OPENING This Weekend

in Shawnee! "SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE"

(3D and 2D): Miles Morales comes across the long-dead Peter Parker. This Peter Parker is not from his world though; he's from somewhere else in the multiverse. With Parker's guidance, Miles will become Spider-Man: and through that he will become part of the ever-expanding 'Spider-Verse' The animated action adventure features voices of Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld (Rated PG for frenetic sequences of animated action violence, thematic elements, and mild language). (1:57). OPENS FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14 AT THE CINEMA CENTRE 8 AND MOVIES SIX AT SHAWNEE MALL.

"ONCE UPON A DEADPOOL" A re-edited,

holiday-themed version of “Deadpool 2”, called “Once Upon a Deadpool” is coming to theaters, featuring a PG13 version of the film released from December 12 through Christmas Eve in the U.S. The new version will feature added interstitial scenes where Ryan Reynolds' antihero appears with actor Fred Savage -- all of which were apparently filmed in one day for this release. Savage will appear in eight scenes in which Deadpool will read a bedtime story to the former child actor, a concept comically recycled from his youthful appearance in 1987's "The Princess Bride". The re-release isn't a complete cash grab. Reynolds has said that $1 from every ticket is going to a Cancer charity. (Rated PG-13), (1:58) NOW SHOWING AT MOVIES SIX AT SHAWNEE MALL.

"THE MULE"

A 90-year-old horticulturist and WWII veteran is caught transporting $3 million worth of cocaine through Michigan for a Mexican drug cartel. "MORTAL ENGINES"

A mysterious young woman, Hester Shaw, emerges as the only one who can stop a giant, predator city on wheels devouring everything in its path. Feral, and fiercely driven by the memory of her mother, Hester joins forces with Tom Natsworthy, an outcast from London, along with Anna Fang, a dangerous outlaw with a bounty on her head. Peter Jackson directs the action adventure fantasy. (Rated PG-13 for sequences of futuristic violence and action), (2:08) OPENS FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14 AT MOVIES SIX AT SHAWNEE MALL.

"HALLOWEEN 2018"

Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode confronts her long-time foe Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago. Celebrate safely this New Year’s Eve New Year’s Eve is a time to celebrate. But for hundreds of people each year, the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day proves fatal. According to fatality data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over the last five years an average of 300 people died in drunk driving fatalities between Christmas and New Year’s Day. Holiday celebrations, and New Year’s Eve festivities in particular, tend to include alcohol, raising the stakes during this festive yet too often fatal time of year. The sobering statistics provided by the NHTSA don’t have to prevent people from toasting a new year. In fact, there are many ways to have fun this New Year’s Eve without putting yourself in harm’s way. • Don’t overindulge in alcohol. For many people, overindulging in alcohol is part and parcel during New Year’s Eve celebrations. Such behavior puts everyone at risk, even people who don’t drive. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism,

conservative estimates suggest that roughly one-half of sexual assaults on American women involve alcohol consumption by the perpetrator, victim or both. While alcohol and its relationship to traffic fatalities draw the bulk of the attention on New Year’s Eve, even people who don’t intend to drive should recognize the dangers of overindulging in alcohol and drink responsibly. • Arrange for transportation. If you need a car to get around on New Year’s Eve and plan to drink alcohol, arrange for someone else to do your driving for you. Groups of friends should choose someone to be their designated driver or pool their money and hire a taxi or bus service for the night so no one who’s been drinking gets behind the wheel. The NHTSA even offers a free app called SaferRide that is compatible with Apple and Android devices and enables users to call a taxi or a friend to be picked up. • Host responsibly. Even people who don’t intend to leave their homes can take steps to make New Year’s Eve safer for everyone.

If you’re hosting a party at home, do so responsibly, making sure none of your guests overindulge and making the party less about drinking and more about having fun. Shift the focus from toasting drinks to games and activities that don’t include alcohol. Make sure to have plenty of food and nonalcoholic beverages on hand and encourage people who are drinking to eat full meals and drink water throughout the night. People who fill up on food and water during the party may feel full, which may discourage them from having extra drinks. While many people will expect to drink alcohol on New Year’s Eve, don’t stock up on too much alcohol, the availability of which may encourage guests to overindulge. Hosts also should keep the phone numbers of local taxi services handy just in case some guests cannot drive themselves home safely. New Year’s Eve should be as festive as possible. Celebrating responsibly can ensure everyone has a fun and safe time. TF18C552

Give holiday meals a flavorful twist The holiday season is rife with tradition. Family and friends often gather together around the dining room table to share conversation, memories and good food, making the holidays a special time of year. Home chefs looking to expand their culinary horizons can include this recipe for “Slow Cooker Spiced-Cranberry Pork,” courtesy of The Ohio Pork Council, on their holiday menus. Pork is a versatile protein that pairs well with the tart, holiday-centric flavor of cranberries.

Slow Cooker Spiced-Cranberry Pork 31⁄2 1 2⁄3 3⁄4 2 11⁄2 1

Serves 8

to 4 pound pork shoulder 6-oz can jellied cranberry sauce cup sugar cup cranberry juice tablespoons Dijon-style mustard teaspoons ground cloves teaspoon ground black pepper Salt to taste

Trim fat from pork roast, if necessary. Place roast in 4- to 6-quart slow cooker. Use wire whisk to stir together cranberry sauce and sugar in medium bowl. Stir in juice, mustard, cloves and pepper until well combined. Pour cranberry mixture over roast in slow cooker. Cover slow cooker and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours or until pork roast is tender. Turn to slow cookers for easy meals

Busy families who do not have the time to spend an hour or more in the kitchen preparing weeknight dinners can turn to slow cookers to do the work for them. Slow cookers cook foods on a low temperature over several hours. Slow cookers do not require constant attention, making them ideal for people who want to prep meals before leaving the house and then return to a hot meal in the evening. Many foods, from breakfasts to appetizers to desserts, can be prepared with slow cookers. But slow cookers are perhaps best suited for hearty meals, such as this recipe for “Creamy Ham ‘n’ Broccoli” from “Casseroles, Slow Cooker & Soups” (RDA Enthusiast Brands) by Taste of Home editors.

Creamy Ham ‘n’ Broccoli 3 1 1 1 1 11⁄4 1 1 1 1⁄8 1⁄2

Serves 6-8

cups cubed, fully cooked ham 10-ounce package frozen chopped broccoli, thawed can condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted jar processed cheese sauce can sliced water chestnuts, drained cups uncooked instant rice cup milk celery rib, chopped medium onion, chopped to 1⁄4 teaspoon pepper teaspoon paprika

In a 3-quart slow cooker, combine the first 10 ingredients. Cover and cook on high for 2 to 3 hours, or until the rice is tender. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Sprinkle with paprika.

ONGOING: DAILY KEEPER CONNECTIONS

With the Oklahoma City Zoo’s Daily Keeper Connections, get to know our animal family and the people dedicated to caring for them. This free program will allow you to meet our caretakers and learn more about your favorite animals. The Zoo’s caretakers are everyday conservationists, dedicated to protecting and preserving our planet’s wildlife and wild places. They have a wealth of information to share about the Zoo’s amazing animals. Keeper Connection signs are posted throughout the Zoo. Schedules are available on the zoo map and online at www.okczoo.org. Zoo admission required. Go wild at the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden! Located at the crossroads of I-44 and I-35, the Oklahoma City Zoo is a proud member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the American Alliance of Museums, Oklahoma City’s Adventure District and an Adventure Road partner. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Regular admission is $11 for adults and $8 for children ages 3-11 and seniors ages 65 and over. Children two and under are admitted free.
