SHAWNEE COUNTY PARKS + RECREATION MISSION: “Shawnee County Parks and Recreation is an essential service established to improve quality of life for all residents of the county by proactively responding to changing demographics, emerging trends while maximizing all available resources in providing quality parks, recreation facilities and programs that enhance the residents health, promotes economic vitality and long term sustainability now and for future generations.”

REFUND POLICY AND PROCEDURE It is the intention of Shawnee County Parks + Recreation to offer a refund and/or account credit for participants who qualify and meet the requirements. Participants who paid by cash, check or credit card will be issued a refund by check. All check refunds follow the County Treasurer’s bill paying schedule. There are no cash refunds.

CANCELLATION Programs may be combined or cancelled due to insufficient enrollment.

A full refund or account credit will be issued for programs, sports leagues or shelter reservations cancelled by the SCP+R Department. Credit card refunds can only be processed if program was cancelled by SCP+R. SPORTS LEAGUES AND CLINICS, PROGRAMS, ROOM RENTALS Refunds will be issued with a 20 percent cancellation fee if cancelled by participant at least 21 days prior to the program start date. Cancellations less than 21 days prior to the start date will receive a 50 percent account credit. Account credit shall be utilized within 12 months.

SHELTER RENTALS AND OLD PRAIRIE TOWN/WARD-MEADE Shelter Rentals and Old Prairie Town/Ward-Meade - Refunds will be issued with a 20 percent cancellation fee for rentals cancelled by the participant at least 60 days prior to the reservation. Cancellations fewer than 60 days prior to the reservation date will receive a 50 percent account credit. No account credit will be issued if cancellation is fewer than seven days of reservation. Any shelter transfer shall follow the refund policy. Transfers to a lower price shelter shall not yield a refund.

Account credit shall be utilized within 12 months.

CAMPGROUND All campground fees are non-refundable including unused reservations.

SCHOLARSHIPS “Our vision for programming is to reach out to people of all ages to encourage them to experience parks and recreation facilities through well-designed programs that create a lifetime of memories.”

Shawnee County Parks + Recreation provides a wide variety of recreation opportunities for youth, yet not all families are able to afford the fees for participation in our programs. A youth scholarship program has been designed to assist those who meet the financial guidelines as set forth. Scholarship approval is good from Feb. 1, 2020 to Jan. 31, 2021.

APPLE FESTIVAL CELEBRATES ITS 40TH ANNIVERSARY

“What would Jesus do?” That phrase and the book, “In His Steps” made the Rev. Charles Sheldon so famous that he built a study in the back yard of his Topeka home as a refuge where he could escape a stream of visitors, including journalists, and get his work done.

Today, the study is all that is left of Sheldon’s one-time home. It now stands at the Clay Street entrance to Old Prairie Town.

A fall tradition in Shawnee County celebrates 40 years at Old Prairie Town this year. Apple Festival became a two-day event in 2017. One of northeast Kansas’ most popular events, this year’s festival features pioneer skill demonstrations, blacksmiths, quilters, musicians, craftsmen and culinary artists. Enjoy food from bierocks to barbeque and beverages from sarsaparilla to Green Rivers and, of course, enjoy apple pie, apples in caramel, apple fritters and apple cider.

Special attractions include the Kansas Muzzle Loaders Association and Spirit Dancer Dennis Rogers. The Wheatstock Music Festival is again part of Apple Festival. Enjoy a meal beneath the tent and listen to top area folk musicians. $7 at the gate; advance tickets $10 for 2-day tickets, $5 for 1-day tickets, children 5 & under free

Prior to this past year, the study had not been open to the public. Thanks to a fundraising effort, the study has been completely revamped with a new roof and siding, new interior walls and a restored fireplace, and a new ADA accessible entrance. Now, every visitor to Old Prairie Town can learn about the Congregationalist minister whose book popularized the phrase, “What would Jesus do?”

Sheldon’s desk and typewriter, portrait, book collection, umbrella and suitcase are among the artifacts now on display in the study along with a framed copy of the Topeka Daily Capital that Sheldon was invited to edit, “as Jesus would do.”

Based on a fictitious series of sermons in which the a minister asked members of his church to ask before making any major decision, “What would Jesus do?”, Sheldon’s book has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide.

n the three years that Boys & Girls Club of Topeka has been leasing Velma K. Paris Community Center and offering positive programs for youth, the juvenile crime rate in the surrounding Montara community has dropped by 72.7 percent. Since Boys & Girls Club began managing the Juan Poppy Abbott Center the number of teens served climbed from 15 to 181. BGCT has served 61,287 meals. A food pantry run by the teens at the center has served 2,210 individuals in 620 households.

These successes reflect the fruits of a partnership between BGCT and Shawnee County Parks + Recreation, says Dawn McWilliams, Boys & Girls Club of Topeka CEO. “It’s a perfect partnership with where these community centers are located, the needs that exist and what we [BGCT] do,” says McWilliams. “We’re a collaboration working to reach kids, where they need us and when they need us with a shared focus on building a stronger community through the provision of an environment that supports, facilitates and strengthens positive youth development. “ “BGCT provides young people with a safe place to go after school and during the summer as well as a positive outlet for their energy,” says McWilliams. “Out of school hours serve as the essential link between school and home, offering the greatest opportunity to influence the future of our kids and our community!”

serving youth Leasing underused buildings made available by SCP+R, BGCT expanded upon SCP+R’s after school program to serve youth and to leverage opportunities to gain additional funding. The success at Velma K. Paris Community Center prompted the expansion of BGCT sites into four USD 437 elementary schools.

BGCT’s focus is to engage and inspire through the exploration of innovative programs designed to empower youth and teens to excel in school, become good citizens and lead healthy, productive lives.

Programs include sports & recreation, education, the arts, health and wellness, career development, character and leadership. Programs provide meaningful experiences today, so kids are ready to chase their dreams tomorrow.

McWilliams notes that BGCT seeks to ensure that all kids, especially those who need the club most, have a positive and enriching experience when the school bell rings, putting them on the path to success.

“We are an [especially] important partner for working families and for youth in foster care,” McWilliams notes.

The partnership with SCP+R, “… has addressed many community needs, from providing the foundation to allow BGCT to extend reach to youth and families in the Montara community to establish a specialized safe and exciting Center focused on meeting the unique needs of teens,” says McWilliams.

“We used to offer teen services in one room at our Adams Club,” she says. “The opening of a Teen Center has allowed expansion of programs such as career readiness training, opportunities such as teen clubs that develop leadership skills and experiences like volunteer initiatives, college visits and community engagement.”

Most importantly, the center has expanded BGCT’s capacity to serve more teens more often and has allowed teens to exercise their civic engagement and leadership skills and gain job important skills through the establishment of a Food Pantry that teens operate year-round to address food scarcity issues that exist in their community.

Parks and recreation facilities and programs are known to increase property values, help attract and keep families and businesses in a community and to reduce juvenile crime. Noting that juvenile crime is

highest between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. when youths are idle, McWilliams emphasizes that the partnership is supporting working parents, ensuring that kids are safe and that they belong to something positive.

“Creating quality of life and quality of place encompasses our entire community,” says Tim Laurent, SCP+R director. “Different parts of our community have different needs and our partnerships are an innovative approach to meeting people where they are in life and helping them onto the next level.”

The partnership has provided a financial benefit to taxpayers as well since leasing Abbott Center to BGCT has helped eliminate a $65,000 operating loss for the county. SCP+R does provide utilities and maintenance support to make the leases affordable for BGCT. It Takes a Village finds a permanent home at Rice Community Center It Takes a Village has found a permanent home at Shawnee County Parks + Recreation’s Rice Community Center. Steven Massey founded the program when he returned from Los Angeles to his native Topeka after taking part in similar programs in L.A. The program aims to empower at-risk youth on Topeka’s east side through creative and performing arts.

The program has bounced around to several locations but needed a permanent home. The lightly used Rice Community Center was a perfect fit.

It Takes a Village puts on such productions as the Chocolate Nutcracker at Topeka Performing Arts Center. Recognizing that there are sports facilities, but some youth are not into sports, Massey hopes to partner with volunteers to offer photography, singing, painting, drawing music production and more. As for his theater productions, Massey says he never turns away a youth. “If someone can take a chance on me, I can take a chance on them,” he says. “I will never turn a child away.”

A safe, fun environment for children to build tap and ballet skills, and be introduced to jazz dance. This class is for those who have had some previous training or have advanced past Beginner Gymnastics. Instructors emphasize performing skills with good form and consistency. Strength and flexibility have a greater focus and importance at this level as most of these skills begin to emerge quickly when the gymnast has increased her strength.

Advanced Gymnastics:

Prerequisite: Standing back-handspring, back walkover. Advanced Gymnastics is the highest level in the Recreational Program.

This class will focus on run-tumbling and connecting multiple skills together on floor as well as learning rotations/flips. Skills are progressed on the other apparatus as well based on ability.

This class is specifically designed for the dancer who has little to no experience with tumbling but wants to learn basic acro skills. TRAILS

Shawnee County Parks + Recreation’s nearly 60 miles of trails offer a leisurely stroll with side ventures into beautiful gardens, or a hike, run or mountain bike ride up hilly terrain leading to panoramic views of the county. There are 30 miles of paved trails and nearly 28 miles of natural surface trails running through forested, prairie and open natural areas. Shawnee County Parks + Recreation is continually increasing the number and length of trails in our community while connecting as many trails as possible.

Shunga Trail – 8.5-mile paved concrete pedestrian/bicycle trail beginning at 29th and McClure and continuing east to SE 2nd. The trail will eventually stretch across Topeka.

Lake Shawnee Trail – 7-mile paved concrete pedestrian/bicycle trail encircling the lake.

Dornwood Nature Trail – 9.9 miles of natural surface, woodland hiking trail accessible from SE 25th and Highland.

Landon Trail – 4.75-mile paved and gravel trail along an abandoned railroad track running from SE 15th to SE 45th.

Azura Trails at Skyline Park – Four single-track loop trails comprising 4.47 miles of natural surface trails through wooded and prairie areas offering the most panoramic views of Shawnee County from the famed Burnett’s Mound.

Warren Nature Area – 4 miles of natural surface trails beginning at SW 25th and Gage east of Felker Park. The trail includes a wetland to slow and clean runoff water from streets and neighborhoods. Many birds, mammals and aquatic species can be found here.

Welton Grove Park – 3 miles of natural surface trails.

Gage Park Fitness Loop Trail – 2-mile paved trail encircling Gage Park.

Shawnee North Nature Trail – 2-mile natural surface trail on undeveloped parkland comprised of grasslands and wooded areas.

Shawnee North Community Park also has a .8 mile paved fitness loop trail encircling the west side of the park.

Deer Creek Trail – 2-mile trail from SE Golden to SE 6th and SE 6th to SE 10th.

Grant-Bradbury – Located west of Forbes Field, 2 miles of natural surface trails run through 80-acres of virgin prairie that has never been plowed. The area includes hundreds of native prairie species, some of which are scarcely found elsewhere in the state.

Soldier Creek Trail – 1.8-mile paved concrete bicycle/pedestrian trail from NE Garfield Park to NW Lyman Road.

We’re taking fun to the parks, events, and even your work. Meet you there! Mobile recreation programs make it even easier to bring fun and play to where people are —and not just for kids! We deliver healthy activities all over town. The Rec+Roll van is outfitted with balls, hula hoops, games, art and fitness supplies music and a PA system with microphones. Look for the Rec+Roll van in your neighborhood. A calendar of scheduled appearances is available at parks.snco.us.

SCP+R can also bring the van to your work for adult recess, staff team building for retreats, or fitness programs. This is a great way to add an exciting fitness component to your next work event. Play is for all ages.

Are you looking for a unique experience for your class or youth group? Then come and spend an hour in our authentic one-room schoolhouse learning about our Kansas country school legacy, ciphering on slates, participating in a spelling bee and playing old-time games.

MEALS FOR GROUPS AND ORGANIZATIONS The following meal programs include two hours room rental.

Ward Cabin Hearth Meals This unique meal is one of the more popular activities at Old Prairie Town, so make your reservations early! Meals are served at fireside tables in the Ward cabin, and diners are treated to special hearth-cooking demonstrations with a side dish of history, all provided by costumed volunteers.

These family style meals are offered from Oct. 15 through March 15 with reservations for groups of 12-18.

The Ward-Meade Botanical Garden was established in 1963. There are approximately 500 varieties of trees and shrubs in the 2.5acre garden in addition to the annual flowers planted each year. The garden includes many plants requiring shade as well as many unusual specimen plants. The area has three water gardens including Anna’s Asian Reading Garden, which consists of three pools, a stream, bridge, gazebo and waterfall.

BIRTHDAY PARTIES AT OLD PRAIRIE TOWN

Celebrate your child’s birthday in an oldfashioned way he or she will never forget.

Choose from a variety of party packages that can be catered to your child’s interest.

Parties include a volunteer in period costume to lead the party as well as set-up and clean-up. Parties are two hours in length and can be booked any day of the week throughout the year except holidays.

Old-Fashioned Birthday Party (Ages 6-12 yrs.)

Price: $10 per participant This party is in our one-room country schoolhouse with old-fashioned turn-of-the century fun. This party includes a “session” with the schoolmarm playing old time games.

Guests will share an old-fashioned cake with ice cream and lemonade. We also furnish handcrafted favors, a prize and a tour.

Children’s Victorian Tea Party (Ages 6-12 yrs.)

Price: $10 per participant Your child and guests can dress up in costumes from a “surprise trunk” and will be treated to an elegant birthday tea. We provide finger food and cookies just like the in the Victorian era when tea was considered a social event. Minimum 10; maximum 15. Two hours.

Ted Ensley Gardens The Ted Ensley Gardens are located on the west side of scenic Lake Shawnee, offering a great panoramic view. They provide a beautiful, 9.5-acre setting with a wealth of design ideas and spectacular plantings.

The Garden’s entrance is at the Trailhead facility located north of West Edge Road and 37th Street. The entrance begins with a beautiful 60-foot covered bridge and continues through to meditation and rock gardens, annual and perennial beds, rose and water gardens, a gazebo, pergola, pagoda, waterfalls, and several ponds. An arboretum with 120 species of trees is just across the street.

• Ice and firewood are sold at the concession area from April 15 to Oct. 15.

• Showers and restroom facilities are located at the entrance area and north end of the campground.

DISCOVER HOME SCHOOL

EVENING MONARCH BUTTERFLY PRESENTATIONS

Join the Topeka Zoo at the Kansas Museum of History as we hear a presentation on the Monarch Butterflies that are migrating across Topeka to their wintering grounds in Mexico. After the presentation we’ll catch Monarchs, tag them, and release them to finish their journey.
