Here’s the Plan ... In 2014, the Shawnee County Board of County Commissioners approved the Shawnee County Parks + Recreation Master Plan, a document designed to guide and grow the department to better meet the needs of Shawnee County residents over the next 10 years. A copy of this plan is available at parks.snco.us.

Shawnee County Programs Receive National Honors There’s a lot to be proud of right here in Shawnee County. Neighbors still help their neighbors and people still care about their community. These qualities are at the heart of many of our parks + recreation programs. We don’t do it for the recognition, it’s just what we do. However, we were pretty excited to learn that two of our programs were recognized as the best in the country at the National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials Conference. This year, Silverbackks was recognized as the Outstanding Support Organization and the Easter Seals Capper Foundation iCan Bike summer camp program was awarded top recognition for the Removing Barriers Initiative.

FOOTGOLF The traditional game of golf and FootGolf are close relatives. The object of FootGolf is to kick a soccer ball into a 21-inch hole with the fewest number of kicks. Shawnee County Parks + Recreation’s 18-hole FootGolf course at Forbes Field is accredited by the American FootGolf League and has par 3’s, 4’s, 5’s. It also includes the features of a traditional golf course such as rolling fairways and roughs, sand traps, trees, tall native grasses and other “hazards” to test your skills. No expensive clubs or lessons are required - just your feet, a soccer ball and about 90 minutes. Regulated by the Federation for International FootGolf, or FIFG, FootGolf is played throughout the world and is a great way to get outside, get fit and hang out with your family and friends. Go to parks.snco.us or call 785-862-0114 for FootGolf tee times and rates. FootGolf Rules: -No cleats. Running shoes, turf shoes and golf cleats are permitted. -No groups larger the 5 on a hole at once. -Allow faster groups to play through. –Go to the American FootGolf League’s website at www.afgl.us for more rules.
