Looking for the Key to Better Health? Take a Seat
S
itting in a chair all day can cause a lot of health problems – from back pain to neck stiffness , tight hips or even chronic lumbar pain. But as it turns out, that same chair may hold the key to easing those pains. In fact, you can use your office chair to get a full-body workout. Here are just a few of the best office exercises to keep you healthy, support good posture and make you feel better. Arm Circles Sit nice and tall in a chair, with arms stretched out at your sides in a “T” position. Reaching through your fingertips, keeping your arms straight, begin to make small circles rotating from your shoulder joint. Repeat for 30 seconds, then reverse directions. Chair Plank (using a chair without wheels) Face the chair and place your forearms on it. Extend your legs to create a straight line with your body. Keep your toes on the floor. Tighten your abdomen and try to hold the position for 45 to 60 seconds. Your body should maintain a straight line all the time. Chair Squat (using a chair without wheels) Stand just in front of your chair, facing away from it. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart, with toes pointing straight ahead. Engage your core as you bend your knees and lower your hips down and back. You can lift your arms out in front for extra balance while you lower yourself down. Gently tap the chair with your bottom, but don’t sit down. Squeeze your glutes and hamstrings to drive your hips forward and up, returning to the starting position. Try doing three sets of 10 reps. Lung Cancer Screenings — Because Early Detection Saves Lives Lung cancer screening with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) is an effective and recommended test that has been shown to be the only effective method to detect lung cancer early in high-risk adults, when treatment is much more effective. In adults at high risk for lung cancer due to their smoking history, lung cancer screening with LDCT can save lives, but only if they get tested. Talk to your doctor about lung cancer screening if you currently smoke, or have quit in the last 15 years, are between 55 and 77 years old and have a 30-year pack-year history. The Meaning of Screenings I
t all adds up. Preventive care is a critical part of your overall health and well-being. After all, preventing certain illnesses and diseases can help you maintain a higher level of health and avoid the side effects and problems that come with preventable health conditions. And regular screenings are a critical part of preventive care. “Health screenings are vital to preventative medicine because it helps providers identify potential lifestyle changes that may be imperative to prevent disease and even identify disease before it becomes a more serious illness,” said Anna Nicek, MD, Internal Medicine, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. By undergoing regular health screening, you can find out whether you might have any health conditions before you experience symptoms. An important element of preventive care includes getting sufficient information to help make informed decisions. This way, you’ll be able to get any necessary treatment as early as possible. “During a preventative exam, we review your current and past medical histories, medications, discuss your diet and exercise regimen, and perform a complete review of systems and physical exam. On a more practical level, I think that a provider should be able to go beyond screening tests 6 | AdventHealth | FALL 2021
What are health screenings? 3 Cancer (Breast and cervical in women, prostate in men, colorectal and skin in men and women) 3 Diabetes 3 High cholesterol 3 High blood pressure 3 Osteoporosis 3 Obesity
and immunizations and discuss ways to achieve a patient’s personal wellness goals that work within their daily life,” said Nicek. Another year, another check-up. Thanks to regular health screenings, you can feel confident that your health is good, and you can continue participating in your favorite activities. If you visit the doctor regularly, you probably have certain screenings performed regularly. For example, when you get on the scale, your doctor is checking to determine whether you are at a healthy weight. Because your weight can be a risk factor for other health conditions, getting on the scale at a doctor’s visit is considered a health screening. “Your blood pressure, waist measurement, and BMI often tell quite a bit about a patient’s health. Higher measurements of any of these put you at increased risk of high blood pressure,
diabetes, cardiovascular disease (stroke and heart attack) and fatty liver injury,” said Nicek.
function). Immunizations are also reviewed and administered as needed,” said Nicek.
What health screenings are recommended just for you?
Your emotional health is just as important as your physical health
Your doctor will recommend health screenings based on key factors such as age, family, history, risk factors, and sex — this will include which screenings are recommended based on your medical history and your overall health. “Depending on your age, gender, medical issues including exposures and lifestyle, we may obtain lab work like a complete blood count, cholesterol panel, A1C (a value that tells us your average blood sugar over the past 3 months), and complete metabolic panel (electrolytes and kidney
“At AdventHealth, we always ask our patients three questions: Do you have someone who loves and cares for you? Do you have a source of joy in your life? Do you have a sense of peace today? I think those are three, very important questions to get a sense of your emotional health,” said Nicek. At AdventHealth, we know it’s important to have a doctor, but we want to help you find the right doctor. Visit MyHealthKC.com, answer a few, quick questions, and we’ll connect you with a primary care physician who best matches your health and wellness needs.

AdventHealth South Overland Park Hospital Is Now Open T
he best health care focuses on your whole health — body, mind and spirit. The just-opened AdventHealth South Overland Park is already providing the same quality of care you have come to know and expect. “It’s rare to have the opportunity to open a brand-new hospital. In fact, this is the first in the Kansas City area in the last 15 years. We couldn’t be more excited to serve our patients in this beautiful new building that matches our high-quality care,” said Alan Verrill, MD, chief executive officer for AdventHealth South Overland Park. Located at 165th and Antioch in
the BluHawk Development, this 193,000 square-foot inpatient hospital is designed to provide patients with easy access to a full suite of medical and emergency services. “Our patients have demonstrated a clear need for expanded services in southern Johnson County and surrounding communities, and we are thrilled to provide these with our whole-person care approach,” said Verrill. The new facility complements already existing emergency, imaging and laboratory services onsite that have served thousands of patients since opening in 2017.
The new hospital offers expanded services including colonoscopies and other GI procedures, cardiac cath lab procedures and orthopedic surgeries. “Our new full-service community hospital features an Emergency Room, Surgical Services, Obstetrics, full-service Radiology along with Cardiac Services,” said Monica Powers, chief nursing officer for AdventHealth South Overland Park. With this expansion, AdventHealth South Overland Park now joins its sister campus at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission in offering a birth center and bringing maternity care services, including a level II NICU, closer to home for families in south Johnson County and surrounding communities. Of course, AdventHealth nurses are the foundation of our mission in the delivery of whole person care — mind, body and spirit. They are experts in the science of healthcare, innovators in constant pursuit of exceptional outcomes and advocates of loving compassionate care to all they serve. “The nursing team at AdventHealth South

Dr. Verrill joined Littleton Adventist Hospital from Bridgton Hospital in Maine, where he served as division chief for the medical group and president over the medical staff.
No matter what brings you to us or which medical services you need, we’re all connected by more than just our name. We’re connected by our commitment to your whole-person health. Overland Park brings the excellent patient experience and high-quality care that AdventHealth is known for,” said Powers. “Our facilities and our staff provide so much more than medicine by caring for our patients’ body, mind and spirit and we are proud to have the opportunity to deliver this care in a beautiful, high-quality facility,” said Verrill. Every thoughtful detail reflects our mission. This new hospital is filled with thoughtful and powerful features that reinforce the AdventHealth mission of Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ. As guests enter the main lobby floor, they’re welcomed with words of hope and healing displayed on the glass of the second floor. A Creation Art Walk was also designed for people to enjoy artwork representing each of the days of God’s creation. There is seating in each location that allows one to enjoy the art or explore one’s faith. And the chapel was designed with glass panels in the front to showcase the final day of creation, with a landscape of the sunset portraying the day of rest with a cross in the center. Depending on the time of the day and light brilliance, the piece shows varying colors and hues. “This new location allows us to extend our healing mission to south Johnson County and surrounding areas — caring for the body, mind and spirit. We’re about meeting people where they are in their health journey and finding ways to best serve their needs to provide a better health care experience,” said Verrill. Ask-A-Doctor
Megan Schlick, ND,
Naturopathic Medicine On Supporting Your Immune Function Naturally Why is the body’s immune system so important? Our immune system is our body’s army against outside invaders (bacteria or virus).
What are some ways to lower the chances of frequent illness? Address increasing belly fat. Talk with your practitioner about how to target and decrease. Often, insulin resistance is the underlying issue. It is treatable and will involve diet changes, but patients are often unaware of what steps to take toward this goal. 3Hydrate adequately, especially in the dry winter season. Having hydrated healthy cells, especially along the respiratory tract, can make it more difficult for outside invaders to enter your body. 3Support your “gut health.” Eating a diet high in fiber is one of 10 | AdventHealth | FALL 2021
the best ways to support the immune cells that reside along the lining of our GI tract.
What are some positive lifestyle changes to help the immune system? Restorative sleep is vital – both quality and quantity. Do you feel rested in the morning? If not, troubleshoot this with your trusted practitioner. Regular movement is also key. When people are sedentary, they are more immunocompromised. Find ways to include less sitting and more movement during the day.
How can stress negatively affect the immune system? Stress hormones can suppress the effectiveness of the immune system. If you have been under high stress for more than three months, I’d encourage you to seek out stress management strategies that work for you.
What supplements could be beneficial during cold and flu season? Start by getting your vitamin D levels checked. Those with vitamin D deficiency are more likely to be infected with cold or flu virus. Take a multivitamin/ multimineral to help cover your bases if your diet is lacking. Nutrients such as vitamin C, A, E and zinc might assist in optimal immune function. Please note, improving your diet is a better way to tackle this.
Take the first step on your journey to better health. Call us today at 913-632-3550 to schedule an appointment. We’re here to help you gain control of your health and uncover new opportunities and methods that will strengthen your body, ease your mind and lift your spirit.

The Facts
The Good, The Bad, The Antibiotics Since the discovery of penicillin nearly a century ago, antibiotics have saved or improved millions of human lives. It’s not just good, it’s miraculous. But now a new challenge has emerged — overuse or misuse of antibiotics. It can be unhealthy and downright dangerous.
The Good
Antibiotics are effective against: 3 Bacterial infections (like strep throat) 3 Some parasites (like intestinal worms) 3 Some fungal infections (like bronchitis).
Sir Alexander Fleming 3 discovered the world's first broadly effective antibiotic substance in 1928, which he named penicillin.
The Bad
Antibiotics can cause new health problems: 3 As much as 50 percent of prescribed antibiotics are unnecessary, according to the CDC. 3 The most dangerous side effect of antibiotics: development of antibioticresistant bacteria. 3 Antibiotic-resistant bacteria sicken more than 2 million Americans annually.
Use Antibiotics the Right Way Statistics show that at least 30 percent of antibiotics prescribed in doctors’ offices, emergency departments and clinics are unnecessary. Here are some ways you can help stop antibiotic misuse: 3 Wash your hands often with warm, soapy water to help prevent infections. 3 Take antibiotics exactly how they are prescribed. Don’t miss doses, and complete the entire cycle, even if you start feeling better.
3 Don’t share antibiotics or take someone else’s antibiotics. Taking the wrong antibiotic may keep you sick longer or allow bad bacteria to grow. 3 Don’t save antibiotics for the next illness or take leftover antibiotics. Discard any leftover antibiotics once the course has ended.
