WESTMONT – The Westmont Park District is in a tough spot after three state grants totaling $3.2 million were put on hold. All park development grants were suspended by Gov. Bruce Rauner earlier this year because of state budget evaluations. Westmont Mayor and Park District Director Ron Gunter said the biggest hit the Park District is taking is the loss of a Park and Recreational Facility Construction grant awarded in October 2014.

MOUTH RINSES Q: Do mouth rinses really have any value in dental hygiene? How should they be used? A: An oral rinse is no substitute for regular brushing and flossing, but it certainly should have a place in your home oral care regimen. In fact, while the feeling of a fresh mouth and breath is good, one danger of using an over-the-counter mouth rinse is that the fresh feeling it creates may cover up an unpleasant taste or odor that is the first tell-tale sign of a problem like gum disease. A number of mouth rinses have been recognized by the ADA as effective in helping prevent a build-up of plaque above the gum line when used as directed. Many have been awarded the American Dental Association Seal of Approval. If you are a regular mouth rinse user, dentists suggest that you brush and floss immediately before rinsing. A mouth rinse is most effective on clean teeth. There are also prescription mouth rinses that are effective for dealing with specific types of problems. Because children tend to accidentally swallow mouth rinse, they should use it only under adult supervision. Check with your dentist to make sure you’re using your mouth rinse properly.

WESTMONT – The Westmont Fire Department is starting to look like a family business, thanks to a father and two of his children who work at the department. Patriarch Dan Sullivan has been a part-time firefighter for 30 years. He’s joined at the department by his son, Brendan, and daughter, Shannon. Dan said having that many members of the same family working for the department is interesting, but having two relatives at the same department isn’t rare. “Fire service is generational,” he said. “It’s not unusual to have fathers and sons who’ve shared a department.” Dan, who works full time as a hospital chaplain, said he has a passion for firefighting. “I think had I not pursued college and theology schools and others, I would have pursued firefighting,” he said. Now, he’s nearing retirement from the department but still works 12-hour evening shifts from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., often going right to his hospital job afterward. “That’s part of the reason why I’m

firefighting was his passion in high school. He said going to the department when he was younger led him to take an introduction to fire service class.

Ask Dr. Webster
A potential Westmont Park District community center is off the table after the state suspended park grants earlier this year.
SEALANTS Q: What is a sealant? A: A sealant is a plastic material a dentist applies to the chewing surfaces of the permanent back teeth – the molars – to prevent cavities. Those teeth, which are designed for crushing and chewing, have an uneven terrain full of pits and fissures. They’re good for what they do, but are susceptible to cavities. In a painless procedure, the dentist will thoroughly dry the teeth, then apply a layer of acid liquid that will etch the teeth’s surfaces slightly. Over that he will apply the liquid plastic that will seep into the depressions of the teeth and harden. The protective coating keeps out the plaque and acid that cause decay. Sealants are used most effectively with children who have newly formed permanent teeth. A person who has not developed cavities in the pits and fissures of molars by his or her late teens or early 20s is not likely to get them later. The American Dental Association says sealants are virtually 100 percent effective in preventing tooth decay where they are applied. Considering the cost of filling and repairing decayed teeth, an investment in sealants is also economical. Nevertheless, as effective as they are, sealants are no substitute for regular visits to the dentist for twice-a-year cleaning and examination. Talk with your dentist about the value of a sealant.

Continued from page 2 “We don’t have any desire to do that,” he said. “We’re going to live within the means we have and the building is not within those means.” Diane Main, president of the district’s Board of Commissioners, isn’t giving up hope the state may allow the grants. “I don’t think it’s dead in the water yet. I think there’s a lot of hope out there,” she said. “I’m trying to be optimistic that it’s not a dead issue.” Main, who is also chairwoman of the Illinois Association of Park Districts, said there has been bipartisan support from state legislators to get funding back to park districts. She said she had never seen the Park District as excited as it was when the construction grant was awarded. “It was like a dream come true for
us,” she said. The Park District also applied for a $2.5 million construction grant for the center in 2009, but didn’t get it. The second grant the Park District could possibly miss out on is an Open Space Land Acquisition and Development grant for $400,000, Gunter said, to develop a 5-acre parcel of land at East 57th Street and Wilmette Avenue that the Park District bought three years ago. Gunter said the district planned to combine the property with a 2-acre parcel owned by the village to create a larger park that could be developed with trails. This project is the most likely to move forward without grant funding, but its timeline would have to be slowed down significantly. “I would say for us to do that project, it’s going to take a while,” Gunter said, estimating five to 10 years for completion. This is the grant for which Main is most hopeful. Land acquisition grants

have been distributed by the state since 1987, she said, and if Illinois borrows money from the fund where those grants come, it must be repaid within a year. “I’m very hopeful that at least the OSLAD grants go through, but I really don’t know,” she said. The third grant, an Illinois Green Infrastructure Grant worth $330,000, would be used to install environmentally friendly permeable pavers in the west parking lot at Ty Warner Park. Gunter said if that grant doesn’t come through, the district would use asphalt. “The parking lot we would just go ahead and pave it,” he said. Main said in the past 18 years, Westmont has received $3.2 million for park improvement. That’s the same amount as the total of the three grants Westmont could miss out on in 2015. “It’s very unfortunate this is happening because all park districts in the area use these grants to make progress and make our parks better,” she said.

Celebrate Earth Day at Westmont library State senators seeing signs OUR VIEW
Each year, Earth Day honors the anniversary of what is considered the birth of the modern environmental movement which began in 1970. Appreciating nature and working to protect the Earth are concepts that fit well with the library’s goal to be environmentally responsible. The first Earth Day led COMMUNITY to the creation of the U.S. VOICE Environmental Protection Gail Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, Graziani and Endangered Species acts. Earth Day is celebrated April 22 and has grown in Earth Day is a good time popularity to become Earth to make a commitment Week. to learning more about This year, a variety of Earth Day activities in Westthe environment and how mont are scheduled into May. To commemorate the day, you can help to protect it. stop by the library lobby April 22 to pick up a free packet of seeds to jump start your garden and view the rain barrel display. Earth Day is a good time to make a commitment to learning more about the environment and how you can help to protect it. The library has a variety of resources available for residents to read up on issues such as pollution, endangered species, water shortages, recycling or climate change. The possibilities are endless. The Westmont Public Library and the Westmont Environmental Improvement Commission are sponsoring two programs at the library presented by School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education. Residents can learn How to Save Money with Energy Efficiency on May 2 and more about Water Conservation for the Future on May 16. Other Earth Day-inspired events are taking place throughout Westmont so check the village website for more details. The library is committed to ongoing efforts to protect our environment year-round. Look for programs on native plants and Beekeeping 101 at the library this summer. For details, watch for our library newsletter, The Explorer, in your mailbox in May or visit our website at westmontlibrary.org.

of hope in Springfield
To hear state Sens. Michael Connelly and Chris Nybo describe it, there’s a new mood in Springfield. Connelly and Nybo, who between them represent most of DuPage County in the Illinois Legislature, stopped by the Suburban Life newsroom the other day to chat about what’s going on in Springfield and their priorities for the immediate future. One of the things that stood out during the discussion was their assertion that there’s an entirely new atmosphere at the state capitol. To some degree that’s to be expected whenever there’s a change in the governor’s office – was anyone sorry to see Rod Blagojevich depart, regardless of who replaced him? – but what Connelly and Nybo described was an environment where true bipartisanship has a chance to thrive. Imagine that, in Springfield of all places. Connelly and Nybo described how Gov. Bruce Rauner has made it a habit to share meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner – with legislators of both parties, on a regular basis. Connelly mentioned he has access to the governor via text message (one imagines that’s a privilege that would be quickly revoked if it was abused) and said that’s common now, and a far cry from his previous lack of access. You don’t have to think back very far to remember dissension not only between
the parties, but within the parties in Springfield. Conflict between then-Gov. Pat Quinn and House Speaker Michael Madigan led to the watered-down pension reform law that seems likely to meet its demise in the courts. With Republicans reduced to a superminority and needing only Democratic votes to pass legislation and a Democratic governor in office, it was still excruciatingly difficult for meaningful bills to get passed. A cynic might see Rauner’s overtures and dismiss it as mere window-dressing designed to elicit responses like this very editorial. But that would be a great length to go to just to fool some newspaper editors. Plus, the recent bipartisan effort to close a $1.6 billion gap in the 2015 budget, keeping state services and programs from shutting down, certainly showed a willingness of the two parties to work together, no matter how you feel about the deal itself. It’s no surprise Connelly and Nybo, both Republicans, feel a sense of optimism now that their party controls one of the branches of state government. But the available evidence, so far, seems to support their assertion that there really is a difference in the way things are being done now. We can only hope this will continue, with the 2016 budget on the horizon and a likely need for another stab at pension reform. From here, the issues only get more difficult to tackle.

College of dysfunction?
Who is watching out for students, faculty and staff at the College of DuPage? Kathy Hamilton appears to be the only board member that cares! Now we have yet another scandal. It appears as though the Foundation Board that is supposed to be raising private funding for the college is only raising the funding for their own pockets. … Talk about a conflict of interest! This is all from the president on down to the radio station and the board members – power gone bad!
Woodridge parking problem
The post office in Woodridge needs more parking. On any given day, the employees are parked in the front area closest to the door and people have to carry their packages far because the employees are taking up the parking. I realize they don’t have enough parking; they need to add more parking. … Next to the post office is the police station parking. They need to add a few spots there so the [post office] employees have somewhere to park so customers have somewhere closer to park.

By Gina Kraman We do it for airline seats, cell phone plans, and dishwashers. Why not for something as important as hearing? Upgrades move us up -- replacing the old with a newer version, which usually means better. Upgraded hearing aids help patients take advantage of new technological developments, with more features to enhance hearing. Hearing aids last between three to seven years, depending on use, care, and instrument quality. When wearers are ready for a new pair, or their old pair is not fixable, updated models are available. Sometimes patients opt to upgrade their hearing aids even when they’re working well, to take advantage of new enhancements. For example, in the past two years, hearing aid technology has advanced to help listeners better distinguish conversation from background noises. For some, this feature alone would merit a new pair, as conversations in crowded places would be enhanced.
as with a new job with more conference calls and meetings, better hearing aids may be necessary. Some “ear-to-ear” hearing aids even communicate with each other, to adjust automatically for difficult listening environments. Newer models are made to integrate with wireless technology devices, such as smart phones. Audio from phones or other devices can be streamed directly through the hearing aids. Upgraded hearing aids may compensate for hearing loss that has substantially declined after the original hearing aids were purchased. While audiologists can make device adjustments, sometimes the best solution is a new pair. However, for patients on a budget, replacing a pair of working hearing aids – which may cost hundreds of dollars – may not be an option. Audiologists strive to work with patients, their goals, and budgets to find satisfactory solutions.

Connelly, Nybo talk state budget, College of DuPage Senators also discuss legislative priorities during visit to Suburban Life By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Though last week was all about the lead up to Tuesday’s municipal elections, a number of statewide issues continue to circle over the collective heads of local voters. State Sens. Michael Connelly, R-Lisle, and Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, visited Suburban Life Media’s office in Downers Grove on Friday to discuss their legislative priorities, the state budget and the College of DuPage.
Rauner budget proposal
One of the biggest questions in the state is its budget. A major part of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s election platform involved making tough decisions to financially stabilize Illinois. Now, the legislature, municipalities, school districts, nonprofits and other organizations that get a piece of the state pie are voicing support and concern over potential cutbacks.
Connelly said he stood behind the governor’s efforts to rein in spending, even when they came with sacrifice. “To this governor, it’s been 12 years of mismanagement, 12 years Michael of ‘let’s borrow here’ – Connelly it’s a big shell game in Springfield,” he said. “This is a governor from the private sector who demands results and there’s going to be no more shenanigans.” Nybo said he was Chris Nybo hopeful state Democrats and Republicans could come together for a final fiscal year 2016 budget by May 31, the deadline for a deal. He said the process was only at a starting point, but added with Rauner in office, Democratic leadership would have to consider a bipartisan solution. “They have no choice – to get a budget implemented, they have to have a Republican governor eventually sign off on something,” he said. The cuts from last year’s budget likely won’t make this year’s any easier, Nybo said, adding it would take an effort across Illinois to make a stable state.
Connelly said the governor hopes to push several bills on workers compensation, spending guidelines and more to free up finances for strapped municipalities and organizations to offset the cuts.
Education funding, Senate Bill 1
Education has remained untouched in Rauner’s proposed budget, which includes a $25 million increase in the Early Childhood Block Grant. But suburban schools may still take a huge hit in state funding under Senate Bill 1. Numbers haven’t fully emerged on the bill – Nybo said he only got information for his district Thursday – but it is similar to 2014’s controversial Senate Bill 16. The previous bill, which died without a vote, would have reallocated funds from property-rich districts to poorer ones statewide, causing many suburban districts to lose millions. Senate Bill 1 has a similar formula, Nybo said, and schools in his district would still lose out on $40 million in the coming years. Connelly said he hopes for a more in-depth look at the school funding problem, particularly the disparity between Chicago schools and the rest of the state. “People want kids in Chicago, in
Naperville, Edwardsville, Carbondale to receive a great public education, but they also want fairness and equity when it comes to the financing of it,” he said.
Future of the College of DuPage
The senators also addressed another education issue that has taken the county and state by storm – the College of DuPage. The school has been beleaguered by spending and transparency scandals, leading Connelly and other legislators to demand change. Nybo said it was a governance issue stemming from a culture instilled by President Robert Breuder. “Dr. Breuder has created a culture where his own board … may have felt hindered in their ability to question what he was doing,” he said. “Any individual who is entrusted with such immense power and is running an organization as big as the College of DuPage needs to be approachable, needs to be transparent, needs to engage with the stakeholders.” Connelly has filed a bill asking for a state audit of the school’s state funds paid for by the college, but has yet to hear an answer from school officials. During the turmoil, Nybo said, it is important to remember the college is still an asset to the county.

My dining companion couldn’t resist the fish either, and helped polish off the generous serving. With thoughts still lured by dessert, half the pizza became takeout for lunch the next day. And then the dessert list arrived. We were torn between such choices as flourless chocolate cake and gelato, but went with the server’s recommendation: mascarpone
cheesecake with passion-fruit glaze, perched on a polenta shortbread cookie. Pretty as a picture, it arrived on a plate drizzled with creme anglaise and topped with a raspberry nestled in a mint leaf. It paired well with a frothy cappuccino. It was a sweet finish to our night out. And the romantic setting, complete with a great musical soundtrack, remained conducive to conversation, no mean feat in a popular restaurant. ELMHURST – In the mood to let seasoned pros do the cooking, we decided to make our first visit to Francesca’s Amici. It inhabits a warm, sophisticated space in downtown Elmhurst near the York Theatre. The spot is part of the regional collection of Francesca’s Italian restaurants, each with its own name. Among other suburban locations are La Grange, Bolingbrook and Naperville. Guiding us in from the dark, a glowing sign reading Amici (Italian for friends) crowns the inviting bar area off the entrance. The dining room is stylish with sleek booths and banquettes, and an artistic array of sepia photographs of people and places in Italy, capped with an undulating ceiling of curving beams set off by rolled copper mesh giving off a subtle sheen. Our server made us feel instantly welcome, and we soon had a small plate of freshly grated Parmesan to accompany a carafe of herbed olive oil for dipping our bread. An appetizer of scallops (capesante) in a bed of tomato risotto hit spicy notes to complement the creamy texture of the shellfish. Vowing to leave room for dessert, my dining companion selected a pizza with sausage, mushroom and his go-to spinach. He’d never been satisfied with the standard portion of spinach, until this pizza arrived, transformed from 2-D to 3-D by a tower of wonderfully prepared greens atop the pie. “I’m in awe,” he said at first sight. The fresh spinach tasted lightly sauteed with garlic, and he kindly shared a portion with me as an added side dish for my seafood plate. I ordered the tilapia paesana, expecting the thin fish I’ve encountered at the market. Instead, a plump, wonderfully moist fillet appeared, delicately breaded and smothered with a colorful melange of shredded

Sentinels softball young but talented By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – Westmont’s softball team was one win away from making a trip to the state semifinals in Class 2A last season. The graduation of seven seniors, including six who played on a regular basis, leaves a void the Sentinels will fill with eight freshman players. Despite the roster turnover, Westmont expects to have a similar level of success in 2015. “We’re young, but we’ve got some talent and the kids have been working hard all year during the offseason,” head coach Jason Bolden said. “We’ve got a lot of talent, they just have to get

There’s some inexperience, but we’ll be solid.” While the overall team is young, there is plenty of experience behind the plate and in the pitcher’s circle as the senior battery of pitcher Kristen Skala, a Quincy University recruit, and catcher Skyler Poel return. Another senior, Alana Pace, returns to the infield, and Emma May is another senior who will contribute. “The really good thing is the leadership,” Bolden said. “Skala, Poel and Pace and the seniors have really stepped up and taken the leadership role upon themselves to help these kids get prepared.” Bolden plans to have three freshmen and two sophomores in the start-

Kiera Aldridge was all-conference as a freshman and Rachel Chorney really worked hard in the offseason to get ready,” Bolden said. “I’m tough on the sophomores, but they know I have their backs. They’re good kids.” Freshmen Ashley Eiermann, Allena Kraft and Alix Mendoza will see plenty of playing time as the Sentinels lay the foundation for the future while staying competitive this season. That’s in addition to a grueling Interstate Eight Conference schedule against the likes of Coal City, Lisle, Manetno, Peotone, Reed-Custer and Wilmington. “We’ve got our work cut out for us. It’s going to be an up and down season, but we’re going to learn from it and we’re excited for it,” Bolden said. “We think we can make some noise, and that’s what we want to do. “We’re going to do OK. Outlook: In spite of graduating six seniors from last year’s squad, three of whom are now playing for collegiate programs, the 2015 Redwings softball team packs a formidable punch in the middle of their lineup. Illinois-bound senior Stephanie Abello is one of the most dominating hitters in the area and will bat third for Benet this season. Last spring, the catcher batted .481, hit 22 home runs, recorded 63 RBIs and plated 48 runs. The most prolific hitter in program history, Abello has 52 homers for her career and is two shy of the IHSA record. This season, she has five home runs in the Redwings’ first four games. “[Abello is] the most powerful hitter in Benet history,” head coach Jerry Schliff said. “Not only is she the best hitting catcher in the area, she is the best catcher; she picked off 15 runners last year and has picked off three this year.” It doesn’t get any easier for opposing pitchers who decide to intentionally walk Abello, as fellow senior slugger Emily York will bat cleanup after hitting .500 and belting 11 home runs last season. York, who signed to play softball at Florida Institute of Technology, also is an excellent defensive first baseman. Returning senior Jessica Brown has great range and a solid glove in center field for the Redwings, while junior Brooklyn Baccega also is a very productive outfielder. In the pitching circle, junior Megan Stoppelman will carry the load for Benet after going 15-3 during her past two seasons on varsity. Freshmen Allie Goettsch (shortstop) and Alexis Potapczak (second base) and sophomore Meagan McCor-

Outlook: Although the Trojans graduated four all-conference players from last season’s squad, a wealth of returning talent means the Trojans are still contenders to repeat as West Suburban Silver champions. This season’s Trojan team sports power up and down their lineup. University of Indianapolis commit Emma Varsbergs is back for her senior season and will play third base. The Trojan leader hit .322 as a junior and is the spark plug for the DGN offense. Additionally, Varsbergs younger sister, sophomore Zoe Varsbergs, returns as the team’s everyday first baseman. She batted .369 with 20 RBIs in her freshman season. Four-year varsity shortstop Jaclyn Pasakarnis is looking to build off a solid season in which she hit .358, while fellow middle infielder Polaski is back in the fold after posting a .324 average

POSITION OF C P 2B OF SS 1B/OF P
Outlook: With a handful of returning position players and both starting pitchers back from last season’s Mustangs squad that won a regional and advanced to a sectional final, spirits and expectations are high among the Downers Grove South softball team. “We have a lot of returners, including our two starting pitchers that helped us win 33 games last season, Caroline Hedgcock and Payton Buresch,” DGS head coach Ron Havelka said. “And with six position players back, we should be pretty solid defensively and have a well-rounded offense.” Downers Grove South packs an intimidating one-two punch from the pitching circle. Mustangs lefty ace Hedgcock, a University of Maryland commit, was an all-conference selection last season after posting an 18-3 record with a 1.62 ERA. Buresch also was stellar in her freshman campaign, going a perfect 15-0 with an ERA less than 1. DGS also has the gloves to back up their starters, as the team committed just 33 errors in 36 games last season. On offense, senior outfielder Zahrya McFarland will provide a big bat in the middle of the order after leading the team with a .393 batting average in 2014. Juniors Kristin Lea and Nicole Bowman also can do some damage out of the two and five holes, respectively, while leadoff slap hitter Kristen Bialek proved she can wreak havoc on the bases after stealing 33 bags last season. Megan LoBianco will move from third base to shortstop this season and provide some pop in the bottom half of the order. Catcher Rebekah Ondracek is a fantastic defender and is looking to build off a breakout offensive season.

Freshman midfielder Chloe Nowka, who hustled and created havoc throughout the game, was rewarded for her hard work when she capped the scoring with 5:42 left, stealing the ball on the right wing and converting a breakaway. The Trojans also had three shots hit the post. “I think we’re working well together because the younger girls are definitely learning from the older girls that have been in the program,” Downers Grove North junior defender Alyse Dutcher said. “The younger girls are doing really well this year. They kind of look up to us and I like it.” Dutcher, a center back, has been the linchpin of a defen-
sive line that has combined with freshman goalie Grace Stevenson to post three shutouts. Stevenson had to make just two saves against the Warriors while her teammates took time to refine their skills. “In these types of games we like to work on how we move the ball throughout the field, so especially in the back, where I play, we like to switch the field, which we need to work on,” Dutcher said. “This is kind of a game where you can work on things you need to work on. We’ve improved a lot and I see us doing well in the future.” The Trojans travel to Riverside Brookfield on Friday before opening the prestigious Pepsi Challenge on Saturday against No. 6 seed Loyola.
Caroline Hedgcock is off to a torrid start to begin the spring softball season. The University of Maryland commit has dominated from the rubber thus far, giving up just three runs in her first four starts. Hedgcock, the Sears Hardware & Appliance Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life Sports Editor Alex Soulier about the hot start and the high expectations heading into the season.

DOWNERS GROVE – With a roster that encompasses players with a wide range of skill sets and experience levels, the Downers Grove North soccer team needed a little time to jell. The Trojans have made great strides in the first three weeks of the season and have bounced back from two narrow losses to win their past two games, with the latest victory a 5-0 drubbing of Willowbrook Monday night at Carstens Field. “We had two tough losses against Lemont and Hinsdale Central,” Downers North coach Bob Calder said. “Both of them were pretty close and since we do have a blend of freshmen through seniors, I think it’s going to get better. We’ve already gotten so much better throughout the first five games and they really work well together.” Indeed, the Trojans (3-2) – who start four seniors, three freshmen, two juniors and two sophomores – have outscored their past two foes by an 11-0 margin, with a host of players contributing. Senior forwards Jessica Ridderhoff and Lexi Cittadine and sophomore forward Emily Redpath all scored within an eight-minute span early in the first half Monday against Willowbrook (1-6), which was overwhelmed from the start. Young and old shined again in the second half, with senior midfielder Ellena Metros scoring off a free kick from junior Arlinda Osmani
