Sine Nomine, Shawnee High School Choirs to Present Joint Christmas Concert on December 10th

"For Unto Us....the Music of Christmas" will be presented by the Sine Nomine Choral Society of Central Oklahoma, Shawnee's community choir, and the Shawnee High School choirs in a joint concert on Monday, Dec. 10, at 7:30 p.m. at the SHS Performing Arts Center. "We're pretty excited about this first-ever collaboration with another choir for one of our concerts," said Herb Moring, Sine Nomine director. "Each choir will sing six or seven Christmas numbers, and then both choirs will join together to present three choruses from Handel's "Messiah." The three are "For Unto Us a Child Is Born," "And the Glory of the Lord," and the "Hallelujah" chorus. "The SHS choirs have about 127 singers, and Sine Nomine has 37, so 164 musicians singing choruses from "Messiah" is going to be a glorious experience," he added. Justin Lee is director of the SHS choral music program. However, due to surgery scheduled Dec. 3, his wife Melissa, vocal music director at Shawnee Middle School, will direct the high school choirs. Moring, a long-time music educator and church musician in the Shawnee area, now retired, is in his fifth year as director of Sine Nomine. The group is accompanied by Dr. Carol Ann Bell, retired professor of piano in the music department at OBU. Admission to the concert is free, but donations will be accepted at the door.

iday-themed version of “Deadpool 2”, called “Once Upon a Deadpool” is coming to theaters, featuring a PG-13 version of the film released from December 12 through Christmas Eve in the U.S. The new version will feature added interstitial scenes where Ryan Reynolds' antihero appears with actor Fred Savage -- all of which were apparently filmed in one day for this release. Savage will appear in eight scenes in which Deadpool will read a bedtime story to the former child actor, a concept comically recycled from his youthful appearance in 1987's The Princess Bride. The re-release isn't a complete cash grab. Reynolds has said that $1 from every ticket is going to a Cancer charity. Thanksgiving is in the books, so you can start playing Christmas music now. Oh, who am I kidding - you’ve already been enjoying your holiday favorites, haven’t you? Some of you were inclined, like some retail stores, to start playing it the day after Halloween. Every year there seems to be a discussion about how soon to play Christmas music. It’s the same thing, too: Either you like it or you don’t. Some feel it should wait until the day after Thanksgiving. I’m more inclined to be in that group. But it makes many people happy. I’m OK with that, too. I have seasonal favorites I must play each year. “The Christmas Album” (Elvis Presley), “Merry Christmas” (Mariah Carey), “Breath Of Heaven” (Vince Gill), “Let It Be Christmas” (Alan Jackson), “Joy: A Holiday Collection” (Jewel), “Christmas Portrait” (Carpenters), “These Are Special Times”

(Celine Dion), “Wrapped In Red” (Kelly Clarkson), and any of the Amy Grant Christmas collections and Trans-Siberian Orchestra masterpieces are just a few of the over 300 Christmas albums in my music collection. It seems like every year a different song sort of emerges to become my new favorite. As a kid, it was the fun songs about Santa that I loved most. “A Very Special Christmas” albums changed things for me. Various singers contributed their favorites to make a collection to sell for charity purposes. U2's “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),” Bob Seger’s “Little Drummer Boy” and Eurythmics’ “Winter Wonderland” were awesome. It put a whole new feeling into the music and changed the landscape of what Christmas music could be. I once read that artists want to make the best Christmas album when they record one. It sounds silly, but it’s more than an ego thing. Christmas albums, if done right, will be played and celebrated for many years to come. That also can translate into big bucks in royalties and sales. Perhaps one of the best examples is Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” from her 1994 holiday collection, “Merry Christmas”

“All I Want For Christmas Is You” was an instant hit that year. It’s fun, upbeat, infectious, and maybe even contagious. You couldn’t help but get engrossed in the song and get it stuck in your head. She was brilliant for penning such a timeless treasure. Until then, it was difficult for an artist of the times to bring forth a new classic and have it be accepted on such a grand level. Carey’s song got even bigger as the years went on. In fact, the song’s success is still prevalent, as it sits comfortably atop the Billboard top holiday songs chart, again. That’s a remarkable feat, considering how many Christmas songs have been released through the years. The song topped the charts in several countries and has earned global sales in excess of 16 million copies. It’s also Mariah’s biggest international hit and is the 11th best-selling single of all time. Several other artists have put their spin on the Carey original, a nice compliment to her, but it also adds to the song’s already $65 million in royalties earned. David T. Shake out 2018 and race to 2019 in the Opening Night Finale 5K! 3p.m., Monday, December 31st [OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - Dec. 4, 2018] – Say goodbye to 2018 and hello to 2019 by participating in Arts Council Oklahoma City’s 6th annual Opening Night Finale 5K. The festive run will begin at 3p.m. on Monday, December 31st at Colcord Drive in Bicentennial Park and lead into Oklahoma City’s biggest family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration. We return this year to our chip-timed USATF certified course where runners will make their way down Walker Avenue and the Riverfront trails in downtown Oklahoma City; it will begin and end again just south of Bicentennial Park. It is a flat and fast course that is perfect for runners of all abilities, even entire families. Before the race begins, there will be a special “warm up” appearance by the Thunder Girls, Thunder Drummers, Storm Chasers, and Rumble the Bison as they by provide entertainment and interact with the crowd. The fun doesn’t end when the race begins, there will be live arts and entertainment along the course to keep runners in the festive spirit. All runners will receive a branded Finale 5K finisher medal, a complimentary Opening Night wristband, and have the chance to win original works of art. The top male and female finishers will receive an original Dean Imel windscape sculpture, and the top three finishers in each category will receive custom Collin Rosebrook clay medallions. Participants are also encouraged to dress festive—neon, glitter, capes, costumes, whatever sets them apart—for a chance to win the prize for “Most Festively Dressed.” With an Opening Night wristband, the celebration continues after the race with entertainment for the entire family. Live acts will captivate audiences across 9 stages including music by The Allie Lauren Project, Edgar Cruz, Orquesta D’Calle and Take Cover. The Civic Center’s Hall of Mirrors hosts the Children’s Area with face painting by the Bricktown Clowns, various interactive art projects, a photo booth, and upbeat tunes by Moetowne Alex & The Nightview Band. Attendees can

also enjoy interactive comedy by OKC Improv, a Joe Coover Magic show, and a Broadway Review by Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma. The night will end with Opening Night's signature midnight ball raising and fireworks extravaganza.

Friday is the 77th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack. The Japanese strike took place on Dec. 7, 1941, and 2,402 Americans were killed. Libraries, museums, historical societies and veterans groups might be commemorating the event, so check the paper for listings.

Did you know that the first commercial Christmas card dates back to 1843? It was created in England by Sir Henry Cole, a civil servant who commissioned artist John Callcott Horsley to make the artwork on the card. In 2001, one of Cole’s first Christmas cards (sent to his grandmother in 1843) sold at auction for £22,500.

The OKC Zoo will be hosting day camps for the winter school breaks on Thursday, Dec. 20; Friday, Dec. 21; Thursday, Dec. 27; and Friday, Dec. 28. Snacks are provided, but campers must bring their lunch. Advanced registration and payment required. All campers are required to bring a copy of their immunizations. Camps run 8:30–5:15 p.m. Drop-off is at the OKC Zoo’s Rosser Conservation Education Center from 8:20 – 8:30 a.m. Cost per child, per day is $40 for members and $45 for non-members. This year, guests can choose between four iconic species from the Zoo’s newly opened Sanctuary Asia habitat: Indian rhino, Asian elephant, red panda or Komodo dragon. With each $45 donation, recipients get an adoption certificate, animal fact sheet, name recognition on ZOOfriends’ website and a plush that you can hold, snuggle and pass on to future generations. Net proceeds from each animal adoption benefit The Oklahoma Zoological Society, which helps spread the love to all the OKC Zoo’s animals by providing important funding for their daily care needs and animal enrichment items. The Zoo’s education team hosts monthly toddler programs that are entertaining, engaging and educational fun for you and your little ones! Toddlers delight in learning about animals through crafts, activities, discovery stations and more. Pre-registration and pre-payment is required. We need your help! One of our animal ambassadors ransacked one of our classrooms looking for their favorite snacks. Join the Oklahoma City Zoo and use your investigative skills to learn about animals, meet the suspects, and collect evidence to figure out which ambassador caused all the mischief. Girl Scouts can solve the case starting Saturday, December 15 at 7pm. This overnight adventure will help satisfy requirements for “Detective” Badge for Juniors and “Special Agent” Badge for Cadettes, but all levels are welcome. Cost: $35/Scout, $20/ Adult. With the Oklahoma City Zoo’s Daily Keeper Connections, get to know our animal family and the people dedicated to caring for them. This free program will allow you to meet our caretakers and learn more about your favorite animals. The Zoo’s caretakers are everyday conservationists, dedicated to protecting and preserving our planet’s wildlife and wild places.
