High Risk Breast Cancer

Simran Elder, MD,

Hematology and Oncology specialist, on high risk breast cancer awareness and treatment

What does it mean to be at high risk for breast cancer?

Individuals may be at a higher risk for breast cancer than the general population if they have certain hereditary genetic abnormalities or a family history of breast, ovarian or other certain cancers.

How has breast cancer detection improved in the last decade?

Imaging technology has improved, with 3D mammograms now being used as a standard, which allows for increased detection particularly in some younger patients or patients with dense breast tissue. Additionally, high risk breast cancer clinics have emerged, with the goal of breast cancer prevention and early detection by comprehensive individualized screening methods. What are the main factors that contribute to breast cancer?

Breast cancer is now the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide. Some patients may be at higher risk due to genetic predisposition, personal history of breast cancer or a history of chest wall radiation therapy. Smoking and excess alcohol use, obesity and certain hormonal factors also increase an individual's risk of breast cancer.

Why is it significant that breast cancer is now the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide?

It shows the importance of prevention and early detection to achieve the best long-term outcomes for patients as possible. What are some ways to reduce the risk of breast cancer?

It is important that patients make their screening mammograms a priority and stay up-todate on their primary care visits for exams. If there is a family history of cancer or if you have the other risk factors listed above, I recommend talking with your health care provider about whether visiting a high risk breast cancer clinic may be appropriate for you. Additionally, trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle through diet and exercise and avoidance of smoking or excess alcohol use can help to reduce the risk of breast cancer.

AdventHealth High Risk Breast Clinic Shawnee Mission provides specialized care for individuals with an increased risk of breast cancer due to family history or specific breast cancer risk factors. To learn more, visit BreastHealthKC.com or call 913-632-9100.

Art Therapy: Drawing on the Healing Power of Art

Art therapy is a specialized mental health discipline that uses creativity to help resolve psychological conflicts. The goal is to help people find new ways to gain personal insights and new coping skills by exploring self-expression.

“Using art as a tool for enhanced expression gives one the feeling of empowerment. Especially at a time where one feels lack of power, art becomes an effective way to go beyond our perceived limitations. When one feels helpless, creativity gives us control.” – Noel Kearns, ATR-BC (Art Therapist)

Working with art therapists has proven to be an effective mental health treatment for people living with depression, trauma, medical illness and social difficulties.

ART THERAPY BENEFITS MENTAL HEALTH

The benefits that art therapy can bring to a person’s mental health include:

3 Improving self-esteem 3 Facilitating self-expression 3 Boosting self-confidence 3 Lowering anxiety 3 Increasing self-control 3 Providing a cathartic release of emotion 3 Increasing insight and self-understanding 3 Helping to bypass cognitive defenses and quickly assessing emotion

ART THERAPY HELPS WITH STRESS AND DEPRESSION

Creating art carries many of the same benefits of meditation. Being completely focused on creating art helps alleviate stress and quiets anxious thoughts in our minds. Making art that represents emotions can help us process things we are feeling.

ART THERAPY IS EASY TO ACCESS

You don’t need specialized training to participate in art therapy exercises. And you don’t need to be diagnosed with a psychological disorder to benefit from these exercises. All you need is a willingness to experiment with different materials and explore your emotions.

ART THERAPY IS MUCH MORE THAN COLORING

In order to be truly considered art therapy, art exercises must be guided by an art therapist – who is trained to help patients understand how their creative expression reveals their thoughts and feelings. Art therapists are also trained to facilitate the right creative exercises that best align with a patient’s interests, mood, abilities, etc.
