nlurz@shawmedia.com WHEATON – Incumbent John Prendiville has retained his seat on the Wheaton City Council and political newcomer Suzanne Fitch handily won her bid to join the body. Fitch received more than 40 percent of the vote and Prendiville got 35.5 percent, raking in a combined 7,522 of the 9,909 votes cast in the April 7 election, ac- Suzanne cording to preliminary Fitch results from the DuPage County Election Commission. “I’m very pleased with the result – this was a team effort,” Fitch said. “I could not have done it without the help of so many friends and supporters.” Fitch, who served on the city’s plan-

ning and zoning board, said she felt her fiscal conservatism won her the spot. “I feel like my message of fiscal responsibility and transparency in government really John resonated with voters,” Prendiville she said. “I tried to put my experience and my qualities out there, and I think it was received well by the voters.” She said her top priority as a council member is to maintain the financial strength of the city. Fitch will be the sole woman on the council when she assumes office but said “there have been many great women who have served ... before me and they have been excellent mentors for me.” Prendiville, who will serve his third term, said he was “gratified” for the

vote of confidence. He said he believes residents saw his commitment to the job. He said potential state cuts in municipal funding will be the biggest issue for the new council. “We will be addressing ... issues emanating from Springfield and the potential cuts – and I think probable cuts – in our revenue and how we are going to handle financing the capital expenditures we want to make over the next five to 10 years,” he said. Prendiville said Fitch would be a good fit on the council and looked forward to working with her.

WHEATON – Two incumbents and a familiar face to Community Unit School District 200 won seats on the district’s board of education Tuesday, according to preliminary numbers from the DuPage County Election Commission. District 200 PTA President and first-time candidate Chris Crabtree led the pack with 5,287 votes on elec- Chris tion night, with Crabtree incumbent Jim Gambaiani taking a close second with 5,069 votes. Board Vice President Jim Vroman barely Jim held on to his Gambaiani seat, beating challenger Judith Zapf by a scant 249 votes. Crabtree, who was previously a teacher in the district and has chil- Jim Vroman dren in the school system, said Tuesday she was still trying to process the support and said she was humbled by the experience. “I’ve made it very public that I was not running on any form of an agenda – I was running to continue to serve in a different capacity in the district,” she said. “I’ve always been about kids first, that’s been my mes-

its finances. He said he looked forward to working with Vroman and Crabtree to manage expenses and grow student achievement. Vroman listed possible state revenue shortfalls and redistribution and updates to the Jefferson Early Childhood Center as high priorities for his term, which he has pledged would be his final. “I have told others that being on the school board since I retired is the best job I could possibly have, so I am pleased I can do this for four more years,” he said. “I know we have challenges but we also have a lot of good things, so I am very optimistic.” Zapf, who followed the election with longtime friend Crabtree at a shared election night party, said she was thankful for the support and promised to continue to work to improve the district. She said losing to Vroman by a few percentage points while seeing Crabtree win was a bittersweet moment on many levels. “I have worked with Jim Vroman in Engage 200 and as the night wore on ... and I saw we were neck and neck, I had very mixed feelings because Jim had done an outstanding job,” she said. “Part of me wanted to win but another part very much didn’t want him to lose. I could not lose to a nicer guy who has done great things.” Crabtree said she hoped to see Zapf run again in two years for a seat. Fourth candidate Gary Tonn did not respond for comment.

Clean Slate candidates sweep COD race By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – The College of DuPage Board of Trustees will soon be looking at a Clean Slate. The trio of candidates that campaigned under the name the Clean Slate and received significant support from Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton swept the April 7 election. D e a n n e M a z z o c h i Charles came in the lead with Bernstein 42,903 votes, according to preliminary reports from the DuPage County Election Commission and the Will and Cook county clerks. Frank Napolitano followed with 34,011 votes. Charles Bernstein was third with 28,352 votes. All candidates will commit to 6-year terms on the board. The slate won all three seats in DuPage and Will counties and two out of three in Cook County, with incum-

bents Nancy Svoboda and Kim Savage pushing Bernstein into fifth place. Following the trio was former state representative Sandra Pihos Frank with 26,966 votes. O t h e r c a n d i d a t e s Napolitano included: Dan Bailey, Claire Ball, David Carlin, Matt Gambs, Roger Kempa and Joseph Wozniak. After a long and tumultuous campaign that saw candidates field questions on topics including lack of transparency with the current board, public discontentment with college President Robert Breuder and accusations of financial wrongdoing at the school, the incoming trustees believe the taxpayers are more than ready for change. “Tonight, they gave us a clear mandate to clean up the College of DuPage,” said Mazzochi, Napolitano and Bernstein in a statement distributed election night. “To put an end to the

attitude that has persisted there that taxpayers don’t count, and insiders rule. To finally stop the waste, fraud and abuse. To end business as usual and to truly put taxpayers, students and faculty Deanne ahead of the insider in- Mazzochi terests that have dominated this board and this school for too long.” Napolitano said the race was all about the need for reform and emphasized the election of the Clean Slate shows taxpayers are ready for something new. “The voters have spoken,” he said. “They had a choice. Although they had 12 candidates to choose from, they really only had two choices: They had a choice for reform or they had a choice for the status quo. They chose reform with all three positions they elected tonight.” Napolitano said one of the first tasks the slate will address is the need for a

requested audit of state money spent at the school, which the college’s board has yet to take action on funding. “I definitely think that we need to work to approve the state audit,” he said. “I think we need to cooperate with all the investigations going on right now.” The election was one of the most controversial in the school’s history, as the board has recently received criticism for approving a $763,000 buyout for Breuder and hiring a $250 per hour public relations firm for communications counsel. Bernstein underscored the vision of the slate at a previous forum. “Our vision is to provide our students with the skills and education to be competitive in a 21st century economy,” he said. “In order to do that, we have to stop the corruption, integrate the faculty and pay a good compensation to attract the best faculty.” Neither Mazzochi nor Bernstein responded to requests for comment on election night.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA An Aurora man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after beating and fatally stabbing a Wheaton man after a dispute at a party in West Chicago, according to a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office. Jonathan Jimenez, 21, pleaded guilty April 2 to first-degree murder, the release stated. Judge Daniel Guerin handed down the sentence. Jimenez was one of three charged in connection with the 2013 death of 22-year-old Thomas Tecuatl, according to the release. Between midnight and 1 a.m. Nov. 17, the trio attended a party on Pomeroy Street near Route 59, where Tecuatl also was present, the release stated. A conflict occurred at the party and Tecuatl pulled a

knife, according to the release. He then left the party and was chased by several people, including Jimenez and his Jonathan co-defendants, Jimenez Alejandro Martinez and Anthony Rios, both 19 and of West Chicago. Jimenez, Martinez and Rios are reputed members of the Satan Disciples gang and Tecuatl was thought to be affiliated with the Surenos 13 gang. Some involved in the chase armed themselves with items including a pickax, pipe, bricks and bottles, the release stated. As Tecuatl fled, he slipped and fell on the wet pavement, at which time the three began beating him, according to the release. While he lay on the street, Jimenez took Tecuatl’s knife and fatally stabbed him,

before the trio returned to the party. A resident contacted police after finding Tecuatl’s body about 6:45 a.m. on his front lawn, the release stated. Martinez and Rios both pleaded guilty to one count of armed violence and were sentenced by Guerin last month to 14 and 17 years in prison, respectively, according to the release. “It is my sincerest hope that with Mr. Jimenez’s admission of guilt and sentencing, the family and friends of Mr. Tecuatl will now be able to find some measure of closure in this horrible chapter in their lives,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in the release. Jimenez must serve 100 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole, the release stated. He will receive credit for 502 days spent in custody.

WHEATON – A Wheaton house undergoing a remodel caught fire March 31, causing a worker on the site to be injured, according to a city news release. The Wheaton Fire Department was dispatched about 8:30 p.m. to 706 S. Gables Blvd. and discovered a blaze in the kitchen of the home, the release stated. The flames were brought under control within minutes. The house was undergoing remodeling and was occupied by a worker at the time of the fire, according to the release,

who received a minor injury. The worker was treated and transported to a local hospital. The cause of the fire was deemed accidental and appeared to have been related to solvents used to strip cabinets in the kitchen, the release stated. The ignition source was undetermined and damage was confined to the kitchen. Damage estimates were not immediately available. The department reminds residents to take extra precaution when using flammable liquids and to store them in well-ventilated areas away from ignition sources.

Both more than tripled the vote total of their challengers, attorney Ron Almiron and former school psychologist Tony Lyons, who received 14.2 percent and 9.9 percent of the vote, respectively. Almiron declined to comment before speaking to the other candidates. Lyons thanked those who worked on his campaign and said they had done what they needed to do, but it wasn’t quite enough to win. “The citizens of Wheaton have

He said he believed the city was headed in the right direction and looked forward to serving again with whoever won. “In general, the council is a copacetic group that has the best interests of Wheaton at heart,” he said.

Generous neighbors OUR VIEW provide 40 years of State senators seeing signs hope, opportunity of hope in Springfield This year, People’s Resource Center is celebrating its 40th anniversary. We also are celebrating another major milestone – our new building at 104 Chestnut Ave. in Westmont is now open. I wish to thank the many generous neighbors whose donations have made it possible for us to open this second location COMMUNITY for providing food, clothing, educational programs and VOICE much more for DuPage Kim residents who are struggling Perez with poverty. We continue to seek donations to support the new center, visit www.peoplesrc.org/homeforgood if you’d like to help. Since 1975, we’ve been bringing neighbors together to respond to hunger and poverty in DuPage County. That first year, 40 volunteers started People’s Resource Center in the basement of a small house. They organized their friends and family to donate bags of groceries and fed 125 hungry families. Last year, more than 2,000 volunteers served in PRC’s two centers in Wheaton and Westmont as well as more than 30 community partner locations across DuPage County. We distributed more than 2.6 million pounds of food. We provided more than 25,500 hours of educational opportunities that empower people to find work and develop the skills needed to achieve self-sufficiency. We helped more than 9,000 families. All the while, we’ve remained grounded in grassroots community support. PRC’s founders envisioned doing so much more for the community than just sharing food with the hungry, as important as that is. They wanted to help people overcome the isolating experience of being poor in the suburbs. They sought to build a community that could transcend the socioeconomic differences that so often divide us. During 40 years of People’s Resource Center history, that vision has become a reality. We are so grateful for the generous neighbors whose donations and volunteer work make it all possible. Every day, people from all walks of life are finding new hope and opportunity. Check out www.peoplesrc. org/homeforgood to find information about tours – I welcome you to come visit our new building in Westmont and see for yourself.

To hear state Sens. Michael Connelly and Chris Nybo describe it, there’s a new mood in Springfield. Connelly and Nybo, who between them represent most of DuPage County in the Illinois Legislature, stopped by the Suburban Life newsroom the other day to chat about what’s going on in Springfield and their priorities for the immediate future. One of the things that stood out during the discussion was their assertion that there’s an entirely new atmosphere at the state capitol. To some degree that’s to be expected whenever there’s a change in the governor’s office – was anyone sorry to see Rod Blagojevich depart, regardless of who replaced him? – but what Connelly and Nybo described was an environment where true bipartisanship has a chance to thrive. Imagine that, in Springfield of all places. Connelly and Nybo described how Gov. Bruce Rauner has made it a habit to share meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner – with legislators of both parties, on a regular basis. Connelly mentioned he has access to the governor via text message (one imagines that’s a privilege that would be quickly revoked if it was abused) and said that’s common now, and a far cry from his previous lack of access. You don’t have to think back very far to remember dissension not only between

the parties, but within the parties in Springfield. Conflict between then-Gov. Pat Quinn and House Speaker Michael Madigan led to the watered-down pension reform law that seems likely to meet its demise in the courts. With Republicans reduced to a superminority and needing only Democratic votes to pass legislation and a Democratic governor in office, it was still excruciatingly difficult for meaningful bills to get passed. A cynic might see Rauner’s overtures and dismiss it as mere window-dressing designed to elicit responses like this very editorial. But that would be a great length to go to just to fool some newspaper editors. Plus, the recent bipartisan effort to close a $1.6 billion gap in the 2015 budget, keeping state services and programs from shutting down, certainly showed a willingness of the two parties to work together, no matter how you feel about the deal itself. It’s no surprise Connelly and Nybo, both Republicans, feel a sense of optimism now that their party controls one of the branches of state government. But the available evidence, so far, seems to support their assertion that there really is a difference in the way things are being done now. We can only hope this will continue, with the 2016 budget on the horizon and a likely need for another stab at pension reform. From here, the issues only get more difficult to tackle.

Full-day kindergarten conundrum What’s all this talk of late about full-day kindergarten all over the place? Kindergarten was never meant to be a full day. It was supposed to be an introduction to schooling for the young child. A full day is too long for the young child. What’s going to happen is the children are going to learn to hate school because they’re there too long. It seems to be that the backers of full-day kindergarten are the parents who want to work instead of being home with their children. My theory is that if you cannot afford to spend time at home with your children and just have one parent working, then maybe you shouldn’t be having children.

Who is watching out for students, faculty and staff at the College of DuPage? Kathy Hamilton appears to be the only board member that cares! Now we have yet another scandal. It appears as though the Foundation Board that is supposed to be raising private funding for the college is only raising the funding for their own pockets. … Talk about a conflict of interest! This is all from the president on down to the radio station and the board members – power gone bad!

I’m not surprised with the recent onslaught of negative stories at COD. Many times as a manufacturing employer, I participated in COD Technical Center Job Fairs, Career Fairs and I walked the halls of the professors sharing my job descriptions for excellent entry level technical positions starting at more than $18 per hour. I told the professors to give me their top 10 students and they would have a job offer within a week. After numerous attempts on my part, not once did I ever receive a resume or a response from a professor. … COD has a wonderful Tech Center, but I thought the purpose of these centers was to find students jobs after they receive the skills.

Connelly, Nybo talk state budget, COD Senators also discuss legislative priorities during visit to Suburban Life By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Though last week was all about the lead up to Tuesday’s municipal elections, a number of statewide issues continue to circle over the collective heads of local voters. State Sens. Michael Connelly, R-Lisle, and Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, visited Suburban Life Media’s office in Downers Grove on Friday to discuss their legislative priorities, the state budget and the College of DuPage.

Rauner budget proposal One of the biggest questions in the state is its budget. A major part of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s election platform involved making tough decisions to financially Michael stabilize Illinois. Now, the legislature, Connelly municipalities, school districts, nonprofits and other organizations that get a piece of the state pie are voicing support and concern over potential cutbacks. Connelly said he Chris Nybo stood behind the governor’s efforts to rein in spending, even when they came with sacrifice. “To this governor, it’s been 12 years of mismanagement, 12 years of ‘let’s borrow here’ – it’s a big shell game in Springfield,” he said. “This is a governor from the private sector who demands results and there’s going to be no more shenanigans.” Nybo said he was hopeful state Democrats and Republicans could come together for a final fiscal year 2016 budget by May 31, the deadline for a deal. He said the process was only at a starting point, but added with Rauner in office, Democratic leadership would have to consider a bipartisan solution. The cuts from last year’s budget likely won’t make this year’s any easier, Nybo said, adding it would take an effort across Illinois to make a stable state. Connelly said the governor hopes to push several bills on workers com-

pensation, spending guidelines and more to free up finances for strapped municipalities and organizations to offset the cuts.

Education funding, Senate Bill 1 Education has remained untouched in Rauner’s proposed budget, which includes a $25 million increase in the Early Childhood Block Grant. But suburban schools may still take a huge hit in state funding under Senate Bill 1. Numbers haven’t fully emerged on the bill – Nybo said he only got information for his district April 2 – but it is similar to 2014’s controversial Senate Bill 16. The previous bill, which died without a vote, would have reallocated funds from property-rich districts to poorer ones statewide, causing many suburban districts to lose millions. Senate Bill 1 has a similar formula, Nybo said, and schools in his district would still lose out on $40 million in the coming years. Connelly said he hopes for a more in-depth look at the school funding problem, particularly the disparity between Chicago schools and the rest of the state. “People want kids in Chicago, in Naperville, Edwardsville, Carbondale to receive a great public education, but they also want fairness and equity when it comes to the financing of it,” he said.

Future of the College of DuPage The senators also addressed another education issue that has taken the county and state by storm – the College of DuPage. The school has been beleaguered by spending and transparency scandals, leading Connelly and other legislators to demand change. Nybo said it was a governance issue stemming from a culture instilled by President Robert Breuder. “Dr. Breuder has created a culture where his own board … may have felt hindered in their ability to question what he was doing,” he said. “Any individual who is entrusted with such immense power and is running an organization as big as the College of DuPage needs to be approachable, needs to be transparent, needs to engage with the stakeholders.” Connelly has filed a bill asking for a state audit of the school’s state funds paid for by the college, but has yet to hear an answer from school officials. During the turmoil, Nybo said, it is important to remember the college is still an asset to the county.

Over 19,000 votes were cast to determine the winner in each category. “It is such an honor to be recognized by the community, my Caitlin Spencer peers from the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce and Baird & Warner,” said Spencer. “I love Wheaton and I love selling real estate. Francesca’s Amici makes name for itself

Suburban Life Media photos

Francesca’s Amici in downtown Elmhurst, a destination for rustic Italian favorites, has sister restaurants in the suburbs such as La Grange, Bolingbrook and Naperville. Tilapia paesana features plump, moist fish that’s delicately breaded and smothered with shredded leek, tomatoes, and cremini and shitake mushrooms with a touch of saffron, all in a subtle wine sauce. leek, tomatoes, and cremini and shiitake mushrooms with a touch of saffron, all in a terrific wine sauce. My dining companion couldn’t resist the fish either, and helped polish off the generous serving. With thoughts still lured by dessert, half the pizza became takeout for lunch the next day. And then the dessert list arrived. We were torn between such choices as flourless chocolate cake and gelato, but went with the server’s recommendation: mascarpone

cheesecake with passion-fruit glaze, perched on a polenta shortbread cookie. Pretty as a picture, it arrived on a plate drizzled with creme anglaise and topped with a raspberry nestled in a mint leaf. It paired well with a frothy cappuccino. It was a sweet finish to our night out. And the romantic setting, complete with a great musical soundtrack, remained conducive to conversation, no mean feat in a popular restaurant. As we took Italian candies

ELMHURST – In the mood to let seasoned pros do the cooking, we decided to make our first visit to Francesca’s Amici. It inhabits a warm, sophisticated space in downtown Elmhurst near the York Theatre. The spot is part of the regional collection of Francesca’s Italian restaurants, each with its own name. Among other suburban locations are La Grange, Bolingbrook and Naperville. Guiding us in from the dark, a glowing sign reading Amici (Italian for friends) crowns the inviting bar area off the entrance. The dining room is stylish with sleek booths and banquettes, and an artistic array of sepia photographs of people and places in Italy, capped with an undulating ceiling of curving beams set off by rolled copper mesh giving off a subtle sheen. Our server made us feel instantly welcome, and we soon had a small plate of freshly grated Parmesan to accompany a carafe of herbed olive oil for dipping our bread. An appetizer of scallops (capesante) in a bed of tomato risotto hit spicy notes to complement the creamy texture of the shellfish. Vowing to leave room for dessert, my dining companion selected a pizza with sausage, mushroom and his go-to spinach. He’d never been satisfied with the standard portion of spinach, until this pizza arrived, transformed from 2-D to 3-D by a tower of wonderfully prepared greens atop the pie. “I’m in awe,” he said at first sight. The fresh spinach tasted lightly sauteed with garlic, and he kindly shared a portion with me as an added side dish for my seafood plate. I ordered the tilapia paesana, expecting the thin fish I’ve encountered at the market. Instead, a plump, wonderfully moist fillet appeared, delicately breaded and smothered with a colorful melange of shredded

SOFTBALL PREVIEW

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The first pitch has been thrown for area high school softball teams, many of which had successful postseason runs last spring. Here’s how things are shaping up for local teams this year:

Jeff Pawlak Wheaton Warrenville South coach

ran track last year but is now the team’s leadoff hitter. Through five games, she was hitting .556 with 16 stolen bases. Calderon was batting .389 and Keating checked in at .353 as the Tigers started out 2-2-1. WWS beat Glenbard South 6-1 and Glenbard East 12-0. “My seniors are very focused,” Pawlak said, “and leadership wise, it’s been outstanding. It’s a great group of girls and they are very coachable.”

St. Francis Spartans 2014 record: 24-6 Top players NAME Emma Chapman Ali Dittrich Carley Pasquale Janie Smith Fiona Summers

YEAR sr. sr. sr. sr. jr.

POSITION P 1B OF SS C

WTL/WCP

Outlook: With only six seniors on the roster, Wheaton Warrenville South is a little younger this spring and will have a different look on the diamond. “We are more left-handed this year,” WWS coach Jeff Pawlak said. “That is a nice dimension we really haven’t had; we have three slappers in the our lineup and that causes problems by itself.” The Tigers bring back four full-time starters from a year ago, including junior Maya Keating and senior Cate Hohnstein at shortstop and third base, respectively, Ariana Caldarone in right field and Maddie Briggs within the pitching circle. Senior Jen Mindock also received some starts at first base in 2014. Junior Maddie Trost also was called up for the playoffs last spring and will handle some of the pitching duties as well along with playing second base. Molly Fay is a third pitcher that Pawlak will use. “Trost is a little different, she has a little more velocity,” Pawlak said. “The other two are more control and finesse pitchers. It’s a good combination to have. “And it’s really important for us, defensively we have to make plays. I’ve got high expectations for our infield.” A new face to pay attention to is junior center fielder Sydney Young, who

“It’s a great group of girls and they are very coachable.”

Outlook: St. Francis is coming off a very successful 2014 campaign and despite losing pitcher Maggie Remus to graduation, the Spartans are poised for another big spring. And that has certainly played out in the early going as the squad posted a 6-1 record in their trip to Myrtle Beach. While St. Francis brings back a trio of impact offensive players, Ali Dittrich, who hit .441 with 32 RBIs last spring, is recovering from shoulder surgery. Also returning is Carley Pasquale, who batted .470 with 40 runs and 17 RBIs as a junior, Fiona Summers, who checked in with a .423 average and 17 RBIs in 2014, and shortstop Janie Smith. In the pitching circle, senior Emma Chapman inherits the No. 1 spot from Remus. “We have quite a bit of experience Mark Busch - mbusch@shawmedia.com with this group,” St. Francis coach Ralph Remus said. “Our goal is to be a better Wheaton Warrenville South pitcher Maddie Trost fires a pitch Tuesday during the Tigers’ team in May than we are in April.” game at Downers Grove North High School.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The first pitch has been thrown for area high school softball teams, many of which had successful postseason runs last spring. Here’s how things are shaping up for local teams this year:

Wheaton North Falcons Coach: Danielle Soraghan 2014 record: 9-25 Top players NAME Rosie Craine Kelly Thornton Maggie Will

YEAR sr. sr. jr.

POSITION C SS OF

Outlook: A young team this spring, Wheaton North will go through some growing pains against a very challenging schedule. The Falcons do return an experienced player in senior three-sport standout Kelly Thornton, who batted .350 last spring. Junior outfielder Maggie Will also is back after hitting close to .300 as a sophomore, and senior catcher Rosie Craine returns to provide stability behind the plate. That trio makes up the heart of the batting order. Wheaton North started off the season against some stiff competition and dropped its first seven games. Jessica Mordacq hit a home run against St. Charles East on March 31 while Thornton went 3 for 4 with two runs scored against Conant on April 1 and Will added two hits and an RBI. The Falcons also played in a Tennessee tournament April 3 and 4. They

West Chicago Wildcats Coach: Kim Wallner 2014 record: 12-21 Top players NAME Ellie Braun Jenna Foreman Hannah Gehlhaar Kayla Goffinet Amy Goldsmith Tatiana Rich Jenny Wood

YEAR sr. sr. sr. sr. sr. sr. sr.

POSITION C/3B CF/P IF 2B/OF P/1B SS 1B/C

Outlook: West Chicago returns six starters and nine seniors this spring, and as a result, expectations are high for the Wildcats after a 12-win campaign in 2014. A lot of the optimism can be tied to the team’s strength within the pitching circle as both Jenna Foreman and Amy Goldsmith give West Chicago a strong one-two punch. Foreman also doubles as the Wildcats’ center fielder while Goldsmith plays first base. Also back is shortstop Tatiana Rich and catcher Ellie Braun, as well as Kayla Goffinet, Jenny Wood and Hannah Gehlhaar. “We expect to be competitive in every game and are looking to be top three in the conference,” West Chicago coach Kim Wallner said. “The offense

should be improved and we are looking to generate more runs this year. Both our pitchers are returning and have improved their pitches and location. And we should be strong defensively.” The team went 7-12 in their first season in the Upstate Eight conference, and this spring they move to River division. West Chicago has started out on a good note, posting a 3-1-1 record through five games. The Wildcats opened with a doubleheader sweep of Willowbrook. Goldsmith struck out 10 while yielding four hits in a complete-game 2-0 win before Foreman whiffed 12 in seven frames during a 3-2 win.

Wheaton co-op gymnastics team set to defend three straight state titles By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com WHEATON – The Wheaton co-op boys gymnastics program has an opportunity to join special company this spring. Coming off a dominating campaign in 2014, the team is going for a fourth consecutive state title, something only one other school [Hinsdale Central from 1970-73] has ever achieved. But that potential accomplishment is far from the minds of Wheaton’s gymnasts currently. Instead, the squad is just focusing on daily improvement. “This year is different, but I’m excited,” Wheaton coach Greg Gebhardt said. “It will be interesting to see what happens. It is six weeks to the state meet and we will need every single

second half of the season. Last year, we came out of the gate with a 160 and basically just had to stay healthy. They are doing a great job.” Wheaton’s best score thus far has been a 148.60, bested only by Stevenson’s 151.90. “We are right in the thick of it,” Gebhardt said. “We just have to stay away from injuries.”

Wheaton Academy finished with 14 wins in 2014 and notched a 9-7 record in its final season in the Suburban Christian Gold conference. This spring, the squad moves to the Metro Suburban conference, which features the likes of Glenbard South and Riverside-Brookfield. Despite the loss of Gagliano, the Warriors do return a nice crop of players that includes four starters from a year ago. Headlining the group is senior catcher Jessica Bosse, who batted .392 with 30 runs and 23 RBIs last spring. Fellow senior Bridget Koehler was a two-time all-SCC pick and post-

ed a .390 average with 19 runs in 2014 while senior Autumn Ratliff hit .351 with 18 RBIs as a junior. Angie Graff also is back after batting .299 with 19 runs last season. The squad also will receive a major boost from the return of Meghan Gagliano, Marissa’s younger sister, who missed all of last season with a torn ACL. She has already committed to Charleston Southern. The pitching is expected to be handled by sophomore Andi Pivaronas, who tossed 40.1 innings as a freshman, and freshman Courtney Kinnane.

The Falcons dropped a 13-3 decision to Glenbrook South on Saturday in five innings. Kevin Wong had a double and two RBIs and Jack Duggan also had a hit, run scored and RBI.
