Cancellation

Programs may be combined or cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. A full refund or account credit will be issued for programs, sports leagues or shelter reservations cancelled by the SCP+R Department. Credit card refunds can only be processed if program was cancelled by SCP+R.

Refund

Sports Leagues and Clinics, Programs, Room Rentals – Refunds will be issued with a 20 percent cancellation fee if cancelled by participant at least 21 days prior to the program start date.

Cancellations less than 21 days prior to the start date will receive a 50 percent account credit which shall be utilized within 12 months.

Shelter Rentals and Old Prairie Town/Ward-Meade Refunds will be issued with a 20 percent cancellation fee for rentals cancelled by the participant at least 60 days prior to the reservation.

Cancellations less than 60 days prior to the reservation date will receive a 50 percent account credit.

No account credit will be issued if cancellation is less than seven days of reservation. Any shelter transfer shall follow the refund policy. Transfers to a lower price shelter shall not yield a refund. Account credit shall be utilized within 12 months.

Campground

All campground fees are nonrefundable including unused reservations.

New trails programs highlight summer recreation offerings How much do you know about Shawnee County Parks + Recreation’s trails? Chances are you are familiar with the 8-mile Shunga Trail that runs from Fairlawn near the Crestview Shelter House to NE 2nd or the 7.2-mile Lake Shawnee Trail.

Walking, running and bicycling are the most common activities along SCP+R’s more than 50 miles of trails, but have you thought about the history of trails that today cut through wooded areas that were once pastures or about identifying prairie plants and trees along a trail?

This summer, Terri Branden of SCP+R’s forestry division will lead three new trails programs in three different parks: a prairie plant walk in Skyline Park, a tree and history walk through the Dornwood Nature Trails, and bird watching in the Warren Nature Area adjacent to the Shunga Trail. Branden has a background in interpretive programs.

The historic Skyline Park is the site of renewed interest since Azura Credit Union made a major gift to enhance trails and the park, including eventually adding interpretive signage. Over the past 20 years, a great deal of work has been done to restore the park’s prairie areas. Members of Westar’s Green Team have helped with the restoration.

“The hill was horribly over-grazed as a pasture before it became a park,” explains Tom Hammer who heads SCP+R’s forestry division. “Now, the park gives you a unique environment where you can travel in and out of prairie and woodland areas. It gives wildlife extra areas to find cover which is beneficial to a lot of animals.”

Foxes, coyotes and deer have been seen in the park, but Hammer says the animals quickly shy away from humans. Nearby land outside the park provides water to help sustain wildlife.

Each spring, the forestry staff hopes to do a controlled burn in Skyline Park to rid the prairie area of woody plants and open up space for the sun to promote the growth of warm season plants including grasses and prairie flowers such as butterfly milkweed which is obvious by its bright orange color, indigo, blooming lead plant and purple prairie clover. June is a good viewing month but some plants bloom through July.

New trail markers have been added to the park thanks to Azura Credit Union and the Kansas Trails Council added a fourth trail loop to the park last year.

Planning is underway to add a parking lot near the park entrance. “Open gate” days may also be scheduled to provide access for those who can only get to the top of the park by driving.

Another trail Hammer recommends because, like the Azura Trails at Skyline Park, it is easy to navigate is the Warren Nature Area off of the Shunga Trail. The 4-mile natural surface trail runs through the wooded area just south of the paved trail starting in Felker Park at 25th and Gage. The nature area will be the site of a bird watching program led by Branden.

Another relatively undiscovered but interesting set of trails is at Dornwood Park. The remnants of what used to be a dairy farm are still visible near wooded areas that were once pastures. Six miles of trails traverse through the area. Popular with mountain bikers, the trails are drawing more hikers. Branden will lead a summer program identifying trees and some of the history of the trail area accessible from the east edge of the park

The Kansas Trails Council is an important partner in creating and maintaining Shawnee County Parks + Recreation trails. “There’s a pretty extensive trail system, some of which has been there for 40 years,” says Hammer.

“There are various foundations from farm buildings as well as quarries from which they dug rock to build the house and other buildings. There are also a couple of old wells with above ground rock structures.”

During this summer’s program, visitors will learn how the land might have looked 80 to 100 years ago as a dairy farm vs. the oak/history forest that covers the ground today. Hammer says the land has been going through a forest succession for more than 50 years to get to this point.

“It’s interesting to talk about how long it took this land to become a mature forest and the work it will take now to keep it this way vs. when this was a series of grazing pastures or feeding lands for cattle,” Hammer says.

So next time you’re looking for a trail or just looking for something to do, Hammer advises, “Get off the beaten path. Just go out and find a new trail.”

Shawnee County Parks + Recreation’s more than 50 miles of trails offer a leisurely stroll with side ventures into beautiful gardens, or a hike, run or mountain bike ride up hilly terrain leading to panoramic views of the county. There are more than 27 miles of paved trails and more than 23 miles of natural surface trails running through forested, prairie and open natural areas. Shawnee County Parks + Recreation is continually increasing the number and length of trails in our community while connecting as many trails as possible.

Shunga Trail – 8-mile paved concrete pedestrian/bicycle trail beginning at Crestview Park (near SW 27th and Fairlawn) and continuing east to SE 2nd.

The trail will eventually stretch across Topeka.

Lake Shawnee Trail – 7.2-mile paved concrete pedestrian/bicycle trail encircling the lake.

Dornwood Nature Trail – 6-miles of natural surface, woodland hiking trail accessible from SE 25th and Highland.

Landon Trail – 4.75-mile paved and gravel trail along an abandoned railroad track running from SE 15th to SE 45th.

Azura Trails at Skyline Park – Four single-track loop trails comprising 4.7 miles of natural surface trails through wooded and prairie areas.

Warren Nature Area – 4 miles of natural surface trails beginning at SW 25th and Gage east of Felker Park. The trail includes a wetland to slow and clean runoff water from streets and neighborhoods. Many birds, mammals and aquatic species can be found here.

Welton Grove Park – 3 miles of natural surface trails.

Shawnee North Nature Trail – 2-mile natural surface trail on undeveloped parkland comprised of grasslands and

wooded areas. The first quarter-mile is asphalt paved for accessibility. Shawnee North Community Park also has a .8 mile paved fitness loop trail encircling the west side of the park.

Deer Creek Trail – 2-mile trail from SE Golden to SE 6th and SE 6th to SE 10th.

Grant-Bradbury – Located west of Forbes Field, 2 miles of natural surface trails run through 80-acres of virgin prairie that has never been plowed. The area includes hundreds of native prairie species, some of which are scarcely found elsewhere in the state.

Soldier Creek Trail – 1.8-mile paved concrete bicycle/pedestrian trail from NE Garfield Park to NW Lyman Road.

Orville Rice Nature Trail – 1-mile mowed grass single track trail following Shunga Creek from SW Gage to Shunga Glen Park.

Oakland-Billard/Santa Fe Park Trails – 1.6 miles of paved trail.

Freedom Valley – .75-mile concrete path.

Clarion Woods Trail – One-half mile single-track trail through a red cedar forest.

Brookfield Park – .3-mile paved trail.

The Kossover Tennis Center offers low cost, organized programs and supervised tennis play for the entire community. The Tennis Center is open April 1 – mid-October, seven days a week, except during inclement weather and holidays. Courts are available 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Facility lights are available for use in the spring/summer until 10 p.m. and in the fall until 8 p.m. Hours are subject to change due to reservation requests and court use.

Rossville Pool gets update for 10th anniversary Ten years ago, the citizens of Rossville accomplished something very few communities even attempt. Starting with a vision, they raised the funds to build a community pool.

Shawnee County Parks + Recreation was approached to add the guard house and the Buhler Recreation Building with SCP+R then maintaining and operating the facility. “A facility that is much more than just a pool was accomplished by a small group of individuals in the Rossville Community,� says John Knight, SCP+R director.

Knight explains that many smaller communities would like to have a pool but are awestruck at how much money has to be raised. Few attempt, let alone accomplish the task.

For its 10th anniversary, the Rossville Pool has received a face lift. The pool basin has been painted and a needed shade structure has been added along with new lockers. Dave Allacher, SCP+R aquatics supervisor, says the improvements will benefit swimmers for years to come.

All of the proceeds for this event go to local and global conservation efforts.

The plant sale will take place in the parking lot of the zoo. Admission to the zoo is NOT required.

Teacher Appreciation Night – Wednesday, August 9th The Topeka Zoo is hosting a Teacher Development Workshop for area educators, administrators, and interested people to learn more about incorporating environmental education into their curriculum and classrooms! One hour of professional development graduate credit from Baker University will be available as well. The event runs from 1-5 p.m. on Friday, July 7th, and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, July 8th.

Botanical Garden The Ward-Meade Botanical Garden was established in 1963. There are approximately 500 varieties of trees and shrubs in the 2.5-acre garden in addition to the annual flowers planted each year. The garden includes many plants requiring shade as well as many unusual specimen plants. The area has three water gardens including a stream, bridge, gazebo and waterfall. Many weddings are held in the garden each year.

Ward Cabin Hearth Meals $18 per person This is one of the most popular, unique meals served at Old Prairie Town, so make your reservations early! Meals are served at fireside tables in the Ward cabin and diners are treated to special hearth-cooking demonstrations with a side dish of history, all provided by costumed volunteers. These family style meals are offered Oct. 15-March 15 with reservations for groups of 12-18.

Menu Hearth-cooked ham. or smoked turkey, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, fruit, Dutch ovenbaked biscuits, hearth-baked molasses cookies, old-fashioned ice cream, cider and coffee.

Victorian Dinner $25 per person Enjoy a delightful Victorian meal served buffetstyle in the elegant dining room of the 1870s Ward-Meade mansion. Gleaming silver, fine china, crisp linens and a gracious atmosphere make this an occasion to remember. Choice of entree includes baked ham or chicken served with salad, vegetable, potatoes, freshly baked scones and old-fashioned ice cream. Minimum 25. Maximum 72.

Picnic Basket Dinner $12 per person The delicious hot chicken pocket sandwich featuring Old Prairie Town’s own special recipe makes the picnic basket a year-round favorite.

Also included in the basket are fruit, cole slaw or potato salad, pickle, cookie, brownbread ice cream and a drink. Minimum 15.

Cider Sipping and Hearth-Baked Cookies $5.50 per person Sit by the fire in our cozy log cabin and enjoy a demonstration of molasses cookies being baked on the hearth. Then sample the warm, spicy treats along with tangy apple cider.

Celebrate your child’s birthday in an oldfashioned way. Choose from two party packages. Parties include a volunteer in period costume to lead the party as well as set-up and clean-up. Parties are two hours in length and can be booked any day of the week throughout the year except holidays.

Old-Fashioned Birthday Party (Ages 6–12 yrs.) $10 per participant. Minimum 10. Maximum 15.

This party is in our one-room country schoolhouse with old-fashioned turn-of-thecentury fun. This party includes a “session” with the schoolmarm playing old-time games.

Guests will share an old-fashioned cake with ice cream and lemonade. We also furnish handcrafted favors, a prize and a tour.

Rose Garden Weddings Imagine the romantic beauty of your wedding in the Reinisch Rose Garden. Peak blooming times for the 5,500 roses are late May into early June, and again in early to mid-September.

The Carousel Party Room north of the garden accommodates final wedding and dressing preparations.

The Garden’s entrance is at the Trailhead facility located north of West Edge Road and 37th Street. The entrance begins with a beautiful 60-foot covered bridge and continues through to meditation and rock gardens, annual and perennial beds, rose and water gardens, a gazebo, pergola, pagoda, waterfalls, and several ponds. An arboretum with 80 species of trees is just across the street. An adjoining natural area is under development.

Trails Shawnee County Parks + Recreation’s more than 50 miles of trails offer a leisurely stroll with side ventures into beautiful gardens, or a hike, run or mountain bike ride up hilly terrain leading to panoramic views of the county.

There are nearly 30 miles of paved trails and more than 20 miles of natural surface trails running through forested, prairie and open natural areas.
