Wheaton house unsafe for occupancy after closet fire
WHEATON – A Wheaton house is uninhabitable after a fire June 26, the city announced in a news release. Crews responded about 10:30 p.m. to 1522 E. Geneva Road for a structure fire that started in a second-floor closet, according to the release. The cause was determined to be accidental due to combustible materials stacked close to
a closet light fixture that was on. The fire was controlled within minutes, the release stated. All occupants escaped and no injuries were reported. Damage estimates were unavailable, but the house was deemed unsafe for occupancy. The Wheaton Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Wheaton Police Department and several fire departments from neighboring communities.

WHEATON – Wheaton residents have days of patriotic celebration ahead of them in the weekend’s annual Fourth of July events. The Wheaton Park District will kick off the Independence Day fun July 3 with fireworks and other activities at Graf Park, 1701 Manchester Road, according to the district website. The event begins at 4 p.m. and will include carnival rides, games, a DJ and food, with the fireworks starting about 9 p.m. Parking will be available at the DuPage County Fairgrounds. The next day, the city’s 100th annual parade will begin at 10 a.m. in downtown Wheaton. This year’s theme is “The All-American Picnic” and the parade will be led by marshals Ken Carlson of Carlson’s Glass and Mirror and Ryne Stolarz, Wheaton native and Team Illinois soccer player. Wheaton Mayor Mike Gresk said he looks forward to participating in one of the largest parades in the area. “It’s your classic piece of Americana,” he said. The events will shut down roadways and cause delays, according to a city news release.

The commission posted banners in several locations around downtown Wheaton, inviting community members to draw or write messages to one of Wheaton’s two sister cities, the village of Wheaton Aston in England. Commission Chairwoman Teri Ash said Wheaton Aston chose “All Things American” as the theme for its annual carnival to celebrate the 25-year connection between the two communities. A: Loudness is the intensity of sound,
measured as decibels (dB). Very quiet sounds are close to zero dB. Noises above 85dB are considered unsafe. The damage occurs in our inner ear where the organ of hearing, called the cochlea, is housed. It contains delicate nerve cells or “hair cells”. They are commonly called hair cells because when viewed under a microscope, they resemble little hairs. These delicate hair cells vibrate to create nerve signals and send the signals to the brain. Loud sounds can damage these delicate hair cells, which will result in a sensorineural (permanent) hearing loss. A firecracker going off at 125dB within your general vicinity can damage these hair cells. The same can be said for loud firetrucks in the parade, construction tools and equipment, lawn equipment, and even excessively loud music through earbuds. The gift of hearing is precious as it is the essential avenue for connection between people. It pays to take care of your hearing and protect it.

Wheaton Mayor Mike Gresk said he has visited Wheaton Aston twice as mayor, including in March, and that he exchanges Christmas cards with the village’s officials. “It’s been a wonderful relationship,” he said. “I met many wonderful and gracious people. ... We have a long relationship with England and an even longer one with Sweden. It goes to prove that old cliche of the world getting smaller.” Ash hopes the effort will be the start of a renewed public interest in the sister city program, as the commission only has three formal members. She said the concept of sister cities remains important, and would like to bring more volunteers, schools and organizations into the effort. “We hope this leads to a renewed back and forth,” she said. “Enliven it all again to have a relationship with people on the other side.”

Date night isn’t just for Saturdays anymore! Starting July 6, Monday will be the new favorite day of the week. Every Monday in July, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., the public is invited to enjoy free music at the Wheaton Park District’s Music Mondays outdoor concert series. Music Mondays provide COMMUNITY the perfect family outing, VOICE date night, or hangout time Julia with friends. Set up a blanReed ket and enjoy snacks at the concessions or bring a picnic to share at Memorial Park. Each week will feature a different music genre, offering something for everyone. This year’s concert series will kick off July 6 with the soulful jazz styling of Roy McGrath and the Latin Jazz Quintet. With a master’s degree in Music from Northwestern University, McGrath has traveled the globe perfecting the art of jazz. According to James Nadel from All About Jazz, the tenor saxophonist, composer and bandleader has, “not only adapted the techniques and rudiments associated with jazz but has also gone on to live the life of an artist seeking knowledge and finesse.” On July 13, take a guided tour through rock ’n’ roll history with The Neverly Brothers. Playing favorite rock ’n’ roll classics from Elvis to the Beatles, the Neverly Brothers guarantee a night of singing, dancing and lively entertainment. The fun continues with The Niche on July 20, performing British and American hits from the ’60s. The Niche keeps the audience on their toes by mixing up the set list with the occasional ’70s and ’80s favorite and throwing in a few “B” sides to “keep the audience guessing.” The concert series will sign off July 27 with the talented blues musician “Brother John” Kattke. The mighty struggle underway over the Illinois state budget is eerily similar to the game of chess. The comparison is both apt and sad. The opponents are the entrenched Democrats, led by House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton, versus first-year Gov. Bruce Rauner and the minority Republicans. They represent the kings, queens, knights, bishops and rooks on the chess board. And the 12.8 million other Illinoisans? Well, if you’ve ever felt like a pawn in the great budgetary battle, join the club. In chess, pawns are manipulated to advance the interests of the major pieces. Pawns don’t matter much in the grand scheme of things. They are routinely imperiled and sacrificed to benefit the more powerful chess pieces. Likewise, in the budget battle, average citizens are manipulated to advance the interests of the politicians. If the public is imperiled by budgetary proposals and brinkmanship, it’s no real concern to the leadership class. The object of chess is to use one’s intelligence and experience to defeat the opponent. The same goes for politics, which unfortunately carries over into governance, and which is the crux of the budget battle: Will the state continue to live beyond its means, or not? The budget approved by the Democrats would spend $3 billion to $4 billion more than it takes in. Democratic leaders did that on purpose to pressure Rauner to approve tax

increases to cover the difference. For his part, Rauner doesn’t like the chronic overspending, vetoed most of the budget June 25, and awaits the arrival of Democrats at the bargaining table to negotiate for what he wants: some “pro-business” legislation and structural reforms to government that would weaken Democrats’ stranglehold on power. He previously announced more than $800 million in temporary cuts that are set to kick in with the new fiscal year that starts this week. What are the pawns’ roles in all of this? Average Illinoisans have spoken up about how proposed budget cuts would negatively affect them. Some have done so on their own; others have been trotted out by politicians. Either way, their stories are compelling. Senior citizens, the poor, those with physical and mental disabilities and others who rely on state funding are imperiled. The uncertainty is difficult to bear. In chess, pawns do have one golden opportunity to triumph. If a pawn can advance to the end of the board, it wins a powerful promotion and gains great influence. The opposing player tries to stop that from happening at all costs. In Illinois’ budgetary endgame, Illinoisans must put politicians in check and exert their combined influence to demand that fiscal prudence and the best interests of the people be part of the new budget. For politicians who just don’t get it, the public can deal with them at next election. Checkmate.

Philip R. Sheldon, age 67, resident of Wheaton, IL passed away too soon on June 4, 2015, after a battle with lung cancer. Phil was born on September 10, 1947, in Rochester, NY. Phil graduated from Downers Grove North High School in 1965. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War as a helicopter mechanic and door gunner. Our fearless “Ski King” enjoyed drag racing, car shows, coffee with his buddies, drawing, engineering, dancing, boating, cycling, canoeing, animals, and the outdoors. He spent his life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, carpenter and completed his professional career working for the DuPage County Circuit Clerk's Office until his retirement in 2013. Anyone who met Phil knew what a unique man he was with a contagious personality. His actions genuinely

A review of the College of DuPage’s accreditation has been delayed after the Higher Learning Commission postponed a trip to the school scheduled for June 29 and 30. The postponement was announced June 28 and was attributed to Jackson College President Daniel Phelan’s cancellation of his involvement with the College of DuPage accreditation review, according to a school news release. The college’s acting interim president, Joseph Collins, said in the release the visit is expected to be rescheduled about a month from the original review dates. “While we are disappointed that there will be a delay, we understand the HLC’s desire to ensure that the team members are suited to give us an honest evaluation,” he said. The Board of Trustees was scheduled to meet June 29 to have a discussion related to the commission’s review process, but that meeting was canceled. In a blog post June 27, Ed-

Higher Learning Commission Public Information Officer John Hausaman did not immediately return multiple calls seeking comment on the review’s postponement. The college received a letter May 5 from the commission on its accreditation being placed under review. The commission cited investigations related to institutional finance and ethics violations as being among the reasons for the review. The commission is expected to evaluate the school’s educational responsibilities, ethical practices, degree programs and more.
Thomas Allen Eckhardt, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2015, at Edward Hospital in Naperville, Illinois. He was born June 12, 1944, to the late Frederick and Doris Eckhardt of Wheaton, Illinois. Tom was the beloved husband of Sandy (Coats) Eckhardt whom he married March 25, 1972. He is also survived by his only brother, Fritz Eckhardt and his wife, Helen of Little River, South Carolina; his nephew, Christopher and his wife, Andrea of Wake Forest, North Carolina; and his niece, Melissa Eckhardt Murphy and her husband, Tom of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Tom attended Wheaton schools, and was a graduate of the University of Wyoming where he earned the Juris Doctor degree. He was self-employed while practicing law in Glen Ellyn for over forty years. Tom was active in the Naperville Heritage Society serving as its vice president and chairman of the Heritage Antiques Show. Among Tom's interests were fishing, photography, and showing/breeding his Scottish Terriers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Scottish Terrier Club of America Health Fund (Ms. Lisa Kinchloe, STCA-HTF, 19250 Reavis Way, Prunedale, CA 03907). Red Stars Earn Convincing 3-0 Win Away over Sky Blue FC
Several players with standout performances as Chicago remains atop NWSL table Piscataway, N.J. – The Chicago Red Stars defended their spot at the top of the NWSL table with a commanding 3-0 away win over Sky Blue FC on Sunday night. Vanessa DiBernardo, Jen Hoy and Alyssa Mautz all scored for Chicago, with Hoy adding an assist on Mautz’ second-half tally. The match also featured a pair of assists by 22-year-old Huerta and outstanding play by defender Abby Erceg, who made her return to the Red Stars lineup after captaining New Zealand in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Chicago goalkeeper Michele Dalton earned her third clean sheet of the season behind an all-around solid performance. The Red Stars seized the lead in just the sixth minute of play. Huerta sprinted into the box on the left and battled to maintain possession before smartly centering to DiBernardo, who coolly sidestepped goalkeeper Brittany Cameron for the opening strike. Sky Blue FC had an opportunity to level the score a mere four minutes later, but Shawna Gordon’s left-footed shot from the top of the area went just over the frame. After three brilliant defensive plays in a row by Chicago’s Erceg, the 25-year-old center back was in the right spot again to block a 21st-minute cross from the right by Sky Blue FC’s Meg Morris. However, the interception fell right to Katie Freels, who nearly put away the opportunity with a left-footed attempt that rattled the crossbar. The home side had another chance to tie the match at the half-hour mark, as Taylor Lytle was in on goal off a beautiful through ball from deep inside her own half, only to have Red Stars outside back Arin Gilliland catch up and force her wide. While the rookie’s hustle allowed Erceg and Samantha Johnson to recover, Lytle still managed to get a shot off, firing across goal and just wide of the far post from the left side of the area. In the 34th minute, Chicago made their opponents pay dearly for the missed opportunities with a beautiful combination play doubling the lead for Head Coach Rory Dames’ side. Rachel Quon took full advantage of a breakaway by releasing Huerta down the center, and the rookie sensation unselfishly slid the ball through to Hoy for a simple tap-in from the mouth of the goal.

Sky Blue FC started off the second half on the right foot, as Freels put Danish international Nadia Nadim through on goal, but Red Stars keeper Michele Dalton left her feet for an exceptional block on the powerful driven effort. That set the stage for Chicago to increase their lead just after the hour mark. Danielle Colaprico’s long ball into the attack found Hoy entering the box with time on her hands, picking out Mautz for a right-footed shot that took a slight deflection and trickled inside the left upright. In the 66th minute of the competition, Huerta nearly added a fourth for her squad when she exploited some indecisive defending by toe-poking the ball away from Maya Hayes and took unleashed a shot on frame to force a diving stop by Cameron. Idaho native Huerta continued to wreak havoc in the closing stages of the match, dribbling past two defenders on the left side of the box and firing from close range, only for Cameron to produce a point-blank reaction save. The rebound fell into the path of Rachel Quon, whose low attempt on goal forced another diving save from the Sky Blue FC goalkeeper. Lytle had a chance to pull one back for the hosts, her strong shot from the top of the penalty area whistling just over the bar. Shorty after that, her teammate Nadia Nadim nearly scored what would have been a certain candidate for Goal of the Year. On a stoppage-time corner kick from the right, the striker tracked back to meet the ball near the edge of the box and smashed it off the crossbar by way of a spectacular bicycle kick. It would be the final opportunity of the night, as Chicago held on for its fifth victory of 2015. The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars look to make it consecutive wins when they travel to take on Houston Dash on July 12. Baba Karam’s specialty is tasty kabobs

VILLA PARK – A knock on some eateries is that they offer so many menu items, the cooking staff can never really master any of them. It’s precisely the opposite at Baba Karam. With a focus on Middle Eastern fare, the restaurant in Villa Park keeps the menu simple, and, in the process, has clearly perfected its craft. I stopped by Baba Karam on a recent evening with a dining companion. Hungry for some protein, I was hankering for something with beef or chicken. But first, to whet our appetite, we started with a hummus appetizer. The smooth, tasty dip, based on chickpeas and tahini sauce, was filled with flavor, and made the accompanying pita bread disappear quickly. Our server asked if we needed more pita, but it turned out that the portions matched up perfectly. For our entrees, we both zeroed in on the main section of the menu: the kabobs. Chicken, ground beef, lamb shank and a few different preparations of filet mignon were offered. I went for the one labeled “barg,” described as thinly sliced filet mignon marinated in saffron and spice. My companion opted for the boneless chicken, similarly marinated in saffron. We both ordered the dill rice; the other sides available were white rice and shirazi salad. The latter features cucumber, tomato and onion in a dressing of olive oil, black pepper, lime juice and mint. I definitely had my hankering for some meat fulfilled, and then some. The filet mignon was as delicious and tender as I expected, and I probably wolfed it down quicker than is strictly acceptable for a nice restaurant. Fortunately for me, my dining companion loved her chicken kabob but couldn’t finish the serving, so I got to sample a sizable portion of that entree, too. As terrific as the barg kabob was, I think the chicken

Here are some of the highlights for the Tigers, presented in no particular order:
Wheaton co-op boys gymnastics team takes second in state
While the Wheaton co-op boys gymnastics team fell short of its goal of a fourth straight state championship, the squad still was able to bring home the runner-up trophy. Wheaton posted a team score of 149.40, finishing behind only Stevenson [151.65]. Individually, Ben Szot placed second in the all-around competition with a total of 52.55. He was third on the rings and parallel bars and fourth on the pommel horse and horizontal bar. Lucas Cooperman finished second on the parallel bars and fourth on the floor and horizontal bar. Quotable: “Stevenson deserved it. They earned it. They worked hard and beat us, but we did a great job, too, and we should be proud of that,” Cooperman said.

Finishing as the runner-up at the Glenbard North Class 3A sectional, WWS qualified five individuals and a pair of relays for the girls state track meet. Once there, the Tigers had three athletes bring home state medals: Heidi Nassos placed fourth in the pole vault, Alexandra Enright came in sixth in the high jump, and Naomi Yamane finished ninth in the shot put. Quotable: “It’s amazing. It was great for me to experience the state meet at least once in my life. That was my goal since freshman year. Being with the best of Illinois is definitely a confidence booster, too, because some of these girls throw 40 feet and I would never have thought I would be competing with them on the same day,” Yamane said.

Falcons have soccer season to remember
Highlighted by a 2-0 victory against Naperville North on May 7, Wheaton North captured the DuPage Valley Conference title this spring with a 4-0-1 mark in league play. The Falcons went on to capture a Class 3A regional championship with a 4-0 decision against Wheaton Warrenville South and finished the season with a 16-3-3 record. Quotable: “In retrospect, when we got third in the state, we were 19-0-1 in the regular season. That was an extraordinary team. This regular season, we only lost one game in regulation and the competition we faced was extremely high. It’s probably the best regular season we’ve ever had as a program when you factor in the competition we faced,” coach Tim McEvilly said.

After starting the season with a 6-7 record, the baseball team was nearly unbeatable from April 20 on. The Spartans finished the regular season by winning 15 of their final 17 contests and then rattled off five straight postseason victories, by a combined
56-2 margin, before falling to Nazareth in the state semis. The squad then bounced back to defeat Morgan Park in the third-place game and brought home the program’s second state trophy in the past three years.

Lemont native relishes experience with Stanley Cup By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com
LEMONT – The past year has been a whirlwind for Scott Darling after the Lemont native signed with the Chicago Blackhawks on July 1, 2014. Having made a variety of stops on the minor league circuit, the 26-year old got his first call-up to the NHL on Oct. 26 and was the winning goalie in a 2-1 victory against the Ottawa Senators. Darling went on to play in 14 regular season games before seeing action in five postseason contests in the opening round against Nashville, where he notched three wins. His performance helped the Blackhawks advance to the second round and ultimately capture their third Stanley Cup in the past six seasons. In the process, the 6-foot-6 goalie became the first Chicago-area born player to have his name etched on the Cup as a member of the Blackhawks. On June 29, Darling brought the cup to his former hometown and put it on display at the Lemont Park District. Staff writer Scott Schmid was part of a press conference at which Darling spoke about the experience in Lemont and what it has been like to be a part of a Stanley Cup champion. What has the last couple of weeks been like and has it sunk in that you are a Stanley Cup Champion? Darling: It’s been crazy since we’ve won. We’ve done a lot of great stuff, like going to Wrigley Field and going to see Mumford & Sons. And now this is my day to share the Cup with my hometown and with my family and friends. Once it all winds down a little bit, I can relax and just reflect, maybe turn my phone off for a few days and enjoy it for a little bit. What’s the last year been like? Darling: The whole year, from start to finish, like I’ve said before, it was such an honor to sign with the team and I was thrilled to be on the [Rockford] Ice Hogs.
