WESTMONT – The Westmont village board took on three issues of note during its May 14 meeting.

1. Sales tax clarification

Mike Ramsey, director of public works, said the contractors already have their equipment in town for a different project and want to stay to finish the water main work as well. The village received six bids for the project.

eshields@shawmedia.com

The board voted unanimously to approve a ½ percent sales tax increase for the second time. The board originally approved the increase ordinance during an April meeting, but Village Manager Steve May said the state had concerns about how it was worded, so the ordinance had to be rephrased and passed again. Voters approved a referendum to allow the increase with 50.7 percent of the vote in the April election. Officials previously have said the village can expect to see an increase of $800,000 to $1 million in annual revenue, which

3. New trustees sworn in

2. Water main improvements

The board unanimously approved installing a new water main on North Park Street. The bid was awarded to J. Congdon Sewer Service Inc. of Carol Stream, which bid $765,792.10 on the project, according to board documents. The bid was 29 percent below the engineering estimate, and was nearly $146,000 lower than the next lowest bidder.

The board also held a swearing-in ceremony for its two newest members and one returning trustee. Steven Nero, Marie Johanik-Guzzo and Linda Liddle took the oath of office during the meeting. Nero was the only incumbent who sought re-election in April. He has served on the board since 2011. Johanik-Guzzo and Liddle will be serving their first terms. The board also recognized its outgoing trustees: Sue Senicka, who has sat on the board since 1999, and Bob Scott, who has been a trustee since 2007.

LETTERS FROM THE IRS AND IL

are more frequent now since the IRS and IL are very busy this summer! Some examples of notices you might receive are: • Omitted income from matching of IRS information and what you have included on your tax return - the IRS is reviewing 2012 and 2013 tax returns now. • Bills for Penalties and Interest for underpayment of 2014 tax (if you owed more than $1000 to the IRS or $500 to IL) or discrepancies with ES tax paid • Notice requesting documentation of deductions (especially charitable donations) • Deficiency notice for additional taxes • Request for tax returns from nonfilers These ONLY come via snail mail - any call you get saying you owe money or have a tax issue is NOT the IRS. It is called Phishing and many, many taxpayers have been scammed out of millions of dollars. Do NOT talk to them or give them any information! Strauss Tax Service can help you respond to IRS and IL Letters. As an Enrolled Agent, we can represent you before the IRS, prepare letters with back up material and track your case. We can also prepare IL returns and work with the State to get you up to date with IL taxes filed and paid. We are located at 624 62nd Street, Downers Grove and are open from 9AM – 5PM, M – F or by appointment.

WESTMONT – Bring your appetite this Memorial Day weekend, because Westmont’s Red, White, & Bar-B-Q is back. This will be the Westmont Lions Club’s ninth year hosting the barbecue festival and competition, which will take place May 22 to 24 at Ty Warner Park. The event features a festival open to the public, as well as one of the largest barbecue cooking contests in Illinois. “Competition barbecue is different from the barbecue vendors we’ll have at the festival,” event coordinator Chris Svitak said. “Competition barbecue is the cooks babying a couple racks of ribs like they’re their own children.” The festival will have family fun including food, live music and a carnival with rides for kids. Various commercial vendors will come out for the event, which also will offer a beer tent. The barbecue competition is made up of three contests – two sponsored by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, to be hosted May 23 and 24, and an Amateur Rib Contest, which will take place May 23. Those competing in the Kansas competitions cook chicken, ribs, pork and beef brisket, with the one rule being that the chef cannot use propane in the preparations. The competitors are professionals coming from across the country. Almost 50 teams will cook May 23 and about 60 teams will cook May 24. Trophies, prizes and cash will be awarded to the winners. Jim Addington, a Lions Club member, barbecue con-

eryone. It brings a lot of people to our town because of the size, it brings recognition, and it becomes a nice fundraiser for the Lions Club, and that money goes right back into the community.” Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter, a 35-year Lions Club member, said he is proud of the event. “I think the Red, White,

Ask Dr. Webster

CONSEQUENCES OF A LOST TOOTH Q: What happens when you lose a tooth? A: There are a number of ways to lose a tooth. A fall or some other type of accident can knock a tooth out, or a tooth may finally fall victim to decay or loosen and fall out because of periodontal, or gum, disease. One of the dangers of a lost tooth is that it can start a domino effect in your mouth. In the normal healthy mouth, the closely packed teeth support one another. When there is a gap in that support system, over time the teeth near the gap will start to shift and loosen. So if you lose a tooth, for whatever reason, you should consult a dentist immediately. Your dentist may recommend a crown or a bridge. A crown would be fitted over the remaining portion of a tooth that was essentially, but not completely, lost. A bridge is an appliance that fills the space where a tooth is completely lost. You may also be a candidate for an implant, which involves putting a metal anchor directly into the jaw and, after a time, attaching a small post and artificial tooth to the anchor. Not everyone, however, is a candidate for an implant. You must have sufficient jawbone for the procedure to be successful. If you are missing a tooth, or have loose teeth, talk with a dentist about your options. The best way to cut down the likelihood of being in that position, though, is to visit your dentist at least twice a year.

The People’s Resource Center HOSTS its grand opening May 15 to show the community what its new Westmont location has to offer. be torn down at the end of the day. The new facility also has other tools to better serve clients, including sinks for the art classes, Perez said. Perez said the nonprofit looked at what it had at its Wheaton location at 201 S. Naperville Road and made a wish list to figure out what to put in the new facility. The new center offers a food pantry, computer literacy and art classes, job

assistance and other social services. Construction started in January and the nonprofit began moving in March 28, before officially opening April 1. “The response has been tremendously positive,” Perez said. DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said he supports the vision of the People’s Resource Center because it involves neighbors helping neighbors.

Cronin said he strongly believes the county is at its best when the community works together to raise its neighbors up. “That’s certainly what we’ve seen here,” he said. The organization is continuing to raise money to support the new site. So far, it has raised almost $2 million in community donations, of an anticipated $2.75 million.

By Denise Freese Learning to dance provides a wonderful form of self-expression, a great way to exercise, and a skill to be used forever. From ballet to tap, modern to ballroom, and hip-hop to jazz, there are many styles of dance, all worth learning. It’s important to find a studio that fits your personal needs, so you will feel comfortable and have fun as you or your child learns to dance. Things to consider when choosing a dance studio include: Studio setting: Your studio should be clean, open, and comfortable. Make sure you like the vibe in the studio; you’ll be spending a lot of time there. Qualified Teachers: Check the qualifications of the instructors. They should have a degree in dance, relevant dance experience, and the knowledge needed to instruct people with different body types, abilities, and learning styles.

Dance Floor Type: Don’t ever dance on a concrete floor. A cushioned, or “sprung” floor offers shock absorption for joints and feet, and is safer for your body. What are the class sizes? For fun or recreation, consider a larger class. For serious dancers who want individual attention, try smaller classes. Is there a variety of dance forms offered? Some studios focus on 1 form. While that is okay for some, most dancers tend to want to take a variety of classes. Other things to consider; tuition, location, class availability/times, and class trial offerings. If possible, talk to friends or co-workers who have had a good experience with a studio for their input. By putting effort into gathering the relevant information, you’re sure to choose a studio that is right for you.

WESTMONT – The People’s Resource Center hosted a grand opening ceremony May 15 to celebrate the organization’s new Westmont location. The nonprofit opened its doors to the community to show off its new home at 104 Chestnut Ave., across from Ty Warner Park, and all the new space it has acquired. Executive Director Kim Perez said the location was “kind of a dream come true.” The 13,000-square-foot facility is much more spacious than the organization’s previous Westmont location. Perez said she is confident the new space can make a difference in the community. “This space … is something that will allow us to continue to respond to poverty and hunger for years to come,” she said. The old location was just 4,500 square feet, and Perez said it was difficult to accommodate clients’ needs at that facility. At its old space at 649 Blackhawk Drive, the center’s weekly clothes closet had to be set up in the lobby and torn down upon completion. Now, the closet has its own room and doesn’t need to

Village Board transition – thank you trustees Senicka and Scott:

On May 14, Marie Johnik-Guzzo, Linda Liddle and Steve Nero were sworn in as part of our new Village Board, and we also honored outgoing Trustees Sue Senicka and Bob Scott for all they have done for so many years. I’m looking forward to working with our new board, and I wish Sue and Bob well as they start another chapter in their lives.

Congratulations Teco Dance Troupe and Color Stomp Event: There’s always something happening in Westmont.

In the past few weeks, Westmont hosted a Taiwanese Dance Troupe during the Midwest visit of their North American Tour. Their performance was wonderful, and we look forward to continuing our work with TECO and the cultural center on 63rd Street. Also, congratulations to Heather Blaney, Michelle Torisse and everyone at CUSD 201 who worked on the Color Stomp 5K event to raise awareness regarding human trafficking. Photos from both of these event can be found on the Village Photo Gallery at westmont.illinois.gov. Working together, we can accomplish great things. I look forward to working with you as we strive to ensure that Westmont is a great place to live, work, raise a family, go out to eat, buy a car and play.

Ron Gunter is the mayor of Westmont.

We spend a lot of time worrying about preventing things that might never happen. We buy homeowners’ insurance and install smoke detectors in case a fire ever breaks out. We grab an umbrella on the way out the door in case it rains. We arrange for our first responders to have training in all sorts of emergency situations, in case anyone in our community should ever experience such a calamity. The thing is, we never really know how likely any of these things are. Most of us know someone who has dealt with a house fire, but most people don’t have their house burn down. There was rain in the forecast for this past Sunday, but barely a drop was seen. Some first responders get special training in case of a train derailment of an oil shipment, but that almost never – Well, that last one isn’t quite as true as it used to be. While train derailments are still quite rare, the number of oil shipments on our railways has skyrocketed – and there have been some unsettling derailments of those shipments in North America. In 2008, there were 9,500 railway oil shipments recorded in the U.S.; by 2013, that number had risen to 435,000, according to a Congressional report. That massive spike has been accompanied this year by derailments in West Virginia and Ontario and one in March in Galena, Ill. Fortunately, there have been no deaths in these incidents, but the same can’t be said for the village of Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, in Canada, which suffered 47 deaths after a derailment and explosion in 2013. Many of these oil tankers are rumbling through Chicago’s suburbs on a daily basis, including on Metra’s BNSF, Union Pacific West and Heritage Corridor lines. Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel, who’s eager to bring more attention to this issue, has heard reports that there are about 40 shipments going through his village on a weekly basis. As Weitzel points out, most of the communities in western Cook and DuPage counties were built around their rail lines, with vibrant

Suburban Life Media Editorial Board Laura Burke, Dave Lemery, Matt Hendrickson, Anna Schier, Alex Soulier, Mary Beth Versaci

commercial districts nestled right up to the tracks. If an incident like what happened in Quebec were to occur here, the toll could be catastrophic. Weitzel has worked to bring attention not only to this risk but to the lack of training available for local police officers, who would likely be the first to respond to the scene of any such accident. He’s sent letters to Gov. Bruce Rauner and to Anthony Foxx, secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation, pointing out the difficulties local agencies have in getting information on when exactly such tankers are passing through and in getting training for officers. Such training already exists, Weitzel said, and there are programs in place to allow firefighters to make use of it. But he said the cost, distance and lengthy waiting list make it impractical for him to send any officers right now. Thus far, Weitzel has received no response from his letters. He’s had informal discussions with other state and federal officials and received nothing more than vague promises, or protestations that he’s overstating the issue, that the train cars that pass through our area aren’t going fast enough to derail or real-time information on the tankers can’t be shared for fear of terrorists intercepting and then misusing the information. It’s easy to dismiss Weitzel’s concerns. But it seems like every disaster of the past 20 years has had some sort of warning ignored, whether it was 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill ... the list goes on. Are the odds of an oil tanker derailment and explosion in our area high? Probably not. But knowing there’s a lot more oil flowing through our towns on a regular basis, it sure would be comforting to know someone is taking these concerns seriously. We’d like to see state and especially federal officials take more steps to ease everyone’s minds that everything possible is being done to prevent another Lac-Mégantic incident.

So the Clintons’ have reported making “mistakes” on past tax returns for the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Family Foundation. With the hundreds of millions of dollars involved, I would think they would have hired expert, high-priced accountants to work on those tax returns instead of going to H&R Block!

Animal shelters are not zoos

To the person who said to stop shooing people away from shelter animals, we are not shooing people away who are ready to adopt an animal, a family pet. We don’t want the people who are coming for something to do because they clog up the shelter like a zoo. We want the people that are 100-percent ready to adopt; anybody else can see the animals on our website. And in regards to the rescues that do not have a brick-andmortar building, those people have the most limited time to spend adopting an animal out because they do not have a physical shelter. Their animals are at vet offices or foster homes. So, until you are 100-percent ready to adopt and see an animal, don’t fill out an application.

Three questions for dog owners

I have three questions for dog owners. Can dogs stay inside their home for more than two hours without having to relieve themselves? Why don’t dog owners use their own properties to let their dogs relieve themselves? Why is it OK to use other people’s properties to let dogs relieve themselves?

Health clubs’ unfair practices

Someone needs to fix health clubs’ cancellation policies. No matter how much of a notice you give, you still wind up paying for the extra month. You pay an enrollment fee, you pay a monthly fee, you sign up right away and can start working out, but even when I brought my health club a doctor’s note saying that I had to stop my workout regimen, I was charged an extra month ... That’s just wrong.

Thank you Lisle Park District for the toxic chemicals. This includes parks and retention basins in our residential areas.

SPONSORED BY By Denise Freese Technology has advanced to the degree that it’s almost impossible to go an entire day without using it in some way. Colleges and high schools were the first to incorporate technology in the classrooms in the form of laptops and interactive smart boards, in order to prepare students for technological requirements of the jobs they would soon hold. Currently, even middle schools and elementary schools are integrating technological devices into the classrooms. Children as young as age 3 typically learn how to play games on an iPad or an iPhone, and most are advanced enough by the time they enter school to be able to use devices as an advantage in helping them study and learning new concepts. At St. Mary of Gostyn School, beginning in the 2015-2016 school year, children in grades 5-8 will receive their own Surface tablet or Chromebook for school and home use. Grade 4 students will use Lenovo Thinkpads in the classroom, and K-grade 3 students will have iPad centers at school

at their disposal. “Two computer labs, an instructional/literacy lab and a library computer center for online database searches, will be available to students,” said Mary Buchler, Technology Director with SMG. She added, “Also, the entire SMG campus has WiFi connectivity.” This progressive approach to technological integration has many benefits for students, teachers, and parents at the school. Google Classroom is a software program that is used for collaborative projects; students submit assignments electronically to teachers, and teachers can assess, comment on, and evaluate the assignment. As all the area high schools use this program, SMG students are being prepared for the upcoming years. Edline is a program that stores grades online for grades 6-8. Grades are updated weekly by teachers for access by both students and their parents. Teacher webpages are linked to the parish website, so parents, teachers, and students can communicate effectively, according to Buchler.

Shame on College of DuPage’s vice chairwoman, Deanne Mazzochi. Her argument at a recent meeting was utterly embarrassing to anyone that lives in College of DuPage’s district. Not recognizing Kim Savage and Nancy Svoboda was very political and just beat those two women down after they already lost the election. We should be thankful for their service, volunteer hours and their endless dedication to the school.

Chicago, Illinois – The Chicago Red Stars stayed undefeated in their fifth NWSL regular season game on Friday, fighting back from two goals down against hosts Houston Dash, courtesy of a second consecutive brace by reigning NWSL Player of the Week Sofia Huerta. The rookie bagged both of her tallies in the second half, including the first immediately after Houston had doubled its lead courtesy of a Kealia Ohai strike. Rachel Axon had scored the day’s opening goal for the Dash on an opening-half penalty kick. The hosts created the first promising opportunity in the 10th minute, Jen LaPonte hitting a long ball into the penalty area and Brittany Bock beating netminder Michele Dalton to the ball, only to see her headed redirect float just over the frame. The Dash had another quality look 14 minutes later, as Chicago’s New Zealand international Abby Erceg headed the ball out to Tiffany McCarty at the edge of the box and the 24-year-old fired through traffic to force a solid stop from Dalton. Houston did find the net just before the half-hour mark. Red Stars defender Arin Gilliland’s desperation tackle brought Ohai to the ground inside the area and Rachael Axon opened the scoring by side-footing a textbook penalty kick inside the right post. Huerta first knocked on the Dash door in the 41st minute of the match, as she received the ball at the top of the box and cut across a defender to her left before rifling a left-footed blast toward goal that was parried wide by diving opposition goalkeeper Bianca Henninger. Chicago increased the urgency after the break and created two close looks in quick succession. In the 56th minute, Alyssa Mautz crossed the ball in from the right and a wide-open Rachel Quon pushed the ball wide for an agonizing miss from the doorstep. Mautz sent in another dangerous cross from the same flank moments later, and Vanessa DiBernardo redirected it to Hoy at the far post, followed by a toe poke under pressure that

sent the ball sailing over the bar from close range. Instead of seeing the scores leveled, the fans at Houston’s BBVA Compass Stadium celebrated the Dash’s second tally on an excellent counter attack just before the hour mark. Having won possession inside their own penalty area, the hosts played the ball out to Melissa Henderson near the center circle, and the 25-year-old sprinted into the opposition half before releasing a streaking Ohai. The second-year attacker did well to confidently slot her finish underneath the onrushing Dalton to double her side’s lead. The Red Stars promptly responded to the additional setback. Hoy’s delicate 60th-minute touch put Hoy through on the right side of the box and the first-year forward found the net with a wellplaced shot toward the far post. The visitors continued to put pressure on the Dash following the goal, and Mautz nearly added the icing on her strong individual performance with a 68th-minute equalizer, the Houston defense scrambling to clear the Missouri native’s redirect of Danielle Colaprico’s corner kick from the left off the line. Chicago’s relentlessness finally paid off in the 81st minute, Gilliland sending a ball into the penalty area that substitute Cara Walls laid off to Huerta, who displayed some outstanding footwork in cutting to her left and blasting a low shot past the outstretched arm of metminder Henninger. It would be the final noteworthy moment of the match, as the visitors remained at the top of the NWSL table with a hard-earned point on the road. The Chicago Red Stars look to earn their fourth win in six regular season games when they travel to take on defending champions FC Kansas City on Saturday, May 23. The club’s next home match is on June 20 against Washington Spirit. Commission officials will visit with the college’s trustees and president – likely interim Joe Collins – and determine whether it is in compliance with several Criteria for Accreditation and Core Components, such as if the school’s “educational responsibilities take primacy over other purposes, such as generating financial returns for investors.” The commission also will look at the Board of Trustees’ independence, ethics

and policy adherence and cohesion. The review is scheduled June 29 to 30, according to a news release from the college. “While I am confident that the College fully meets the HLC criteria for accreditation, I understand the need for the HLC to conduct an advisory visit,” Collins said in a statement. “We will cooperate completely with the visiting team to ensure they have an accurate

view of who we are and what we do.” Faculty Association President Glenn Hansen said in a statement the association was concerned about the visit, but confident in the school’s core mission of teaching and learning. Board Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton said during a special meeting May 14 the board was “equal of any task that the advisory commission will put in front of us.” “With transparency, intelligence and energy, we will address any of their concerns successfully and we will work with them to solve any issues that they might have,” she said.

In recent months, College of DuPage administrators and faculty have stressed the controversies surrounding the school have not affected its academics. Now, its accreditation is under review because of the turmoil. The college received a letter May 5 from the Higher Learning Commission, which is the school’s accreditation agency, stating the College of DuPage had been placed under review. “Commission policy on Special Monitoring ... allows the Commission President to approve the scheduling of special monitoring for an institution when it is undergoing ‘serious legal, financial, or ethical investigations,’” Commission President Barbara Gellman-Danley stated in the letter. She cited several items and media reports in the letter to school President Robert Breuder, who has been placed on paid leave. Included are “federal civil and criminal investigations related to institutional finances, ethics violations and changes to assigned credit hours for courses offered through the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy.”

“With transparency, intelligence and energy, we will address any of [Higher Learning Commission’s] concerns successfully and we will work with them to solve any issues that they might have.”

College of DuPage staff: President Breuder ordered positive pre-election mailers By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com

adno=S0250166

After a victory in April, the former Clean Slate candidates turned new College of DuPage trustees hope to address a series of mailers sent in the weeks before and after the April 7 election. The Board of Trustees, led by its new majority reform coalition, grilled a pair of college administrators during a special meeting May 14 about four postcard mailings of 377,000 each sent out beginning in mid-March by order of President Robert Breuder. Vice President of Marketing and Communications Joe Moore said it was unusual to send such mailers across the entire district during election season. “I would not want to presume to read Dr. Breuder’s mind. The discussion at the time was that there was a lot of negativity in the air regarding the college and this was meant to balance some of that,” he said. That negativity includes possible misuse of funds, a $763,000 buyout for Breuder approved in January and other issues that have led to county and federal subpoenas and a state audit. Breuder was put on paid leave last month. In early March, Moore said Breuder asked the communications department to send out a postcard across the district on “why COD is the fastest-growing community college.” Later the same week, Breuder requested two more mailers, Moore said, on the college’s fiscal fitness and its recent community outreach and survey. By the end of the month, he asked for a total of six mailings, covering the school’s academic reputation, student testimonials and various auxiliary programs. Moore acknowledged the mailers’ messaging was “not normally postcards we’d send out.” The first four were distributed March 18, April 1 – six days before the election – April 14 and April 20. None of the postcards were approved by the board, as all individually fell under $25,000, not including postage, which does not require a vote, Moore said. Including all costs, the mailings totaled more than $41,000 each. Moore said he brought the matter to the board’s attention once it was clear the mailings were part of a series and should be considered as such financially. This led to the board’s cancellation of the last two of the six. The cost for the first two mailings

“I would not want to presume to read Dr. Breuder’s mind. The discussion at the time was that there was a lot of negativity in the air regarding the college and this was meant to balance some of that.” Joe Moore Vice president of marketing and communications was covered because the school did not print a third 2015 issue of its informational magazine, “Impact,” Moore said, instead opting to increase the size of an earlier edition. To pay for mailers after the first two, Breuder approved a money transfer from the college’s contingency fund, which is designed to be used in case of emergency or unforeseen expenditures, according to board Vice Chairwoman Deanne Mazzochi. The mailings prompted state Sen. Michael Connelly, R-Lisle, to propose a bill prohibiting local government bodies from sending out “promotional” materials before an election. The bill is being considered by the House of Representatives, according to the Illinois General Assembly website. In addition to the timing of the mailers, trustees took issue with the lack of board and public knowledge of the fund transfer. College Treasurer and Senior Vice President of Administration Thomas Glaser said it was school policy that the board only approve transfers of funds on a quarterly basis. College attorney Tim Elliot said an administrative guideline gave the administration permission to transfer money before the board actually approved the expenditure. Trustee Charles Bernstein asked staff to look into publishing fund transfers online in real time to increase transparency. Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton said the practice was a hole in school policy, and expressed intent to address the issue during the board’s May 21 meeting. “It is not clear the way the policies are written now,” she said. ‘”It’s actually not micromanaging, it’s proper oversight. These kinds of things, we can reach into procedure and correct. We don’t want to be in procedure every day, but when we have something like this it’s very serious.”

MEMORIAL DAY TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT The Downers Grove Police Department is participating in a year-long initiative that focuses on impaired driving and seat belt enforcement on specific holidays, including Memorial Day. This initiative is in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), and is funded with an IDOT traffic grant. Officers will be working saturation patrols that target impaired drivers and seat belt enforcement zones. This May 11 through May 25, the Downers Grove Police Department will be joining hundreds of other Illinois law enforcement agencies to remind motorists to "Click-it or Ticket." The Memorial Day weekend kicks off the summer vacation season and the police department wants to ensure that everyone makes it to their destination safely. It is the perfect time to remind everyone that seat belt use is the law for anyone in the front and back seat of the car. During the 2014 Memorial Day holiday weekend there were 12 traffic fatalities. Three of those fatalities were alcohol related. The best defense against an impaired driver is a safety belt. Buckle up, every trip, every time, every vehicle, every position.

Hands down of course, the chicken is the hero of the meal. Never frozen, the meat is marinated for 24 hours and cooked to order. According to the restaurant’s website, the recipe dates back to two female farm owners who sold chickens to the original spot when it was just a gas station with a lunch counter around the 1940s. Dell Rhea took over the Chicken Basket in 1963, and what endures is the carefully crafted, breaded and deep-fried meal – a crunchy, tender, lip-smacking and succulent sensation. The baked mac and cheese is a hearty complementary dish to the main course. Tiny elbow macaroni are smothered in what the eatery describes as a “Colorado River of Cheese Sauce,” topped with shredded cheeses and baked until golden brown. The restaurant menu extends to sandwiches, ribs, salad bar, soups and seafood, plus prime rib, roast turkey and other specials on various days of the week.

Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket, whose origins date back to a gas station lunch counter, is part of the Route 66 Hall of Fame. The restaurant also is home to the Blue Rooster cocktail lounge.

The only mistake my parents and I made that Sunday afternoon was not saving room for dessert. And for those who know me and my mother best, the only way to our hearts is a classic root beer float. Dell Rhea’s, which also proposes a Route 66 Dreamsicle Float and a slice of apple, key lime or cherry pie, keeps in mind that the best way to truly start and end a meal is with the company you keep, savoring the time you spend together.

WILLOWBROOK – Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket is tucked among small, one-story buildings and a few chain hotels on a dusty, winding road that once reigned as Route 66. Today, the towering neon marquee of the Willowbrook establishment enjoys a quieter perch. Inside tells a different story. Clusters of relatives and favorite friends are gathered around small tables draped in red-andwhite-checkered tablecloths. A darker shade of patterned red curtains flanks the windows. Ceramic chickens, framed newspaper articles and photographs fill in the spaces of sporadically placed shelves and countertops. A small fireplace stands flat against the wall on the far end of the dining room. The room feels familiar. It feels like home. And there’s no denying that the 66-plus-yearold restaurant has greeted passersby throughout the decades, treated them like family and wished them well on the way to their destinations. As for the Chicken Basket, it arrived in the Route 66 Hall of Fame. As my parents and I took our seats and scanned the menu, we adopted the rhythm of the nostalgic room, swapping smiles and stories. Importantly, we prepped ourselves for the beginning of our comfort food adventure. We began our meal with appetizers we consider classic – fried chicken liver and gizzards. The tasty starters were served with sweet-and-spicy barbecue sauce. What’s noteworthy about them is their flaky coating, especially the chicken gizzards. Both were crispy, moist and lightly seasoned – neither bogged down by a dry outer crust nor drowning in oil. Our appetizers were followed shortly by two of Dell Rhea’s specialties – its famous fried chicken in a basket and baked mac and cheese. The basket comes with four, finger-licking pieces of chicken (leg, wing, breast and thigh), shoestring french fries, homemade coleslaw and baked biscuits. I don’t even know

Stay focused while golfing SPONSORED BY

By C.R. Walker Unlike team sports like basketball and lacrosse, golf is an individual, slowpaced game. You tee off and it could be several minutes before you take your next shot. That’s a lot of downtime and certainly even the best of players can lose their mental edge due to interruptions in play. A private coach can help you with your swing and also teach you more about how to choose clubs and attack a hole, but what about the mental aspect of golf? How do you block out the many distractions that are part of spending several hours on the links? Your cell phone ringing, work concerns, birds chirping, other players talking, loud golf carts whizzing around the course and others yelling, “Fore!” all need to be blocked out so you can perform at an optimum level.

It sounds easy to block those things out, but how many times have you looked back on a round and blamed a bad shot on distractions? Chances are petty good that it’s happened often. If you’re willing to spend time polishing your game at the driving range and the practice green, you’re still doing yourself a disservice by not maximizing your potential by improving your mental health. At BrainShape in Hinsdale, you can give yourself the edge over your playing partners through sports performance training. They offer Interactive Metronome (IM) therapy which rewires your internal brain clock by increasing, regenerating and strengthening the neural pathways in your brain. It will help you improve your balance, endurance, focus, timing, coordination and ability to focus at all times, which will ultimately improve your golf game. Now’s the time to maximize your performance at Brain Shape, 201 E. Ogden Ave., Suite, 106. Plenty of great months of golf lie ahead. Don’t you want to be at your best? their position and knows what they’re doing now. It feels good.” The wild second half swung to the Chargers with two goals to draw within 5-3. A hand ball against Westmont drew a penalty kick, but O’Malley jumped to deflect the PK off the crossbar and controlled any rebound. “I hate PK’s; they’re petrifying,” O’Malley said. “[Shooters] always look one way, so I said, ‘Whatever, I’ll go the way she looked.’ I threw my hands up, and it went in the air and I thought it went in the net. But I saw it land, grabbed it and took a couple of breaths.” “She [O’Malley] was out for about two weeks with a concussion and we took some tough losses,” Neurauter said. “This game she was unbelievable.” A starting lineup with seven freshmen and sophomores and just one senior (Teresa Kubiak) has Westmont headed to sectionals for the first time. “Last year was our learning season and we graduated our top two defensemen,” O’Malley said. “But I love our freshmen. Brenna [Kapusta] and Donna [Lalonde] do an amazing job on defense, and winning is nice because Westmont girls soccer has been treated kind of like a joke by others around school. Now it’s something.”

WESTMONT – A talented freshman class has helped Westmont’s girls soccer team reach new heights. Freshman Kerry Slaga’s sixth hat trick of the season helped the Sentinels (10-11) break open a 1-1 halftime tie and defeat St. Joseph 5-3 in the Class 1A Westmont regional final game May 15. Junior goalkeeper Hannah O’Malley helped deny a furious Charger comeback from a 5-1 deficit, leaping to deflect two shots off the crossbar, including a penalty kick with 10:32 left, as the Sentinels earned the first soccer regional title in school history. “It means a lot,” Westmont coach Ron Neurauter said. “Even as good as Kerry is, before the season with all these freshmen we were thinking this would be next year. But we’ll take it and we’re going to run with it.” After a first-half goal by Slaga, the Sentinels erupted for four goals in the first 17 minutes of the second half to break a 1-1 tie. Lily Lalonde scored off a rebound of Kaitlyn Niemer’s initial shot to make it 2-1 Sentinels with 34:30 left, and Slaga scored twice in three minutes to put Westmont up 4-1 and complete her hat trick. Freshman Karen Huerta added a breakaway goal – her third of the playoffs – for a 5-1 lead. “I think we just stayed focused and did what we did in the first half because we were pretty much dominating,” Slaga said of the four-goal outburst. “We just had to keep going and be smart. “We’ve just pulled together as a team. Westmont feeling ‘loose’ heading into postseason By JASON ROSSI

If you go

jrossi@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – Saturday was not a great day for Westmont’s baseball team. The Sentinels lost two games against Wheaton Academy as part of a nonconference doubleheader and also lost center fielder Adam Doll for the foreseeable future. Doll broke his hand trying to make a diving catch and his absence is a blow as Westmont gets set to start the playoffs May 20, but head coach DJ Cocks is putting a silver lining on the injury and the two losses. “He’s going to be tough to replace, but we’ve got guys who can step in and fill that role,” Cocks said. “We learned last year we have to fight through adversity.” Last year, the Sentinels won regional, sectional and supersectional titles on the way to a third-place finish in the Class 2A playoffs. They are hoping for more of the same this year and they know they will get every opponent’s best shot in the postseason, but Cocks said his team isn’t feeling extra pressure. “I think we’re pretty loose,” Cocks

Cocks had TC penciled in as the regional foe, although the Trojans played in a regional play-in game May 18. The Sentinels topped TC 11-1 earlier this season. Regardless of foe, Austin Loehman is scheduled to pitch first in the Erica Benson - ebenson@shawmedia.com postseason. “He’s 7-0 for us with two saves and Westmont’s Anthony Powers throws to first for an out April 30 in a game against Lyons doing a good job,” Cocks said. “He’s Township. SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The high school baseball regular season is winding down and the first pitches of the postseason are about to be thrown as teams look to go on a winning streak that culminates in a state title. Here’s the playoff outlook for Benet and Downers Grove North:

Benet

Regional: Benet Sectional: Nazareth Sectional seed: No. 2 First game: 4:30 p.m. May 27 vs. No. 15 Chicago North Grand/No. 18 Foreman

Outlook: The Redwings have had an up-and-down season and entered the week with a 16-14 overall record and an East Suburban Catholic record of 7-9. The trend for Benet has been close games as the team followed up a 3-1 win against Marist with three 2-1 losses, including two against St. Viator on May 16. Hosting its own Class 3A regional, Benet is the top seed there and No. 2 in the sectional. If the Redwings win their

postseason opener, they would move on to the regional final May 30.

Downers Grove North

Regional: Neuqua Valley Sectional: Romeoville Sectional seed: No. 5 First game: 4:30 p.m. May 28 vs. No. 12 Hinsdale Central/No. 21 East Aurora

Outlook: The Trojans had a 22-10 record entering May 18 and were sitting in second place in the West Suburban Silver, a half game up on Hinsdale Central. The way the seeds line up, the Red Devils would be the likely first-round regional foe when the playoffs begin next week. If that is the matchup, North has to like its chances. After finishing the regular season May 25, the Trojans will have time to rest and set up their pitching rotation before the playoffs. Also in their favor is a three-game sweep against the Red Devils earlier this season. Should North make the regional final, No. 4 seed and regional host Neuqua Valley will likely be the opponent in the May 30 regional final.

The sectional track meet could be considered the most important meet of the season for many athletes since the results of the sectional determine state meet berths. Emma Moravec survived the pressure situation of the sectional and made it to state in all three of her events, which included the open 800-meter run and as part of the 4x800 and 4x400 relays.
