SHAWNEE COUNTY PARKS + RECREATION VISION: “Shawnee County Parks + Recreation in partnership with the citizens of Topeka and Shawnee County will develop and manage accessible, walkable parks, recreation facilities and programs through a collaborative leadership process that provides a long-term perspective for how parks and recreation will impact the livability and economic value of living in the city and county.” SHAWNEE COUNTY PARKS + RECREATION MISSION: “Shawnee County Parks + Recreation is an essential service established to improve quality of life for all residents of the county by proactively responding to changing demographics, emerging trends while maximizing all available resources in providing quality parks, recreation facilities and programs that enhance the residents’ health, promote economic vitality and long term sustainability now and for future generations.” REFUND POLICY AND PROCEDURE It is the intention of Shawnee County Parks + Recreation (SCP+R) to offer a refund and/ or account credit for participants who qualify and meet the requirements. Participants who paid by cash, check or credit card will be issued a refund by check. All check refunds follow the County Treasurer’s bill paying schedule. There are no cash refunds. CANCELLATION Programs may be combined or cancelled due to insufficient emollment. A full refund or account credit will be issued for programs, sports leagues or shelter reservations cancelled by the SCP+R Department. Credit card refunds can only be processed if program was cancelled by SCP+R. SPORTS LEAGUES AND CLINICS, PROGRAMS, ROOM RENTALS Refunds will be issued with a 20% cancellation fee if cancelled by participant at least 21 days prior to the program start date. Cancellations less than 21 days prior to the start date will receive a 50 percent account credit. Account credit shall be utilized within twelve 12 months.

Refunds will be issued with a 20 percent cancellation fee for rentals cancelled by the participant at least 60 days prior to the reservation. Cancellations less than 60 days prior to the reservation date will receive a 50 percent account credit. No account credit will be issued if cancellation is less than seven days of reservation. Any shelter transfer shall follow the refund policy. Transfers to a lower price shelter shall not yield a refund. Account credit shall be utilized within 12 months. SCHOLARSHIPS “Our vision for programming is to reach out to people of all ages to encourage them to experience parks and recreation facilities through well-designed programs that create a lifetime of memories.” Shawnee County Parks + Recreation provides a wide variety of recreation opportunities for youth, yet not all families are able to afford the fees for participation in our programs. A youth scholarship program has been designed to assist those who meet the financial guidelines as set forth. Scholarship approval is good from Feb. 1, 2020 to Jan. 31, 2021. Forms are posted at parks. snco.us or call 785-251-8600. CAMPGROUND All campground fees are nonrefundable including unused reservations. REFUND REQUEST A Refund Request Form must be completed by participant. Forms are available at parks.snco.us, SCP+ R community centers, administrative offices or by calling 251-6800 and the refund request form can be mailed or emailed to participant. TULIP TIME INCLUDES THREE POPULAR SPECIAL EVENTS: TULIPS AT TWILIGHT UNCORKED

Old Prairie Town/Ward-Meade Botanical Garden invites you to Tulips at Twilight Uncorked. Experience wine tasting from a variety of local wineries and receive a commemorative wine glass. TULIPS AT TWILIGHT

In its initial year, Tulips at Twilight quickly became a favorite event in Shawnee County. The event is a visual feast featuring 35 lighted displays including larger-than-life illuminated flowers and tens of thousands of multi-colored tulips along lighted pathways.

In honor its founder, Tulip Time 2020 will be named Jerold Binkley Tulip Time. The event began in Jerold Binkley’s home gardens when he was a member of the Topeka Beautification Association. For 22 years, he shared his personal gardens with visitors to Topeka. His desire to create a community-wide event gave birth to Tulip Time as it is celebrated today. Mr. Binkley passed away during Tulip Time 2019.

Enjoy live music and historic Old Prairie town tours on Friday and Saturday evenings. The garden is open Sunday through Thursday for a more tranquil experience. The event is hosted by Friends of Ward-Meade and the Parks For All Foundation. Age: 1+ Date: April 10-26 Time: 7-10 p.m. Fee: $5 Children 5 and under free.

TULIP FESTIVAL AT THE LAKE TED ENSLEY GARDENS/LAKE SHAWNEE

The popular Tulip Festival at the Lake returns to Ted Ensley Gardens. Grab some pancakes for breakfast or lunch from your favorite food truck, enjoy musical performances, visit the craft vendors and stroll the gardens to view 60,000 tulips in bloom on a beautiful spring day. A car show and Easter Egg hunt are also part of the fun. Sponsored by Friends of Ted Ensley Gardens and the Parks For All Foundation. Building Momentum for parks and recreation W

hen it comes to quality of life and quality of place, a strong parks and recreation system is essential. Parks and recreation facilities help attract and keep residents and businesses in communities, increase real estate values and even help reduce juvenile crime. In Shawnee County we have some impressive parks and facilities including Lake Shawnee, Gage Park, Bettis Family Sports Complex and our aquatic centers. Our largest parks draw millions of people into our community and those visitors spend money. Our baseball and softball tournaments alone generate estimated economic activity of $5.25 million. We also have an impressive number of parks – 109 in total. That’s a lot to maintain but we do have a plan and we’re making progress. Our Master Plan calls for updating five to eight parks each year. We have identified parks, held public engagement meetings with nearby residents and are pouring concrete pads for playground equipment, picnic shelters, basketball courts and walking trails. We also received a $256,000 Healthy Play Initiatives Grant from GameTime which will help bring new playground equipment to 11 parks next summer. THE GUIDE 2020 WINTER/SPRING

Over the past year, we have invested $2.6 million on park projects that include multiple updates of Hillcrest Community Park. We upgraded and installed new amenities at the swimming pool, installed the community’s first outdoor fitness equipment, first Futsal courts, new playground equipment and new security lighting. We plan to invest in our community parks one at a time to upgrade them for their many patrons. Our trail system now includes 60 miles of natural surface and paved trails. Part of our Master Plan includes connecting as many trails as possible. We are presently three miles of trail and a street project (on SE 29th Street) from connecting our major trails across our community with the Shunga Trail connecting to the Deer Creek Trail which will run to SE 29th and down to the Lake Shawnee Trail. This is a huge advancement for our community. As we move forward, we will continue updating parks each year and taking public input as we do so. It will take time for us to get to every park, but we are developing momentum and we’re noticing the community getting excited about our progress. To have a strong parks system, we must maintain all of the parks and facilities that we have, but we must look to the future to meet the needs of everyone in Shawnee County. This does mean adding new park amenities and facilities in growing areas, or to meet the demand for popular or trending activities such as pickleball or disc golf. You will see these new amenities going in where needed but rest assured, we are committed to maintaining our entire Parks and Recreation system.

Recreational sports clinics provide a great way to introduce kids to a variety of activities that encourage an active healthy lifestyle. Hockey

Preschoolers will be introduced to the sport of floor hockey. No skating ability is required for this exciting chance to try a new sport. Topeka Community Cycle Project

Get help with your bike from volunteers of the TCCP. Staff will aid you in fixing flats, adjusting brakes, and answering questions about bikes. Children learn healthy separation from parents, independence, increase their social skills and learn to follow directions, by interacting with other children within the structure of the class.

Preschool:

Time: Tue. 6:15 p.m., Thurs. 4:30 p.m. In this class, children maneuver through obstacle courses and learn basic gymnastics skills on floor, balance beam, bars, and trampoline. Children continue to learn independence, increase their social skills and learn to follow directions, by interacting with other children within the structure of the class. Body/spatial awareness, strength, coordination and courage are all developed as they learn to try new things!

Beginner Gymnastics:

$52/month, 45 min. Age: 6-12 yrs. Time: Mon. 5:30 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. Age: 6-8 yrs. Time: Wed. 6:15 p.m. Age: 9-12 yrs. Thur. 5:15 p.m. Age: 8-11 yrs. This class is for those who have never taken gymnastics classes. Instructors use demonstration, spotting, and verbal explanation to teach new skills on each event. They may also use drills and repetition to emphasize important aspects of new skills. Class is often set up in “circuit training” or “obstacles” to keep your child engaged throughout events. This class will also get to utilize the trampoline for learning body control.

Intermediate Gymnastics:

$59/month, 60 min Age: 7-12 yrs. Time: Thur. 6 p.m. This class is for those who have had some previous training or have advanced past Beginner Gymnastics. Instructors emphasize performing skills with good form and consistency. New skills include back-walkovers and back-handsprings, front handsprings, cartwheels, cross and side handstands on the beam & mill circles, front hip circles and glide swings/kip concepts on bars. Strength and flexibility have a greater focus and importance at this level as most of these skills begin to emerge quickly when the gymnast has increased her strength.

Advanced Gymnastics:

$67/month, 75 min. Age: 7+ Time: Thur. 7 p.m. Prerequisite: standing back-handspring, back walk-over. Advanced Gymnastics is the highest level in the Recreational Program. This class will focus on runtumbling and connecting multiple skills together on floor as well as learning rotations/flips. Skills are progressed on the other apparatus as well based on ability.

Beginner Dance Tumbling:

$52/month, 45 min Age: 6+ Time: Wed. 5 p.m. This class is specifically designed for the dancer who has little to no experience with tumbling but is wanting to learn basic acro skills. The focus of this class is to develop body control and special awareness while also learning basic tumbling skills such as handstands, cartwheels, back walk-overs, etc.

Intermediate Dance Tumbling:

$52/month, 45 min. Age: 6+ Time: Wed. 5:45 p.m. This class is for the dancer who already has basic tumbling down but is wanting to polish and progress their acro skills. The focus is to continue developing strength and body control while advancing acro skills. Skills taught will include but are not limited to advanced walk-overs, valdez, round offs, backhand springs, aerials, and much more!

Tot/Preschool Open Gym:

ADAPTIVE RECREATION

TRAILS

Shawnee County Parks + Recreation’s nearly 60 miles of trails offer a leisurely stroll with side ventures into beautiful gardens, or a hike, run or mountain bike ride up hilly terrain leading to panoramic views of the county. There are 30 miles of paved trails and nearly 28 miles of natural surface trails running through forested, prairie and open natural areas. Shawnee County Parks + Recreation is continually increasing the number and length of trails in our community while connecting as many trails as possible. Shunga Trail – 8.5-mile paved concrete pedestrian/bicycle trail beginning at 29th and McClure and continuing east to SE 2nd. The trail will eventually stretch across Topeka. Lake Shawnee Trail – 7-mile paved concrete pedestrian/bicycle trail encircling the lake.

Gage Park Fitness Loop Trail – 2-mile paved trail encircling Gage Park. Deer Creek Trail – 2-mile trail from SE Golden to SE 6th and SE 6th to SE 10th.

Dornwood Nature Trail – 9.9 miles of natural surface, woodland hiking trail accessible from SE 25th and Highland.

Grant-Bradbury – Located west of Forbes Field, 2 miles of natural surface trails run through 80-acres of virgin prairie that has never been plowed. The area includes hundreds of native prairie species, some of which are scarcely found elsewhere in the state.

Landon Trail – 4.75-mile paved and gravel trail along an abandoned railroad track running from SE 15th to SE 45th.

Soldier Creek Trail – 1.8-mile paved concrete bicycle/pedestrian trail from NE Garfield Park to NW Lyman Road.

Azura Trails at Skyline Park – Four single-track loop trails comprising 4.47 miles of natural surface trails through wooded and prairie areas offering the most panoramic views of Shawnee County from the famed Burnett’s Mound.

Orville Rice Nature Trail – 1-mile mowed grass single track trail following Shunga Creek from SW Gage to the Shunga Trail near McDonald Field.

Warren Nature Area – 4 miles of natural surface trails beginning at SW 25th and Gage east of Felker Park. The trail includes a wetland to slow and clean runoff water from streets and neighborhoods. Many birds, mammals and aquatic species can be found here. Welton Grove Park – 3 miles of natural surface trails. Shawnee North Nature Trail – 2-mile natural surface trail on undeveloped parkland comprised of grasslands and wooded areas. The first quarter-mile is asphalt paved for accessibility. Shawnee North Community Park also has a .8 mile paved fitness loop trail encircling the west side of the park.

Oakland-Billard/Santa Fe Park Trails – 1.6 miles of paved trail. Freedom Valley – .75-mile concrete path. Clarion Woods Trail – 1.54 miles of single-track trail through a red cedar forest. Betty Phillips Park – .44-mile paved trail. Brookfield Park – .3-mile paved trail.

In effort to expand programs offered to the adaptive community Shawnee County Parks + Recreation will help day service providers set up a variety of exciting programs that promote an active and healthy lifestyle. Individuals can join planned group activities. Some of the programs available are racquetball, pickleball, volleyball, wallyball, and open gym. Rec+Roll Van

We’re taking fun to the parks, events, and even your work. Meet you there! Mobile recreation programs make it even easier to bring fun and play to where people are and not just kids. We deliver healthy activities all over town. The Rec+Roll van is outfitted with balls, hula hoops, games, art and fitness supplies music and a PA system with microphones. Look for the Rec+Roll van in your neighborhood. A calendar of scheduled appearances is available at parks.snco.us. SCP+R can also bring the van to your work for adult recess, staff team building for retreats, or fitness programs. This is a great way to add an exciting fitness component to your next work event. OLD PRAIRIE TOWN/WARD-MEADE BOTANICAL GARDEN

Featuring an 1854 replica Log Cabin with Blacksmith Shop, 1870’s Victorian prairie mansion on the National Register of Historic Places, and Ward-Meade Botanical Garden. The Ward-Meade Botanical Garden was established in 1963. There are approximately 500 varieties of trees and shrubs in the 2.5-acre garden in addition to the annual flowers planted each year. The garden includes many plants requiring shade as well as many unusual specimen plants. The area has three water gardens including Anna’s Asian Reading Garden, which consists of three pools, a stream, bridge, gazebo and waterfall. Weddings may be held in the garden. Call 785-251-6993. Mulvane General Store An old-fashioned mercantile that serves as our museum gift shop and visitors center. Kansas items, toys from yesteryear, souvenirs, and unique gifts are available. Package I - Anna’s Place and Reception $355 Anna’s Place consists of several water features and surrounded by many varieties of beautiful plants. A pond less water feature is located by the entrance to the gardens as well as 1,500 feet of stamped sidewalk that meanders through the gardens, ensuring accessibility for all. Many weddings are held in the gardens each year. A luscious, scenic spot for weddings, this three-hour rental package includes bride’s dressing facilities, use of the Preston Hale Room and a full kitchen. Lingo Livery Stable A rock barn was brought to the property and reassembled stone by stone with beautiful masonry work. Now, the charming loft area is a comfortable location for meetings, receptions or dinners. Capacity is 35. Potwin Drug Store The drug store/soda fountain includes original soda fixtures from a drugstore that stood for 75 years at 5th and Washburn in the historic Potwin area of Topeka. Today, ornate walnut cabinets with dozens of tiny drawers and glass fronts line both sides of the walls. A pharmacist’s counter in the back displays antique mortars and pestles and old-fashioned bottles and jars. A turn-of-the-century Wurlitzer jukebox, original to the drugstore, occupies one corner. The authenticity of the old time drugstore creates a unique and fun atmosphere.

MEALS FOR GROUPS AND ORGANIZATIONS

The following meal programs include two hours room rental. Ward Cabin Hearth Meals This unique meal is one of the more popular activities at Old Prairie Town, so make your reservations early! Meals are served at fireside tables in the Ward cabin, and diners are treated to special hearth-cooking demonstrations with a side dish of history, all provided by costumed volunteers. These family style meals are offered from Oct. 15 through March 15 with reservations for groups of 12-18. Menu 1 $20 per person Hearth-cooked ham or smoked turkey, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, fruit, Dutch oven baked biscuits, hearth-baked molasses cookies, old-fashioned ice cream and coffee. New additional meal choices are now available. Menu 2 $15 per person Beef Stew or Chicken and Noodles, hearth baked cornbread, fruit, molasses cookies, oldfashion ice cream, tea and water. Victorian Dinner $27 per person Enjoy this delightful Victorian meal served buffet-style in the elegant dining room of the 1870’s mansion. Gleaming silver, fine china, crisp linens, and a gracious atmosphere make this an occasion to remember. Choice of entree includes baked ham or brandicot chicken served with salad, vegetable, potatoes, freshly baked bread and old-fashioned ice cream.

BIRTHDAY PARTIES AT OLD PRAIRIE TOWN

Celebrate your child’s birthday in an oldfashioned way they will never forget. Choose from a variety of party packages that can be catered to your child’s interest. Parties include a volunteer in period custom to lead the party as well as set-up and clean-up. Parties are two hours in length and can be reserved any day of the week throughout the year except holidays.

Old Fashioned Birthday Party Price: $10 per participant Ages 6-12 Hosted in our one-room country schoolhouse, this party comes with old-fashioned turnof-the century fun. Included is a “session” with the schoolmarm playing games from the past. Guests will share an old-fashioned cake with ice cream and lemonade. We furnish handcrafted favors, a prize and a tour. Children’s Victorian Tea Party Price: $10 per participant Ages 6-12 Your child and guests can dress up in costumes from a “surprise trunk” and will be treated to an elegant birthday tea. We provide finger food and cookies just like the in the Victorian era when tea was considered a social event. Minimum 10; maximum 15. Two hours.

Preston Hale Room An elegant and spacious room on the north side of the mansion, the Preston Hale Room is a great space for receptions, meetings, and parties. Seating and tables can be arranged to best fit your event. Full kitchen facilities are available. The room comfortably seats 72.

Ted Ensley Gardens The Ted Ensley Gardens are located on the west side of scenic Lake Shawnee, offering a great panoramic view. They provide a beautiful, 9.5-acre setting with a wealth of design ideas and spectacular plantings. The Garden’s entrance is at the Trailhead facility located north of West Edge Road and 37th Street. The entrance begins with a beautiful 60-foot covered bridge and continues through to meditation and rock gardens, annual and perennial beds, rose and water gardens, a gazebo, pergola, pagoda, waterfalls, and several ponds. An arboretum with 120 species of trees is just across the street. An adjoining natural area is under development.

Campground Policies • 121 campsites with electricity on year-round; 30-amp and 50-amp service available. • Sites 55-56 are handicap accessible • 2 bath houses on-site include showers, bathrooms, and a laundry area. • A playground and beach area are available to campground patrons only. No lifeguard is on duty. • A dump station and a water station is available for use. Fee is $8 for non-campers. • Dogs on a leash are welcome.
