WESTMONT – As one Burgess Square Healthcare Centre resident flipped through the pages of a book, the words and illustrations on each page brought tears to her eyes as she read memories from her life as told by fourth- and fifth-grade students from a Westmont school. About 45 Maercker Intermediate School students in Kathleen Massoth’s fourth-grade class and Kierstyn Hacker’s fifth-grade class created biographies of 10 residents at Burgess Square in Westmont. On May 19, the students gave the finished biographies – which were printed as magazine-sized, fully bound hardcover books – to residents as wrapped gifts during an event at the center. “The look on the residents’ faces was so happy and you could tell it definitely made their day,” Hacker said. “The kids were genuinely proud of Photo provided their work and the residents loved the Burgess Square resident Shirley Fisher peruses her biography, which was compiled by a books.”

Q: Are there any alternatives to the dark material dentists generally use for fillings? A: Indeed there are. Over the years, the traditional filling materials have been gold, porcelain, and silver amalgam, which is the dark material you reference in your question. Amalgam is made up of mercury, silver, tin, zinc, and copper. There also are tooth-colored glass and plastic materials called composite resin fillings. The location of the tooth, the extent of decay in it, cost and other considerations are factors you’ll need to discuss with your dentist when deciding how to proceed and determining which filling material is most appropriate. Composites are not only cosmetically preferable to metal amalgams, they actually make the filled tooth stronger because they bond to the tooth and give it a higher structural integrity.
Subscription rates Single copy Delivery (annual)

After the dentist removes the decay from the tooth, he or she will apply the tooth-colored material in layers, and using a special light, will harden – a process called curing – each layer as applied. Finally, the dentist will shape the material as desired and polish the finished work. Another benefit to the composite filling is that since there is no metal in it, the tooth will be less sensitive to hot and cold. So talk with your dentist about your options when you need to have a tooth filled.

Westmont Junior High group excels in global competition
to participate in, including structural engineering, technical, fine arts and scientific. The Westmont group chose the structural challenge and had to
build the lightest structure possible that withstood the weight of a pressure board while parts of the structure were removed. They also had to put on a short play that tells a story of how something is transformed. In Westmont’s case, their structure was a 12 inch-tall, 3 inch-wide rectangular prism that was built with balsa wood. Their story was about how an animal transformed. Westmont earned high scores because their structure didn’t break when parts were removed. Anika Bhoopalam, 13, loved seeing all the different countries and what their teams made. The seventh-grader said she learned there can be several different ways to solve problems. “If one solution doesn’t work, you can modify it to make it work,” she said. “All the team members have input and we combine everyone’s ideas to come up with a better solution. I think [placing 10th] makes our school proud, and I like representing our school.” While Westmont Junior High didn’t sponsor the team, they did provide some financial support that went toward their competition and travel expenses. The principal recognized each student on the team with a certificate and honored them at a recent school board meeting. “Destination Imagination is an after-school activity and isn’t part of the school’s curriculum,” said Martha Walker, Stephanie’s mother and one the team’s managers. “But for some of the teams we competed against, it
is part of the curriculum. But we beat those schools, and we don’t have the same resources as everyone else.” Martha Walker said the group has been working together on a Destination Imagination team since second grade and has been working on the structural challenge since last fall. She explained the team managers cannot help the students with their challenge, but can only facilitate. She said all the ideas and solutions are completely up to the students. Martha Walker said she was “so proud” of the team’s accomplishment and was fascinated by what the group was able to come up with. “It was such a surprise,” she said of the 10th place finish. “I wasn’t sure how we’d do because this is our first time at globals. These kids do marvelous things with this program. My daughter has learned a lot, and it’s helped her with her school work.” Sudha Bhoopalam, Anika’s mother, is the other team manager and has been involved with Destination Imagination for about 10 years. She likes how the program teaches children teamwork, creativity and problem-solving. “This experience has been wonderful,” she said. “The most eye-opening was to see how the kids think and process information. Kids don’t have the boundaries that adults have. They’re ready to experiment with any problem that they’re given.” For information on Destination Imagination, visit www.destinationimagination.org.
Funds from the grant were put toward publishing and purchasing copies of the biographies. The biography project began in October shortly after the grant was received. Students from the two classes worked in groups of four or five to create one biography for a designated resident. To gather information for the biographies, the classes walked to Burgess Square and spent an hour of the school day getting to know residents. Students interviewed the residents, captured responses with iPads and worked with them to complete crafts, Massoth said. The students visited Burgess Square two additional times to gather information. During these visits, Massoth said she and Hacker were amazed by what transpired. “The kids were very nervous at first talking to seniors, but once time moved on, they would initiate the conversation and would ask questions, and we saw some kids just blossom,” Massoth said. “When we would come back [to the classroom] they were just bursting to tell what they had learned
about their resident, so it was very fun to see.” The two classes also met about once a week, during which time the groups put their notes into narrative form and drew illustrations, which were then uploaded to an online computer program used to put the biographies into book format. Hacker said the biographies were each about 10 pages long. Westmont resident Angie Anguiano, a student in Massoth’s class, said her favorite part of the project was getting to know someone new and working with her classmates. She especially enjoyed hearing a story about Burgess Square resident Shirley Fisher’s dog, which was taken many miles away but found its way home after a year. “I learned that socializing with people is fun and great and writing books about them is even more work,” Anguiano said. “But it makes people happy, and I learned you should have emotions and care for other people.” Fisher and fellow resident Jayme Hail both said they enjoyed spending time with the children and telling them their stories and that they were
touched by the biographies. They were each impressed with how much work the students put into the biographies, and how well they worked with one another. “They made each book with their whole heart,” Fisher said. “They were so kind to us and for me, well, I love kids and that was so wonderful just to be with them and I’ll never forget them. They just really put a spot in my heart.” Hail said the students especially enjoyed hearing about her grandchildren and dedication to various types of puzzles. She and Fisher agreed the experience will allow students to be more comfortable with older individuals. “They saw canes and wheelchairs and were not afraid of them and came right up, and that means a lot, they didn’t ask why,” Hail said. “The only time I cried was because they were happy tears and I guess it’s because they spent so much time on [the biography] and were so proud of it.” Massoth and Hacker plan to conduct the biography project again with future classes.
By AIMEE BARROWS editorial@mysuburbanlife.com WESTMONT – Stephanie Walker, 12, jumped up and down and screamed at the top of her lungs when she saw her team took 10th place at the Destination Imagination Global Competition last month. “I couldn’t believe it,” the seventh-grader at Westmont Junior High School said. “We put in a lot of work, as a team and individually. I was so excited to get our school’s name out there, so all the other countries know us now.” Stephanie is one of seven Westmont Junior High students who participated on the Destination Imagination team. The team took 10th place out of 87 teams from around the world at the global competition May 20 to 23 at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. They competed against teams from China, Canada, Mexico and Brazil, as well as several other U.S. teams. Westmont placed the highest among the teams from Illinois. Destination Imagination is a worldwide nonprofit organization that provides project-based education to students from elementary school through college. According to its website, Destination Imagination’s mission is to “inspire and equip students to become the next generation of innovators and leaders.” Students are presented with various challenges and need to find solutions. The teams can choose one of several categories

Continued from page 2 During the event, the students read the biographies to residents and shared what they had learned from the project with attendees, who also included family members of the students and residents. After sharing snacks, the students reluctantly said goodbye to the residents, according to Massoth. “It was an absolutely amazing experience and the kids took so much from it,” Massoth said. “We checked off a ton of standards and went far beyond academics – communication skills, listening skills, interviewing and asking questions, leading a conversation, teamwork.” Hacker learned about the biography project through a service learning class she took during the summer, she said. She and Massoth applied for a Schools and Community Outreach by Educators grant from the Illinois Education Association with the idea and received an $800 grant in October of last year.

WESTMONT – Joe Lesczynski loves a good challenge. Lesczynski, a floral designer and general manager of Phillip’s Flowers & Gifts Design Center in Westmont, will be one of nine competing in the eighth annual Iron Designer competition June 9 in Chicago. He has been in the floral business more than 40 years and has owned three floral shops but now focuses his time and attention on the center in Westmont. Lesczynski of Willowbrook believes competing at Iron Designer will benefit the center and his employees. “I feel in my heart that I will win this competition, and if I don’t win I look forward to learning from new people,” he said. “I’ll be able to take an aspect of floral design and turn it into something new. I can take those ideas and bring them back to my shop to improve upon designs.” Iron Designer is part of the annual International Floriculture Expo. The
expo features vendors displaying floral products and designs in order to spark new ideas and communication among florists. It is making its Chicago debut June 8 to 10 at McCormick Place south of downtown. For the first time, the expo will partner with United Fresh, a produce association, and FMI Connect, a food marketing institute. The collaboration is intended to unite the floral and freshfood industries, according to a news release about the event. The theme of this year’s competition is “Fusion of Produce and Floral,” and the Iron Designer contestants will be incorporating fresh produce into their arrangements. The designers will not know what type of produce or flowers they will be working with until the start of the 30-minute competition. “The inclusion of produce adds a new twist to the competition this year,” event manager Christine Salmon said in the release. “The designers are topnotch, so we know their arrangements will be one-of-a kind and the epitome of fresh in all that it represents.”

Nonprofit to help keep senior services going As a member of the 50plus category, I can say my perspective about aging has dramatically shifted as each decade has passed me by. Looking around me, I am constantly inspired by those who are older than me, who live life with tremendous passion and energy. Those lively examples are one of the many reasons I am excited about the newly formed nonprofit, Friends for Downers Grove Township Senior Citizens. Downers Grove Township has always been about serving more than 146,000 residents, no matter the age. We are all getting older. Of all of the townships in DuPage County, our township has the second highest percentage of residents ages 65 and older. Knowing the percentage will continue to grow, we want to make sure we are able to not only sustain services for those individuals but also have the capacity to address other needs. That vision is one of the reasons that the township sought to create this nonprofit, giving us the ability to reach into the community and partner with others who share a similar vision and passion for serving seniors. We are proud of those members of the community who have gladly joined our organization, stepping into a variety of roles to support the mission of Friends for Downers Grove Township Senior Citizens. As the organization continues to grow, we will make more and more connections with communi-
COMMUNITY VOICE Lori Wrzesinski ty partners whose focus is investing in the lives of senior residents. These partnerships will support our mission to foster the independence and well-being of older adults. We want to enhance their quality of life by acting as a resource for education and information as well as funding programs and services. We look forward to finding new opportunities to support and enhance the lives of the residents of Downers Grove Township through this organization. If you want more information about how you can be of support, give us a call at 630-719-6689 and we’ll be happy to talk to you. We also have a website under construction at www.friendsfordgtownshipseniors.org. Downers Grove Township will continue making these connections with local organizations where we feel we can be most effective. We are proud of this current effort and of those who have stepped into leadership to create an organization that can have a far-reaching impact. It is a pleasure to serve all of our residents. Heroin’s deadly reign affects us all It’s easy to think of heroin addiction as something that happens to other people, other families. Especially if you and your children have made it through the teen years and early adulthood without coming under the thumb of addiction. But even if no one in your immediate circle had even tried heroin, it still affects you in ways that are almost impossible to see. Maybe your favorite cashier at the grocery store just isn’t there one day, and you never know why. Maybe a local business you frequent shuts down out of the blue. Maybe a friend or a colleague becomes distant for no apparent reason, no longer hosts gatherings, no longer talks with pride about what the kids are doing. Cook and DuPage counties have seen a decline in heroin-related deaths thanks to the use of Narcan to combat overdoses. From 46 deaths in 2013, to 33 last year, DuPage County is on track for about 27 this year. Cook County’s drop was less significant, from 275 in 2013 to 283 in 2014. Regardless, if those declines are because of the success of Narcan, then it means that
Suburban Life Media Editorial Board Laura Burke, Dave Lemery, Matt Hendrickson, Anna Schier, Alex Soulier, Mary Beth Versaci
VIEWS Dave Lemery the root problem – the use of heroin – may not have subsided at all. And there are many terrible outcomes for a heroin addict other than death. If your child is still in high school, but you know he or she is “one of the good kids” and would never use any kind of drugs, consider this: Every student in every high school knows who the “bad kids” are. If your model student has a weak moment, how hard would it be to get a hold of something truly devastating? I’m not looking to incite fear or convince every parent that their child is a secret dope fiend. Far from it. The miracle is that most teens, knowing full well how they could get their hands on some truly toxic substances, choose not to do so at a time in their life when they’ve got all kinds of pressures pushing them to make bad decisions. These are just a few of the obvious ways that heroin abuse continues to affect all
of us. And it’s going to continue to do so for a long time. That’s why Suburban Life has launched a new home online to collect our coverage of the heroin crisis in the suburbs. Visit and bookmark www.mysuburbanlife.com/ heroin to keep informed about what’s going on across the Chicago area. You’ll find stories about people who’ve been arrested, about families trying to make sense of lost loved ones, about government officials and police departments trying to find a way to make headway against this scourge. What we hope most is that as time goes by, you’ll find less and less news posted to the page as the heroin crisis recedes. But we know that isn’t going to happen anytime soon. In the meantime, we’ll continue to talk about the folks who are grappling with this issue. Because the sooner we accept that this is a problem that we all share, the sooner we’ll find solutions.

SOUND OFF
Ride fares should pay for public transit maintenance
U. S. Rep. Dan Lipinski may have no ill will toward the public, but like all politicians, he’s not telling the whole story. Upkeep of the public transportation system ‌ is the responsibility of the transit companies and is worked into the fare you pay to ride the bus or train. Over the years, more and more maintenance was deferred in favor of bigger and bigger salaries for the administrators of the transit companies. ‌ Don’t be fooled, transit riders, you already paid for maintenance. Don’t let politicians tell you that you need to pay yet a second time for the same maintenance that you have already paid for with your fare to ride.

Westmont, please bring back branch pickup on our parkways. With all the storms, we have lots of broken branches to deal with. It’s a real hardship to cut up these branches, tie them in bundles and then lug them to our alleys, which are too narrow to begin with. Senior citizens are finding it impossible to handle. Why not limit the pickup to maybe twice a season? It would help.

Red Stars Remain Unbeaten with 0-0 Draw in Seattle Seattle, Wash. – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars stayed undefeated in their first seven matches of the season courtesy of a hard-fought scoreless draw with home side and Shield holders Seattle Reign FC. Head Coach Rory Dames’ squad earned the valuable point behind disciplined team defending and a strong performance by netminder Michele Dalton, whose seven saves saw the 26-year-old earn her second shutout of the 2015 campaign. Seattle controlled possession early on and created the first promising chance in the 13th minute. Reigning league MVP Kim Little sprinted down to the byline on the left side and set up Danielle Foxhoven, whose mishit effort from inside the box found fellow attacker Merritt Mathias. The Alabama native failed to make full contact on the ball, her shot attempt being comfortably stopped by Dalton. Chicago’s Vanessa DiBernardo released a dangerous drive at the other end of the field in the 20th minute, a wicked deflection forcing goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer to leave her feet for a spectacular parry. Red Stars defender Michelle Lomnicki had her side’s best chance of the day on the ensuing DiBernardo corner from the right, as she headed the ball goalward with Kopmeyer out of the net, only to see it dramatically headed off the line by Reign FC’s Elli Reed. The home side had a pair of attempts during the remainder of the opening period, forcing solid saves from Dalton, who did well to avoid giving up rebounds. adno=S0250168
FACEBOOK.COM/CHICAGOREDSTARS
After the break, both teams’ promising attacking efforts were well defended, as the fans had to wait until the 65th minute for another close look. Red Stars midfielder Danielle Colaprico swung in a corner kick from the left and Lomnicki got her head on the ball once more, this time seeing her close-range effort bounce just wide of the left post. Seattle nearly punished the visitors for the missed opportunity eleven minutes later, Mathias firing a rocket off the top the crossbar from a central position just outside the box. The home side would follow up with two more promising looks. First substitute Rachel Corsie’s dangerous 82nd-minute cross from the right flank was redirected just wide of the goal by the foot of a Chicago player, then forward Beverly Yanez beat netminder Dalton to the ball on the ensuing corner, just to see her header land on top of the unguarded frame. It was the final noteworthy opportunity of the match, as the Red Stars successfully fended off some furious Reign FC attacking in the final stages to hold on for a crucial point away from home. The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars look to remain unbeaten through eight regular season games when they travel to take on Western New York Flash on June 6. The club’s next home match is on June 20 against second-place Washington Spirit. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by visiting www.chicagoredstars.com or by calling 773-698-6001.

ABOVE: Back Alley Burger puts an artisan spin on its quest to elevate the burger. In addition to the downtown La Grange home, the eatery also has an Elmhurst location. LEFT: A juicy patty is at the heart of the Make Shroom for Me Burger, a delicious item taken up a notch by a side of sweet potato fries. During my next visit, I decided I wanted to put my red meat cravings on the backseat for the sake of vegetarian readers, and ordered the veggie burger topped with avocado and tomato. Back Alley got points straight away for the clearly house-made patty instead of
the frozen black bean affair found in many places. It had a whole lot of mildly spicy complexity to it, but could have used more sear. I decided to go with the classic onion rings as my side this go-round, and, predictably, they were battered perfectly. Each had a uniform
amount of tasty breading with a nice crunch and plenty of welcome onion flavor. I knew I needed to sample one of the restaurant’s handspun shakes to truly tell the full story. The Nutella version was intensely chocolate and dangerously drinkable as opposed to milk shakes the

A lot of places do a decent burger, and a lot try to push the envelope of what a burger can be. Back Alley definitely does so with success, along with a friendly waitstaff quick to offer a suggestion, and a welcoming interior with rockand-roll appeal. If you’re going to put your burger fate in the hands of anyone, the people at Back Alley should be near the top of the list.

LA GRANGE – Grilling season is here, but consider leaving the burger production to the pros at Back Alley Burger in La Grange. The restaurant is the creation of veteran restaurateurs Mary and Christopher Spagnola of Western Springs, who first met at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco. Their training is a big part of what sets Back Alley Burger apart, and their concept has expanded to a second location in Elmhurst. The pair’s hard-rocking La Grange restaurant has a big but focused menu offering a number of different burgers featuring grass-fed and never frozen beef, plus sandwiches, chili, nitrate-free hot dogs, salads, shakes, beer and wine, all served alongside street art decor and classic rock tunes. Inventive burger toppings and a theme alone do not a quality restaurant make, but, luckily, Back Alley Burger delivers. Though my imagination was caught by the Most Insane-est Hottest Burger Ever-est, filled with such ingredients as habanero jam, fried jalapeños, Thai chili cream cheese and something called Trinidad scorpion sauce, I decided to go with the less threatening Make Shroom for Me Burger. What came out was truly delicious. The patty itself was incredibly juicy without being greasy, and the pretzel bun it came on gave just enough structure to make sure the second half of the burger wasn’t soggy. Though it could have used a bit more of the namesake mushrooms, the grilled onions on top added an appreciated bite to the sandwich. A surprise was the caliber of the sweet potato fries. So many restaurants make a tremendous burger, but serve a pile of over-salted greasy fries alongside it. These were some of the best I’ve ever had. The thin fries had an amazing crispness to them that still had a mind-boggling amount of creamy sweet potato in the middle.

Melvin pitched five innings for the win, scattering five hits, striking out four and allowing just two runs. After finishing third in the state last season the Sentinels saw several seniors graduate, which led some skeptics to doubt they could make another deep playoff run. “A lot of people doubted us with

the senior class we lost last year,” Westmont head coach DJ Cocks said. “That’s one of the things I’m really proud of these guys for is stepping up when everybody thought we weren’t going to get back to where we were.” The sectional title was Westmont’s second straight and third in program history. The win May 30 sent the Sentinels to supersectional, which was back at Benedictine on June 2, and Alexander said the momentum from the sectional win would carry over. “Being a part of it is just a great feeling,” Alexander said. “I don’t think we’re going to be stopping here. ering how young we were,” Poel said of her senior season. “Mr. Bolden was even saying he thought we would be a .500 team and the fact we finished 22-10 is ridiculous, beyond what he expected. We’ve done a lot better than everyone would have guessed. Everyone stepped up and did what they had to do.” Skala and Poel were the battery that powered the Sentinels for four seasons. They will be tough to replace, but they and their senior teammates leave a legacy that will keep Westmont competitive in the future. “It’s mainly just hard work,” Poel said. “They just need to understand you need to have a good morale and not give up even if the odds are against you. That’s what we’re trying to pass on to them.” “Our four seniors were fantastic kids,” Bolden said. “They really showed people what kind of commitment you need to be successful here.”
Clevenger medals at state track; Westmont’s Dea closes career in finals CHARLESTON – Ryan Clevenger said his coach accurately predicted how the Class 3A 1,600-meter run would play out at the IHSA state meet May 30. And after the dust had settled from the fast-paced race, the Downers Grove North senior had added another allstate medal to his collection with a fourth-place finish. “My coach told me the exact way it would go,” Clevenger said after crossing the line in 4:11.22. “It felt very fast, after two and a half laps, it felt like I was finishing the race. “I wanted to win but that’s fine. I’ll take fourth with a fast time any day.” A year ago, he finished third in the same event, swapping places with Conant’s Zach Dale. “I love the crowd here,” he said. “Everyone is hyped up for the meet, it’s a great experience.” Another great experience is up ahead as Clevenger is
headed to Wisconsin to continue his cross country and track careers. “I’ve tried not to think about that because I was focused on my senior year and finishing it off right,” the senior said. “But I’m very happy to be going there, it’s an honor going to that school.” Alec Danner ran in the finals of the 3,200 run and clocked a 9:41.18. Zach Hogan jumped 44 feet, 6.5 inches in the triple jump preliminaries and Nick Janicki recorded a 151-6 in the discus prelims.

His final high school race May 30 at the IHSA Class 1A state meet might not have been the most memorable for Nick Dea. But after placing 32nd in the 3,200-meter finals, the fourtime state qualifier [one year as an alternate] was able to take away a lot of great memories from his career at Westmont. “I’ve had some definite highlights,” he said. “Being a conference champion, be-
ing a sectional champion. I’m thankful to all the coaches. “It’s an awesome program to be a part of, always one of the top programs in the area. Coach [Steve] Wolf is great, Coach [Rainy] Kaplan is great, every coach is awesome. It’s a great experience.” Dea came in with a time of 10:35.40. “I felt confident coming out of the sectional,” he said. “I don’t know what it was. It was a fast field but just not a good race for me. “But being down here for four days for the Class 1A guys, it’s a great group of guys from Westmont.” Dea will run next year at St. Olaf college. Sam Soltwisch posted a mark of 44 feet, 5.75 inches in the shot put prelims while the 4x800 relay team of Anthony Cordero, Leo Foertsch, BJ Zakhem and Mitch Perrotta clocked an 8:31.71 in the prelims. LISLE – Alana Pace, Skyler Poel, Kiera Aldridge and Alix Mendoza got Westmont’s offense going for an inning. Unfortunately, the Sentinels couldn’t keep it going in a season-ending 11-3 softball loss against IC Catholic in a sectional semifinal May 27 at Benedictine University. Poel singled home Pace, then Poel and Aldridge scored on Mendoza’s single as the Sentinels grabbed a 3-2 lead in the top of the third, but IC scored twice in its half of the frame and added on from there. “You have to tip your hat to them. Five errors on defense didn’t make things any easier for the Sentinels. The Knights scored three unearned runs in the fourth to extend the lead. “You can’t give people extra opportunities in the playoffs,” Bolden said. “You can’t, and when you do, that’s what hurts you the most.” Although the season ended unceremoniously, it was still a successful campaign. The Sentinels finished the year with a 22-10 record with a team that saw varsity newcomers playing key roles. Pace, Poel and pitcher Kristen Skala were seniors with experience, and junior Lauren Verdera and sophomores Aldridge and Rachel Chorney played varsity last year, but by and large Westmont was on the young side. There were 11 freshmen and sophomores on the roster. Even senior Emma May was somewhat new to softball after running track early during high school. “It was really good consid-

Mustangs, Trojans both claim baseball regionals By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DARIEN – Zack Jones might hold the unofficial record for longest start in baseball history. The Downers Grove South senior got the starting nod in the regional final game against Yorkville on May 30. He finally got the win June 1 as the Mustangs earned a 1-0 victory at the Class 4A Hinsdale South regional after rain suspended the game for two days. “Coming off the delay from after going two innings I was a little bit nervous to go back in only two days later, but obviously it went well for me and the team,” Jones said. Jones worked out of first-and-third jams in the fourth and sixth innings June 1, and the Mustangs (29-5) scored in the bottom half of the fourth. Danny Oriente started the fourth with a single, stole second, went to third on Ryan Taylor’s groundout and scored on Zack Radde’s sacrifice fly. Oriente’s hit was one of just a pair South had in the game. Joe Engel singled to start the sixth and was left stranded. While Jones was sharp on the mound, the defense behind him was Downers Grove South shortstop just as solid. Taylor started an inJoe Engel throws to first base ning-ending 5-4-3 double play in the May 27 in a regional semifinal game fifth, and Taylor raced in and made against Hinsdale South. The Musa diving catch on a sacrifice bunt attangs won the regional title June 1 tempt in the seventh. Jones had confidence he could make with a 1-0 victory against Yorkville. karma on their quest for the bigger prize. The Mustangs did the same, but the significance of winning the program’s third straight regional title was not wasted. “It feels great,” Jones said. “Obviously I’m excited and I’m sure everyone else is excited.” The regional win sends the Mustangs to the Romeoville sectional, where they will face Downers Grove North in a semifinal at 4 p.m. June 3.
Downers Grove North
The dominance Downers Grove North enjoyed against Hinsdale Central in the regular season carried over to the playoffs as the Trojans won 10-0 in five innings in a regional semifinal May 28. They followed that up with a 6-0 win against host Neuqua Valley for the regional title May 30. The Trojans will face crosstown foe Downers Grove South in a sectional semifinal at Romeoville at 4 p.m. June 3. North swept Central in a West Suburban Silver series in the regular season in three games decided by a total of five runs, but the playoff game was a lopsided affair. North led 2-0 after an inning before an eight-run fifth inning ended the game. Brendan Shanahan had two RBIs and scored two runs against Central. Dallton Baran doubled, scored a run and had two RBIs while Jack Warwick tripled, scored twice and drove in one run. Myles Farley, Brett Pyburn, Pat Geraghty and Ben Carlson each plated one run to help make a winner of Nic Laio, who yielded just two hits and struck out six in five innings on the mound.
DGN softball lives up to early promise on playoff run By MATT LE CREN editorial@mysuburbanlife.com PLAINFIELD – Downers Grove North senior pitcher Megan Ramsden had the unenviable task of following in the footsteps of Dale Ryndak. Ryndak was the 2014 Gatorade Illinois Player of the Year who guided Downers Grove North to a regional title last season before moving on to Arizona State. Ramsden might not have the pitching prowess of Ryndak, but she and her teammates still did their school proud. The Trojans’ quest for a third consecutive regional championship ended with 5-0 loss June 1 against host Plainfield East in a Class 4A regional final, but they still managed to
win 25 games. “Our program is definitely a strong program, and after the first week of practice, I knew we were going to be a force to be reckoned with this year because every single girl on this team has so much heart and so much love for the game,” Ramsden said. “And you can tell when they play.” Ramsden did her part, going 17-4 in the pitching circle. She allowed only one earned run against the Bengals (22-10), that being a home run by Grace Cowan in the top of the second inning. Plainfield East added an unearned run in the fifth and three more off Ramsden and reliever Savannah Rodriguez in the seventh. “They were a really good team and
they came out here ready to play,” said Ramsden, who walked one and struck out four. “We put everything we had into the game, but it just didn’t go our way today.” Plainfield East pitcher Bianca Vozenilek was a big reason why. The sophomore hurled a three-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and no walks. Zoe Varsbergs had the only extra-base hit for Downers North, a oneout double in the first, but she was stranded. The Trojans (25-7) had the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position with one out in the fourth but failed to score and also left two runners on in the sixth. Despite the loss, Downers North coach Eric Landschoot was pleased
with his team’s season. “Part of being a good program is to keep rebuilding every year,” Landschoot said. “Sure, you may not have the Gatorade Player of the Year every year, but you find a way to win games with the talent you have. “It was just a really great group of kids to coach and it makes my job easy when you have a group of girls like that.” Ramsden, who will not play in college, will savor the memories of her final season. “This year was so unbelievable,” Ramsden said. “Every single person on this team stepped up and did their job and contributed. We just had so much success because of the camaraderie between everyone.”
