Thesis work A bath house Location: Lake Michigan Instead of being representative of designed spaces, these drawings are meant to take certain feelings and be represented through spaces. These drawings served as a design process, as more drawings were produced, the more the building was revealed to me. They are unusual as architectural drawings, without convention or scale, and this is intentional. This allows them to be interpreted in different ways as the thesis continues to develop. Drawing as a tool helps me to be ‘slow’, unlike computer software, which is forgiving and able to produce renderings rapidly. Drawing demands time to carefully consider where to land each line, where to add more shade, and so forth. There is enough time to think about propositions of the thesis while planning and making each drawing, a process that became more important than the actual drawing of the time. Perhaps the space in a particular drawing won’t appear in the final building, but the only way to find out is to draw it out. These drawings attempt to convey the feeling of the ‘sublime’ in a way that conventional ‘references’ are taken away. Usual reference: sense of scale, nature light, building materials, smell, temperature and texture, are absent, situating the viewer into a space that dematerializes, forcing the viewer to realize the tininess of him/herself. The viewer becomes present in the drawn space in order to become part of the space. This feeling can be compared to a bolt in a functional engine – it becomes more than just the singular person.

The floor plan was a direct translation of an olive branch. When I think about time, I thing about how time shape things. The twisty nature of the olive branch resonates,with me, with how a curvy path a person can take through the person’s life time.

Star Library Seattle/ Original site of the movie ‘UP!‘ The Star library is suspended to separate itself from the shopping mall for acoustic reasons and also in honor of Edith’s house. The suspension also provides an open space underneath the structure for small-scale gatherings such as coffee breaks. In Seattle, a big and busy city, the Star Library was designed to be a place where people could spend cozy sunny afternoons, where they could reach their fingers in between pages to feel the warmth of sunshine that has been captured by each book of the libraries’ collection, where they could smell the print on each page and to touch the bumps punched by letter presses on book covers. The main structure is a frame of I beams. The wood floor joist was filled in later. Frosted glass was introduced as rain screen as well as light diffuser for the entire library.

Bird Observatory The tower is 150+ feet tall for several reasons. Firstly the lightning rod has to be at a higher altitude than the trees in order to attract lightning. This protects the surrounding trees and animals. Secondly, birds nest at various heights and most raptors fly very high, the observation platforms were distributed ranging from 5 feet above the ground to 100 feet in the air to compensate different habits of birds. Steel piles were driven into the soil as foundations instead of traditional excavation for environment protection reasons. The observatory also features an anemoscope to collect wind data for academic studies, along with a water collector to attract birds in drier seasons.

Less and less people will actually go to a public library to read and seek knowledge as the Internet evolves. This public library was designed for people who actually want to spend time in a library to read. In order to do so, there was no visual connection to the exterior for a more concentrated reading environment, all nature light comes into the library is diffused for more suitable light quality for reading.

Earth tubings were introduced as a big part of HAVC system, cool air will be feed in from the first floor and hot lighter air will be pushed out of the library from the top of the atrium.

The central core of the library is surrounded by parking facilities underground. This configuration enables people who drive to the library to not have to expose themselves in rain or other harsh environment before entering the library. This allows for a better user experience and better for protection of the books.

Duck Pond Gallery, Blacksburg, VA The Duck Pond Gallery situates underneath the island of Duck Pond and surrounded by water. This allows a better isolation to the exterior word so that one may enjoy the art in a more devoted manner. It is very dark in the gallery because natural light only comes in from above.

Motessori School For this project I used sketch models as a design charrette with no drawings done beforehand. Light quality is one of the concerns for this case. Both versions included indirect light passage. Blurring the boundary of nature and class rooms is another concern since Montessori school structures curriculum base on tangible matters therefore the possibilities of touching things become vital tool of learning.

Architecture Folly This project was my first hands on experience of construction. The entire structure was made with 2x4s and fabric, situates on a farm in Blacksburg, VA. A color changing LED bulb was a center piece in this project to create mood and a view for the nights. In this case we had to take material thickness in consideration. Peer collaboration was a great experience.

Lobby 2.0 This was the second personal exhibition I did. The drawings and models that shown in this exhibit was an experiment I did on myself. Some times when images occur in my brain I immediately put them on papers, after drawing them I simply leave the drawings along for weeks in order to forget what I was thinking when I draw them. then,the next step was to take the spacial quality in those drawings and make them into 3D models.

Pure design practice The first project of my architecture study First, we were asked to arcurately measure and draw each part, then we were asked to put all of them together to make a graphic.

Industrial design hand sketches These are some sketches that I fill my leisure time with. I found that I feel out of practice once I stop sketching for more than a few days. To prevent that from happening I just keep on sketching whenever I sit down with a ball pen in my hand. I give myself some prompts or a story that needs characters, then I will sketch out the design for those prompts.

Coat racks Personally I don’t like to lay my jackets on the back of my chair because it will wrinkle them. When there is no place to hang them I will just make coat racks by myself. These are two coat racks that I designed and mad. I call them parasite hangers because they were designed not to damage any existing facilities. One of them has two dowels that fit in existing holes of my desk legs. The other one was simply hugging the concrete column. All of them were resistance fit. Both of them take me less than ab hour to design and produce. The craftsmanship has a lot of room to develop.
