WESTMONT – Village of Westmont Trustee Sue Senicka laid down the gauntlet Aug. 21 during a village board meeting. “Westmont community, residents, business owners and volunteers, you have been challenged,” Senicka said, alluding to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. “We’d love to have as many people as we can to raise money and awareness for ALS.” The Westmont community accepted the challenge Thursday, as residents, village officials, business owners, first responders, volunteers and even a mascot lined up at the season’s final Cruisin’ Nights Street Fair and were showered in buckets of ice water. The outpouring of support was and incredibly moving gesture, Senicka said, estimating that about 40 people took the Ice Bucket Challenge and more than 100 people came to watch the event. “It exceeded all of my expectations,” Senicka said. “It was so cool to see so many people come out and support the cause. Even some people who did not participate gave cash donations, which were collected by the Westmont Special Events Corporation and will be reflected in one big donation from the WSEC to the ALS Association.” About three weeks ago, Senicka was challenged by friend and fellow resident Colleen Alexander. The trustee’s initial plan was to nominate and complete the challenge with Fire Chief Dave Weiss, Police Chief Tom Mulhearn and Westmont Chamber Executive

When You’ve Been to the Doctor, But Your Pain Remains … 3 Good Reasons to Get a Second Opinion SPONSORED BY

Stubborn pain syndromes can be some of the most frustrating to endure for, both those who are suffering, their families and friends. Difficult chronic pain can cause repeated loss of work, absence from important family events and difficulty with activities of daily living, preventing you or your loved ones from living a vital lifestyle. They’re particularly frustrating after you’ve seen your primary care physician, been referred for routine therapies and your pain still isn’t resolved. As many as 35 million adults in the US suffer unresolved chronic pain, but don’t let statistics discourage you. Many long-term pain sufferers are finding pain management strategies that finally do work even after routine therapies and specialists have failed, and they’re living healthy lifestyles as a result. Here’s why unresolved pain after medical treatment could be well worth a second opinion. New therapies and technologies are innovated for pain management every year Multi-disciplinary strategies are resolving pain where previous therapies have failed Previous medical treatment may not have determined the origins of chronic pain

CAPS PainCare has often found solutions that work, even after routine therapies and specialist referrals haven’t because of our unique approach to pain management. Request a referral from your primary care physician to get a 2nd opinion on pain that still hasn’t been resolved. Your doctor is welcome to speak directly with our advanced pain specialist, Dr. Tony Chami , to learn why our approach succeeds where others have not – 888-3104259. WESTMONT – The village of Westmont continues to excavate trees infested with the emerald ash borer and recently released a schedule for removing and replanting trees throughout the community. While the village’s forestry department is handling a portion of the tree removal, Westmont-based Vidito Tree Experts also had been contracted to remove 54 ash trees and 200 stumps. The $34,718 expenditure was approved earlier this year and another company could be contracted if deemed necessary, according to the village. “The reality is that the emerald ash borer problem is too large a problem for our internal staff to take care of on its own,” Village Forester Jon Yeater said. “Because of this situation, the village has approved funding to hire additional resources to address the problem. We are hoping to accelerate our tree removal program over the next six months, but we do ask residents to be

The Illinois Department of Agriculture confirmed four years ago, the emerald ash borer had made its way to Westmont. At that time, there were about 2,000 ash trees on public property. Since then, about half the trees have been removed. The village is removing trees in Oakwood Subdivision. Starting this fall, the program will focus on tree removal in the Ashford Subdivision and surrounding areas: • In September: All removals in the northeast downtown and northeast sections of the village (near Burlington to Og-

den avenues, and Cass Avenue to South Wilmette Avenue and Richmond Street). • In September and October: All removals in the southeast downtown (near Quincy Street to 56th Street and Cass Avenue to Richmond Street). • In October and November: All removals in Farmingdale Subdivision and surrounding areas. • In December and January: All removals in Deer Creek and Sycamore Run subdivisions and surrounding areas. The village is planting new trees in areas where trees have been removed. The goal is to have everything that was removed before February be replanted by the fall. However, some specific species selected for individual sites are spring plantings only, which will be replanted in spring 2015. Although not all removals will be replaced, the village will plant sugar maples, Norway maples, oaks and elms when replacing an ash tree. For information, contact Village Forester Jon Yeater at jyeater@westmont.il.gov or 630-981-6285.

Ask Dr. Webster

Q: What happens in a periodontal exam? A: The goal of the periodontal exam is to assess the health of your gums and the bone that supports your teeth. As part of that assessment, your dentist will probe along the gum line to measure the depth of the pockets between the gum and the tooth. The dentist will use a narrow instrument called a periodontal probe, a rule of sorts, with lines marked in millimeters. Abnormally deep pockets are a sign of periodontal, or gum, disease. The dentist will also be observant about whatever bleeding occurs during the exam. Bleeding generally indicates inflammation. Swollen, red and bleeding gums may alert a person to a gum problem, but clinical measurements throughout the mouth are necessary to determine if true periodontal pocketing has developed. The periodontal exam also includes observation and documentation of the color and texture of gum tissue, the extent of gum recession, evidence of any tooth grinding and a measurement of tooth mobility. Your dentist will record all these observations not only to determine whether you have the beginnings of gum disease, but also to set a baseline of statistics and observations against which to compare future exams. Talk with your dentist about ways to keep your gums healthy.

Every day, millions of people across the country self-inject their medications, but they don’t always dispose of used sharps, syringes and lancets properly. To combat this, disposal regulation laws are now in place in a growing number of states, according to a village news release. The Village of Westmont has partnered with Waste Management to enact the sharps disposal initiative. DOWNERS GROVE – Visitors to the Downtown Downers Grove Art Festival will have even more to see, hear and taste this weekend as the annual event expands to include Curtiss Street and adds a beer and wine tent for the first time, joining the live music stage. Art lovers will be able to shop from booths displaying work from 131 artists from across the country and around the globe, including two from Downers Grove – painter Lisa Domaszewicz and photographer Jessica Cepele. Shoppers may remember Domaszewicz’s booth from last year, full of birds and other bright wildlife painted on square wooden blocks. “They’re fun,” she said. “People always smile when they walk by my booth.” Before painting, Domaszewicz adds a layers of modeling paste for texture, almost giving the wood surface a carved look. “Then I’ll do different layers of colors,” she said. “And I like to use a lot of metallics. My art is very colorful and bold and vibrant.” Painting on wood, as opposed to canvas, is both time-saving and more cost-ef-

build in the downtown. “We are only doing our constitutional duty and right,” Hanlon said. Their belief is the condominium and master plan would hurt the downtown business climate. Additionally, Hanlon created and is spear heading a group named Saving Clarendon Hills that combat the plan. The group members recently collected enough signatures to get an advisory referendum on the Nov. 4 ballot. The advisory referendum will ask if building height should be limited in the downtown area to two stories, or 30

feet, whichever is smaller. The referendum is not binding. Village trustee Ed Reid said he hopes in the future people join the discourse early on, instead of filing a referendum at the last minute. Reid said the master plan has been assembled and tweaked over the past 14 months, and in that time there have been about 50 meetings. “I am disheartened by the fact that we have the referendum that has been put fourth by a certain group in this town,” Reid said. While 388 signed the petition in support of the referendum, Reid said he only has received one email about resi-

dents’ concerns. Also during the meeting, community members criticized the groups tactics, including automated phone calls they had sent out. “A robocall that came out Aug. 1, some of you may have gotten it – I got it,” resident Vivian Hessel said. “It started out as saying ‘This is a community alert.’ Community alert! What was going on? Was there a fire, an explosion? I mean it took a few seconds for me to realize that this is just someone that is trying to scare me.” Final approval of the Downtown Master Plan will be made by the Village Board.

CLARENDON HILLS – The Downtown Master Plan is awaiting final approval from the Clarendon Hills Village Board after the Zoning Board of Appeals/Plan Commission approved it Aug. 21. However, the advisory plan has created some debate regarding how tall the village will allow buildings to be, leading to a lawsuit brought by two residents against the village. The recommended maximum building height in the plan is five stories, which board member Wil Freve said is an improvement on current village code.

“It’s been made to seem we’re opening the floodgates to taller developments,” Freve said. “But there’s no limit now.” But some residents see the master plan as a potential threat to their property values, a financial burden to taxpayers and detrimental to the picturesque feel of the village. Clarendon Hills resident Sue Hanlon has opposed the plan because she fears it will change the look and feel of the village, and hinder the local business community. As a result, Hanlon and resident Phil Altvater are currently suing the village and resident Mike Van Zandt over a condominium Van Zandt is trying to

Making college more affordable for everyone Summer has ended, and that means it’s back to school time for families across the country. For those parents who recently loaded up the car and dropped their kids off at college, the excitement of another year of school is tempered by another year of looming tuition bills and ever increasing education expenses. To take some of the guesswork out of financial planning, the House passed the Strengthening Transparency in Higher Education Act, which creates a consumer-tested College Dashboard, giving students and parents the tools to fully understand the total cost of college before deciding where to COMMUNITY continue their education. VOICE Another bill, the EmPeter powering Students Through Roskam Enhanced Financial Counseling Act, provides interactive counseling through an online tool each year a student participates in a federal loan program. By increasing loan awareness and financial planning before and throughout the college experience, we can eliminate surprise expenses and ensure students work through available grant and scholarship options to shrink the size of their student loan. The House also passed two bills that would streamline the tax code, making it easier for families to use tax credits to make college more affordable. The Student and Family Tax Simplification Act consolidates four existing education provisions into a single, modernized and permanent American Opportunity Tax Credit that families can use to offset tuition expenses, fees and course materials. Middle- and low-income families would be eligible for a 100 percent tax credit for the first $2,000 of eligible higher education expenses and a 25 percent tax credit for the next $2,000 of such expenses, providing relief for those who need it the most. The House also voted to reform the Child Tax Credit, indexing it to inflation and eliminating the marriage penalty so families can more easily receive their full eligible amount. Simplifying education tax credits ensures families can get the most savings possible, and students can spend less time worrying about financing their education, instead focusing on developing the skills necessary to enter the workforce. Obtaining a quality education is key to bettering the lives of our children and ensuring their long term success, and getting a college degree shouldn’t mean a lifetime of student loan debt. These common-sense, bipartisan bills are a big step toward tackling the cost of higher education, and opening up more opportunities for the next generation.

Tom Back of Glen Ellyn points out the golf ball to James Lee of East St. Louis on Aug. 20 at Willow Crest Golf Club during an outing for visually impaired veterans.

Thumbs up to Willow Crest Golf Club and Jack McInerney for hosting the sixth annual golf outing for visually impaired veterans Aug. 20. The yearly event is part of the Central Blind Rehabilitation Center at Edward Hines Jr. Veterans Hospital program that helps visually impaired veterans cope with their condition. For about three hours Aug. 20, 12 veterans paired up caddies – many of whom are former local high school football coaches or marines – who helped the golfers tee up, address and hit the ball, doling out encouragement and pointers on each hole. Thumbs up to everyone who participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. As of Friday, the outpouring of support from local residents and people all over the world has helped raise more than $100 million for the ALS Association, compared to $2.8 million from July 29 to Aug. 29, 2013. A handful of Westmont officials accepted the challenge Thursday during the weekly street fair, but they were just a few of the local students, residents, business owners and elected officials to get in on the action. Why not play in bandshell?

I want to know why they had live music that played in the library parking lot during Rotary [Grove]Fest and did not play in the Park District bandshell, where it’s designed for that, and the bandshell cost the taxpayers over $1 million. It’s rather curious.

What a world

Wow, dogs can pee on your flowers. And you can have a flowerbed attract butterflies, finches and hummingbirds, but it’s considered a noxious weed. What a world.

Thanks to good Samaritan who helped with pet

On July 2, our beloved young dog, Jessie, was hit on Woodridge Drive at Echo Park. It was an unfortunate accident but fatal. My husband had no vehicle, called me and before I arrived, a wonderful gentleman stopped and took them to the vet hospital. I was told he was employed at the nearby grade school. Later, he remained at the hospital until I arrived to be with him. Sadly, we did not get his name. I hope he knows how truly thankful we are. He made us realize there are people out there that really care and look out for others. With all the bad news we hear now from the media, there is sunshine. We will be forever grateful.

A response to the incident in Ferguson, Mo.

I want to respond to the person that said something about Ferguson and the video. They said that Brown was not a gentle giant. I don’t care what kind of giant he was. He did not deserve to be shot six times and two times in the head. He was a human being, OK? Wake up. We [are] tired of shooting people down. And as

More about Ferguson, Mo.

This is in response to the man who wondered about the riots in Ferguson, Mo. Rather than doing all that fancy thinking you’re doing, maybe you should do a little research and realize that in the last number of years it’s been open season on African-Americans by the police, whether or not the African-Americans are armed. How many more dead people must there be before someone does decide, “Hey, let’s protest?”

All political candidates are liars about assets

It’s humorous as how the people running for office accuse each other of using loopholes to not pay taxes. One example is having their money saved overseas in different accounts, which is just laughable because they all do the same thing. They all know where and how to hide their assets and then lie to the voters. Not everyone believes these lies, I hope.

I’m also trying to stay true to the location as well, when I’m capturing the story. “I want you to feel like you’ve been there, and not just see the picture.” Cepele’s work also regularly features lighthouses, midwest locations, Chicago and wildlife. To be included in the festi-

val, artists submitted work to a panel of judges, according to Festival Director Amy Amdur. One hundred thirty-one were selected for the sale. Amdur’s production company took the festival’s reigns five years ago and expanded it to its two-day format. “We’ve got all kinds of artists; we’ve got all kinds of price points,” she said. “Everything you see at the show is for sale. I tell people to buy what they love and what makes them feel good. You don’t have to spend a lot of

money to feel good.” Amdur added the fest is family-friendly and handicapped accessible. To that point, there’s a children’s coloring area, along with a setup for shoppers to make their own spin art. The festival does not have food vendors in an effort to encourage shoppers to eat at the existing downtown restaurants, she said. “To be able to be on the Main Street in the downtown, just the setting alone is cool,” she said.

The prospective training participants are interviewed by Career Connect board members, including Dutra, and some move on to a second round of interviews and reading and math testing with jobs trainer Jane Addams Resource Corp. Resource Associate Director Regan Brewer said her organization looks for people who have a good attitude, are reliable and have an eagerness to learn the trade. The first set of classes in computerized numerical control and welding will run 3:30 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Technology Center of DuPage in Addison, Brewer said. Classes are open entry, meaning accepted candidates can begin whenever they like and leave when they are certified and have a job. While there are still some logistics to work out – Fulks mentioned transportation issues – Brewer said the partnership with the center was a “match made in Heaven” to provide a workplace-simulating environment. She said the goal for the DuPage program was to have 20 to 25 complete one of the two classes by the end of the year, with all certified in their field and safety certified with a forklift license. Dutra said he is reaching out to area nonprofits to help provide resources to program members, including day care. The involved groups will work with the Alliance for Illinois Manufacturing, a 600-strong partner organization, to place workers.

The newly hired lead coordinator for manufacturing job training program Career Connect Metro West said after months of work and years of planning, it and partner agencies are ready to begin filling the empty manufacturing lines of DuPage County. Joe Dutra began his post June 2, hired with part of the $200,000 in seed money the DuPage County Board pledged to the effort in March. The initiative spawned by nonprofit DuPage United will accept its first class of workforce trainees Sept. 8, he said. “When DuPage United first started reaching out to the community several years ago, jobs were obviously the biggest concern,” he said. “So we started diving into solutions.” One solution was manufacturing. According to DuPage United, the county has the second biggest manufacturing industry in the state, behind Cook. But existing companies have had to turn away new business because of the lack of trained workers, Dutra said, and the organization estimates there will be 9,000 new, high-paying jobs in the field across the next 10 years vacated by retirees. “If we can’t replace those 9,000 jobs, manufacturing is going to leave,” he said. “If we put them in now, we can have experts in the field.” Manufacturing expansion also helps other industries, Dutra said, creating a trickle-down effect for the entire area. During the past several months, Career Connect has hosted more than 20 recruitment sessions across the county, including last week at Glen Ellyn’s Faith Lutheran Church, one of DuPage United’s many faith-based partners. Faith Lutheran member Debbie Fulks, a volunteer organizer for the Aug. 20 session, said the church hosted 22 attendees – all but one individually recruited by Faith members, and only one a member of Faith. Fulks said recruitment efforts included speaking to church members, contacting area nonprofits and reaching

dated Aug. 19, Joseph Academy Founder and CEO Mike Schack addressed the end of the school’s DuPage County program. “After two years, we have not been able to sustain the Joseph Academy program in the former DuPage County Youth Home,” he wrote. The academy, which opened in December 2012 in Wheaton, served students with emotional, behavioral and learning challenges who were referred to the program through their school districts. Schack said his letter was sent “with a heavy heart,” citing a lack of federal and state funding for special education and low enrollment as the cause of the closing. In an interview with Suburban Life in March, Schack said the program hoped to have 18 to 20 students attend the school annually but only served eight a year ago. The academy began falling behind on its bills, owing nearly $12,000 in rent to its landlord, DuPage County, until the board voted to waive the backlog and allow the program to operate rent-free through the end of September. “The DuPage Board has been most understanding and helpful through excellent maintenance and rental reductions during these years,” Schack wrote. “Joseph Acad-

emy was blessed with such a solid landlord. We are very grateful for the chance you provided and stand ready to serve in any capacity should a future need arise for an educational program in the facility.” Schack also stated the school submitted a grant proposal to Gov. Pat Quinn’s budget manager for the addition of a boarding school component, but receiving the grant appeared “a remote possibility.” The academy’s final day of occupation was Sept. 1. Cronin announced the closure publicly at the County Board meeting Aug. 26. “This school year, Joseph Academy locations across Chicagoland graduated 43 students,” he said. “The teachers and staff helped turn around the lives of those young people and their families. We believe in their devotion to serving this unique population of students with special education needs. We wish them well indeed, as they continue to operate Joseph Academy in other locations throughout the region.” The school also has sites in Des Plaines, Hometown and Melrose Park. County spokesperson Johnna Kelly said the children in the program were offered alternative placements and the county is looking at filling the vacancy left by the academy internally.

Old Vilnius Café imports taste of Lithuania DARIEN – Although I knew nothing about Lithuanian food, my companion was thrilled when I asked him to join me for dinner at Old Vilnius Café, named after the country’s capital. Inside the door sits a gift shop full of Lithuanian wares, many celebrating the 1992 bronze-medal Lithuanian Olympic basketball team. Mugs, T-shirts and amber jewelry line the shelves. The shop opens up into a small deli offering traditional candy, Lithuanian magazines and a variety of goodies to take home. Beyond the gift shop, the intimate dining room is a mix of cozy and elegant, with black padded leather chairs and dark wood furnishings lit softly by wall sconces. Old Vilnius Café serves Lithuanian and Eastern European cuisine, with dishes made in-house from scratch. During our visit, the waiter apologized when my companion ordered zeppelins, because the traditional dish of grated potato dumplings stuffed with minced meat had sold out, but he gladly offered a fried version as a substitute for the boiled. After reading through the menu, I decided to start with an appetizer of fried Lithuanian bread served with a warm cheese and garlic sauce. The strips of crispy bread were piled into a large bowl and smothered in gooey cheese. It was delicious, but very rich. I was glad to have someone helping me dig in before our main courses arrived. My companion sipped on warm red beet soup, borszcz, which I sampled and really enjoyed. A cold variation of the soup also is an option. Although our waiter tried to warn us, we ordered much more food than we could finish, but the place was a meat and potato lover’s paradise that proved hard to resist. Because it was my first time eating Lithuanian food, I

They came with a side of sour cream and bacon tidbits, as did many items on the menu. The savory dish was a delicious balance of starchy potatoes, salty bacon and cool sour cream. My eager dining companion, much more educated about the cuisine thanks to fond childhood memories of many of the dishes, ordered a combination plate to taste

a bit of everything. His plate arrived loaded with fried zeppelin, potato sausage, kugelis, Lithuanian sausage and sauerkraut. Of course, bacon and sour cream added their decadent flourish. My favorite was the kugelis, a baked potato cross between cake and pudding. It reminded me of twice-baked potatoes, but the best I’d ever had. In addition to a wide range of European chicken, beef and

pork entrees, the menu offers several all-American options such as chicken wings, Caesar salad and a bacon cheddar Angus burger. We ended up boxing half of our dinner to take home, but if I hadn’t been so stuffed, I would have loved to try a slice of raspberry cheesecake or chocolate lava cake. Cocktails, Lithuanian beer and wine also are featured. Old Vilnius Café combines

ethnic cuisine with a welcoming atmosphere and plenty of options for Lithuanian food fans and those less familiar with the hearty dishes.

If you like baseball, you’ve probably watched the World Series on television. But did you know that Little League Baseball also has a world series? It’s played every August in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where Little League Baseball was created. This year, the sport is celebrating its 75th anniversary. By the end of the 19th century, baseball was known as America’s pastime, but there were few opportunities for children to play organized games. That’s when Carl Stotz of Williamsport stepped in. Stotz often played ball with his young nephews, and in 1938 decided to organize a program for them as a way to teach them about sportsmanship and teamwork. There were just three teams in the early years, but the sport quickly grew, and by the 1950s, there were teams all over the U.S. as well as other countries. Today, more than 200,000 teams in 80 countries play Little League. The rules have changed a bit in 75 years. Little League used to be for 11- and 12-yearold boys only, but today, 13-year-olds are allowed in certain circumstances. Girls are allowed, too. This year, Mo’ne Davis from Philadelphia made a splash when she took the mound in the Little League World Series as the 18th girl to play in the series and the first female pitcher to throw a shutout, which means the opposing team did not score any runs against her team.

Ground surge leads Sentinels to win By ZACHARY WHITE zwhite@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – After giving up a touchdown late in the fourth quarter of Friday’s season opener, Westmont’s Sam Soltwisch and his cohorts on the defensive line smiled as they walked off the field. That’s because Chicago Christian’s final score had virtually no impact on a game Westmont won 56-34. “I was just thinking, hey,

this was an easy game, we’re undefeated, you know, rise up,” Soltwisch said. A rushing attack from Quintin Brown did a good job of putting the points on the board for the Sentinels, but it was the offensive line that made it possible. “I knew if Quintin got some holes he’d go, if he got some space in front of him he’s a great athlete. He’s got speed, and he got opportunities,” Westmont coach Otto Zeman

said. “The kids up front did it though.” Brown blew through the defensive line repeatedly, averaging more than 10 yards every time he touched the ball. After 259 rushing yards, four rushing touchdowns and a kickoff returned for a touchdown, Brown wasn’t interested in talking about himself. “They came down, they made their blocks and that’s why I got the amount of open field space,” Brown said of his blockers. “All

because of the offensive linemen, so I really thank them for doing their jobs.” Quarterback Kyle Domin joined the Sentinels’ rushing attack, adding 101 yards of his own along with three rushing touchdowns. He also passed for 75 yards. While Zeman and the Sentinels enjoyed the win, they will look to build upon their impressive Week 1 showing. “It’s a win, it’s a win,” Zeman said. “It wasn’t pretty,

but we did some things offensively. I think we surprised some people with what we can do offensively.” For a school that has not finished a season with a winning record since 2006, the players and fans left the game with copious amounts of energy. “We can celebrate this now, but we got to get right back to work tomorrow because we got to go right against Plano,” Brown said. “I told [the team] not to celebrate too much.”

WMP

nels are riding high after Quintin Brown and Kyle Domin spearheaded a dominant rushing attack in a decisive win to start the season. Now, Westmont hits the road for Plano, which is always a tough place to play. The Reapers lost to Yorkville 34-6 in the opener.

Edwards explodes in Downers North victory By JEFF DEGRAW msleditorial@shawmedia.com

Lorae Mundt - For Shaw Media

Downers Grove South’s Max Soderlund looks for running room during Friday’s game against Benet. The Redwings grabbed an early lead and held on for a 26-16 win.

Early lead lifts Benet over DGS By PAUL D. BOWKER msleditorial@shawmedia.com LISLE – The game really began in the Sznajder family backyard years ago. Jack would throw a football to his older brother Brad. He’d catch it, and the game was on. One day, they hoped, they’d be doing it in a real stadium wearing real football jerseys. That is precisely what happened Friday in Benet’s season-opening 26-16 win against Downers Grove South at Benedictine University. Brad, a senior, rushed for three touchdowns and 127 yards on the same night Jack, a sophomore, started his first varsity game. “It’s probably the coolest game of my life, I’d say, so far,” Brad said. “It was just awesome for me, for Jack, for my family to have this experience. That’s great.” Brad ran for touchdowns of six and seven yards in the first half as Benet grabbed an early 19-0 lead in the first half. He added a 34-yard score in the fourth quarter. Jack completed his first five passes and ran for 32 yards on his first offensive play. He wound up completing 9-of-18 passes for 83 yards. “As a sophomore, he’s just going to get better and better,” Benet coach Pat New said of Jack. “I expected him to make

a couple of mistakes because you’re a sophomore and that‘s what happens. He rose to the challenge. He’s a great competitor. I have total faith that he’ll just improve throughout the year.” The game was halted for more than an hour in the second quarter because of lightning, and it was after the storm had passed that Downers Grove South came alive. Ryan Taylor scored on the Mustangs’ first possession of the second half, finishing off a 63-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run. A 30-yard fumble return by Eric Denby for a score and a 36-yard field goal by Riley Heavey, all in the third quarter, closed Benet’s lead to 19-16. But even with two interceptions and a touchdown-saving tackle by Denby in the fourth quarter, the Mustangs weren’t able to score again. Jacob Baker, a senior, made his debut at tailback and rushed for 71 yards. “Jacob ran hard,” Downers Grove South coach Mark Molinari said. “It was his first night at tailback. We saw some good things. We’d like to see him do a few more things, but that will come with some experience. We’re asking a kid who was a quarterback and a tight end last year to play tailback. We like him. We’re going to stick with him.”

DOWNERS GROVE – David Edwards missed a significant amount of time last season before returning for Downers Grove North’s quarterfinal playoff game. He made up for lost time in this year’s season opener, which started Friday night and ended Saturday after weather delays. North won 31-20 as Edwards rushed for 177 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries. “He’s ready to go,” North head coach John Wander said. “We have a three-year quarterback and we’re expecting huge things from him. He did a nice job.” Edwards’ 6-foot-8 frame coupled with the Trojans’ sly option offense is a tough combo to stop. “He falls forward for three to four yards every carry,” first-year Lockport coach Dan Starkey said of Edwards. The end result was a plus for the Trojans, but it didn’t come without some turbulent moments. Before the delay Friday night, North’s initial drive stalled at the 25-yard line with a failed fourth down attempt. On the next play, Lockport senior quarterback Jeremy Quade ran 70 yards to the five yard line. Then he capped off the drive with a one-yard touchdown run Saturday evening to take a 6-0 lead with 6:08 to go in the first quarter. “We’re a very young defense and we need to get better,” Wander said. “The key to the game was we didn’t really turn the ball over. If we play that type of game with our offense and don’t turn the ball over, we give ourselves a good chance to win.” However, that was the last Porter lead of the game. North came right back with a 66-yard drive, with Edwards gaining 50 of those yards on five carries to take a 7-6 lead with 2:18 remaining in the first quarter. Lockport drove to North’s

Another Edwards touchdown just before halftime made it 21-6 and the lead expanded to 28-6 early in the third before Lockport scored again. “The kids are learning a new system with new coaches,” Starkey said. “We have to clean up the mistakes, we had opportunities, but I’m certainly proud of this team with the effort they gave.”

The first serve has gone up on the girls volleyball season, and teams across the state will eventually be vying for berths in the state finals at Redbird Arena in Normal on Nov. 14 and 15. Here’s the outlook for Benet, Downers Grove North, Downers Grove South and Westmont.

Outlook: The graduation of dominant hitter Katherine Mahlke, who is currently playing at Michigan, will certainly sting as her departure leaves huge void (313 kills, 35 blocks), but that is the only loss the Trojans suffered so

they hope to be just as productive this season. “Last year, our team was Katherine Mahlke surrounded by a bunch of sophomores,” head coach Mark Wasik said. “Everyone comes back with an additional year of club. We are a better team than last year and feel like we can go further than we did last year in the playoffs.” Five starters are back in the fold to lead the way. Grace Larson tallied 192 kills last season and figures to be a major attacking player on offense. Libero Selene Ushela (323 digs last year) will lead the defense, Mary Helen Beacom (751 assists) will set, and middle blockers Lexi May (119 kills, 70 blocks) and Madison Sturm (80 kills) will provide net presence. After going 4-2 in the tough West Suburban Silver last year, North will be looking to claim the title this time around. The WSS slate, plus a tournament schedule that

includes the Wheaton Classic, Waubonsie Valley’s Warrior Blast, Mother McAuley’s Asics Challenge and Glenbard East’s Autumnfest, will get the Trojans ready for the postseason grind.

Outlook: The Mustangs struggled at times last season

seven seniors graduate, four of whom were varsity starters for three seasons, including Haley Beuser (libero at DePaul) and Vanessa Possodoni (playing at Benedictine). The silver lining to the senior losses is that Westmont gets an influx of talent from a sophomore team that went 27-1 last year. The squad has already shown a fierce competitive side. “Our offense has the potential to be pretty strong and well distributed,” head coach Jennifer Gliwa-Bell said. “Our setter [Madeline Lubeck] is talented and is expected to run the offense quite well.” The Sentinels lost to eventual Class 2A champion IC Catholic in a regional championship match last year, and the current group will be primed for a similar playoff run by a tough regular season schedule that includes tournaments at Leyden, IMSA and Plano, which are comprised mostly of Class 3A and 4A teams.

Outlook: The Redwings graduated six starters from a team that made it to the state quarterfinals for the third consecutive year. Those kinds of losses might mean a rebuilding year for most programs, but Benet is not like most programs. The squad enters the season with six players who saw plenty of action last year. Rachael Fara, last year’s kills leader, is back and is committed to play in college at Northwestern. Other players with college offers include Natalie Canulli (Penn State), Meghan Weber (Wright State), and Tiffany Clark (Michigan, second in digs last season) who plays libero in club but will switch to outside hitter for the Redwings. Sara Neilson, Maria Cyvas and Dana Griffin return after playing extensively last year. A tough tournament schedule awaits the Redwings, but some of the stiffest competition may come in practice as players like Lauren Berto, Paige Hembrough, Lina Lietuvninkas, Lilly Johnson and Gretchen Rudel will be battling for varsity playing time. “We have a very deep team with lots of girls that will be pushing each other,” head

but won a postseason match and return a slew of players who gained valuable experience last year and who have improved in the offseason. Among the returners is outside hitter Katie Vondra, who fueled the offense last season. Middle hitter Cassie Lueken is also back, as are key defensive cogs Jess Faber and Hannah Wood. Senior newcomer Shannon Galway adds to the depth on defense. Setters Megan Muench and Renee Kryk both saw ample playing time last season. “I believe that with this group of girls and how hard they’ve been working all summer that our season will be an improvement from last year,” head coach Trisha Kurth said. “We are hoping to make some huge gains at the net this year and with our teamwork.”

36 CLASSIFIED • SDP • Wednesday, September 3, 2014 • Suburban Life / mysuburbanlife.com NOTICE TO TAXPAYERS – ASSESSED VALUE REVISIONS York Township, 2014 Assessed Values Median Level of Assessment: 33 1/3% Valuation Date: 01/01/2014 Relevant Real Estate Sales Information Used to Develop the Equalized Assessed Value: Sales Occurring Between 01/01/2011 – 12/31/2013 Your property is to be assessed at the above listed median level of assessment for the assessment district. You may check the accuracy of your assessment by dividing your assessment by the median level of assessment. The resulting value should equal the estimated fair cash value of your property. If the resulting value is greater than the estimated fair cash value of your property, you may be over-assessed. If the resulting value is less than the fair cash value of your property, you may be under-assessed. You may appeal your assessment to the Board of Review Illinois law requires assessed values of property, other than farmland and coal, are to be assessed of 33 1/3% of fair market value. Restrictions within Illinois law delay the change in property assessments caused by changes of actual property fair cash value. State law requires the assessed values are to be adjusted based upon data from the three prior calendar years before the assessment date. In appreciating markets, this forces current property assessments to lag behind recent sales prices, and in declining markets, the decline of assessed values is delayed.

Assessed values are one of the three variables which determine individual property tax amounts. The other two variables are homestead exemption amounts, if any, and property tax rates. Tax rates are determined from the budgets of all units of local government supplying services to your property. Your tax bill is calculated by multiplying the equalized assessment for your property (minus exemptions) by the tax rate. Homestead Exemptions available to Illinois property taxpayers include the General (Residential), Senior Citizens, Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze, Disabled Veterans’ Standard, Disabled Veterans (Adaptive Housing), Disabled Persons’, and the Returning Veterans’ homestead exemptions. You may review information describing these programs by visiting the Supervisor of Assessment’s website located at http://www.dupageco.org/SOA/ In accordance with the Illinois Compiled Statutes, Chapter 35, 200/9210, the following equalization factors have been applied by the Supervisor of Assessments to bring the assessment level to the current median level of assessment as stated above. All parcels including those listed below have been increased or decreased by applying these equalization factors. FARM CLASS Farm Land............................ 1.0000 Farm Buildings...................... 1.0000 Farm Homesites.................... 0.9861

Contact your local assessor’s office to review your assessment if you believe the fair cash value is incorrect or you are not assessed uniformly with comparable properties in your neighborhood.
