schedule. “This is our first of five games in eight days, so it feels good to get that first win,” Ramsden said. “The defense was sensational tonight; it’s a huge confidence boost when you know that your teammates can rob a hit when the ball is put in play. “On my end, I just wanted to come out and set a good tone and pace. They were able to get to me early for a run, but then I settled down and felt really confident from the pitching circle.” The Hilltoppers got on the board first in the top of the second, manufacturing one run on back-to-back singles after a runner reached on a dropped third strike. But the Trojans countered in the bottom half of the inning when Kayelee Newstrom led off with single then swiped second base. Raemon Meents followed suit with a single, advancing Newstrom to third. Newstrom then scored on a double steal in which both runners were ruled safe. Ramsden was electric from the pitching circle in the following three innings, retiring eight of the nine batters she faced and keeping the game tied at one when the Trojans came up to bat in the bottom of the fifth. “Megan was terrific in the middle

Game breakdown Downers Grove North 2, Glenbard West 1 DGN LEADER n Megan Ramsden: 6 IP, R, 5 H, 7 SO half of the game” Downers Grove North head coach Eric Landschoot said. “That’s why she is one of the leaders of this team. She’s a senior and she’s been in this situation before. She went out there and led by example and it was nice to see the offense pick her up late in the game.” Emma Varsbergs began the bottom of the fifth with a single and advanced to third when shortstop Jaclyn Pasakarnis roped a one-out double. A Newstrom sacrifice fly then drove in Varsbergs for the go-ahead run. After retiring the side in order in the top of the sixth, Ramsden came out to close the game in the seventh. Although the leadoff batter reached on a single, Ramsden recorded the next three outs in succession to wrap up the win. “Credit the Glenbard West pitcher and defense, they really limited us on offense today,” Landschoot said. “But Megan was up to the challenge. It was a quality win for both her and the team. “This was an important victory because it was our first conference win and it gets us off on the right foot before a hectic part of the schedule.” The Trojans faced Benet Academy on Tuesday and continue West Suburban Silver play against Hinsdale Central at 4:30 today. The girls face Glenbard East tomorrow and have the weekend off before three straight games against conference opponents begins with a Monday matchup at Proviso West.
