TAKING UP
GOLF A LIFETIME SPORT
B
eing new to golf can be intimidating, but Shawnee County golf professionals can ease your introduction to the sport and help you on your way to a lifetime of enjoyment. The pros and assistant pros at Lake Shawnee, Cypress Ridge and Forbes Golf Courses can help you select the right set of clubs, set up a lesson plan for you and even introduce you to fellow golfers. “The best thing about golf is that it’s a lifetime sport,” says Penny Hickman, head golf pro at Cypress Ridge Golf Course. “That adds value to the game.” Also adding value to the game is getting set up with the right equipment and learning to play the game better so you can enjoy it more. Scott Mellen, head golf pro at Lake Shawnee Golf Course, explains that pros start everyone off with a player profile including how long the golfer has played, whether they have any medical conditions that restrict movement and how seriously they plan to take the game. From there, they develop a lesson plan, typically three to four weeks of lessons with the player practicing and playing in between. Then, they will do a follow-up three to four weeks later. “I could not imagine playing this game without taking a lesson,” Hickman says, even if you just take a lesson from a friend to get you started. “There is so much involved – distances, heights, how far we want the ball to travel. We have obstructions on the golf course such as trees, water and sand,” she adds. Golf, says Hickman, is 80 percent mental and she teaches the mental aspects of getting ready for the next shot or the next hole, saying, “People can really hurt their game with negative self-talk.” The pros help players overcome bad habits such as adjusting their swing or club face to avoid slicing the ball when they should really take time to understand their golf swing and adjust accordingly.
2
THE GUIDE 2019 SUMMER
“I’m all about the basics,” says Hickman, “Good grip, good stance, good posture, good alignment. These are the foundation to your golf swing.” Pros also teach club selection for uphill and downhill shots and how to hit around obstructions on the course. Mellen advises taking a group lesson vs. an individual lesson if you are worried about your game. “You’ll find out you’re not alone,” he says. Both Mellen and Hickman have sage advice for golfers who get frustrated with a bad shot. Mellen was in eighth grade when a mentor said to him, “You’re not that good to get that mad.” Hickman notes that golf legend Walter Hagen allowed himself seven bad shots per round. “How many should you allow yourself then?” she asks. “The majority of times, you’re going to hit an average shot,” says Mellen. “The goal is to make those misses fewer and more accurate. Then, you’re going to take strokes off of your game.” Hickman notes that most golfers are recreational golfers and 45 percent of them shoot over 100 per round. That tells her that most golfers are playing for the enjoyment of the game and being outside in nature. Another part of getting started is having a pro analyze your golf swing. A launch monitor can analyze your club head speed and launch trajectory and how far the ball is traveling. This can help in selecting the right set of clubs and the right type of shaft such as steel or graphite. For beginners who have yet to develop their swing, Hickman advises purchasing a packaged set of clubs. Club packages can range from $300 to $800 and may even come with 10 clubs instead of the full set of 14. This makes club selection easier for a newer player.
PARKS.SNCO.US 785.251.6800
When the time comes for a custom set of clubs, Mellen says Shawnee County Parks + Recreation golf shops can set up a golfer with clubs for anywhere from $600 to $1,500. The shops sell 15 different brands and can repair any brand of equipment. “As opposed to buying a set of clubs off the shelf, we’re here before, during and after the sale,” Mellen notes. There are many reasons to take up golf including just being outdoors on the beautiful scenic course. “Number one is fitness,” explains Hickman, adding, “You can get in 10,000 steps on the course and 25 percent of our golfers walk.” Competition is another reason. “You compete against yourself, the course, friends or even in a state tournament,” she says. Networking is another advantage. “Everyone says deals are made on the course. You meet some great people out here,” she says. “We introduce newcomers who then get invited into someone’s foursome.” Cypress Ridge Golf Course is also home to the largest junior golf program in the area with 150 participants. Visit www.shawneecountyjuniorgolf.com. The program starts with Pee Wee golf for 3-to 4-year-olds and runs all the way up to age 17. Some participants play on their school teams. “Juniors are our future,” Hickman says. “They are the future working citizens of our community.” As far as courses to play, Lake Shawnee Golf Course is the most scenic, and has zoysia on the fairways. Cypress Ridge is another challenging course and has seen more rounds of golf played since adding cart paths to the back nine holes. The fairways are a mix of fescue and rye. Forbes is a nine-hole course which is great for beginners and seniors. Mellen suggests that beginners choose a course that allows them to take their time vs. a busy course with foursomes wanting to play through. A course that is flatter and has fewer trees is also good. Golf pros can help golfers choose the best times to play, including when there are discounts such as at twilight. An excellent beginners course is Forbes Golf Course where golf pro Tylor McNeill is scheduling a two-part Intro to Golf tournament series, Junior Golf Clinics and Ladies Clinics. “We target people who might be intimidated to play a weekend round at Lake Shawnee or Cypress Ridge,” says McNeill, adding that Forbes doesn’t require players to reserve tee times and has a more affordable and relaxed atmosphere. A bucket of range balls is $5 and a round of twilight golf is $10. “There is always time for someone to get their feet wet without feeling the pressure of a lot of other people on the course,” he says. The motto at Forbes is, “There’s always time for nine.” The nine-hole conventional course has a layout comparable to an 18-hole course as opposed to Par-3 nine-hole courses. While the course is popular with beginners and seniors, it is still challenging. “People who are good at golf enjoy this course too,” says McNeill. “We have 22 bunkers for a 9-hole course.” Forbes has one of the largest senior leagues in northeast Kansas. A Men’s Club, open to anyone, plays on Tuesdays. A Ladies League plays on Wednesday nights as do company leagues. For those just starting out, the Forbes Pro Shop offers preowned clubs and equipment, some of which are demo clubs used at Lake Shawnee and Cypress Ridge. Lessons are also offered. A unique offering at Forbes is Foot Golf which saw 1,000 rounds played in its inaugural year of 2015. The 18-hole Foot Golf course is laid out on the same course as the 9-hole golf course except that there are two Foot Golf holes for every golf hole. A Foot Golf hole might be a 115 yard Par-4.

Of course, there’s also the fact that someone at the party is a murderer. Throw in the problems of Nelva Odell finding the body, a television crew showing up to tape the festivities and, last but not least, the arrival of the late boss’ new fiancee. Add a hack writer who unwittingly helps to get rid of the evidence, an actress-turned-caterer whose crab puffs keep crawling off, and a janitor who carries a gun… and It’s Murder in the Wings! www.helenhocker.com/event/its-murder
RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN’S OKLAHOMA! Bathhouse Players
July 19-Aug 4
Set in Western Native-American territory just after the turn of the century, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. Although the road to true love never runs smooth, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love’s journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road. That they will succeed in making a new life together we have no doubt, and that this new life will begin in a brand-new state provides the ultimate climax to the triumphant OKLAHOMA! www.helenhocker.com/event/oklahoma
