REFUND POLICY AND PROCEDURE

It is the intention of Shawnee County Parks + Recreation (SCP+R) to offer a refund and/or account credit for participants who qualify and meet the requirements. Participants who paid by cash, check or credit card will be issued a refund by check. All check refunds follow the County Treasurer’s bill paying schedule. There are no cash refunds.

CANCELLATION

Programs may be combined or cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. A full refund or account credit will be issued for programs, sports leagues or shelter reservations cancelled by the SCP+R Department. Credit card refunds can only be processed if program was cancelled by SCP+R.

SPORTS LEAGUES AND CLINICS, PROGRAMS, ROOM RENTALS

Refunds will be issued with a 20 percent cancellation fee if cancelled by participant at least 21 days prior to the program start date. Cancellations less than 21 days prior to the start date will receive a 50 percent account credit. Account credit shall be utilized within 12 months.

SHELTER RENTALS AND OLD PRAIRIE TOWN/WARD-MEADE

Refunds will be issued with a 20 percent cancellation fee for rentals cancelled by the participant at least 60 days prior to the reservation.

Cancellations less than 60 days prior to the reservation date will receive a 50 percent account credit. No account credit will be issued if cancellation is less than seven days of reservation. Any shelter transfer shall follow the refund policy. Transfers to a lower price shelter shall not yield a refund. Account credit shall be utilized within 12 months.

CAMPGROUND

All campground fees are non-refundable including unused reservations.

REFUND REQUEST

A Refund Request Form must be completed by participant. Forms are available at parks.snco.us, SCP+ R community centers, administrative offices or by calling 251-6800 and the refund request form can be mailed or emailed to participant.

DIRECTOR On Sept. 26 at the National Park and Recreation Association’s annual conference, Shawnee County Parks + Recreation formally received a Certificate of Accreditation from the Council on Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies. This distinction places us among the top 2 percent of park and recreation agencies in the nation.

The recognition is the culmination of a two-year process that involved every member of our staff. Why go through such a process? According to NRPA, accreditation is a distinguished mark of excellence that affords external recognition of an organization’s commitment to quality and improvement. Achieving accreditation is our commitment to the public to perform at a high level and to continually strive to improve.

120,000 tulips; three public gardens; three special events Tulip Time 2019 is set for April 6-23. More than 100,000 tulips of multiple varieties will blanket Ted Ensley Gardens at Lake Shawnee, Old Prairie Town/Ward-Meade Botanical Garden, and Doran Rock Garden and Gage Park.

Old Prairie Town/Ward-Meade Botanical Garden

Becoming one of Topeka’s favorite special events, Tulips at Twilight features more than 35 lighted displays including larger-than-life illuminated flowers and more than 40,000 multi-colored tulips. Bring a friend and stroll along lighted pathways.

Enjoy live music and historic Old Prairie Town tours on Friday and Saturday evenings. The garden is open Sunday through Thursday for a more tranquil experience. This event is hosted by the Friends of Ward-Meade and Shawnee County Parks and Recreation Foundation.

New this year, Old Prairie Town/Ward-Meade Botanical Garden invites you to Tulips at Twilight Uncorked.

Shawnee County Parks + Recreation plans to make $1.3 million worth of improvements to 18 local parks. Improvements range from new playground equipment and surfaces to park benches, concrete work, lighting and new signage. Some parks that exist as natural areas will be reassessed for purpose and potential.

The SCP+R Master Plan calls for identifying and improving eight to 12 parks per year. This year, additional parks are being improved thanks to the Board of County Commissioners allotting $3 million in excess funding dollars for deferred maintenance in parks and recreation.

Some parks have already been improved or have improvements underway including McKinley Park, Betty Phillips Park, Little Oakland Park, Giles Park, Hillcrest Community Park, Ripley Park, Shunga Glen and Skyline Park.

“There are 110 parks in Shawnee County and many of them have been around for a lot of years without any significant improvements,” says John Knight, SCP+R director. “We have an individual management plan process for parks in which we review each park’s condition and needs and devise an improvement plan accordingly.”

The plans are based on a standardized list of amenities that are appropriate for each park classification, from mini-parks to neighborhood parks to community and regional parks. The demographics of surrounding neighborhoods are considered and public input is taken on park improvements.

FOUR SEASONS OF DORNWOOD

Bring the whole family out to enjoy a guided trail walk through the historic Dornwood Nature Area.

We will continue a seasonal series of hikes through Dornwood this winter and early spring. You will learn about trees, plants, the Calhoun Formation and history of Dornwood Dairy.

On this series of guided walks you’ll hear about the history of Dornwood when it was a working dairy farm and learn to identify common trees, plants and birds in Kansas as you explore the wooded areas.

Wander through fields that are being restored to native prairie, and see the rare cross-section of the Calhoun Formation. Dornwood Park is located at 2500 SE Highland Ave. The walk will commence at the gate leading to the nature trails located at the far east end of the Dornwood parking lot where SE 25th St. dead ends. Dornwood trails are unimproved and feature varied terrain. Hiking shoes are recommended, no flip-flops. Trail walk will cover approximately one mile. Trail conditions will vary depending on weather. Please bring your own water and winter weather attire as needed. There are no restroom facilities available in the Nature Area.

Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Shawnee County Parks + Recreation’s nearly 60 miles of trails offer a leisurely stroll with side ventures into beautiful gardens, or a hike, run or mountain bike ride up hilly terrain leading to panoramic views of the county. There are 30 miles of paved trails and nearly 28 miles of natural surface trails running through forested, prairie and open natural areas. Shawnee County Parks + Recreation is continually increasing the number and length of trails in our community while connecting as many trails as possible.

Shunga Trail – 8.5-mile paved concrete pedestrian/bicycle trail beginning at 29th and McClure and continuing east to SE 2nd. The trail will eventually stretch across Topeka.

Lake Shawnee Trail – 7-mile paved concrete pedestrian/bicycle trail encircling the lake.

Gage Park Fitness Loop Trail – 2-mile paved trail encircling Gage Park.

Deer Creek Trail – 2-mile trail from SE Golden to SE 6th and SE 6th to SE 10th.

Dornwood Nature Trail – 9.9 miles of natural surface, woodland hiking trail accessible from SE 25th and Highland.

Grant-Bradbury – Located west of Forbes Field, 2 miles of natural surface trails run through 80-acres of virgin prairie that has never been plowed. The area includes hundreds of native prairie species, some of which are scarcely found elsewhere in the state.

Landon Trail – 4.75-mile paved and gravel trail along an abandoned railroad track running from SE 15th to SE 45th.

Soldier Creek Trail – 1.8-mile paved concrete bicycle/pedestrian trail from NE Garfield Park to NW Lyman Road.

Azura Trails at Skyline Park – Four single-track loop trails comprising 4.47 miles of natural surface trails through wooded and prairie areas offering the most panoramic views of Shawnee County from the famed Burnett’s Mound.

Orville Rice Nature Trail – 1-mile mowed grass single track trail following Shunga Creek from SW Gage to the Shunga Trail near McDonald Field.

Warren Nature Area – 4 miles of natural surface trails beginning at SW 25th and Gage east of Felker Park. The trail includes a wetland to slow and clean runoff water from streets and neighborhoods. Many birds, mammals and aquatic species can be found here.

Welton Grove Park – 3 miles of natural surface trails.

Shawnee North Nature Trail – 2-mile natural surface trail on undeveloped parkland comprised of grasslands and wooded areas. The first quarter-mile is asphalt paved for accessibility. Shawnee North Community Park also has a .8 mile paved fitness loop trail encircling the west side of the park.

Weekly themes combined with a research-based curriculum ensure that children are having fun while learning and being prepared for kindergarten. Play and positive interaction with teachers and other children support social, emotional and intellectual growth. Special curriculum components encourage nutrition, physical fitness and socio-emotional growth. Our program spans all areas of a child’s development, offering a well-rounded, high-quality learning experience.

Class sizes are small, with a maximum of 12 children per session. We have two classrooms that are located in the Shawnee North Community Center. Parents are our partners and are encouraged to participate in classroom activities.

Parent/teacher conferences are held twice each year where parents help develop their child’s Individual Education Plan. Developmental assessments are conducted twice each year and children who are kindergarten-bound have an additional school readiness assessment. Children must be 3 years old and fully potty trained to participate.

Established in 1963, the 2.5 acre Ward-Meade Botanical Garden contains approximately 500 varieties of trees and shrubs plus annual flowers planted each year.

The garden includes many plants requiring shade as well as many unusual specimen plants.

Ted Ensley Gardens The Ted Ensley Gardens are located on the west side of scenic Lake Shawnee, offering a great panoramic view. They provide a beautiful, 9.5-acre setting with a wealth of design ideas and spectacular plantings.

The Garden’s entrance is at the Trailhead facility located north of West Edge Road and 37th Street. The entrance begins with a beautiful 60-foot covered bridge and continues through to meditation and rock gardens, annual and perennial beds, rose and water gardens, a gazebo, pergola, pagoda, waterfalls, and several ponds. An arboretum with 120 species of trees is just across the street.

An adjoining natural area is under development.
