WESTMONT – The Westmont Public Library teamed up with Literacy DuPage on Monday to recognize and raise awareness for International Literacy Day. Celebrated annually on Sept. 8 in countries around the globe, International Literacy Day aims to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. The theme of International Literacy Day 2014 is literacy and sustainable development, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, which first proclaimed the event in 1965. Locally, Literacy DuPage commemorated the event Monday with the help of 17 DuPage County libraries – up from only two county libraries in 2013. Volunteers and the organization’s staff worked the tables in the morning and afternoon, encouraging patrons to learn more about the cause, volunteer or make a donation. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Literacy DuPage Executive Director Bernie Steiger staffed the table at the Westmont Public Library. She explained the area will be the focus of the group’s strategic plan that includes targeting area residents to increase awareness of offered services, recruit additional volunteer tutors and engage local civic, women’s and faith-based organizations.

Village denies permit for medical marijuana dispensary By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – The Westmont Village Board denied a special use permit Thursday for what would have been the village’s first medical marijuana dispensary. A 4-3 vote that was decided by Mayor Ron Gunter’s tie-breaking “no,” the village board opted not to grant a special use permit that would have allowed the Colorado-based Green Solution Alternative Medicine to construct a medical marijuana dispensary at 772 Burr Ridge Drive in Westmont. Trustees Harold Barry, Steve Nero and Bob Scott voted in favor of the dispensary while trustees Sue Senicka, Jim Addington and Bruce Barker opposed the ordinance, leaving the decision in the hands of the mayor. “I have to vote no and side with our Village Attorney John Zemanak,” Gunter said during the meeting, alluding to Zemank’s rationale that the dispensary would have been

Green Solution Owner Tanya Griffin said while “plant cultivation” will be taxed 7 percent, it remains to be seen if local municipalities will see any of that money. But a 1 percent sales tax for a “qualifying drug” would go directly to the village, according to Griffin. “The taxes are a stipulation driven by the state,” Griffin said. “It’s been a challenge this past year working with this because we don’t know if the money is going to trickle down to the village.” Other officials wondered about the Green Solution Alternative Medicine security and screening procedures. “Security detail will include 24/7 video surveillance linked to police, strict policies and procedures designed to protect both patients and employees, and seed to sale tracking,” Griffin said. Additionally, only caregivers and patients with a medical card issued by the Illinois Department of Health would

have been able to access the facility, and use of the products in public outside the facility would have been forbidden. However, some board members explained that opening one of the first medical marijuana dispensaries in DuPage County would bring revenue and recognition to Westmont. “There are advantages to having this in our community,” Barry said. “There is the 1 percent sales tax, there are the patients that will visit our restaurants, buy our fuel and travel the auto mile. Anytime we are bringing people into the community, that’s an advantage for Westmont. “Also, if we are on the cutting edge of this – something positive for sick people – and they come to Westmont and all the local TV stations come, too. They will say, ‘Look what Westmont did.’” Previously on July 10, the Westmont Economic Development Committee listened to a presentation from the dispensary applicants and did not give a positive recommendation.

Q: What’s the appropriate mix of time for dentures to be in and out of the mouth? A: Dentures should be out of your mouth for eight hours every day. This gives the tissue in your mouth the opportunity it needs to let air and its revitalizing oxygen circulate around it. Otherwise, the gingival tissue – the gum – under the denture will become a breeding ground for bacterial overgrowth or for a yeast or fungal infection. Not only is this bad for the gums, it can lead to a sinus infection. However, the in/out time ratio may vary depending on how long you’ve had your dentures. Your dentist will have the final word on that. The best way to clean dentures is with a toothbrush and regular toothpaste. When your dentures are out of your mouth, you should store them in a safe location in a closed container with water or a non-sugared liquid like mouthwash to keep them moist. Dentures are designed to be in a wet environment. If you find after time that your dentures are getting loose or not fitting properly, they may need what is called a reline. In a reline, material is added to the underside of the denture and the appliance is adjusted to assure a good fit. Your dentist can give you more information about your dentures and how much time you should have them in and leave them out.

New opportunities and summer reflection As fall approaches, our village is very busy with numerous programs and initiatives. We invite our residents and businesses to get involved and be part of the process. Westmont welcomes Hilton: I want to welcome the new owners of the Hilton Chicago/Oak Brook Hills Resort to Westmont. We could not be more excited to welcome you to the comCOMMUNITY munity. We look forward to VOICE working with the new team Ron and establishing a long, sucGunter cessful partnership. Customer service: We are in the business of public service and we strive to serve our residents, visitors and businesses to the best of our ability. To celebrate our staff for their commitment to excellence, we started a monthly customer service appreciation award. I am pleased to announce Jacki Garvey and Kathy Dattillo from our Clerk’s Office were the recipients this past month. E-recycling: The village is assisting Downers Grove Township with the promotion of their monthly electronics recycling drop-off program. It’s free for residents and will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on the third Saturday of each month, except for holiday weekends. Drop-offs will occur at 318 E. Quincy St. Stormwater utility information meetings: The village will host several informational meetings between now and January regarding the importance of developing a stormwater utility to address community infrastructure improvement. In January, the village will act to approve a stormwater utility ordinance, then continue community education to promote the Spring 2015 referendum where residents vote on this issue. This is a very important topic and we urge people to get involved. Thank you, volunteers: Westmont has the best volunteers in the state of Illinois! From our citizens who get involved with our various boards and commissions to our service clubs such as rotary and the lions, to our Emergency Management Agency, to our Westmont Special Events organization and beyond, I cannot thank you enough for all you do. If you would like to know more about local volunteer opportunities, contact us at communications@westmont.il.gov or 630-417-0280. Let’s work together: Being from a parks and recreation background, I believe the importance of working together is fundamental to success. The investment you make will be the value you receive. Contact me at rgunter@westmont.il.gov or 630-981-6201. I look forward to discussing your ideas regarding how we can continue to make Westmont a great place to live, work and raise a family.

Thumbs up to Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter for awarding keys to the village to longtime residents Marcel and Theresa Levesque and Bill and Jo Wavak. The Westmont couples have been active in the business and volunteer communities, and recently celebrated their respective wedding anniversaries. The Wavaks owned Wavak Hardware until the store closed in 1989. Bill Wavak is a Lions Club member and is in the local VFW and American Legion groups. Marcel Levesque was integral in starting the Bank of Westmont, now Bank of America, and was instrumental in founding a host of girls’ athletic programs. Thumbs up to the village of Westmont for continuing to honor the lives of those who were killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. For the 12th straight year, the village will hold a Patriot’s Day ceremony at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Westmont Police-Fire Facility at 500 N. Cass Ave. Special guests will include States Attorney Bob Berlin and state House Rep. Patti Bellock.

SOUND OFF

Do not walk with traffic

Save your life by walking facing oncoming traffic. I’ve noticed dog walkers, joggers, moms pushing strollers and kids walking to school all on the wrong side of a street that has no sidewalk. Unfortunately, not all drivers pay attention. So by facing traffic, you can see them coming and can react by jumping out of the way if necessary. Defensive walking, like defensive driving, will prevent accidents.

Almost three years have passed since John Wilson was arrested for the murder of Kelli O’Laughlin. Why? The police had their reports finished the day he was charged. The defense gets all their copies within a month or two, then they investigate. Frivolous motions, month after month. Why does any judge allow this? I guess his right to a speedy trial is only good when the prosecution needs time, and he wants his case dismissed. What a joke.

Confessions are diicult, but I want to set the record straight. In order to do this, I irst need to give you some history. A few years ago, I met Kristin. She had been sufering from debilitating cluster headaches, a severe form of migraines that occur daily. She was failing out of school and had become depressed due to her feeling of helplessness and unrelenting pain. She sought treatment from neurologists, ophthalmologists, dentists, ENTs, spend 5 days in the ER and was only ofered an array of drugs with awful side efects. Finally, she was referred to a chiropractor. Within a week, her headaches were gone. She has been free of these clusters for years now, and illed with regret only that she had not gone to this doctor sooner. his is where I come in; I helped Kristin with these headaches, as I have helped many patients with various health problems. Here’s what some of them have said,

Although Chiropractic faces many skeptics, the studies speak for themselves, like the Virginia study that showed 99% of patients who saw a Chiropractor were satisied with the results. Studies also show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity naturally, which keeps you from getting sick, saving money on medical bills.

Millions of Americans still don’t have the Insurance coverage they need. hat’s where Chiropractic comes in. Many people actually save money on health care expenses by seeing a Chiropractor. Our low cost treatments are afordable and can get results without having to rely on pain meds to get through the day. An entire week of care in my oice may cost what you might pay for one visit elsewhere.

Midwestern University expands health fair By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Visitors to Midwestern University’s annual health fair next month can get a variety of free screenings and a flu shot, but organizers hope this year’s expanded offerings also will provide an interactive experience and yield a well-rounded understanding of healthy choices. The student-led, free health fair Oct. 4 is ramping up this year, and will be in the Downers Grove Park District’s Recreational Center for the first time to accommodate the longer list of booths and activities. Guests who visit each booth can win prizes, event coordinator and second-year pharmacy student Jan Kum said, and the event will include a children’s area with activities and games. “We’re creating a family friendly event,” she said. “We have one entire section of the Park District gym dedicated to children’s health. “This year, it’s activity oriented – it’s not going to be just a passive look and see. We’re not just going have a poster board and have students stand around and explain something. It’s going to have an interactive component.” The Downers Grove police and fire departments also are participating, as well as the public library. Guests 18 and older can get a free flu shot, on a firstcome, first-serve basis, and screenings include hearing, BMI, glucose level and others. Participants with unhealthy results will receive information and guidance for follow-ups. “A screening is your first line of defense,” Kum said. “There are a lot of people who don’t have insurance, and this is a great way to stop by and get your basic

Man looks to break record in fundraiser for shooting victims By ED MCMENAMIN

emcmenamin@shamwedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – When Downers Grove native Mike Sale tees off Friday for more than 2,500 holes of Frisbee golf he plans to play in 24 hours, it will be for more than just reclaiming his world record. The University of California, Santa Barbara junior is trying raise money and awareness for the victims of the school shooting that killed six people and injured 13 others near the campus last spring. “It flipped everyone around, it was no longer a happy place to be,” he said. “Everybody was depressed and sad. miles on a bike that he’d ride the 400 feet between the ninth and first holes each time he completed the course. “It’s pretty ridiculous,” he said. “I couldn’t walk for two days after that last attempt.” The record was ultimately bested three times, with the current record standing at 1,929 holes. “I had it in my head that I wanted to break the record again,” he said. “But it wasn’t until the week after (the shooting) that it was going to be my focus to try and raise money.” Sale has dedicated his summer to the task – his college classes don’t start until October – lining up several disc golf sponsors for the event, organizing a doubles tournament to take place the same day and launching a fundraiser page at gofundme.com/d99y6o. Between the Go Fund Me site, private donations and the sponsorships, he’s reached about $2,000 of his $2,500 fundraising goal, he said. For the event, Sale will travel with friends to the Blockhouse Disc Golf and Country Club in Spotsylvania, Virginia. It’s the shortest course he could find that qualifies for the record, and Sale thinks he should be able to get to at least 2,500 holes with the reduced walking time. The course also has the added benefit of being designed for play at night with lighted holes. Still, it will be an endurance test, and he plans to bring multiple pairs of shoes to ward off blisters. Sale said he started playing the sport around the time he got his driver’s license, fortuitous timing that allowed him to drive and play as many courses as he could find. He likes the pressure of individual sports, he said, the success or failure riding on his own shoulders. He also believes the wooded courses offer a meditative quality. “When you’re playing a course and there’s no one else around, the rest of the world falls away and you don’t have to worry about anything but disc golf,” he said. Like many niche sports, a community and subculture that has grown up around it as well. “The people are great,” he said “I can’t get away from it.”

may be his strongest skill in the triathlon, Solberg said he prefers to bike. “I spend the entire bike part of the race with people going ‘woosh woosh woosh,’ passing me,” he said. But that fact doesn’t deter him, as he enjoys the chance to see the scenery around him and to feel the wind go by. Doing these long triathlons was the next step for Solberg, after having done some marathons and an ultramarathon years before his first Ironman.

“I’m not good at going fast,” he said. “And so in order for it to be challenging and interesting to me, I have to keep going longer and longer.” He said that at the end of a long training session, or at the end of a race, it’s like his brain has been working to problem solve for him. “I can have a clear idea of what I need to do to make something happen or kind of figure out a complex situation,” he said. “Or really understand something better than I did.”

HINSDALE – Swim, bike, run – a phrase and a set of obstacles that can be daunting for even the most fervent fitness fanatics. But for Union Church of Hinsdale Sr. Pastor Mike Solberg, the 140.6 mile Mike Ironman Triath- Solberg lon is a right of passage and something to look forward to. From the time he was in high school, Solberg was in awe of any person who could do the three-part race. He remembered the feeling he had as he watched the first Ironman race from his home in 1978. “The original Ironman in Kona, Hawaii, was on Wide World of Sports, and I remember thinking ‘Wow, it would be really cool to finish one of those some day,’” he said. That moment always stuck in his mind, until the time when he did his first Ironman Triathlon in 2006. On Sept. 7, Solberg was to compete in his third Ironman race. The triathlon that includes a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run will be held in Madison, Wis. As he prepares to head to Madison in the coming week,

Solberg said the biggest challenge isn’t to push himself but to remain healthy so he can compete in the race, as this will be his first Ironman since turning 50. Yet this time, unlike during his first two Ironmans, he’s doing it for a reason besides himself. Solberg said he will be racing to raise money for a theological seminary in the African country of Angola. In the weeks leading up to the race, Solberg has raised about $18,000, which will go toward the seminarians at the Evangelical Congregational Church in Angola. The Union Church of Hinsdale is part of a regional church group made up of 200 churches in Illinois, the Illinois Conference, which has been a partner with the church in Angola. “That conference has had a partnership with the church in Angola for 10 years now,” Solberg said. With the renewed racing goal also comes a new challenge, as he hopes to both cross the finish line and raise $22,000. Race preparation isn’t all smooth riding for the Hinsdale pastor, who said each challenge he’s undertaken has required rigorous training. And it isn’t a meditative trance that keeps him going during races. Rather, he focuses on the task at hand. “When I’m swimming, all I’m really thinking about is,

Restaurant reviews

Suburban Life Media photos

The patio beckons at Emilio’s Tapas in Hillside, known for the art of the small plate repast and the famed Spanish specialty, paella.

Good things come on small plates at Emilio’s HILLSIDE – Whether it’s a romantic date for two or a meal with friends and family, it’s all about sharing when it comes to dining on tapas, the “small plates” that originated in Spain and went on to deliciously infiltrate other cuisines. It’s a pure pleasure to go back to one of the region’s original purveyors: Emilio’s Tapas in Hillside. We dropped by late on a Saturday afternoon before the restaurant filled, and opted for a table on the flower-ringed patio, where retractable awnings are available to counter any unwanted sun or rain. Lightly falling water from a lion’s-head fountain helped set the mood, with soft Spanish music providing a subliminal dance beat. The indoor seating, which includes a bar, is an attractively escapist setting of rustic walls adorned with intricate tile patterns and murals of Spanish scenes. While we perused a menu traditionally divided between offerings of cold (fria) and hot (caliente) tapas, and varieties of the famous specialty paella – a saffron-infused rice typically featuring seafood – our helpful server brought a complimentary plate of a Spanish ham spread on crusty bread garnished with baby lettuces. She filled us in on the day’s specials and made welcome recommendations as we pro-

A superb dish is the grilled black Angus with sauteed oyster and mush- A decadent treat are the bacon-wrapped dates in a red pepper butter rooms, Spanish potatoes and cilantro cava sauce – Turnedos de Cebon. sauce – Datiles con Tocino. gressed through the leisurely meal. It was apparent from the nearby conversations between servers and guests that a lot of happy regulars were on hand. We couldn’t resist ordering our go-to tapa: bacon-wrapped dates in a red pepper butter sauce. The dish was exceptional, featuring dates that were unusually plump, sweet and velvety. Add the applewood smoked bacon and the delicate red pepper sauce counterpoint, and it’s a standout. We used the bread basket offerings to sop up every last drop. Another tradition my companion couldn’t resist is the garlic potato salad, not for the faint of heart when it comes to the generous chopped cloves. With a short tower of clean plates at the ready, we tried something new to us: grilled black Angus with sauteed

oyster and shiitake mushrooms, Spanish potatoes and cilantro cava sauce. The beef was tender, flavorful and cooked medium rare exactly to order. It paired well with a Spanish version of home fries and the zesty sauce made with cava, Spain’s answer to Champagne. We capped the meal with a delectable cold tapa of roasted eggplant, pear tomato and green onion, accented with piquant goat cheese and grilled shrimp with a balsamic vinaigrette. The mild eggplant dominated the dish, and provided a fresh veggie spread for toast points. Service throughout our meal was wonderful, with water glasses kept full and plates whisked away in anticipation of the next arrival. To keep in mind for a future visit, flamenco performances are featured peri-

odically, and the restaurant offers a gluten-free menu. We hadn’t left enough room to try any of the desserts, which range from Callebaut bittersweet chocolate terrine with raspberry sauce to Flan de Caramelo to a cheese plate with local honeycomb, Spanish quince, figs and Spanish Marcona almonds. However, we did indulge in a superb cappuccino, rich in creamy flavor and froth, that was prepared, our server told us, from organic, free trade beans. It was a perfect ending to a relaxed, savory meal.

MORE BEARS COVERAGE AT CHICAGOFOOTBALL.COM

It’s official: Emery’s 1st draft was poor If the Bears present is shaky, the future very well could be scary Did the Chicago Bears run into a better team in their opening day disappointment versus the Buffalo Bills at Soldier Field, or was it just another step in the “process” that GM Phil Emery and coach Marc Trestman reference so often? I suspect it was the latter, which isn’t necessarily good news, but minimally tells us we’re just going to have to hang on for a few more weeks before we really know what we’ve got in these Chicago Bears. If in fact the Bears just aren’t as good as the Buffalo Bills, then Emery and Trestman have a big problem on their hands. The Bills aren’t a bad team, but at best they are one of a number of average or mediocre teams in the NFL that are going nowhere fast. That then could mean that the Monsters of the Midway are just a bad football team. Like I said, I’m not ready to write off this year’s Bears, and I really don’t think you should either. But even if these guys

CHICAGO FOOTBALL.COM Hub Arkush bounce back and give us an exciting season, the future for the Bears is not all that bright. According to a study by Philly.com, the Bears are the third oldest team in the NFL today, and their starting defense is definitely the oldest. The future of any NFL team is based on how it drafts and scouts college talent. The reason these Bears are so old is a number of years of bad drafting by Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith. Now I’m sure you’re all thinking no news flash there, but it is time to start wondering if Emery and Trestman have that trend turned. It is now time to officially declare Emery’s first draft as the Bears general manager as disappointing to poor. Yes, Alshon Jeffery is a great addition to this team and possibly even a building

Don’t miss seeing ‘Chicago Football Now’ Watch Hub Arkush and the rest of our coverage team break down this weekend’s Bears game on “Chicago Football Now” at 10:30 a.m. Saturday on WCIU The U or at 2:30 p.m. Saturday on The U Too. block for the future. Unfortunately, that’s it. Shea McClellin continues to receive chances and to disappoint. He and Isaiah Frey on the practice squad are all that remain from that group. Even if McClellin becomes a serviceable starter, that’s just not enough from an entire draft class. The Bears have Kyle Long, Jon Bostic, Khaseem Greene, Jordan Mills, Cornelius Washington, Marquess Wilson and Demontre Hurst to show for Emery’s sophomore class. It is at least 16 weeks too early to grade this group

or form any final conclusions about the long-term prospects of any of these prospects other than to say Kyle Long looks like another potential building block for the future. But is it fair to ask what your expectations are for any or all of Long’s classmates? A few more serviceable to better-than-average NFL players? If that is in fact how it turns out, once again Emery and company just have to do better. There are 10 drafted rookies or undrafted rookie free agents on this year’s final 53, the same number as the Bears kept last year. That is a nice number, but the question we need to ask is, is that because the talent is so exciting, or the talent they had to beat out to make the team was uninspiring? What we can say for sure is if this year’s crop of Bears rookies don’t prove to be better than the first two groups Emery compiled, the franchise is in some serious jeopardy.

IT’S ALL ABOUT DRIVE

$

2 , 500 00 00

What is interesting is Emery has proven to have a very good eye for veteran talent. And he seems to work veteran free agency very well. But by itself, that is a one-way ticket to average. Counting on veteran free agents to contend will almost always lead to salary cap issues, a lack of depth up and down your roster and perhaps some number of very good players but a certain lack of star power. There is enough talent on this 2014 Bears roster for this team to be a playoff contender, even after the embarrassing loss to Buffalo. But that’s only if this group can stay healthy and get itself focused on stopping the run. But if this 2014 rookie class doesn’t turn out to be the best the Bears have had since 2003, the last good draft this club had, and the next couple of drafts aren’t better than that, Bears fans had best start preparing for a very long dry spell before their club is ready to contend again.

Sentinels’ slow start leads to loss By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com PLANO – Week 2 of the high school football season was quite different than Week 1 for Westmont. The Sentinels romped past Chicago Christian 56-34 to start the season but then were on the other end of lopsided score in Friday’s 65-21 loss against Plano in an Interstate Eight Conference crossover game. “We got off to a slow start,” Westmont head coach Otto

Zeman said. “We weren’t playing like ourselves in the first quarter. We played pretty tough after that, but it’s a matter of getting started off on the right foot.” The Reapers scored the first 28 points of the game, and even after Kyle Domin hooked up with Marcus Mott-Larsen for an 80-yard touchdown, Plano answered with a score late in the first quarter to make it a 35-7 contest entering the second quarter. By halftime, the Reapers led 49-14.

Although the Sentinels (1-1) gave up plenty of points, Zeman pointed to the offensive struggles as the bigger problem. “We made some mistakes defensively, but we weren’t able to move the ball early,” Zeman said. Plano (1-1) did most of its damage on the ground, rushing for 426 yards to Westmont’s 167, many of which came on Quintin Brown’s 99-yard scoring run with 9:09 left in the third quarter. Brown finished with 118 yards for the game. Quarterback Kyle Domin

went 13-for-26 for 210 yards through the air and added 30 yards on the ground. He scored on a 7-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter, and Dimitrios Latsonas added the extra point to make it a 3514 game. Friday was Domin’s second game as a varsity starter and the first time he truly faced adversity. In the coach’s eyes, he handled it well. “Under the circumstances, he played well,” Zeman said. “We didn’t always do a great job blocking, but he hung in

there and played tough.” On defense, Marquis Thomas led the way with 17 tackles. Brown had 13 takedowns, and Adam Ferrell finished with nine. Westmont is on the road again Friday against Herscher for the first Interstate Eight Small game of the season. Zeman and his players quickly put the Plano game behind them to get ready for the Week 3 matchup. “We’ll get there,” the coach said. “We had a good workout on Saturday, so we’re going in the right direction.”

Turnovers take toll in close game for Trojans By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DARIEN – Zach Hogan was a force to be reckoned with during Friday’s football game against Hinsdale South. The Downers Grove North junior defensive lineman had a pair of sacks, several other tackles and a slew of hard hits, but after a 6-0 loss against the Hornets, Hogan said he and his teammates still have room for improvement. “We need to get our hustle up, do a little more conditioning and have more intensity when we come back out,” Hogan said. It’s hard to imagine Hogan and his teammates on defense could have done much more. By and large, North held Hinsdale South in check. The Hornets’ touchdown came after the Trojans fumbled the ball deep in their own territory. South got the ball on the 8-yard line and punched it in from the 5-yard line soon after. “We turned the ball over on the 5, and there you have it,” North head coach John Wander said. “That was the difference in the game. They played very hard and made some good plays against us. They capitalized on a turnover and I don’t think they turned the ball over. “

South’s score was the first time in the game either team had entered the red zone. The Trojans (1-1) drove to the Hornets’ 22-yard line early in the fourth quarter but turned the ball over on downs. They got to the 25-yard line later in the fourth and had that drive cut short by Robert Hall’s interception for Hinsdale South. “It was back and forth, and in football a lot of times in close games it comes down to turnovers and penalties,” South head coach Mike Barry said. “We had the penalties and they had the turnovers, but it worked out on our behalf. The turnovers changed field position in a major way, and they turned the momentum as well.” Kenny Yeo played at quarterback in the fourth quarter in place of starter David Edwards, who came off the field with 47 seconds left in the third quarter. Edwards ran a keeper, was swarmed by several Hornets and remained on the ground after the pile dissipated. He walked gingerly off the field and was kept on the sidelines even though he was eligible to return. “It was in the pile. He took a Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com shot,” Wander said. “He’s fine. Downers Grove South captures thrilling win against Proviso West By JASON ROSSI

Week 3 matchup

jrossi@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Trailing by seven points with less than a minute to play is not the ideal situation for most football teams. For Downers Grove South, it was the stage on which a memorable comeback took place. A touchdown with two seconds left in regulation forced overtime, and the Mustangs won 28-27 against Proviso West in a West Suburban Conference crossover game Friday night. “We found a way to get it done,” South head coach Mark Molinari said. Outlook: Westmont will Benet’s Ryley Guay battles Downers Grove North’s Matthew Metzler for the ball during a game Aug. 26. The have a very different look at Redwings have plenty of returning talent and could be one of the top teams in the area the back end of the defense as Outlook: After a down year

in 2013, the Trojans are looking to rebound under new head coach Mike Schmitt. So far, things appear to be headed in the right direction. North held a powerful Benet team in check in the season opener, and the squad earned a decisive 6-1 win against Montini on Sept. 3. Eight seniors on the roster provide leadership, and there is nice balance and talent spread across the field with Liam Budnick and Carter Tome in the midfield, Mike Molloy up front and Jake Stevenson leading the way on defense. Schmitt said the main goals the team has is to surpass last year’s performance and play solid, quality soccer. North will certainly see quality opponents along the way. Aside from conference foes Hinsdale Central and Lyons Township, the Trojans will face a slew of solid teams in the PepsiCo Showdown tournament.

Outlook: If the early results are any indication, the Mustangs are primed to improve on last year. In their first three games, they had surrendered just one goal and blanked both Fremd and Hinsdale Central as they jumped out to a 2-0-1 record. “At this point in the season, I have been happy with the way we have defended,” head coach Jon Stapleton said. “I also feel we have demonstrated a lot of depth at several positions. It seems every night someone new has made a big

contribution, which will only make our team stronger as the season goes along.” In Eric Diaz, South possesses a player who was an Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association all-sectional player last year and is a force at both ends of the field. Diaz provides plenty of scoring punch, but as the season goes on, Stapleton will be looking for more players to figure into the attack. “We spent a lot of our preseason on defending, so as a result we are probably a little behind in being creative in the final third of the field,” the coach said. “As the season continues, I expect we will take positive strides in that area.”

all-conference goal keeper Jordan Slagle has graduated and moved on to play at the College of DuPage. Interstate Eight all-conference forward Scott Larem and eight other seniors also have moved on. There are seven freshmen on the roster, but it appears the Sentinels are poised to surpass last year’s results. The squad played to a 2-2 draw against Indian Creek on Aug. 30 and picked up a 3-0 win against Universal Islamic Academy on Thursday. Ben Ledwon has already scored twice, and fellow freshman Trevino Fukar has a goal and an assist. Both have plenty of club soccer experience. “Only four starters are seniors, so every game is a learning experience,” head coach Ron Neurauter said. “These young players have more skills than any new players we’ve had in the past. We have not had to start from scratch, and they are also quick learners. As they figure out what it takes to compete … we could be a dangerous playoff team in October.”

WMP

Outlook: As always, the Redwings have high expectations. Kyle Kenagy is back in the fold at forward after earning several postseason accolades last year, including East Suburban Catholic all-conference, ESCC offensive co-Player of the Year, and Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association allstate. Konrad Bayer, Richard Michalik and Daniel Morefield are back with the varsity. “All are returning players and all played big minutes last year,” Benet head coach Sean Wesley said. “We are dangerous in transition with lots of pace and we are able to score goals.” Benet also has the ability to stop goals from being scored with Bayer in net, although three of the four defenders in front of him are new. So far, that has not been an issue as the Redwings won their first three games of the season via shutout. “We may be young, but we expect to do well in the Best of the West tournament, win conference and make a run towards the state title at the end of the year,” Wesley said.

Downers Grove North goalkeeper Jimmy Miller puts the ball back in play in an Aug. 26 game against Benet. The Trojans are under the guidance of a new head coach this season.
