Lyric to Stage Curious George: The Golden Meatball Everyone’s favorite mischievous monkey is coming to Lyric Theatre in January. The company’s third foray into Theatre for Young Audiences, Lyric will present Curious George: The Golden Meatball, opening January 23 and continuing through February 17 at the Plaza Theatre, 1725 NW 16 St. The four-week run features all daytime performances. “I'm so excited to bring Curious George to life at Lyric Theatre,” said Director Matthew Sipress. “It's a thrill to be able to take characters from the Curious George books and cartoons, like The Man in the Yellow Hat, Chef Pisghetti and Netti, and introduce them to kids in a whole new way, with live actors, music and dance. And, just like the books and cartoons, George will get into plenty of predicaments, but will always come out on top.” The adventure-filled family musical follows George through an exciting journey where he learns more about Rome and meatballs
and the secret ingredient to cooking. Based on the books by Margret and H.A. Rey and the play owned by Universal Stage Productions, it features music by John Kavanaugh with book and lyrics by Jeremy Desmon. The production’s music director is Mary Brozina Wierick, and it features lighting design by Fabian Garcia, set design by Dawn Drake Toney and costume design by Jeffrey Meek. The cast includes Gavin Guthrie (George), Greg Gore (Man in the Yellow Hat), Jenna Mazzoccoli (Netti), Bailey Maxwell (Doorman), Justin Larman (Chef Pisghetti) and Elvie Ellis (Phinneas). Lyric patrons may recognize Larman from his appearance earlier this year in Junie B. Jones-The Musical and in the 2017 productions of Rock of Ages, James and the Giant Peach and Assassins. Maxwell appeared in this past summer’s production of Hello, Dolly! The remaining four actors are making their Lyric Theatre debuts with this production. Single tickets to Curious George: The Gold-
en Meatball start at just $20. The production is perfect for field trips or a surprise for the entire family. For group reservations and discounts, email Groups@LyricTheatreOKC. org. For more information, visit LyricTheatreOKC.org or call Lyric’s box office at (405) 524-9312. About Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma Founded in 1963, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma is the state’s leading professional theatre company. Five ways
to have fun this weekend
Shawnee News-Star
news-star.com
1. Celebrate the holiday season this weekend by having a movie night, either at home or
at the theater. At home, there will be plenty of holiday movies playing on TV, and you can’t go wrong with any of the classics. Most of the big movies opening at the theaters this week aren’t really Christmas-related, but they’ll be a good diversion for anyone looking to get out of the house. The much anticipated superhero film “Aquaman,” is rated PG-13 and stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry who learns that he is the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, and must step forward to lead his people and be a hero to the world; the latest in the “Transformers” series, the prequel “Bumblebee” set in 1987, finds the battle-scarred and broken Autobot on the run and hiding in a junkyard before teaming up with a teenage girl (Hailee Steinfeld) to fight the Decepticons; “Mary Poppins Returns” rated PG, decades after her original visit, the magical nanny (Emily Blunt) returns to help the Banks siblings (Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer) through a difficult time in their lives; “Second Act” rated PG-13, stars Jennifer Lopez as a big box store worker who reinvents her life and her life-story and shows Madison Avenue what street smarts can do.
2.
It’s the perfect weekend to see a holiday concert. Community groups, orchestras and the like should be in full swing this weekend, so check the paper for listings.
3.
Saturday is National Cookie Exchange Day and it’s really easy to host your own either at home or work. First, create a guest list and set the date, time and location. Next determine how many dozens of cookies guest should bring, whether they should be homemade or not. Also, make sure guests respond to the invite with the name of the recipe or type of cookie they’re bringing to weed out duplicates. Either provide or ask guests to bring packaging and wrapping materials. On the day of the party, set up a sampling table, swapping table and to-go/ packaging table. Lastly, set the ambience with some holiday music and festive tablecloths.
4.
It’s not too late to add a personal touch to Christmas and make your own cards. There are plenty of ideas online, and you can use a basic computer program to make one. This is a great craft idea for kids and will keep them busy for a while.
5. And it’s still not too late to go shopping.
Monday, is Last-Minute Shopper’s Day after all! Last-minute deals abound, so check the paper for ads. And make sure you don’t forget the stocking stuffers!
