Shawnee Lady Wolves 2016 FALL SPORTS GUIDE

2C • Friday, August 27, 2016

news-star.com Shawnee News-Star

That’s not to say the girls don’t have some experience to back them up.

This Shawnee team is the definition of a rebuilding season. Their senior wall is empty and they maintained only two girls from last year’s squad. Experience is not something the Lady Wolves have a lot of this time around.

Kristin Haddox is one of the few girls returning from the 2015-16 season but is a big boost in the batting lineup with impressive fielding to help on the defensive side. She led in homers last season and will continue to provide an offensive spark. Jaynna Strong is also back and is a big help at shortstop as well as giving Perez some time off in the circle.

Freshman Nariah Perez will continue to get the majority of starts in the circle, but the inexperience can be felt throughout the lineup. Starting seven freshmen, the girls have a a long way to go before they are going to be able to contend with some of the better teams in Class 5A.

This Lady Wolves squad isn’t expecting to see a lot of success this season, but are worth watching for future successes.

“I think every game is going to be about gaining experience,” coach David Rolette said.

Tecumseh Lady Savages After a runner-up finish at last year's State Tournament the Lady Savages have got one goal in mind – returning to the big dance and taking the 4A crown. Graduating four seniors after last season, the Lady Savages have a strong core with pitchers Erin Harris, Caitlyn Bingham and Sierra Humphrey at the helm. Add on a strong group of attackers like Franki Hull, Carly Scallorn and Suni Meely, amongst others, and a deep playoff run is almost a forgone conclusion. “We've got 8 returners from last year's team. Our goal is just to try to get better and see how far we can go,” coach Chad Trahan said. No. Name

After suffering a 6-3 upset from No. 11 Bowlegs last fall in their Regional Tournament, the Lady Indians returned with a fire this season. Mainlined by the pitching prowess of Tarin Dubler and joined by a team of powerhouse hitters, anything short of a run at State will be a dissapointment.

Dale Lady Pirates Skyler Thompson

The always high-ranked Dale Lady Pirates will start the 2016 season having lost five starters from last year's team after finishing the season as the runner-up at State. The Lady Pirates lost seniors Madilyne Brownlie, Raegan Holt, sisters Shelby and Lacy Savage, Ryanne Griggs and pitcher Taylor Powell. They retained three solid 2016-17 seniors in Dani Manning, Lauren Hood and Lacy Hood. All three girls have been starters since their freshman year and were on the teams that won back-to-back Class 2A State titles in 2013 and 2014.

McLoud Lady Redskins

With a young team showing promise, McLoud is ready to put last season's 4-23 record behind them and show the improvements they have

made. Helmed by first-year coach J.D. Widner and team leader and “go-getter” Kaitlyn Hoover, the squad has improved talent in some of their

newcomers this season. Jesse Wooten is expected to provide sparks at the bat while Shyann Shipman will join returning starter Gabby Sears in the circle. The introduction of MaKyna Higdon to the catcher's spot will allow Hoover to take off the pads and be utilized in the ever-important shortstop position. Add in the hardworking pair of Karlee Norwood and Karlee Higdon and seniors Amber Kribbs and Destiny Burge. The school could see success that they haven't found in recent years; if not this season, then in ones to come.

Katelyn Hoover

“We are young but are working hard and our 'upside' is very high. We are getting better every day,” Widner said.

Prauge girls look for State return Finishing last season as runners-up at the girls State Cross-Country meet, Prague is eager to get back and hope to improve to the top spot. “The girls are real excited about a possiblity of being a team contender again this year,” coach Terry Martin said. With no senior girls on last year’s squad, the Red Devils maintain the entirety of their 2015 team, putting them in a good spot if they can stay healthy throughout the season. Among

the returning crew is fourth place finisher Miranda Opela for her senior year. Many of the girls and boys competing in cross country this year were also part of a strong track team in the spring that came home with 16 medals. Dietrich Smith and Zach Hickerson were on the boys two

mile relay team that brought home the gold. Both boys qualified for State Cross Country last year in the individual competition and hope to make a return.

Shawnee squad gets back in the saddle after finishing 39th at the State meet last year. “Kasey Rice is someone with next level talent and I expect her to compete and probably win almost every meet we go to, which will help put our girls team at the top of the standings,” Partridge said. Also returning after running in State last year are Jensen Miller, Mackenzie McDaniel and Emily Palinkas. The boys side is on the younger side after finishing 11th as a team last year. Junior Brice Koons again leads the team, finishing in the top ten at their Piedmont opener. Senior Colby Chamblin and junior Buddy Cahill also make their returns. Photo courtesy of Shawnee High School

After making team cross country appearances on the girls and boys side last season, the Wolves cross country team got back at it in their first meet at Piedmont August 20, and showed that they will have some of the top talent in Class 5A cross country for 2016.

“I was really pleased with how the team did. A lot of them ran personal bests or close to them and for the first meet that is a good sign,” coach Aaron Partridge said. On the girls side, junior Kasey Rice took the top time at Piedmont to kick off this season

Partridge has the utmost of confidence in his team this season. “We have a chance to be really good in both boys and girls this year. We have a very tough schedule that will get our kids prepared for the kind of competition they will see at Regionals and State,” he said.
