REFUND POLICY AND PROCEDURE

It is the intention of Shawnee County Parks + Recreation (SCP+R) to offer a refund and/ or account credit for participants who qualify and meet the requirements. Participants who paid by cash, check or credit card will be issued a refund by check. All check refunds follow the County Treasurer’s bill paying schedule. There are no cash refunds.

CANCELLATION

Programs may be combined or cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. A full refund or account credit will be issued for programs, sports leagues or shelter reservations cancelled by the SCP+R Department. Credit card refunds can only be processed if program was cancelled by SCP+R.

SPORTS LEAGUES AND CLINICS, PROGRAMS, ROOM RENTALS

Refunds will be issued with a 20% cancellation fee if cancelled by participant at least twenty-one (21) days prior to the program start date. Cancellations less than twenty-one (21) days prior to the start date will receive a 50% account credit. Account credit shall be utilized within twelve (12) months.

SHELTER RENTALS AND OLD PRAIRIE TOWN/WARD-MEADE

Refunds will be issued with a 20% cancellation fee for rentals cancelled by the participant at least sixty (60) days prior to the reservation. Cancellations less than sixty (60) days prior to the reservation date will receive a 50% account credit. No account credit will be issued if cancellation is less than seven (7) days of reservation. Any shelter transfer shall follow the refund policy.

Transfers to a lower price shelter shall not yield a refund. Account credit shall be utilized within twelve (12) months.

CAMPGROUND

All campground fees are non-refundable including unused reservations.

A Refund Request Form must be completed by the participant. Forms are available at parks.snco.us, Shawnee County Parks + Recreation community centers, administrative offices or by calling 251-6800 and a form can be mailed or emailed to a participant.

Playing sports enhances quality of life and creates lifetime memories for participants of all ages – from youth T-Ball players to senior basketball participants.

In 2017, Shawnee County Parks + Recreation invested $500,000 in facility improvements at 10 locations to enhance the summer sports experience. Highlights include: • Two new ag lime surface infields at Lake Shawnee Girls Softball Complex reduced rainouts to just nine total days for both league and tournament play.

• New artificial turf at Jerry Robertson Field at Bettis Family Sports Complex. New artificial pitcher’s mound increases playability in inclement weather.

• New overhead safety netting above quad fields at Bettis Family Sports Complex protects spectators from foul balls.

• New scoreboards at Reuger Softball Complex.

• Reconstruction of McDonald Field with 100 tons of silt infield, new grass and an ag lime batters circle, running lanes and warning tracks to reduce rainouts.

• Renovation of two Felker Park softball fields with 100 tons of red shale and three tons of Turface MVP. Laser graded for proper drainage and 70-foot base pegs were added for championship play.

SCP+R’s Sports Division greatly reduced the number of rained out games throughout all complexes in 2017, making for more efficient league play across the board. While part of that can be attributed to lower rain totals than the year before, Kevin Stoner, sports field manager, and his crew deserve a lot of credit as well. After a heavy rain, crews would often start early the following day to pump inches of water off of a ball diamond, hand-rake infields to allow the sun and breeze to dry it – all before dragging the field smooth and putting baselines down in time for an early evening game.

Summer sports experiences range from instructional to recreational to highly competitive.

Compared to other options around the region, the SCP+R Sports Division surveys other parks and recreation departments to make sure that SCP+R offers a good value and high quality facilities. Perhaps the best testament to this is that the number of teams and participants were up “across the board” in 2017. Still, to Derrick Mead, SCP+R youth sports manager, what matters most is each individual’s experience.

“I like seeing the average sports fan sign up for a league in consecutive sessions because he or she had such a good time with it the last time around,” he says.

“I identify with our returning participants. There’s definitely something to be said for repeat customers and happy consumers.”

FootGolf Along with traditional golf, Forbes offers FootGolf, a unique blend of the popular sports of soccer and golf.

The game is played with a soccer ball on the golf course but with separate greens featuring 21-inch diameter cups. The goal of FootGolf is to kick the ball in the hole with the fewest strokes possible. The course is set up as an 18 -hole par-66 layout measuring 2,057 yards.

KOSSOVER Tennis Center Hours of Operation

The Kossover Tennis Center offers low-cost, organized programs and supervised tennis play for the entire community. The Tennis Center is open April 1 – mid-October, seven days a week, except during inclement weather and holidays. Courts are available 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Facility lights are available for use in the spring/summer until 10 p.m. and in the fall until 8 p.m. Hours are subject to change due to reservation requests and court use.

Daily Court Fees $2 per person per day

Helen Hocker Theater offers three sessions of summer workshops for youth aimed at giving children a quality artistic experience, seeking the best in each individual to guide them in their creative growth, providing top-notch learning in a fun environment and stressing the value and importance of each individual.

Age groups include 4-5, 6-7 for half-day camps, and 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13 for full-day camps.

Workshops/camps run for three threeweek sessions and fee amounts are per session. There is a $25 processing fee for cancellations. Cancellations within a week are non-refundable.

Shawnee County Parks + Recreation’s more than 50 miles of trails offer a leisurely stroll with side ventures into beautiful gardens, or a hike, run or mountain bike ride up hilly terrain leading to panoramic views of the county. There are more than 27 miles of paved trails and more than 26 miles of natural surface trails running through forested, prairie and open natural areas. Shawnee County Parks + Recreation is continually increasing the number and length of trails in our community while connecting as many trails as possible.

Shunga Trail – 8.5-mile paved concrete pedestrian/bicycle trail beginning at SW 29th and McClure and continuing east to SE 2nd.

The trail will eventually stretch across Topeka.

Brookfield Park – .3-mile paved trail.

Lake Shawnee Trail – 7-mile paved concrete pedestrian/bicycle trail encircling the lake.

Dornwood Nature Trail – 9.9 miles of natural surface, woodland hiking trails accessible from SE 25th and Highland.

Landon Trail – 4.75-mile paved and gravel trail along an abandoned railroad track running from SE 15th to SE 45th.

Azura Trails at Skyline Park – Four singletrack loop trails comprising 4.7 miles of natural surface trails through wooded and prairie areas.

Warren Nature Area – 4 miles of natural surface trails beginning at SW 25th and Gage east of Felker Park. The trail includes a wetland to slow and clean runoff water from streets and neighborhoods. Many birds, mammals and aquatic species can be found here.

Welton Grove Park – 3 miles of natural surface trails.

Clarion Woods Trail – 1.54 miles of singletrack trail through a red cedar forest.

Shawnee North Nature Trail – 2-mile natural surface trail on undeveloped parkland comprised of grasslands and wooded areas.

Shawnee North Community Park also has a .8 mile paved fitness loop trail encircling the west side of the park.

Deer Creek Trail – 2-mile trail from SE Golden to SE 6th and SE 6th to SE 10th.

Grant-Bradbury – Located west of Forbes Field, 2 miles of natural surface trails run through 80 acres of virgin prairie that has never been plowed. The area includes hundreds of native prairie species, some of which are scarcely found elsewhere in the state.

Soldier Creek Trail – 1.8-mile paved concrete bicycle/pedestrian trail from NE Garfield Park to NW Lyman Road.

Orville Rice Nature Trail – 1-mile mowed grass single track trail following Shunga Creek from SW Gage to the Shunga Trail near McDonald Field.

Oakland-Billard/Santa Fe Park Trails – 1.6 miles of paved trail.

Freedom Valley – .75-mile concrete path.

Bocce Ball will be played at the court at the east end of the Felker Softball Complex parking lot at 2500 SW Gage. The court is first-come, first served basis. Equipment will be furnished for classes, instruction and play at 9 a.m. Tuesdays and 6 p.m. Thursdays from May 3 through late October. Lessons are free.

Youth Summer Soccer League This is a CoRec league. All divisions will play 6-on-6. Travel within the county may be required for practices. T-shirt provided. Shin guards and cleats are optional. Registration deadline is May 9.

Bright Circle is a KDHE licensed preschool program serving children age 3-5 years old. We’ve been educating preschool aged children for more than 35 years! We believe that children learn best through the natural play environment.

The early years of a child’s life are most important because that is when the characteristics of their personalities and their own self-image develop. We strive to provide appropriate activities to develop each child socially, emotionally, physically and cognitively. Through these activities, children are encouraged to learn through play, and develop their skills through self-learning, peer education and teacher-directed activities.

We value not just learning, but the love of learning as well.

TDC’s Creative Learning Adventures is a statelicensed preschool program serving children ages 3-5 years, August through May. TDC Learning Centers, Inc. has been providing highquality, affordable early education in the Topeka community for 55 years!

Weekly themes combined with a research-based curriculum ensure that children are having fun while learning and being prepared for kindergarten. Play and positive interaction with teachers and other children support social, emotional and intellectual growth. Special curriculum components encourage nutrition, physical fitness and socio-emotional growth. Our program spans all areas of a child’s development, offering a well-rounded, high-quality learning experience.

Class sizes are small, with a maximum of 12 children per session. We have two classrooms that are located in the Shawnee North Community Center. Parents are our partners and are encouraged to participate in classroom activities.

Parent/teacher conferences are held twice each year where parents help develop their child’s Individual Education Plan. Developmental assessments are conducted twice each year and children who are kindergarten-bound have an additional school readiness assessment. Children must be 3 years old and fully potty trained to participate.

Established in 1963, the 2.5 acre Ward-Meade Botanical Garden contains approximately 500 varieties of trees and shrubs plus annual flowers planted each year.

The garden includes many plants requiring shade as well as many unusual specimen plants.

It features a National Hosta Display Garden and National Day Lily Display Garden. The area has three water gardens including Anna’s Asian Reading Garden, a stream, a bridge, a gazebo and waterfall. Weddings can be held at this location as well. Call 785-251-6993 for more information.

Ward Cabin Hearth Meals This unique meal is one of the more popular activities at Old Prairie Town, so make your reservations early! Meals are served at fireside tables in the Ward cabin, and diners are treated to special hearth-cooking demonstrations with a side dish of history, all provided by costumed volunteers.

These family style meals are offered from October 15 through March 15 with reservations for groups of 12-18.

Old-Fashioned Birthday Party (Ages 6–12 yrs.) $10 per participant. Minimum 10. Maximum 15.

This party is held in our one-room country schoolhouse with old-fashioned turn-of-the century fun. This party includes a “session” with the schoolmarm playing old time games. Guests will share an old-fashioned cake with ice cream and lemonade. We also furnish handcrafted favors, a prize and a tour. Minimum 10; maximum 15.

Ted Ensley Gardens The Ted Ensley Gardens are located on the west side of scenic Lake Shawnee, offering a great panoramic view. They provide a beautiful, 9.5-acre setting with a wealth of design ideas and spectacular plantings.

The Garden’s entrance is at the Trailhead facility located north of West Edge Road and 37th Street. The entrance begins with a beautiful 60-foot covered bridge and continues through to meditation and rock gardens, annual and perennial beds, rose and water gardens, a gazebo, pergola, pagoda, waterfalls, and several ponds. An arboretum with 80 species of trees is just across the street.

An adjoining natural area is under development.

• Ice and firewood are sold at the concession area from April 15 to Oct. 15.

Held in the parking lot of the Topeka Zoo, the second annual Native Wildflower Sale will offer a wide variety of native wildflowers to cover all blooming seasons through spring, summer, and fall. More than two dozen varieties will be available.

All wild flowers sold will be native to this part of northeast Kansas.

100 percent of proceeds go the zoo’s Conservation Fund. The Wild Flower sale will be combined with the first annual Pollinator Palooza, an event to celebrate Pollinators.

Zoo staff will be cooking up fresh seafood samples hot off the grill on the zoo’s sidewalk for guests to enjoy, and offering hands-on activities to highlight our dependence on the ocean and how we can make a positive impact on the health of the world’s oceans from right here in northeast Kansas.
