Pour Your Heart Into Your Workouts What’s the best way to tell if you’re having a good workout? Fighting hard to catch your breath? Dripping with perspiration? Just plain exhaustion? Maybe. But one of the most reliable indicators is your heart rate. The harder you exercise, the closer you get to your maximum heart rate (MHR), which is roughly 220 minus your age. For example, a 40-year-old woman has a max heart rate of 180 beats per minute. According to the American Heart Association, there are many long-term health benefits associated with regular exercise that elevates the heart rate, including improved circulation, lower blood pressure, lower levels of ‘bad’ cholesterol and a reduced risk of heart disease and stroke. Tracking your heart rate zones can help you get the most out of your physical activity — helping you make sure you're not pushing too hard or too little. For maximum benefit, your exercise intensity should be at a moderate or higher level. If you’re exercising to lose weight, the more intense or longer your activity, the more calories you burn. Keep in mind, balance is still important. Overdoing it can increase your risk of soreness, injury and burnout. Before beginning a new exercise program, you may want to talk with your doctor. Eat Your Way to Better Heart Health
K
eeping your heart healthy is about more than avoiding overlyprocessed foods and fast food options. You can also pump up your heart’s health by choosing foods that actually help. In fact, what you eat can influence your heart health from blood pressure and inflammation to cholesterol levels and triglycerides. Two of the most high-value, easily-available foods you can eat to maximize your heart health are leafy green vegetables and avocados. Leafy green vegetables like spinach, kale and collard greens are well known for the wealth of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They’re high in vitamin K and nitrates, which can help reduce blood pressure and improve arterial function. And studies show that a higher intake of leafy greens is associated with a lower risk of heart disease. Avocados are another heart-healthy food option. They’re rich in potassium, a nutrient that’s essential
to heart health. In fact, just one avocado supplies nearly one-third of your daily potassium requirements. There are many other important — and delicious — heart-healthy foods, including: 3 Whole grains 3 Berries 3 Fatty fish (like salmon) and fish oil 3 Walnuts 3 Beans 3 Dark chocolate 3 Tomatoes 3 Almonds 3 Seeds 3 Beets 3 Garlic 3 Olive Oil 3 Edamame 3 Green Tea The bottom line is there’s a direct connection between diet and heart disease. And including hearthealthy foods as part of a nutritious, well-balanced diet can help minimize your risk of heart disease.

Fact: Women are more vulnerable to heart disease than men In fact, heart disease in women is more deadly than all forms of cancer — combined. Yet only one in five women believes that heart disease is her greatest health threat. That’s why the American Heart Association established its signature women’s initiative, Go Red for Women — to encourage awareness of the issue along with action to save more lives. The movement harnesses the energy, passion and power women have to band together and collectively wipe out heart disease. AdventHealth is a proud sponsor of the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women movement in Kansas City. For more information, visit GoRedForWomen.org.
On National Wear Red Day, team members at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission and AdventHealth South Overland Park decked out in their red to show support and raise awareness of cardiovascular disease. Throughout Heart Month, and every month, we focus on preventive measures that our community can take to prevent cardiac events and take charge of their heart health. 6 | AdventHealth | SPRING 2022
Living a HeartHealthy Lifestyle
H
eart health should concern everyone. After all, heart disease is a leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. Fortunately, a healthy heart is often within your control.
An ounce of prevention is still worth at least a pound of cure There’s a lot you can do to lower your risk of developing heart disease and improve your overall health.
Understand your risks Anyone can get heart disease, but you’re at higher risk if you: 3 Have high cholesterol, high blood pressure or diabetes 3 Smoke 3 Are overweight or have obesity 3 Don’t get enough physical activity 3 Don’t eat a healthy diet Your age and family history also affect your risk for heart disease. Your risk is higher if: 3 You’re a woman over age 55 3 You’re a man over age 45 3 Your father or brother had heart disease before age 55 3 Your mother or sister had heart disease before age 65
Get your blood pressure and cholesterol checked Starting at age 18, get your blood pressure checked regularly. High blood pressure often has no signs or symptoms. Get your cholesterol checked at least every five years. Some people will need to get it checked more or less often. If your cholesterol or blood pressure numbers are high, you can take steps to lower them.
Choose heart-healthy foods A heart-healthy diet includes foods that are low in saturated fat, added sugars, and sodium (salt). Hearthealthy items include high-fiber foods (whole grains, fruits and vegetables) and certain fats (like the fats in olive oil and fish).
Aim for a healthy weight People who are overweight or have obesity are at an increased risk for heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. If you’re overweight or have obesity, losing 5 to 10 percent of your body weight can help lower your risk of heart disease.
Manage stress Reducing stress can help prevent serious health problems like heart disease, depression and high blood pressure. Deep breathing and meditation are good ways to relax and manage stress.
Get regular physical activity Adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. This includes anything that gets your heart beating faster — like walking, dancing and biking. If you’re just getting started, take it slow! Even five minutes has real health benefits.
Quit smoking Quitting smoking helps lower your risk of heart disease and heart attack. AdventHealth Shawnee Mission offers the Freedom From Smoking® program. This seven week, eight-session group program,
developed by the American Lung Association, is one of the most successful quit programs available. For more information or to register, visit AdventHealthKC. com/Events or call AdventHealth Class Registration at 913-676-7777, option 1. Avoiding secondhand smoke is important, too — so keep your home smoke-free. If guests smoke, ask them to smoke outside.
Get enough sleep Good-quality sleep decreases the work of your heart, as blood pressure and heart rate go down. Heart rates usually stay elevated in people who are sleep-deprived. You can work on your heart health 365 days a year. Even if you’re at high risk due to family history or other factors, you can lower your risk by making healthy lifestyle choices.
Identify your risk of a heart attack or stroke: Complete an online, seven-minute assessment for heart disease and stroke. Based on your risk assessment, you can schedule any of the following more comprehensive screenings. 3 Preventative Cardiac Screening ($35) 3 Calcium Scoring Package ($50) 3 Peripheral Vascular Package ($79) Receive all three of the above screening packages for $99. To learn more or get started, visit adventhealthkc.com/heart.

New Hope for Heart Disease Patients The Latest Treatments for America’s Number One Health Problem
T
echnology is advancing rapidly, across almost every industry. And one of the biggest examples is in health care. In fact, thanks to advances in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of common cardiovascular conditions, deaths caused by heart disease have declined by 50 percent over the past 35 years. Still, nearly half of today’s American adults are affected by coronary artery disease (a buildup of plaque in the arteries that feed the heart). And with America’s aging population, the demand for innovations in heart disease diagnosis, management and treatment are greater than ever. 8 | AdventHealth | SPRING 2022
“Cardiology is such an exciting field in medicine because it continues to evolve as our understanding of heart and vascular disease expands. There have been many innovations and advancements in a variety of different areas in cardiology, but especially in understanding and managing coronary artery disease,” said Ammar Habib, MD, FACC, FSCAI, Interventional Cardiology, AdventHealth Medical Group. Of course, one key to avoiding heart failure is to get diagnosed and start treatment early. And today’s cardiologists have a wealth of diagnostic tools. “We now have tools that allow us to visualize the interior of a blood vessel using sound wave technology called intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) or light technology called optical coherence tomography (OCT). This often allows us to understand the plaque burden and other important characteristics of a blockage at the microscopic level,” said Habib. When someone is diagnosed with narrowing arteries, small, mesh tubes called “stents” are often used to keep the heart supplied with oxygen-rich blood. In the more than three decades since stents were invented, significant improvements have been made. “We now have stents that are coated with an antiinflammatory drug that has been shown to provide significantly improved outcomes when compared to older, bare metal stents. The medication is slowly released to help prevent future plaque buildup and re-narrowing of the blood vessel,” said Habib.
Minimally invasive procedures and more Now, in many cases for patients with serious coronary disease, cardiologists are able to repair the heart without needing to perform open-chest procedures that cut through the breastbone and leave a long incision scar. For example, for aortic valve replacement patients who are at risk of complications from open-heart surgery, there’s a newer minimally invasive procedure called Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). “TAVR allows for implantation of a prosthetic valve without the need for a large chest incision or open-heart operation. Instead, special catheters and x-ray imaging are used to allow a prosthetic valve to be placed using your
vessels without needing surgery,” said Habib. Additionally, TAVR involves no significant wounds to recover from, and patients usually notice significant symptom improvement immediately.
Prevention is still the best medicine It’s important to focus on treatments and management strategies for heart disease. But it may be even more important to understand how to prevent it. While there are many risk factors that we can’t change – like our age, gender and family history, there are plenty of ways to reduce the risk of heart disease. In fact, with proper treatment and lifestyle changes, it is possible to avoid serious complications and slow the progression of coronary artery disease. “It is important to screen for high-density lipoprotein (HDL cholesterol), low-density lipoprotein (LDL cholesterol), high blood pressure and diabetes, and make sure these risk factors are managed with the help of your physician. It’s important to stop smoking and limit alcohol use. Obesity is also an important risk factor, and strategies to lose weight need to be considered. Finally, it is important to get a good quality of sleep, manage stress and get regular health screenings,” said Habib. AdventHealth offers HEARTaware, a free, online heart disease risk assessment designed to help you identify your risk factors for developing heart disease. To complete a quick and free heart risk assessment, visit AdventHealthKC.com/Heart. At the end of the free assessment, you can download a summary of your results and share them with your primary care physician, if you choose.

He earned his medical degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and completed his internal medicine residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He then completed a fellowship in cardiovascular diseases at the University of Kansas Medical Center and a fellowship in interventional cardiology at Brown University in Providence, RI. Ask-A-Doctor
Andrew Waters, MD, FACC, RPVI, Board-Certified Cardiologist, On Recognizing and Dealing With Hypertension
How widespread is hypertension (high blood pressure) across the country? According to data from a recent National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the prevalence of ageadjusted hypertension was approximately 45 percent among adults, but it increased with age. In patient’s 40 to 59, the prevalence was 54 percent and in patients 60 and over, the prevalence was 74 percent.
Why is it dangerous to have high blood pressure? Untreated hypertension can lead to higher rates of coronary disease, stroke, heart failure, chronic kidney disease and vision loss. Unfortunately, hypertension often has no symptoms, and without routine monitoring, patients can be hypertensive

for many years without knowing it.
What are the major factors that can cause high blood pressure? Factors that increase the risk of hypertension include non-modifiable risk factors such as age, but also factors such as sedentary lifestyle, obesity and in some cases, it can be associated with sodium intake in the diet — since some patients with hypertension are particularly salt sensitive.
What are the biggest lifestyle changes that can help lower blood pressure? Dietary salt restriction has been found to be helpful, especially for patients with coexisting diabetes and chronic kidney disease. In patients who are obese, weight loss has been shown to help with hypertension.
Different forms of exercise (aerobic, dynamic resistance and isometric resistance) have all been shown to help lower blood pressure.
What are some good foods for lowering blood pressure? Generally, limiting sodium intake and foods rich in potassium will help with the treatment of hypertension. The best-known diet to help with hypertension is the DASH diet, which tends to be high in fruits, vegetables, poultry, fish and nuts and low in sweets, sugar sweetened beverages and red meats. Regular visits with your doctor are key to controlling your blood pressure. To find the right primary care doctor for you, visit MyHealthKC.com.

The Facts
Good Heart Health Can Mean Good Brain Health Your heart pumps blood through vessels to every part of your body, including your brain. Anything that damages your blood vessels or impairs blood flow — including coronary heart disease — puts your brain at risk for serious problems — including a stroke, sometimes called a “brain attack,” which happens when a clot or plaque blocks a blood vessel in the brain or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. Understanding and managing your blood pressure can help keep your brain healthy and your mind sharp for as long as possible.
At AdventHealth, we offer HEARTaware, a free, online heart disease risk assessment designed to help you identify your risk factors for developing heart disease. To complete a quick and free heart risk assessment, visit AdventHealthKC.com/Heart. At the end of the free assessment, you can download a summary of your results and share them with your primary care physician, if you choose.

There are five blood pressure ranges recognized by the American Heart Association: Normal: Less than 120/80 systolic (the pressure when your heart pushes blood out) and diastolic (the pressure when your heart rests between beats). You should stick with heart-healthy habits like following a balanced diet and getting regular exercise. Elevated: From 120 to 129 systolic and less than 80 diastolic. You are likely to develop high blood pressure unless steps are taken to control the condition. Hypertension Stage 1: From 130 to 139 systolic or 80 to 89 diastolic. Your doctor is likely to prescribe lifestyle changes and may consider adding blood pressure medication. Hypertension Stage 2: At 140/90 or higher. Your doctor is likely to prescribe a combination of blood pressure medications and lifestyle changes. Hypertensive Crisis: Requires medical attention. If your readings suddenly exceed 180/120, wait five minutes and then test your blood pressure again. If your readings are still unusually high, contact your doctor immediately. You could be experiencing a hypertensive crisis.
