Announces January COOP Showcase Lineup
Oklahoma musicians – Samantha Crain, John Calvin Abney and Kierston White – will Perform on January 17 OKLAHOMA CITY (1/2/2019) – Tower Theatre teams up again with COOP Ale Works to host a monthly concert series supporting Oklahoma City’s music scene. January's COOP Showcase features performances by critically-acclaimed, local artists Samantha Crain, John Calvin Abney and Kierston White on Thurs., Jan. 17 at Tower Theatre in Oklahoma City. Local embroidery artist, Sam Smith, will display her artwork in the Tower lobby. Tickets are on sale now. Samantha Crain is a Choctaw singer, songwriter, poet, producer and musician from Oklahoma. She is a two-time, Native American GRAMMY Award winner and her discography has been critically-acclaimed by media outlets such as Rolling Stone, SPIN, Paste, No Depression, NPR, PRI, The Guardian, NME, Uncut and others. She has toured extensively other the past 11 years nationally and internationally, presenting rollicking, folk-rock shows with a band and intimate, folk-leaning solo performances. Crain has toured with The Avett Brothers, Langhorne Slim, First Aid Kit, Neutral Milk Hotel, Murder By Death, The Mountain Goats, Brandi Carlile and many other bands and artists. For the past decade, John Calvin Abney has made a name for himself as a solo artist and sought-after sideman. He’s toured as lead guitarist for fellow Oklahoman John Moreland, recording with him on his last two acclaimed albums, and in between, the prolific Abney found time to add another impressive record to his own catalog (2016’s “Far Cries And Close Calls”), supporting the release with a run of solo shows during a whirlwind year filled with as much struggle as success. Kierston White is a singer, guitarist and songwriter from Shawnee, OK who performs solo and with trio The Tequila Songbirds (Camille Harp, Elizabee). She is part of a new generation of Oklahoma songwriters giving fresh legitimacy to the craft. The occasional heavy vibrato of her voice quivers with the sensibility of a broken heart breaking forward through the fog and mist of lost love and new freedom. White released her first and only album in 2014 and looks forward to a new record in 2019. Local visual artist, Sam Smith, is currently a vendor at DNA Galleries in the Plaza District, where she sells various quirky embroidery pieces. She also creates and sells personalized commissioned embroidery work and is the host of the podcast Odd Artist. Her work can be found scattered throughout various homes and businesses in the Oklahoma City area. The COOP Showcase is Thurs., Jan. 17 at Tower Theatre in Oklahoma City. ECU to Present “Dragons Love Tacos and Other Stories” on January 17th
East Central University, in conjunction with Theatre Works USA, will present “Dragons Love Tacos and Other Stories” on Thursday, Jan. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Ataloa Theatre of ECU’s Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center. “Dragons Love Tacos and Other Stories” is a musical revue of beloved contemporary children’s books, geared toward those in grades kindergarten through the fifth grade. The revue will center around such books as Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin and illustrated by Daniel Salmieri; Interrupting Chicken by David Ezra Stein; The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds; Mercy Watson Goes for a Ride by Kate DiCamillo and illustrated by Chris Van Dusen and Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa School Days by Erica Silverman and painted by Betsy Lewin. The show makes curriculum connections with communications and language arts. Literature and music along with relationships and family. Themes include: likes and dislikes, friendship, family, getting along, perseverance and dreaming big. Tickets are $5 for children and $10 for adults. A matinee is available for schools by contacting the box office. First Round Barn Rendezvous of the year set for January 13 The Arcadia Round Barn will kick off the 2019 season of its Round Barn Rendezvous jam sessions on Jan. 13. Acoustic musicians will play and sing in the loft of the barn from noon to 4:30 p.m. Hot drinks and cookies will be provided. Admission is free to the Arcadia Round Barn but donations are accepted.
