approval from the city and the DuPage County Health Department, Adamowski said. While the library brings the final pieces of the cafe puzzle together, it also will oversee the building of a new freeplay area for children in its basement. Children’s Services Department head Janet Dumas said the project will be funded and constructed through the Wheaton Rotary Club. It will feature miniature versions of a farmer’s market and workshop as well as a puppet stage. Its aim will be twofold, Dumas said – first, to give children a place to practice their social skills and use their imagination to get them ready for school, and second, like the cafe, to help make the library a destination. “All these things they are developing are laying the foundation for being ready to read when kids start kindergarten – all these skills they learn with free play,” she said. “We want libraries to be a place where they are more than a place to check out library materials. We want it to be a place where you can drop in at any time of day and do something.” Wheaton Rotary Club President John Wilt said member and carpenter Tom Newman will handle the woodwork for the project and volunteers will assist in the construction during the next six months. He said when recent Rotarian Adamowski approached the club with a grant proposal, it was easy to provide manpower and a $5,000 donation. He said he believes the new space will bring families together and show them what the library can offer. He also said the space was particularly valuable in light of the changing demographics in Wheaton, which includes a sizable population of schoolchildren in Community Unit School District 200 receiving free or reduced lunches. “If they can’t afford to eat, they can’t afford to buy books and learning toys and things like that,” he said. “By supporting this, we are helping get them ready for school.”

Sharing their story Now the family has begun to lead the charge to educate others and find treatments for children. In January, Chase was named one of five ambassadors from across the country for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Jane Hoppen, the foundation’s director of family relations, said the ambassadors are chosen from more than 3,700 honored children on the nonprofit’s website from families who are willing to share their stories. “They help build a connection – this is a real-life child that has gone through this or a family that is going through it or a family who have lost

Today, Chase still has thin hair and visible scars and occasionally carries his “chemo duck” around with him, but is a rambunctious and talkative student at Washington Elementary who play fights with his siblings constantly. Last Saturday, the family got to attend its first event as an ambassador family, a head-shaving event in Arlington Heights. Chase got to shave the head of older brother Aidan, who raised more than $10,000 in a week and a half after St. Baldrick’s spread his fundraising page. “It was the coolest thing, watching all these people come together to support the foundation,” Ellie said. “We just want to be whatever they need us to be ... our goal is to educate by presence and conversation.”

WHEATON – Few families are ready to handle their child being diagnosed with a life-threatening disease at age 2. Far fewer are willing to share their story with the world. The Ewoldt family in Wheaton are taking their experiences and those of pediatric brain cancer survivor and 5-year-old Chase and telling them as one of the six St. Baldrick’s Foundation 2015 ambassadors. Chase – the third of four children – was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive brain and spinal cancer in 2012. “It was scary, we didn’t know what was going to happen to him,” said sister Darcy, now 8, who found her brother seizing late one night. “I didn’t even really know what cancer was.” The young boy was checked into the hospital for more than 100 of the next 200 days, part of a 14-month stretch of chemo and radiation, said his mother, Ellie Ewoldt. Chase needed 16 surgeries and had as many as five chemo treatments at once. The process took a toll in more ways than one. “When Chase first lost his hair, every time he turned his head he would leave a clump of it on his pillow,” his mother said. “When you go through cancer treatment, you have to hurt them to try to save their lives.” Most of the medicines and treatments Chase received were originally designed for adults. They caused a lot of damage, Ellie said. He couldn’t eat solid food for months due to sores on his throat and stomach, his spine will likely never fully develop and he struggles with emotional, memory and other neurological problems. More than 95 percent of childhood cancer survivors will have a chronic health problem by the time they are 45 because of the treatments they received, according to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation website. The treatments also worked. Chase was given his first all-clear in August 2013, though he will likely have to be

nlurz@shawmedia.com WHEATON – This St. Patrick’s Day, Wheaton is home to royalty. Lauren Corry, a Wheaton resident and art teacher at Edison Middle School, will be queen of the Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade, sponsored by Chicago Plumbers Local 130 UA. Each year, women of Irish ancestry from ages 18 to 28 can compete to be the queen or a member of the court. Corry won her title in January, and it includes two round-trip tickets to Ireland, $1,500 cash, jewelry, Waterford crystal and Eli’s cheesecake. She has been on the court since 2010, and her family has roots in Kilkee in County Clare, Ireland. Corry recently spoke to Suburban Life about her Irish ancestry and experience in the pageant.

It was important to me because I come from an Irish family. My dad is 100-percent Irish, and I know how much it would mean for my grandpa and my family. My first year doing it I didn’t know what to expect – there were 160-some girls coming out but I made it and I made some of the best friends I’ve ever made. We even went
to Ireland together in 2013. That’s why I keep wanting to come back – why would I not want to meet more people and network and have fun? Lurz: Had you ever done a pageant before getting involved with this? Corry: Not really, but I’ve been a cheerleader my whole life. So I’m used to smiling a lot, and I’m short, so I’m used to walking in heels. But they’re really looking for people who are good at public speaking, who can reach out and be good role models. It’s more about personality. Lurz: Was watching the parade a big deal for you or your family growing up? Corry: Yeah, as a little kid we used to go all the time. My dad had an office overlooking the parade that we would go up in

MacNeill Foundation dodgeball tournament receives support from law enforcement and firefighters
By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com WHEATON – For the third year, students and faculty from across Community School District 200 came together on the dodgeball court March 5 to raise money for the Ross K. MacNeill Foundation. The foundation, founded in 2013, is aimed at fighting pediatric brain cancer after the disease took the life of 11-yearold Franklin Middle School student Ross MacNeill. This year’s event nearly doubled in size since last year, encompassing more than 400 students, Franklin Assistant Principal Joe Kish said. POLICE REPORTS
Q & A with the Hearing Doctor Link between CKD and hearing loss?
Q: I heard that there is a connection between chronic kidney problems and hearing loss. Is this true?
A: Yes this is true. he National Kidney Foundation has published Dr. Terri Lightbody indings in the (630) 580-5777 American Journal of Kidney Diseases that found those with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) reported some level of hearing loss. Nearly 30% of those showed severe hearing loss. Study Author Professor David C. Harris states “he link can be explained by structural and functional similarities between tissues in the inner ear and in the kidney. Additionally, toxins that accumulate in kidney failure can damage the nerves, including those in the inner ear. Another reason for this connection is that kidney disease and hearing loss share common risk factors, including diabetes, high-
blood pressure and advanced age.” he National Kidney Foundation recommends that those with CKD have their hearing evaluated to ensure a better quality of life. Ensuring better quality of life can strengthen ties with family and friends, raise your spirits, help you feel better about yourself and keep your mind sharp. hose who are exposed to risk factors such as CKD, high-blood pressure, smoking, obesity or family history of hearing loss are encouraged to get a baseline hearing test from an Audiologist. Hearing evaluations are typically covered by most insurance plans. March is National Kidney Month. More information about Chronic Kidney Diseases can be found at www.kidney.org, including the study referenced above.
About the author: Dr. Terri Lightbody is a nationally known Audiologist and has her private practice at Danada Professional Center. Dr. Lightbody is the recipient of the 2014 Wheaton Star Award, in recognition of her volunteer and community service work. She is a member of the Wheaton Lions Club, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping those with hearing loss and low vision. She is the forerunner in today’s most advanced hearing devices.

A second West Chicago teen involved in the killing of a Wheaton man has been sentenced – this time to 14 years in prison, the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office announced in a news re- Alejandro lease. Martinez Alejandro Martinez, 19, of West Chicago, pleaded guilty to armed violence Tuesday. Two other men also faced charges in connection with the death. Anthony Rios, 19, of West Chicago, pleaded guilty to the same charge March 3. He was sentenced to 17 years in prison. Jonathan Jimenez, 21, of Aurora, is being held in the DuPage County Jail on a $1 million bond, according to the release.
Martinez, Rios and Jimenez, who were believed to be members of the Satan Disciples gang, were at a party Nov. 17, 2013, at Pomeroy Street near Route 59 in West Chicago with 22-year-old Thomas Tecuatl, who was thought to be a member of the rival Surenos 13 gang. A dispute occurred between the two groups, according to the release, and Tecuatl brandished a knife before leaving. The three defendants chased after Tecuatl, beat him and Jimenez allegedly used Tecuatl’s knife to fatally stab him. Tecuatl lay outside more than five hours before his body was discovered. Jimenez is scheduled to appear in court April 6. He is charged with six counts of first-degree murder and two counts of mob action. He faces a possible sentence of up to natural life in prison.

Bridge pays special attention to survivors of domestic abuse Recently, we’ve seen incidents of domestic violence highlighted in the media more than ever. While no one enjoys seeing this kind of news, the result of the additional media attention has been more awareness of just how widespread domestic violence is. In fact, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in the United States: COMMUNITY • More than 31 percent VOICE of women have been physiLisa cally abused by an intimate partner at some point in their Doyle lives. • Physical abuse against women results in 1.8 million injuries per year. • Half of women have suffered from emotional/psychological abuse. At Bridge Communities, we know all too well about domestic abuse – each year, about half the clients entering our Transitional Housing Program are abuse survivors. The abuse often played a major role in their becoming homeless; some Bridge families escaped their partner’s violence by fleeing with their children to a shelter while others were thrown out of their homes in a fit of rage. We know Bridge families have been through incredible hardships, and we never minimize their lasting toll either. That’s why one of our partners is Stepping Stones, a Rosellebased organization committed to empowering domestic abuse survivors and creating a path to safety. Every year, mentors and volunteers from Stepping Stones support several Bridge families as they rebuild their lives. In addition to the programming we offer to clients as they shape their futures, such as job assistance, mentoring and tutoring, we also offer free weekly counseling to any client that wants help reconciling with their pasts. On April 24, Bridge’s fifth annual spring luncheon, “Celebrating Women, Transforming Lives,” will pay special attention to survivors of domestic abuse. You won’t want to miss their inspirational stories of resilience in moving forward in their lives. Please join us at Danada House in Wheaton as we celebrate their strength and courage. Tickets for the Celebrating Women, Transforming Lives spring luncheon are available on www.bridgecommunities.org.

Drumbeat of bad news vindicates COD faculty When a union can’t see eye to eye with the leadership of the organization that employs its members, there could be any number of factors at play. Sometimes unions have unrealistic expectations. Sometimes there’s just a clash of personalities. Sometimes a leader making needed changes ruffles some feathers along the way. The College of DuPage Faculty Association’s beef with school President Robert Breuder and the Board of Trustees may include some of those elements. But on balance, the faculty members have largely been vindicated. The faculty registered a vote of no confidence in Breuder in September; in the months since then, pretty much everyone else has joined them in that opinion. The recitation of the failures in leadership at the College of DuPage has become routine yet still shocking. A leaked email suggesting playing games with state money. Fraud at WDCB, the college radio station. Battles over whether imprest payments require auditing. Breuder’s free meals at the money-losing Waterleaf restaurant on campus. And to top it all off, the generous $762,000 in severance that Breuder will get when he vacates his post in disgrace in 2016. David Good, managing editor dgood@shawmedia.com 630-427-6270
Compared to all that, the faculty’s concerns lodged in September can sound almost petty at first: “We don’t feel inspired by [Breuder] as a leader,” said Glenn Hansen, president of the faculty association. There are a lot of people in a lot of jobs feeling less than inspired by their bosses. It’s a common refrain. But in this case, we know now there was actual bad management behind the complaint. Given what we’ve learned, who could blame Hansen and the faculty members for not feeling inspired? Breuder’s response to the faculty’s vote only cements that they knew what they were talking about. “Factual accuracy has never been important to the Senate leadership,” he wrote in a response made public recently. “It does not support their irresponsible and unfounded accusations.” Strong words, given Breuder’s email that exposed him as someone who finds no issue with bending the truth when it suits him. Next month, voters will get to pick three members for the College of DuPage Board of Trustees. There are a lot of candidates running. Residents would be wise to keep in mind the recent leadership dysfunction when making their selections.

For the sake of our children, we need to make changes to the District 41 School Board. I, for one, am so disheartened by the lack of respect and sometimes adversary nature the current board has for parents. I am disheartened by the cavalier attitude taken by the current board toward the values of this community. I don’t wish to have a board that rubber-stamps everything I want. I want a board that fosters a true partnership between the school and the parents. We need to elect new board members that will provide us with a voice, transparency, common sense, data driven, child-focused direction and taxpayer accountability.

Q: A:
Dentistry I’ve been hearing a lot about xylitol lately. What it is and can it benefit my teeth?
Xylitol is a natural sweetener derived from the fibrous parts of plants. It does not break down like sugar and can help keep a neutral pH level in the mouth. Xylitol also prevents Charise M. Petrelli DDS bacteria from sticking to the teeth. This is how it protects the teeth from tooth decay. With Xylitol, the acid attack that would otherwise last for over half an hour is stopped. Tooth decay happens when bacteria in your mouth consume the sugars we eat. When you eat food containing ordinary sugar (sucrose), it gives bacteria on your teeth energy, allowing them to multiply and start making acids that can eat away the enamel on the teeth. This “acid attack” causes tooth decay and cavities to begin to form. Because the bacteria in the mouth that are causing cavities are unable to digest xylitol, their growth is greatly reduced. The number of acid-producing bacteria may fall as much as 90%. No acid is formed because the pH of saliva and plaque does not fall. After taking xylitol, the bacteria do not stick well on the surface of the teeth and as a result, the amount of plaque decreases. Research has shown that the use of xylitol also helps repair damage to the enamel. Saliva in itself protects the mouth and teeth. Stimulated saliva in particular contains all the components needed to repair early cavities. If sugar is only taken a couple of times a day, the saliva can do the job alone. But most people take sugar so often that the mouth’s own defensive tools are not enough. Saliva that has xylitol is more alkaline than saliva stimulated by other sugar products. After taking xylitol products, the concentration of basic amino acids and ammonia in saliva and plaque may rise, and plaque pH rises as well. When pH is above 7, calcium and phosphate salts in saliva start to move into those parts of enamel that are weak. Therefore, soft, calcium-deficient enamel sites begin to harden again. 577 Pennsylvania Avenue Suite 100, Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 I recommend 3 easy steps to incorporate xylitol into your daily regimen: 1. Use Xylitol toothpaste, mouthwash, and nasal spray upon waking up (630) 942-0727 2. After breakfast, lunch & dinner use Xylitol gum, mints or candy www.glenellyndentistry.com 3. Use Xylitol toothpaste, mouthwash, and nasal spray before going to bed www.facebook.com/glenellyndentistrypc adno=S0253707

Patrons often run into Hall of Famer Frank Thomas at his Big Hurt Brewhouse in Berwyn.
Barbecued pulled pork provides a decadent touch to an order of BHB mac and cheese. Bacon and avocado add big flavor to the salmon BLT sandwich, accom- crispiness. Meanwhile, the pork was very tender. We both panied by sweet potato fries. To start, my friend ordered the house BHB Honey Girl beer, which is an American Hefeweizen that was tasty and, importantly for a wheat beer, not too sweet. There are several BHB beers, and a fairly wide selection of other craft and domestic brews available
on tap. For the appetizer, we chose the BHB smothered fries, which feature crispy fries, pulled pork, giardiniera and Monterey Jack cheese. I’m typically quite picky with fries, but these had a coating that captured the desired
agreed the giardiniera could have used more heat, but my friend thought the appetizer was a standout. Next up, I went with the BHB BBQ pulled pork mac and cheese. Not only is the name a mouthful, but it’s a big portion. Normally, I’m a purist when it comes to mac
and cheese, but the bacon and pulled pork were surprisingly good additions. First off, the mac and cheese had the proper creaminess, gooeyness and mix of colors to show that there are multiple cheeses at work. Throw in the crispy, crunchy bacon and that would have made for a great meal on its own. The pork was good, again, but the sweet barbecue sauce didn’t quite sync with the savory cheese for my personal taste. So, I ended up basically eating bacon mac and cheese with a side of pulled pork, and enjoyed both that way. My friend ordered a salmon BLT sandwich with sweet potato fries and also had positive things to report. The bacon and avocado flavorfully complemented the mild fish to make for another winner. The menu has a wide variety from barbecue to pasta dishes, seafood, salads, sandwiches and pizza flatbreads, more than deserving of another run around the pub’s culinary bases.

BERWYN – Heading to a restaurant named after one of my childhood heroes was an exciting prospect, and the food at Big Hurt Brewhouse did not disappoint. Athletes breaking into the restaurant business is nothing new. In many cases, their involvement varies, determining how large a role they play in the success of the enterprise. A big name on the front of the building is nice, but that alone won’t keep a restaurant afloat. I am pleased to report Frank Thomas was in the building – and left this White Sox fan a bit stunned at the sight of the Hall of Famer. He runs an attractive restaurant/ sports bar that provided my companion and me with good food and drink. A scattering of Frank Thomas memorabilia brings back some cherished memories, capped by an impressive replica of the statue of the slugger displayed at the ballpark. The pub is on the southwest corner of Cermak Road and Oak Park Avenue in Berwyn, which means tons of eyeballs get to see the bright white lights that say Big Hurt Brewhouse on a daily basis. Upon entering, my immediate reaction was: “Ooo, this is kind of fancy.” My casual tastes can just as easily be satisfied in a dive bar or a diner, but it does feel good to walk into a place that puts some effort into the ambience. The pub is housed in a historic bank building, and still sports a vault, as well as the elaborately embellished dome that draws the eye upward like a baseball headed to the stratosphere. It’s definitely fancy enough for a date night but remains a casual sports bar perfect to watch a game with some friends over drinks. There are enough TVs that you will never have a bad view if you want to catch a game. And the staff the night I visited was on the ball enough to pipe in the audio right at the Blackhawks game’s first faceoff.

Goal Setting to reach your full potential Everyone has a starting point. Whether you are a novice or experienced athlete, we all are looking to improve in one way or another. That improvement might be to lose weight, to place in your age group in a local or national race, or simply to improve your fitness. Setting goals will give you motivation and boosts self-confidence. Having those goals, adjusting, and learning how to set them can help you achieve them. Ryan Giuliano started from not knowing how to swim in college to becoming the top ranked amateur Ironman athlete in the world in 2015. It has required him to set many short term and long term goals and keeping motivated and disciplined to attain them. He will discuss how to plan goals out and follow through to meet them.

Falcons fall in regional final Loss concludes 20-win season for Wheaton North basketball squad By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com AURORA – Wheaton North had overcome virtually every obstacle thrown in front of it this winter. But playing West Aurora on the Blackhawks home court in a Class 4A regional final Friday proved too much of a challenge for the Falcons, who saw their season come to an end with a 65-50 loss. Wheaton North, which finished with a record of 206, led shortly after halftime and trailed by just four points early in the fourth quarter before the home team pulled away. “We couldn’t really put the ball in the basket during some stretches,” Wheaton North coach Dave Brackmann said. “We were giving up easy baskets on one end and struggling to score on the other end and it got away from us. “But I’m so proud of this team and it has nothing to do with the 20 wins. This group was exactly what I want a Wheaton North basketball group to be like, as people, as teammates and of course as players.” Senior Nick Traversa topped the visitors with 20 points and fellow senior Jake Heggeland also reached double figures with 11. That duo, along with fellow senior

Others who played their final game in a Wheaton North uniform were John Johnson, Andrew Brady and Mitch Biegalski. “It is such a great group of seniors,” Brackmann said. “Just their leadership and the way they carried themselves each day; they were great role models for the program and they will be sorely missed. It’s going to be tough to walk in the gym next year and not see those guys.” On the flip side, a trio of sophomores in Luke Anthony, Rowan McGowen and Erik Mueller got valuable playing time this winter (Anthony started at shooting guard) and will lead the Falcons next season. “The bar has been set as far as how you have to work,” the coach said. “They know what we have to do. Just keep working at it and come back strong.”

Spartans can’t shake Raiders St. Francis squad unable to get past regional semifinal By DEREK WOLFF editorial@mysuburbanlife.com AURORA – St. Francis boys basketball player Daniel Malek took an elbow above the eye in the second quarter of the March 4 playoff game, a wound that required a hospital visit for stitches after the game. That play personified the slugfest between the Spartans and Glenbard South, which edged St. Francis 61-56 in a Class 3A IMSA regional semifinal. With the lead changing hands 10 times in the second half, Glenbard South ultimately bested the Spartans (15-12), who refused to go quietly despite trailing for almost the entirety of the final 16 minutes. “Sometimes shots fall, sometimes they don’t. I just thought that our kids just kept coming back and coming back,” Spartans coach Bob Ward said. “We looked like we were dead in the water two or three times in that fourth quarter, and we kept tipping balls out and getting extra shots. I thought we really put pressure on them defensively, but that’s just the way it falls sometimes. They’re a tough team to guard; they’ve got good perimeter kids.” Down 57-53 with 20 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Malek – who returned minutes after being patched up – dished one of his four second-half assists out to junior forward Nick Cooney, whose three cut the gap to a single point. St. Francis’ double-team on the inbounds pass forced a turnover, sending Gabriel Johnson to the line down a point with 16.9 to play, shooting two. He missed both. The Raiders made both their free throws on the ensuing foul. Malek dribbled the ball to the baseline and his pass, looking for Cooney, was picked off. “We set something up with

“If there was an effort award, I thought we would have gotten it, but that doesn’t get you to the regional final. Very, very proud of the kids though. I’ve never had a better group. They’re resilient.” Bob Ward Glenbard South coach three potential shooters and we weren’t able to get it to him,” Ward said. “But that’s not Dan’s fault. They guarded it well.” The Spartans and Raiders sides traded the lead back and forth in the second quarter, which ended with the Raiders clinging to a 27-26 lead. The Spartans never led by more than a bucket in the second half but fought back from a nine-point deficit in the third quarter to stay in the game, then a six-point deficit with under three minutes to have a chance for the win. “I thought we had hustle points all game,” Ward said. “If there was an effort award, I thought we would have got-
ten it, but that doesn’t get you to the regional final. Very, very proud of the kids though. I’ve never had a better group. They’re resilient.” Senior Mike Shaw led the Spartans with 25 points, while Sullivan added 14. “The whole time we knew we were in it, that we had a chance,” Shaw said. “The entire time.” The loss was a reflection of the season at large, Shaw said. “That’s how the whole season has been, ups and downs. That’s what Coach Ward talks about, ups and downs and you have to rebound from the downs and keep going on the highs.”
