Q: What are some good practices for a person wearing an orthodontic appliance? A: The first good practice is to follow explicitly the instructions given you by your dentist or orthodontist. But some general do’s and don’ts would include these: • Handle and store your appliances with care, and keep them in a safe place. For some reason, dogs find orthodontic appliances and dentures irresistible. • If you wear a removable appliance, take it out before swimming.

Subscription rates Single copy Delivery (annual)

• Whether they’re permanent or removable, braces readily trap food particles. Try to brush your teeth after every meal and snack. When brushing, pay particular attention to the danger zone between the appliance and the gum line. If you wear a removable appliance, take it out and clean it.

$1.50 $40/$79 out of area

• If your braces are permanent, protect them and your mouth with a mouth guard when playing a sport. • Avoid hard or sticky foods that can damage appliances. Eating hard-crusted bread, nuts or bagels, and gnawing on bones are not advisable. Sweets, like caramel and chewing gum, sugarless or not, are a bad idea. As mentioned above, follow instructions to the letter, particularly regarding the number of hours you should wear your appliance and/or headgear. The more closely you follow the instructions, the sooner you’ll reach your goal.

Westmont teacher receives Golden Apple award By PAIGE LISTON

Lillian Tsai

pliston@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – A good teacher encourages their students to learn the lessons required of them, guides them along their educational journey and inspires young minds along the way. A great teacher does that, plus much more. Westmont teacher Lillian Tsai is a great teacher. Tsai works at South Early Childhood Center in Westmont as an early childhood special education teacher and was recently honored with the Golden Apple award for excellence in teaching. Golden Apple is a nonprofit organization dedicated to celebrating and developing great teachers with the ability to make life-changing differences in the lives of students. The award recognizes those teachers for their contributions to building a stronger, better-educated citizenry, according to a news release about the award. Tsai’s passion for working with young children with special needs shows her commitment to bettering future generations.

Westmont teacher Lillian Tsai receives the Golden Apple award for excellence in teaching May 12 at South Early Childhood Center. “I believe in early intervention,” Tsai said. “There is a window of opportunity in which students are able to learn the best and that window lies with the young children, usually around 3 to 8 years old.” This year’s ten Golden Apple recipients were selected from a pool of more than 600 nominations. Tsai was surprised with the news

of her award May 12 by her colleagues, friends, family, students and members of the Golden Apple staff at a surprise party hosted in the community room of her school. Tsai said she is overjoyed and extremely honored to be chosen for this award. “Everyone at the surprise party kept the best secret because I had no idea I would win,” Tsai said. “This has been a very positive experience for me because I have been so inspired by the passion of the teachers in the Golden Apple program.” Linda Klawitter, the director of student services and early childhood program at the school, said keeping the secret was very difficult. “She’s so observant and our team of

teachers works so closely together that it made this secret nearly impossible to keep,” Klawitter said. “But the celebration turned out beautifully because everyone was very excited for Lillian [Tsai] and you could feel that throughout the building.” School board President Marie Charlton said Tsai is the epitome of what a teacher should be. “She has a very calm and gentle demeanor that pulls the kids in,” Charlton said. “They want to be with her and that’s a really powerful thing. We’re lucky to have her.” Tsai has been involved in education since 1996 and said the most rewarding part of teaching is seeing her students happy and excel in their work. “I always feel if a student is struggling in class, it’s not up to the student to change, it’s up to the teacher to change,” Tsai said. “I see it as a challenge because I think about how I can change myself to make it work for the student.” Klawitter has known Tsai since 2005 and said Tsai has all the characteristics that a parent would want their child’s teacher to have – patient, nurturing and talented – setting Tsai apart as a truly great teacher.

Supportive housing ends homelessness Now’s the time to revel in OUR VIEW

nice weather, great events

In the depths of January’s icy freeze, no doubt many of us wondered why anyone would choose to live in such a frozen wasteland. In February and March, the mercury slowly climbed, but still our teeth chattered and our ice scrapers were required most mornings. Even April brought its share of unexpectedly cool weather. None of that matters now. Shortsleeve weather is here, and now we remember why we wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. As this year’s Memorial Day parades and cookouts recede from view, many of us are taking stock of what to do with the rest of the nice weather stretching out ahead. Maybe a trip to somewhere interesting, a visit to distant family or even a jaunt to a foreign nation. There’s an abundance of options. While you’re making out your list, don’t forget to factor in all the great local festivals and events right in our area. For instance, in the coming months you can look forward to: • Lemont Beer Fest on June 6 • Lemont’s Sunset Soiree Concert Series during June, July and August • The Hinsdale Fine Arts Festival on June 13 and 14 • Rotary Grove Fest in Downers Grove

from June 25 to 28 • Lemont’s Heritage Fest on July 11 • Taste of Westmont from July 9 to 12 • DarienFest from Sept. 11 to 13 You can find a lot more than these in our online calendar at planitlife.com. These are much more than backup plans for when your out-of-town plans fall through. Many of these events will draw folks from out of the area to our towns. It’s an opportunity for you to get out into your community, mingle with your neighbors, maybe stumble across some aspect of your own hometown that you’d never noticed before. And, incidentally, patronizing local events is a great way to vote with your dollars for local businesses and groups. Any time you can spend a few bucks locally, you’re helping to keep your local community vibrant and thriving. Just one more way it benefits you. By fall, the number of great events will begin to dwindle again, holidays aside. There will come a weekend when you’re stuck inside, listening to the winds howl, knowing that even if there was some great event going on somewhere, you’d rather not brave the elements. Don’t let yourself regret that you passed up a chance to take advantage while the weather was nice.

Write to us We want to hear from you. Letters must be no more than 300 words. They must include your first and last name, town and a phone number for verification. We may edit them for clarity, accuracy and style. Email letters to letters@mysuburbanlife.com. The deadline is 4 p.m. Thursday for the following week’s paper.

Cleveland stopped smiling in 1987. He was working a steady job and had been there for five years when one day he came home to the worst news a parent can receive. Cleveland’s 1-year-old son had been beaten to death by his baby sitter. “I still feel the chill down COMMUNITY my spine every time I think VOICE about it,” Cleveland said. Carol Unable to cope, he stopped caring about his life. Simler “I became angry and mad at the world. I turned to alcohol and drugs, which caused me to lose everything – my home, my family – and I ended up in prison. I could not handle the pain and walked around homeless for many years.” Cleveland said the turning point in his life was DuPagePads. In addition to basic needs like food and shelter, DuPagePads connected him with a case manager who helped him find counseling to deal with his addictions and inner anger while obtaining the needed medication to stay in a stable mental state. Cleveland is now clean; no drugs or alcohol. He was reunited with his children and said the best day of his life was the day he opened the door to his DuPagePads Supportive Housing apartment. “I did not believe this could be my life again.” Last year, DuPagePads Supportive Housing program served 115 individuals, including 34 children. As a result of continued supportive services, 88 percent of those individuals have had a place to call home for a year or longer. Homelessness often causes illnesses and makes existing mental and physical illnesses worse. Supportive Housing apartments, such as Cleveland’s, improve physical and mental health. This in turn reduces the need for expensive inpatient mental health care and hospitalization. Now that Cleveland is in housing and his health has stabilized, he is no longer using emergency rooms or the criminal justice system, which are expensive for taxpayers. More affordable than housing in state hospitals, prisons or nursing homes, Supportive Housing is an investment in our community. With the proposed state budget cuts, funding for this program is in jeopardy. To learn about this issue, visit dupagepads.org. As Cleveland can attest, Supportive Housing ends homelessness. “DuPagePads cared about me. They wanted me to get better, for myself and for my other children. My case managers made me want to be a better person.” “Housing is such a blessing. I feel good about providing a home for my children to visit. One of the biggest changes that people notice about me is that I now smile – life is good now. I want to thank DuPagePads for saving my life.”

SOUND OFF

Don’t thank outgoing COD trustees

In regard to the writer that wants to thank the College of DuPage trustees [Kim] Savage and [Nancy] Svoboda for the service to the College of DuPage, you must kidding! ‌ These two were instrumental in creating the chaos currently taking place, which includes wasteful taxpayer money, embarrassing publicity, investigations into possible wasteful and illegal spending matters by the administration and the very board of trustees ‌ they were part of. Not to mention patterns of behavior by the very president they chose and supported. May I suggest to anyone else that feels they need to thank these individuals and others who served on the board before this last election that they just fade away with their tails between their legs along with Mr. [Robert] Breuder.

Where are the flags on Memorial Day?

The Obamas’ appearances on Letterman a waste of money

Recently, President Obama was on Dave Letterman’s show. Does anyone realize how much taxpayer money is involved when he goes on a talk show? The security, not only for the entire area, but also the audience; the cost of transportation and preparation is all on our taxpayers tab. A few days after he appeared, his wife was on the same show. Why didn’t they appear together? More money wasted on another visit. This spending is unnecessary.

I apologize for only going 40 miles an hour, just 5 [above] the speed limit, only to have drivers tailgate me until they can pass and pick up their habit of driving 45 miles an hour and up. With cars going at this speed it makes it almost impossible to enter or exit the highway not discounting the hazards. This occurs on Ogden Avenue on a daily basis with no police supervision. The same is true on Belmont Road. After the overpass was put into service, there was some surveillance to enforce the 35 mph speed limit, however now 40, 45 and up is the norm with limited enforcement of the speed limit. If the village wants to open[ly] encourage the speeding, just continue to limit police enforcement.

Are headphones harming your hearing? SPONSORED BY

By Gina Kraman Earbuds and headphones may look tiny and harmless, but because they nestle so close to the eardrum, they can produce a sound level beyond a safe level -- even equal to a diesel truck. However, when headphones are used at about half their potential volume, and for a limited time, researchers say they’re safe, according to Parenting.co.uk: “Boston Children’s Hospital determined that listening to a portable music player with headphones at 60 percent of its potential volume for one hour a day is relatively safe.” Experts at Aurora Health Care in Wisconsin however have reported diagnosing more noise-induced hearing loss in younger patients. They add that the type of device used – headphones, which consist of small speakers worn over the ear, or earbuds, inserted directly into the ear – doesn’t effect the hearing outcome. The important factor: volume control. An easy guide: use half volume.

Luckily, some over-the-ear headphones are becoming even safer. Parenting.co reports, “Passive acoustic limiting technology is beginning to appear more readily on children’s headphones, which is a form of protection that pulls volume back.” Headphones specifically designed for children usually fit better than adult models, as the headband size is adjustable to a smaller head, and the earcup size is suited for youngsters’ ears. Standard-sized earbuds are typically too large for them. Some sound aficionados recommend buying more expensive earbuds, as they may improve sound quality at lower volumes. Ear-Buds.org says: “Many earbuds advertise specifications of 110 decibels. A dance club is 110 decibels. There is no reason to blast music in your ear canal as such a high volume. Mistreatment of sound comes from poor quality earbuds. When you buy a better pair, you can hear beautiful tones at ridiculously lower volumes.”

COLLEGE OF DUPAGE BOARD | 5 THINGS TO KNOW

In a marathon five-hour meeting that featured divided votes on almost every issue on what became a nearly 20-item agenda, the College of DuPage Board of Trustees tackled a wide range of topics May 21.

1. Board gives itself more power

2. Consent agenda axed

Much of the meeting was spent talking about items that, according to the agenda, weren’t planned to have been discussed. After board Vice Chairwoman Deanne Mazzochi and Secretary Frank Napolitano voiced concerns about

all but two topics on the eight-item consent agenda – which is intended for items considered routine by the board that do not require a separate vote or discussion – trustees chose to vote on each item individually. Mazzochi said after the meeting she objected to the level of detail presented for the items, calling specifically for public bidding information and program goals in each purchase proposal. She said she was surprised staff hadn’t been asked for the requested details before and that there was a “learning curve” for staff to adjust to the new postelection board. “I would hope that the administration is going to be more detailed in the information they give not just merely to the trustees but to the public … so that everybody has the ability to view this information in advance and can genuinely vet the decisions that the administration is making,” she said.

3. No long-range plan?

While it wasn’t up for a vote, the agenda included an item about the college’s strategic long-range plan, aimed at creating goals and a policy direction for the school’s future. However, Hamilton urged her fellow trustees to consider not moving forward with a plan until after the school implemented other policy changes and went through a state policy and financial audit. “I believe it is not the time to adopt it,” she said. “I, for one, do not envision any further development of a plan until many open questions at COD are resolved. Our strategic plan for the time being has to be identify, repair and transform.”

WMP

The board took measures to distance itself from the college president’s office, increase self-policing and up the amount of potential control it has over the school and its administration. Trustees approved a series of changes to board policies 6-1, with Erin Birt dissenting. Many centered on placing the president’s office below the board and include: • Specifying the president’s organization and management of the college be under board direction • Mandating a minimum annual performance evaluation for the president • Requiring board approval for all procedures under the president’s oversight • Allowing board modification or revocation of those procedures • Removing the president from agenda preparation • Placing the board chairwoman in charge of maintaining closed-session recordings. The trustees also greenlighted the provision of board office space and the requirement of board approval for any trustee reimbursements exceeding $335 in any fiscal year and empowered its members to become a more influential part of the long-range planning process. “We are charged with policy here on this board,” Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton said. “Our job is to give a structure. And we pass on the implementation of that to the president and the president in turn creates policies with staff and faculty, and in the past, … the board has not been able to reach down and correct problems as readily as needed.”

4. Birt (mostly) stonewalls board

Former board chairwoman Birt largely continued her streak of opposition. Before leaving the meeting early because of a schedule conflict, she voted against or abstained from nearly all the items the board considered. Birt also was not in attendance for the May 14 special meeting because of a schedule conflict and led fellow returning trustees Joseph Wozniak and Dianne McGuire in a uniform no-vote protest April 30, saying the agenda was compiled without the consent of the entire board.

One of the items taken off the consent agenda was the purchase of $31,213.72 for 59 firearms for the Homeland Security Training Institute. Although some trustees and members of the public called the pricing into question, institute Associate

Dean Thomas Brady said staff requested several “brand-name” guns – 24 Colt M4 carbines and 24 Glock .40-caliber handguns – to align with what many local law enforcement officers use, as well as 11 more Smith & Wesson handguns for public use at the institute gun range. The motion passed 4-3, with Birt, Mazzochi and Napolitano against, and the latter two citing spending as a concern.

GAME REPORT RED STARS VS. FC KANSAS CITY SAT. MAY 23

Red Stars Roll on in 2-1 Away Win over Defending Champs

Copyright Daniel Bartel

Chicago, Illinois – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars remained undefeated against defending champions FC Kansas City on Saturday, bagging a 2-1 away win in the highly-anticipated blockbuster clash of the weekend. Sofia Huerta scored in her third consecutive match and defender Taryn Hemmings had the late game-winner for the visitors in meeting that had been delayed due to inclement weather and was played in pouring rain that didn’t let up at any point during the 90 minutes. Chicago nearly conceded a goal in the 7th minute, as shot-stopper Michele Dalton breathed a sigh of relief after being pressured by Sarah Hagen and attempting a clearance that bounced off the FCKC forward and rolled just wide of the right post. The Red Stars created their first quality chance in the 32nd minute. With a defender wrestling her for the ball, Arin Gilliland managed to sprint to the by-line and send in a low cross that was touched on frame by Jen Hoy and parried wide by goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart. Chicago would get on the board mere moments later, Vanessa DiBernardo swinging in a corner kick from the right that would see the 23-yearold earn her league-leading fourth assist. The ball was met inside the penalty are by rookie Huerta, who redirected it through traffic and inside the left post courtesy of an exquisite touch with her right foot. Huerta’s fifth strike of the season sent the reigning NWSL Player of the Week to the top of the NWSL goal-scoring charts, where she is tied with Washington’s Crystal Dunn. Home side Kansas City had a promising opportunity of its own in the closing stages, as a long ball long through ball released Hagen and the forward released a powerful, right-footed attempt from the top of the box that whistled wide of the far post. U.S. international Hagen continued to threaten adno=S0254466

after the break, making a strong near-post run in the 52nd minute to get her foot on a cross from the right flank, only to see her redirect roll trickle just wide of the left post. Kansas City kept up the pressure and could have scored on either of a pair of 56th-minute cornes, the second of which saw Hagen smash the ball dangerously over the bar on a close-range volley at the far post. FCKC finally drew level in the 68th minute, Erika Tymrak sending in another corner from the left and fellow U.S. international Amy LePeilbet back-tracking to head the ball down and past surprised goalkeeper Dalton for a well-taken goal. The Red Stars showed a strong response to the equalizer, as Head Coach Rory Dames’ managed to keep their mighty opponents from taking control of the match and pushing for the lead. Instead, defender Hemmings gave Chicago all three points by nodding home the rebound following a Danielle Colaprico corner kick from the left and a header by center back Michelle Lomnicki that had been tipped against the post by netminder Barnhart. Kansas City’s only quality look in the closing stages was a Yael Averbuch rocket on a free-kick from 35 yards out, the Red Stars’ Dalton doing well to leave her feet and tip the ball over the frame. It would be the game’s final chance, as the visitors subsequently slowed down the pace and held on to a crucial victory that saw them increase their lead at the top of the NWSL standings. The Chicago Red Stars look to remain unbeaten through seven regular season games when they travel to take on current Shield holders Seattle Reign FC on Saturday, May 30. The club’s next home match is on June 20 against Washington Spirit. By Denise Freese Fundraising for charities goes on year-round, with holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving being especially popular. Companies, churches and individuals all do their part to collect food, clothing, toys, and donations for families in need. Similarly, donations are collected throughout the year for many different charities affiliated with medical concerns; cancer, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, and many more. Celebrity Dance Studio has been an active member of the community for many years, and has created an annual month-long Spring Festival, each May, to raise funds and awareness for a special cause; this year they are supporting the American Cancer Society.

The Spring Festival consists of four parties during the month. It’s a friendly competition among the dance instructors, whose students earn points (from donations) to help them to victory. Each weekly party has a theme, and students and staff dress up and enjoy theme-related food and games. Parties are open to all; you don’t have to be a current student to attend. The next upcoming party is “The Modern and Futuristic Age on May 30 from 7-9 pm. To celebrate the conclusion of the Festival, members of Celebrity Dance will participate in the Relay For Life on May 29, at Ty Warner Park in Westmont. Come join them for their parties and for the Relay For Life, and help some wonderful charities!

Resources to help older smokers quit By Melissa Erickson More Content Now

ransitioning to a senior living community can be filled with mixed emotions from everyone involved. You may have many questions. Is it really necessary at this time? Will we get the help and care from the staff when we need it? Will my loved one like the other residents and make new friends...? The answer to all these questions is yes. New friends are made all the time. We witness it every day here at Lexington Square. Most caring communities take time to ensure their caregivers are extremely helpful and at your service. It’s stressful and difficult for a love one to accept that they need more help with daily activities. They often feel a sense of loss. They’re experiencing loss of independence, loss of their home, and loss of the ability to perform basic tasks. It’s best to respect these new emotions, and be sympathetic to their situation. Fear of the unknown can intensify any other emotions they have. Over time, as they adjust, these emotions often turn to joy and excitement as they experience how beneficial community life can be. Discover more about what to expect during a transition and important questions to ask the communities you’re considering. New Solutions to your Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

Neuropathy Recovery I Workshop

FREE

f you suffer from a single one of these torturous symptoms- numbness, tingling, burning or sharp nerve pain, then read on. A new breakthrough treatment could change your life. Neuropathy can affect every part of your life - walking, sitting, sleeping, socializing, your ability to enjoy your relationships and so much more. If you have tired “everything” (Anodyne therapy, physical therapy, Lyrica, Neurotin or other meds) without getting the results you want then this may be the most important information that you ever read. There is a simple reason that most treatments fail, because at best they only cover up your symptoms and do not help your damaged nerves. Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that affects people in every walk of life. It is estimated that 20 million Americans and 60% of diabetics suffer from this disorder. There are many kinds of neuropathy, the symptoms of which include burning, tingling, weakness, numbness, paralysis, and dull to excruciating pain - especially in the hands and feet. Although many neuropathies have no known causes, neuropathy is often associated with other conditions. Examples are: Diabetes, shingles, toxins, autoimmune disorders, bulging discs that compress on nerves, spinal stenosis, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and poor nutrition. Statin drugs and chemotherapy can also cause neuropathy. For the last three years Dr. Susan Kelenyi, DC of Glen Ellyn, IL has worked extensively with peripheral neuropathy patients. Dr. Kelenyi describes peripheral neuropathy as damage to the nerves, which transmits information from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. “This can result in pain, loss of feeling, and inability to control muscles, such as difficulty with walking. As with any other condition, there is no “one size fits all” remedy for those suffering from neuropathies and treatment may vary depending on the cause and severity.” However, many individuals can and do find relief using natural remedies. And this is where Dr. Kelenyi steps in. Of the many causes of peripheral neuropathies”, says Dr. Kelenyi, “ a major one comes from a metabolic condition. You cannot drug your way out of a metabolic condition. It requires a change in lifestyle.” Dr. Kelenyi says, “Diet is crucial when addressing peripheral neuropathy, especially in diabetics and autoimmune disorders. Harmful foods to be avoided include alcohol, sugar, processed foods, fast foods, junk foods, sodas of all types, foods sprayed with pesticides, and trans-fatty acids. Sweeteners and additives contained in diet soda and processed foods such as MSG and aspartame can negatively impact the nervous system.” As a Board Eligible Chiropractic Neurologist, Dr. Kelenyi performs specific metabolic and neurologic tests to help determine what is causing the problem. There are a few primary types of neuropathies: Large or small diameter or both as well as motor. If jerking is involved then it can be as much a problem in the brain due to trans-neural degeneration as it is in the peripheral nerve. A thorough and comprehensive exam ensures an accurate diagnosis. Dr. Kelenyi states that her peripheral neuropathy recovery program is a combination of different cutting edge techniques and protocols. “We use revolutionary breakthrough protocols in the treatment of Peripheral Neuropathy… one of the therapies offered is Horizontal Therapy which is the latest, breakthrough in the science of electro-medicine and the most advanced and effective form of bioelectric treatment available to date. I’m very proud to be the first in the area to offer this to my patients ...pain management without drugs or surgery to get lasting results.” Additional therapies may include: oxygen, vibration, spinal decompression, cold laser therapy along with brain balance therapies to create a layered approach to “wake up” the nerves so they can function again and re-educate nerve pathways that have gone “hay-wire”. Dr. Kelenyi says, “Our solutions are non-drug, non-surgical approaches, that are researched based and based on prior clinical success. The reason we achieve excellent outcomes is because we take both a metabolic and neurological approach in our program.” She says it’s a very rewarding way of practicing. “We get chronically ill people coming from all over the Chicagoland area, even out of state, to our clinic. The most important thing for these patients is results. We get results.”

TUESDAY, JUNE 2ND AT 11:00AM

Ask yourself… • Has your condition affected every part of your life? • Have you tried “everything” (Anodyne therapy, physical therapy, Lyrica®, Neurotin®, or other medications) without getting the results you want? • Do you suffer with other secondary symptoms such as falling, dexterity, muscle atrophy, etc.? • Would you rather ix the underlying problem rather than cover it up with drugs?

Topics to be discussed • What is and what are the main causes for Peripheral Neuropathy • Diabetes & Peripheral Neuropathy • If you are taking “statin” drugs - what your doctor doesn’t tell you could hurt you • If your nerves are damaged what does that mean for the rest of your body • Why your lab results do not tell the whole story • How you can live pain free with a clinically proven program

Survey: For single women, 55 is the new 35 By Melissa Erickson More Content Now

orget the adage “Youth is wasted on the young”; today’s single, female baby boomers are happy, confident and healthy. Seventy-six percent of single women over 55 feel younger than their age, according a survey by retirement community homebuilder Del Webb. Seventy-four percent of respondents said they’re as happy, or happier, than they were at age 35, and nearly half (45 percent) believe their best years are yet to come. In fact, more than one in five (22 percent) say they feel more attractive than they did at 35. Highest obesity rates Recent data from the Trust for America’s Health showed that the baby boom generationis the most obese of any age group. According to the study, in 17 states more than 35 percent of boomers are obese, and in 41 states, more than 30 percent of boomers are obese. “While baby boomers are living longer these days, they may be living sicker,” said national health expert Dr. Lori Shemek. “Boomers’ attention to looks bypassed their attention to their weight’ leading to a generation that is living longer, but sicker.”

Eat more greens Something as easy as adding more greens to your diet could help slow cognitive decline and improve memory, according to new research. “With baby boomers approaching old age, there is huge public demand for lifestyle behaviors that can ward off loss of memory and other cognitive abilities with age,” said Martha Clare Morris, assistant provost for community research at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. “Our study provides evidence that eating green leafy vegetables and other foods rich in vitamin K, lutein and beta-carotene can help to keep the brain healthy to preserve functioning.” Reasons to not retire Baby boomers are changing retirement, according to a recent study by the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies. Sixty-five percent of boomers plan to work past age 65 or do not plan to retire. Slightly more than half (52 percent) plan to continue working after they retire. Given widespread savings shortfalls, it is not surprising that 62 percent of the boomers surveyed who plan to work in retirement and/or past age 65 indicate that their main reason is income or health benefits. What is surprising is that 34 percent plan to work for enjoyment, including 18 percent who want to stay involved and 16 percent who enjoy what they do.

hearing devices decreasing in size, many now have the ability to pair with phones and televisions via Bluetooth technology. “Many people fear the stigma of having hearing issues, but our solutions are very discrete,” Rogan says. It is recommended that anyone with a family history of hearing issues schedule a check-up. Rogan says that a common indication of hearing issues is when members of the family begin complaining. “Most people simply don’t know what they don’t hear,” Rogan says. “It’s important for people to not fear the screening process because early intervention always has a better outcome.” With a long history of helping others in the area Rogan looks to continue providing modern hearing solutions for the residents of the area. “I really like it here,” Rogan says. “I get a lot of enjoyment out of helping others improve their lives through our services.” The Susan Rogan Hearing centers are located at 419 N. Annie Carlson runs in the finals of the 100-meter hurdles May 23 at the state track and field meet at Eastern Illinois University. Carlson was second in the race and earned four medals at the meet. She tied her own school triple jump record of 36 feet, 5 inches as she took third in that event at state. She was ninth overall after the preliminary flights. “Triple jump I made finals ninth place so I really had to focus on getting a good first jump so I could relax and work on getting better, but my first jump was my [personal record] and it put me into third,” Carlson said. The final event of the state meet and her high school career was the 200 dash, where she clocked a 26.42 to finish seventh. It wasn’t her best time (she has a school-record

time of 25.80), but she had no complaints about earning another state medal. “It wasn’t my best time in the 200, but ... after a day in the sun and three events later I’m just happy I made the podium because the beginning of the season I didn’t think I was going to make the 200 podium,” Carlson said. “I’m just really happy with that.” Kayla Weatherly (discus) and the 4x800 relay team of Halle Nash, Lily Arndt, Lisa Niemiec and Peyton Nash also were state qualifiers.

Sports Editor Jason Rossi contributed to this report.

Even after a Downers Grove South corner kick sailed through the goal mouth and seemingly out of danger, Ava Porlier and Meghan Riordan didn’t quit on the play. Riordan kept the ball alive near the sideline and fed it to Porlier, who tapped it in for what stood up as the game-winning goal as the Mustangs won their first regional title since finishing third in the state in 2012. Porlier, the Sears Appliance & Hardware Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life Sports Editor Jason Rossi about her game-winning goal, the Mustangs once again winning a regional title and what the rest of the playoffs might have in store.

and I had complete trust that Meghan was going to get that ball and send a perfect cross, and a thing like that you have to capitalize on, and luckily we did.

CHARLESTON – When Annie Carlson left the state meet May 23, she could be identified by the distinct sound of medals clanging against each other. After all, Carlson had four of them around her neck at the end of a busy day at Eastern Illinois University for the Westmont junior. “Each event, I had to focus on something every single time so I had to clear my mind every time before each race,” Carlson said. “For the 300 [-meter hurdles] I wanted to break 44 [seconds], which didn’t really happen, but it was still good. I really had to focus on a lot of stuff today.” Carlson finished second in Class 1A in the 300 hurdles in 44.59 seconds, and she also was second in the 100 hurdles in 15.03, which might have been her best event of the day. “For the second place 100s I was really happy,” Carlson said. “I [set a new personal record], new school record. Really everything went well for that. I really wanted to break 15 seconds and get into the 14s, but I’m still really happy with how that went.” Carlson scored all 26 points in the finals for Westmont, which finished tied for sixth in the team standings. Carlson will graduate next year as the most decorated girls track athlete for Westmont with six all-state medals. She also holds the school outdoor track records in the 100 and 300 hurdles, the 200 dash and the triple jump.

Power surge sends Sentinels to sectional By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Anthony Powers lived up to his last name, and so did some of his Westmont baseball teammates. Powers was one of three Sentinels to hit home runs in a 6-5 win against Lisle in the championship game of the Class 2A Timothy Christian regional May 23. “I think we just came in looking to square the ball and get a piece of it, and it just worked for us,” Powers said. “He’s a great pitcher, but we just had our day.” Powers hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, the second in the inning for the Sentinels (28-8) following Charlie Donovan’s solo home run to start the frame. Kyle Domin hit a solo home run deep to left field to lead off Westmont’s half of the third. The victory set a new school record for wins in a season and lifted the Sentinels to their second consecutive regional title and fifth overall in program history. Westmont plays North Shore Country Day in a sectional semifinal at Benedictine University at 6:30 p.m. May 27. “It feels awesome,” Powers said of winning the regional. “I thought we could do it all the way, I just didn’t think it would feel this great.” Westmont led 6-1 after five but had to hold off a rally that saw Lisle (12-17) score two runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings. An intentional walk put Lisle runners and first at second with two outs in the seventh before Westmont catcher Joe Donovan chased down a dropped third strike and threw to Andrew Rosol for the final out of the game. “I could not tell how close it was,” Westmont head coach DJ Cocks said of the final play. “I saw [the ump call

“It feels awesome. I thought we could do it all the way, I just didn’t think it would feel this great.” Anthony Powers Westmont senior him out] and I that was it. It was a great catch by Rosol and a great throw by Joe, oh my goodness. It got pretty far away from him and that is not an easy play. I’m just glad I have the best catcher in the state, in my opinion, to make that throw and Rosol just reached up to make that catch. “There was plenty of opportunities they had to take it from us, and fortunately for us we played great D.” Last season, Westmont won the same regional and eventually went to the state finals. Lisle won the regional the year before that and claimed the state title. Surviving the regional is something Cocks doesn’t take for granted. “It is a tough regional. I knew every single team in this regional ... had a shot at beating us,” Cocks said. “It’s a great regional and we’re fortunate to get out of this.”

Westmont girls stay calm, move on to sectional By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – Emily Whitburn was used sparingly in the regular season for Westmont’s softball team, but when her number was called the sophomore came through. Whitburn got on base in the sixth inning and later scored the game-tying run on Skyler Poel’s single as the Sentinels topped Lisle 3-2 in a Class 2A regional championship game May 23. “It was a little slapped down the left field line, and we were able to make

the most of it,” Westmont head coach Jason Bolden said. It was the Sentinels’ second consecutive regional title, setting up a sectional semifinal showdown against IC Catholic at 6 p.m. May 27 at Benedictine University. Though Lisle had its share of struggles during the regular season, Westmont (22-9) knew it would have its hands full in the regional title game. Yet, a young Sentinel squad that has 11 freshmen or sophomores on the roster never saw their confidence waver and eventually won the game with a

walk-off walk in the bottom of the seventh. “Lisle always comes to play,” Bolden said. “I think we maybe came out a little bit tight, but as the game went on we calmed down. I felt like we always believed we would win the game. We’ve been in tight games all year long, and we believed in ourselves to get the job done.” In addition to Whitburn’s key hit and run and Poel’s RBI hit, Alix Mendoza had a pair of hits and pitcher Kristen Skala kept Lisle off balance for much of the game. The Sentinels topped IC 2-0 in a sec-

tional final last season. The Knights come into the game with a 25-5 record and with a stud pitcher in the form of Northern Illinois recruit Jessica Conenna. Bolden, for one, expects another close game akin to last year’s playoff matchup. “Both teams know a lot about each other even though we didn’t play each other this season,” Bolden said. “They’d love to beat us and move on, and we’d love to do the same. Our kids are excited to play this game. It could go either way, and hopefully we come out on top.”
