Wolves’ talent seeks rebound from 2015 Billy Brown, Sports Editor billy.brown@news-star.com @BBrown_NewsStar
This season could be a rough one for Shawnee. They lost their main two receivers to graduation in Jackson Winrow and Isaiah Strayhorn and have had to rebuild much of their back line. It won’t help matters any that they will have a schedule full of talent ahead of them from the start of the season Sept. 2, against Guthrie at home to a road stand against Noble on November 4. “It’s the toughest I’ve had since I’ve been here,” coach Billy Brown said. “Guthrie’s always good, Duncan’s top ten,
MAGENTA
Booker T’s number one in 6A-B league, and then you’ve got McAlester and Coweta back-toback. The first six or seven weeks are pretty brutal, but it is what it is and gives us an opportunity.” The Wolves are coming off a 3-6 season last year where they could never seem to find their footing. Small mistakes led to big losses throughout the season, never giving the team a chance to prove they were better than what the record books would show. The team has matured since then. And although they saw several senior departures, they return a good core and have new
Christian Patterson and Hunter Mackey
players eager to learn the ropes. The loss of Winrow, who was recruited to Vanderbilt and Strayhorn who moved on to Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas along with teammates Jalen Barkus and Ronald Cleaver, gives an opportunity for Hunter Mackey, Tyree York and Christian Patterson to take their place. All of whom saw significant time playing behind the two receivers last season. “Those guys are going to step up,” Brown said. Making his return to the football field, Timmy Young should also see ample time and have the speed and jumping ability to make an impact. “Those guys will be in that first four or five receiver core. There’s no 6-1 Jackson Winrow’s but they’re all pretty good so we’re going to have to just spread the ball out and they’ll have to cover all of them instead of just one of them,” Brown said. Getting the ball to the receivers will be senior quarterback Jack Diamond’s job again this season. Diamond, who spent the offseason improving his game and making recruiting trips, has bulked up since last season. “He’s put on some weight, he looks really good running the football,” Brown said. “He’s strong, his lower body is strong, obviously his arm’s gotten stronger

because he’s gotten bigger. He’s just smarter about what he does.” The team has worked hard and gotten a lot of work done to prepare for the season. They knew coming in that one problem they would have to counteract is how thin they were going to be, forcing some to play both sides of the ball, Brown said. With the strength of schedule at the start and heat still playing a significant factor, that could have a profound affect. “Late in the year it doesn’t seem to bother you as bad. But earlier in the year, when it’s hot, it’s going to be tough but it’s what we’ve got to do,” he said. Fortunately, Brown will have the leadership of Diamond and Creed Humphrey on the sidelines to keep the team motivated. Humphrey, the No. 3 center in the nation recently committed to the University of Oklahoma in 2017 after transferring his commitment from Texas A&M. At 6-4, 285 pounds, Humphrey
Coach Billy Brown will be one of the biggest specimens on the field night after night and utilized to handle nose guards week after week, keeping Diamond free in the backfield. Creed’s gonna be able to handle the nose guards and let everyone else do what they do,” Brown said. “We don’t have to worry about that and he raises our
level of play just because he’s so aggressive and finishes blocks. What we coach the other guys to do, they can look at him and see what to do.” The Wolves host Guthrie in their opener next Friday at 7 before heading to Duncan in their first of five road games Sept. 9.

Coming off a 2-8 season in 2015, Tecumseh is going to be feeling the damage of losing a hefty chunk of last year’s team to graduation. The Savages will be without quarterback Gus Hull, running Back Jordan Brown and a slew of others. “We’ve had some different spots all over the field to replace this year,” coach Jason Murray said. In Hull’s absense, Murray has a 3-way battle for quarterback to decide on a starter. Junior Brayden James returns after playing backup to Hull last season. Joining him are senior Elijah James and sophomore Caleb Kelsey. Outside of the pivotal quarterback position, the Savages are working with some experience on the receiving end to connect with. “The receiving core has been doing pretty well,” Murray said. “Dalton Rickey’s a senior, he played last year, so he’s got some experience. Jordan Barnes, another kid who got some experience last year and played. Taren Davis didn’t play last year, but he’s come on and he looks pretty good. We’ll see, we’ll see what happens.” Murray said that he and the coaching staff have been working on installing new offensive and defensive terminology and adjusting the team on how to impliment new strategies. “We’re throwing a whole lot at them at once and we still make a lot of mistakes and things like that, but we’ll go back and watch film and correct those, then we’ll figure out what we do best and that’s what we’ll focus on,” Murray said. Right now the team and coaches are just ready to get out on the field, put what they’ve practiced into action and see how they fair. “I’m excited. These guys have a good work ethic and I’m excited for what they’re going to be able to do this year,” he said. The Savages will start their season on the road against Bethel September 2, and will host Seminole for their first
home stand September 9. The first three weeks of play will end in an away game against McLoud, giving the team an opportunity to get ahead
before going into district play in Week 4 against Tulsa Central.

OBU prepares for second year of D-II football 2016 OBU Football Schedule
Oklahoma Baptist enters its second year against Division II opponents a little bit wiser, a lot more experienced and ready to improve. “I’d say that we definitely figured out what we need to do to be more competitive in the NCAA level,” said OBU Coach Chris Jensen. “We know we have to improve our depth up front. You play five starters, but you need to have at least nine guys you’re comfortable playing. Last year we were closer to seven. Same thing I true on the defensive line. “That’s the difference - we need to have more depth. At this level you have to have someone who can hit a home run just having the ball in his hand. Our quarterback play, the line and that home run threat make the difference in where were and where we need to be.” Despite those needs last year, OBU played more competitively than the 2-9 record indicated. OBU lost two overtime games and three others were two-score games. Quarterback play might be improved this year by younger players able to push returning starter Dez Stegall, who led the team last year in passing and rushing. “It’s shaping up,” Jensen said. “We only had two quarterbacks on campus in the spring. Both did an outstanding job in how they’ve progressed. Grant Gower has had a huge impact as a quarterback coach. We’ve got some young guys on campus, just by their athletic ability, that will be able to compete for the job and that’s good for the program.” A two-horse race has developed for the running back spot with Daw-
son Myers and Isaiah Mallory both returning. “We’ve got two guys with significant college experience in Dawson Myers and Isaiah Mallory,” Jensen said. “Both of those guys are showing a different gear in practice and they’ve separated themselves. They’re competing against themselves right now and we’re looking for some guys to step up and push them.” Adding some size at the tight end position this year also gives OBU a larger amount of options. “We got some guys in this freshman class we think we can play a lot more in-line tight end,” Jensen said. If you watched our offense at all the last two years, you know we didn’t have that. We brought a couple of freshmen who have the size to be a true in-line tight end. But we also have guys who played that hybrid fullback/tight end last year back and have become stronger and faster and more confident in themselves and we feel good about their progress.” The receiver corps will, for the first time, be without deep threat Derek Serowski. “It’s going to be strange for me as a coach to not have Derek Serowski out there. I’ve coached him for a long time in college and in high school,” Jensen said. “But I’m exciting about those guys. I’m excited about the potential we have. I don t think you look out there and say we have a home run threat but we have some great possession receivers who can make something happen after the catch. I’m really excited about the progress and the way they developed over the summer.
They’re ready. They’re hungry and ready to take the football field.” And not much happens without a good offensive line. OBU has some solid returners. “We’ve got some guys who will be fouryear starters,” Jensen said. “Brandon Garrett and Zach Clark have started for four year year starters and you add someone at center like J.T. Ketch. J.T. and Brian Cornell started last year so we have a lot of experience in those

“Houston Tyler has a year under his belt and Gage Wimer and Ed Morgan have three years of significant playing ex-
den Pitzer is the first one to come to mind,” Jensen said. “He has been with us since we started in 2012. We’re so thank-
Dillon Smith four guys. That’s critical. Usually how they go, your team goes. We’ve had some younger guys show some promise. Instead of having 6 or 7, we’ve got that 8 or 9.” Across the ball on the defensive line, OBU also has some starting experience. “We have three guys that have significant experience,” said Jensen.

perience. The big question is who is going to step up for that depth.” The linebacker corps has few questions and some really good answers. In the middle, “Bryn-
ful he came back for one more season. He should be a conference award winner. The other middle linebacker is up for grabs and the competition is fierce.” Outside, OBU has a
wealth of experience, but Jensen hinted some youngsters might challenge the veterans. “Levin Jennings and Tanner Robertson played that position and Jason Lee got some experience last year. And Dillon Burley has been with us since 2012,” Jensen said. “So we’ve got a lot of experience but we ask a lot of those guys and there are a lot of expectations. We have to find the ones that will do the job for us. That’s what the preseason is all about.” The defensive backs are loaded with speed and experience. Safeties D’Ante Meeking and Erik Derrow return with solid experience and talent. The corners saw some injuries last year but could be a team strength. “Devontrae Young was a national champion on the track team. He’s definitely one of the speedsters. Charles Taylor experienced injury and got a medical hardship and wasn’t able to play a whole lot. We’re excited to see him back on the field,” said Jensen. “Phillip Spess played there last year and made plays. So we’ve got three guys there that have playing experience but then we’ve also got young

Continued from 1D guys that have proven they have a chance to compete.” The kicking game saw Cooper Koons emerge as a strong punter and he has since left his quarterback duties behind – sort of. “Cooper has transitioned to punter and you can tell in practice,” Jensen said. “I feel good about that. And we can make teams guess with his quarterback experience.” While Trey Tully is back for a junior season, he’s going to have inter-

nal pressure from new teammates. “We’ve got some guys who have come in with the mindset that they want to win the starting job and that’s put the pressure on Trey. It’s good to have competition. I think you’ll see a lot of improvement just because of that.” The team has already shown improvement early in camp. How that translates to the win-loss column is a work in progress. “I think we’ll be much improved over last year,” said Jensen. “There’s no control over outcomes, but you can control how

you prepare. What I’ve seen so far in preseason, I think our players have taken it to another level in preparation. I think we’re doing it the right way and hopefully it will pay dividends.” The season starts Sept. 3 with a road trip to Searcy, Arkansas, to take on Harding. The Bison go into that game as the 10th-ranked team in the GAC preseason coaches’ poll.

Redskins to rely on underclassmen Adam Ewing adam.ewing@news-star.com
Coming off a 2-8 season, McLoud coach Rusty Hall has elevated expectations for his team this year. “Goal one, we want to beat our rival Harrah next Friday,” Hall said. “Goal two, is to make it to playoffs. Goal three, win a playoff game and goal four, advance as far as we can.” The Redskins return 16 starters from last year, eight on offense and eight on defense. “We return a really good core from last year,” Hall said. “We have the best senior leadership since I’ve been here. This is a great group of guys in

the classroom but are also really strong. We had a few state qualifiers in powerlifting. This is a really good senior class and that helps the younger guys.” This season, Hall will be utilizing underclassmen in key positions. “We have a couple sophomores that will get some playing time,” Hall said. “Our starting fullback is our backup quarterback and he’s just a sophomore. We have a couple receivers who are young. Even though we are heavy with senior starters we have plenty of twos who are sophomores and juniors.” Coach Hall said he has noticed the biggest improvement coming

from the offensive line’s overall strength. “We return four of our five lineman,” Hall said. “From a strength standpoint, we’re talking 100 pound gains in squats, 50 pound gains in bench over the summer.” During the scrimmage against Chandler, the Redskins’ excitement could be seen all over the field. “We wanted them to go out there, hit people and get excited,” Hall said. “The last few years we haven’t seen that excitement. It starts with our seniors; there’s a different attitude.” McLoud’s has the season opener today, as the Redskins host the Harrah Panthers. Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m.

Wildcats seeking constant improvement Jason Madonna is hopeful a 2015 season-concluding victory over Little Axe will have a carry-over effect for Bethel. Madonna, entering his fourth season at Bethel’s helm, is certainly familiar with baby steps. After his first two editions combined to go 0-20, Bethel upended McLoud in its 2015 debut. Nine games later, the Wildcats whipped Little Axe to end the year 2-8. “The McLoud win was definitely a relief,” Madonna said. “To finally get over that hump was good. It was nice that it was against McLoud because it is a regional rivalry. The previous two years they really beat up on us. “That last game against Little Axe was a nice way to send the seniors out, and there was also something to work for in the future.” Bethel launches the season tonight at Luther. The kickoff is set for 7. In Madonna’s first two seasons, Bethel
finished with less than 25 players. Even with a high graduation count — 12 seniors — the total player number was up to 40. “That’s a positive for us,” Madonna said. “It feels like the kids we have are committed.” Patience will also have to be a virtue for Madonna in 2016 as the Wildcats have just three returning starters, all of whom will operate on both sides of the ball.” Austin Acklin, a receiver as a junior, will take over the quarterback duties — his first time ever under center — in addition to playing cornerback. “We needed a quarterback, and he was best suited,” said Madonna. “He reads stuff pretty well; he sees the passing windows and he gets the ball out in time. That’s the most impressive thing about him. “He is definitely a better runner than passer but has enough throwing ability that defenders have to respect it.” Bethel will operate out of the pistol offense after primarily utilizing the I-formation last season.

Also going two ways are junior James Lindsay (wide receiver/safety) and Garrett Hopkins (center/defensive end). Hopkins was a tackle in 2015. “We think James will transition from a possession-type receiver to a receiver playmaker,” Madonna said. “He runs the 40 in about a mid4.6.” Madonna said Hopkins is Bethel’s best lineman, offensively and defensively. “He’s strong and aggressive, although he’s a little undersized. He has good balance and a good base, partially because he wrestles.” Also scheduled for double-duty roles are Peyton Barney and Andrew Barr, both going at running back and free safety. Others scheduled for double-duty action are Elijah McIntosh (offensive line/linebacker) and Matt Melter (linebacker/ fullback). Barr, who was switched to running back a week ago when Barney broke his thumb, will start Friday night when Bethel opens at

in addition to kicking off. Madonna said Acklin is the likely punter. Bethel almost posted a third victory in 2015, losing an overtime decision to Star Spencer. “We know where we’ve been and where we’re trying to go,” Ma-
donna said. “We know we have to prove people wrong. We feel like if we can be injury free and get a few breaks, our schedule is manageable. We’re going to have to grind out games to win.”

Snyder, success synonymous at Seminole Fred Fehr Contributing Writer
The earth didn’t actually shake last November when Seminole fell to visiting Plainview in a wild 42-41 playoff thriller. But those in the know — in Oklahoma’s high school football circles — had to experience a double take over the rarity. In the remarkable 36-year head coaching experience of Mike Snyder at Seminole, opening-round playoff losses have been more scarce than Donald Trump peace offerings. Consider the consistency. Snyder, who assumed the Chieftain head post in 1980 after an eightyear assistant stint, is gunning for his 32nd consecutive playoff berth. When the Chieftains entertain Wewoka in their Friday, Aug. 26 opener, the coaching staff will be working with likely the leanest — in terms of experience – squad of Snyder’s illustrious tenure. After possessing a 25-player senior class in 2015, Snyder will have just 10 upper classmen in 2016. Forty-one players, including 20 sophomores and 11 juniors, must grow up quickly if Seminole is to equal last year’s 9-3 success. When Seminole moved from District 3A-3 to 3A-4, it was assured of a quality rematch Oct. 28 at Plainview. In a 3A-4 coaches’ poll, the Chieftains were picked to finish third behind Sulphur and Plainview in the seven-team district. There are just four fulltime returning starters with seniors Max Guest and Nate Parks slated to go both ways. Of Guest, who racked up 750 receiving yards in 2015, Snyder said, ‘He makes a lot of things happen after catching the ball. He has above average speed and excellent hands. Max just has a knack of making people miss after the catch. That’s probably his best asset.” Guest will also be utilized on defense as a cornerback.
Parks, a tight end in 2015, has moved to center, a position he has never occupied, and will remain at defensive end. “Nathan has great quickness and good technique,”said Snyder. Also returning as starters are quarterback Logan Long, a senior, and junior inside linebacker Gavin Parks, Nate’s brother. Long threw for almost 1,300 yards in 2015. “Logan is a very intelligent kid with a good arm, and he’s very accurate,” Snyder said. “He has good leadership skills, which is a huge plus, and he works very hard in the summer. “Gavin moves to the ball really well and has a tendency to find the right block.” Good tackle play is essential in Snyder’s oneback scheme. Brothers Brandon Earles, a senior, and Chris Earles, a sophomore, have to be vital cogs. “They need to be good at run blocking,” Snyder said. “Those two places on the field are huge for us because of our blocking scheme.” Brandon Earles injured his knee in the 2015 opener and missed the rest of the campaign. Seminole has already suffered one 2016 injury casualty. Senior Trae Taylor tore up his knee at a summer camp and faces ACL surgery. “He’s a really good linebacker. It was the first time we ever lost a kid at camp,” Snyder said. Snyder needs quality effort from defensive tackle Preston Flynt, a part-time starter last season. “We expect some good things from him,” Snyder said. Snyder believes the 2016 squad will run better than the 2015 unit

but is smaller overall. “Size doesn’t matter to me. Good players are good players at the high school level,” Snyder said. “We have to find three secondary people, but we have some good athletes competing back there. We do not have much depth.” In his fourth decade of coaching at Seminole, Snyder confesses to one minor shortcoming. “I get tired real easy. The heat gets to me more, but I still love what I am doing.” Because of its early season opener, Seminole had just one scrimmage — Aug. 19 at Tulsa Metro Christian. “We played a lot of kids, and no one got hurt,” Snyder said. “We moved the ball a little bit but didn’t score. They scored twice. They are

Bulldogs prepare for change to Class 2A-2 Billy Brown, Sports Editor billy.brown@news-star.com @BBrown_NewsStar
Moving back to District 2 in Class 2A, Meeker coach Lonny Nolen thinks the team is back where they probably belong. Finishing last season with a second round playoff loss to Lone Grove, the Bulldogs made a strong push in their final season of Class 3A. But with the losses of quarterback Michael Nolen, star running back Jake Standlee and standout receiver Levi Bagwell along with others throughout the team, there perhaps isn’t a better time for a reboot. “All those places we’re filling in right now and I’ve been pleasently surprised,” coach Nolen said. During the Bulldogs’ first scrimmage last week against Jones and Cushing, Nolen saw some of his receivers step up to the challenge that weren’t given a lot of play time before then. The boys were smart and Nolen said that they made “great catches in critical situations.” The scrimmage gave Meeker their first look at how they could fair against touch competition, both Jones and Cushing are successful
3A talents and Jones was ranked No. 1 in their class in a preseason AP prep poll. All things considered, Nolen said his boys felt pretty good about how they performed against the two other schools. “The starting 11, we matched up pretty well with them,” he said. The scrimmage also gave the team a chance to see Michael Nolen’s replacement in action. Running the team this season and quite possibly the next several years will be freshman Jacob Martin. At 5-foot-8 and 150 pounds, Martin’s size might not seem like he is that impressive of a specimen on the surface, particularly after taking the place of the 170-pound Nolen. But what he lacks in size, he makes up for in athleticism, coach Nolen said. “He’s real athletic, does things well, throws
a good ball. But he is just a freshman. The upperclassmen around him will have to be the ones around him who keep everything going at first.” Fortunately there won’t be a huge shortage of older classmates with varsity experience to help Martin on his way. Talents such as Elijah Bloomer and Brett Roach at running back and offensive lineman Adrian Wolford are just a few returning that will be there to help in the transition period. Coach Nolen feels like the crew he has returning on both sides of the ball will be an advantage. “We’ve got about five returners on each side of the ball coming back. But probably more importantly, we’re as deep on the offensive line and defensive line as we’ve ever been,” he said. “Going into Class 2A ball we feel like that’s going to

be a plus for us.” With the offense still in a bit of a transition phase, Nolen has the utmost of confidence in his defense to make the stops. “Defense is really further along than offense is at this point, which is probably a good thing,” he said. “I think most teams feel like early in
the year they’d like their defenses to be further along.” All in all, Nolen feels good about where the team is, how they have progressed in the short time they’ve been together, and is eager to face the challenges ahead. “We’re looking forward to a good year. We
have high expectations,” he said. Head Coach: Lonny Nolen Assistant Coach: Curtis Scruggs Assistant Coach: Isaac Treadaway Assistant Coach: Wally Newport

Red Devils have been revitalized Fred Fehr Contributing Writer
Red Devil Revitalization. That’s been a two-year theme at Prague under head coach Shannon Watford. When Watford assumed the Lincoln County post entering the 2014 season, Prague was coming off an abysmal 1-19 two-year run. Participation alone was dismal with a 19-player roster. Dividends were quickly reaped as the 2014 Red Devils went 6-5, including narrow losses to Stroud (21-18) and Chandler (42-41 in overtime). The renaissance escalated last year. After a 6-4 regular season record, Prague became the Class 2A playoff darling. Watford’s squad won their first three matchups — road decisions over Hartshorne (48-27) and Hobart (31-6) as well as a 22-7 home triumph against Washington. Prague’s run ended with a 20-13 semifinal setback to Haskell at Beggs. If Prague possesses another playoff sprint, it will have to overcome the loss of eight seniors. Gone via graduation is two-year starting quarterback Colin Watford, Shannon’s son and currently a freshman signal-caller for Southwestern State at Weatherford. Colin threw for approximately 4,000 Red Devil yards. Senior Matt Headley, Colin’s backup last year, will take over the QB duties. “We will run the ball a little more with Matt,” said Shannon Watford. “Matt is a big kid, a good power runner who we’ve used just about everywhere — receiving, running back, secondary.

He also punts, kicks off, does extra points. He really is versatile.” With Headley behind center, Prague will likely lean more on a ball-control offense instead of wide-open spread attack. The Red Devils return seven starters on the offensive side, including two-way performers Ray Embry (WR-DB), a junior, and senior Tristin Jorgensen (WR-DB). “Ray was an all-conference selection who has great speed and is a tall, physical kid,” Wat-
bert return on the offensive line. On the defensive side, Jorgensen and Embry will be joined by returning starters Jacob VanOster (nose guard), EJ Zenon (linebacker) and Ben Wyatt (defensive end). Two standouts who have been injury plagued the past few seasons — Austin Chesser and Josh Tanner — get starting linebacker nods. Sophomore Jake Schultz will start at free safety. “He’s the fastest

ford said. “Tristin, who led us in receiving, is a quick kid who runs good routes and has great hands. We try to get the ball to him in open spaces and we like to throw Ray the deep ball.” Both players are utilized as punt returners. Junior tailback Calvin Boyce, who led Prague in scoring in 2015, rushed for 2,000 yards. He has also coached at Star Spencer, Chickasha and Purcell. The Red Devils are jumping up to Class 3A after a two-year stint in 2A. In a 3A-2 coaches’ poll, Prague was voted third behind Jones, a state semifinalist last year, and always-tough Douglass. “I’ve coached every level, Class A to 6A,” Watford said. “It’s a different challenge every stop. We’ve been in a
tough district the last two years. We have changed cultures here. It had become a passive culture in a tough sport where people are knocking you down. “Kids are the same everywhere. They want to be held accountable.” Notes • Prague’s non-conference schedule is stiff, beginning wih Lincoln County foes Chandler (home) and Meeker (road). The Red Devils also play at Luther and entertain Cashion. • Watford’s staff consists of defensive coordinator Ray Headley, offensive coordinator Lloyd Leep, running back/secondary/special teams’ coach Travis Burdine and
defensive line coach Jimmy Goodnight. • Fifty-six players were on the roster when the football tab went to press.

NFL’S hottest man
Darrelle Revis sweats practice to make Sundays easier
By Dennis Waszak Jr. The Associated Press
arrelle Revis might be the hottest man in the NFL — literally. The New York Jets star cornerback routinely practices in a dark sweatshirt — one of at least three layers — and sweatpants, no matter the weather. Even when the heat index has temperatures soaring over 100 degrees, and the air is so thick you can hardly breathe. “I know, people think I’m crazy,” Revis said after a steamy practice recently. “Everybody does.” While sweat-drenched fans gathered in the metal bleachers are hoping for the occasional warm breeze to provide a respite from the blazing heat, there’s Revis on the practice field dressed as if it’s mid-November. “It’s just putting myself in the worst-case scenario, in terms of the heat, making it the worst possible,” he said. “If I’m able to overcome this, I think in a game, it would be fairly easy or at least a little bit easier for me.” The 5-foot-11, 198-pound Revis estimates he loses 6 or 7 pounds in water
D
weight through a typical practice. He’ll start the morning by chugging bottles of water and then again right before practice starts. Coach Todd Bowles prefers to have his players work during the hottest part of the day, calling it “the dog days of training camp.” Revis takes advantage of the extreme heat to quickly get himself in regular-season shape. “During practice, you feel it, but when you’re done, that’s when you really pay attention to your shirt just being drenched,” he said. “I mean, it’s completely soaked. It’s like you jumped in the hot tub or a swimming pool or something and you’re like, ‘Holy cow.’
“Obviously, the results I think are good because by the end of practice you’re like, ‘OK, I did something today’ because you’re so drenched.”
Who’s to argue with a seven-time Pro Bowl pick and five-time first-team All-Pro selection who has been considered one of the greatest to play his position? Well, other than some teammates who are downright dumbfounded by all the layers. Some players, such as fellow cornerbacks Dexter McDougle and Dee Milliner, might wear long sleeves or long pants, but none have both like Revis. “Ryan Clady said something to me yesterday like, ‘You’re a savage for wearing all that stuff,’” Revis said, laughing.
In this 2015 photo, New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis stretches during practice. He knows people think he is crazy for practicing in sweatshirts and sweatpants, even when the temps are over 100. AP
Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins looks for a receiver during the last day of training camp Aug. 15.
SLOW & STEADY Redskins’ Cousins has ‘boring’ goals for team
“The coaches even look at me crazy. Everyone’s like: ‘You have too much gear on! What are you doing? You look old, man!’” Revis said Jets head athletic trainer John Mellody constantly monitors players’ weights, so he’s not afraid he’s losing too many pounds too quickly. Staying hydrated is the key to avoiding cramps — or worse. Despite sweating his way through practices his entire NFL career, Revis has never needed to leave the field to get intravenous fluids. “Trust me, it’s definitely hot,” he said. “But, at the same time, if I can concentrate under those kinds of circumstances, I would think it would be fairly easy come Sundays.”
“Trust me, it’s definitely hot. But, at the same time, if I can concentrate under those kinds of circumstances, I would think it would be fairly easy come Sundays.”
Revis has always been regarded by teammates and coaches as perhaps the most competitive player they’ve ever seen in a practice, let alone a game. He strives for perfection on the field and can’t stand getting beat. Preparation is the key, Revis insists, to achieving what he has on the field. As a high school football star growing up in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, Revis often worked out with Patriots cornerback Ty Law — and what the youngster saw left an impression. “Ty would want to run like 4 miles down the street and you would sit there and think he’s nuts because he would have a sweat jacket on, a long-sleeved shirt and sweatpants,” Revis said. “I would look at him, like: ‘Dude, aren’t you hot? You might pass out.’” Sure enough, once Revis came to New York as the 14th overall draft pick in 2007, he adopted a similar approach. “You want to talk about fashion on the football field, that’s kind of my fashion look out there,” he said, laughing. “It works out for me.”

n the first training camp he entered as the Washington Redskins’ starting quarterback, Kirk Cousins has not only enjoyed the absence of drama that marked previous preseasons, he’s hoping it becomes the team’s standard. “I’ve told my teammates that I’d like to be the San Antonio Spurs of the NFL, be super boring and maybe people at the end of the season just go: ‘Wow. They had a really good year and no one talked about it,’ ” Cousins said. The Spurs, one of the least flashy teams in the NBA, have won six championships since 1999.

The 27-yearold Cousins, declared the starter late in training camp last season, started all 16 regular-season games for the Redskins, throwing for 4,166 yards and 29 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. He also led the team to a 9-7 record and the NFC East championship before Washington was beaten by Green Bay in a wild card playoff game. Cousins played just two series in the
Redskins’ 23-17 loss to Atlanta in their preseason opener, and completed all five of his passes. The Redskins were otherwise slop“I’ve told my py, committing 14 penalties teammates for 123 yards that I’d like and struggling to be the San to get their Antonio Spurs running game of the NFL, be untracked, but super boring Cousins said he’s confident and maybe people at the the team will be able to move end of the season just go: the football. “Having a ‘Wow. They great defense, had a really having a great good year and running game, no one talked being able to about it.’ ” control the line of scrimmage ... Kirk Cousins the fundamental
principles of football that have always been there are very important,” he said. “Obviously there are ways around it. You can still throw the ball effectively, use quick game and other things, but you’re going to be more consistent as a football team if you can control the line of scrimmage and run the football effectively.” For the past four years, the Redskins featured Alfred Morris in their running game. When they opted not to re-sign him after last season, that left second-year back Matt Jones as the likely starter and lead ball carrier. REPLACING By Tim Booth The Associated Press
W
hen Marshawn Lynch posted that photo of his cleats hanging from a wire, the Seattle Seahawks’ task became about more than finding a replacement for the yards and touchdowns he provided over the course of six seasons. Along with Lynch’s retirement came the challenge of trying to replace what he meant to the Seahawks in terms of style and attitude. “We’re not going to be able to replace him. Point blank,” wide receiver Doug Baldwin said. “Not his personality, his attitude, his leadership in the locker room and on the field. We’re not going to be able to replace that.” Lynch was not an ordinary running back. He was attitude in green cleats. The Seattle swagger that led to two Super Bowl trips was amplified by the likes of Richard Sherman and Baldwin, but it was created by Lynch when he arrived via trade early in the 2010 season. Now the Seahawks go into a season for the first time during their rise to prominence without Lynch on the roster. It may seem a minuscule worry with all the other challenges the Seahawks face, but there is a lingering question about whether Seattle needs to replace the personality Lynch provided. “Who he was in the locker room, it’s people like him that gel the team together. He was glue. He didn’t speak out, he wasn’t the guy to get in front and do rah-rah speeches but the few times he did, everyone shut ... up and listened because it was Marshawn Lynch,” Baldwin
said. “... We don’t really have a guy like that who commands the respect and attention at that level. There are only a handful of guys in the league who do anyway. We have the leaders like Richard Sherman, like Russell Wilson that can still carry that weight across the team.” Lynch’s replacement is expected to be Thomas Rawls, based on his performance last season as Lynch’s backup. Rawls rushed for 830 yards and four touchdowns, and averaged 5.6 yards per carry last season, but suffered a serious ankle injury in December against Baltimore that required surgery and a lengthy rehab. Rawls was only activated from the physically unable to perform list in August and may not even see the field during the preseason. So while Rawls seems the likely replacement, there are questions surrounding his health, leaving the likes of Alex Collins, Christine Michael, Zac Brooks and others to spend the preseason trying to take advantage of the opportunity. They all seem to know what being a running back for Seattle entails. “I’d say definitely toughness. Our (running backs) coach (Sherman Smith) likes to look at it as we set the tone and the tempo for the team. Everyone feeds off the running backs,” Collins said. “We’ve got to run down the field and get the defense chasing. You know, we set the tone so I embrace that and our group embraces that. That’s just what we try to do every day.” Seattle got a taste of life without Lynch last season when he missed nine games due to hamstring and abdominal injuries. He
Seahawks have bodies at RB, but who can duplicate Lynch’s swagger?

rehabilitated away from the team for the latter of the two injuries, spending the final weeks of the regular season mostly absent from the team’s facility. During that period, the Seattle offense became even more about Wilson. That evolution will continue this season because no one can completely replace Lynch. “Our style is who we are. Marshawn just took that to a whole other level,” offensive line coach Tom Cable said. “What you hope is Thomas (Rawls) and Christine (Michael) and C.J. (Prosise) and Alex (Collins), all these kids can find their niche in it or their role in it or their style in it, if you will. But our style is what we have here, what coach has laid out, and finding the runner that can lift that up. That’s certainly what Marshawn did.”

still a work in progress, but Cousins likes the direction the team is heading. “I’m very pleased with Sean and what he’s doing with our offense,” he said. “It’s so key as an offense to find an identity, find out what you do well, have a bread and butter, something you can hang your hat on, and I think we are starting to get there. We’re starting to feel that with the players we have and Sean’s done a great job of just continuing to evolve the offense to our strengths and weaknesses.” The real test, he

hris Maragos can’t imagine an NFL without kickoffs. The Philadelphia special teams ace admits to sounding like a lobbyist when he said he never feels safer during a play that the league keeps altering in an effort to reduce high-speed collisions, backed by statistics that show most injuries occur on kickoffs. With competition committee member Stephen Jones of the Dallas Cowboys suggesting that safety is more important than players making a living covering kickoffs and punts, Maragos is quick

on the counterpoint. “Yeah, things are moving fast and you’re running down the field. But I never feel like my safety’s compromised, at all,” said Maragos, who is going into his seventh year as mostly a special teams player. “From what people look on the outside in, it looks like a chaotic play. But the guys who are really mastering it know what they’re doing. It’s pretty under control.” Five years after moving the kickoff to the 35yard line from the 30 to reduce the number of returns, the NFL is trying something else to encourage more touchbacks by putting the ball on the 25 instead of the

20 on a one-year trial. There is still plenty of dialogue, too. Senior vice president of officiating Dean Blandino held a conference call with special teams coaches during the offseason. Among other ideas being discussed are eliminating the running start for the coverage team and pulling players on the receiving team closer to the kickoff line so that they’re moving more in the same direction as the kicking team, making it more like blocking for a punt return. Blandino said he doesn’t think the kickoff will be eliminated. “It’s a big part of the game,” he said. “It’s an
exciting play.” But the league increasingly sees it as a dangerous play, particularly with so much attention on concussions. And that’s where Jones isn’t swayed by the idea that it might mean fewer opportunities for players who aren’t good enough to be stars on offense or defense. “At the end of the day the players’ health and safety is the No. 1 priority in this league,” said Jones, the executive vice president of personnel for the Cowboys. “If that comes at the expense of something else that’s not as high a priority, then we certainly have to accept that.” One of the most note-

worthy plays of 2015 was actually a punt return, when Dallas safety Jeff Heath blocked Ricardo Lockette when the Seattle coverage man was in full stride and didn’t see him. It was a legal play, but the resulting neck injury ended Lockette’s career. While Heath has twice as many tackles on defense as Maragos in half the number of years, he still fits the special teams profile: part-time defensive player, fulltime chaser of opposing kick returners. And he believes there will always be a need for that. “You’re covering a lot of ground and you’ve got to be fast,” said Heath, who is going

into his fourth season. “There’s a lot of skill that comes into it as well. Those type of guys tend to do well wherever they play. Defense, offense or special teams.” “You talk about speed down the field, athleticism to avoid blocks. You talk about a heart, a grit, a determination, an inner desire,” Maragos said. “To me, (the kickoff) embodies everything that an NFL football player should be. And really what the game is about.” AP Sports Writers Dave Campbell in Minneapolis and Stephen Hawkins in Dallas contributed to this report.
