Individuals may be at a higher risk for breast cancer than the general population if they have certain hereditary genetic abnormalities or a family history of breast, ovarian or other certain cancers.
Breast cancer is now the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide. Some patients may be at higher risk due to genetic predisposition, personal history of breast cancer or a history of chest wall radiation therapy. Smoking and excess alcohol use, obesity and certain hormonal factors also increase an individual's risk of breast cancer.
It is important that patients make their screening mammograms a priority and stay up-todate on their primary care visits for exams. If there is a family history of cancer or if you have the other risk factors listed above, I recommend talking with your health care provider about whether visiting a high risk breast cancer clinic may be appropriate for you. Additionally, trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle through diet and exercise and avoidance of smoking or excess alcohol use can help to reduce the risk of breast cancer.
How has breast cancer detection improved in the last decade? Imaging technology has improved, with 3D mammograms now being used as a standard, which allows for increased detection particularly in some younger patients or patients with dense breast tissue. Additionally, high risk breast cancer clinics have emerged, with the goal of breast cancer prevention and early detection by comprehensive individualized screening methods.
